Full transcript
- 0:00Are you tired of transv voice tutorials
- 0:02that require either a linguistics degree
- 0:04or a sound engineering degree to even
- 0:06understand it? Do you want a voice
- 0:08tutorial that could be comprehended by
- 0:10literal 5-year-olds? Here it is. Learn
- 0:13to change the voice from this to this.
- 0:16How to trans voice? All of it. Yes, all
- 0:19of it. This video's goal is to make the
- 0:21old tutorials completely obsolete. This
- 0:24is everything you need to know to do a
- 0:26girl voice. Provided you practice one
- 0:28step at a time. provided you practice
- 0:30one at a time. Every technique required
- 0:32to do a girl voice is like the walls of
- 0:34a castle. If you build the perfect front
- 0:36gate, but everything else is a wooden
- 0:38fence, yeah, people are going to say
- 0:40it's a bad castle. But once you give it
- 0:42the time to build each and every wall,
- 0:44then you got a complete castle. So, just
- 0:47remember that you won't instantly sound
- 0:49like an anime girl. I repeat, you will
- 0:51not instantly sound like an anime.
- 0:56Okay, puberty made our voice drop. Now
- 0:58what? Imagine it's really cold. We need
- 1:01to unfog our glasses or a car window. We
- 1:03need to make like a sound. This really
- 1:06breathy
- 1:07sound. [music] If we made it really long
- 1:09and then made it louder,
- 1:13right? H, it's very dark sounding,
- 1:16right? But if we make a H sound like a
- 1:20nice and small then we get a
- 1:26it's a bit brighter in comparison.
- 1:28Hear the difference between
- 1:31and and
- 1:33as you can hear this sounds smaller. It
- 1:36sounds brighter. When puberty happened
- 1:38our vocal folds got pretty dang thick,
- 1:40right? Imagine the larynx is this
- 1:42window. Okay. Now imagine the frame of
- 1:45the window is the vocal folds. Okay? We
- 1:48don't want our voice to touch the frame.
- 1:50We want to jump right through that
- 1:51window without clipping our legs on the
- 1:53side. Otherwise, this will happen. When
- 1:55the voice does a,
- 1:58it is now smaller and can fit through
- 2:00that window. Therefore, you don't have
- 2:02to touch the vocal folds that got thick.
- 2:04So, it's as if puberty never happened.
- 2:06Once you change your vocal size, this
- 2:07ball is going to go up a little bit. All
- 2:09you need to know is it's part of your
- 2:10larynx poking out of the throat. Right?
- 2:12Once it goes up a little bit, you know
- 2:14you've done it right. Okay, larynx
- 2:16raise. Mission accomplished. Don't raise
- 2:17it too much cuz otherwise you're going
- 2:19to
- 2:21If I were to demonstrate through using
- 2:22my mask voice and only changing the
- 2:24larynx as best I can, that will result
- 2:27in a
- 2:32nice day. Have a nice day. Now, when I
- 2:35do it in this voice, it sounds like
- 2:39a nice day. That's cuz all the other
- 2:40techniques are applied to [music] it.
- 2:42So, just focus on getting that kind of
- 2:44bad Spongebob impression kind of sound.
- 2:46If only there's a way to make my vocal
- 2:48size smaller.
- 2:50And now you can with these bonus size
- 2:52reducing tips. Try moving your tongue up
- 2:54slightly when using your voice. This
- 2:56will create even less space in the
- 2:58mouth, therefore reducing vocal size.
- 3:01Ever seen a trumpet player play a
- 3:02trumpet? They look like they had the
- 3:04most sour lemon ever. That's because
- 3:06that mouthpiece is kind of small. They
- 3:08got to put their face right in to even
- 3:10play this thing. When you make this ha
- 3:13sound, imagine smiles. Do a smiley face
- 3:16and really squish in the face a little
- 3:17bit. Ha. Ha. Procity is like the rhythm
- 3:22of the voice. Sometimes you might have
- 3:24your sentence go down at the end of a
- 3:26sentence. You want to avoid that. If I
- 3:28were to use my guy voice when I finish a
- 3:29sentence, it's going to go down. You
- 3:31don't want that because that's not as
- 3:33feminine as going up. So when you do a
- 3:35sentence, kind of picture the voice
- 3:37going up at the end of your sentence.
- 3:40Kind of like when people go, "Is that
- 3:42good?" That kind of thing. Try to
- 3:44replicate that, but slightly less
- 3:45exaggerated. A way you can cheese this
- 3:47if you're having trouble is going like,
- 3:49"Have a nice day. Have a nice day."
- 3:52Instead of have a nice day, right? And
- 3:54then slowly cut it down little by
- 3:57little. When I do my guy voice, you'll
- 3:58notice it's very monotone. But if I were
- 4:01to swap to a girl voice, it's going to
- 4:02jump up and down like a wave, right? You
- 4:05want to kind of replicate that
- 4:06>> in isolation. It would kind of sound
- 4:08like if the voice is going up and down
- 4:10in this kind of manner like this. Now
- 4:12for our next step, vocal weight. So you
- 4:15may think the voice right now sounds a
- 4:16little too much like Spongebob. Well,
- 4:18the solution to that, and you ain't
- 4:20going to believe this. No, seriously.
- 4:22Vocal weight is the act of making our
- 4:24voice thinner as opposed to thick. If
- 4:27you have trouble doing a bad Patrick
- 4:29Star impression, just try yawning and be
- 4:30like,
- 4:32and you'll probably get it. So, we have
- 4:35our voice really thick here. And then we
- 4:37make it really thin. Now, once you have
- 4:39it like this, all you have to do is the
- 4:41steps we've done earlier on top of this.
- 4:44Okay. So, that will be like going up
- 4:47here and that kind of thing, right?
- 4:49That's all this is.
- 4:50>> Is mayonnaise an instrument? Is
- 4:52mayonnaise an instrument?
- 4:54>> Is mayonnaise an instrument? If you want
- 4:56to go the other way, start really thick
- 4:58here and then like kind of go up and you
- 4:59end up with this kind of ah kind of bad
- 5:02sponge impression like earlier. And then
- 5:04you add that little bit of vocal weight
- 5:06to make it nice and thin. Okay. Yeah,
- 5:08you probably already know how to
- 5:10breathe, but do you know how to breathe
- 5:11to power up your voice? Not using your
- 5:14breath properly is the equivalent of
- 5:15putting fuel in a car, then chucking
- 5:17that fuel out the window and wondering
- 5:18why the car stopped.
- 5:20>> You never do this when pitch drives.
- 5:22When you breathe in, make sure your
- 5:24stomach inflates like a balloon. Make
- 5:26sure you do this really slowly. When
- 5:28doing this, make sure your stomach
- 5:29slowly goes back in.
- 5:33Have a nice day. You should feel it
- 5:35slowly going back in. If you make
- 5:37[music] the stomach go in too quickly,
- 5:40that is throwing fuel out of a car
- 5:42window.
- 5:42>> I'm going to crash out. Lucy,
- 5:44>> I said I was stuck. Now, the next
- 5:45technique you'll need is Oh, pitch.
- 5:48Sorry about that. Um, you're actually
- 5:49later in the
- 5:52I should see a doctor at this point, but
- 5:55this place still exists. All right,
- 5:57obviously going too high in pitch is not
- 5:59going to sound natural. I used to be
- 6:01respected, you know. Now look at me. A
- 6:04metaphor and a trans voice tutorial.
- 6:07Honestly, all you have to do for pitch
- 6:09is just kind of make like a d, you know,
- 6:12kind of sound, right? That's a good
- 6:14indication of how much higher you
- 6:16probably need to go. Feel free to just
- 6:18go
- 6:20D until you find the pitch that works
- 6:22for you. Honestly, that's all there is
- 6:24to pitch. Just make sure it's
- 6:26comfortable. Don't go too high. Don't go
- 6:28crazy. Now, let's do more residents.
- 6:30Give it up for residents, everyone. Woo!
- 6:33Yay! So, all you'll need for this
- 6:35science experiment is a straw, a water
- 6:37bottle, put the straw in the water
- 6:39bottle, fill the water bottle with
- 6:40water. Water, not monster. Okay? And
- 6:44from there, you're going to grab the
- 6:45straw with your mouth, and you're going
- 6:47to make like a
- 6:49sound into that straw. It's kind of like
- 6:52a W and a V sound mixed together. All
- 6:54right. Put the straw in the bottle and
- 6:56just do like a
- 6:59and see if there's lots of bubbles.
- 7:00Picture a bunch of sticks made by
- 7:02beavers to make a dam. Take away one
- 7:04stick. All the water's going to rush to
- 7:06that one little gap. You're going to do
- 7:08that with your voice to create a smaller
- 7:10vocal size. Allow the voice to travel to
- 7:12that straw.
- 7:16Water is good. You can kind of maintain
- 7:18that mouth posture as you exit from the
- 7:20straw as that's a bit more effective.
- 7:22Sorry about having IRL me next to me.
- 7:24It's a little hard to demonstrate this
- 7:25technique with a TV strapped to my face.
- 7:28You can also use this as an opportunity
- 7:29to practice your breath control by
- 7:31trying to hold that
- 7:33sound for as long as you can and even
- 7:34try little sirens by going up and down
- 7:36like
- 7:40that's good for a multitude of reasons.
- 7:41So feel free to give that a go too.
- 7:43Don't have a straw sitting around? Don't
- 7:45worry, I have an alternative technique
- 7:46you can do though only I really teach it
- 7:48like this. So keep that in mind. Your
- 7:50mileage may vary. I call this the hair
- 7:52method. Grab the HJ from the larynx
- 7:54exercise. Grab a little M sound and
- 7:56imagine you're meditating in a valley
- 8:02and imagine your voice traveling in
- 8:03front of you. Imagine your voice is
- 8:05literally a fire breath traveling in
- 8:08front of you. Maybe you're doing a
- 8:09Skyrim Dovakin shout. I don't know. Just
- 8:12imagine your voice traveling in front of
- 8:13you. That kind of
- 8:17the way I was explained resonance is
- 8:19basically imagining vibration from the
- 8:21lower part of your throat moving to your
- 8:23mouth. So like imagining the spawn point
- 8:25of your voice moving with sentences
- 8:30milkshake
- 8:31milkshake if I use my old voice
- 8:35[sighs and gasps]
- 8:38milkshake
- 8:40milkshake.
- 8:41So if that works you let me know. If it
- 8:44doesn't also let me know. Hi there.
- 8:46Welcome to Sesame Street. I'm really
- 8:48happy to see you. Today we're going to
- 8:50cover the soft palette. Rave your
- 8:52tongue. Try touching the roof of your
- 8:54mouth. You might notice it's quite hard
- 8:55and feel like bone. This is your hard
- 8:57palette. Take your tongue a little
- 8:59further back until it's softer. This is
- 9:02well the soft pallet. If you exaggerate
- 9:04your soft pallet's movement, you end up
- 9:06with this kind of uh by moving the back
- 9:09of your tongue a little upwards and
- 9:11imagining a trap door opening, letting
- 9:14more air to your nose. Ever heard Elmo's
- 9:16voice from Sesame Street?
- 9:18>> Cookie Zoe, turn Elmo doesn't even have
- 9:20a mouth. Elmo's voice is basically a
- 9:22highly exaggerated soft pallet sound.
- 9:25Elmo, from here, grab the voice and then
- 9:28remove the falsetto. So if you do that,
- 9:31then the voice sounds a bit like this.
- 9:33Then from there, kind of loosen it a
- 9:35little bit and make it a little less
- 9:37tight and then you've applied the soft
- 9:38palette to your voice. So you tried an
- 9:41Elmo voice and it didn't really work.
- 9:42Don't worry, there's another way. Grab
- 9:44the word sing, right? That kind of
- 9:46sound. Hold it. Sing.
- 9:49Feel how the tongue moves to create this
- 9:51sound. Your tongue is going to go up a
- 9:53little bit. That's the position. Then
- 9:55feel that bit of movement at the roof of
- 9:57your mouth behind your tongue. That's
- 9:59your soft pallet movement. From there,
- 10:00you can make a
- 10:08nice day.
- 10:11The nice day like that. You won't get
- 10:14this straight away. That's okay. I
- 10:16didn't get it straight away. Voice
- 10:18training was my biggest weakness of
- 10:19transition. It was one of the last
- 10:20things I even did, right? So, just keep
- 10:22in mind that if you start and you think
- 10:24you're bad, that's normal. That's just
- 10:27because you started. As you do it more
- 10:29and more, you will get better. You will
- 10:31become incredible. You'll be able to
- 10:33have a voice that feels like your own.
- 10:35Don't give up and don't let the opinions
- 10:37of others make you feel discouraged in
- 10:39your voice journey. Understand that you
- 10:41probably won't get the most honest
- 10:42feedback by posting on Reddit. It's
- 10:44people that are kind of nitpicky. Cis
- 10:46people are not this picky. Sis people
- 10:49don't even know voice training exists.
- 10:51If you can get even some of these
- 10:52techniques down, a sis person won't have
- 10:54any idea. If you take anything away from
- 10:56this video, know that it's okay to be
- 10:58bad at voice training. No one starts
- 11:00good at voice training. I didn't start
- 11:02good at voice training. The only way I
- 11:03feel it's right to end a video like this
- 11:06is a montage of my voice over the course
- 11:09of my [music] transition.
- 11:11When you listen to this, just think
- 11:13maybe how was I feeling in that moment?
- 11:16Was I thinking I would ever get this
- 11:17far? Did I think [music] I sucked? Yeah,
- 11:22I thought I sucked a lot early on. I
- 11:25thought I could never do this, but I
- 11:27kept going. And I hope that inspires you
- 11:30to keep going, too. Thank you for
- 11:33watching this video. Feel free to ask
- 11:35any questions in the comments. If you're
- 11:38interested in Patreon private lessons,
- 11:39feel free to click the link below to
- 11:41[music] see if there's any slots
- 11:42available. I'll do what I can to fill as
- 11:44many as I can. And thank you so much for
- 11:47this opportunity that has fundamentally
- 11:49changed my life. I cannot express how
- 11:52much that dang larynx video has changed
- 11:56my life.
- 11:59Mixups and all.
- 12:01Stay hydrated and know that you are
- 12:04valid. I'll see you next week.
- 12:08Um, I'm not used to talking in front of
- 12:10my phone randomly. Maybe you are in the
- 12:13future if I ever do the content creating
- 12:16thing. I probably won't. I don't know.
- 12:19Uh, feminine speech patterns in their
- 12:21subtitles regardless of the context of
- 12:23the actual person speaking in the movie.
- 12:25>> Today's date is uh 9:23
- 12:29a.m. and it's the 14th of April and it
- 12:32is in fact 2021. [music]
- 12:33how it will actually go when I start uni
- 12:36actually organizing uni to start.
- 12:38>> It's not about how miserable you are as
- 12:39a boy. It's about how much happier you
- 12:43think you'd be as a girl.
- 12:44>> I know it's a small step in the massive
- 12:47mountain that is trans voice. But don't
- 12:50give up, okay? Whatever your reasons for
- 12:52learning to do a girl voice, you can do
- 12:55it. There'll be moments where it'll be
- 12:57really frustrating, moments where we
- 12:59don't make that much progress. But I
- 13:02hope this video inspires you for the
- 13:04journey and also gives you some ideas of
- 13:07things to practice to get closer. I
- 13:09tried with all my heart to make the
- 13:11video that I wish I had. Um, this was
- 13:15intended to be if I could send one video
- 13:18to my past self [snorts] to learn voice
- 13:20quicker, this would be the video I would
- 13:23send past me. So hopefully this video
- 13:27helps you all just as much [music] as it
- 13:31would help a past me.
- 13:34So thank you for allowing this to be my
- 13:37job beyond words. Thank you and I hope
- 13:40this video was helpful. Stay hydrated
- 13:43and know that you are valid. See you
- 13:46[snorts] next week.
