Every Man Deserves a Space Like This — Transcript

- 0:00A man generally knows when his home
- 0:02doesn't fit him. He might not articulate
- 0:04it, but he feels it. A delicate
- 0:07disunityity, subtle but persistent. When
- 0:10a man's home doesn't meet his standards,
- 0:12it slowly taxes everything else he does.
- 0:15Remember that a room can respect the man
- 0:18who lives in it, it can also undermine
- 0:20him, compromising his values. Today, I'm
- 0:23going to help you understand and create
- 0:25a deserving room, one that matches you
- 0:28in discipline, taste, and trajectory. If
- 0:31you're a returning subscriber, hit the
- 0:32thumbs up. If you're new here, hopefully
- 0:35by the end of this video, you'll be a
- 0:37subscriber. Remember that if you would
- 0:39like our help in designing your room,
- 0:41you can have that help by clicking the
- 0:43link in the description below. The core
- 0:46goal is alignment. When a room is
- 0:49designed with respect for its owner,
- 0:52something interesting happens. He starts
- 0:54to maintain it. It's kept orderly. He
- 0:56spends time there because he wants to.
- 0:59Not out of obligation, but a returned
- 1:02fondness. Rooms that feel deserving of
- 1:05their owners do three things well. The
- 1:08first is prudence in selection.
- 1:11Eliminating excessiveness. Nothing feels
- 1:14accidental. The materials feel chosen
- 1:17rather than defaulted to. This approach
- 1:19lowers visual noise, and without that
- 1:22noise, nothing has to scream for
- 1:24attention. Give this a try in your room.
- 1:26Remove one object that only exists
- 1:29because it was easy to buy, already
- 1:31there, or had nowhere else to go. Don't
- 1:33replace it. Don't upgrade it. Just
- 1:36remove it. If the room feels calmer
- 1:38instead of emptier, you've just lowered
- 1:40visual noise. Secondly, the room carries
- 1:43weight. Genuine materials, honest
- 1:46finishes, visual gravity. The room feels
- 1:49anchored and decisive, and that's always
- 1:51easy to get behind. One way you might do
- 1:54this is to replace a lightweight or
- 1:57temporary feeling item with something
- 1:59more authentic. You could try swapping a
- 2:02hollow side table for a solid wood one.
- 2:05Replace a lightweight lamp with one made
- 2:07of real metal. or move one stable,
- 2:10difficult to ignore piece into the room.
- 2:13A solid desk, a reading chair, an
- 2:15impressive sideboard or cabinet. Before
- 2:18you buy anything, look around the house.
- 2:20You may already have something that's
- 2:22perfect for the task. Finally, character
- 2:25continuity. This is when the man in the
- 2:27room feels like the room could only
- 2:30belong to him. Not a magazine, not a
- 2:32rental, not a fleeting phase. It feels
- 2:35as though it has moved through time with
- 2:37him. And because of that, it feels
- 2:39familiar. You begin doing this by
- 2:41removing one or two items in your room
- 2:43that signal anyone could live here and
- 2:46replace them with items which only make
- 2:48sense for you. A book you've read and
- 2:51constantly return to, an object tied to
- 2:54a period in your life, a framed
- 2:56commemoration with personal relevance,
- 2:58or a tool or instrument connected to
- 3:01your interests. It wouldn't make sense
- 3:03in someone else's home, but it makes
- 3:05sense in yours. When you have all three
- 3:08of these, now the room begins to respect
- 3:10you and you'll reciprocate that
- 3:12admiration. Before you start making
- 3:14changes, how can you tell if you are in
- 3:17this state of dissonance? Although
- 3:19quiet, there will be signs. A reluctance
- 3:22to invite people over, a sense that the
- 3:25room is fine but uninspiring. [snorts]
- 3:27Difficulty focusing or settling into
- 3:30deep work, constantly thinking that the
- 3:32space needs something without really
- 3:34knowing what. feeling more energized
- 3:36outside the home than inside it. Not
- 3:39always, but often that points to
- 3:41friction. One item not fitted to
- 3:43another, like trying to tighten a lug
- 3:46nut with a hammer. The two are not meant
- 3:48for one another. For a person oriented
- 3:51toward growth, in business, craft,
- 3:54skill, or self-comand, his environment
- 3:56can act in one of two ways, and both of
- 3:59them are equally powerful. It can act in
- 4:02silent support or subtle sabotage. When
- 4:05the home doesn't match his internal
- 4:06compass, it's like watching a tree
- 4:08resist a bulldozer. The roots will hold
- 4:11temporarily, but eventually they will
- 4:13give way. Standards weaken, momentum
- 4:15waines, discipline feels heavier than it
- 4:18should. Will a lacking room or home stop
- 4:20an individual completely from getting
- 4:22where they want to go or being what they
- 4:24want to be? No, of course not. But it
- 4:27won't help either. Can a small paddle
- 4:30boat make it across a river with a few
- 4:32pin holes in it? Possibly it would be
- 4:35smarter to seal the leaks before you
- 4:37start paddling, though. Let's talk about
- 4:39shifting a space to match identity.
- 4:41Before the shopping list, focus on
- 4:44reframing, changing how you view the
- 4:46space. Start by identifying a clear use
- 4:49and make that purpose apparent. Ask
- 4:51yourself, what is this room meant to
- 4:53support? What version of me uses it at
- 4:56his best? What behaviors should feel
- 4:58natural here? A reading room that
- 5:00doesn't invite reading has failed its
- 5:02purpose. Okay, but what about style? How
- 5:05do I choose the right interior style?
- 5:08Style is downstream of values. Instead
- 5:11of asking, what do I like? Ask, do I
- 5:13value clarity or comfort? Do I want the
- 5:16room to feel stable or grand? Is this
- 5:19space meant for retreat, focus, hosting,
- 5:22or reflection? With those answers,
- 5:25you're able to express the description
- 5:27of what you are looking for. When it
- 5:29comes to choosing the colors that are
- 5:31going to appear in your room, think
- 5:33about the intended mood. Deeper tones
- 5:35support focus and authority. Muted
- 5:38pallets reduce mental noise. Contrast
- 5:40exemplifies deliberate decision. Which
- 5:43of these surroundings would benefit you
- 5:45most? Next, try including a few better
- 5:48pieces. Have the objects in your room
- 5:50earned their place? Are they anchors or
- 5:53distractions? Do they feel provisional
- 5:55or permanent? A room that presents
- 5:57itself as resolute will have pieces that
- 6:00required commitment. Accents are the
- 6:03last item, the icing on the cake. Many
- 6:05make the mistake of trying to form their
- 6:07room's identity through accents. Art,
- 6:10lighting, objects, small decor. These
- 6:13are only added after the identity is
- 6:16confirmed. They're punctuations to
- 6:18well-written sentences. You wouldn't
- 6:20place a question mark or exclamation
- 6:23point before the beginning of a sentence
- 6:25that would leave your reader confused.
- 6:27Only after forming a coherent thought
- 6:30would you choose the punctuation that's
- 6:33best suited to the messages purpose.
- 6:35When a man has the room he deserves, it
- 6:38doesn't just motivate, it permits. It
- 6:41permits focus. It permits serenity. It
- 6:44permits pride. And from that permission,
- 6:48his output becomes optimal. If you like
- 6:51the video, hit the thumbs up. If you
- 6:52feel like sticking around a while, feel
- 6:54free to subscribe. See you on the next
- 6:56one.
