- 0:00This is the R six Mark III and this is
- 0:02the R5 Mark II. But these are just two
- 0:05of the cameras in Canon's lineup. In
- 0:07front of us are all of these cameras.
- 0:10So, which one is best and which one
- 0:12should you get?
- 0:13>> In this video, we're going to discuss
- 0:14all of the best Canon cameras out right
- 0:17now and some that are not so best.
- 0:20>> So, if you're in the market for a new
- 0:22camera, you can use this video as a
- 0:24starting point
- 0:25>> to help you understand which Canon
- 0:27camera is best for you. It's kind of
- 0:29like, you know, when twins finish each
- 0:30other's.
- 0:30>> Yeah, it's very weird.
- 0:31>> It might be a little too too much.
- 0:33>> So, the Canon R100 is the cheapest, the
- 0:37least expensive, although I do want to
- 0:38say cheapest camera that Canon currently
- 0:40makes. Will, have you have you tried,
- 0:42have you heard of the R100?
- 0:43>> I've heard of the R100. I haven't
- 0:44personally used it, though.
- 0:45>> So, you know that it doesn't have a flip
- 0:47screen?
- 0:48>> Yeah. Or a lot of the buttons that more
- 0:51expensive cameras have,
- 0:52>> which is the challenge. And I think
- 0:53Canon has always been really good at
- 0:56just offering a very budget friendly
- 0:59option. So going back to like the Rebel
- 1:00days, I started with a Rebel T1, which
- 1:03probably cost like $400 or $500, the
- 1:05same price as the R100, but it does lack
- 1:09a lot. And I I struggle to recommend it
- 1:11to someone who is wants to go super
- 1:14cheap,
- 1:15>> especially because you can go just a
- 1:17little bit higher and get what in my
- 1:19opinion is a much better camera,
- 1:21especially if you're shooting video.
- 1:23>> You could go with a RP or an R10. Which
- 1:26one are you thinking?
- 1:26>> I see an R50V.
- 1:28>> Let's say you have a $1,500 budget,
- 1:30right? That's what I'm starting with.
- 1:31We're all going to go US prices. You
- 1:32spend $500 on either an R100 or six in a
- 1:37bit on an R50. you could pair that with
- 1:39a $1,000 lens,
- 1:40>> which would make a significant impact to
- 1:42image quality compared to just having a
- 1:44couple more megapixels or an extra
- 1:46button or dial in your camera.
- 1:48>> Now, there is a difference between the
- 1:49R50 and the R50V. The V, you can think
- 1:53of it as standing for video, but also
- 1:55like vlogging. Now, the nice thing with
- 1:57the 50V is it it doesn't have the
- 2:00viewfinder, so it's going to be a little
- 2:01bit more compact. You do get all of
- 2:03those video modes. You get a front and a
- 2:06rear recording button. So, if you're
- 2:08going to be doing like vertical content,
- 2:09there's like a tripod plate on the side.
- 2:12You can basically hold it like that or
- 2:14mount it like that and shoot all of your
- 2:16horizontal content, all of your video
- 2:18content. It's very much like a
- 2:20entry-level content creator ccentric
- 2:22camera. And although it doesn't have the
- 2:24viewfinder, I think it's really nice
- 2:25because you can still use it for photos,
- 2:27right?
- 2:27>> Absolutely. There's not really anything
- 2:29on here that is limiting that other than
- 2:31the viewfinder. But, ever since we
- 2:33switched to EVFs, most people are
- 2:34looking at the screens anyways. It still
- 2:36has the RF mount like all of these here.
- 2:38So, you can invest in some really nice
- 2:40glass for a camera like this. And then
- 2:42in 5 years, if things have taken off and
- 2:44you want to get something more like an
- 2:46R5 or an R six3, those same high quality
- 2:49lenses are still going to work on your
- 2:52newer cameras. And I think for a lot of
- 2:54vloggers, a lot of YouTubers, the camera
- 2:56that was super popular was the M50. And
- 2:59so, the 50 series is effectively that
- 3:01spiritual successor. So, this is already
- 3:03a popular camera. If you're in this
- 3:05price bracket, this would be the first
- 3:08camera in that budget line of sub $1,000
- 3:11that I would probably jump to.
- 3:13>> Anthony, would you ever buy the R100?
- 3:15>> The Canon R100? Yeah.
- 3:16>> You mean the camera that Canon made with
- 3:18no flip screen and basically no buttons
- 3:21and the worst build quality ever.
- 3:24>> Yeah. What's going on, Canon?
- 3:25>> Every other camera they made has a tilt
- 3:28flip screen. even the uh even the
- 3:30PowersShot V1, the Canon R50, which you
- 3:33know for what $150 more, you get a way
- 3:37better,
- 3:37>> much better value
- 3:38>> video package. Just saying if I had a
- 3:41choice between buying an R100 or not
- 3:42buying an R100, I would not buy an R100.
- 3:46>> The reality is at that price point, your
- 3:49phone can get some pretty simil
- 3:51>> 100%. Your iPhone takes better video
- 3:54than a Canon. Canon's not going to be
- 3:56happy that I said that. But you've got
- 3:59log, Apple log versus the R100. You
- 4:03don't shoot with your phone. Shoot with
- 4:05your phone. But if all I had to do was
- 4:06photos, I would consider the R100 as
- 4:10long as you're pairing it with a really
- 4:11nice lens like like something like a 24
- 4:13to 105 F4 and maybe you're doing photos
- 4:16for your small business or for whatever.
- 4:19I think that is the only case I would
- 4:23consider getting it. In any other case,
- 4:25I would immediately step up to a R50 or
- 4:27an R50V.
- 4:27>> Okay.
- 4:28>> Oh, hold on. I got a question for you.
- 4:29If you had a choice between the Canon
- 4:31R50 and the R50V,
- 4:33so you get a viewfinder with one, not a
- 4:36viewfinder with the other, but better
- 4:38video with the V. I if I was going to
- 4:41choose between one of them, R50V feels
- 4:43like the better value to me because it
- 4:45has better video features like Clog 3.
- 4:48It can go longer without overheating.
- 4:50Yes, you lose the viewfinder, but in my
- 4:53opinion, that's not a massive trade-off
- 4:55if you still want to take photos because
- 4:57you get the screen, which is similar to
- 5:00an EVF. Anyways,
- 5:01>> can I be honest? The amount of times
- 5:03that I've used the R50V and gone like
- 5:06>> gone like this.
- 5:07>> I've done that with the PowerShot V1.
- 5:09I'm like, "Oh, there's no viewfinder
- 5:10here."
- 5:11>> Yeah,
- 5:11>> Jared Poland wants a viewfinder. He'd be
- 5:14very not happy about me or you saying
- 5:17that. So R50 and R50V budget friendly
- 5:20APS-C, but if you are budget friendly
- 5:23entry level for full-frame, you're
- 5:25looking at the Canon RP,
- 5:27>> which is one of the first mirrorless
- 5:28cameras that Canon ever made.
- 5:30>> And it's still in production, which
- 5:32means you could do the same sort of
- 5:33thing where maybe you have like a
- 5:34$1,500, $1,600, $1,700 budget. You pay
- 5:38what is it like $750
- 5:41for the camera depending on if you get
- 5:42it on sale. Pair that with a 24 to 105
- 5:44and you have a really solid combination
- 5:47for photo. Maybe not so much for video
- 5:49because you don't get log. You don't get
- 5:51as many features as you would with some
- 5:52of these higherend cameras, but we'll
- 5:54talk about those video features in just
- 5:56a bit. There are some downsides to the
- 5:58RP though because it was one of Canon's
- 6:00first tries. They learned a lot from the
- 6:03R and the RP.
- 6:04>> Not the best autofocus.
- 6:06>> Yeah, it uses the Digic 8 processor.
- 6:08>> So older, slower. When Canon released
- 6:11the original R six, which we have here,
- 6:14not currently in production anymore.
- 6:15That one's been retired, and the R5,
- 6:17which is still in production, again,
- 6:18we'll talk about that one in a bit.
- 6:20Those cameras really made an improvement
- 6:22on the R and the RP. And if you've tried
- 6:25any of those cameras and you even try
- 6:27the original R six and you you go into
- 6:29the autofocus, it is like night and day
- 6:32difference.
- 6:32>> As sort of an honorable mention, we have
- 6:34the PowersShot V1.
- 6:35>> We have two of them.
- 6:36>> We we each have one. It's a little bit
- 6:38different than any other camera on this
- 6:40list because it's not a typical
- 6:42interchangeable lens camera. This is an
- 6:44interesting one because
- 6:45>> no viewfinder.
- 6:45>> No viewfinder, but you do actually get
- 6:48some really powerful video features
- 6:49considering how small this is. It's got
- 6:51a built-in fan so it doesn't overheat
- 6:53very easily. It has clog 3 4K 10 bit in
- 6:56this little camera.
- 6:57>> Holy man, you know all the specs, don't
- 6:59you?
- 6:59>> It does.
- 6:59>> Did you know that it has the same
- 7:01autofocusing system as the Canon R six
- 7:03Mark II?
- 7:04>> Yeah. DIC X processor in this which
- 7:06makes it super capable.
- 7:08>> So I like this a lot as a casual camera
- 7:10and a supplementary camera.
- 7:12>> You can fit it in your pocket.
- 7:13>> You can fit it in your pocket and you
- 7:15can even color match it pretty easily to
- 7:18>> Is it in frame? Hold on.
- 7:19>> Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yep.
- 7:20>> No, that one.
- 7:21>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're good there.
- 7:22Yeah. So, it's shoots high quality video
- 7:24that you can match pretty easily to
- 7:27Canon's more professional cameras. I
- 7:28wouldn't necessarily recommend this if
- 7:30it's your only camera, unless you really
- 7:32love the point andoot form factor. Plus,
- 7:34it's at a much higher price point than
- 7:36something like the R50V, which is a lot
- 7:39more versatile of a camera. I think if
- 7:41you are in the market for a vlog
- 7:43friendly camera and you never want to
- 7:45change your lens, the V1 has that
- 7:48built-in lens. Now, you might want to
- 7:50compare it to something like a Sony ZV1
- 7:52Mark II, but the Canon by most measures
- 7:57beats it out on the video spec side. The
- 7:59Sony does have a slightly lower aperture
- 8:02lens. I think it goes down to like f1.8
- 8:04or something like that, whereas the
- 8:05Canon goes down to f/2.8. But still very
- 8:09capable, a great sensor, a great
- 8:11processor, and a great option if you
- 8:14want something small, lightweight, and
- 8:15compact. One option that's not on the
- 8:17table. Now, we've talked about the R50
- 8:19and the R50V, but you could step up to
- 8:22something like an R10. The big
- 8:24difference between a 50 and a 10 is that
- 8:27you're going to get more control. So,
- 8:29you get a joystick on the 10. I believe
- 8:31you get a rear dial to like tweak all of
- 8:34your settings.
- 8:34>> You get a viewfinder,
- 8:35>> so it's a little bit nicer in your
- 8:36hands,
- 8:37>> a little more photocentric.
- 8:38>> It's a little bit more Oh, definitely
- 8:40more photocentric than the V. But if you
- 8:42do have a little bit more budget and
- 8:43you're like, I want something that's
- 8:45just a little bit more substantial
- 8:47without going crazy, I think that is the
- 8:49market that the 10 is for. But you could
- 8:53also step up to something like an R8 for
- 8:57a couple hundred more, again depending
- 8:59on sale, and get a full-frame camera.
- 9:01>> I think the R10 is in a tricky price
- 9:04point because you can go a little bit
- 9:05cheaper and actually get more video
- 9:07features with the R50V if that's
- 9:09something you're looking for. And then
- 9:11you can also go a little bit more
- 9:12expensive and get something like the R8
- 9:14full capabilities
- 9:15>> with fullframe.
- 9:16>> And then a fun fact is that the R8
- 9:19actually has the same internals and the
- 9:21same sensor as the R six Mark I. Is this
- 9:24the two? That is the original. There's
- 9:27too many cameras on the table. But the R
- 9:29six2, the PowersShot V1, and then the R8
- 9:33kind of sits in between. So if you So
- 9:36for some people this is actually going
- 9:37to be a disadvantage. The uh R8 has no
- 9:40IBIS, no inbody image stabilization,
- 9:42which means it might be a little bit
- 9:44trickier for photos. You won't be able
- 9:46to like do as slow a shutter speed, but
- 9:48for videos, some people like it because
- 9:50you don't get the jello walls.
- 9:52>> I think the R it's a nice option if
- 9:54full-frame is really important to you.
- 9:56But there's still a few features that
- 9:57were missing on it that would make it
- 9:59more geared towards professionals.
- 10:01>> Canon R7,
- 10:03have you tried one?
- 10:04>> I've briefly tried an R seven. The
- 10:07problem is the same with the R10 where
- 10:08it's a little bit of an in between
- 10:10camera and there are more expensive
- 10:12cameras, slightly more expensive cameras
- 10:13that have better features and then
- 10:15slightly less expensive cameras that
- 10:18might be again like the R8.
- 10:20>> It's at an interesting point because
- 10:21it's the first camera in this lineup
- 10:23that I would consider to be a truly
- 10:25professional professional camera
- 10:27>> camera because we have things now like
- 10:29the fullsize batteries and dual SD card
- 10:32slots which is very important when
- 10:33you're getting paid for your work.
- 10:35>> IBIS. ibis as well.
- 10:36>> It is the first camera in Canon's lineup
- 10:39to have inbody image stabilization. Dual
- 10:42card slots for safety and redundancy.
- 10:44>> Very important. I think the problem is a
- 10:46lot of people conflate full-frame with
- 10:49professional and crop sensor with entry
- 10:52level. While that sometimes is the case,
- 10:54we usually see full-frame sensors in the
- 10:56more high-end cameras. Crop sensor isn't
- 10:59inherently unprofessional or worse
- 11:01quality. If you had a choice between the
- 11:03Canon R seven and the Canon R8 and they
- 11:06cost the exact same price, which one
- 11:09would you buy?
- 11:09>> If they're the exact same price, I think
- 11:11I'm going with the R seven specifically
- 11:14because it has dual SD card slots. I
- 11:16charge money for a lot of the things I
- 11:18do. And it's important to me that I know
- 11:21as soon as I shoot, I have a copy and
- 11:23I'm not going to just lose that footage
- 11:26that someone's paying me for because of
- 11:28an SD card error.
- 11:29>> I just want my fulls size batteries.
- 11:31Yeah, that too. Does it use like the V1
- 11:33batteries? Is it like these little guys
- 11:34or is it something different?
- 11:35>> I believe it is those. Hold on. Where's
- 11:37the R8?
- 11:37>> These are the E7.
- 11:39>> Here's the problem. Yeah, look at this.
- 11:40Look at this. This is the problem.
- 11:48Nope. Wrong way.
- 11:53First try. Exactly. But yeah, this is
- 11:56the challenge with the R8 is that the
- 11:58batteries are smaller. Uh, apparently
- 12:00they're harder to figure out which way
- 12:02>> they are. I've noticed that with the V1,
- 12:05this is a whole side tangent rant. These
- 12:07batteries are perfectly symmetric.
- 12:10They're they're fully rectangular. So,
- 12:12you take something like a Canon, that
- 12:15one's empty. So, you take something like
- 12:17a regular Canon battery, it's got the
- 12:19curve to it. So, you know, immediately
- 12:22you see the little shiny thing on the
- 12:23battery and you see the curve and you
- 12:24know, I know it goes in like that. I
- 12:26don't have to look at it. I can just do
- 12:28it. But these look reversible both side
- 12:32to side and upside down. And I I swear
- 12:36every single time I put one of these
- 12:38batteries in my V1, I put it in the
- 12:40wrong way. And I take it out and I go,
- 12:42"Oh, I must have done that wrong." And I
- 12:43flip it around and I put it in again and
- 12:45it's still the wrong way and I go, "Oh,
- 12:46I must have done that wrong again."
- 12:48>> All right. Well, I've got a challenge
- 12:49for you.
- 12:49>> All right.
- 12:50>> Close your eyes.
- 12:51>> Yep.
- 12:51>> And I'm going to hand you this uh Canon
- 12:54LP17 battery.
- 12:56>> Oh, boy. And you need to put it in your
- 12:58camera without looking first try.
- 13:01>> Oh god. Okay.
- 13:03[Music]
- 13:04Uh,
- 13:06[Music]
- 13:08nope. Nope. That didn't work.
- 13:09>> Hold it up so they can see.
- 13:11>> Uh, okay. So, oh. Oh, no. See, you think
- 13:15it's going.
- 13:15>> You put it in the wrong way,
- 13:16>> but it doesn't go in all the way. So,
- 13:18then I flip it around. Okay. No, this is
- 13:20the right direction.
- 13:22>> Still get another Wait, wait. Then I go
- 13:25this. So that it has to be has to be
- 13:27this way. Boom. Ready to shoot.
- 13:31>> Just saying if you had a photo shoot in
- 13:32the dark and you had like 5 seconds to
- 13:35change uh your battery, you would
- 13:36probably be missing the shot.
- 13:38>> That was really funny.
- 13:38>> Where's the real Where's the
- 13:39>> This is my battery, right?
- 13:40>> Oh yeah, that is
- 13:41>> I literally I can't even
- 13:42>> Hold on. Which camera has a battery in
- 13:44it?
- 13:44>> Uh oh, yours. None of these have
- 13:45batteries. Oh my gosh. Now do it with
- 13:48the regular Canyon batteries. First take
- 13:50close your eyes. There's only two ways
- 13:51this can go in cuz I can feel the curve
- 13:53of it.
- 13:55We either got this way,
- 13:57which doesn't work, so we go this way.
- 14:00Done. That was like 5 seconds versus 30.
- 14:04All right, it's Anony's turn. This is
- 14:05the R8. Oh my gosh. Please. Okay. And
- 14:09this is an LP17 battery.
- 14:12>> Okay. Can you put this in the camera
- 14:14without looking?
- 14:17[Music]
- 14:21To be clear, that was pure luck.
- 14:24>> I don't know, man. I just got the
- 14:26skills. What? We got the playback. That
- 14:28was very coincidental.
- 14:30>> That was I didn't think that was going
- 14:30to happen.
- 14:31>> I didn't think that was going to happen
- 14:32either. Here's your battery.
- 14:33>> You know, it actually worked out
- 14:34perfectly terrible for me in the other
- 14:36way because I tried every single
- 14:38direction. Now, we've got the R six Mark
- 14:40I.
- 14:41>> Okay.
- 14:42>> And an LP E6P battery.
- 14:44>> Okay. Go.
- 14:45>> Go.
- 14:50No.
- 14:52Yeah.
- 14:53So, the next camera on the list is the
- 14:55R6 Mark II. Now, who do you think this
- 14:59is for?
- 15:00>> Well, the 6 series has always been for
- 15:03the proumer or the enthusiast, and it is
- 15:06positioned as a value option, meaning
- 15:09you're getting a lot of what you're
- 15:10getting in a 5 series, but in a less
- 15:13expensive package. So, this is the bang
- 15:15forbuck camera.
- 15:16>> Basically, if you're someone who who
- 15:18whose criteria is I want the best value
- 15:22for my money, then you're going right to
- 15:24an R six or an R six3 and then don't ask
- 15:28any more questions. Like you you can end
- 15:30your search right here. Now, the
- 15:32compromises with an R six series,
- 15:35>> you got some IO differences. You have
- 15:37the micro HDMI, and you can't use the
- 15:40screen if you have a monitor plugged in,
- 15:41which I don't hear a lot of people talk
- 15:43about, but is a very significant video
- 15:45feature in my opinion.
- 15:47>> You're getting a polycarbonate body
- 15:49versus a magnesium alloy body. You're
- 15:51getting in the case of the R six2 SD
- 15:54cards where versus the 5 which has a CF
- 15:57Express and an SD card. However, a lot
- 16:01of those differences are minimized when
- 16:03you step up to an R six Mark III, which
- 16:06we also have here, which has made the
- 16:08whole comparison between the six line
- 16:10and the 5 line a lot more interesting
- 16:12because the R six Mark III bridges the
- 16:14gap of a lot of the differences between
- 16:17the two lineups and is really going to
- 16:19make some people think, do I even need
- 16:21the R5 Mark II or is the R six Mark III
- 16:24going to solve all my problems? So, the
- 16:26three solves the in-out issue because we
- 16:28now have a full-size HDMI. It still
- 16:30doesn't have the flash sync port at the
- 16:34front. It doesn't have that top screen
- 16:36that is the digital mode dial on the R5,
- 16:39which a lot of professionals are going
- 16:40to like. Again, that is a feature that
- 16:42it is reserved for the 5, the R3, and
- 16:46the R1, which again are going to be the
- 16:49unquestioned professionals choice. But
- 16:54if you need a second camera body, like
- 16:55right now, what is your combination of
- 16:57cameras?
- 16:58>> Right now, I am using the R5 Mark II as
- 17:00my main camera and then my R six Mark
- 17:02III as my B camera, both for photo and
- 17:05video for both of them. And the thing
- 17:07that is great about that is now with the
- 17:09R six3 solving some of these problems
- 17:11like clog 2 and it has a CF express slot
- 17:15which is not only nice because of the
- 17:16faster transfer speeds but that also
- 17:19opens up a lot more different video
- 17:21options and formats that just are not
- 17:23available on the R six Mark II. If
- 17:24you're a working professional and you
- 17:26have the money to spend I think the best
- 17:28combination right now is the R52 and the
- 17:30R six Mark III. But if you're someone
- 17:32who is that person who is a proumer who
- 17:36wants the best without having to shell
- 17:38out maybe like $1,000 more for a 5
- 17:40series, the R six Mark III is going to
- 17:43be your best choice. Now, some people
- 17:44will wonder R six Mark III versus R six
- 17:47Mark II, and I think both of us are
- 17:48going to be doing videos on that
- 17:49separately, so make sure you're
- 17:51subscribed to both of us. But to give
- 17:54you a highle summary, what would you
- 17:56say? Rix 3 versus RX2. I would say
- 17:58essentially if you own neither of these
- 18:00cameras right now, the R six Mark III is
- 18:03about $500 US more for the video
- 18:06features. If you are a primary video
- 18:09shooter, I think these new features are
- 18:11absolutely worth it.
- 18:12>> Rix3,
- 18:13>> for the R six3, definitely
- 18:15>> any of the cameras on this table are
- 18:17going to be awesome for photos.
- 18:18Obviously, the more expensive you go,
- 18:20the better it's going to be. Even like
- 18:22the powers shot like can take although I
- 18:24wouldn't recommend it as like a
- 18:26professional camera, you can take good
- 18:27photos on it.
- 18:28>> Pause a second cuz I think my doorbell
- 18:29rang.
- 18:30>> Entertain the camera, Will.
- 18:32>> Anony's got a package. So, I guess it's
- 18:34just you and me right now. Um, this
- 18:35couch is a little bit hard. It's got a
- 18:37nice color to it. And also, what on
- 18:39earth is this? This is a nice studio,
- 18:41though. He's got some cool stuff going
- 18:42on in here. I'll give him that. Check
- 18:43out all these cameras. We have nine
- 18:46cameras on the table right here. No, 10
- 18:48cameras on the table right here. And
- 18:50then we have another three recording
- 18:51this. We got R six Mark III, R5 Mark II,
- 18:54R six Mark III. This is too many
- 18:56cameras. This is more cameras than
- 18:58anyone ever needs. Does it make anyone
- 19:00else nervous when you see the photos or
- 19:03videos of like the B-roll of the camera,
- 19:05but the sensor's open? Why are we do I
- 19:06don't want dust on my I'm not doing
- 19:08thumbnails like that. I don't want dust
- 19:09on my sensor. What else can I do?
- 19:10There's a Hasselblad on that shelf. I
- 19:12wonder if Anthony would notice.
- 19:20Where are we? Back to business.
- 19:21>> I I entertained the camera while you
- 19:22were going.
- 19:23>> Oh no.
- 19:23>> Can a $1,000 camera make you money?
- 19:26>> Yeah, but say it again with authority.
- 19:27>> Can a $1,000 camera make you money?
- 19:30>> I think any of these cameras on the
- 19:31table. We have everything ranging from
- 19:33the V1 to the R8 to the R50V to the R
- 19:36six213,
- 19:39R52. Any one of these cameras can make
- 19:41you money. It's not about the value of
- 19:44the camera or even the features of the
- 19:46camera. It really is about how you use
- 19:48it. I've used the PowersShot V1 in a
- 19:52top- down setup rig because it's super
- 19:54light and gets me the shot that I needed
- 19:56to get. Now, could I do that with an
- 19:58R52? Yes. But as soon as I attach a
- 20:01heavier lens, maybe I can't rig it up in
- 20:03the way that I need to. I made money
- 20:05back in the day with my T3. Were the
- 20:07results as good as an R5 Mark II? No.
- 20:09But did people still pay me for them?
- 20:11Were they okay? Sure. The first ever
- 20:14photo gig that I did was literally on my
- 20:16Canon Rebel T1i. I bought an 8
- 20:18millimeter fisheye lens and stitched
- 20:20together a whole bunch of 360 panoramic
- 20:23images. And I will tell this story to
- 20:24the day I die because that paid for the
- 20:27camera multiple times over, allowed me
- 20:29to upgrade my camera, allowed me to buy
- 20:31a telephoto lens, a wide-angle lens, and
- 20:33then go shoot whatever I wanted to
- 20:34because photography wasn't my main
- 20:36thing. It was just a side thing. And so
- 20:38if you're someone who is looking at a
- 20:40camera, spending $1,000, $2,000, or
- 20:42maybe even $3,000 on the top-of-the-line
- 20:45R six, R5, any one of these cameras can
- 20:48make you money, whether as a full-time
- 20:50or a part-time professional. Boom.
- 20:52>> Boom. Short form content.
- 20:54>> Short form content.
- 20:55>> That's how it's done.
- 20:55>> So, we have the R5 and the R52. I think
- 20:58we're going to group them together.
- 20:59>> Yeah, they're pretty similar
- 21:00>> because the R5 series is for a working
- 21:03professional. your wedding
- 21:04photographers, your event photographers,
- 21:06photojournalism,
- 21:08product photography.
- 21:09>> These are the cameras that you only have
- 21:11if you're making a good living off of
- 21:14your cameras or you have way too much
- 21:16extra money sitting around.
- 21:18>> If you're uncle, you know, the rich
- 21:20uncle, and you got the money to blow $45
- 21:22$5,000 and go buy a bunch of RF lenses,
- 21:25by all means, go blow your money now.
- 21:29>> Use our links in the description.
- 21:30>> Use the links down in the description.
- 21:32Mine wills, whatever. We'll put our
- 21:33favorite cameras from this list down
- 21:35there. The 5 series has a better build
- 21:37quality. It has usually the latest
- 21:41functionality. So, in the case of the R5
- 21:43Mark II, you're getting clog 2. You're
- 21:44getting the latest autofocus. Although,
- 21:46right now, we don't have open gate with
- 21:48the R six3 does. So, that is a problem
- 21:52if you're deciding which camera is right
- 21:54for you. If you are someone who shoots
- 21:56social content or shoots hybrid video,
- 21:59the R six3 does offer some advantages.
- 22:03Right now, I still would lean towards
- 22:06the R5 Mark II. But a more compelling
- 22:10comparison would be the R six Mark III
- 22:14versus the original R5 because right now
- 22:16>> these come in at the same price.
- 22:17>> They're roughly the same price. There is
- 22:19a slight difference depending on sale,
- 22:22but if you had to pick,
- 22:25>> I don't know. I would lean towards the R
- 22:26six Mark III because I think I am
- 22:30primarily shooting videos with like some
- 22:32photos as well. And this just is a
- 22:35better video camera. We don't have a
- 22:37record limit. We still have the CF
- 22:39Express card, so we're not losing out on
- 22:41anything there. We can do open gate.
- 22:44>> We have the smart hot shoe. We got 7K
- 22:46open gate raw. Now, if you're just
- 22:48shooting photos, then the question
- 22:49becomes, is 45 megapixels more important
- 22:52to you, or is things like pre-ontinuous
- 22:55shooting more important to you? I would
- 22:57say if you're a landscape photographer
- 22:58and you want the most resolution, R5
- 23:01original makes the most sense. I think
- 23:03if you want the latest functionality and
- 23:06the latest features, then the R six Mark
- 23:09III probably makes more sense. And the
- 23:11fact that you get that full size HDMI
- 23:12means this is going to be a camera that
- 23:14a lot of people are going to want to rig
- 23:15up. In fact, right now we've got your R
- 23:18six Mark III.
- 23:19>> Yeah.
- 23:19>> rigged up right there. That R six3 is
- 23:22rigged up right there. And the R52. So,
- 23:24we're recording on the latest cameras.
- 23:26And then these are just
- 23:27>> I didn't even realize the original R5
- 23:28had micro HDMI. This is literally the
- 23:32worst port of any ports to ever be
- 23:34invented. It is terrible and should
- 23:36never have been on any professional
- 23:38camera. So, I'm very glad we've moved
- 23:39away from that. I'm going to group the
- 23:40R52 and the R3 and the R1 together
- 23:43because we're getting to a point where
- 23:45if you have that money to spend, you
- 23:46probably know what camera you want. But
- 23:48for those who are curious, the R52, the
- 23:52R3, and the R1 all have stacked sensors.
- 23:58So, they're faster sensors, which means
- 24:00you have better video readout speeds,
- 24:03less rolling shutter. In the case of the
- 24:05R52,
- 24:07you're getting a 14bit electronic
- 24:10shutter. Actually, same thing with the
- 24:11R3 and the R1. Full 14-bit electronic
- 24:14shutter. Which means if you are a fast
- 24:15photographer who wants to shoot action
- 24:18sports, motor sports, anything where you
- 24:20we need to freeze the frame at 1/4,000
- 24:2418,000th of a second, then those cameras
- 24:26are going to be the ones that you want
- 24:27to go with. If you're watching this
- 24:28video, I think it's safe to say these
- 24:30are probably not the cameras you're
- 24:32going to be picking at because the
- 24:33people who need these cameras already
- 24:35know that they need them.
- 24:35>> Is it actually overheating?
- 24:37>> I might have to change.
- 24:37>> You heard it here first, folks. The R
- 24:39six Mark III R3
- 24:42>> better overheating than the R52,
- 24:43apparently.
- 24:44>> Somehow Canon managed to make the R six
- 24:46Mark III more thermally efficient, which
- 24:48is incredible and another testament to
- 24:51how how great this camera is.
- 24:53>> Kind of crazy because the R52 has the
- 24:55vent holes in it. So, you would think
- 24:57even just passively it would be a little
- 24:59cooler.
- 24:59>> Um, I think we should do a open gate hot
- 25:01take.
- 25:02>> Open gate hot take. Like we literally
- 25:03make the cameras hot and that's the take
- 25:06through open gate.
- 25:09So, I've got a hot take. I like the R3
- 25:14more than I like the R1.
- 25:17>> Why?
- 25:18>> Because the R3 has a more compact
- 25:20battery. Like the way it is, it's just
- 25:23more compact.
- 25:24>> Okay. So, the R1 is like big chungus,
- 25:26right? Like, it's the same size as the
- 25:29original 1D. And I don't know why it
- 25:31needs to be that size. Like, I
- 25:33understand the batteries. You get more
- 25:35out of it and there's more grip. And
- 25:37maybe if you're shooting with a super
- 25:38telephoto, there's more to hold on to,
- 25:41but the problem I have with the Canon R1
- 25:43as professional and as fast, I think
- 25:46it's got like a three 3 millisecond
- 25:48readout speed, right? Not quite as fast
- 25:50as the Sony A9 Mark III, which has
- 25:52global shutter, but still no compromises
- 25:54on image quality with the Canon R1. My
- 25:57challenge is that I feel like it didn't
- 25:59need to be that big because it I can't
- 26:01fit it in my camera bag.
- 26:02>> It's It's like so tall and so fat.
- 26:04>> Some people just like bigger cameras.
- 26:06>> Some people like it fat,
- 26:09>> I don't think.
- 26:10>> Some people like it chunky.
- 26:12>> I don't know. Some people like the
- 26:13bigger camera. Like some people still
- 26:14shoot with DSLRs because they like the
- 26:16bigger.
- 26:17>> I don't believe that.
- 26:20Maybe they're just broke. Jessica
- 26:21Klesie, that's who. That's the only
- 26:23person I know. Upgrade to an R5 Mark II.
- 26:25Jessica, this is the most complete
- 26:28Canon's camera lineup has ever been.
- 26:31There's never been a better time to be a
- 26:33Canon shooter. However, we have
- 26:36competitors on the market. And if you
- 26:38are in the price point of an R six or
- 26:41even an R5, you might look at something
- 26:44like the brand new Sony A75, which I
- 26:47don't have yet, or the Nikon ZR. Both
- 26:49have faster partially stacked sensors
- 26:53than the R six Mark III. The Nikon has
- 26:55RAW, Nikon Raw and Red Raw. The Sony
- 26:58does not. The Sony and the Nikon do not
- 27:01have opengate. So Canon right now is in
- 27:03the open gate lineup. Now, there is a
- 27:05question over IBIS and who does it best
- 27:08and Canon wobbles and blah blah blah
- 27:09blah blah, but opengate, do we need open
- 27:13gate? I am glad that open gate is in the
- 27:16R six Mark III and I hope more cameras
- 27:18get it, but honestly, I think it's
- 27:20overrated. OpenGate is cool, but
- 27:24particularly on the R six Mark III, we
- 27:26can only do open gate in 7K right now,
- 27:28which is almost going
- 27:30>> What's wrong with that? What? That means
- 27:32I get 7K this way and 4K this way. So, I
- 27:37can do 4K vertical content.
- 27:38>> I'll tell you what's wrong for YouTube.
- 27:40>> I'll tell you what's wrong with that.
- 27:41Anthony file sizes because we're talking
- 27:43about almost a four times increase in
- 27:46the bit rate on these files from 4K,
- 27:48which means you're going to be filling
- 27:50up your hard drives faster. And
- 27:51personally, I don't like to delete
- 27:52footage that often. And all four
- 27:54>> well, you just need to shoot better. You
- 27:56need to shoot so you never miss. What
- 27:58you need to do is if you don't have open
- 28:00gate, shoot a little bit wider on your
- 28:02lens or step back a little bit with the
- 28:05camera and that's going to give you a
- 28:06similar amount of headroom. We're not
- 28:08getting a crazy 4x3 open gate here where
- 28:11it's basically a square. We're getting
- 28:15step back with the camera. We're only
- 28:17getting a little bit of extra room on
- 28:19the top and bottom. It would
- 28:20>> you know what happens when you step
- 28:21back, right? You lose depth of field.
- 28:23You lose the compression.
- 28:25>> Yeah.
- 28:26>> Yeah. Then you zoom in and
- 28:27>> Yeah, it's not that easy. Look, how do I
- 28:29step back if I'm against a wall?
- 28:31>> I don't know. Maybe just uh frame it up
- 28:33right the first time.
- 28:35>> Do you even own a wideangle lens?
- 28:37>> Oh, I no 24 mm.
- 28:39>> He doesn't even own a wideangle lens.
- 28:40>> Sounds like a skill issue to me.
- 28:41>> Sounds like a pro a money problem to
- 28:43you. Can buy an R52 and an R 63 but
- 28:48can't buy a 15 to 35. What do we tell
- 28:50people? Glass is more important than
- 28:53cameras. And what does Will do? He sells
- 28:56his R six and he's about to sell his R
- 28:58six too, but
- 29:0035.
- 29:00>> How many cameras do you own, Anthony?
- 29:02Let's talk.
- 29:03>> Let's talk about GL glass versus
- 29:05>> Okay, one of at least two of them on on
- 29:07the table don't belong to me. So
- 29:08>> that's fair.
- 29:09>> Like six. One, two, three. I don't need
- 29:13an R1. I don't need an R3. It's nice.
- 29:17The R3 is nice.
- 29:18>> I've held it. feels. I think it's one of
- 29:19the nicest feeling cameras Canon makes
- 29:22in in your hand, but I think it sits in
- 29:24a really weird place because it does you
- 29:28either you could either get the R1 or
- 29:30get the R5 depending on what's important
- 29:31to you and that would solve most of your
- 29:33problems.
- 29:35Camera pyramid.
- 29:38But what if you turn it this way here?
- 29:40Then you have like more of a
- 29:42>> Oh, I see.
- 29:48Tada.
- 29:50Everyone's in the comments. Can I have a
- 29:52camera?
- 29:52>> We need every single one of these. Don't
- 29:54you understand that?
- 29:55>> Plus the three that we're recording on.
- 29:57>> I think this is a good way to wrap it
- 29:58up. If the current can lineup existed as
- 30:00it is today, when you started content
- 30:02creation,
- 30:04what camera would you go with?
- 30:06>> The problem is I could be someone
- 30:08starting social media with no money and
- 30:10I could be starting social media with a
- 30:11little bit of a budget because I my
- 30:12default would be all about an R six Mark
- 30:14III. Like that would that would be the
- 30:16easy answer. I'm thinking about think
- 30:17back to when you bought your original R
- 30:20six. Okay.
- 30:20>> At that point in your career.
- 30:22>> So my first mirrorless camera was an R
- 30:25six. Uh actually it was my first
- 30:26full-frame camera. So I went from crop
- 30:29uh APS-C DSLR to full-frame mirrorless,
- 30:34which was a big jump. And I went
- 30:36straight to an R six because an R5 I
- 30:39couldn't justify. One for the cost and
- 30:41two I didn't need all those extra
- 30:42features.
- 30:43>> Same for me. So, if I was starting over
- 30:45today, I would do the exact same thing.
- 30:47I would get an R six Mark III because it
- 30:49is that value option. Now, for you as a
- 30:52working professional, if I gave you the
- 30:54same question, I I feel like I know the
- 30:56answer, but if you had to start over
- 30:58today with all of the Canon cameras that
- 31:00are available, which one would you go
- 31:02with? I hate to have the same answer
- 31:03because I it's a little bit boring, but
- 31:05I have to say the R six Mark III, it's
- 31:07just the value versus the features that
- 31:09it has are just too good. And it has
- 31:11those professional things like dual SD
- 31:13card slots and clog 2.
- 31:15>> And you also had the R six.
- 31:17>> And I also had the original R6.
- 31:18>> The R six. So we're we were kind of in
- 31:19the same boat where
- 31:20>> I started my professional career with
- 31:22the R six.
- 31:22>> But if we took it down one more notch
- 31:24and said you had maybe like $2,000 to
- 31:26spend. You can either get a really nice
- 31:28camera body and an okay lens or an
- 31:32lens and an okay camera body. What are
- 31:34you doing? What's your combination
- 31:36>> for something like social content? I
- 31:38think cheaper camera, more expensive
- 31:40glass because that is going to give you
- 31:42the best results. So something like the
- 31:44R50V or the R10 and a nicer lens is
- 31:48going to be a more significant impact to
- 31:50your quality of your images.
- 31:52>> So something like this with a 15 to 35
- 31:55f.8.
- 31:56>> Yeah. Or maybe a prime like one of the
- 31:57VCM lenses.
- 31:58>> A nice prime 35 or 24 solid combination.
- 32:02I think if I was shooting
- 32:03professionally, I would go with the R
- 32:05seven and choose a cheaper lens to
- 32:08start.
- 32:09>> You could get the 28 to 70 f/2.8, the
- 32:11STM lens, or you get the wide angle
- 32:13equivalent,
- 32:15>> still get nice image quality
- 32:16>> because there's always the option if
- 32:18you're going for paid client work, that
- 32:20you rent a different lens if you're
- 32:23going for a specific project and you
- 32:25need something nicer, or you just do
- 32:27some paid work and save up for that next
- 32:29lens. But if you need more help deciding
- 32:31between all these cameras, I've actually
- 32:33put a summary, a spreadsheet together
- 32:36that shows you all of the major specs
- 32:38that we've talked about. You can find
- 32:39that linked down in the description
- 32:41along with my favorite camera and Will's
- 32:44favorite camera. Will, anything you need
- 32:46to add, Will?
- 32:48>> Uh, what do you say? Go shoot photos or
- 32:50something.
- 32:50>> We do, but then we go cover up the
- 32:51camera. But there's three cameras far
- 32:53away.
- 32:53>> So maybe I'll do this one, you do that.
- 32:54Can
- 32:54>> we throw something?
- 32:55>> Absolutely not. So until the next one,
- 32:58grab your camera,
- 33:00get out,
- 33:01>> go shoot some photos,
- 33:02>> and go shoot photos.
