Full transcript
- 0:00hi everyone welcome back to the
- 0:01blossoming together podcast today we're
- 0:03going to be talking about supervision
- 0:06and some of the requirements that are
- 0:08needed let's go right into the
- 0:09objectives beautiful our first objective
- 0:12today is understanding and implementing
- 0:14effective supervision practices um and
- 0:16we're going to be relating to the task
- 0:18list items task H1 H2 and H3 the second
- 0:23objective is enhancing training
- 0:25competence through feedback and skill
- 0:27development and this relates Bast to
- 0:29task lless A5 H4
- 0:33H6 all right so I feel like this is one
- 0:37of those topics where people are always
- 0:39like stuck talking about like cuz I feel
- 0:42like we're always getting updates right
- 0:44yeah the BB is changing things like I
- 0:46get the emails of like okay these are
- 0:47the upcoming changes and even though I
- 0:50think everyone is subscribed to the
- 0:52emails and they get it there's always
- 0:54this like I don't know why but there's
- 0:56always this like chaos of like or yeah
- 1:00so we kind of want to just touch on even
- 1:02us like we felt like we learned a lot
- 1:04when we going through the information
- 1:05was a good reminder and refresher for us
- 1:07so we kind to touch on it make sure
- 1:08everyone else also knew some of this
- 1:10information yes it sounds great all
- 1:13right so first things first we're going
- 1:14to do something really simple wanted to
- 1:16go over just what two types of fieldwork
- 1:18experiences there are so we have
- 1:19supervised fieldwork which you need
- 1:222,000 fieldwork hours for and then we
- 1:24have concentrated supervised field work
- 1:26where you need, 1500 hours yep um and
- 1:30then so kind of with that you also need
- 1:33so with the 2,000 fieldwork hours if
- 1:35you're doing supervised fieldwork you
- 1:37also need 5% of direct supervision and
- 1:40then another big difference is for
- 1:41concentrated supervis fieldwork so
- 1:43that's the 1500 hours you need 10%
- 1:46supervision so that's why the hours are
- 1:48reduced because you're getting a little
- 1:50bit more of that like one to one time
- 1:52with your bcba directly supervising you
- 1:54and that makes sense what did you have
- 1:56when you were in or did was this before
- 1:58this this changed right this changed so
- 2:00I did technically like now it would be
- 2:02considered the supervised fieldwork but
- 2:04at my time it was
- 2:061,500 hours um and then the concentrated
- 2:10fieldwork was only 750 so I had a few
- 2:12wow imagine I know I'm like oh my gosh
- 2:14that's nothing I did the concentrated uh
- 2:17supervised field workor and that was
- 2:19when it was concentrated supervised
- 2:20field and it just changed I think it was
- 2:23the 1500 and you get 10% yep it had just
- 2:26changed can you tell me a little bit
- 2:27about how you felt like with the
- 2:29concentrated like a little bit less
- 2:30hours but with more supervision with
- 2:32your supervisor I guess how did that go
- 2:35so honestly I felt like I didn't know
- 2:37notice because our bcbas where I was I
- 2:40did my field work were always
- 2:41supervising at that percentage or more
- 2:44no matter what so I was hitting the
- 2:46hours consistently no matter what I
- 2:48think because I was one of the first
- 2:50students here we had started off
- 2:52actually as
- 2:54supervised hours and then once we were
- 2:57looking at like our numbers we were like
- 2:58wow we're hitting this much every month
- 3:01why don't we change it and that's when
- 3:03we realized hey like all of our students
- 3:05here could do this because our BCBS are
- 3:08providing that much
- 3:09supervision so with mine my experience
- 3:12it was good like I I've talked about my
- 3:14supervis like experience often I had a
- 3:17good experience cuz I made it what I
- 3:18wanted it to be but I did get that like
- 3:21Less Direct supervision but I wouldn't
- 3:22have known the difference cuz their
- 3:24option wasn't available to me like at my
- 3:26place so I didn't you didn't know did
- 3:28you feel when did you realize what the
- 3:30difference was was it when you came here
- 3:32um a little bit when I came here but
- 3:34mostly when I was talking to my
- 3:35classmates like I had a few classmates
- 3:37who the program that I did they paired
- 3:39with a fieldwork site and they were all
- 3:41doing like the 750 hours with the
- 3:43Intensive supervision and I was like oh
- 3:45you're getting that much like time per
- 3:47week like um currently like when I
- 3:49supervise my students I meet with them
- 3:51weekly but when I was a supervis I was
- 3:53only getting um I think like one direct
- 3:56meeting um a month and then the rest of
- 3:58my supervised time was with direct
- 4:00clients so it just didn't feel like at
- 4:02looking back I was like okay it might
- 4:04not have been as personal like we didn't
- 4:05have as much time to get the personal
- 4:06like note in it and I had the weekly
- 4:08meetings did yeah we had the weekly
- 4:10meetings and I did feel like it's a very
- 4:12personal relationship and I we're going
- 4:15to touch on it a little more later I
- 4:16know but I had multiple supervis not
- 4:19just one throughout the whole experience
- 4:21so I had two main ones that I was like
- 4:23meeting with all the time and then I had
- 4:26different ones that were supervising me
- 4:28with my clients as well I really like
- 4:30that and something that we've like
- 4:31started incorporating now too is like
- 4:33changing up the supervisor throughout
- 4:35the experience so that that supervis Z
- 4:39gets more um I guess just like a better
- 4:42understanding of how different bcbas do
- 4:44things like not everyone every bcba is
- 4:46going to complete their tasks the same
- 4:48way right and I agree and I also feel
- 4:50like well I when I was in that position
- 4:52I felt like oh like I picked different
- 4:54things up for each from each person that
- 4:57I don't think I would have been able to
- 4:58like pick up if I were didn't have that
- 5:01experience or I would have been I don't
- 5:02know maybe molded like the first person
- 5:05but I had an experience and I was able
- 5:07to pick and choose also like I like this
- 5:09quality from this supervisor and I like
- 5:11this quality from this supervisor and
- 5:13maybe I don't like this quality which
- 5:15you know not to those people don't hate
- 5:16their supervisors but you know if you
- 5:18have multiple you could pick I hear that
- 5:20too skills from other people yeah or be
- 5:22like learn like I don't like how people
- 5:24do that or I don't want to be bcba that
- 5:26does that cuz you saw that one does it
- 5:27this way and one doesn't right and you
- 5:29figur out and Yeah I think that's one
- 5:30thing that I didn't get like as a
- 5:33supervis like I didn't realize that I
- 5:35hadn't gotten that I only had one was
- 5:37the person that was meeting with you
- 5:39your one-on-one also the person that was
- 5:41in charge of your direct client or was
- 5:43that different as well yep they were in
- 5:44charge of my direct client so I still
- 5:46had the multiple supervisors and we'll
- 5:48kind of get into what that means a
- 5:49little in a little bit but I still was
- 5:52primarily assigned to her case load so
- 5:55we did it teams so like if I was her
- 5:57supervis I was assigned to her team I
- 5:59had mostly her kiddos and then if I
- 6:01covered other kids with other bcbas they
- 6:03would supervise me and still be able to
- 6:05provide me hours that makes sense that
- 6:07makes sense and I feel like everyone's
- 6:09experience is so unique yeah because I
- 6:11feel like when you go on Facebook or
- 6:13when you reach out to other people you
- 6:14learn that everyone's gone through a
- 6:15different experience they all have and
- 6:17also like the experience of your
- 6:19supervisors is so different than yours
- 6:22where like it gets all meshed together
- 6:24and that's where I feel like a lot of
- 6:24these rules get jumbled up say it's
- 6:26really important for us to like I like
- 6:29when I was we were prepping I was like
- 6:30I'm so glad that I'm getting this
- 6:32refresher to understand like how to best
- 6:34support my supervis I'm like oh yeah
- 6:36this is a requirement like let me make
- 6:37sure that I'm hitting that or even like
- 6:39remember cuz I know some since it
- 6:41changed while you were a student like oh
- 6:43this was different than when I was cuz I
- 6:46feel like that would be in great in my
- 6:47mind yeah sometimes I like use the wrar
- 6:50yeah and I'm like wait a second that's
- 6:51not it so I have my like I have my
- 6:52binder with all my stuff and I like
- 6:54refer to it you know me and my
- 6:56organization something else with like
- 6:58the roles and responsibilities of a
- 6:59supervisor and a supervising that we
- 7:01kind of wanted to touch on and we've
- 7:02mentioned it briefly so there's a
- 7:04student and a supervising bcba the
- 7:06student can also be we've kind of
- 7:08referred to throughout as like a trainee
- 7:10supervis um or student like there are
- 7:12different terms that we might refer to
- 7:14them um and then like supervisor or
- 7:16supervising bcbi I always called my
- 7:19super like the one I met with one-on-one
- 7:21my like my mate I don't know why I just
- 7:23called them that's my main supervisor
- 7:25and then everyone else was like oh I
- 7:26have their clients they're my bcbas yeah
- 7:29that's kind of how I was too like with
- 7:31my main supervisor and then I feel like
- 7:33we're going to get into more like crazy
- 7:35terms cuz we're going to talk about the
- 7:36Consulting supervisor a little bit
- 7:38that's where I feel like that's when I
- 7:39get like super like whoo those are the
- 7:41things that I'm like I wouldn't know
- 7:42unless I keep referring back to my notes
- 7:45um with a supervising bcba they must be
- 7:48an active bcba with no disciplinary like
- 7:51uh sanctions um and they if they're
- 7:53certified for less than a year they
- 7:55require monthly consultation from a
- 7:57qualified Consulting supervisor
- 8:00um and we kind of talked about a little
- 8:01bit about the percentages and stuff too
- 8:03do you want to jump in about the
- 8:04Consulting supervisor a little bit uh
- 8:06the Consulting before we even get there
- 8:08there are also two other people or two
- 8:10other uh licenses that can provide
- 8:13supervision corre yeah this is where
- 8:15it's like yeah I know I I don't know why
- 8:17cuz it was never my experience and even
- 8:19though I've read this multiple times I
- 8:22was like huh I never directly
- 8:24encountered this so I didn't realize so
- 8:27something that we learned from looking
- 8:29at the ACB website yesterday was a
- 8:32licensed psychologist is a person a
- 8:34licensed or registered psychologist
- 8:36certified by the American Board of
- 8:37Professional Psychology and behavioral
- 8:39and cognitive psychology who was tested
- 8:42in ABA they can also provide supervision
- 8:46but this is changing so this method ends
- 8:49January 1st 2026 so pretty soon pretty
- 8:52soon but fieldwork obtained before then
- 8:54can be submitted until January 1st 2032
- 8:57okay so it's going to so you have a a
- 8:59very tiny window like if you've started
- 9:01to finish up your hours and get it
- 9:03submitted yeah and I know I know like
- 9:06once the changes happens everyone's
- 9:08going to be like what do we do wait a
- 9:09second yeah and then another one is a
- 9:12verified course sequence instructor so
- 9:14this is an authorized verified course
- 9:16sequence instructor it's kind of like
- 9:18your course instructors maybe at like
- 9:20where you're going to school they can
- 9:21also provide supervision and then no
- 9:24this qualification method ends January
- 9:261st 2026 also but fieldwork obtain
- 9:29before then can be submitted until
- 9:31January 1st 2032 okay so both of those
- 9:34currently are supervisors but they're
- 9:37ending soon and and 2025 is coming up so
- 9:41you got a year kind of a year and a few
- 9:43months and then you can continue to
- 9:45submit by the way today is August what
- 9:5028th August 28th
- 9:532024 yeah so if you're watching this 2
- 9:55years from now but when it airs yeah
- 9:58well when it airs it makes sense but
- 10:00when you watch it 2 years from now
- 10:01please refer to the date okay please go
- 10:04on to the bacb website and look up the
- 10:07qualification oh my gosh I'm dead cuz
- 10:09I'm like wait I just thought of that I
- 10:11was like I know just in case like
- 10:13changes tomorrow Evergreen content it's
- 10:15going to be keep going we love it oh my
- 10:18gosh um getting back to like the roles
- 10:21and responsibilities so we have the
- 10:23supervisor and their traine relationship
- 10:26so some kind of key things to keep in
- 10:29mind when you are getting a supervisor
- 10:31or supervising a like candidate the
- 10:34supervisors cannot be related to
- 10:37subordinate to employed by or in a
- 10:39multiple relationship with the trainee
- 10:42during their field work experience which
- 10:43makes total sense employment though does
- 10:46not include being compensated like
- 10:48compensating the supervisor for
- 10:50supervising like requirements so this is
- 10:53kind of break it down cuz we were so
- 10:55confused like people pay for their
- 10:57supervision like especially when they're
- 10:58like remot or near place or living
- 11:02someplace where there aren't supervisors
- 11:03by them we see this all the time yes
- 11:05like we are blessed we are able to get
- 11:06our field workk in house but a lot of
- 11:08people don't have that opportunity so
- 11:09they pay for their supervision what
- 11:11we're talking about which isn't allowed
- 11:14is say you got someone they own the
- 11:16clinic yeah and then they need
- 11:19supervision they end up like wanting to
- 11:20become a bcba so then they want yeah
- 11:22supervis of their BCBS that are working
- 11:25for them to do it correct y exactly and
- 11:28I'm like chances of that I feel like are
- 11:30pretty slim but you never know keep in
- 11:32mind mighten that's why it's in there
- 11:35I'm sure it had to have
- 11:37honestly all right so let's go into the
- 11:41multiple supervisors and settings yes so
- 11:44uh we and also like everyone else
- 11:46encourages trainees to have multiple
- 11:49supervisors across various settings I
- 11:51know it's not always ideal to leave the
- 11:53place you're working at but you know try
- 11:55to get experience with different clients
- 11:58different experiences like type of
- 12:01fieldwork you're getting like you want a
- 12:03very like yeah a broad experience you
- 12:06want to experience a lot of different
- 12:07things so that you are familiar and
- 12:09learn different things that you want to
- 12:11incorporate as a BP and then if you are
- 12:12comfortable it's okay to go out and seek
- 12:15different experiences like if you want
- 12:16to work in a school work in a school
- 12:18then work in a clinic try it in home
- 12:21insurance yeah do insurance like all of
- 12:23those experiences will just make you a
- 12:24better bcba and then you'll get
- 12:26different experiences from all your
- 12:28supervisors as well yeah and then you'll
- 12:31also hopefully have like the competency
- 12:33to like provide that to trainees going
- 12:35forward as well if you were in that spot
- 12:37right so we have um like the individual
- 12:40supervisors so the individual supervisor
- 12:43um is like they ensure that all
- 12:45fieldwork requirements are met maintain
- 12:47a clear um supervision contract and
- 12:50obtain written permission to access
- 12:52client information and then the
- 12:53supervisor must sign off on all relevant
- 12:56documentation confirming that all
- 12:57fieldwork requirements were fulfilled
- 13:00and kind of talking about this
- 13:01documentation just while it's like on
- 13:03our mind you have to keep your
- 13:05documentation from like anything
- 13:07relating to like your bcba role for
- 13:09seven years keep it do not keep I put
- 13:12mine in a box at home hopefully yeah and
- 13:15this Happ it nothing happens it's like
- 13:17in my like I have my little file drawer
- 13:19um it's just to ensure that like the
- 13:21quality of care you have everything you
- 13:22need and then if you are audited by the
- 13:25bacb you really want these documents
- 13:27it's important to maintain corre correct
- 13:29and then I also had this contract I know
- 13:32when you first get into it like
- 13:33contracts seem a little confusing yeah
- 13:36it's hard but go out research some if
- 13:38you're the superv like the supervisor
- 13:41and this is your first time creating one
- 13:44and no one else around you has like do
- 13:46some research look up what could be in
- 13:48there I feel like we've seen this like
- 13:50Revis so many times
- 13:52throughout our experiences and our times
- 13:55where like I've try I'm thinking of like
- 13:57things that have come up like at a point
- 13:59we added like must maintain like was it
- 14:02a grade point or something like it was
- 14:04um no it was like their standard um what
- 14:07is it like their standard as an employee
- 14:09so they had to like have good standing
- 14:11with us in order to be a
- 14:13supervis um like they couldn't have
- 14:15certain time like if they called out
- 14:17often we just wanted to make sure that
- 14:19they were a quality candidate to be
- 14:21receiving supervision hours from us and
- 14:23I think also remembering you can go back
- 14:24and change it but everyone else needs to
- 14:26everyone else all parties need to sign
- 14:28the all parties need to sign the form
- 14:30and then um within the bcba handbook it
- 14:32does know what is required specifically
- 14:35within the contract so when you are
- 14:37completing your contracts um if it's the
- 14:39first one make sure first to refer to
- 14:41the bcba handbook and then in addition
- 14:43to that add what you feel may be
- 14:45necessary got it yeah all right and then
- 14:50also there can be multiple supervisors
- 14:52at one organization we've touched on
- 14:53this I said it's probably a good idea to
- 14:56get that experience but remember that
- 14:59organizations can coordinate multiple
- 15:01supervisors for a trainee so this
- 15:04requires a well organized supervision
- 15:05contract listing all of Supervisors
- 15:08roles and responsibilities you can find
- 15:10this for I believe like right on the
- 15:11website as well yep it's right there
- 15:13within the same ones and then all
- 15:15supervision must be related to client
- 15:17programming and supervisors must have
- 15:19written permission to access client
- 15:21information again so I only had one like
- 15:25every time it was one main did you ever
- 15:27have more than no you didn't either I
- 15:29had yeah I had one main that I started
- 15:31she left and then I had the my second
- 15:33main supervisor who did the majority of
- 15:35mine and then because I was at a clinic
- 15:38like they were creating their field work
- 15:40program as I was in it so in the
- 15:42beginning it was like okay yeah you have
- 15:44your person you're one but then we added
- 15:46the multiple and then we went and got
- 15:48contract signed by every bcba that was
- 15:51at Center so that we were able to like
- 15:53say my be I I wanted experience with
- 15:57like an FBA or something and I bcba
- 16:00didn't have that like they didn't have a
- 16:02client I could do it with or they didn't
- 16:03need it yet they could reach out to the
- 16:05other BCBS and say like hey my student
- 16:07wants experience with this so they were
- 16:09also I was able to meet with that person
- 16:11go over it with them okay I really like
- 16:14that was there anything about having
- 16:15multiple supervisors that you found
- 16:17challenging like tricky to navigate or
- 16:19for a supervisor to like keep in mind I
- 16:22think what was hard for me was I wanted
- 16:25to please each one yeah and like try to
- 16:28figure out like well my person the
- 16:30person I'm used to would have approved
- 16:32this but say say you were my supervisor
- 16:35like Ken likes like this so being
- 16:38confident like the skills you are
- 16:39learning like you are still your own
- 16:41person it's okay like your learning
- 16:43skills try to figure out your the way
- 16:45you want to do things there to and like
- 16:46talk about it and collaborate and not so
- 16:49much be like I want to fit their mold so
- 16:50I'm going to do it this way yeah I wish
- 16:52I did that I yeah I think that honestly
- 16:54that's really tricky like as the
- 16:56supervis something that I'm finding not
- 16:59um necessarily but like as a supervisor
- 17:02in a area where we have multiple
- 17:04supervisors for students um is the
- 17:07documentation for like the contract oh
- 17:09everyone's little yeah so if you are a
- 17:12supervisor like one of the multiple
- 17:13supervisors you may have your one
- 17:15student or two students but then you're
- 17:16still supervising any candidate that is
- 17:18at your company or within your practice
- 17:22um what's hard is in order to supervise
- 17:24them each of the multiple supervisors
- 17:26have to have the contract um so it's on
- 17:28me to like make sure be like okay before
- 17:30I like or before say ustra has a
- 17:33supervis before ustra signs off on the
- 17:35supervis hours Kiren has to make sure
- 17:38she has a contract with the supervis
- 17:40before she can count those hours I don't
- 17:41think I've been there long like I I was
- 17:44encountered that i' never encountered
- 17:45that I just came off like the brand new
- 17:49bcba status where I needed a Consulting
- 17:51supervisor so I haven't had to like yeah
- 17:53go through that yeah so that is
- 17:54something that I'm like remembering it's
- 17:56like okay I need to make sure and we
- 17:58really lucky because the one remember
- 18:00the main supervisor is the one that ends
- 18:02up signing that month the last
- 18:04verification your final verification
- 18:05form and typically your monthly
- 18:07verification forms as well but in order
- 18:10to have counted your supervision with
- 18:12other supervisors you still have to have
- 18:14a contract with them and this was
- 18:15confusing I think when we were signing
- 18:17off on my ours at the end we were like
- 18:18does everyone sign it who is doing what
- 18:21cuz I had like eight yeah cuz we're
- 18:23eight at our something like does eight
- 18:24people sign this and then after digging
- 18:26we're like no I do want to refer back to
- 18:29one of our previous episodes we had
- 18:31Taylor Ross and kosai Zia oh my gosh I
- 18:35pronounce it
- 18:36incorrectly this is sad Kai was my
- 18:38supervisor Kai we love you Kai how do
- 18:40you say your last name but please go
- 18:43back and watch that episode cuz we did
- 18:45discuss how we've kind of enhanced this
- 18:48experience within our setting we
- 18:50established having like a fieldwork
- 18:52coordinator so that person kind of
- 18:54organizes and makes sure all of the
- 18:55students have contracts they make sure
- 18:58that assign ments with the bcba and the
- 19:00supervises is like it's I don't know
- 19:02going to work so it's effective
- 19:05evidence-based they're getting the
- 19:06experience that they need they're
- 19:07learning their soft skills they're
- 19:09learning everything from the task list
- 19:11there's a lot on there and I feel like a
- 19:13hard a thing we've learned or people
- 19:16have reported to us is the experience
- 19:18they get is usually just what the bcba
- 19:20is going through
- 19:22versus like the big round like a
- 19:25well-rounded experience is what I'm
- 19:26trying to say they don't get the
- 19:27well-rounded experience but they kind of
- 19:29get whatever is on their bcb's case load
- 19:31yeah which can be hard it's hard or like
- 19:33it might not be a good fit you know so
- 19:35it's just and also as like the as like
- 19:36the BCB I've always struggled with like
- 19:39what like this what do I give them to do
- 19:41sure you know like in my head is like I
- 19:43got these programs for them to write and
- 19:45it's like we don't want to just be
- 19:46giving program writing but it's like
- 19:47those are what's going to assist us most
- 19:49so it's like finding that's where you
- 19:50get in a funk I feel like too people get
- 19:52in a funk they're like well we need this
- 19:53stuff done we got a student yeah exactly
- 19:56let have them do this instead yes so we
- 19:59have a fieldwork coordinator who helps
- 20:00organize and like maintain all of the
- 20:02requirements and things like that I
- 20:04wanted to pause quickly for our first
- 20:06code word code word one for your CEUs is
- 20:10student all right so transitioning in we
- 20:14kind discuss the Consulting supervisor
- 20:16rule yeah and then consultation for
- 20:19newer bcbas this is if you're a bcba
- 20:22that's certified for less than a less
- 20:25than one year so if you're a bcba
- 20:27certified for less than one year need to
- 20:29have a Consulting supervisor to take any
- 20:32students yes and this supervisor they
- 20:34are required to be um they do monthly
- 20:37consultation and they have to be
- 20:39certified as a bcba for over five years
- 20:43um and then their focus areas so what
- 20:46you're going to be focusing on during
- 20:47these monthly meetings is we want to
- 20:49make sure there's ethical decision
- 20:51making making happening supervision best
- 20:54practices and then documentation of
- 20:56course feedback and professional growth
- 20:58so the Consulting supervisor is just
- 21:01ensuring that the newer bcba is able to
- 21:05provide that quality experience for the
- 21:07supervis to ensure that they are getting
- 21:09the best experience that they can and
- 21:10then because one thing I was I was the
- 21:13person that needed a Consulting
- 21:14supervisor so one part of my experience
- 21:17that I enjoyed about this was because we
- 21:18had a fieldwork coordinator they had a
- 21:21checklist that was made for the newer
- 21:23bcba to kind of go through all of this
- 21:25to make sure they even had those skills
- 21:27are they even you know it wasn't like oh
- 21:29we need someone so here's a Consulting
- 21:30supervisor and you take on a student it
- 21:33was like is this person really ready and
- 21:35then we can provide them with the
- 21:36support so they had like a checklist
- 21:38essentially of everything the student
- 21:40would need to learn could I even go
- 21:42through that with them and then if there
- 21:44wasn't we went through it it was just
- 21:46kind of like they they checked to make
- 21:48sure I knew what I was doing they like
- 21:50checked in and something kind of going
- 21:52on that and this is just like a side
- 21:54personal note if you are a new bcba um I
- 21:58want you to feel confident in yourself
- 22:00to like know if you're ready or not
- 22:02ready to take on a student you never you
- 22:05should never have to take on a student
- 22:07if you don't feel like you are going to
- 22:08be able to provide them their quality
- 22:10experience so if you and this is why I
- 22:12feel like the rule was created I don't I
- 22:14don't know why but I have a feeling
- 22:17person I do not know why they decided to
- 22:19do this I didn't go look that up
- 22:21personal take hot take but I have a
- 22:24feeling is because I there was this
- 22:26trend where new like brand knew bcbas
- 22:29were taking on students and they didn't
- 22:30even know what they were doing yet
- 22:31they're still learning and I remember
- 22:33being a brand new bcba I was like oh my
- 22:34God I just need to navigate and figure
- 22:35out what I'm doing first mhm and then so
- 22:38this is why it's here it's for a good
- 22:40reason so and if you're in the place
- 22:42where you're like wow I don't want to be
- 22:43supervised by someone it's okay like
- 22:46take it yeah it is there's nothing wrong
- 22:48with it yes we all need mentorship even
- 22:50as like bcbas who have been experienced
- 22:52for more than a year like I still seek
- 22:54guidance from like Consulting bcbas
- 22:56that's really important and honestly the
- 22:58let's go right into the format the
- 22:59format of it isn't too bad it's a
- 23:01one-on-one meeting where you're
- 23:02reviewing the practices in case specific
- 23:05support so remember my
- 23:07supervisor had pretty much we had like a
- 23:09checklist like a little just like if you
- 23:12were a student getting supervision we
- 23:14had documentation that we also have to
- 23:16keep for S years all of your
- 23:19documentation years just just like
- 23:21before but it had to be for at least 1
- 23:24hour per month and then this had to
- 23:26continue until I hit my one year mark
- 23:28okay then we also had a contract yeah
- 23:31and then it's was actually was you don't
- 23:34have to but we had one we had to it's
- 23:36recommended by the bacb but it's not
- 23:39this is where people get confused like
- 23:41well I had one and then the purpose of
- 23:44it was really like the purpose of our
- 23:45meeting was to guide enhance my the
- 23:47supervision quality that I was providing
- 23:50not that I was getting that I was
- 23:52providing to my students and then the
- 23:54content really was basic strategies
- 23:57problem solving and ref finding any like
- 23:59task that I needed or wanted to give to
- 24:01my students so a lot of it would be like
- 24:03well let me give we can't talk about
- 24:06Johnny he's a client like we need a fake
- 24:08like fake student name um who is our
- 24:11fake student Joey no I don't like the J
- 24:13let's just name it
- 24:15Rachel Rachel we have Rachel she's our
- 24:18student and okay that's my student and
- 24:20then say you're my Consulting supervisor
- 24:22so in our meetings I would go and would
- 24:24be like hey well Rachel has been sharing
- 24:27she doesn't feel ID in her softt skills
- 24:31I don't know what I can do for her or
- 24:33and then maybe you would give me some
- 24:35ideas like so we would I would meet with
- 24:38you and I would say you know here are
- 24:39some things that you can do to build her
- 24:41soft skills before doing this I would
- 24:43talk about this in your meetings right
- 24:45and then also sometimes I didn't know
- 24:47need like support or I felt like I knew
- 24:49what I was doing so I just be like hey
- 24:50Kristen Rachel did such a great job
- 24:53training one of our new hires today I
- 24:56told her she's doing great and I think
- 24:58she's ready for the next everything was
- 25:00Behavior analytic in nature yep and then
- 25:02she's ready for her next assignment and
- 25:04then we would go over that yeah so
- 25:06sometimes it was just updates and like
- 25:07making sure that I was giving like
- 25:10proper or quality supervision sometimes
- 25:12I was seeking support I was going to say
- 25:14ensuring that you're supported it's
- 25:16really the main honestly I really liked
- 25:18my meetings I know I'm like dang I want
- 25:20to be new again I miss
- 25:22those am I oh yeah I don't am I missing
- 25:25anything no you're not missing anything
- 25:26you got like the main content um there's
- 25:28like we talked a little bit about the
- 25:30responsibilities of the Consulting
- 25:31supervisor themselves so guidance they
- 25:34again Provide support and ensure
- 25:36adherence to the bacb code of ethics
- 25:38that's really number one um and then
- 25:40liability they're not responsible for
- 25:42the new supervisor's work but they must
- 25:44ensure ethical conduct so if I'm your
- 25:48Consulting supervisor it's not on me
- 25:51like if you are doing unethical
- 25:54practices but it's on me to ensure like
- 25:56that you learn the ethical
- 25:58practices to help your supervis e no
- 26:02youer there's a couple more things that
- 26:03I wanted to mention regarding like the
- 26:05structure of the Consulting supervisor's
- 26:08role with the bcba that's been a bcba
- 26:11for less than a year you didn't forget
- 26:12anything we just have a lot of notes on
- 26:13this topic so the number one thing and
- 26:15these are just uh recommendations from
- 26:17the bacb not necessarily requirements
- 26:20but the uh Consulting bcba is
- 26:23responsible for ensuring that the um
- 26:26that there's a supervision curriculum
- 26:27followed by the new bcba um and you also
- 26:31as the Consulting bcba are responsible
- 26:33for ensuring that that bcba is providing
- 26:35effective supervision to their candidate
- 26:37we kind of touched on that but that is
- 26:38like one of the number one things you
- 26:39want to make sure it's an effective
- 26:41relationship and then finally as a new
- 26:44bcba it's really hard to like be
- 26:45organized and have time management
- 26:46skills so the Consulting bcba will help
- 26:49the new bcba develop those skills to Be
- 26:51an Effective supervisor and I know we
- 26:54touched on this I just wanted to talk
- 26:55about it a little bit more we talked
- 26:56about the documentation that we need to
- 26:59keep for 7 years between the new vcba
- 27:02and the Consulting supervisor but I had
- 27:05both so I had like a little sheet that
- 27:08we kept all our notes on with every
- 27:10single detail of what we talked about
- 27:12and then also what's required required
- 27:14of you is I had to pull it up because I
- 27:17did not fit it onto my note card is it's
- 27:19on the bacb website you'll find it it's
- 27:22the consultating supervision supervision
- 27:24documentation so really the name of the
- 27:26new bcba the new supervisor
- 27:29Certification Number the date they were
- 27:30certified because remember they have to
- 27:32be a bcba for 5 years and then on there
- 27:37it's like the month and year that you
- 27:38met because you have to meet every month
- 27:41and then if fieldwork hours are provided
- 27:43by the new supervisor yes or no and then
- 27:46just your name and the Certification
- 27:48Number And I think you sign yep you sign
- 27:51right there's a little r right under
- 27:53there so you miss it you might think
- 27:54it's at the bottom but yes don't forget
- 27:56to sign it and then this is typically
- 27:58the responsibility of the Consulting
- 28:00supervisor to maintain this
- 28:01documentation it's on both of you to
- 28:03have it but typically the Consulting
- 28:05supervisor will like start it and help
- 28:07you like keep up with it as a new
- 28:09supervisor cool so let's get into it so
- 28:13say you're not a new one you've been a
- 28:15bcba for more than a year you are
- 28:17qualified what's still required of you
- 28:20you had to have completed the
- 28:21supervision course so both of them had
- 28:24to do right yes so both so these
- 28:26required these are required of yeah both
- 28:29the not a new bcba so bcba for more than
- 28:33a year and then a bcba of a year or less
- 28:35so they have to complete the bacb a hour
- 28:38supervision course there are a few
- 28:40different ones that you can find online
- 28:42some provide CEUs some don't but you
- 28:44have to complete that before being a
- 28:47supervisor you also have to do your
- 28:50ongoing ceu so you must fulfill ongoing
- 28:52supervision ceu requirements we talk
- 28:55about this often um and then your
- 28:57compliance you cannot have disciplinary
- 28:59sanctions you must have prior
- 29:01supervisory experience as well and then
- 29:03if you don't get some out yes tell
- 29:06someone make sure you're confident in it
- 29:08this is when you seek out like a
- 29:09Consulting supervisor that's if you're
- 29:11over a year and you've never done
- 29:13supervision yes you have never
- 29:14supervised and had any experience with
- 29:16that the documentation proficient in
- 29:18session documentation and fieldwork
- 29:21management so some of these are self uh
- 29:23assessed skills you have to know like
- 29:25within yourself are you able to provide
- 29:28proficient documentation of your
- 29:29sessions that are happening with your
- 29:31clients um and then like your fieldwork
- 29:33management can you hand you have to do
- 29:34it for someone else yeah this is your
- 29:36job it's your responsibility you are
- 29:38responsible for your supervis y um and
- 29:40then resources access to and navigation
- 29:43of supervision resources um a lot of
- 29:46these are found within the bacb website
- 29:48they have a lot of resources for us use
- 29:50those at your discretion all right and
- 29:53then professional growth continuous
- 29:55engagement and professional development
- 29:57keep up with your CEUs keep up with
- 29:58what's going on the field anything
- 30:00that's up keep up to date with what's
- 30:01going on yes it's important so kind of
- 30:04just a question how have you I know we
- 30:07have we have the silly little podcast so
- 30:09we just kidding but we we're trying to
- 30:11maintain our growth are there any other
- 30:14things that you've done as a supervisor
- 30:16or as a bcba to help you grow yeah
- 30:20something that especially when I was in
- 30:21new bcba cuz I I love research research
- 30:25is like my thing I like to keep up with
- 30:26it something that I was doing when I was
- 30:28just wanting to know like more and more
- 30:30about like what practices were happening
- 30:32what changes were happening in the field
- 30:33is every 2 weeks I would read like an
- 30:36article from the bacb like you know how
- 30:38on the bacb website on your portal you
- 30:40can access like articles and resources I
- 30:42would find the new ones that are up to
- 30:44date and I would try and read one every
- 30:46two weeks and just like take notes on it
- 30:48and keep up to date that way as well as
- 30:50obviously like my main C and things like
- 30:52that see for that the response effort is
- 30:55too high for me I can't I can't go
- 30:57through two or three to get on first of
- 30:59all the bacb website I talk it's super
- 31:01slow so it takes me forever to get there
- 31:03then to go on there and then get on
- 31:05another website and then write in
- 31:06keywords to find an article is really
- 31:08hard for me something that I've started
- 31:10to do is I've followed reputable
- 31:12accounts on social media that do a
- 31:16really good job of finding those
- 31:17articles so that's a little bit easier
- 31:19for me to access them or they're
- 31:21discussing these things so I'm able to
- 31:23find it there and then I can get to what
- 31:25I need to see I wish I knew the
- 31:27account's name there's I it's like I
- 31:29think it's like melanni I don't know her
- 31:31name on Instagram I wish maybe we will
- 31:33tag it in the description she would
- 31:35break down articles monthly like she
- 31:37would do like a live where she would
- 31:39like talk about articles that she's read
- 31:41and she would break it down monthly and
- 31:42like have like a little live where you
- 31:44could like talk in the chat and stuff
- 31:45and I really like that too I feel like
- 31:47this is a little bit newer where there
- 31:48weren't this many accounts before post
- 31:51like when I was a student I don't think
- 31:53there were that many accounts that I
- 31:54could follow and get that felt reputable
- 31:56yeah that felt there were a lot of like
- 31:58like
- 31:59fun accounts but not so much providing
- 32:02education I feel like especially now in
- 32:03like LinkedIn I can go on every morning
- 32:06on LinkedIn I'll learn one new thing or
- 32:07I'll read one new thing about something
- 32:09that's happening yeah I agree I really
- 32:11love that we have like so many resources
- 32:13now social media makes us a little
- 32:16easier to access that information it
- 32:18does this is like the sad part so
- 32:20there's like some things that we the
- 32:21negativity we have to talk about the
- 32:23consequences of non-compliance with
- 32:25these requirements um there would be
- 32:27discipline actions if you don't meet
- 32:29these requirements it may lead to
- 32:31certification restrictions you could
- 32:33lose your certification you might not be
- 32:34able to supervise you might have like
- 32:36practice restrictions or a violation or
- 32:39a violation um and then reporting so
- 32:42non-compliance may also result in the
- 32:44violation notice yeah so and then just
- 32:47remember they're auditing all the time
- 32:50you don't know you could be pulled in an
- 32:52audit you could be the next week yep
- 32:54yeah they're probably watching this like
- 32:55look to see who watched it
- 32:58exactly so yeah just really stay up to
- 33:00date know the changes that are occurring
- 33:03cuz there are often changes like
- 33:05requirements and things that change very
- 33:06very frequently so and I know this is
- 33:08the part where I feel like act like all
- 33:10jokes said I feel very anxious about
- 33:12sometimes oh my gosh makes me so nerv
- 33:13it's changed so much even since I was a
- 33:16student not that like a lot it's like
- 33:18small little there small little details
- 33:20but then I know what my supervisor's
- 33:24experience was and then I know what my
- 33:25co-workers experiences were and I feel
- 33:28sometimes it just gets jumbled gets lost
- 33:29as to like what is the like effective
- 33:31real way yeah and then also we'll talk
- 33:36about this one later I think this one's
- 33:37a good story for later okay I'll save it
- 33:40stay tuned so I want to also okay now
- 33:43you know what the requirements are for
- 33:45yourself if you're the supervisor and
- 33:47maybe if you're the student some
- 33:49requirements you should look for in your
- 33:51supervisor the different types of
- 33:52supervisors there are so we have
- 33:54multiple
- 33:55supervisors and might missing multiple
- 33:58supervisors the single supervisor um
- 34:02supervisors that are have been less than
- 34:04one year more than one year um and then
- 34:06you're supervis e yep also known as
- 34:08student all right yeah so kind of went
- 34:11over everything I don't think we're
- 34:12missing anything yet might hit some more
- 34:14things later on but let's go let's shift
- 34:17gears a little bit and let's start
- 34:18talking about what another thing that
- 34:20caused me a lot of anxiety is like once
- 34:22I had my first student like what do I do
- 34:25now like oh my God I'm assigned a
- 34:27student I know you have your Consulting
- 34:28supervisor but you know try to get your
- 34:31gears still independent I'm like I want
- 34:33to be an independent Queen okay yeah so
- 34:35let's start thinking about what you
- 34:36should have ready things you should
- 34:38require your student to have for their
- 34:41next meeting yeah so my first meeting
- 34:44with my students is really about setting
- 34:46the expectations of like our
- 34:48relationship their role as my student
- 34:50and what that's going to look like for
- 34:52them so at my first meeting I always
- 34:54make sure that one we have our contract
- 34:56signed um and then I discuss with them
- 34:59like the requirements of your monthly
- 35:00verification form so each month you need
- 35:03to sign your monthly verification form I
- 35:04tell them about it um and I always like
- 35:07I'm kind of I'm trying to build
- 35:08independence with them as well so I let
- 35:10them know I'm like it's on you to fill
- 35:13out your monthly verification form and
- 35:14remember seek out yeah I'm not going to
- 35:16seek it out I'm not going to be able to
- 35:17remember that this one's on you and they
- 35:19know to bring it to me and then it's
- 35:20within the 30 days so like at the end
- 35:23say I'm signing a monthly verification
- 35:25form for June you have 30 days at after
- 35:28the end of June so you can get it signed
- 35:29by July 31st or 30th whatever the last
- 35:32day is um so I always discuss that with
- 35:35them I get a contract signed um and then
- 35:38I let them know like what I would expect
- 35:42of them like when bringing things to all
- 35:45future meetings so I always ask I set up
- 35:48like we have our meeting notes and I'm
- 35:49like you need to bring an agenda and I
- 35:50will bring an agenda just so that again
- 35:53I'm building like responsibility on them
- 35:54their independence they're learning um
- 35:57like how to host a meeting my supervisor
- 35:59also did this me where I had like the
- 36:01autonomy of like picking what to add to
- 36:04the agenda which I felt like was very
- 36:05helpful like anything I thought of
- 36:07during my like sessions I was able to
- 36:09add when I had my first student I
- 36:12decided to do the same thing yeah one
- 36:14thing that you know I did set the about
- 36:17I did tell them this is what I wanted
- 36:19what was happening is they were
- 36:20forgetting to fill it out not doing it
- 36:22and then we were coming yeah so I was
- 36:24coming in with the meeting with a lot of
- 36:25ideas to talk about but they it right
- 36:29like reevaluating like hey like if you
- 36:30don't do this yeah it's not going to be
- 36:33like this well-rounded experience and
- 36:36yeah in this meeting too like I always
- 36:37schedule it in an hour because it's a
- 36:38lot to talk about and like I'm trying to
- 36:40build rapport with them too I've
- 36:41probably trying to be mean like this is
- 36:43everything I expect of you but also
- 36:45trying to like like what's your style
- 36:47this is my style exactly like learning
- 36:49like how they receive feedback best and
- 36:50things like that but at this meeting I'm
- 36:52telling them I'm like your super visy
- 36:55experience is going to be what you make
- 36:57so it's it can be the most F like a
- 37:00scare tactic too a little bit because
- 37:03you know we're still we're doing we're
- 37:04doing our jobs too like make if they
- 37:06aren't thinking about seeking we're
- 37:08still going to provide them with that
- 37:10experience exactly but you should start
- 37:13looking into what you want yes so when I
- 37:14have this conversation I always tell
- 37:16them so I'm like it's going to be what
- 37:17you make it so but I do have um we have
- 37:20our oh my gosh what did we call it
- 37:22earlier it's like the checklist yeah
- 37:24it's kind of a checklist like a baseline
- 37:26skills and your check list so I have
- 37:28this and they have access to this too
- 37:30within their like practicum folder so
- 37:32they know what opportunities are
- 37:34available to them and we break it down I
- 37:36think we'll probably talk about this
- 37:37later we break it down in levels so
- 37:39these are this is what you should
- 37:40accomplish within your first 500 hours
- 37:42these are the it's not crazy stuff it's
- 37:45very I wonder if we can link it later
- 37:48yeah it's very simple stuff like your
- 37:50first couple months this is what you
- 37:52need to know and it's nothing crazy
- 37:54we're not asking you to complete an
- 37:55assessment from start to finish simple
- 37:58stuff like can you define reinforce yeah
- 38:01and then like if you don't know it
- 38:02that's okay because now we have Baseline
- 38:04and you know this is something you need
- 38:05to seek out now exactly and these are
- 38:06things that mostly relate to their job
- 38:08as a technician so we start with things
- 38:10that they're going to be doing on their
- 38:11daily basis as a onetoone tech with
- 38:13kiddos and then it like gradually the
- 38:15skills gradually build on there so and
- 38:17by the end the checklist is built so by
- 38:19the end you can be a fully functioning
- 38:21bcva there are some things on the like
- 38:24last 500 hours that I was like I was
- 38:26like oh my gosh I wish I would have done
- 38:28that I think some of them are like has
- 38:29experience with like terminating staff
- 38:31member and I'm like oh my gosh I never
- 38:32did that and then I was in this I worked
- 38:36here while I was a student so this
- 38:38checklist wasn't created until after I
- 38:40was a bcba so I had to do it with my
- 38:43Consulting supervisor so and I was like
- 38:47like wait a minute so I was like are we
- 38:48going to go fire someone who are we
- 38:50seeking out we didn't do that we did
- 38:53role play it though so we can create
- 38:55like not everything is going to happen
- 38:56naturally you might not be able to drive
- 38:59it either sometimes so in those
- 39:00situations we were played yes so kind of
- 39:03like it got off but that's kind of what
- 39:05like my first meeting looks like um do
- 39:08you have like experience with your first
- 39:10meeting of like things that you loved or
- 39:12things you've changed as you've been a
- 39:13bcba for a little
- 39:14while I think just reminding them that
- 39:18we were in their spots yeah is helpful
- 39:21like you know yeah we were students this
- 39:23is what I usually tell them what I liked
- 39:25about my experience and you know I hope
- 39:28to bring that to their experience but
- 39:30you know if there's anything they want
- 39:32like they can also give me feedback that
- 39:34I'm okay with that they can let me know
- 39:36they want something changed I think
- 39:38that's something that we don't
- 39:39necessarily learn in school or it's not
- 39:41like a requirement from the bacb so it's
- 39:43not something that we necessarily Target
- 39:45directly but I think you and I have had
- 39:46the experience to practice like it isn't
- 39:49a safe environment for the supervis to
- 39:51be practicing providing feedback like we
- 39:53are acceptable or accepting feedback in
- 39:55these meetings it's important for us
- 39:57you know I don't think there's anything
- 39:59else we got our contract signed we went
- 40:03over the contract we discussed the
- 40:06monthly supervision forms also what
- 40:09actually I remembered something how
- 40:10we're keeping track of our hours cuz
- 40:12that's a really important thing too yeah
- 40:14along with the monthly superf form we
- 40:17need our hours documented so depending
- 40:21on who you are where you're at some
- 40:23places have their own trackers where
- 40:25their tracking hours they also have the
- 40:26Ripley
- 40:27old famous r that wasn't around when I
- 40:29was a student I'm so jealous they they
- 40:32love it and that's what a lot of my
- 40:33students use I bought one off of like I
- 40:36forget what I bought ABC I don't know
- 40:38one of the websites there was a Tracker
- 40:40when I was a student the bacb had one
- 40:42that we were require and they stopped
- 40:44using and then they stopped like just
- 40:45kiding it wasn't very it was hard so
- 40:49also learned like saying like hey we
- 40:51need to pick
- 40:52one track it and then I also say like
- 40:55along with your monthly verification I
- 40:57want a copy of it so I can see like make
- 40:59sure everything's looking good I cutt
- 41:01mine in my students folder so then when
- 41:02they yeah send me their mvf I'm like
- 41:04okay I need to cross and then I got to
- 41:06be like did I really like did I provide
- 41:08this supervision and did I give you this
- 41:09task or you know just making sure
- 41:11everything is checked and also reminding
- 41:14them if they're choosing their tracker
- 41:16it is their responsibility so this was
- 41:18the funny silly story I thought oh gosh
- 41:20okay tell me oh no there was an incident
- 41:24I don't know if it was here just in my
- 41:25brain okay but there was a student and
- 41:29they had a Tracker that they got from a
- 41:30friend Co I can't remember cooworker
- 41:32friend but essentially tracker didn't
- 41:35work they didn't check it so at the end
- 41:38of all their hours he thought or she
- 41:41thought they were done
- 41:43and oh no they Wen and they W so you
- 41:46like you got to the end and you were
- 41:47like so once like the supervisor I I it
- 41:50wasn't me this this is like a story it
- 41:53happened history history but she checked
- 41:56it or he checked it someone realized
- 41:58that the hours were off and so upset at
- 42:01the supervisor so upset at his
- 42:04friend but like I think after that I
- 42:07learned reminding them it's on you to
- 42:09make sure everything's working smothly
- 42:10you know like we can it's we're going to
- 42:13check it we can troubleshoot it if it's
- 42:14not working I'll help you figure it out
- 42:17but it is not anyone else's these are
- 42:18your hours these are your hours you want
- 42:20your hours tracked please keep up with
- 42:22the requirements oh my God that's
- 42:24hilarious so sad I know it's so sad
- 42:27yeah and so these requirements these
- 42:30These are requirements make sure your
- 42:32tracker works yeah that's I feel like
- 42:35that's something I want to start adding
- 42:36to my it's you're like now on us as
- 42:38super you're like okay this is on my
- 42:39supervisor now I know that sometimes
- 42:41they don't work either we all learn
- 42:43we're learning bcbas do you have any
- 42:45other fieldwork requirements that you
- 42:47can think of for myself um that like
- 42:50requirements from the bacb that we
- 42:51should be looking at documentation yeah
- 42:54making sure the hours are met so if
- 42:56you're supervised you're hitting the do
- 43:00you remember the unrestricted restricted
- 43:02numbers yes oh my gosh I know we wanted
- 43:05to do a whole another episode based off
- 43:06of like the re yeah so these are we're
- 43:08going to talk about like brief overview
- 43:10of your role as a supervisor maybe on
- 43:13one of our mines I will touch on like
- 43:15some of those detailed requirements so
- 43:17you got to have the right percentages of
- 43:20restricted unrestricted based off of
- 43:21your fieldwork experience making sure
- 43:24that's up like you know what that is so
- 43:26that's is something you'll probably go
- 43:27over in your contract too make sure it's
- 43:28in your contract so you'll go over all
- 43:31of that H contract documentation number
- 43:35of hours how they're giving it to you
- 43:39the agenda of the meetings how you're
- 43:41keeping track of that I think we hit it
- 43:42all and if you forget something and you
- 43:45think of something just tell them as
- 43:46soon as you know yes exactly um and then
- 43:49we also wanted to talk about like
- 43:51communication protocols I know you have
- 43:53a lot of experience with this you're
- 43:55very clear at communicating and like
- 43:58so I feel like you like set good
- 43:59standards and expectations so can you
- 44:01touch on that like the communication
- 44:02with your supervis so really just
- 44:04telling I'm hey I'm busy Sunday nights I
- 44:08do not work this is just an example like
- 44:10say I'm busy Sunday nights if you send
- 44:12me all your assignments or you're asking
- 44:14me for assignments on the weekend cuz
- 44:16you're free that day I'm not going to
- 44:19respond to you probably not going to
- 44:20respond to you please contact me for
- 44:23these times just reminding them like hey
- 44:25I'm a person you know I'm here I usually
- 44:27am here for emergencies and anything you
- 44:30may need I'm also a person I'm
- 44:32compassionate but but you're also trying
- 44:34to set your firm Bound for yourself and
- 44:36I feel like this one is like a little
- 44:38tricky cuz it's happened where people
- 44:40have reached out like hey like yeah you
- 44:43know students especially in the
- 44:43beginning are free on the weekends after
- 44:45because they got school all yeah and
- 44:46they're doing their hours on the weekend
- 44:47they're doing everything so on the
- 44:49weekends you're getting a lot of
- 44:50messages like hey can I have an
- 44:51assignment hey finish this do you have
- 44:53anything else I can do but the thing is
- 44:55on Saturday I'm usually out and I don't
- 44:57have my laptop with me so if you're
- 44:59trying to get an assignment I'm probably
- 45:02not going to be able to get you one till
- 45:03later that evening so knowing those
- 45:05boundaries and like having like a time
- 45:06frame something else is like during that
- 45:09communication conversation you want to
- 45:11talk about like when we're assigning
- 45:12things when we're signing things and
- 45:14then the you're like feedback so it's
- 45:16like how does this person receive
- 45:17feedback as a supervisor so this is
- 45:19something I do currently with my
- 45:21supervises I really want to know how
- 45:23they best receive feedback when do they
- 45:25want it do they want it in the moment or
- 45:27after like if I'm doing um direct
- 45:29supervision with a client um but if I'm
- 45:32like providing assignment feedback do
- 45:34they want me to go over the feedback in
- 45:35our meeting do they want me to um over I
- 45:39do a lot of written feedback but I found
- 45:41that some supervises they do best if I
- 45:43describe it to them in person so just
- 45:46having those conversations ahead of time
- 45:48and establishing that so that if you do
- 45:50run into a situation where like somebody
- 45:52might not be receptive to feedback you
- 45:54can troubleshoot if it's like on us as
- 45:56the supervisor did we do something that
- 45:58they don't understand mhm well that's a
- 46:00good one I like that do you have you
- 46:02ever experienced where like a supervisor
- 46:04might not have been receptive to
- 46:05feedback or like it was kind of tricky
- 46:08honestly I I was very lucky with my
- 46:10students I think all of them were very
- 46:12receptive of the feedback but I can
- 46:16think of a situation where my supervisor
- 46:19had to give me feedback oh gosh yeah and
- 46:21it was just like I felt like she did a
- 46:23good job of like doing it but it was
- 46:25like tricky like I feel like just it
- 46:28just hurt but like you know hey like she
- 46:30was very direct and I think she knew
- 46:32that's how I received feedback I liked
- 46:34it in the moment it was very I felt like
- 46:37it was a good way and I felt like I knew
- 46:38how to handle if I had to do it to
- 46:40someone yeah oh you had to learn from
- 46:42that um I want to touch on our code word
- 46:45number two is actually feedback oh okay
- 46:48so has any have you actually had to
- 46:51provide anyone feedback like that um I'm
- 46:54trying to think of any like direct
- 46:55feedback that might have like not been
- 46:57re maybe received negatively or felt
- 46:59harsh I'm really trying to or maybe I
- 47:02was harsh and I just didn't know I hope
- 47:04God what if we're too direct I actually
- 47:07do have okay going with feedback this
- 47:09wasn't one of my direct supervises but
- 47:10it's one of the um students that I work
- 47:13with um I had heard from another person
- 47:18that sometimes when I was in the moment
- 47:20addressing like behaviors with Learners
- 47:23like I am very almost I'm very direct in
- 47:26my Superion almost cold and I didn't
- 47:28realize it I thought I was going in and
- 47:30just like guiding guiding through the
- 47:32behavior plan and just being like these
- 47:34are the expectations if somebody wasn't
- 47:35necessarily following the behavior plan
- 47:37I'm very clear with like okay this is
- 47:38what we're going to do this is why Let's
- 47:40Do It um and I guess I didn't approach
- 47:43warmly and I I heard from another um
- 47:46technician like you know sometimes you
- 47:50might come in a little strong and people
- 47:51are intimidated when you come to support
- 47:53with behaviors so that's a feedback that
- 47:55I was provided and I had to improve on
- 47:57and I didn't realize I'm like okay when
- 47:58I go in for behaviors and I never
- 48:00intended it like when I go into support
- 48:02I'm never like thinking that the Tech's
- 48:04doing anything wrong or anything you're
- 48:05just trying to guide them through it I
- 48:06was just very I'm very direct so I
- 48:08needed to be less direct a and I feel
- 48:11like this is a hard one though right
- 48:13know it is yeah there's always every
- 48:15Situation's unique and you'll figure it
- 48:17out as you go but just remembering to
- 48:19change your process if your student
- 48:21needs something different change it up
- 48:24if You' provided them with feedback and
- 48:26honestly like like saying I don't know
- 48:27did I deliver it in a way that was
- 48:29receptive were they not receptive to it
- 48:32reminding them like hey if it's not
- 48:34working you can come to me yeah and like
- 48:36that's okay like if you don't hear this
- 48:38or if like yeah it's not supporting or
- 48:40if you don't understand or if it hurt
- 48:42not if it hurt your feelings but if you
- 48:44are unclear to why it was said or if you
- 48:46don't appreciate the way that it was
- 48:47said or where it was said like you know
- 48:49you don't want to provide it in the
- 48:50wrong context maybe somebody overheard
- 48:52and they felt embarrassed so like
- 48:54providing those means of like hey like
- 48:56I'm trying to be like compassionate
- 48:59empathetic with you same with me but if
- 49:02the situation were to ever arise that
- 49:04way you have like the middle like you
- 49:05know what the other person needs or
- 49:07wants yeah exactly I
- 49:09agree all right so we just went
- 49:14through have you ever we talked about
- 49:17feedback a little bit like next we'll be
- 49:19talking about Baseline skills okay so we
- 49:21talked about this a little bit in the
- 49:23first meeting sometimes I'll have them
- 49:25take it home cuz it's very long yeah yes
- 49:27I have a few things with this yeah like
- 49:29here this we have one at the center that
- 49:31we've used that they've like established
- 49:33throughout the fieldwork experience here
- 49:36it's essentially like every task Lisk
- 49:38item bunch of skill other soft skills
- 49:40that you may need and what you're
- 49:41supposed to do is you're supposed to go
- 49:43through and rate it yourself on that
- 49:44scale I used it when I was a student too
- 49:46and I think they just modified it I
- 49:48thought it was really helpful to be like
- 49:50oh crap I don't know any of this like
- 49:51shoot I didn't realize yep so and then
- 49:54if I give it to my students they also
- 49:56see that but then I take that and I'm
- 49:58like okay like look now we have a
- 49:59starting point like say what if they're
- 50:01really good at like all those level one
- 50:03level two skills yeah my first thing is
- 50:05like okay they said they can do it maybe
- 50:08check let's assess it can they do it can
- 50:11they talk about it can they yes model
- 50:15model it what's that word and then after
- 50:17that we can move on to the next skill
- 50:19say cuz some people may know how to do
- 50:21it or talk about it but not be able to
- 50:23do the skill I want to talk about
- 50:24assessing the skill really quick I have
- 50:26this beautiful book and I got this as a
- 50:28gift when I graduated my program and
- 50:31it's called the ABA supervision handbook
- 50:34mine is a little outdated mine is with
- 50:35the previous task list um but they have
- 50:37the updated one for the current task
- 50:39list and the future task L that's coming
- 50:41out they're going to create a new one
- 50:43I'm obsessed with this book it is
- 50:45created it's an assessment tool for
- 50:47students and it breaks it down Sim SE
- 50:50this it breaks it down similar to the
- 50:52Able's assessment and so it so Kiren
- 50:55rate yourself can you collaborate with
- 50:58others who support and or provide
- 51:00services to other clients so go ahead
- 51:02rate yourself one through four I rate
- 51:04myself a four oh okay so who are you
- 51:06collaborating with I collaborate with my
- 51:09um slps the OTS I have previous history
- 51:12with collaborating with mental health
- 51:14professionals I reach out to schools and
- 51:16pediatricians oh nice okay so that's
- 51:20great so we have our little friend that
- 51:22we share uh we have I have a meeting
- 51:26with his PX why don't you come and you
- 51:28can you can talk about all of the things
- 51:30you've seen in our session and ask her
- 51:32if you have any questions wonderful that
- 51:34sounds great that might be a good way to
- 51:36like she rated that she had was a four
- 51:38now I want to see can she can she like
- 51:41do it um what I love about this book
- 51:43though it breaks it down and it tells
- 51:45you like um what the expectation is so
- 51:49it's like supervis is able to identify
- 51:51and collaborate with all necessary
- 51:53stakeholders and individuals outside of
- 51:55the field of ab such as like slps OTS
- 51:58teachers Etc but it breaks it down
- 52:00measurably and as bcbas we know we love
- 52:02a measurable criteria so I am obsessed
- 52:05with that book I will link it down below
- 52:07um the editors if you want to send me a
- 52:09new copy for the new task list I would
- 52:11love it um me and your here
- 52:15too um and then something else that I do
- 52:17with my students with like the rating so
- 52:19we have like that rating scale that we
- 52:21have for our students but I also I just
- 52:24provide them explicitly with the um task
- 52:26list that they are achieving so like
- 52:28currently the task list um six is my
- 52:30students and she like I have rate
- 52:33herself 1 to three on all of the task
- 52:35list items as well um because I found
- 52:38that a lot of students don't realize
- 52:39like they are familiar with the content
- 52:40but they don't have experience with it
- 52:42yeah makes sense like that so I want to
- 52:45start talking about the nature of
- 52:48supervision okay so this is you know we
- 52:52our jobs is to monitor their skills that
- 52:55they're like learning throughout their
- 52:57field experience so there's different
- 52:59ways we could be doing this so we could
- 53:02be monitoring their progress by making
- 53:04watching them in session with their
- 53:05clients which I feel like is the easiest
- 53:07most common things that happen the most
- 53:10often if you're lucky enough to work
- 53:12with the bcba you're getting inperson
- 53:14supervision there are people that are
- 53:16paying for their supervision outside or
- 53:18getting outside supervision so they have
- 53:19videos that they're providing making
- 53:22sure those are you got all the rules
- 53:24figured out for those ethical
- 53:26considerations but then kind of like
- 53:28making sure you're getting if you are
- 53:30someone that's getting Say the video or
- 53:33other form or T Health supervision I did
- 53:36rece making sure you get all forms of it
- 53:39on that if you're in that spot yes like
- 53:42understanding those I think that one of
- 53:43the hardest things with telea health
- 53:45supervision is uh just feeling confident
- 53:49as the supervis with the skills so it's
- 53:52like only so much I feel like can be
- 53:54seen virtually so as the supervisor
- 53:57using tella Health you need to establish
- 54:00like assessing skills that
- 54:02I could you come in one day yeah and
- 54:06supervise or if you are can you
- 54:08collaborate collaborate with other bcbas
- 54:11in the center or where they're working
- 54:13if they can go in and supervise might be
- 54:15helpful and I think this is one of the
- 54:16new requirements that'll be changing
- 54:17within 2026 as well like you have to
- 54:20have be like within the same location um
- 54:22think yeah I think it's a good one
- 54:25things are changing and then also is
- 54:28there anything else you wanted to touch
- 54:29on on that um kind of just like with
- 54:31monitoring your training skills just do
- 54:33regular check-ins to discuss like the
- 54:35skill development maybe going back to
- 54:37that Baseline sheet we filled out
- 54:39checklist hey like where are we feeling
- 54:41I try and assess it like at their um
- 54:44like when their seasons change for
- 54:46school so if they're in a new semester
- 54:47at the end of their semester I will
- 54:49assess where they are standing and I
- 54:52think what one thing that changed like
- 54:54while I had a student was the field
- 54:56coordinator was also meeting with the
- 54:58students here checking in on their hours
- 55:00but also checking in on all of this
- 55:02stuff okay is there anything you're
- 55:03missing out on that's why I love that we
- 55:05have a fieldwork coordinator because
- 55:07they are it's like a double system for
- 55:09that supervis they are like they don't
- 55:12necessarily like if say they might be
- 55:13having a negative experience they also
- 55:15have a second person to be like I'm not
- 55:17getting any of the experiences on this
- 55:18task list I need a I need something to
- 55:21change kind of thing so it just checks
- 55:23it checks us checks and balances yeah
- 55:25there a lot of rules yes there's a lot
- 55:28of like Nuance not like nuances that we
- 55:31have to make sure that we're like
- 55:32reaching that we get all the
- 55:34requirements so it's good to have that
- 55:36yes checks and balances all right next I
- 55:38wanted to talk about setting and
- 55:40communicating performance expectations
- 55:43okay just like our clients we should set
- 55:46specific measurable goals for the traine
- 55:48such as mastering a particular behavior
- 55:50intervention technique so say I'm trying
- 55:53to teach you how to train Tech
- 55:56or provide supervision to a tech you
- 55:58know yeah providing clear goal for that
- 56:01yeah what would be my observable
- 56:03measurable goal H kir I don't know why I
- 56:06want to call you Rachel cuz I
- 56:08hadel Kiren will
- 56:10provide positive feedback to
- 56:16technician three times during one
- 56:19observation session I good am I missing
- 56:21anything no I need I need I like to have
- 56:23things right trying to yeah I'm like
- 56:25thinking about it visually I'm like my
- 56:26Mastery criteria three times per session
- 56:28across how many times across let's say
- 56:31three sessions because I can get you
- 56:33three sessions it's easy to I would say
- 56:35maybe maybe more but then also can
- 56:37Kirsten
- 56:39provide H do I want to say negative
- 56:43constr constru yeah I'm like thinking
- 56:44positive negative reinforcement can
- 56:46Kiren provide constructive feedback to
- 56:49technician same on three occasions
- 56:52during a session or three consecutive
- 56:55sessions perfect MH something like that
- 56:57yeah just something observable and I
- 56:59think that it's just really important to
- 57:02we are bcbas we think of things in data
- 57:04so we shouldn't lack that within our
- 57:06students as well I also really like to
- 57:08set measurable goals for like how many
- 57:11assessments that they'll complete like I
- 57:13don't want to send my supervis out into
- 57:15the bcba world like say they've never
- 57:17done an initial assessment or like
- 57:19they've only done one VB map but they've
- 57:21never done it independently or other
- 57:24assessments you're right so like I said
- 57:25like just like goals for them like that
- 57:27like my student she just those are
- 57:29easier not my crazy ones that I just
- 57:31made up I do love those because I like
- 57:33soft skill goals I think those are
- 57:35lacking a little bit but I do set like
- 57:37expectations for like my assessments and
- 57:38things like that so just think about
- 57:40what well-rounded bpas you want to
- 57:42create and enhance and that's why maybe
- 57:45going over a supervision curriculum
- 57:48having one discussing it with your
- 57:49Clinical Director or fieldwork
- 57:51coordinator if you have one for new bcba
- 57:53a Consulting supervisor so important to
- 57:55make sure you're hitting everything
- 57:57there's a lot of skills that you could
- 57:58be teaching your student there's going
- 58:00to be a lot of situations that come up
- 58:02there's a lot of behavior analytic
- 58:04principles that you also need to learn
- 58:06along with skills make sure you're
- 58:08hitting each and every one mhm all right
- 58:12so let's go
- 58:15into nature of supervision yes MH I kind
- 58:18of touched on this already a little bit
- 58:19when trying to get like every type like
- 58:22in person yeah so a little yeah we got
- 58:25excited
- 58:26we moved on um but like observing and
- 58:28providing feedback on training
- 58:30performance so during your session you
- 58:33want to take detailed notes on the
- 58:34trainee's performance so always have
- 58:37like specific notes to work towards like
- 58:39your supervision shouldn't just be like
- 58:41okay I observed them I can mark it off
- 58:44you need to have like detailed notes for
- 58:46that supervision and what they could
- 58:48work towards what they achieved
- 58:50providing that positive feedback one
- 58:52thing is also like modeling what you're
- 58:54expecting yes need to do one thing I
- 58:57felt like was very hard and I don't
- 58:59think anyone like meant harm for it but
- 59:00like hey like you need a task to do go
- 59:04write me a bip yeah but like wait a
- 59:06minute like I've seen a bip but how do I
- 59:10write a bip and you know it might not be
- 59:12you can't sit and watch someone write a
- 59:13bit like say it takes me 3 hours but you
- 59:15can go over the main yes subjects you're
- 59:18like hey like this is what you need this
- 59:19is how I do it I set myself down I break
- 59:22it down like a task list like so I start
- 59:24with like okay I'm going to teach my
- 59:25student how to write some antient
- 59:26strategies okay they've got that I've
- 59:28taught them how to write a goal got that
- 59:30and put it all into one put it together
- 59:32now what are my reactive strategies that
- 59:34kind of thing um a tip that I like to do
- 59:38is invite the traine to observe you
- 59:40during like your specific client
- 59:42meetings whether that be with like the
- 59:43parent or if you're meeting like if
- 59:45you're supervising another learner that
- 59:47they don't have experience with and
- 59:49you're working on like a bip or goals
- 59:51and things within your session using
- 59:53that like times that you're going to be
- 59:55working on those skills as opportunities
- 59:57for them to observe one thing that we've
- 59:59seen here and that like I've gotten the
- 1:00:01chance to do is like when I was being
- 1:00:03invited in on these like meetings like
- 1:00:05supervision was that slowly the goal was
- 1:00:07for me to First like observe and then
- 1:00:10slowly be the person like
- 1:00:12providing so then we can test like do
- 1:00:14they have the ability to provide
- 1:00:17feedback are they able to think like
- 1:00:20Behavior analytically and provide shape
- 1:00:22their behavior cuz that's hard too yeah
- 1:00:26I feel like I mean yeah you would think
- 1:00:28they have all of these skills they've
- 1:00:29learned about it in school but in
- 1:00:31practice you don't get to see a lot of
- 1:00:33you see the behavior analytic principles
- 1:00:35being applied with a client but not so
- 1:00:37much and their onetoone technician role
- 1:00:39I think we it's hard for us sometimes to
- 1:00:41see them in like a bcba setting I really
- 1:00:43like that that's a good point for them
- 1:00:44to
- 1:00:45acknowledge um we also want to guide the
- 1:00:47development of case conceptualization
- 1:00:50problem solving and decisionmaking
- 1:00:52skills so presenting them with like
- 1:00:55complex pieces to work through and the
- 1:00:57trainee should be like working through
- 1:00:59it with you and like if they get stuck
- 1:01:01that's when you guide them like model
- 1:01:03the process of developing like a
- 1:01:05treatment plan for difficult cases or a
- 1:01:07behavior plan for difficult cases and
- 1:01:09encourage them to ask questions um and
- 1:01:11offer like their ideas like don't just
- 1:01:14do it for them like if they get stuck
- 1:01:16don't do it for them I encourage my
- 1:01:18students to like go look back at their
- 1:01:20notes if I know that they've been
- 1:01:21working on this in school or Hey where's
- 1:01:23your Cooper book if you were on your own
- 1:01:25how would you figure it out yes exactly
- 1:01:27Independence one thing is one tip that I
- 1:01:30have is like giving your student when
- 1:01:32they're ready a case to work on as like
- 1:01:35bcba so yeah you're still supervising it
- 1:01:38but they're like the mini bcba
- 1:01:40essentially so they're keeping up with
- 1:01:42all the program updates they're making
- 1:01:44updates after they consult with you of
- 1:01:45course but then that's also the case
- 1:01:48that they might be in like supervision
- 1:01:50with you the most that might be like
- 1:01:52like they're writing the bip for that
- 1:01:54client they're making all necessary so
- 1:01:56when a behavior occurs you can be like
- 1:01:57what do you want to do exactly like you
- 1:02:00give them the autonomy to get to know a
- 1:02:01client in and out like all the ins and
- 1:02:03outs of everything I do this a lot of
- 1:02:06times I have students who might be
- 1:02:07earlier in their experience and they
- 1:02:09don't have as much free time like they
- 1:02:11might be working like 38 hours a week
- 1:02:13directly with Learners so they don't
- 1:02:15have a lot of free time so if they're
- 1:02:16assigned to one of my cases I take a
- 1:02:18mini case load as a learner that they're
- 1:02:20working with oh that's good and then I
- 1:02:22do reverse supervision because a lot the
- 1:02:24feedback that I've received recently
- 1:02:26from supervises is that they're not
- 1:02:28getting enough opportunity to practice
- 1:02:29supervision because they are always
- 1:02:31teching which is hard it's so hard and
- 1:02:33like they feel like they're lacking that
- 1:02:35experience so I ask to swap supervision
- 1:02:37with them so I'm like okay I'm planning
- 1:02:39to supervise you on Wednesday 10 to 12
- 1:02:41for 10 to 11: I'm going to be the tech
- 1:02:43and I want you to supervise me I want
- 1:02:45you to guide me on these practices
- 1:02:47that's really good and I feel like that
- 1:02:48is the hard thing it is yeah time it's
- 1:02:51nice that you're providing them cuz
- 1:02:52you're great supervisor with the
- 1:02:54experience I feel like a lot of the
- 1:02:56times you hear like people just want you
- 1:03:00do the work for
- 1:03:02them be the assistant but it is your job
- 1:03:06to shape this person to be a good this
- 1:03:08is their experience to become your baby
- 1:03:10this is my like child within the ABA
- 1:03:12World exactly so try remembering that
- 1:03:15and take on some of those like harder
- 1:03:16tasks like being the tech the day and
- 1:03:19sometimes like you're yeah good for and
- 1:03:20I find it fun like I'm like I love teing
- 1:03:22so I'm like oh my gosh now I have so
- 1:03:23many more ideas like I sometimes we
- 1:03:25don't get that experience as often as
- 1:03:27we'd like right so another one I want to
- 1:03:29talk about is reviewing and providing
- 1:03:31feedback on written materials we touched
- 1:03:33on this a little bit but just kind of an
- 1:03:35example of this is after you reviewed a
- 1:03:37behavior plan with uh a trainee provide
- 1:03:39specific feedback okay so I know we can
- 1:03:42say like you turned in this assignment
- 1:03:45or you turned in you an assment yeah you
- 1:03:47gave me an assessment I could very
- 1:03:48easily say looks good done done or I
- 1:03:52could say eh it wasn't the best but just
- 1:03:54leave it at that
- 1:03:56that's not enough for this person to go
- 1:03:58change their behavior right so I need to
- 1:04:00tell them like I liked how Behavior
- 1:04:02specific praise right like I liked how
- 1:04:04you did this right here but then also
- 1:04:08say your language wasn't proper or
- 1:04:11something in a different section I had
- 1:04:12to like a lot I had to make a lot of
- 1:04:14grammatical corrections to just showing
- 1:04:16them like look I just made these changes
- 1:04:17here going forward maybe be more mindful
- 1:04:19of your spelling I was the student like
- 1:04:23I cannot spell still to this day are
- 1:04:26text back and forth yeah like if if
- 1:04:28you're texting me you're not going to
- 1:04:29get a good text but you know I remember
- 1:04:31I got the feedback like hey like grammar
- 1:04:34make sure you're proof reading it once
- 1:04:35or twice yeah and I was pretty mindful
- 1:04:38after that you're like dang I've heard
- 1:04:39it three times now got it but you know
- 1:04:43we're all people like we all know
- 1:04:45ourselves but sometimes it's helpful to
- 1:04:47just have it like especially like on
- 1:04:49those long Behavior plans or assessments
- 1:04:51written out for you so you can go back
- 1:04:54and look at it and I like to have
- 1:04:56um like a rubric for my tech or for my
- 1:04:59supervis if they're doing an assignment
- 1:05:00I don't just throw them in there blindly
- 1:05:02and be like here you go I have a rubric
- 1:05:04for them to follow so they know the
- 1:05:05guidelines and then I refer back to that
- 1:05:07when I'm assessing it and like grading
- 1:05:08it do you provide them with models like
- 1:05:11hey this is like an assessment I've done
- 1:05:13you can look at it I have I call it my
- 1:05:14students know it as my Mickey Mouse
- 1:05:16assessment so I have it's like my I did
- 1:05:19it as a student and it's like my most
- 1:05:20perfect assessment I'm like it's
- 1:05:22literally like everything that insns
- 1:05:24could ever want so I have it as my
- 1:05:26template and I'm like this is like a
- 1:05:28perfect assessment what you should be
- 1:05:29like looking for within like what it
- 1:05:31should look like and then also I don't
- 1:05:33know what speak of Assessments it came
- 1:05:35to me like but trying to you know like
- 1:05:38when you're writing assessments like one
- 1:05:40thing or something I supervisor told me
- 1:05:42was like hey remember who else is
- 1:05:44reading this other than like like
- 1:05:46parents are also reading these reports
- 1:05:48like reminding them like it's not just
- 1:05:50me that's reading it like insurance
- 1:05:52company's going to see this parents are
- 1:05:53going to see this one thing I learned
- 1:05:55was like don't say the cannot do oh my
- 1:05:59gosh yeah cuz I used to write it like
- 1:06:01you as a student I would write like cuz
- 1:06:03when I would Google examples that's what
- 1:06:05you find that's what you find so if this
- 1:06:07is something you want to shape in a
- 1:06:08person telling them maybe like the why
- 1:06:10too like might be reading this and
- 1:06:12you're telling their child can't talk
- 1:06:14we're developing these soft skills
- 1:06:16within hard skills so maybe even writing
- 1:06:18that in your comments could be very
- 1:06:20helpful yeah I
- 1:06:22agree um we also want to oversee and
- 1:06:25evaluate the impact of the trainee's
- 1:06:27service delivery fancy terms we want to
- 1:06:30track like a client progress under the
- 1:06:32trainee guidance and review the data and
- 1:06:34supervision sessions with them so
- 1:06:36showing that the decisions that they're
- 1:06:38making or the behavior that they're
- 1:06:39engaging in with their learner is
- 1:06:41resulting an effective uh results so
- 1:06:44cool like you decided you wanted to put
- 1:06:46in a replacement behavior for mouthing
- 1:06:49and you provided them with the chewy
- 1:06:51let's look at the data like after you
- 1:06:53put in the face change light for when
- 1:06:54the chewy they decrease the
- 1:06:56behavior so just showing them like how
- 1:06:58you could do that yes and that's
- 1:07:00empowering them too it gives them like
- 1:07:02data to look at to be like oh my gosh
- 1:07:03check out the decision I made and how
- 1:07:05like great an impact it is and also say
- 1:07:07you made a decision and it didn't go so
- 1:07:09well y that's hard too allowing them the
- 1:07:11autonomy though with like a judgement
- 1:07:13this didn't work like okay when is the
- 1:07:15best time to change this intervention
- 1:07:17yes cuz there's so many opportunities
- 1:07:19like how long it yeah before you do
- 1:07:20change it and reminding them that like
- 1:07:22as experienced bcbas we choose
- 1:07:25interventions all the time that don't
- 1:07:26result in effective like there's a
- 1:07:28million ways there's a million scenarios
- 1:07:31that could happen within this one
- 1:07:32learning opportunity so just try to
- 1:07:33remember that with each one we're trying
- 1:07:35it's like these are all tips air like
- 1:07:37these are all little points that we're
- 1:07:38making but there's so many ways to go
- 1:07:40with it as long as you're using like
- 1:07:41evidence-based practices give it your
- 1:07:43best and like we're all learning uh next
- 1:07:46one evaluating the effectiveness of
- 1:07:48supervision through fieldwork okay so
- 1:07:51this is really for this is Peri asking
- 1:07:54the trainy for feed back on the
- 1:07:55supervision process I know we've talked
- 1:07:57about this a little bit already so we'll
- 1:07:59just touch on it like do you feel
- 1:08:00supported is there anything I could do
- 1:08:02for you is there anything you feel like
- 1:08:04you're lacking anything you want to
- 1:08:06learn right now you aren't learning it's
- 1:08:08an open space I use this time like I
- 1:08:11talk a lot about like their um semesters
- 1:08:14for school but I'm like what are you
- 1:08:15learning in school and that you want to
- 1:08:16apply like learning to apply the
- 1:08:19concepts is really really tricky
- 1:08:20sometimes so it's like okay tell me what
- 1:08:22you need from me to get these
- 1:08:24experiences and all of these are kind of
- 1:08:26examples of things you can do in your
- 1:08:27individual supervision session I know we
- 1:08:29already talked about this but it's that
- 1:08:31I just want to touch on it one more time
- 1:08:32cuz we're about to go into I have a code
- 1:08:34word I don't want to forget it before we
- 1:08:36move on the code word three before I
- 1:08:38forget is skills our last code word
- 1:08:41we're
- 1:08:43done okay so we just talked about all of
- 1:08:47the things you want to try to hit on
- 1:08:48during your individual supervision
- 1:08:51session so this is your scheduled
- 1:08:53regular one toone meetings any times
- 1:08:55you're bringing them into your
- 1:08:57supervisions stuff of that sort you're
- 1:08:59using this time to
- 1:09:01Deep dive deep into specific case issues
- 1:09:05their specific skill set remember we're
- 1:09:08trying to keep things consistent here
- 1:09:10try to have a consistent schedule for
- 1:09:12yeah you want to schedule at meeting
- 1:09:13time that's it could be bi-weekly or
- 1:09:15weekly whatever like fits you best
- 1:09:17depending on how much supervision you're
- 1:09:19getting like one-on-one with Learners so
- 1:09:21I want to touch on kind of the other
- 1:09:23supervisions that you could be writing
- 1:09:26or that you might get as a student y so
- 1:09:29number one let's start with observation
- 1:09:32with the client okay all right so you
- 1:09:36have your individual supervisor they may
- 1:09:37or may not be the person that provides
- 1:09:39this next category of supervision but if
- 1:09:42you've got multiple supervisors at your
- 1:09:44organization you might have someone else
- 1:09:46providing that client like observation
- 1:09:49with you but your one-on-one supervisor
- 1:09:51should be doing it as well you can
- 1:09:52always ask them like hey could you come
- 1:09:54in too
- 1:09:55I want to see this something like to
- 1:09:57keep in mind as a tip is like this can
- 1:09:59rotate between the different methods the
- 1:10:01observation can take place so it can be
- 1:10:03like directly observed in person this
- 1:10:05can be a telea health observation um or
- 1:10:08even this is something that I think gets
- 1:10:10forgotten is like a recorded video and
- 1:10:12this one's hard because you got to make
- 1:10:14sure you're following Hipp yes there's
- 1:10:15Hippa guidelines and things like that
- 1:10:17but this is something that I had to do
- 1:10:18as a student with my um practicum like
- 1:10:21professors I would have to like get
- 1:10:23supervision with them assignments it's
- 1:10:26so like awkward but I feel like it's
- 1:10:28also the one where like the person
- 1:10:30observing might not know the client so
- 1:10:32they're really just have no bias when
- 1:10:34they're watching you yeah it's yeah it's
- 1:10:35a little uncomfortable sometimes and you
- 1:10:37have to watch it with them as a student
- 1:10:39really I don't like it so really this is
- 1:10:41when you would be observing the trainee
- 1:10:43working with the client via all those
- 1:10:46different methods that you just shared
- 1:10:48and then you would provide real time
- 1:10:50feedback through a like inperson super
- 1:10:52like right there and then or if they've
- 1:10:54requested it after after after or
- 1:10:56written depending on what you've choosen
- 1:10:58or what you're comfortable with what
- 1:11:00works for you and then this would be
- 1:11:03either in the session or immediately
- 1:11:04after the session really okay yeah all
- 1:11:06right you touched on it next is group
- 1:11:09supervision and this is something I'm
- 1:11:10like still learning as a bcba I didn't
- 1:11:13have experience with this as a supervis
- 1:11:15um but there when you you can have group
- 1:11:17supervision for students like a number
- 1:11:20of students from two students to 10
- 1:11:22students and this is a group supervision
- 1:11:25the trainees roleplay different
- 1:11:26scenarios provide feedback to each other
- 1:11:28you might be talking about specific
- 1:11:30topics relating to like shared Learners
- 1:11:33um we really want to ensure that the
- 1:11:35group size allows for Meaningful
- 1:11:37participation so that's why there's the
- 1:11:39requirement from the be to be for two to
- 1:11:4110 you don't want it to be too many
- 1:11:42people where they're not going to get or
- 1:11:43too little if it's just you not a
- 1:11:47grp but
- 1:11:50going like around this this could be
- 1:11:53like you don't want all there's a
- 1:11:54requirement for how many there are a
- 1:11:57month or how it can't be I believe more
- 1:11:59than half uh yeah and we'll have to yeah
- 1:12:02we'll dive in when we talk about the
- 1:12:03other like percentages that we're going
- 1:12:05to touch on in like a different episode
- 1:12:07um but we'll touch on that one then so
- 1:12:09there's requirements for that and then
- 1:12:10alongside that it doesn't like so it's a
- 1:12:14little easy if you have like two or
- 1:12:15three students right like hey let's all
- 1:12:17meet my supervisor would do this and we
- 1:12:19would go over like terminology and stuff
- 1:12:22and would dive into that or we would be
- 1:12:24like
- 1:12:25just like we would role play a lot just
- 1:12:27me and my supervisor and our others it
- 1:12:29was Jenny Jenny Jenny we would go over
- 1:12:32things in our meetings like that in our
- 1:12:34group supervision settings but because
- 1:12:36we had a field work coordinator one cool
- 1:12:38thing we did was we had larger groups
- 1:12:42around like six sixish us usually sixish
- 1:12:45so one other thing to keep in mind is
- 1:12:48that your group should be similar in
- 1:12:50skill set so you can have a really brand
- 1:12:52new student and a higher
- 1:12:55higher there no higher skilled student
- 1:12:58in the same group because you couldn't
- 1:12:59be working on the same things together a
- 1:13:02lot oh sorry go ahead a lot of things
- 1:13:03that we do Within These group
- 1:13:04supervisions at like our current
- 1:13:06location is we try and hone in on
- 1:13:09experiences that they may not be getting
- 1:13:11directly with clients so much or like
- 1:13:13have experience with right um so like
- 1:13:16those like novel things we and we also
- 1:13:18do like little like trainings with them
- 1:13:20on how to do ioa data and they practice
- 1:13:22with each other just like things that
- 1:13:23they don't get direct experience with
- 1:13:25really like that I remember when it
- 1:13:27started here you know essentially we
- 1:13:28were doing we were learning so a lot of
- 1:13:31the things we did was like because we
- 1:13:32were all brand new we would do there was
- 1:13:34a book it was like many cases and we
- 1:13:36would like look at it together and be
- 1:13:37like what's the what could be changed
- 1:13:40what's the issue here we would go over
- 1:13:42that as a group sometimes in the group
- 1:13:44supervisions we would have assignments
- 1:13:46we needed to do before right and then
- 1:13:48the bring it was nice because we I'm
- 1:13:50sure now if someone wasn't bringing in
- 1:13:52their work that was like something they
- 1:13:53could talk about and get Fe on it's like
- 1:13:56feedback opportunities yep I really love
- 1:13:58that so I like that part of it as well
- 1:14:00and that's really the different types of
- 1:14:02those are all the types of supervision
- 1:14:03we can provide so I feel like there's so
- 1:14:06much left still because there's so much
- 1:14:08to this so I feel like remembering there
- 1:14:11are a lot of requirements go on the bacb
- 1:14:13website read through them read the
- 1:14:16newsletters they're boring okay it's
- 1:14:18hard they're not fun but it's our duty
- 1:14:21as we SP to read the newsletters and
- 1:14:22stay up to date on like the requirements
- 1:14:24um and they send them in our email they
- 1:14:26make it easy for us they're trying to
- 1:14:28reduce the response effort now we just
- 1:14:29have to read it yep so this was just a
- 1:14:32small part of it we'd love to do more on
- 1:14:34this topic cuz it's very deep especially
- 1:14:37like getting into like different types
- 1:14:38of tasks you could be like I know we
- 1:14:41touched on it but there's so much this
- 1:14:44task L is like three pages long so we'll
- 1:14:45end it today cuz I got to get home to my
- 1:14:47child yes I'm so glad you're back in the
