Everything You Need to Know About Sound Design in 2025! (Complete Guide) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00look all editors understand that there
- 0:02are five aspects which make an amazing
- 0:03video you've got pacing creating
- 0:05interesting intros animations and
- 0:07engagement music selection but there's
- 0:09also this sound design and we all know
- 0:12that if we wanted to make an amazing
- 0:14video we need to be the best in all of
- 0:15these now what I don't understand is why
- 0:17is it that we pay so much attention to
- 0:19the first four and then give the least
- 0:21amount of importance to this last one
- 0:23sound design is one of the most crucial
- 0:25aspects of video editing and
- 0:27unfortunately I've seen way too many
- 0:28editors that are amazing at animating
- 0:31but just don't know how to bring their
- 0:32animations to life using sound design
- 0:34that's why in this video I'm going to
- 0:35walk you through everything you need to
- 0:37know about sound design in 2025 we're
- 0:39going to be collecting your own special
- 0:41sound effects back we'll be taking you
- 0:42through the three-step sound design
- 0:44workflow and at the end we'll even go
- 0:45through and sound design this entire
- 0:47short over here and here's a quick
- 0:49snippet of what you'll be able to do by
- 0:50the end of this video your most
- 0:52important asset as a video editor is
- 0:53your personal brand let me explain so if
- 0:56you guys are ready let's dive straight
- 0:57into mastering sound design in 2025
- 1:01before we collect our highquality sound
- 1:03effects Library first we need to
- 1:05understand what kind of sound effects
- 1:06we're going to need as video editors and
- 1:07you're going to learn this with
- 1:08experience but most of the common sound
- 1:10effects that you're going to be using
- 1:11are things like whooshes risers hits
- 1:16clicks gears and other sound effects and
- 1:19that's exactly why we need to create our
- 1:21own highquality sound effect Library so
- 1:23let's head over to your desktop and
- 1:24create a folder called sound effects
- 1:26we're going to be using this folder a
- 1:27lot in our three-step sound design work
- 1:29and inside this fold folder we're going
- 1:30to create a folder for each kind of
- 1:32sound effect we're going to need so a
- 1:33folder for whooshes one for risers and
- 1:35hits one for clicks one for Gears and
- 1:37one for others later on the video I'm
- 1:39going to teach you how you can use each
- 1:40of these sound effects in your videos
- 1:42but for now we're going to need to fill
- 1:43these up look we want to collect the
- 1:45best of the best sound effects out there
- 1:47and the easiest way to do this is to
- 1:48search up for a sound effect like
- 1:50whooshes for example and go through 100
- 1:52but only select 10 highquality sound
- 1:54effects the reason this works is because
- 1:56it forces us to choose only the highest
- 1:58quality sound effects which in return is
- 2:00going to make our sound design higher
- 2:02quality because the quality of your
- 2:03sound design is determined by the
- 2:04quality of your sound effects someone
- 2:07quote that now how do we find high
- 2:08quality sound effects you really have
- 2:10two directions you can go either free
- 2:11sources or paid sources the free sources
- 2:13are okay but they won't give you as many
- 2:15options or as high quality sound effects
- 2:17as you'd want these are sources like
- 2:18YouTube or YouTube Sound Library whereas
- 2:20the paid sources are going to give you
- 2:21access to way more sound effects and
- 2:23much higher quality ones and these are
- 2:25like epidemic sound or artlist.io I
- 2:27personally use epidemic sound so I'm
- 2:28going to leave an affiliate link down
- 2:29down below so you guys can get a free
- 2:317-Day trial but now that we understand
- 2:33sound effects a bit more let's go ahead
- 2:34and create our own highquality sound
- 2:36effects pack starting with the wooshes
- 2:38I'll head over to the epidemic sound
- 2:39search bar and search up for the term
- 2:41whoosh now once I've had a look around I
- 2:42can also look for other Niche down terms
- 2:45like electric whoosh base whoosh fast
- 2:47whoosh or whatever comes to mind but one
- 2:49thing you have to keep in mind is that
- 2:50you can only save 10 of these so choose
- 2:53the 10 best ones and make sure to
- 2:54include a variety of fast whooshes slow
- 2:56whooshes and different kinds of sound
- 2:58effects but with that done for our
- 2:59whooshes we can now move on to risers
- 3:01and I'll do the same thing once again
- 3:03search up risers and have a look around
- 3:04and once again only make sure I pick 10
- 3:06then I'm going to continue doing this to
- 3:08the hits gears clicks and other sound
- 3:10effects that we have and after doing
- 3:11that we should have a library of 50 or
- 3:1360 highquality sound effects and if you
- 3:15did this right you'll never need to
- 3:16update your sound effects library ever
- 3:18again but now that we have collected
- 3:19sound effects what do we do with that
- 3:21this is where we're going to dive into
- 3:22how we can use the pack that we just
- 3:24collected to sound design our video
- 3:26using our three-step sound design
- 3:28workflow
- 3:31let me start by saying that the
- 3:32three-step sound design workflow is a
- 3:34workflow I've used to sound design
- 3:35basically any video and it all starts
- 3:37with step one sound designing movement
- 3:39the first step is to always bring
- 3:41movements to life movements in a video
- 3:42without sound design are very dull and
- 3:45very useless so to bring them to life we
- 3:46use whoosh sound effects that mimic the
- 3:48air passing by which actually kind of
- 3:50correlate to a movement
- 3:52happening but what kind of movements are
- 3:54we talking about movements are basically
- 3:56anything that moves on in or out of the
- 3:58screen so things like popins from the
- 4:00top left right or bottom or pop outs
- 4:03from the top left right or bottom or
- 4:05even movements inside the frame like
- 4:07this one and even Zoomin and zoom outs
- 4:09all of these can be brought to life
- 4:10using whooshes just take a look at the
- 4:11difference between this animation
- 4:13without sound
- 4:14[Music]
- 4:16design and with sound
- 4:20design now how do we actually apply step
- 4:23one the apply step one we're first going
- 4:24to watch through the entire video and
- 4:26look for any movements that are
- 4:27happening on the screen just like this
- 4:28movement over here and and once we
- 4:30notice this we're going to go and find
- 4:31the right whoosh with the right length
- 4:33and right volume and drag it in but now
- 4:34we Face another problem how do we match
- 4:36our whoosh to the actual movement
- 4:38happening on screen it's a very simple
- 4:40solution we'll just take the peak of
- 4:41this sound effect and align it with the
- 4:43fastest point in the animation or the
- 4:44point with the most motion blur this
- 4:46aligns the highest point in the sound
- 4:47effect to the fastest point in the
- 4:49animation and it's going to be synced up
- 4:50and this would be the first thing I do
- 4:52to sound design a video just watch
- 4:53through the video look for any movements
- 4:55and bring in whooshes and align the
- 4:57Peaks to the peak of the movement this
- 4:58will give the video the Bas sound
- 4:59effects that set the tone for the
- 5:01movements which on top of these we're
- 5:02going to be building the rest of our
- 5:04sound assign and that is where we get
- 5:05into step two step two is taking care of
- 5:07the so-called textured sound effects now
- 5:09this in my opinion is the most important
- 5:11part of sound designing a video because
- 5:13although step one lays out the base this
- 5:15is what adds flavor to the video
- 5:16textured sound effects are sound effects
- 5:18like clicks UI sound gear electric
- 5:22sounds and so on the reason we call
- 5:24these textured sound effects is because
- 5:26they are what adds texture to the video
- 5:28how the heck are we going to know where
- 5:29to add texture to a video well in our
- 5:31library we have a collection of clicks
- 5:33gears and other sound effects and the
- 5:34first part of the process is identifying
- 5:36what needs to be sound design anything
- 5:38like text animations line animations
- 5:40icon animations basically anything that
- 5:43isn't sound designed with a whoosh is
- 5:44going to be our Target then based on the
- 5:46animation we can choose to either use a
- 5:48click or a gear sound effect or even mix
- 5:50up both for a brand new feel so check
- 5:52this out if we're watching through this
- 5:53section right here and you guys can see
- 5:55I've already sound designed the movement
- 5:56but there's an animation that doesn't
- 5:58have a sound effect this this letter
- 5:59popping effect is a good opportunity for
- 6:01us to include a nice textured sound
- 6:03effect so I'll sit here and think okay
- 6:05what kind of sound effect fits this
- 6:07animation and the first thing that came
- 6:08to mind was a mechanical sound effect to
- 6:10make it look like these letters were
- 6:11physical Keys rotating out so I'll bring
- 6:13in a gear sound effect from our gear
- 6:15folder and align it with the animation
- 6:16and this will make our title animation
- 6:18look like this your most important asset
- 6:20now you guys are going to learn a lot
- 6:22more about this process once we actually
- 6:23apply this to our edit but the whole
- 6:24premise is to look at an animation and
- 6:26give it a certain texture using sound
- 6:29effects like in this section here where
- 6:30we have this graph animation we can use
- 6:32it to bring in some electric and UI
- 6:34sound effects are mastering video
- 6:35editing and holding or in this section
- 6:37here where we have the selection
- 6:38animation we can use this to bring in
- 6:40some UI sound effects go over camera
- 6:42movement point is this is where you get
- 6:44to stylize your video using your sound
- 6:46effects and now that we've set up step
- 6:47one our whooshes for our movement
- 6:49animations and even set up step two our
- 6:51textured sound effects for our other
- 6:53animations what's next step three is
- 6:55where we introduce emotional sound
- 6:57effects if I wanted to sum this up I
- 6:59would describe as creating emotion in a
- 7:01video using sound effects because this
- 7:03is the stage where we use certain sound
- 7:04effects to build up our viewers
- 7:06anticipation or allow them emotional
- 7:08rest during a certain section of the
- 7:10video what do I mean by this there are
- 7:12parts of the video where a viewer needs
- 7:13to feel a certain kind of emotion
- 7:16perhaps we just revealed something big
- 7:17so we need him to feel like he
- 7:18discovered something new or perhaps
- 7:19we're building up to the climax so we
- 7:21need him to feel suspenseful point is
- 7:23these emotions are usually achieved by
- 7:25using certain sound design techniques
- 7:27and they are mainly made up of risers
- 7:30hits and sometimes other sound effects
- 7:33as well risers build up the viewers
- 7:35anticipation so we can use them when we
- 7:37want the viewer to kind of build up or
- 7:39feel suspenseful and hits shock the
- 7:41viewer so we can use them when we want
- 7:42to reveal something or come to a
- 7:43realization with the viewer and the
- 7:45reason this is the final stage is
- 7:46because this is the stage where you wrap
- 7:48up everything all together and with that
- 7:50being said that completes our three-step
- 7:51sound design workflow where in step one
- 7:53we bring movements to life using mushes
- 7:55and in step two we add textures to other
- 7:57animations to bring them to life and in
- 7:59step three we introduce the emotional
- 8:01aspect of the story by using risers and
- 8:03hits and if we are able to complete all
- 8:05three of these man our videos will sound
- 8:07insanely good and our viewers are going
- 8:09to love the content but with this being
- 8:11said we finally collected our
- 8:12highquality sound effects back and we've
- 8:14learned the three-step sound design
- 8:15workflow it's time to apply all this
- 8:17information to this short over here
- 8:19we're going to be watching through it
- 8:20and adding in our whooshes we'll even
- 8:22analyze each animation and add the right
- 8:24textured sound effects to each one and
- 8:25we're going to finalize this short to
- 8:27get this amazing sound design timeline
- 8:28over here and if if you're watching this
- 8:30as a video editor and you would love to
- 8:31edit videos like the ones you're
- 8:32watching right now I have a 60-day plan

- 9:01Isaac and my own editing style we can
- 9:03turn you into a Master Video Editor in
- 9:05the next 60 days just check out how far
- 9:08Jack has come in just 2 months from
- 9:10editing basic videos all the way to
- 9:11creating viral animations or check out
- 9:13how far anas has come in just a few
- 9:15months or even how far Nim has come in
- 9:17just 2 months look the point is we have
- 9:19a plan that's going to turn you into a
- 9:21highquality video editor in the next 60
- 9:24days and even land you your first client
- 9:26if you're interested in taking your
- 9:27editing to the next level and become a
- 9:29professional editor in 2025 so that you
- 9:31can start making money from video
- 9:33editing then just click the link down
- 9:35below I've left a free 6-minute video
- 9:36breaking down exactly how we can achieve
- 9:38this in the next 60 days for you using
- 9:41ultimate editors just give me 60 days
- 9:43and I can make you one of the best
- 9:44editors on the market click the link
- 9:46down below but in the case that this
- 9:47doesn't interest you then let's get back
- 9:49to sound
- 9:51assign but first we're going to need to
- 9:53find the right music track finding the
- 9:55right music track is all about the kind
- 9:57of feeling you want your short to give
- 9:58off if you you want it to be serious and
- 10:00sad then you look for tracks that place
- 10:01you in a state of sadness if you want it
- 10:03to be interesting and mysterious then
- 10:04you can look for tracks that make it
- 10:06sound interesting and mysterious and
- 10:08epidemic sound really helps with this
- 10:09because you can choose from one of these
- 10:10moods here to find songs that fit your
- 10:12video so I'll drag this soundtrack in
- 10:14and place it correctly and play through
- 10:16important asset as a video editor is
- 10:18your although this track is nice it's a
- 10:19bit more exciting than what we were
- 10:21looking for so let's go and remove it
- 10:22and I think I've got a better idea of
- 10:24what would fit here let's go over to the
- 10:25documentary section in epidemic sounds
- 10:27and these are music tracks that are used
- 10:28for docum dentaries so let's download
- 10:30this one right here and if we add this
- 10:32in you'll notice it fits really well
- 10:34into our video of three layers the front
- 10:36end the transition and the back end so
- 10:38let's just go with this one all right
- 10:39now that we finished our music selection
- 10:41let's get straight into sound design
- 10:42it's time to use our three-step workflow
- 10:44and we obviously need to start with step
- 10:45one which is sound designing the
- 10:47movements and as you guys remember the
- 10:48concept for step one is to just sound
- 10:50design all the movements that are
- 10:51happening on the screen so I'll first
- 10:53look through this section here as you
- 10:54can notice it starts off with a pretty
- 10:56quick zoom in early on so to allow the
- 10:57viewer to hear this movement I'll go up
- 10:59to my sound effects pack and drag in my
- 11:01wosh sound effect and it's pretty easy
- 11:02to see where the peak of my wosh
- 11:04currently is and as I play through this
- 11:05zoom in you can see the point at which
- 11:07it's the fastest so for that reason
- 11:09let's align the peak of the sound effect
- 11:10with the fastest point in the zoom in
- 11:12which is this point here now for this
- 11:14animation we have this three-part
- 11:15pyramid moving down from the top of the
- 11:17screen this is obviously a kind of
- 11:18movement so let's sound assign let's
- 11:20bring in another whoosh this one starts
- 11:21off harsh and then Fades out which is
- 11:23perfect for this specific movement then
- 11:25let's align the peak of this whoosh with
- 11:26the fastest point in this animation and
- 11:28duplicate it and align it with the
- 11:29second pyramid and duplicate it again
- 11:31and align it with the third pyramid and
- 11:33this is what it's going to sound like
- 11:34every business is made up of three
- 11:36layers now in this next section you can
- 11:37see we start off with a zoom in then
- 11:39move down and finish it off with a zoom
- 11:41out and all of these are movements so
- 11:43let's start with a whoosh in the
- 11:44beginning and align it with the zoom in
- 11:46and duplicate it again and align it with
- 11:47this movement and then duplicate it one
- 11:49more time and align it with the zoom out
- 11:51at the end now for this next one I
- 11:52decided to stylize it a bit more as you
- 11:54can see we have a popup of an image so
- 11:56let's add in a basic whoosh for the
- 11:58movement but this time I'm going to
- 11:59spice it up a bit more by going over to
- 12:01epidemic sound and searching for an
- 12:03electric whoosh then I'm going to lay it
- 12:04on top of the base whoosh to get this
- 12:06cool sound foil with the link that you
- 12:08leave in your bio okay great we're
- 12:10almost done with the movement so let's
- 12:11finish up this last section here we have
- 12:12a simple zoom in with a movement down
- 12:14and then a zoom out so you already know
- 12:16what to do drag in a whoosh for the
- 12:17first zoom in then duplicate it again
- 12:19for the second movement and then to
- 12:20spice things up I decided to bring in a
- 12:22Sci-Fi whoosh and place it here for the
- 12:24last zoom out and this I think sounds a
- 12:26lot nicer and lastly your back end is
- 12:28your ser
- 12:29editing high quality video and back in
- 12:31my pyramid animation I decided to layer
- 12:33on some Hypersonic water sound effects
- 12:35by aligning them with the whooshes which
- 12:37we placed earlier and this just sounded
- 12:38much better every business is made up of
- 12:40three layers and that's it for step one
- 12:42as you guys can see we were following
- 12:43the same exact sequence we Tre described
- 12:45for step one we just watch through the
- 12:47animation look for movements and add a
- 12:48whoosh according to the movement and
- 12:50this is the easiest step you can do to
- 12:51already take your videos to the next
- 12:53level but now it's time for the step
- 12:55that's going to completely revamp our
- 12:57short it's time for step two which is
- 12:59textured sound effects now remember all
- 13:01that we do here is watch through our
- 13:02video and look for every other thing
- 13:04that hasn't been sound designed yet so
- 13:05we're going to be sound designing text
- 13:07animations UI animations popups and
- 13:09everything else and for this we're going
- 13:11to be specifically using our gears
- 13:12clicks and other sound effects folders
- 13:14that we created all right let's get into
- 13:16the big timec consuming part of our
- 13:17sound design workflow starting over here
- 13:19the first thing that we have is this big
- 13:20text animation with a lot of letters
- 13:22flowing in this feels like a mechanical
- 13:23movement so we can add in a gear sound
- 13:25effect to make it sound like it's
- 13:27mechanically rotating in so I'll drag in
- 13:28one of my gear sound effects that I had
- 13:30and simply place the start of it as the
- 13:32first letter comes up your most
- 13:33important asset and this sounds very
- 13:35nice but I really want to make it more
- 13:36clicky so I layer on another clicky gear
- 13:39sound effect and this sounds much nicer
- 13:41your most important asset and the last
- 13:42part of this animation is the rectangle
- 13:44scaling out from the background and for
- 13:46this I'm going to drag in a Sci-Fi
- 13:47glitch sound effect and align it with
- 13:49the rectangle and this is what
- 13:50everything sounds like your most
- 13:51important asset and as you can see this
- 13:53completely changes the feel of the video
- 13:55so let's keep going through this the
- 13:56next animation we have is this dotted
- 13:58line with the text popup a general rule
- 14:00of thumb for dotted lines is to use
- 14:01clicky sound effects to bring them to
- 14:03life so I'll drag in this gear sound
- 14:04effect here I'll also make sure to
- 14:05extend it for when the line starts
- 14:07writing off so we have a gear sound
- 14:08effect for both the write on and the
- 14:09write off and for the last part of our
- 14:11intro we have a two-word write out with
- 14:13a line animation so for the line
- 14:15animation we're going to start with a
- 14:16Sci-Fi glitch sound effect for when it
- 14:17starts this will make it feel like a
- 14:19lightsaber starting up then we're going
- 14:20to add in a data sound effect so that it
- 14:22feels like this lead line is flickering
- 14:24and that's it for our intro check it out
- 14:25your most important asset as a video
- 14:27editor is your personal brand this makes
- 14:29a huge difference in our short and to be
- 14:31fair this was the most complex part of
- 14:33the entire edit so let's go ahead and
- 14:34apply step two for the rest of the short
- 14:36let's go over to the pyramid section
- 14:38over here we've got three dotted lines
- 14:39and three words to sound assign let's
- 14:41start with the dotted lines just as we
- 14:42did before We'll add in our click sound
- 14:44effects and align it with the first line
- 14:46then duplicate it for the second one and
- 14:48duplicate it again for the third one now
- 14:49for our text animations they write out
- 14:51like a typewriter but we're going for a
- 14:53futuristic feel of the video so we drag
- 14:54in this futuristic data sound effect and
- 14:56add it to our text write out make sure
- 14:58it starts as our text starts and ends as
- 15:00our text ends and duplicate for the
- 15:02second text and duplicate it again for
- 15:03the third text every business is made up
- 15:05of three layers the front end the
- 15:07transition and the back end great only a
- 15:09few more sections left moving into this
- 15:11one we have a zoom in and a dotted line
- 15:13so right off the bat let's go back to
- 15:15the clicky sound effects we made earlier
- 15:16in the video where we layered on a Gear
- 15:18sound effect with some clicks and just
- 15:20duplicate this one over here then we
- 15:22have this UI box opening up so we'll add
- 15:24in another sci-fi whoosh and as the UI
- 15:26Box is open we'll have a data sound
- 15:28effect in the background to make it look
- 15:29like we open a new Matrix or something
- 15:32then we zoom out and for that reason
- 15:33I'll add a constant power effect to my
- 15:35data sound effect this will make the
- 15:36sound effect fade out and I'll time this
- 15:38so that it fades out as we zoom out and
- 15:41this is just for the attention to DET
- 15:42then as we zoom out we have this field
- 15:44of profile pictures so we'll add a
- 15:45subtle data sound effect for that as
- 15:47well just to set in the ambience of the
- 15:49field your front end as a video editor
- 15:52is your personal brand it's what
- 15:53attracts your client eyes when they
- 15:54click on your profile all right two more
- 15:56sections left and we're finished this
- 15:58section was pretty simple first we have
- 15:59two words pop in and then this letter
- 16:01pop up sound effect so for the first two
- 16:03words I added two clicks and for the
- 16:05letter pop in I added in a gear sound
- 16:06effect then for the rectangle pop out I
- 16:08added in a Sci-Fi glitch and lastly this
- 16:10line animation is a lot like the blue
- 16:12one we had in the beginning so we'll go
- 16:14back to it and simply duplicate the same
- 16:16two sound effects which were the Sci-Fi
- 16:18glitch and the data sound effect then
- 16:19your transition is your portfolio all
- 16:21right final section for this last part
- 16:23we have our title revealing I wanted to
- 16:24add a mechanical feel to it so we added
- 16:26a rough gear sound effect to it and
- 16:28layer Ed it with a clicks sound effect
- 16:30for that attention to detail as for the
- 16:32line that pops down it doesn't have a
- 16:34dash so I won't make this one sound
- 16:35mechanical instead I'll use a Sci-Fi
- 16:37wosh for it then when the word service
- 16:39pops up I wanted to add a notification
- 16:41sound for it so I added in a UI click
- 16:43and after our zoom out we have two
- 16:45things happening we've got the icon
- 16:47popping and the line dashes coming out
- 16:49from behind the icon so we'll add a UI
- 16:51click to the icon in the middle and
- 16:53finish it off with a gear sound effect
- 16:54for the line behind the icon and with
- 16:56all this being said this completes our
- 16:58entire sound design for this short just
- 17:00look at how much step two did to our
- 17:01sound design timeline and this is how
- 17:03you know your video is about to be very
- 17:05high quality I might be wondering Joseph
- 17:07what happened to step three well in this
- 17:08case we wouldn't be needing step three
- 17:10because we just don't need to implement
- 17:11any risers which is one thing that I did
- 17:13forget to mention step three is actually
- 17:15not always necessary so ladies and
- 17:17gentlemen we've created our own special
- 17:19highquality sound effects pack we've
- 17:20learned the three-step sound design
- 17:22workflow to creating high quality sound
- 17:24design and we've applied these three
- 17:25steps to our short over here now it's
- 17:27finally time to enjoy it full with its
- 17:29sound design and everything so without
- 17:31further Ado here is the complete final
- 17:33product your most important asset as a
- 17:35video editor is your personal brand let
- 17:37me explain every business is made up of
- 17:39three layers the front end the
- 17:41transition and the back end your front
