- 0:14boomers and it makes me cringe

- 0:21better
- 0:21is that really better though look it's
- 0:24so nice and
- 0:25then block print no it's not lovely
- 0:29no that's why i'm very consistent if you
- 0:31can't tell with all my caps
- 0:33yeah you and michael are little virgo
- 0:35weirdos you guys do
- 0:36have to be consistent abby block letters

- 0:40legible it is easy to read and it's big
- 0:44and it's clean and it's all the same no
- 0:47i agree it's very good for what you've
- 0:48done here that looks great

- 1:02[Music]
- 1:10hey guys hey guys welcome welcome i'm
- 1:13abby and i'm shawna
- 1:14this is anxious and afraid the podcast
- 1:18where we yell at each other about
- 1:20cursive and block letters
- 1:21we also talk about ghosts and yes or
- 1:24true crime or the consistency of all
- 1:27caps is needed
- 1:29yeah we have we disagree on some things
- 1:32i guess
- 1:36it's okay i still love you yeah thanks i
- 1:37love you too um
- 1:39hey welcome um welcome to our show
- 1:42here we are yeah and we talk about how
- 1:45we're anxious and all that jazz so join
- 1:47us in those feelings
- 1:49and abby yes tell us about your feelings
- 1:51of feeling anxious
- 1:52okay just playing off what we were
- 1:54arguing about earlier it's because we
- 1:56were talking about
- 1:57this new word this new term yeah i told
- 2:00you about it
- 2:00yeah that shauna told me about last
- 2:02night that i'd never heard of before
- 2:04it's a new thing apparently and it's the
- 2:07word
- 2:08chugi which sounds disgusting i hate it
- 2:10so much it's the most disgusting word
- 2:12i've ever heard before in my life yeah
- 2:14and to know that somebody made it up
- 2:16makes me extra angry because you could
- 2:18have
- 2:19gone with any word and you went with a
- 2:20terrible one a terrible sounding word
- 2:22and it basically means and i think it's
- 2:23because it triggers me yeah i'm also
- 2:25very offended
- 2:26by it because it's like another lineage
- 2:29yes
- 2:30attacking outdated millennials because
- 2:32now we're old apparently
- 2:33yeah and they're targeting us for our
- 2:36skinny jeans
- 2:37and our side parts and the emoji face
- 2:40and
- 2:40the crying face now we're so basic that
- 2:42we're chookies or something like that
- 2:44ew i just hate that word so much that's
- 2:46what i learned on late night
- 2:48i literally had to google it you guys
- 2:49there was a new york times article about
- 2:51the word chugi i was like what is this
- 2:53world coming to you it's so
- 2:54disappointing
- 2:56so that made me anxious and it stressed
- 2:59me out because
- 3:00i don't want to be called a chugi by a
- 3:0216 year old no like
- 3:03come on we don't hit on you that hard so
- 3:05like just don't make fun of us anymore
- 3:07okay like we get it from both ends
- 3:09same team right yeah why are you
- 3:11attacking us we're supporting you
- 3:13we're like change the world and they're
- 3:15like thanks for [ __ ] it up more
- 3:17i know i'm like no that was our parents
- 3:19we're just stuck in the middle
- 3:23so yeah i feel triggered by that word um
- 3:27and i'm upset that i have to google new
- 3:29words now like an old person
- 3:31yeah and i hate that it's also like semi
- 3:33true because it's like i do have to keep
- 3:35up on the new lingo
- 3:37like we're old but we're young at the
- 3:39same time and i just don't like it
- 3:40it's a very weird place it's weird limbo
- 3:43place to be in and then when i start
- 3:44going off about like
- 3:45well you don't know how to cursive i'm
- 3:47like i'm an old person
- 3:50and that doesn't feel good no so i'm
- 3:53sure
- 3:53our listeners can relate they're all
- 3:55probably roughly our age
- 3:56i know i mean we're older than google
- 3:58how disgusting you i hate when you say
- 4:00that
- 4:01the worst thing to realize is true so
- 4:04disgusting i want to think about it
- 4:07well what made you anxious or afraid
- 4:09this week uh
- 4:10well there's all of that like every day
- 4:12yes um but
- 4:14um today i'm actually having to
- 4:18drive by myself to the airport to pick
- 4:20up my husband
- 4:21yeah and just driving by myself a long
- 4:24distance is a little scary
- 4:26yeah it's a couple hours it's been a
- 4:27while since i've done it so
- 4:29we'll see how it goes see if i don't get
- 4:31lost hopefully big city
- 4:32international airport it's a big airport
- 4:36yeah we were talking i drove there once
- 4:38and it was pretty stressful if you
- 4:40if you haven't like done it before or
- 4:42been there before yeah
- 4:43a lot of people so wish me luck on that
- 4:46i wish you
- 4:46the best of luck thank you i bet your
- 4:48gps godspeed
- 4:50thank you godspeed i bet your gps will
- 4:52help you out
- 4:53yeah yeah hopefully she'll be accurate
- 4:56yeah
- 4:57cool i bet you nail it on the first try
- 4:59i hope so
- 5:00at least it'll still be light out yes
- 5:02that's what i'm like
- 5:03thankful for i don't know how every year
- 5:05it blows my mind that it's still light
- 5:06out at like 8 30 and like wow
- 5:09every single year we go through such a
- 5:11dark depressing winter
- 5:13yeah of short days where we're just like
- 5:15oh my gosh
- 5:16light until 8 pm yeah like am i ever
- 5:19gonna not be amazed by this
- 5:21no it goes as far as like 9 30 in the
- 5:24mid-summer
- 5:25yeah it's crazy long days i love it
- 5:27mm-hmm
- 5:29oh i had one tiny correction from last
- 5:30week oh yeah it's really bothering you
- 5:33so when i was talking about learners in
- 5:35the tank i said that he had
- 5:37blonde hair and blue eyes and he
- 5:38actually has brown eyes
- 5:41i say i apologize you're a halfway one
- 5:44you had
- 5:44brown eyes and i know that our listeners
- 5:47can't see it but on the board
- 5:48it's spelled with one tea but i believe
- 5:51i know i spelled it wrong
- 5:52and it's in lower case so come on get
- 5:54your [ __ ] just failing guys
- 5:56even see what i have to put up with like
- 5:59hey it's been a while since me and
- 6:00michael teamed up and were like
- 6:01[ __ ] caps man that's the hill you
- 6:05guys are going to die on
- 6:06we agree i'm not sure organization is
- 6:10key
- 6:10i complimented your block letters i'll
- 6:13take it back
- 6:15it was a two-sided compliment or
- 6:16whatever those are called oh underhanded
- 6:18copper
- 6:20i like that oh that's a brita i'm pretty
- 6:22sure that's a bretta from
- 6:24community i love that no i would i
- 6:27wasn't sarcastic i really do like her
- 6:29it's really great for what you've got
- 6:30going on there i said for what you've
- 6:32done there
- 6:33for what you were trying to do it worked
- 6:34for what you did i liked it
- 6:36i was a compliment i see what you were
- 6:39going for
- 6:40michael he's trying to pit us against
- 6:42each other i'm having fun
- 6:44yeah he's in his like new chair it's
- 6:46like a big a large
- 6:48chair he's got a cat in his lap that
- 6:50he's stroking we're doing a morning
- 6:52record so i've got a different energy
- 6:53than normal
- 6:54oh that's true i stayed the night yeah
- 6:56we had a slumber party yeah yeah cause
- 6:58like chad's out of town why would i want
- 7:00to be by myself so
- 7:01we had me over adult summer party it was
- 7:04so fun
- 7:05we it's like our kind of party where we
- 7:06ate a lot of food we did
- 7:08unshamelessly shame yeah we shamelessly
- 7:11ate
- 7:12a lot of food and i had all that candy
- 7:14and uncheap
- 7:16i'm so stupid i was ashamed um and then
- 7:19we watched two documentaries
- 7:21oh my gosh we were so excited we were
- 7:24like oh my gosh
- 7:25friday night we're getting lit with like
- 7:28talks about
- 7:29whales and the titanic ship and i
- 7:32changed the lights in the room so that
- 7:33they were
- 7:34nautical like blue yeah from the vibe we
- 7:37were like totally vibing it what a nerd
- 7:38we're such
- 7:39nerd god damn it but we were so into it
- 7:42michael came in i think he thought we
- 7:44were drunk but we weren't we were just
- 7:45having a lot of fun
- 7:46yeah we're loud we were eating candy it
- 7:48was like the best time like sitting on
- 7:50your bed eating candy and watching
- 7:51whales
- 7:51sugar high we had a sugar high for sure
- 7:54because my mom got me that like
- 7:56nostalgia box of like all the 90s candy
- 7:58and it's
- 7:59it's just pure sugar yeah there's like
- 8:01no chocolate in it it's just like
- 8:03all the sugar sour candy sugar candy
- 8:05gummy candy
- 8:06yeah like uh sour patch kids and
- 8:09skittles
- 8:10but i also yeah that's also my jam so i
- 8:11helped her out with that she did
- 8:13there's a lot of stuff i wasn't going to
- 8:14eat so thank you for that
- 8:17okay all right okay back to biz abby
- 8:21i'm in it you are here you're wearing a
- 8:23brace but you are
- 8:24giving us an episode yes i am i actually
- 8:27finished it early this week which
- 8:29was kind of amazing so proud of you
- 8:30because i was like oh no are you going
- 8:31to be able to finish it if i'm going to
- 8:33be there distracting you
- 8:34i know it's like i guess you can come
- 8:35over and i'll ignore you because i'm so
- 8:38last minute doing it like a half hour
- 8:39before i come over
- 8:40yeah so i got it done early so we could
- 8:42hang um but yeah
- 8:44this is my first episode back i'm like
- 8:47am i nervous
- 8:48are you you must be i was i'm always
- 8:50nervous i know it's so weird and it's
- 8:52like
- 8:53why why am i this way okay this is
- 8:55episode 68
- 8:57okay yay isn't that crazy
- 9:00yeah ew and that'll almost be 75 and
- 9:03that's almost
- 9:04200. that's how numbers work yep
- 9:08all right all right let's do this thing
- 9:10okay so for my first episode back
- 9:12i thought wouldn't it be nice to
- 9:14traumatize everyone again with a
- 9:15harrowing survival story of course
- 9:18of course yes of course it would for the
- 9:21record i'm shaking my head no
- 9:23do you know what she's doing no oh okay
- 9:26i mean i should because she said a lot
- 9:27about it to me in the last week but
- 9:29i was like actually i talked to you
- 9:30about it several times so i'm surprised
- 9:34i want it to be a surprise
- 9:35[Laughter]
- 9:38i actively ignore everything you say
- 9:41sounds good uh-huh
- 9:43wow okay so while researching the story
- 9:48i found that the main character of our
- 9:49story today had a very
- 9:51interesting takeaway from their
- 9:52experience and
- 9:54i think it differs from a lot of the
- 9:56other stories that we've
- 9:57um done with like similar circumstances
- 10:00okay
- 10:01so today a little different i just gotta
- 10:04mix it up you know you gotta keep it
- 10:05fresh keep
- 10:06coming back for more so today
- 10:10i will be telling you the rather obscure
- 10:12survival story
- 10:13of annette herfkins who was the sole
- 10:16survivor
- 10:17of the vietnam airlines flight 474
- 10:21plane crash in the vietnam jungle
- 10:24oh my god the jungle now i remember what
- 10:27story you're doing
- 10:28yeah like how could you forget this is
- 10:31like a very
- 10:32memorable yeah that's pretty specific
- 10:34yeah oh my gosh but crazy a soul
- 10:36survivor
- 10:37plane crash story again yes but then
- 10:39also jungle
- 10:40in the jungle oh my god girl let's hear
- 10:43all about it
- 10:44ready for this okay i mean it's already
- 10:46intense just like based on the category
- 10:48alone
- 10:49right um but first you know i got to
- 10:52recognize my main source
- 10:53for our story today which was a book
- 10:56written by annette herfkins herself
- 10:59so you can't get much better than that
- 11:02and the book is called turbulence a true
- 11:04story
- 11:04of survival and i will say that it was
- 11:08um it's a fascinating read and it was
- 11:10really hard to put down
- 11:11but it's also not organized in a way
- 11:13that is convenient for research
- 11:15um she kind of weaves her life before
- 11:18and after the accident into chapters
- 11:20between
- 11:20small windows of description of her time
- 11:23directly after the plane crash
- 11:25so it's like it's kind of like you're
- 11:27constantly getting like
- 11:29before the crash and like all these
- 11:30different perspectives yeah
- 11:32um so i did see reviews saying that the
- 11:34organization was jarring
- 11:36and they also didn't feel like she wrote
- 11:37enough about the accident but
- 11:39i really like the book um you really get
- 11:41to know annette and all the hurdles she
- 11:42went through after the accident as well
- 11:44as
- 11:45chapters from her friends and family's
- 11:46perspective so i just thought it was
- 11:48really good
- 11:49all right i feel like i should have like
- 11:50a rating system for books like
- 11:53a wood read scale you know like a borf
- 11:55short but like for books
- 11:57yeah that'd only be you though because i
- 11:59don't read books
- 12:00yeah i don't know what i would call it
- 12:02though but something clever
- 12:04hmm you guys email us your ideas anxious
- 12:07and afraid
- 12:08gmail.com um okay
- 12:11so as i said before it's a more obscure
- 12:14case
- 12:14uh almost no other podcasts have covered
- 12:17this
- 12:18um that i could find i think only two
- 12:21wow okay
- 12:22like look at you yeah i know it's like
- 12:24obscure
- 12:25um and i'm so kind of like nervous to
- 12:28tell our story but i'm excited no it's
- 12:29gonna be great
- 12:30all right okay so as i said before our
- 12:33story
- 12:34centers around a woman named annette
- 12:36herfkins
- 12:37and let's talk about her for a minute
- 12:39because i know you're gonna love her
- 12:40she's so cool and she's like really
- 12:42world traveled
- 12:44um so on april 29th 1961
- 12:48annette herfkins was born in venezuela
- 12:50to a dutch family
- 12:52she's tall and thin and she's beautiful
- 12:55and she's blonde
- 12:56and she's you know blue-eyed dutch
- 13:00and she seemed like she exceeded at most
- 13:02things i feel like i always tell stories
- 13:03about women who are just good at
- 13:04everything
- 13:05well because women are good yeah i'm
- 13:07just like everyone's so cool
- 13:10she was athletic as well as intelligent
- 13:12and had a rather privileged
- 13:14and charmed childhood from the way she
- 13:16described it nice
- 13:18after high school annette attended
- 13:20leiden
- 13:21university in the netherlands where she
- 13:23studied law
- 13:24with an emphasis on economics the
- 13:27netherlands too that's cool
- 13:29yeah she's smart um she lived in the
- 13:31only co-ed
- 13:32sorority house on campus where she would
- 13:35eventually meet
- 13:36willem vanderpaw who everyone called
- 13:39poche or poshjay
- 13:41parshe i was trying to listen to the way
- 13:43that she pronounced it but she has an
- 13:45accent
- 13:47but it's spelled p-a-s-j-e crochet
- 13:50poche does he sashay away he sasha's
- 13:53position
- 13:56but she put an r in it when she
- 13:57pronounced it but i wasn't sure if
- 13:58that's just because of her accent or not
- 14:00so she kind of pronounced it like
- 14:01parshay but poche
- 14:04um so he also studied law and he lived
- 14:07in the co-ed
- 14:07sorority house and after medianet the
- 14:10two became
- 14:11very good friends pasha looked different
- 14:14from the other dutch boys at the
- 14:15university
- 14:16who are mostly you know tall and thin
- 14:18blonde hair blue eye just like a net
- 14:20sure um but pasha was more stocky with
- 14:23brown hair and brown eyes
- 14:24and annette found him to be more kind
- 14:27and mature than most of the other guys
- 14:28she was used to
- 14:29okay so soon the pair became best
- 14:31friends and
- 14:33as they spent more and more time
- 14:34together they started to catch fields
- 14:37friends with benny's yeah a little bit
- 14:39of bennies
- 14:40which was a prohibited in their sorority
- 14:43of course it was fabulous yeah they had
- 14:44to keep their love a secret
- 14:46it's so fun um annette would later say
- 14:50that he was not only her first love but
- 14:52the love of her life
- 14:53and her soul mate she's very sweet
- 14:57the couple vacation together in paris
- 14:59and long to travel more together and see
- 15:01the world
- 15:02same i think it's easier when you're in
- 15:05europe to travel
- 15:06yeah different cool places it doesn't
- 15:08take as long to
- 15:10visit all the countries and i don't
- 15:11cross an ocean damn it
- 15:13no they both spent some time in south
- 15:15america as part of their studies and
- 15:17after graduation they moved to amsterdam
- 15:19and eventually began working for ing
- 15:22bank
- 15:23okay uh poche who was four years older
- 15:26than annette
- 15:27had relatively no issues with fitting
- 15:29into the banking world in the 1980s
- 15:31but for a net it was more of a struggle
- 15:34uh she was entering a male dominated
- 15:36field
- 15:37and knew the cards were stacked against
- 15:39her always but
- 15:40she kicked ass anyway of course she's a
- 15:42badass she is
- 15:44annette became the first female
- 15:46executive trainee
- 15:47at ing bank and faced a lot of shade
- 15:50from her male colleagues
- 15:51and was told by the department head of
- 15:53the credit analysis department
- 15:55that he had little hopes of getting a
- 15:57woman to analyze anything at all
- 15:59oh no no what a dick
- 16:03wow i can't believe you just say that to
- 16:07someone's face it seems so
- 16:10like old but we're still dealing with it
- 16:13i know and realizing that becoming an
- 16:16adult was like
- 16:17jarring for me because i was like oh no
- 16:19we're more woke
- 16:20obviously yeah cause it's but no
- 16:23no maybe they won't say it as openly
- 16:25like they did then but it's still the
- 16:27same
- 16:27people yeah same idea still not
- 16:30equality pay double pay equality pay
- 16:34i'm gonna quality pay i'm saying words
- 16:35all wrong
- 16:37what's new it's the morning i know we're
- 16:40tired
- 16:41uh okay so but annette proved them wrong
- 16:44once again
- 16:44and not only survived the executive
- 16:46trainee program but scored the most
- 16:48coveted posting in new york city
- 16:51becoming the first female executive
- 16:52trainee to be sent abroad by a dutch
- 16:54bank
- 16:55nice boss [ __ ] after a year in new york
- 16:59in 1989 annette was promoted and
- 17:02relocated to london uh she would find
- 17:05out that her promotion was due
- 17:06to the death of an ldc trader in london
- 17:09who had tragically died in a plane crash
- 17:12oh no a little creepy foreshadowing
- 17:14there oh no
- 17:16meanwhile or her boyfriend poche was
- 17:18relocating
- 17:19to chile on a two-year assignment with
- 17:21ing bank
- 17:22these two just travel so much into like
- 17:25all of these cool [ __ ] places i'm
- 17:27just so jealous
- 17:28um one of the things that amazes me
- 17:30about annette and poche was their
- 17:32ability to successfully navigate a long
- 17:35distance relationship long term sounds
- 17:38like it yeah they're like not in the
- 17:39same place as most of the time
- 17:42and they've already been together for
- 17:43years at this point and they are still
- 17:44very much in love
- 17:46oh and they don't have like the same
- 17:47technology back in those days to really
- 17:49make it easier they just like talked on
- 17:51the phone a lot yeah
- 17:53um and they were both like fiercely
- 17:54independent and
- 17:56intelligent and wanted to focus on their
- 17:57careers um so that they could eventually
- 18:00settle down
- 18:01um pasha was always threatening to
- 18:04propose to annette
- 18:05i'm gonna marry you yeah and she would
- 18:08jokingly turn him down and say don't you
- 18:09dare we are in this together and we will
- 18:11for sure eventually oh that's cute
- 18:15yeah that was pretty cute and well for
- 18:17them like they knew they were a done
- 18:19deal so
- 18:20yeah putting off the engagement like
- 18:21wasn't you know the end of the world
- 18:23yeah they thought that they always had
- 18:24more time
- 18:25sure uh the pair would fly to each other
- 18:28to visit
- 18:29um and thanks to their well-paying jobs
- 18:30they could afford it yeah
- 18:32jealous and sometimes their bank would
- 18:34pay for it too it's like oh that'd be
- 18:36cool
- 18:36how did they do that back in those days
- 18:38i don't know i think if you're like a
- 18:40rich
- 18:41executive they're just like sure true
- 18:43that uh
- 18:44by now annette herfkins was doing very
- 18:47well for herself she was making big
- 18:48contacts in the international trading
- 18:50world
- 18:51um which is just so over my head to
- 18:54write about i was like trying to
- 18:55understand all the [ __ ] she's talking
- 18:57about and like i don't understand
- 18:58trading
- 19:00million dollar deals no way stocks bonds
- 19:02like don't talk to me about it
- 19:04um she met a man named jamie lupa
- 19:07through work who was one of the top
- 19:09traders for citibank out of new york
- 19:12he would call her every morning to ask
- 19:13about the european markets
- 19:15and soon the pair became friends so he
- 19:18travels to london
- 19:20to meet his business affiliates which
- 19:22included annette
- 19:23and she describes her shock after seeing
- 19:25him for the first time because
- 19:27he did not look like a big time new york
- 19:30trader
- 19:31he was older than her and he had long
- 19:34bushy dark hair
- 19:35oh no and a very impressive mustache
- 19:37think like
- 19:38burt reynolds oh no with a pharah faucet
- 19:41hairdo but
- 19:42like a suit and tie i can't handle it
- 19:47it's not hot just imagine the look like
- 19:50shoulder length
- 19:51feathered bushy brown hair and like this
- 19:54mustache that like goes halfway across
- 19:56his cheeks and down
- 19:58no i hate it so much and he told her she
- 20:01didn't look
- 20:02how he pictured her either he thought
- 20:04she was going to be a short and thick
- 20:06brunette
- 20:09okay i know i was like rude but instead
- 20:12he gets this like
- 20:13like gorgeous blonde tall
- 20:16model lady with a cute blonde bob cut
- 20:20um she kind of weirdly looked like the
- 20:23lady from the other plane crashed i was
- 20:25gonna say it kind of
- 20:26describes the other similar look so yeah
- 20:28because she was also like
- 20:29hottie yeah she's hot she's blonde yeah
- 20:31she has the short hair too
- 20:32she did yeah so like that's kind of
- 20:34weird um
- 20:36but yeah so the two hit it off after
- 20:38their initial shock and seeing what the
- 20:39other person actually looked like yeah
- 20:41it's like this is back in the early 90s
- 20:4380s so they're only seeing each other
- 20:44you know through the phone yeah and once
- 20:46you have it like in your head matching
- 20:48that voice it's hard to like
- 20:49change it right yeah it's so weird um
- 20:53so they hit it off they become friends
- 20:55um he goes back to new york
- 20:57and then he calls annette and surprises
- 20:59her with a job offer
- 21:00oh so the pair become trading partners
- 21:04at santander bank in madrid and we're
- 21:07tasked with making the relatively new
- 21:09bank one of the top ten in the emerging
- 21:11markets
- 21:12the places they get to go to are so
- 21:14crazy like coachella madrid
- 21:16she just gets to go live in madrid um so
- 21:19this was another big step up for annette
- 21:21because
- 21:21now she's a big time trader um so you
- 21:24queue up like the
- 21:25early 90s montage of wall street office
- 21:27life i can picture the big clothes the
- 21:29shoulder pads
- 21:30yes fax machines
- 21:33yes phones with cords remember ringing
- 21:36off the hook
- 21:37there's probably like cocaine involved
- 21:39everywhere
- 21:41yeah schmoozy parties you get it um
- 21:44so annette and jamie are on the phones
- 21:46constantly from 10 a.m
- 21:48to 11 p.m is their work day
- 21:51making deals and monitoring the markets
- 21:52in london and new york i just can't
- 21:54picture that life like it just can't
- 21:55intense
- 21:56uh there's a picture of the two of them
- 21:58and their computers are like right next
- 21:59to each other and they both have two
- 22:01corded phones held to each ear
- 22:04with like these concentrated looks on
- 22:06their face like they're each holding two
- 22:08phones oh my god no
- 22:09yeah uh but the pair become very
- 22:11successful
- 22:12they're making millions of dollars um
- 22:15well deals i'm not sure if they made
- 22:16millions of dollars i'm sure they made a
- 22:18lot of money
- 22:19um and they do they get their bank um
- 22:22into the top five in the emerging
- 22:23markets wow
- 22:24so they're doing a great job and pachi
- 22:26was still doing his thing in chile and
- 22:28he and annette would talk on the phone
- 22:29twice a day
- 22:30to fill each other in on their days uh
- 22:33they missed each other obviously
- 22:35and decided that poshjay was done with
- 22:37his or when he was done with his
- 22:38two-year assignment
- 22:40they were going to make a real effort to
- 22:41be stationed in the same place
- 22:43yeah hello but plans changed once again
- 22:47when apostate called annette to tell her
- 22:50he had been offered an amazing job in
- 22:52vietnam
- 22:53ing bank had tasked him with opening up
- 22:56two new branches in vietnam
- 22:58which at the time um they called them
- 23:01like a virgin territory so it's not like
- 23:03super developed yet
- 23:04so they were working for the same bank
- 23:06company but like in different
- 23:07countries she ended up she was they were
- 23:11working for the same bank until she got
- 23:12that job offer from
- 23:14jamie i see okay but yeah so they were
- 23:17working for
- 23:17ing bank together for a while and poche
- 23:20stayed with them
- 23:21and now he's going to vietnam um so he
- 23:24has to
- 23:25like build two branches there from
- 23:26scratch um
- 23:28well not him personally
- 23:31he's probably got soft hands he said
- 23:34he'd already been
- 23:35or he'd always been interested in
- 23:36vietnam so and he was like super excited
- 23:38for the opportunity
- 23:40and if he did well he would possibly
- 23:41become the general manager
- 23:44so in 1992 poshj moved to
- 23:48ho chi minh city to begin work there on
- 23:50the
- 23:51two branches and annette and poshj began
- 23:54having struggles with their work not
- 23:57wanting to pay for the travel costs of
- 23:59the pair flying to see each other
- 24:00they were like well those privileges are
- 24:02reserved for married couples
- 24:04so oh okay even though they've been
- 24:06together at that point for like 13 years
- 24:09um it wasn't really something that they
- 24:11had an issue with in the past but
- 24:13it was one of the many reasons the
- 24:15couple was finally working towards
- 24:17like making a plan to get married yeah
- 24:20but every time they made plans to see
- 24:22each other life would get in the way and
- 24:23their plans kept getting pushed back
- 24:25further and further
- 24:26until it would be five months until they
- 24:28could see each other again
- 24:30which was the longest they had ever gone
- 24:32in the 13 years that they had been
- 24:33together
- 24:34oh that's sad yeah and they're in their
- 24:36their 30s now
- 24:38um during their time apart annette
- 24:39attended a friend's wedding and she was
- 24:41handed
- 24:41the bride's bouquet at the reception and
- 24:44everyone cheered for her knowing she was
- 24:45finally gonna go
- 24:46settle down so in november annette was
- 24:49flying to vietnam to visit her love and
- 24:51to celebrate the opening of the new ing
- 24:53bank
- 24:54he had been working so hard on posture
- 24:57had also
- 24:58made plans for them to visit a beautiful
- 25:00beach resort while she was there
- 25:02love it she flew into ho chi minh city
- 25:04on november 13th
- 25:06and the very next morning they were to
- 25:08take another flight
- 25:09over the vietnam jungle to the natrang
- 25:11airport to get to the resort located on
- 25:14vietnam's southern coast all right here
- 25:16we go
- 25:18just let me dab this prepared
- 25:23and it was not exactly jazz to be taking
- 25:26another flight while she was still so
- 25:27groggy and jet lagged
- 25:28yeah um but posh jay's uh he promised
- 25:31that the short flight would be worth it
- 25:34so the pair get up at 5am the next
- 25:37morning
- 25:38and make their way to the airport where
- 25:40annette sees the plane they're gonna be
- 25:42boarding and she stops dead in her
- 25:43tracks oh my god
- 25:44and she's like there's no way i'm
- 25:46getting on that
- 25:48so she's extremely claustrophobic and
- 25:50the plane that they were looking at was
- 25:52very small
- 25:54they're playing which is kind of funny
- 25:56because just this morning we were
- 25:57talking about
- 25:58like how funny i actually brought up
- 26:01this situ
- 26:02the topic of being in small planes
- 26:05this morning and here we are
- 26:08i had no idea what you were doing i know
- 26:10i was thinking about that i was like
- 26:11we're gonna be talking about this later
- 26:14oh we're so weird i knew
- 26:18so the plane um a flight 474
- 26:21it's a it's a 16 year old soviet maid
- 26:24i don't know how to say this yakulov
- 26:26yuck it's very so
- 26:28russian we believe you uh with it's only
- 26:31got a max
- 26:32a capacity of 32 passengers oh my gosh
- 26:35be small so apache knew this
- 26:38and had already prepared his arguments
- 26:42he's like no no no no he's like dragging
- 26:44her to this point
- 26:45oh he's dying to see her yes he's like
- 26:48if
- 26:48they if we don't take the plane we have
- 26:51to take a car
- 26:52and it will take days to get through the
- 26:54dense jungle
- 26:55and some of the roads might not even be
- 26:57passable and by the time we get there
- 26:58we're going to have to turn around and
- 26:59go back
- 27:00and so and then he's like and the flight
- 27:04is
- 27:04it's 20 minutes it's only 20 minutes
- 27:06okay so with a little more coaxing
- 27:08annette
- 27:09steals herself and she climbs the steps
- 27:11into the rear entrance of the plane
- 27:14once inside her head almost brushed the
- 27:16ceiling of the plane
- 27:17and she immediately began to panic
- 27:20turning around
- 27:21and running into posh day and she began
- 27:23to beat her
- 27:24her uh fists against his chest and she's
- 27:27like crying and she's oh my god she's
- 27:28always new
- 27:29yeah and he's like grabbing her by the
- 27:31arms and saying like you can do it like
- 27:33i know you can
- 27:34oh that's so hard he said you have to
- 27:36for me for us it's only 20 minutes
- 27:38so he was on the plane yeah
- 27:42so with that annette calmed down and
- 27:45turned around to find her seat it's a
- 27:48single isle plane
- 27:49and there's only 15 rows of seats and
- 27:51annette was seated in the
- 27:53uh sorry in the i'll see oh yeah sorry
- 27:56she's she's seated on the aisle in the
- 27:58third row and posh is right
- 28:00next to her her long legs were cramped
- 28:04with her knees touching the back of the
- 28:05seat in front of her
- 28:07and she could touch the ceiling seated
- 28:10without straightening her arm
- 28:12so it's like really small it sounds
- 28:14terrible yeah the flight attendant saw
- 28:16that annette was clearly struggling
- 28:18and didn't make her fasten her seat belt
- 28:20like everybody else
- 28:22including poche she said she couldn't
- 28:24handle being restrained on top of the
- 28:26severe claustrophobia she was already
- 28:28dealing with
- 28:29yeah after the rest of the flight checks
- 28:31were done flight 474 was ready for
- 28:33takeoff with 25 passengers and six crew
- 28:36members
- 28:37oh wow annette did her best to focus on
- 28:40literally anything but the time passing
- 28:42but after 20 minutes with no discernible
- 28:44changes in the flight path
- 28:46anna asked the flight attendant why they
- 28:48were not descending it
- 28:49the woman cheerfully answered that the
- 28:51flight was 55 minutes
- 28:53and they still had about a half hour
- 28:55left he's a liar
- 28:58at this point posie stopped making eye
- 29:01contact
- 29:02he's like oh snap here here we go and
- 29:04tried to disappear into his seat
- 29:06as and it probably turned around and
- 29:08cooked him with a death stare
- 29:10oh yeah and he guiltily told her it was
- 29:12the only way to get her on the plane
- 29:16which was probably true but did not help
- 29:18the anger and betrayal annette was
- 29:20feeling
- 29:21so many emotions and so little time i'm
- 29:23already stressed out i know
- 29:25so she seeds for another 29 minutes
- 29:28realizing they were almost there 49
- 29:31minutes
- 29:31out of 55. so close that's so
- 29:35sad but then the plane suddenly drops
- 29:39dramatically like your butt is in your
- 29:41stomach and your stomach is in your
- 29:42mouth like that
- 29:43like that like froggy ride where it just
- 29:45like drops straight down yeah
- 29:47no posh turns to a net and worriedly
- 29:50says
- 29:51this i don't like annette replies
- 29:56of course a shitty little toy plane like
- 29:57this drops it's just an air pocket like
- 30:01she's like i [ __ ] told all y'all
- 30:03she's so pissed like it's a shitty
- 30:04little plane of course it drops
- 30:06oh my gosh i would be that way too i'd
- 30:08be like i told you stupid [ __ ]
- 30:10this is terrifying i know she's like
- 30:11it's an air pocket like whatever
- 30:13but then she can see that like he's
- 30:15scared
- 30:16and then the plane drops again oh my god
- 30:19no and this time
- 30:20even further than before oh my god and
- 30:22everyone starts screaming you're killing
- 30:24me
- 30:25pasta and annette grab for each other's
- 30:27hands
- 30:28and squeeze tight as annette hears the
- 30:30roar of the engines
- 30:31accelerating and then her world goes
- 30:34black
- 30:36do you wanna take a little break
- 30:38[Music]
- 30:47and we're back hello hey um
- 30:50if you heard any dog whining in in the
- 30:53previous
- 30:54time we've been here it's roscoe yeah we
- 30:56got we got roscoe we got it from here
- 30:59roscoe's here today we tried this method
- 31:01of
- 31:02locking him out um he wasn't having it
- 31:04it was too sad
- 31:05yeah he was whining so now he's in here
- 31:07with us so you'll probably hear him
- 31:08chewing on things
- 31:10yeah so forgive roscoe and us but you'll
- 31:13love him he's so cute yeah it's okay
- 31:14because he's a dog yeah you just can't
- 31:16be man
- 31:17all right so when we left
- 31:21oh yeah back to this terrible thing we
- 31:23were in a scary part
- 31:24yeah they're holding hands that's what
- 31:26got me yes the engine
- 31:27she can hear the roar of the engines
- 31:30and they squeeze hands and then the
- 31:33world her world goes black
- 31:35what the passengers of flight 474 didn't
- 31:38know was that they were heading towards
- 31:40a tropical storm called forest
- 31:42like its name was foreign i was really
- 31:44confused i had to like really read about
- 31:46that i was like
- 31:46it was a tropical forest storm what
- 31:51um yes okay so that's its name tropical
- 31:54storm
- 31:55um so forest is a blowing and a weason
- 31:58as
- 31:58vietnam flight 474 nears the no trung
- 32:02airport runway and begins to descend
- 32:05but the rough weather conditions push
- 32:08the plane
- 32:093.7 miles or 6 kilometers off course
- 32:12and the plane descends below a safe
- 32:15altitude
- 32:16the pilot struggles to control the
- 32:18aircraft but sadly fails
- 32:21the sudden drop in altitude causes the
- 32:23plane to hit the top of a mountain
- 32:25like a ridge but it doesn't crash yet
- 32:28and the plane impacts the trees at 300
- 32:31miles per hour
- 32:33yikes ripping off one of the wings
- 32:36oh my gosh this reminds me of like the
- 32:38andes
- 32:39plain disaster that i did she actually
- 32:42talks about that
- 32:43oh gosh okay here we go full circle here
- 32:46i know
- 32:46like oh there's always all these weird
- 32:47connections there is uh
- 32:49i'm surprised no one talked about
- 32:51marilyn monroe she feels like she shows
- 32:53up in every other thing we do
- 32:55that's true okay so they hit these trees
- 32:58at 300 miles per hour
- 33:00it rips off a wing and it's this impact
- 33:02that is believed to have knocked a net
- 33:04unconscious the loss of one of the wings
- 33:07propels the craft forward at an even
- 33:10faster speed as it rockets towards the
- 33:13neighboring mountain the plane then
- 33:15crashes into the mountain
- 33:17and the impact flips it upside down and
- 33:20breaks it into three pieces oh my gosh
- 33:23the cockpit the remaining wing and the
- 33:25fuselage
- 33:27the wreckage was located 19 miles from
- 33:29not trang
- 33:30and 10 miles away from the closest
- 33:32village
- 33:33near the top of a mountain in the dense
- 33:36jungle
- 33:37terrifying ah great
- 33:40amazingly though annette survived the
- 33:42crash
- 33:43obviously that's why we're here uh after
- 33:47blacking out the next thing she
- 33:48remembered
- 33:49was waking up to the clamorous sounds of
- 33:52the jungle
- 33:53and when she opened her eyes she could
- 33:54see green vegetation coming in through a
- 33:57large hole in the fuselage
- 33:58okay she could see the cockpit had been
- 34:01torn off
- 34:02and as she looked around everything
- 34:05seemed like
- 34:06eerily still oh like imagine the silence
- 34:10but also the loud sounds of the jungle
- 34:13and also she probably has rain in her
- 34:14ears i mean is she
- 34:16upside down still uh no she's not upside
- 34:20down i'll here i'll tell you okay
- 34:24uh she realized there was an enormous
- 34:26weight on her legs
- 34:28and saw that she was stuck under a seat
- 34:31that was being weighed down by a dead
- 34:34body
- 34:36and she begins frantically to try and
- 34:38push the seats off of her
- 34:40um and i'm sure her claustrophobia is
- 34:42probably kicking in again at this point
- 34:45i'm surprised like she wasn't in like a
- 34:46coma for a while or like
- 34:48you know what i mean yeah well i think
- 34:49she was probably knocked out for at
- 34:51least a couple hours i don't
- 34:52know oh really she doesn't know how long
- 34:54okay yeah i guess it's hard to
- 34:56tell right she just wakes up she's like
- 34:57just sounded like it was right away but
- 34:59yeah okay it would make sense if she was
- 35:00out for a bit
- 35:01yeah they don't say but i'm probably i'm
- 35:04guessing she's probably out for at least
- 35:05a couple hours
- 35:06okay um so she
- 35:10is she's unable to push the the seats
- 35:13off
- 35:13um at first and then she kind of panics
- 35:17um and she rips her legs out from under
- 35:20them
- 35:20but she cuts them open in the process of
- 35:22doing this ouch
- 35:24um and it's during the struggle that
- 35:26annette sees poor
- 35:27posture still in his seat that has been
- 35:30tipped backwards and he is deceased
- 35:33so sad oh god i can't even imagine
- 35:36seeing that
- 35:37she said when she looked at his face his
- 35:39lips had a sweet
- 35:40smile on them which i found to be very
- 35:43strange
- 35:44and maybe i don't know nice yeah that's
- 35:46either
- 35:47creepy or nice i don't know i don't i
- 35:49don't know how i feel about that i mean
- 35:51it's not
- 35:51coming from like a maniacal no but it's
- 35:54just like
- 35:54eerie i wonder what made him smile
- 35:57i mean i probably didn't make him smile
- 36:01he probably didn't do it himself right i
- 36:03don't know crash made him smile like
- 36:05you know manipulated his body i guess
- 36:08that's what i would think it's just like
- 36:10i haven't heard of other people like
- 36:12crash victims like dying with a smile on
- 36:14their face it's just interesting yeah
- 36:16that's very interesting
- 36:16i don't look at those faces i guess i
- 36:19don't either
- 36:20i don't tell anyone what do i know it
- 36:23just seemed
- 36:23weird um but nice uh maybe he saw that
- 36:26she lived and he was like yeah nice and
- 36:29then
- 36:29passed she's alive okay
- 36:33i don't know but seeing this
- 36:35understandably
- 36:36was very upsetting for annette and then
- 36:39she blacks out again
- 36:40oh yeah i mean i can't even oh the
- 36:42trauma
- 36:43and the next thing she remembers um
- 36:45she's sitting on the ground
- 36:46outside of the fuselage in an immense
- 36:49amount of pain
- 36:50okay so she somehow got out of the
- 36:52fuselage without even remembering like
- 36:54remembering how she got out of there
- 36:55fascinating
- 36:56yeah it's pretty i mean it like speaks
- 36:58to what your body is capable of doing
- 37:00without your brain like
- 37:01recording it wow that's intense
- 37:05yeah that's blowing my mind i know it's
- 37:06just like strictly autopilot
- 37:09yeah because it sees something so
- 37:11traumatizing
- 37:12fascinating like presses the skip button
- 37:14it's like your brain is so smart where
- 37:16it's like i'm gonna control your body
- 37:18to get out of here but i'm also gonna
- 37:21try and save you for
- 37:22some trauma and turn off your brain to
- 37:24remember this
- 37:25yeah that's so weird we're just going to
- 37:27get through this and it's going to be
- 37:29fine
- 37:29you won't remember you're welcome i
- 37:31wonder how long it took i wonder if she
- 37:33was just like crawling forever
- 37:34oh okay yeah cause she's also very
- 37:36injured you will find
- 37:38yeah okay so annette would later learn
- 37:41the thing that actually ended up saving
- 37:43her and condemning the rest were the
- 37:46seat belts they were wearing
- 37:48you'll remember that annette refused to
- 37:50wear hers
- 37:51right and i thought that was a huge
- 37:52no-no oddly it saved her life
- 37:55oh snap right because the plane was
- 37:58older
- 37:58um it still had seat belts that went
- 38:00across your chest like in a car
- 38:03um oh on an airplane okay yeah yeah okay
- 38:05i think they just do
- 38:06like lap belts right yeah yeah um
- 38:09so i wonder if like these kinds of
- 38:11deaths had something
- 38:13to do with the change because when the
- 38:16plane hit the first ridge
- 38:18so this is how this is what they think
- 38:20happened to net so the plane hits the
- 38:22first ridge
- 38:23of trees and she likely went flying out
- 38:25of her seat because she wasn't wearing a
- 38:27seatbelt
- 38:28um and in her words tumbled around in
- 38:30the cabin like a lonely piece of laundry
- 38:32in a dryer oh my god
- 38:34she's just like getting you know flung
- 38:36around in the cabin
- 38:37like she's nothing yeah and at some
- 38:39point she must have slid under a seat
- 38:42legs first and gotten stuck there before
- 38:44the second
- 38:45impact which also might have saved her
- 38:47life interesting
- 38:48many others including poche were killed
- 38:50after the violent impact caused their
- 38:52ribs to be crushed into their lungs
- 38:55i see oh no yeah
- 38:58i don't like imagining that yes because
- 39:01the seat belt i think it said like it
- 39:02could
- 39:03withstand like 300 or 3000 pounds of
- 39:05force or something like that so it just
- 39:07like
- 39:07crushes your it just your body gives
- 39:10before the belt does
- 39:11yeah oh snaps oh brutal
- 39:14gross got the things you don't even
- 39:16think about right you don't think about
- 39:18that
- 39:19so when annette comes to outside of the
- 39:22fuselage uh she's in so much pain she
- 39:24can barely move
- 39:25and she begins to take stock of her
- 39:27injuries
- 39:28and i recommend you stop eating for this
- 39:31next part if anyone
- 39:32is it's gonna be gross creepy
- 39:36okay so the first thing she noticed uh
- 39:38was that the wraparound skirt she was
- 39:40wearing had been ripped off
- 39:41and she's just sitting there in her
- 39:42underwear which would also be jarring
- 39:44like how why am i half naked right now
- 39:46like how did that happen
- 39:47that's extra vulnerability right um as
- 39:50she looked at her bare legs
- 39:52she saw that there was a gaping wound on
- 39:54her left
- 39:55knee and her right ankle had basically
- 39:58had the sh the skin just shorn off okay
- 40:02a little higher up on her shin was the
- 40:05worst injury of all
- 40:06a compound fracture she could see four
- 40:10inches of bluish bone
- 40:12sticking through her flesh on her leg
- 40:15no no no i can't deal with compound
- 40:18fractures that's like a thing for me
- 40:20i've talked about the basketball player
- 40:21i've seen his leg break and it's
- 40:23such a thing for me i saw that on
- 40:25television and he was wearing a sock and
- 40:27i'm traumatized by it it just
- 40:29can't just to see your own like as sharp
- 40:32as
- 40:32object but it's your bones kid
- 40:38it's hard it's rough i'm uncomfortable
- 40:40yes okay
- 40:41yuck seeing this startled her
- 40:44and she instinctually jerked back which
- 40:48caused a new agony to
- 40:49blossom from her hips the gasp she let
- 40:53out from the pain
- 40:54also made her realize the immense pain
- 40:56in her lungs and chest
- 40:58allowing her to only take shallow
- 41:00breaths
- 41:01she would later find that one of her
- 41:04lungs had collapsed yikes
- 41:06she also had two large cuts near her
- 41:09right elbow so she just sits there
- 41:13and while trying to gather herself she
- 41:15realizes she isn't alone
- 41:17she can hear the moaning of other
- 41:19passengers stop it shut up right now
- 41:21no still alarm no no i didn't think
- 41:25no okay abby you're doing this to me
- 41:28again
- 41:29i'm sorry i'm not sorry i'm sorry
- 41:34okay so she can she can hear them inside
- 41:36of the wrecked fuselage
- 41:38and as she looks around she sees several
- 41:40corpses
- 41:41and a young vietnamese girl about 10
- 41:43feet away
- 41:44also moaning in pain from unseen
- 41:46injuries
- 41:48annette looks in the other direction and
- 41:50realizes she is seated
- 41:51right next to a vietnamese man who is
- 41:53still also alive
- 41:56he begins speaking to her in english and
- 41:58tells her not to worry
- 42:00and that someone would comfort them oh
- 42:01my god stop he's
- 42:03comforting her oh my gosh
- 42:06uh he saw her exposed and injured legs
- 42:08and took a pair of polyester suit pants
- 42:10out of his suitcase
- 42:12he was amazingly still holding on to
- 42:15and gave them to her wow so he was able
- 42:17to move a little
- 42:19yeah oh my gosh okay uh and
- 42:22they i think the vietnamese girl also
- 42:23had her bag with her and so did annette
- 42:25like they all somehow had their bags
- 42:27like they had just
- 42:28clung to their like possessions yeah um
- 42:31which is kind of wild like i don't know
- 42:33if i would have done like
- 42:35had the forethought to grab my purse on
- 42:37the way out right
- 42:38like i don't know um
- 42:42so he gives him her these pants and she
- 42:45says like a million thank yous and she
- 42:47tries to pull the pants on over her
- 42:48you know ruined legs bit by bit she was
- 42:52able to pull them up until she got to
- 42:53her
- 42:54butt which felt broken beyond belief
- 42:57oh she said the bones there felt crushed
- 43:00ew no but she still managed to get the
- 43:02pants on
- 43:04citing modesty as her motivator oh my
- 43:06god
- 43:07naked out here yeah i didn't want to
- 43:09either
- 43:10i don't know if my modesty would
- 43:12outweigh the pain in that situation that
- 43:13i'm like true
- 43:14to deal with my busted up ass cheeks
- 43:15like yeah i mean if i'm still
- 43:17wearing underwear it's just like i'm
- 43:18[ __ ] human deal with it it's a leg
- 43:20it's a leg but we
- 43:24have my leg but i guess it is the jungle
- 43:25you probably want to be covered
- 43:27because like bugs and bugs and animals
- 43:29and cold or
- 43:30yeah hot or i don't know but yeah yeah
- 43:33and you i guess yeah you'd want to cover
- 43:35up your wounds
- 43:36oh it's still sure it's sweaty if it's
- 43:39hot
- 43:39it is hot i mean they're in the jungle
- 43:41it's awful
- 43:42very humid uh so the man next to annette
- 43:46tells her he is a very important man and
- 43:49that someone would be coming for him
- 43:51this comforts her at first but over the
- 43:53next few hours she
- 43:55hears fewer and fewer sounds from the
- 43:57survivors and she can see the man next
- 43:59to her growing weaker
- 44:00oh no she begs him to hold on
- 44:03and not to leave her there alone but he
- 44:06too eventually succumbs to his injuries
- 44:08and annette watches him die that is
- 44:11wild and i don't want to watch somebody
- 44:13die in my arms
- 44:15like a stranger but you're like together
- 44:17by this terrible event
- 44:19like right like you would be like bonded
- 44:21beyond belief in a matter of an
- 44:22instant no like in an intimate like way
- 44:25like it's just so crazy and like you're
- 44:27literally watching these last moments
- 44:29and you're you're the only person for
- 44:31them
- 44:31and it's like something you can never i
- 44:34mean that's just mind-boggling
- 44:35oh so and also traumatic like it doesn't
- 44:38matter if it's a stranger it's
- 44:39it's a human experience of just like
- 44:41absolute heartbreak
- 44:42yeah you oh sad yeah it's
- 44:46and now she realizes she's completely
- 44:48alone in the jungle
- 44:49imagine the am the mounting fear coming
- 44:52over her
- 44:53the terror like like as like as you
- 44:56early said like getting quieter like
- 45:00can't kill me so annette marks the
- 45:04time by the dead man's watch and waits
- 45:06for help to come
- 45:07trying to focus on anything but the
- 45:09thought of her dead fiance like feet
- 45:11away
- 45:12she said she would shut down any
- 45:14thoughts of him because she knew she
- 45:16wouldn't be able to bear it and she
- 45:17needed to survive
- 45:19she knew crying would make her thirsty
- 45:21and she didn't have water yeah and she's
- 45:22sort of sweating and all that
- 45:24yeah i'm sure so like just so much more
- 45:27just like gotta compartmentalize
- 45:30so instead she would concentrate on the
- 45:32beauty of the jungle
- 45:33and the way the sun hit the green leaves
- 45:35above her
- 45:37she's like really into nature like
- 45:39that's how she started kind of getting
- 45:40out of this
- 45:41mentally you almost have to like go into
- 45:43like a meditative state
- 45:44yeah she talked about that she talked
- 45:46about yoga breathing yeah
- 45:47which she kind of had to do with a
- 45:49collapsed lung yeah it's hard to breathe
- 45:52uh she stayed awake for as long as she
- 45:55could and she contemplated smoking the
- 45:57cigarette she had on her
- 45:59nice but ultimately decided now would be
- 46:02the perfect time to quit
- 46:03and went to sleep instead i'm going to
- 46:06take advantage of this situation
- 46:08yeah i don't think the collapsed lung
- 46:10would have appreciated it
- 46:11yeah annette woke up the next morning
- 46:14in the same nightmare she went to sleep
- 46:16in oh can you imagine like hoping that
- 46:18was all a nightmare and then you wake up
- 46:20and it's
- 46:20a reality and it's still happening it's
- 46:22not over yet they didn't find you
- 46:24i can't even handle it okay so
- 46:28she wakes up dying of thirst her feet
- 46:31are badly swollen
- 46:33and she's covered in leeches ew
- 46:36michael that's disgusting that's so
- 46:41disturbing toilet party
- 46:42just now uh and god knows what other
- 46:45kind of bugs and
- 46:46creepy crawly she's covered in insect
- 46:47bites ew
- 46:49they're like trying to eat her alive
- 46:52but at least she was in the jungle
- 46:53during the rainy season because soon it
- 46:55started to downpour
- 46:57and annette was able to tip her head
- 46:58back and drink oh that might have feel
- 47:00nice too
- 47:01yeah a little a little refreshing she
- 47:04decided
- 47:05she had about a week before she was
- 47:07going to die out there
- 47:08or crawl into the jungle and so she
- 47:11continued to wait
- 47:13it was saturday now and they were
- 47:15expected back on wednesday
- 47:17so annette knew that if they hadn't been
- 47:18heard from by wednesday
- 47:20someone would raise the alarm if they
- 47:21hadn't already the day passes with no
- 47:25sign of rescue
- 47:26and she sleeps once again out in the
- 47:28open jungle
- 47:30in her book she doesn't really talk
- 47:31about being that terrified just sitting
- 47:33there
- 47:34helpless and injured where like any
- 47:36number of predators could come finish
- 47:37well i'd be thinking of like large
- 47:39snakes and tigers and [ __ ]
- 47:41immediately i'd be like i'm gonna get
- 47:42eight yeah ate up
- 47:45easily you're an injured you're injured
- 47:48yeah
- 47:48you can't move ugh and yeah
- 47:51there's no chance for you fighting
- 47:52anything off and like there's other
- 47:54bodies too so maybe they're like
- 47:56drawing them smelling that are they like
- 47:58sharks and smells
- 47:59good you would think terrifying
- 48:02but maybe she's too hurt to care i don't
- 48:03know yeah
- 48:05okay so annette wakes up on the third
- 48:08day
- 48:08wow to an awful putrid smell
- 48:12and i'm sorry this is going to be gross
- 48:13again she looks over at the dead man
- 48:16beside her
- 48:17and sees a white maggot crawling out of
- 48:20his half
- 48:21open eyelid she looks at his body and
- 48:25horror and she realizes he is covered
- 48:27with them
- 48:28oh my god and obviously one of the
- 48:30sources of the smell
- 48:31i mean they're they're decomposing
- 48:33quickly because they're in the heat
- 48:35and constant moisture in the jungle very
- 48:38quickly very gross
- 48:40so annette decides she needs to move
- 48:42away from there yeah
- 48:44and begins to agonizingly drag her body
- 48:47away using her elbows which one of them
- 48:50has a gaping open wound yeah
- 48:52but she manages uh to move further
- 48:54downhill where the other detached
- 48:56wing of the plane was laying and settles
- 48:59in a study a sunny clearing
- 49:02she had grabbed the vietnamese girl her
- 49:04bag when she moved past
- 49:06and uh
- 49:09and found a blue plastic rain poncho
- 49:13which she was able to put on and it like
- 49:15kept her dry
- 49:16oh from the downpour and another day
- 49:19passes with no rescue
- 49:21terrible when she wakes up on the fourth
- 49:24day
- 49:24she's extremely groggy and she's thirsty
- 49:27and she looks over at the detached
- 49:29plane wing and notices some foam
- 49:31insulation coming from within it
- 49:34annette grabs as many chunks of it as
- 49:36she can and she waits for it to rain
- 49:38when it does she uses the insulation as
- 49:40sponges and she rings out all the water
- 49:43they collected into her mouth
- 49:44and she said it was the best water she
- 49:46had ever tasted
- 49:48smart yeah i was kind of thinking she
- 49:50would like
- 49:52collect water using the poncho but that
- 49:54would be smart too
- 49:56there was a few things that she did like
- 49:58she made a joke she's like i was i'm a
- 50:00city girl like i don't know what i'm
- 50:01doing out here
- 50:02yeah like you don't know survival tips
- 50:03like yeah because she was talking about
- 50:05smoking a cigarette because she had a
- 50:06lighter
- 50:07and she's like what am i gonna do light
- 50:08a fire i'm like yes
- 50:12quite a fire maybe someone will see
- 50:14smoke a signal fire
- 50:17but she's like everything's soggy out
- 50:18here and yeah
- 50:20i'll just wait
- 50:21[Laughter]
- 50:23but yeah that was kind of funny i was
- 50:25like oh she had some stuff but she just
- 50:27didn't
- 50:27know what to do yeah okay
- 50:31so the day continues as the ones had
- 50:34before
- 50:35with no rescue in sight back at home
- 50:38everyone had learned of the missing
- 50:40flight
- 50:41and the only person who seemed
- 50:43determined that annette had survived was
- 50:45her close friend and training partner
- 50:47jamie
- 50:47interesting why would she just think she
- 50:50okay
- 50:51right i it is interesting that he like
- 50:53he refuses to believe she was gone and
- 50:55became angry when people talked about
- 50:56her in the past tense
- 50:58fascinating and he would become integral
- 51:01in her rescue
- 51:02ah he felt something he knew something
- 51:04he knew something there yeah
- 51:05instantly he's just like she's alive
- 51:07yeah it's kind of crazy
- 51:09annette spent day five in the jungle
- 51:11counting out the time before she could
- 51:13squeeze another bit of insulation full
- 51:15of water into her mouth
- 51:16she did this every three hours okay good
- 51:19she also examined her hands which had
- 51:21now become severely
- 51:23uh swollen um as her feet had previously
- 51:26her toes were now turning black and uh
- 51:29she thought about the frostbitten toes
- 51:31of the survivors of the andes disaster
- 51:33okay that's where she starts thinking
- 51:34yeah
- 51:36and she's like looking around and she's
- 51:37like don't worry i'm not going to eat
- 51:38anyone like because that's not going to
- 51:40happen
- 51:41i didn't wonder that like she literally
- 51:43says it like i'm not eating anyone
- 51:46no that would be a decision i wouldn't
- 51:48make i wouldn't do that
- 51:50no i think in the andes it's different
- 51:52because the situation is just so
- 51:54different
- 51:55yeah and it's cold it's cold where
- 51:57people are like more like preserved
- 51:59oh gross but like they weren't in the
- 52:01jungle where everything just
- 52:02putrefies so quickly it smells so bad
- 52:06yeah different situation yeah but
- 52:09so funny how that connected yeah um
- 52:13so she annette thinks about her family
- 52:16and her friends
- 52:17to keep her going and she pointedly
- 52:18tries not to think of poche
- 52:21and then the day passes without rescue
- 52:23once again
- 52:24oh my god on the sixth day annette wakes
- 52:27up and realizes
- 52:28she needs to use the bathroom oh this
- 52:31whole time
- 52:32i know i was like well i guess she's
- 52:33only been drinking like a little bit and
- 52:35not eating so
- 52:36it's only just now becoming a problem
- 52:38okay like all of her water is probably
- 52:40just being absorbed
- 52:41in her body she's got nothing left over
- 52:43to pee out
- 52:44um so this woman this poor woman refuses
- 52:48to go in her pants she says i will not
- 52:50be painting my pants
- 52:51okay she's still got the pants on she
- 52:52doesn't want to pee them no and instead
- 52:55drags herself back uphill and goes
- 52:57through the excruciating
- 52:58process of taking off her borrowed pants
- 53:00oh my gosh
- 53:01she does this and then she sees she's
- 53:05she sees that she has gotten her [ __ ]
- 53:08period
- 53:09no [ __ ] that's come on the literal
- 53:12cherry on top ah gosh of course like the
- 53:16worst
- 53:17please am i not bleeding enough for you
- 53:19mother nature like
- 53:20can i be enough jesus women being a
- 53:23woman
- 53:24is sucky sometimes i know although she
- 53:26probably wouldn't feel the cramps
- 53:28you know yeah that'd probably be like
- 53:29the scale of it would be nothing maybe
- 53:31nothing she's like i didn't even realize
- 53:32i got it
- 53:33oh my gosh oh it's terrible so she
- 53:36manages to relieve herself and she gets
- 53:38her pants back on before dragging
- 53:39back herself back to the her spot and
- 53:42then she collapses completely exhausted
- 53:44yeah dude that would take so much energy
- 53:47it was after this that annette started
- 53:48having these out of body experiences
- 53:50yes so blood loss shock and deprivation
- 53:54of water and food all
- 53:55probably factored into this yeah but
- 53:57annette describes the experience as
- 53:59beautiful like she said that she felt
- 54:02like she was one with nature
- 54:04yes and she felt immense love and peace
- 54:07when she was in the state she said that
- 54:10the pain left her and she was
- 54:11able to cope with the death around her
- 54:14seeing it as part of the circle of life
- 54:16on the path to rebirth so she's dealing
- 54:19with this like way better than i would
- 54:21have
- 54:22oh for it's just like one with nature
- 54:24and everything is beautiful
- 54:27that'd be amazing though i mean that
- 54:29sounds nice
- 54:30yeah on the seventh day oh gosh
- 54:34annette is kind of in and out of
- 54:35consciousness she's very lightheaded and
- 54:38all of the colors around here
- 54:40her appear super vibrant and bright she
- 54:43describes a feeling of peace and
- 54:44acceptance as she surrenders herself
- 54:47to the universe and listens to the
- 54:49sounds of the jungle
- 54:50oh but she gets snapped back to reality
- 54:53when she hears a branch break
- 54:56feels scary she looks around to where
- 54:58the sound came from
- 54:59and sees a man okay it's hard for her
- 55:02eyes to focus
- 55:03but she sees a man across the ravine
- 55:05from her and he's wearing bright orange
- 55:08like official bright orange like traffic
- 55:11orange yeah okay
- 55:12his hood is up and he's staring right at
- 55:15her
- 55:16her voice comes out like a croak but she
- 55:18tries to call
- 55:19to him anyway and she's like hello
- 55:22oh my god can you hear me like can you
- 55:24help me help me yeah over and over but
- 55:26he does nothing but stare
- 55:28what she's completely out of zen mode
- 55:30now
- 55:31and starts cursing at this guy in every
- 55:33language she can think of
- 55:34and she knows quite a few it's pretty
- 55:36impressive she's like okay forget this
- 55:37piece
- 55:38you and you with german
- 55:42dutch and english and spanish um
- 55:45so but he just continues to stare is he
- 55:48like in shock or something
- 55:50i'll i'm not gonna tell you okay okay
- 55:54uh she said he stared at her without
- 55:56blinking for hours
- 55:58hours and then was suddenly gone as
- 56:00quickly as he appeared
- 56:01okay she's [ __ ] hallucinating you're
- 56:03tricking me annette told herself she
- 56:05must have hallucinated him
- 56:06that's what he said uh that was the next
- 56:09line yeah so she thinks
- 56:10oh that's sad she's like maybe i must
- 56:12have hallucinated and then she just
- 56:14falls asleep
- 56:16someone at the door sounds like it
- 56:21[Music]
- 56:28and we're back again ah alrighty
- 56:31we uh we got a printer delivered so
- 56:34we're happy about that
- 56:35um michael's nerding out yeah he's
- 56:37excited to set that up later
- 56:39it's hard to do a podcast in the early
- 56:41morning hours apparently yeah that's
- 56:43what we get for
- 56:44like trying to record early is we're
- 56:45constantly interrupted i know we were
- 56:47like on her [ __ ] it doesn't matter
- 56:49okay all right so she's like i must have
- 56:52hallucinated him
- 56:53right and she falls asleep okay when she
- 56:56wakes up on the eighth day
- 56:58she's really groggy but she remembers
- 57:00the man in orange from the day before
- 57:02and she looks around to see if she can
- 57:04spot him again and she does
- 57:07he is crouching aways from her and once
- 57:10again
- 57:11is just staring at her i don't like this
- 57:13why aren't you helping her if you're
- 57:14real
- 57:15right he's just watching she decides
- 57:18she's going to watch him too
- 57:19and see all she can do she's like i'll
- 57:22stare at you back
- 57:24and she sees that he has black hair uh
- 57:26brown eyes tan
- 57:27skin and she describes his face as
- 57:29beautiful
- 57:30i think she thinks everything's
- 57:31beautiful at this moment uh-huh she
- 57:33seems to
- 57:33she's like every nature is beautiful
- 57:36that man is beautiful
- 57:37it probably was beautiful yeah after
- 57:38hers was gorgeous
- 57:40she assumes he must be native to the
- 57:44area but can't fathom why he won't speak
- 57:46to her or come closer
- 57:47she yells at him again with no results a
- 57:50few hours pass and he vanishes again
- 57:53trusting annette passes in and out of
- 57:55reality for the rest of the day
- 57:57she knew she was dying and she welcomed
- 57:59it she was ready
- 58:01please be done with me now like eight
- 58:03days come on
- 58:05gosh and then in the afternoon she once
- 58:08again heard branches snapping but this
- 58:10time
- 58:11the sound of several male voices
- 58:13followed okay
- 58:14she had finally been found yay
- 58:18so a group of vietnamese men come
- 58:21walking out of the jungle
- 58:22and one man approached her with a flight
- 58:23roster and gestured for her to point at
- 58:26her name
- 58:27she did and was rewarded by the sip of
- 58:29the most refreshing water she had ever
- 58:31tasted nice
- 58:33more men came with a sheet of canvas
- 58:36material that she was moved on to
- 58:38and then both ends were tied to a long
- 58:41stick
- 58:42kind of like a hammock okay so and then
- 58:44there was one man on each end to carry
- 58:46her
- 58:47gotcha um because they they didn't come
- 58:50prepared
- 58:51for anyone to be alive i see they
- 58:54brought a lot of body bags
- 58:56i see yeah they weren't expecting her to
- 58:58have made it so they didn't have any
- 59:00kind of like stretch or anything i mean
- 59:01yeah can you imagine like
- 59:03i wouldn't think anyone survived either
- 59:04eight days later no no no
- 59:07um okay so they're carrying her away
- 59:09from the spot that she's been living for
- 59:10like the past eight days
- 59:12geez she could see the other men backing
- 59:14up the bodies from the plane
- 59:16and annette started to panic as she
- 59:17realized she was being taken away from
- 59:19posture
- 59:20no but one of them gave her another
- 59:23small sip of water which she said worked
- 59:25like valium
- 59:26and she kind of calmed down the men
- 59:29carrying her walked as carefully as they
- 59:31could through the thick
- 59:32jungle but even the smallest jostle
- 59:34would make a net cry out in pain
- 59:36the men carrying her took off their
- 59:38shoes to step even softer
- 59:40oh they're trying so hard i know like
- 59:42that's so nice
- 59:44in the jungle you're going barefoot yeah
- 59:47they make
- 59:47uh camp that night in the jungle and the
- 59:49men give annette small sips of water
- 59:52and laugh at her when she holds fingers
- 59:53to her lips in the gesture of smoking
- 59:56oh my gosh hilarious like a cigarette
- 59:58you guys got a cigarette i have your
- 1:00:00cigarettes
- 1:00:00they're like no silly white lady but
- 1:00:03also kind of sucky that they have to
- 1:00:05camp out in the jungle for a night right
- 1:00:06that she can't get out the first night
- 1:00:08yeah
- 1:00:09um it's not that they didn't have
- 1:00:10cigarettes on them like they were
- 1:00:12smoking
- 1:00:12oh they just weren't gonna give them
- 1:00:14right they're hurt it's probably not a
- 1:00:15good idea
- 1:00:16no they're like no you're half dead
- 1:00:18we're trying to save you
- 1:00:19come on so she spent the night once
- 1:00:23more in the jungle and the next day the
- 1:00:25men packed up
- 1:00:26and took her to a small village but the
- 1:00:28hospital there was not so much a
- 1:00:30hospital and more like a hut with a few
- 1:00:32medical supplies
- 1:00:34they're in a really rural area and this
- 1:00:36village can't be expected to have the
- 1:00:37resources to deal with
- 1:00:39her kind of injuries right very severe
- 1:00:41so annette is placed in a minivan
- 1:00:44and is moved again to the ho chi ray min
- 1:00:47or
- 1:00:47yeah sorry hospital in ho chi minh city
- 1:00:52so while being treated her parents and
- 1:00:54sister along with poshj's sister
- 1:00:56arrive in vietnam to see annette but the
- 1:00:59most surprising visitor
- 1:01:00was her trading partner jamie oh
- 1:01:04in her feeble state she says to him what
- 1:01:06the [ __ ] are you doing here
- 1:01:08it's like the last person you would
- 1:01:10think would visit you she's like who's
- 1:01:11minding the business
- 1:01:12[Laughter]
- 1:01:14he's like wow thanks
- 1:01:15[Music]
- 1:01:17she didn't know it at the time but jamie
- 1:01:19had already started traveling to vietnam
- 1:01:21before he even found out she was alive
- 1:01:23he just knew she wasn't dead
- 1:01:27and he said quote annette's father got
- 1:01:29angry when i promised him before i left
- 1:01:31i will bring your daughter back alive
- 1:01:33and he said you're an
- 1:01:34idiot and get real
- 1:01:38a way to rub it back in his face i
- 1:01:40always like trying to be like
- 1:01:42gallant and like i'll bring her back and
- 1:01:45he's like you're an idiot
- 1:01:46that's not funny that he does i know but
- 1:01:48then he does like what
- 1:01:50okay so when annette saw her mom she was
- 1:01:52finally allowed
- 1:01:54she finally allowed herself to break
- 1:01:55down and then she kind of blacked out
- 1:01:56again yeah
- 1:01:57jesus like oh like the first time you're
- 1:02:00letting yourself what a
- 1:02:01relief and like process like now you can
- 1:02:04feel
- 1:02:04those feelings you weren't letting
- 1:02:05yourself feel before
- 1:02:08annette's family was horrified by the
- 1:02:10conditions in the hospital
- 1:02:12and they feared she was going to lose
- 1:02:13her leg to gain green
- 1:02:16they begged the vietnamese government to
- 1:02:17allow a net to be transferred
- 1:02:19to a more modern private hospital in
- 1:02:21singapore and the request was approved
- 1:02:24annette had to be flown there which not
- 1:02:26go over well
- 1:02:27um no no
- 1:02:30her mother was allowed to travel with
- 1:02:32her and had to keep speaking to annette
- 1:02:34to keep her focused and awake
- 1:02:36even still they almost lost her on the
- 1:02:38way there
- 1:02:39so annette finally gets to the mount
- 1:02:41elizabeth hospital in singapore
- 1:02:43and begins to receive care and treatment
- 1:02:45for her many injuries which include
- 1:02:48a broken jaw hers was broken in half oh
- 1:02:51my gosh
- 1:02:52uh let's see 12 fractures in her hip
- 1:02:56two fractures in her leg many cuts and
- 1:02:59bruises
- 1:03:00along with malnutrition and dehydration
- 1:03:02yeah
- 1:03:03uh the latter would lead to the loss of
- 1:03:04one of her kidneys
- 1:03:07like i guess you can't go without water
- 1:03:08for that long and not have
- 1:03:10bad kidneys after that yeah um
- 1:03:13this is her next this is a little gross
- 1:03:16morning you again
- 1:03:17okay she almost lost her hands and feet
- 1:03:19to gain green
- 1:03:21but thankfully and disgustingly maggots
- 1:03:23were used to eat away all of the
- 1:03:25decaying flesh
- 1:03:26which slowed down the spread of the
- 1:03:28infection
- 1:03:29interesting i feel like i've heard of
- 1:03:31that i've heard of that before too and
- 1:03:32you're like
- 1:03:33that is so counter-intuitive disgusting
- 1:03:35and morbid
- 1:03:36what makes sense ew but it's like you're
- 1:03:38literally watching bugs eating your leg
- 1:03:40eating
- 1:03:42just the dead parts just the tattoos you
- 1:03:45though and bugs ew yeah i hate
- 1:03:48i guess they make me like they would be
- 1:03:50just even the word maggot is so gross
- 1:03:52there would be so many of them too so
- 1:03:54there would be like a bunch of like
- 1:03:55crawly things
- 1:03:59uh even worse the deep wounds had to be
- 1:04:02scraped clean several times a day oh
- 1:04:06no i can't it makes me shudder
- 1:04:10just like oh don't yeah i don't like
- 1:04:13that word nope i don't like that at all
- 1:04:15annette was very anxious and panicky in
- 1:04:18the hospital
- 1:04:19duh and the thing that calmed her the
- 1:04:21most was holding a bottle of water
- 1:04:24so that she could take sips from it and
- 1:04:26playing tetris on a game boy her sister
- 1:04:28bought her
- 1:04:28oh i love tetris on gameboy right i
- 1:04:31remember that was the [ __ ]
- 1:04:32yeah i remember we i played it so much
- 1:04:34on that vegas road trip that i was
- 1:04:36literally dreaming tetris
- 1:04:39i was like i gotta stop playing tetris
- 1:04:42that's a little too much
- 1:04:42that's funny so after a couple weeks in
- 1:04:45singapore
- 1:04:46annette was stable enough to be
- 1:04:48transferred to a dutch hospital
- 1:04:50she had to fly again strapped to a
- 1:04:52gurney which made
- 1:04:54her panic but jamie stayed with her the
- 1:04:56whole flight and got her through it
- 1:04:59back in her home country annette had
- 1:05:01basically become a celebrity
- 1:05:03which was not something that she wanted
- 1:05:06she just wanted everything to go back to
- 1:05:07normal
- 1:05:09she had to attend poshy's funeral on a
- 1:05:12stretcher after being transported in an
- 1:05:14ambulance oh my gosh the funeral was at
- 1:05:17an old church
- 1:05:18and annette couldn't help but feel like
- 1:05:20she was attending her own
- 1:05:22like macabre wedding as the medical
- 1:05:24attendants wheeled her
- 1:05:25down the aisle to push his coffin at the
- 1:05:27altar oh my god what an experience
- 1:05:31right jesus the way she described it i
- 1:05:33was like oh that is so eerie
- 1:05:35that is so eerie and kind of creepy and
- 1:05:39sad gray is so sad uh she said in her
- 1:05:42book that
- 1:05:43uh poche's parents or willem as they
- 1:05:45knew him were
- 1:05:46kind of cold to her after the accident
- 1:05:49and they didn't allow her to be included
- 1:05:51in many of
- 1:05:52like his affairs after that why i know
- 1:05:55like
- 1:05:56i never actually got married pretty much
- 1:05:58like even though they were together for
- 1:05:5913 years
- 1:06:00right like her parents were like just
- 1:06:02devastated by
- 1:06:04his death like they loved him so much
- 1:06:05and like um
- 1:06:07his mom just like well you know people
- 1:06:09react to grief differently and i guess
- 1:06:11she just like kind of
- 1:06:12i don't know was kind of cold and shut
- 1:06:14down about it and yeah
- 1:06:16that was really hard for net that sucks
- 1:06:18i know it's like after all that can we
- 1:06:19just be nice to me tyler
- 1:06:22um she was allowed to pick some of the
- 1:06:23music for the funeral
- 1:06:25one of his favorite songs which was with
- 1:06:28or without you by you two
- 1:06:29oh you don't even know i know
- 1:06:32but you joe i know you know but yeah i
- 1:06:35love that song me and chad
- 1:06:36love you too oh we're so nerd out on it
- 1:06:39i was like oh sean is going to love that
- 1:06:40song
- 1:06:41one of the classics uh but even sadder
- 1:06:44still was the fact that the vietnamese
- 1:06:46authorities had made a mistake in the
- 1:06:48identification and return of poshe's
- 1:06:50body
- 1:06:51which had actually been sent to a family
- 1:06:54in britain
- 1:06:55are you not kidding
- 1:06:58there can be no break
- 1:07:01for this woman i know or this journey
- 1:07:05it's just one thing after another and
- 1:07:08this is just so
- 1:07:09awful and like extra on top of
- 1:07:11everything else
- 1:07:12so like the the the body that she was
- 1:07:15with wasn't even his
- 1:07:16right oh my friends carried a different
- 1:07:20man to
- 1:07:20his grave can you imagine the jarring
- 1:07:22mental
- 1:07:24oh like you thought you had this like
- 1:07:25connection you think he's there and then
- 1:07:27you find out it was literally a
- 1:07:28different person
- 1:07:30i'm so angry it's so and it's like
- 1:07:33the guy that they mixed him up with had
- 1:07:35like light hair and he had dark hair so
- 1:07:37it's like
- 1:07:38oh but they so they didn't know i don't
- 1:07:40know it's just it got it
- 1:07:42they they said it was a mistake like
- 1:07:44they weren't like they said that
- 1:07:45you know they weren't trying to be
- 1:07:47terrible but i mean yeah who like
- 1:07:49forcefully tries to like
- 1:07:51mistake bodies but like oh
- 1:07:54bomber mistakes so um
- 1:07:57the family discovered that they hadn't
- 1:08:00been sent the body of their son
- 1:08:02hamish emerson who had also
- 1:08:05perished on the flight with his wife and
- 1:08:07had instead been sent the body of willem
- 1:08:09vanderpaw aka
- 1:08:11or poshy right um so they had to exhume
- 1:08:16hamish emerson from the dutch
- 1:08:19grave to be sent to britain and they had
- 1:08:21to trade back remains
- 1:08:23learning that pasche's body had already
- 1:08:25been cremated oh
- 1:08:27that's sad no it's just extra
- 1:08:30awful oh my god it's so unsatisfying
- 1:08:34i know and it really just doesn't look
- 1:08:35good on the vietnamese like officials
- 1:08:37that handled the accident
- 1:08:39no like that should have been caught and
- 1:08:42neither did the fact that they passed a
- 1:08:43law specifically aimed at the victims of
- 1:08:45the crash and their relatives
- 1:08:47limiting the airline's liability to
- 1:08:49compensate foreigners
- 1:08:51they capped it at 20k now
- 1:08:54how terrible is that absolutely not
- 1:08:56that's lame
- 1:08:57that's so bad like twenty-two one dude
- 1:09:02um they also wanted to know or people
- 1:09:05also wanted to know why it took so long
- 1:09:07to find the crash site if it was only
- 1:09:08like 12 miles away from its destination
- 1:09:11right okay from annette's testimony and
- 1:09:14the position of some of the corpses
- 1:09:16more than just a net survived that crash
- 1:09:18and people argued that more could have
- 1:09:20been saved if they had been located
- 1:09:21quicker
- 1:09:22yeah annette would later learn that a
- 1:09:25search helicopter had been sent out to
- 1:09:27look for them
- 1:09:28carrying search personnel and doctors
- 1:09:31but sadly
- 1:09:32the helicopter would find the same fate
- 1:09:34as the the plane that they were looking
- 1:09:35for and it crashed
- 1:09:37killing all eight people on board get
- 1:09:42i'm speechless i can't i'm so angry at
- 1:09:44you for telling me the story
- 1:09:46sorry so mad at you
- 1:09:49i'm so mad at you for just layering it
- 1:09:53on top like were you ready for some more
- 1:09:55because here's some more
- 1:09:56you're so more terrible in this story oh
- 1:09:58we had the perfect rescue helicopter to
- 1:10:00come get you and then
- 1:10:01all of it all of them died god oh
- 1:10:04so brutal like more people died
- 1:10:09just so sad i'm never ever getting on a
- 1:10:11helicopter no now i'm terrified of that
- 1:10:13it's not happening
- 1:10:14so many people have died on helicopters
- 1:10:16yeah it's not chill
- 1:10:17ugh so annette recovered in the hospital
- 1:10:20and a few months later she was fit
- 1:10:21enough to return to work in madrid as a
- 1:10:24big time trader with jamie she wants to
- 1:10:26be back being a badass she just wants to
- 1:10:28go right back to it
- 1:10:29they continued to make money and jamie
- 1:10:31helped annette on flights as
- 1:10:32they traveled um often for their job she
- 1:10:35was always to be seated in the front row
- 1:10:37because she couldn't bear the seat
- 1:10:39in front of her to touch her legs yeah
- 1:10:42yeah she immediately got claustrophobic
- 1:10:43and flashed back to the corpse traps and
- 1:10:45or trapping her under the seat
- 1:10:47i'm surprised she went back on a plane
- 1:10:49in [ __ ] general
- 1:10:50like i know she was like i just have to
- 1:10:52like i have to travel for my job like i
- 1:10:54have to get over this
- 1:10:55oh my gosh that's rough yeah and like
- 1:10:57when the airline wouldn't do it she'd
- 1:10:59like be like well i was in a plane crash
- 1:11:01so
- 1:11:01and i clustered her book because the
- 1:11:03dead person was on top of me so give me
- 1:11:05the good seat
- 1:11:05yeah like oh jesus sorry i'm sorry jesus
- 1:11:08give me this good
- 1:11:09see jesus okay so
- 1:11:13that's pretty crazy that she still
- 1:11:14travels um yeah
- 1:11:16and when you know it annette and jamie
- 1:11:18actually end up falling for each other
- 1:11:20nope i knew it this whole time i was
- 1:11:21waiting for it i thought they were
- 1:11:22already having an affair but
- 1:11:24they weren't that's good yeah
- 1:11:27that's like a nice kind of like circle
- 1:11:29yeah they get hitched and they move
- 1:11:31to new york city so that they can still
- 1:11:33work but also have a family
- 1:11:35they have two children together the
- 1:11:37oldest a girl and the youngest a boy
- 1:11:39who would be diagnosed with autism early
- 1:11:41in his childhood
- 1:11:43i found i did find this part of the book
- 1:11:46to actually be like really interesting
- 1:11:47and
- 1:11:48it's heart-wrenching because you can see
- 1:11:50she just like talks about it a lot and
- 1:11:51like what she goes through with
- 1:11:52struggles of raising an autistic son in
- 1:11:54the 90s
- 1:11:55like yeah and upper class society like
- 1:11:59you know with people who don't always
- 1:12:01accept those who are different
- 1:12:03yeah but she also again like has this
- 1:12:05really beautiful way of looking at
- 1:12:06things and knowing that
- 1:12:08you just have to accept things as they
- 1:12:09are and just see the beauty in them and
- 1:12:11like to stop
- 1:12:12obsessing over your expectations her
- 1:12:14perspective on
- 1:12:15life after that would be
- 1:12:19so changed it really is and like she
- 1:12:22just talks about how you like have to
- 1:12:23live in the moment
- 1:12:24yeah and there's this quote in her book
- 1:12:26and she says
- 1:12:27there is beauty in every situation once
- 1:12:29you see the beauty happiness will follow
- 1:12:31i was like damn it that's nice
- 1:12:34it's wise but yeah it seems like she
- 1:12:36just gets thrown through a loop like
- 1:12:38over and over and she just like adapts
- 1:12:40to it
- 1:12:41yeah i mean if you're constantly
- 1:12:43experiencing tragedy
- 1:12:45i mean that's life so might as well just
- 1:12:47find the beauty in it and learn things
- 1:12:50and keep going i don't know it's hard
- 1:12:52takes a strong person yeah it's hard to
- 1:12:54accept
- 1:12:55so annette and jamie's love story did
- 1:12:58start like a hollywood romance but sadly
- 1:13:00ended in divorce years later
- 1:13:02though the two remain on friendly terms
- 1:13:04that's good i mean she still had the
- 1:13:06life of a family and getting kids
- 1:13:08yeah and just so crazy that they ended
- 1:13:11up together i mean to see them together
- 1:13:13just with him and his big mustache in
- 1:13:15his head his hair right i still don't
- 1:13:17like
- 1:13:17that in my head i'll show you a picture
- 1:13:20later
- 1:13:21that's funny uh so she revisits the
- 1:13:23crash site in 2006.
- 1:13:25ah brave 13 years after the accident to
- 1:13:28reconnect with her story
- 1:13:30so that she can write a book about it
- 1:13:32and to make peace with the site
- 1:13:34and she's memory yeah this was
- 1:13:36challenging for annette
- 1:13:38not only psychologically but physically
- 1:13:39as well the accident had left her with
- 1:13:41nerve damage in one of her feet
- 1:13:43and her hips were now tilted which made
- 1:13:46one leg
- 1:13:46longer than the other wow but we already
- 1:13:49know she's a tooth cookie
- 1:13:50yeah so when she had kids yeah two
- 1:13:53children
- 1:13:54with tilted hips yeah that's a while
- 1:13:56how'd that work that's so much your body
- 1:13:58is going through okay
- 1:13:59yeah so when she gets to vietnam
- 1:14:03annette is surprised to be greeted by
- 1:14:04her rescuers and doctors who helped her
- 1:14:07in vietnam
- 1:14:07after she had been found oh i love that
- 1:14:09it was very emotional experience for all
- 1:14:11of them
- 1:14:12as they had all believed she had
- 1:14:13actually died of her injuries in
- 1:14:15singapore
- 1:14:16they had no idea no idea that she lived
- 1:14:18and then when they found out she had
- 1:14:19kids they were just like
- 1:14:21amazed and like it's huge in their
- 1:14:23culture like 13 years later
- 1:14:25yeah like we saved someone who created
- 1:14:27life like that's insane
- 1:14:28oh my god i can't believe they didn't
- 1:14:30know right wow
- 1:14:32i just while they i yeah what great news
- 1:14:34though there i'm sure they were
- 1:14:35overwhelmed with emotion
- 1:14:37yeah the the moment was really cool she
- 1:14:39was talking about like this
- 1:14:40this nurse who was like in her 70s now
- 1:14:43but she just immediately like was
- 1:14:44looking at
- 1:14:45where her injuries had been to see the
- 1:14:47scars and like
- 1:14:48knew exactly where they all were still
- 1:14:50yeah so that was cool that's fascinating
- 1:14:53all right so three men from the original
- 1:14:56crew
- 1:14:57are among the group accompanying a net
- 1:14:59to the crash site
- 1:15:00which is a long steep thickly vegetated
- 1:15:04hike um in the sweltering heat
- 1:15:07this is not something i would sign up
- 1:15:08for no
- 1:15:11when they finally arrived at the crash
- 1:15:12site all of the metal
- 1:15:14uh the metal debris was gone but there
- 1:15:15were still like remnants of the plane
- 1:15:17scattered about like carpet and that
- 1:15:18kind of stuff
- 1:15:19really so there's still debris yeah
- 1:15:21there's still pieces of debris
- 1:15:22eerie very eerie one of the original
- 1:15:26rescuers named mr cow
- 1:15:27was waiting on or waiting with the
- 1:15:29others while annette
- 1:15:30had her moment and he was squatting down
- 1:15:32on a rock
- 1:15:34when she looked at him sitting this way
- 1:15:35her memory came flooding back to her and
- 1:15:37she
- 1:15:38realized that this was the mysterious
- 1:15:40man in orange
- 1:15:41it was the same guy stop when they took
- 1:15:44a break for lunch annette asked him
- 1:15:46about it
- 1:15:47he gave an embarrassed laugh and said
- 1:15:50when he first saw her he thought she was
- 1:15:52a ghost
- 1:15:54oh my i mean yeah so okay so this guy is
- 1:15:57real he was in shock
- 1:15:58but like he's staring at her for hours
- 1:16:01damn
- 1:16:02he had never seen a white person before
- 1:16:04or blue eyes oh
- 1:16:06interesting i didn't even think about
- 1:16:08that plus she had on that blue poncho
- 1:16:10and she was like super thin
- 1:16:12and probably all bloody around a bunch
- 1:16:13of other corpses probably just looks
- 1:16:15like a totally
- 1:16:16different creature that's so injured
- 1:16:17yeah he was terrified of her
- 1:16:20oh so scared oh my god okay this makes
- 1:16:23sense okay
- 1:16:24and he said he was waiting for the ghost
- 1:16:25to leave before he went and got his
- 1:16:27friends to help clean up the site
- 1:16:29he's trying to wait until she died
- 1:16:34but he said when he wants to take her
- 1:16:35blue hood off he decided she looked
- 1:16:37human enough and finally went and got
- 1:16:39his friends
- 1:16:39okay okay okay so the mystery was
- 1:16:42finally solved 13 years later
- 1:16:44it's so funny which is pretty amazing
- 1:16:46that he was like he came back to like
- 1:16:47take her to the site again
- 1:16:49oh my gosh annette finally wrote down
- 1:16:52her experience
- 1:16:53um in her book turbulence in 2006 and it
- 1:16:56was eventually translated into
- 1:16:57vietnamese
- 1:16:58which would again bring her back to the
- 1:17:00country um
- 1:17:02and she took her daughter with her that
- 1:17:03time to show her the crash site
- 1:17:05and to introduce her to mr cow whom
- 1:17:08without she
- 1:17:09you know wouldn't have existed so it was
- 1:17:11a really touching moment when they met
- 1:17:12right and annette is still alive and
- 1:17:15well she's living in new york city with
- 1:17:17her children
- 1:17:18and every november 14th she commemorates
- 1:17:21the accident
- 1:17:22and posh's memory by counting um and
- 1:17:25keeping note of everything she consumes
- 1:17:28a quote from her for the next eight days
- 1:17:31i
- 1:17:31also count how much i eat and drink from
- 1:17:337am on the first day the second the
- 1:17:35third
- 1:17:36to pm on the eighth day it is a lot two
- 1:17:39slices of brown bread with cheese
- 1:17:41and tea with milk every morning coffee
- 1:17:43with milk another slice at 11 am
- 1:17:45lunch tea with cookies a drink with
- 1:17:47salami and olives
- 1:17:48dinner with wine tea with chocolate and
- 1:17:51water
- 1:17:52many glasses of water no hang-ups just
- 1:17:55counting
- 1:17:56i was like that is a european diet if i
- 1:17:58ever heard one right
- 1:18:00salami and olives just salami and olives
- 1:18:02i love that
- 1:18:03tea and chocolate and that's the
- 1:18:06incredible survival story of
- 1:18:08annette herfkins wow
- 1:18:11wow that's wow isn't that a crazy story
- 1:18:14you put through
- 1:18:15you put me through it you put us through
- 1:18:16it i always do you too
- 1:18:19it was a wild ride it was a good ride
- 1:18:21yeah i just like
- 1:18:23her perspectives on things were really
- 1:18:24touching and like
- 1:18:26surprising yeah after going through
- 1:18:28something so awful
- 1:18:30and all that trauma yeah and she's just
- 1:18:32so enlightened by it i was like wow
- 1:18:34wow that's it it's moving yeah
- 1:18:37so great job dang i'm tired
- 1:18:41yeah it's emotional totally we're wiped
- 1:18:45out we're wiped
- 1:18:46what do we have to do what's left what
- 1:18:49are we doing now
- 1:18:50uh oh city of the week let's do it
- 1:18:54[Music]
- 1:19:02and it's actually once again stocked in
- 1:19:04california
- 1:19:06stocked in with an honorable mention to
- 1:19:08bangs
- 1:19:09texas banks isis that's a great
- 1:19:13name great name i got bangs
- 1:19:17and thanks for the love stockton
- 1:19:18california yeah thank you you coming in
- 1:19:20hot and we
- 1:19:21appreciate it why are you so obsessed
- 1:19:23with us
- 1:19:25we love it um okay what's next
- 1:19:28do you have any watchings or listenings
- 1:19:30to recommend
- 1:19:32yeah so i think i've i think i've
- 1:19:34complained about it on here before
- 1:19:36i i mean it's annoying how many
- 1:19:37streaming services
- 1:19:39but i did recently get discovery plus
- 1:19:42and it is my new favorite streaming
- 1:19:44oh that one actually sounds like it
- 1:19:46would be really good it's really worth
- 1:19:47it because it's the cheap one right now
- 1:19:48so far
- 1:19:49and it has a bunch of like paranormal
- 1:19:51stuff a bunch of true crime stuff
- 1:19:52like and each like home stuff cooking
- 1:19:55stuff like a bunch of stuff
- 1:19:56and that's just it's like a bunch of
- 1:19:58stuff but i'm on it constantly
- 1:20:01um and i they just added um
- 1:20:04what's called uh american detective
- 1:20:08with uh i believe his name is john kenda
- 1:20:11okay um and he's like one of like the
- 1:20:14like famous
- 1:20:15top american detectives and he's had
- 1:20:17like an old show before but this one's
- 1:20:19new
- 1:20:19yeah the name is familiar yeah he was
- 1:20:21actually on an episode of small town
- 1:20:22dick's
- 1:20:23not sure okay maybe that's what i know
- 1:20:25he has like the typical
- 1:20:26like old white man voice who was just
- 1:20:28like i'm a doctor
- 1:20:29i hardly move my oh my god i think i
- 1:20:31actually talked to michael about that
- 1:20:33guy i was like everything he says
- 1:20:34sounds like an old movie quote like he's
- 1:20:36just like everything that comes out of
- 1:20:38his mouth is like
- 1:20:39kind of badass uh yeah he's an old
- 1:20:41badass and i love him and the show is so
- 1:20:43good
- 1:20:43i'm in the middle of it still but i've
- 1:20:45watched a handful of episodes
- 1:20:47and it's he's funny because he like kind
- 1:20:49of like narrates
- 1:20:50part of it and like but you see him in a
- 1:20:52chair he always like tilts his head down
- 1:20:55he's just like but not everybody it
- 1:20:57turns out it's okay and it's just like
- 1:20:59so funny
- 1:21:00because it's like the old school style
- 1:21:01it's like on the nose like where it's
- 1:21:03funny but it's also badass
- 1:21:05great yeah i recommend it we'll have to
- 1:21:07watch that because i don't have
- 1:21:08discovery plus
- 1:21:09it's worth it it's only 4.99 a month i
- 1:21:11believe so another five dollars i know
- 1:21:14get it while it's cheap i'm sure it'll
- 1:21:15go up i know
- 1:21:17that's where the new episodes of ghost
- 1:21:19adventures are at so i had to do it oh
- 1:21:21that's how they get you well i have one
- 1:21:23too mine's a podcast
- 1:21:25what are you listening to it's from vice
- 1:21:28and it's in australia it's like vice
- 1:21:30australia
- 1:21:31oh that's what seems legit yeah and it's
- 1:21:32called extremes it's actually one of the
- 1:21:34podcasts that this
- 1:21:36annette did a um an interview with oh
- 1:21:38which is why i listened to it but then
- 1:21:40it was really good
- 1:21:41and i think it was in like 2019 or
- 1:21:44something there's only like six
- 1:21:45episodes but they're like they're the
- 1:21:48interview style where it's just one
- 1:21:49person telling a crazy ass story i love
- 1:21:51those
- 1:21:52i love those so much and like there's
- 1:21:53one guy where he like ships himself from
- 1:21:56like
- 1:21:57the uk to australia in a box and like
- 1:21:59all of these like just crazy
- 1:22:01stories stories and one like antarctica
- 1:22:03so it's just like very varied
- 1:22:05but okay that sounds really good you
- 1:22:07would dig that one okay
- 1:22:09i know it all right let's go do it
- 1:22:12cool i don't think we have any anything
- 1:22:14else
