- 0:00in class s it's not going to be in
- 0:03classes it well si review alright so
- 0:07first let me go over some general
- 0:09information as far as the the si some
- 0:12common questions that students normally
- 0:15ask with an essay exam one common
- 0:18question does writing count the answer
- 0:22to that is yes and no no I don't have a
- 0:27separate writing score where I'm going
- 0:30to deduct points for grammatical errors
- 0:35you know spelling errors those kind of
- 0:37things but yes writing does count in
- 0:41terms of your ability to write is your
- 0:44ability to communicate what's in here in
- 0:47the case of this exam to the screen okay
- 0:49and those students who are better at
- 0:53writing will be better able to
- 0:54communicate what they know and
- 0:56understand here - to the screen and
- 0:59those students who are not as good at
- 1:02writing will struggle even if they may
- 1:04understand it here they won't be able to
- 1:06communicate that that to me and
- 1:09ultimately I can only grade you based on
- 1:12what I read alright so in that sense
- 1:15yeah writing does count a whole lot
- 1:17alright it is an essay exam you are to
- 1:22answering complete sentences and
- 1:24paragraphs and to give it your best
- 1:26writing effort now this essay is
- 1:31basically a three paragraph essay okay I
- 1:35know in your English 101 courses that
- 1:38you take your drilled into that you know
- 1:41five paragraph essay format and there's
- 1:44a reason for that you're being taught
- 1:46the fundamentals of right okay but as
- 1:50you'll learn later on you know sometimes
- 1:52you need to relax those fundamentals or
- 1:54you know you need to adapt your writing
- 1:56style depending on the situation so in
- 1:59the case of this essay I'm explicitly
- 2:02telling you spare me your introductory
- 2:04paragraph spare me your conclusion
- 2:07paragraph I don't need it I won't read
- 2:09it
- 2:09and for those students who struggle you
- 2:12know literally the first sentence of
- 2:16your first paragraph should read you
- 2:18know the rational basis test is boom and
- 2:22then you go on explaining that the
- 2:24rational basis test so it should be a
- 2:26three paragraph essay the first
- 2:28paragraph you devote to explaining the
- 2:31rational basis test the second paragraph
- 2:35you devote to explaining the
- 2:37intermediate scrutiny test and the the
- 2:41third paragraph you devote to going over
- 2:45the strict scrutiny test okay and you
- 2:50know reading the question identify and
- 2:52explain the three different tests
- 2:54rational basis test intermediate
- 2:56scrutiny strict scrutiny that are used
- 2:58to determine whether a law illegally
- 3:01discriminates against a particular group
- 3:03then explain which test would be
- 3:05appropriately applied to each of the
- 3:07below policies policy one a law that
- 3:10requires public colleges to only accept
- 3:13applications with a GPA of 3.5 or higher
- 3:17policy to a law that prohibits pregnant
- 3:20women from smoking policy 3 a law that
- 3:24prohibits Asian Americans from owning a
- 3:26fire so directions alright so paragraph
- 3:311 you are to explain the rational basis
- 3:34test that's what you should do okay
- 3:37explain what it is and which types of
- 3:41laws it applies to all right now in your
- 3:46explanation of the rational basis test a
- 3:50you may want to provide an example
- 3:53actually I change that not you may want
- 3:56to you will provide an example of a law
- 4:01like a law that prevents people who are
- 4:04blind from driving where the rational
- 4:07basis test would be applied okay
- 4:10remember the rational basis test applies
- 4:12to forms a discrimination that are not
- 4:15based on sex or gender race or ethnicity
- 4:19okay and then you would pick one
- 4:23three laws that the rational basis test
- 4:28would apply to to determine whether that
- 4:30law is legal or not I'm not asking you
- 4:32to answer whether the law is legal or
- 4:34not I just want you to answer which of
- 4:37those laws the rational basis test would
- 4:41be applied to and I think at least I
- 4:43hope it is clear which one it would be
- 4:45applied to that's paragraph one
- 4:47paragraph two right you explain your
- 4:52intermediate scrutiny okay now of course
- 4:56you're going to explain what forms of
- 4:59discrimination intermediate scrutiny is
- 5:02apply to to determine whether the law is
- 5:04legal or not you're going to explain
- 5:07what the government is ultimately going
- 5:10to have to demonstrate in general terms
- 5:12in order to justify the legality of the
- 5:17discriminatory law and then of those
- 5:22three policies pick which of those three
- 5:26policies the intermediate scrutiny test
- 5:29would apply to and again as long as you
- 5:33know what the intermediate scrutiny test
- 5:35consists of and where it applies I think
- 5:37it should be pretty clear which of those
- 5:40policies the intermediate scrutiny test
- 5:43should be applied to then paragraph
- 5:46three the third paragraph you're going
- 5:49to explain strict scrutiny in your
- 5:52explanation of strict scrutiny you will
- 5:55explain which types of discriminatory
- 5:59laws the strict scrutiny test is applied
- 6:03to you'll explain what the strict
- 6:06scrutiny test consists of in other words
- 6:08what does the government need to
- 6:10demonstrate in order to pass the strict
- 6:14scrutiny test and justify the legality
- 6:17of their law okay again I'm not asking
- 6:19you to answer whether the law is legal
- 6:22or not that's not for you guys to answer
- 6:24I'm simply just trying to see if you
- 6:26know what these tests consists of and
- 6:28where they apply and then the last thing
- 6:30you're gonna do in paragraph 3 with
- 6:32strict scrutiny is identify which of
- 6:35those three
- 6:36cause this strict scrutiny test would
- 6:39apply to and again it should be fairly
- 6:42obvious
- 6:43assuming that you understand the strict
- 6:48scrutiny test so that's it okay and
- 6:54again just as many times as you may need
- 6:57you may want to replay my my directions
- 6:59that's all I'm asking you to do again
- 7:02generally with each of the different
- 7:04tests one at a time one paragraph at a
- 7:07time
- 7:07explain what what each test consists of
- 7:11explain what type of discriminatory law
- 7:15each test applies to and then of the
- 7:19three laws that I provided the example
- 7:22laws right clearly specify which of
- 7:25those three that test would apply to
- 7:28okay and you just do that one at a time
- 7:31all right again any questions you guys
- 7:35have I'll be happy to answer to the best
- 7:39of my ability I wish you guys all the
- 7:43best and I hope all of you do do well on
- 7:46the exam all right
