- 0:00For nothing is impossible for God. The
- 0:02grace of the Lord be with you all, dear
- 0:04brothers and sisters. Welcome to the
- 0:07Holy Gospel for this day. Let us invoke
- 0:12the Holy Spirit, who illuminates the
- 0:15mind and heart of the Christian, to
- 0:18assimilate the word of God and discover
- 0:21God's will for this day through the
- 0:24Holy Scriptures. In the name of the
- 0:27Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
- 0:29Spirit. Amen. O Holy Spirit, love of
- 0:34the Father and the Son, inspire me
- 0:36always as to what I should think, what
- 0:38I should say, how I should say it, what
- 0:41I should keep silent about, how I
- 0:43should act, and what I should do for
- 0:45the glory of God, the good of souls,
- 0:47and my own sanctification. Holy Spirit,
- 0:52give me sharpness to understand,
- 0:54capacity to retain, method and facility
- 0:57to learn, subtlety to interpret, grace
- 1:00and effectiveness to speak, give me
- 1:03insight in beginning, direction in
- 1:05progressing, and perfection in
- 1:08finishing. Amen. Mary, Mother of the
- 1:14Word, pray for us. Saint Demetrius,
- 1:19martyr, pray for us. Today in the
- 1:23Church, we celebrate Saint Demetrius,
- 1:25martyr. All we know for certain about
- 1:29Saint Demetrius is that he suffered
- 1:31martyrdom during the persecution of
- 1:33Diocletian in Dalmatia. Later on, a
- 1:39prefect of Illyria named Leontius
- 1:42introduced his cult in Thessaloniki. He
- 1:46moved some of his relics there and
- 1:48erected a temple in his honor in both
- 1:51cities. Starting in the 5th century,
- 1:55Thessaloniki became the great center of
- 1:57the cult of Saint Demetrius, and his
- 2:00imposing church was only destroyed in
- 2:021917. According to one story, Saint
- 2:07Demetrius was a citizen of Thessaloniki
- 2:09who was arrested for proclaiming the
- 2:11faith. He was killed without a trial
- 2:15while being detained in a room at the
- 2:18public baths. Another account makes him
- 2:22a Proconsul and Holy Warrior, and in
- 2:25this latter capacity, he almost equaled
- 2:28the popularity of the great legendary
- 2:31figure of Saint George. These two
- 2:35saints were adopted as patrons of the
- 2:38Crusades, and there is a tale that they
- 2:40were seen among their ranks during the
- 2:43Battle of Antioch in 1098. Saint
- 2:48Demetrius is still very popular in the
- 2:50East, and his feast is commemorated
- 2:52with solemnity in the Eastern liturgy.
- 2:56Saint Demetrius, pray for us, and may
- 2:59we also have the courage to give our
- 3:03lives for the cause of God. I share
- 3:08with you the readings for this day from
- 3:11the Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4.
- 3:15Brothers, be good. Be understanding,
- 3:19forgiving one another as God forgave
- 3:21you in Christ. Be imitators of God as
- 3:26dear children, and live in love as
- 3:29Christ loved us and gave himself up for
- 3:33us to God as an offering and a fragrant
- 3:37sacrifice. As for fornication, impurity
- 3:41, indecency, or greed for money, do not
- 3:44even mention them. is improper for the
- 3:47saints. Neither vulgarities, stupidity,
- 3:50or double-meaning phrases. All of this
- 3:54is out of place. Your task is to praise
- 3:58God. Be assured that no one given to
- 4:03fornication, impurity, or greed for
- 4:06money, which is idolatry, will have an
- 4:10inheritance in the kingdom of Christ
- 4:14and of God. Let no one deceive you with
- 4:18false arguments. These are the things
- 4:21that bring God's punishment upon the
- 4:24rebellious. Therefore, do not take part
- 4:28with them. For you were once darkness,
- 4:32but now you are light in the Lord. The
- 4:36Word of God. We praise you, Lord. We
- 4:44pray with Psalm one, responding, let us
- 4:47be imitators of God as beloved children
- 4:51. Blessed is the man who does not
- 4:55follow the counsel of the wicked, nor
- 4:58walks in the path of sinners, nor sits
- 5:00in the assembly of the cynical, but his
- 5:03joy is the law of the Lord and he
- 5:05meditates on his law day and night. Let
- 5:09us be imitators of God as beloved
- 5:11children. He shall be like a tree
- 5:16planted by the stream, yielding fruit
- 5:18in due season and its leaves do not
- 5:21wither, and whatever he undertakes
- 5:23comes to a good end. Not so the wicked,
- 5:26not so. They shall be like chaff that
- 5:30the wind blows away, for the Lord
- 5:32protects the way of the just, but the
- 5:34way of the wicked leads to ruin. Let us
- 5:39be imitators of God as beloved children
- 5:41. We meditate this day on the Gospel of
- 5:47Saint Luke, chapter 13, verses 10 to 17
- 5:50. On a Sabbath, Jesus was teaching in a
- 5:55synagogue. There was a woman who for 18
- 6:00years had been sick because of a spirit
- 6:03and was bent over, unable to stand up
- 6:07straight at all. Upon seeing her, Jesus
- 6:11called her and said, "Woman, you are
- 6:14set free from your infirmity." He laid
- 6:18his hands on her and immediately she
- 6:20stood up straight and began to glorify
- 6:23God. But the synagogue official,
- 6:27indignant that Jesus had cured on the
- 6:29Sabbath, said to the crowd, there are
- 6:32six days for working. Come, then, to be
- 6:37cured on those days and not on the
- 6:40Sabbath. But the Lord answered him and
- 6:44said, "Hypocrites, does not each of you
- 6:48untie his ox or his donkey from the
- 6:52manger on the Sabbath and take it to
- 6:55water?" And this woman, a daughter of
- 7:00Abraham whom Satan has kept bound for
- 7:0218 years, was it not necessary to
- 7:05release her from such a bond on the
- 7:07Sabbath day? As he said these words,
- 7:12his enemies were shamed and all the
- 7:15people rejoiced at all the wonders he
- 7:17was doing. The Word of the Lord. Glory
- 7:22to you, Lord Jesus. May the words of
- 7:31the Holy Gospel we have heard purify
- 7:34our hearts, our lives, and prepare us
- 7:38to bear fruits of holiness this day.
- 7:44Dear brothers and sisters, the apostle
- 7:47Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians,
- 7:49gives us an exhortation to live happily
- 7:52, to live authentically as Christians.
- 7:57when he tells us, "Be kind,
- 8:00compassionate, forgiving one another as
- 8:04God forgave you in Christ. Be imitators
- 8:10of God, as beloved children, and live
- 8:13in love as Christ loved you and gave
- 8:15himself up for you." This is what it
- 8:21means to be a Christian. This is what
- 8:24it means to live as God desires. Many
- 8:28are asking, what is His will for me
- 8:31this day? What is God's will for me
- 8:35today? Here it is, very clear and
- 8:38simple. To live in love, because we
- 8:43need love to be kind and compassionate.
- 8:48To forgive one another just as God
- 8:50forgives us. To imitate Jesus in His
- 8:54goodness and His mercy, we need to be
- 8:56filled with love. Let the love of God
- 9:00fill you today. Open your hands, your
- 9:03heart, and your lips today and say, "
- 9:06Lord, fill me with your love. Fill me
- 9:10with that presence of the Holy Spirit.
- 9:12We know that love is the Holy Spirit,
- 9:16that love casts out fear, that love
- 9:20gives us strength to give even our
- 9:24lives if necessary, as happened with
- 9:28this great martyr we remember today,
- 9:32Saint Demetrius. For confessing the
- 9:36Catholic faith, for spreading the
- 9:40gospel, he gave his life; he had to
- 9:44give his life, he did not lose it, he
- 9:48gave it freely. This courage, this
- 9:53strength that sometimes becomes scarce
- 9:55in us to overcome temptation, to do
- 9:58what is right, the Lord wants to give
- 10:00it to us today and He wants to give us
- 10:03His spirit in abundance. He wants to
- 10:07give us in abundance that inner
- 10:10strength that will help us overcome
- 10:13what the apostle points out today as
- 10:16the great ruin of the human being. What
- 10:20is it that makes us miss the kingdom of
- 10:23heaven? that we do not inherit the
- 10:27kingdom of Christ, says the Lord, today
- 10:31through the apostle Paul, such people
- 10:34will have no inheritance in the kingdom
- 10:37of Christ and of God. What are those
- 10:41human activities that deprive us of
- 10:43eternal life, of the kingdom of God,
- 10:46and into which we fall so easily
- 10:49because we become weak? Well, the
- 10:53apostle Paul lists them, he says," Be
- 10:59sure of this, that no one who engages
- 11:02in fornication, impurity, or greed for
- 11:05money, which is idolatry, will have an
- 11:09inheritance in the kingdom of Christ
- 11:12and of God. Let us not be deceived by
- 11:17the enemy. We tend toward fornication.
- 11:24We tend toward vulgarities and
- 11:26stupidities; as Paul says, today we
- 11:29have that tendency called concupiscence
- 11:32, which is like a magnet we have in our
- 11:36flesh toward what is evil, which
- 11:38attracts us to the bad, but we must
- 11:41overcome it with the strength of the
- 11:44Holy Spirit. When a person is full of
- 11:48the love of God, full and strengthened
- 11:51by the Holy Spirit, those temptations,
- 11:54however strong they may be, will not
- 11:57prevail. As the apostle says, resist
- 12:00the enemy and he will flee. When one
- 12:04resists, it is because they are filled
- 12:07with the Holy Spirit. And when
- 12:11temptation, when the enemy notices that
- 12:14we resist, that we stand up to
- 12:16temptation, he flees and goes to look
- 12:19for someone who is weak. Today I
- 12:25encourage you to pray, to cry out to
- 12:28heaven, to ask the Lord to cast out of
- 12:31you all these realities that, as with
- 12:34the woman in the Gospel for many years,
- 12:38the enemy has been oppressing you to
- 12:41the point that with unclean spirits he
- 12:44has even managed to diminish your
- 12:47health. Many physical illnesses are the
- 12:54consequence of sin, they are the
- 12:57consequence of giving room to the work
- 13:03of evil in our lives. That is why the
- 13:07apostle Paul says today, of fornication
- 13:13, impurity, indecency, or greed for
- 13:19money, let alone talk of it; it is
- 13:22improper for saints. Neither should
- 13:26there be vulgarities, stupidities, or
- 13:28double entendres. Look, brothers, how
- 13:34the apostle details many things that we
- 13:37keep letting infiltrate our daily lives
- 13:41. Ah, just a little joke with a double
- 13:43meaning. The apostle says, "That is
- 13:46improper for a Christian, for someone
- 13:48who opens their mouth to receive the
- 13:50body of Christ." It is improper that
- 13:54with those same lips you are uttering
- 13:56jokes and double-meaning phrases. And
- 14:00worse yet, when they are jokes about
- 14:03the things of God, about the Eucharist,
- 14:07about the word of God. Such things
- 14:12cannot be allowed among us because it
- 14:15is improper. But it is true, we are
- 14:20weak. And what to do in the face of
- 14:22that weakness? Well, let the one who is
- 14:26stronger than the tempter set us free.
- 14:31Set us free as He did with that woman
- 14:33on the Sabbath. One Sabbath, Jesus was
- 14:37teaching in a synagogue. There was a
- 14:41woman who for 18 years had been ill
- 14:44because of a spirit and was bent over.
- 14:48There you see the physical consequence
- 14:52of spiritual attack. Many physical
- 14:56illnesses are imposed by evil. They are
- 15:02harvested in the body as a consequence
- 15:06of spiritual decisions that keep eating
- 15:09away at health, that keep damaging the
- 15:12human being. There are natural
- 15:18illnesses, wear and tear on the body,
- 15:20the years, but there are illnesses that
- 15:23we did not seek, and the Lord wants to
- 15:25heal us, He wants to set us free. This
- 15:30woman who ends up stooped, let us
- 15:33imagine a person stooped, bent over for
- 15:3718 years because of a spirit, unable to
- 15:41stand up straight. This woman
- 15:46represents humanity, the human being
- 15:50who is being subdued, who is being
- 15:53stooped, bowed down and subjected by
- 15:57the spirit of evil. Saint Cyril of
- 16:04Alexandria used to say that this person
- 16:12stooped represents the human being who,
- 16:19instead of lifting their gaze to heaven
- 16:22and standing tall to raise their hands
- 16:25and praise God, has decided, on the
- 16:28contrary, to bow down before the works
- 16:33of creation and has ended up idolizing
- 16:36human beings, money, pleasure, and the
- 16:39things of this world. So they have
- 16:44looked downward, toward the earth, and
- 16:47by adopting this posture for so many
- 16:50years, they end up stooped and unable
- 16:53to stand up straight even for a moment,
- 16:56to stand up to praise and bless God.
- 17:02But how beautiful is the miracle that
- 17:03can be observed in the Gospel of Saint
- 17:05Luke. Because when Jesus frees this
- 17:10woman and says to her, "Woman, you are
- 17:12set free from your ailment," He laid
- 17:14His hands on her, and immediately she
- 17:17stood up straight and glorified God.
- 17:20What an impressive miracle. And it is
- 17:24the same miracle that the Lord
- 17:27continues to work year after year,
- 17:29generation after generation, freeing us
- 17:32from the bonds of sin and the diseases
- 17:35it has brought upon us. Father Emiliano
- 17:40Tardif gives much testimony of how
- 17:44people who renounced hatred, sin, who
- 17:47reconciled with God, with their brother
- 17:51, and with themselves, were healed of
- 17:54cancer, migraines, gastritis, ulcers,
- 17:58and so many other ills that came as a
- 18:01consequence of sin, of giving room to
- 18:05evil in human life. This woman stood up
- 18:10straight and, upon doing so, could look
- 18:14toward heaven and could glorify God.
- 18:18Let us allow the Lord to do this same
- 18:20work today. Today the Lord wants to
- 18:24free you from that stoop you have
- 18:27because of hatred, from that stoop you
- 18:29have because of resentment. The Lord
- 18:34today wants to straighten you up from
- 18:37that vice that has led you to bow down,
- 18:39to always be looking toward the ground,
- 18:42idolizing the things of this world. The
- 18:47Lord today wants to give you life. But
- 18:50keep in mind that there are those who
- 18:53will feel envy because of it, who will
- 18:56be annoyed by your intention to draw
- 19:02closer to God, to seek healing, just as
- 19:05it happened in that synagogue. Because
- 19:08then the synagogue leader became
- 19:13indignant because Jesus had healed on
- 19:17the Sabbath. There are six days to work
- 19:23. And why on the Sabbath do you come to
- 19:26be healed? Why? And Jesus says,
- 19:30hypocrites, any one of you unties his
- 19:33ox or his donkey. And it is no
- 19:37coincidence that Jesus chooses the ox
- 19:40and the donkey as examples, because the
- 19:43ox and the donkey had already been in
- 19:46the manger adoring the Savior. But
- 19:52these hypocrites, Pharisees, and
- 19:54synagogue leaders wanted to remain bent
- 19:57over, and it bothered them that Jesus
- 20:00was bringing liberation, health, and
- 20:02freedom. to other people. Dear brother,
- 20:10dear sister, many will be filled with
- 20:12envy because you are beginning to heal,
- 20:14to be set free, and to emerge from the
- 20:16abyss. Many who remain in the abyss and
- 20:20in darkness will want to discourage you
- 20:23, but pay them no mind, because the
- 20:25Lord is fighting the battle for you
- 20:27today. Because the Lord gives you the
- 20:31wisdom and the understanding today so
- 20:32that you may be free. So that you may
- 20:37begin to heal, so that you may begin to
- 20:41live a new life in Christ Jesus, a life
- 20:44free from fornication, from selfishness
- 20:48, from sin, and from double-meaning
- 20:51words. A life in grace, a life worthy
- 20:58of God to praise and bless, for that
- 21:02woman had a sick spirit and was bent
- 21:05over, unable to look upward. Indeed,
- 21:11her soul was bent over because,
- 21:13inclined toward the things of the earth
- 21:15, she could not see the grace of heaven
- 21:17. Today the Lord points you toward
- 21:22heaven, frees you from your shackles
- 21:26and your idols, and gives you the
- 21:29opportunity to be free to, like Paul,
- 21:32consider all things of this world as
- 21:35trash in order to gain Christ. It is
- 21:40all of humanity that was bent over
- 21:42until touching the ground. But Jesus
- 21:46Christ, with his death on the cross and
- 21:49the preaching of the gospel, has given
- 21:51us freedom. It is not just one woman
- 21:55who has been freed from her infirmity
- 21:57and can now praise God. It is all of us
- 22:00. Whoever can believe this begins to
- 22:05live it from today on. Today they begin
- 22:09to enjoy it. Today they can receive the
- 22:15food, that bread which has come down
- 22:17from heaven and gives us new life. May
- 22:21the grace of the Lord be with you, dear
- 22:24brothers and sisters, and let us ask
- 22:26our God to bless our day. In the name
- 22:29of the Father, and of the Son, and of
- 22:31the Holy Spirit. Amen. A holy day in
- 22:35the Lord to everyone.
