- 0:00This is every major phone operating
- 0:01system explained. Palm OS. Palm OS is
- 0:05one of the earliest operating systems
- 0:07designed for smart mobile devices. First
- 0:09introduced back in the 1990s, it was
- 0:11originally developed for PDAs and later
- 0:13adapted for some of the first
- 0:14smartphones. The system was easy to use
- 0:16and very lightweight with low resource
- 0:19consumption. However, it failed to
- 0:20evolve at the pace of the mobile
- 0:22industry and [music] was officially
- 0:23discontinued in 2011. Symbian OS. Before
- 0:27the modern smartphone era even existed,
- 0:29Symbian was the most widely used mobile
- 0:31operating system in the world.
- 0:34Introduced in the late 1990s and
- 0:35extremely popular throughout the 2000s,
- 0:38Symbian was primarily used on Nokia
- 0:40phones, but it was also adopted by
- 0:42several other manufacturers. The system
- 0:44was originally designed for button-based
- 0:46phones, offering basic multitasking and
- 0:48simple applications. Although
- 0:49touchscreen support was added later on,
- 0:51its complex architecture and unintuitive
- 0:53interaction model were never truly built
- 0:55for a modern touchf first experience. As
- 0:58a result, Symbion was officially
- 1:00abandoned around 2014. BlackBerry OS.
- 1:03BlackBerry OS has its roots in
- 1:05BlackBerry Pagers, quickly becoming the
- 1:07standard for business communication in
- 1:08the early 2000s. The first phones
- 1:11running BlackBerry OS appeared in 2002,
- 1:13introducing real-time push email,
- 1:15advanced multitasking, and centralized
- 1:18control through proprietary server
- 1:19infrastructure. However, its design,
- 1:22heavily focused on physical keyboards,
- 1:24made it difficult to adapt to the
- 1:25touchscreen era. Still, if you remember
- 1:27how satisfying it was to type on a
- 1:29BlackBerry, let us know in the comments.
- 1:31As a result, the system struggled to
- 1:33transition toward touchscreen interfaces
- 1:35and modern multimedia applications. In
- 1:372013, BlackBerry attempted a reset with
- 1:39BlackBerry 10, a new gesture-based
- 1:42operating system designed specifically
- 1:43for touchscreens, but its late launch
- 1:45and the lack of applications ultimately
- 1:47led to the platform's permanent decline.
- 1:50Windows [music] Phone. Microsoft entered
- 1:52the mobile market in the early 2000s
- 1:54with Windows Mobile, an operating system
- 1:57derived from Windows CE, originally
- 1:59designed for PDAs and stylus-driven
- 2:01devices. Although it offered advanced
- 2:03features and strong integration with the
- 2:04Microsoft ecosystem, the experience felt
- 2:07closer to a miniaturized PC than to a
- 2:09modern smartphone. As a result, in 2010,
- 2:12Microsoft relaunched the platform under
- 2:14the name Windows Phone, introducing a
- 2:16completely new user interface based on
- 2:18live tiles. The system was smooth and
- 2:20well optimized, but the limited app
- 2:22ecosystem and low developer interest
- 2:24significantly restricted its adoption.
- 2:26In 2015, Microsoft attempted one final
- 2:29transition with Windows 10 Mobile, but
- 2:31the platform was officially discontinued
- 2:33in 2017.
- 2:35iOS. iOS is the mobile operating system
- 2:38developed by Apple. First released in
- 2:402007 alongside the original iPhone.
- 2:42Initially known as iPhone OS, iOS was
- 2:45built from the ground up for touchscreen
- 2:46interaction with no physical keyboard or
- 2:49stylus, completely redefining how a
- 2:51smartphone is used. iOS is well known
- 2:53for being a closed operating system
- 2:55developed exclusively for Apple
- 2:57hardware. This approach allows for very
- 2:59tight integration between software and
- 3:00internal components. Updates are
- 3:02delivered directly by Apple and roll out
- 3:04simultaneously to all supported devices,
- 3:06effectively eliminating fragmentation.
- 3:09The platform prioritizes stability,
- 3:11performance, and security, often at the
- 3:13expense of advanced customization. In
- 3:15addition, iOS introduced several
- 3:16concepts that later became industry
- 3:18standards, such as the modern
- 3:20touch-based interface, a centralized app
- 3:22store, and a tightly controlled
- 3:23application ecosystem. This model helped
- 3:25define the modern smartphone and
- 3:27directly influence the emergence and
- 3:29evolution of Android. Android is a
- 3:32mobile operating system developed by
- 3:33Google. The platform is built on the
- 3:35Linux kernel on top of which Google
- 3:37developed its own software framework,
- 3:39user interface, and application
- 3:40ecosystem. Pure Android in its
- 3:43completely unmodified form is available
- 3:45on Google's Pixel smartphones. Other
- 3:47brands such as Nokia, Motorola or Sony
- 3:49use versions that are very close to
- 3:51stock Android with only minor
- 3:53proprietary tweaks. The main advantages
- 3:55of stock Android include fast updates,
- 3:57an intuitive interface, strong
- 3:59stability, and the absence of
- 4:00manufacturer imposed bloatware. Android
- 4:03is distributed as open-source software,
- 4:05meaning manufacturers are free to use
- 4:07the core codebase to create their own
- 4:09implementations. On a global scale,
- 4:11Android is the most widely used mobile
- 4:14operating system. It runs on billions of
- 4:16devices ranging from affordable
- 4:17smartphones to cutting edge flagship
- 4:19models and is present in nearly every
- 4:21market worldwide. Its popularity is
- 4:24driven by broad compatibility, a high
- 4:26degree of customization freedom, and a
- 4:27massive application ecosystem available
- 4:30through Google Play. Because Android is
- 4:32distributed as open-source software,
- 4:34numerous custom interfaces and software
- 4:36derivatives have been developed on top
- 4:37of it. These are created by different
- 4:39manufacturers to differentiate their
- 4:41devices and to add proprietary features.
- 4:43Thus, we have 1 UI. [music]
- 4:46One UI is Samsung's custom interface
- 4:48built on top of Android. It
- 4:50significantly changes the systems visual
- 4:52design and structure with a strong focus
- 4:54on ergonomics, one-handed usability, and
- 4:56deep integration with the Samsung
- 4:58ecosystem. Although it is still based on
- 5:00Android at its core, the overall user
- 5:02experience is clearly distinct. MIUI
- 5:05MIUI is Xiaomi's Android-based interface
- 5:08used on its smartphones and mobile
- 5:09devices from 2010 until 2024, replaced
- 5:12by Xiaomi HyperOS. [music] It offers a
- 5:15cleaner interface, faster app loading,
- 5:17and established connectivity between
- 5:18devices. [music]
- 5:19It feels like I've seen something like
- 5:21this before.
- 5:23Oxygen OS. Oxygen OS is the interface
- 5:26originally associated with OnePlus. In
- 5:29its early days, it was very close to
- 5:30stock Android. Over time, however, it
- 5:33evolved by integrating elements from
- 5:34Color OS, the system developed by OPPO,
- 5:37resulting in a more complex experience
- 5:39that is noticeably different from
- 5:40standard Android. Color OS. Color OS is
- 5:44OPPO's modified Android platform focused
- 5:46on animations, smart features, and
- 5:48aggressive battery optimizations.
- 5:51MUI. MUI was Huawei's Android-based
- 5:54interface until 2019. After losing
- 5:57access to Google services, Huawei began
- 5:59transitioning to Harmony OS, its own
- 6:01operating system, which in certain
- 6:03versions still maintains compatibility
- 6:05with Android applications.
