- 0:00thank you
- 0:02and remember the SS marching through the
- 0:07street singing when Jewish blood drips
- 0:10from our knives then everything is going
- 0:12to get better
- 0:15the Germans really wanted to catch every
- 0:18Jew
- 0:21I was with my mother hiding in a little
- 0:24room and then our sister stormed in the
- 0:28next day we were taken this train we
- 0:31jumped down we saw we were on a platform
- 0:33and it was Auschwitz
- 0:35[Music]
- 0:40and the next command was men and women
- 0:43to different side
- 0:46it was the last time we were together as
- 0:49a family
- 0:50[Music]
- 0:53sometimes we woke up and the people next
- 0:57to us
- 0:59died in the sleep
- 1:02and nearly gave up
- 1:08but you know I was stubborn I didn't
- 1:10want to die I wanted to experience life
- 1:15and one day when the Russians were
- 1:18coming the Germans had fled taking most
- 1:21of the inmates with them
- 1:24Miracles that we didn't go
- 1:27after the war I was very angry with the
- 1:30whole world
- 1:32people could have helped
- 1:37we still do terrible things
- 1:42but we have hope that things will get
- 1:45different I've got a good tip for
- 1:49president Trump that if he wants to make
- 1:52America big again he has to get people
- 1:55educated
- 1:59we have to learn from history
- 2:09say that the human race is doomed
- 2:12that we have lost touch with our true
- 2:14nature
- 2:16that the media has corrupted us and that
- 2:20the planet has no future
- 2:23I disagree I believe that humanity is
- 2:27full of Hope
- 2:29and that our salvation
- 2:31lies within each one of us
- 2:35my name is Brian Rose and my job is to
- 2:39listen the oldest method of learning
- 2:41known to known to man
- 2:44each week I seek out individuals that
- 2:47are changing the world
- 2:49people who are living and thinking in a
- 2:52different way
- 2:53their stories will challenge your
- 2:55beliefs
- 2:56make you question your choices and
- 2:59perhaps inspire you to change I never
- 3:03planned on doing any of this but now I
- 3:07can't stop
- 3:10join me on this Mission
- 3:13and make Humanity
- 3:15something we can all be proud of
- 3:21it's time for you to man up to once and
- 3:24for all
- 3:25tell your mind who the [ __ ] this was I
- 3:28need a [ __ ] answer What's it gonna be
- 3:34I don't know what it is about this
- 3:36[ __ ] sport but it attracts people
- 3:38that really need to do deep work on
- 3:40themselves
- 3:43I failed in the city
- 3:46all these bad memories
- 3:48I never really felt like I gave a [ __ ]
- 3:50about me or my life
- 3:53I almost killed myself like
- 3:57think about something that is going to
- 3:59drive you when it really hurts some kind
- 4:01of demon you want to fight
- 4:05I'm just not pushy man this is Iron Man
- 4:08Under Pressure reveals true character
- 4:11what are you gonna do
- 4:13going to be in Chattanooga May 20th or
- 4:16what
- 4:22avishlos is extremely unique because she
- 4:24is one of the few remaining Holocaust
- 4:27Survivors she's also the stepsister of
- 4:30Anne Frank which you know from The Diary
- 4:32of Anne Frank the story of a young girl
- 4:34in hiding in Amsterdam during the Nazi
- 4:38occupation and I'm so glad I had this
- 4:41conversation with Ava because it's easy
- 4:43to forget what happens when you don't
- 4:45have it told with someone who was there
- 4:47and Ava has a harrowing story she grew
- 4:50up in Austria and everything was okay
- 4:52and she slowly watched the Nazi party
- 4:54come into power she went into hiding
- 4:56when she was in Holland and then on her
- 4:5915th birthday she was snatched out of
- 5:00her house and shipped to Auschwitz where
- 5:03she had a year in captivity fearing for
- 5:07her life every single day she was
- 5:09separated from her mother and her father
- 5:10and her brother
- 5:12but then she was liberated by the
- 5:13Russians and made it out
- 5:15to me when she described it it sounds
- 5:17like the most incredible year anyone
- 5:19could have in their life full of Despair
- 5:22and Terror and Trauma she met the Doctor
- 5:26Joseph Mengele she thought she was going
- 5:30to die almost every single day and it
- 5:32was a really sobering tale and when I
- 5:33went home at night
- 5:34and I tried to tell this story to my
- 5:36daughter it was very difficult and so um
- 5:40this story is worth listening to so I
- 5:43just want to thank Ava for spending the
- 5:45time and going through all this detail I
- 5:47think telling the story takes a lot out
- 5:48of her but we cannot forget that this
- 5:50happened
- 5:52so recently in our history and we must
- 5:54do everything we can to make sure it
- 5:56never happens again so I hope you enjoy
- 5:58this conversation with Ava

- 7:02this is London reel I am Brian Rose my
- 7:05guest today is Ava Schloss the Holocaust
- 7:07Survivor educator and peace activist in
- 7:101944 your family was captured by the
- 7:12Nazis and transported to the Auschwitz
- 7:14birkenau concentration camp where you
- 7:16and your mother survived until you were
- 7:17freed in 1945. you're also the
- 7:20stepsister of Anne Frank whose book The
- 7:22Diary of Anne Frank has been published
- 7:23in over 60 languages and tells the story
- 7:25of a 13 year old girl hiding in
- 7:27Amsterdam from the Nazis in 2012 you
- 7:30were awarded the MBE and you have
- 7:32written three detailed books about your
- 7:34experiences Ava welcome to londonreal
- 7:36it's a pleasure
- 7:39it's great having you here we were just
- 7:41talking about London and how much it
- 7:43changed uh when did you move to this
- 7:46city I moved for one year in 1952 from
- 7:51Amsterdam I was going to be a
- 7:53photographer
- 7:54and uh Otto Frank who was my
- 7:59house friend with my mother at the time
- 8:01if they were not married yet they were
- 8:03just very friendly and he helped me a
- 8:05lot because I was very very very
- 8:07miserable and so after school I didn't
- 8:11really know what to do with my life
- 8:14and I didn't really care and Otto and my
- 8:18mother decided I should become a
- 8:19photographer
- 8:21and it was you know okay why not you
- 8:24know and Otto gave me his Leica because
- 8:28he used to take a lot of very nice
- 8:30pictures of his family and children but
- 8:33he said I have no family anymore so I'm
- 8:36never going to take any more photos so
- 8:39he gave me this very good camera and
- 8:42said I hope you'll become a successful
- 8:44photographer and he found me a place in
- 8:47London where I became an apprentice in
- 8:50Woburn place
- 8:52and so I moved to London for a year and
- 8:57another friend who had known from
- 9:00Amsterdam who had moved to London found
- 9:03me a little lodging in cricket Woods
- 9:06and that was a Czech lady who ran a
- 9:09little boarding house
- 9:11and there were about six seven people
- 9:13and there was a young man from Israel
- 9:16who had studied economics
- 9:19and we became friends
- 9:21and later became my husband
- 9:24and then we decided to stay here but my
- 9:29intention was really just a year to come
- 9:31here okay probably good for you to get
- 9:34out of Europe and come to a new place
- 9:37Etc also said we'll do you go to see
- 9:40something different but at that time I
- 9:43was actually quite shocked about London
- 9:45first of all in 52 that was still full
- 9:50of bomb sites
- 9:52um really big holes and very neglected
- 9:55and in Holland I mean we were not well
- 9:58off but we had a little apartment with
- 10:01Central Heating and and double glazing
- 10:04and so and here we had just uh open
- 10:07fires and um we had a when you had the
- 10:12bus because there was um
- 10:14other people so we had to share a
- 10:17bathroom because we had to put a penny
- 10:20in to get hot water
- 10:22and an outside toilet you know which we
- 10:26had never ever experienced even Austria
- 10:29where I was born in Vienna in the 30s we
- 10:33had all these facilities and we always
- 10:36told that England said is a advanced
- 10:39country with all the Innovations and the
- 10:42modern and
- 10:43fashionable and then when I came to
- 10:45London I was really shocked and no food
- 10:48really you know just
- 10:50buns and cup of tea and a bit of salad
- 10:54and a few and and in 52 there was still
- 10:57food rationing which we didn't have
- 11:00anymore on Holland and certainly not in
- 11:02Germany wow so it was really a culture
- 11:05shock very poor food rationing dirty you
- 11:09talked about the smog
- 11:11uh the fog yeah the bad air yeah it was
- 11:15really amazing amazing and we thought
- 11:18this is a advanced modern country wow
- 11:21and the auto who gave you the camera
- 11:24that was your stepfather not that set
- 11:27time okay but um so I became very
- 11:30friendly with this Israeli boy and after
- 11:33six months he said Eva for little love
- 11:37is you
- 11:38um let's get married and when I finished
- 11:40my studies we can start a new life go to
- 11:43Israel and I said no thank you
- 11:46because I have a vetoed mother in
- 11:49Amsterdam and you can imagine we were
- 11:51very very very close and I couldn't
- 11:54imagine I would just desert hair
- 11:58so at Otto Frank came very often to
- 12:01London keep an eye on me you know
- 12:03already he realized and needed a bit of
- 12:06guidance
- 12:07and I told him that this young man has
- 12:10asked me to marry him but of course I'm
- 12:12not
- 12:13and he got a bit embarrassed and he said
- 12:16well then you get settled
- 12:19miyamas and me have fallen in love as
- 12:22well and we'd like to get married
- 12:24so I went back to this young man and
- 12:26said we can marry now which we did we
- 12:30went to Amsterdam and we got married
- 12:31there and Otto and my mother got married
- 12:35a year later wow and so that's where I
- 12:37became my stepfather and so Otto Frank
- 12:39was the father of Anne Francis who
- 12:42survived her in the war he was the only
- 12:44one who survived the family his two
- 12:47girls and his wife died his wife in
- 12:50Auschwitz and the two girls in back at
- 12:53Bells and wow which was the
- 12:57Auschwitz where ever stayed
- 13:00um was liberated in January by the
- 13:03Russians but back in the Belgian was
- 13:06liberated in 1944
- 13:09no 45 in in April 45
- 13:14by the British
- 13:17and she
- 13:18must have died a little bit before the
- 13:21elevation right okay and I want to talk
- 13:24later about how Otto you know was with
- 13:27you after after the war yeah I was
- 13:29wondering if we could start about where
- 13:32you were born in Vienna in 1929
- 13:36in a very wonderful family with
- 13:41um aunts and uncles and grandparents and
- 13:44an older brother
- 13:46and my father had inherited The Shoe
- 13:50Factory from his father
- 13:52and he was a very very good businessman
- 13:55and so we were we were not rich but we
- 13:58were comfortable
- 13:59and he was one of the he was a daredevil
- 14:03very sporty and he was one of the first
- 14:06people in the 30s to buy a car
- 14:10and we did excursed into the mountains
- 14:14and um he he and me ever since about
- 14:18this sporty by brother he was more later
- 14:22on we realized he was very artistic and
- 14:26more gentle but I was really as a tomboy
- 14:29in the family so I went over this with
- 14:32my father mountaineering and things like
- 14:34that and my mother and brother I went
- 14:37with us but she never went on daring
- 14:40things she just watched somewhere in a
- 14:42cafe where the till we came down did you
- 14:45drive the car as well I did my father
- 14:48drove very well and you know going up
- 14:50mountains those beds and my muscles just
- 14:53sat screaming you know the roads were
- 14:55not that good at the time and it was
- 14:58actually quite dangerous but anyway my
- 15:01father loved all that and so did I
- 15:06foreign
- 15:07[Music]
- 15:40thank you
