  8. 0:17components of effective practicum
  9. 0:19programs and applied Behavior Analysis
  10. 0:22by examining the challenges and barriers
  11. 0:24faced by ABA agencies in cultivating
  12. 0:26comprehensive practicum experiences our
  13. 0:29second objective is participants will
  14. 0:31explore and discuss strategies to
  15. 0:32enhance the quality and coherence of
  16. 0:35practicum programs with ABA agencies
  17. 0:37fostering collaboration among ABA agency
  18. 0:39owners leadership supervisors bcbas and
  19. 0:43students feel like that was a mouthful
  20. 0:45um so we coai Zia is our current
  21. 0:49Regional fieldwork advisor and Taylor is
  22. 0:52our previous fieldwork adviser now
  23. 0:55Clinical Director so Kai can you tell us
  24. 0:57a little bit about what your position in
  25. 1:00tals and how you kind of got into the
  26. 1:01field of ABA in general starting kind of
  27. 1:04with how I got into the field um I went
  28. 1:07to um Dearborn for my undergrad studies
  29. 1:10um and I was a Psychology major with a
  30. 1:14minor in BIO and minor philosophy um I
  31. 1:16didn't really know what I wanted to do
  32. 1:18with my psych major you know you have to
  33. 1:21kind of go to grad school right um with
  34. 1:24a Psychology major I went to a career
  35. 1:26Affair my senior year and I found a tech
  36. 1:29job there yeah which I applied for and
  37. 1:31got and my first supervisor there was
  38. 1:34great I really enjoyed working with my
  39. 1:36first kiddo and that was kind of how I
  40. 1:38got into the field uh prior to that I
  41. 1:40really didn't know what ABA or Autism
  42. 1:43were I feel like that's so common with
  43. 1:45like when you graduate with a psych
  44. 1:46degree it's like okay I want to work
  45. 1:47with kids but how do I like where am I
  46. 1:49going with it and that's kind of how I
  47. 1:50got into the field of ABA too you're
  48. 1:52just like find it yeah and there's not
  49. 1:54like a lot of undergraduate classes that
  50. 1:56focus on ABA or Autism even in like my
  51. 2:00abnormal site class which focused more
  52. 2:02on like diagnosable disorders right I
  53. 2:04feel like we didn't really go over
  54. 2:05autism you go over more of the stuff
  55. 2:07that you hear about every day or that
  56. 2:08you see on TV yeah um I think so too
  57. 2:11yeah that's the tldr of how I got
  58. 2:13started and um I was at that my first
  59. 2:16company for about five years for is a
  60. 2:18tech a little over a year is a bcba I
  61. 2:21found Blossom um I love the N teaching
  62. 2:24style so I came here as a bcba
  63. 2:27eventually got a lead position and then
  64. 2:29moved into the
  65. 2:30Regional fieldwork supervisor role when
  66. 2:32Taylor moved out of it yeah into
  67. 2:34Clinical Director um I'm new to the role
  68. 2:37still so I'm kind of learning the ropes
  69. 2:39on the Fly sure um but it it mainly
  70. 2:42entails like making sure our students
  71. 2:44are getting like consistent experience
  72. 2:46across supervisors providing some of the
  73. 2:48extra support CU supervisors also have
  74. 2:50case loads and stuff that they have to
  75. 2:52focus on while while they're doing these
  76. 2:55supervisions um so yeah that's like been
  77. 2:58the big thing for me so far um um and I
  78. 3:00really enjoy like the teaching ABA
  79. 3:02material and like kind of creating
  80. 3:04examples out of like real life scenarios
  81. 3:07so having like the group supervisions to
  82. 3:08talk about that stuff and apply ABA to
  83. 3:11the real world and also play games um
  84. 3:14and create like creative content which
  85. 3:16creative it's one of your things
  86. 3:17something that Taylor did great with um
  87. 3:19but yeah so that's kind of how I feel
  88. 3:21about the role so far and what I've been
  89. 3:22doing yeah thank you for telling us a
  90. 3:23little bit about it Taylor can you tell
  91. 3:25us a little bit about how you got into
  92. 3:27the field of ABA and kind of how you got
  93. 3:29to where are now sure Ken um I went to
  94. 3:33CMU Central Michigan University for my
  95. 3:36undergrad okay and um again we all
  96. 3:39stumble upon ABA but I was a psych major
  97. 3:42I wanted to go into clinical counseling
  98. 3:45and I volunteered at the autism clinic
  99. 3:47there and I had this kiddo that I just
  100. 3:51fell in love with and I always say like
  101. 3:53he looked at me in a way that just I
  102. 3:56don't know made me feel so special and I
  103. 3:57connected with you know my first person
  104. 4:00with autism yeah and I knew then like
  105. 4:03this is what I want to do with my life
  106. 4:05um so Central Michigan has an undergrad
  107. 4:08a couple ABA classes that I started to
  108. 4:10take um and then they also offered a
  109. 4:13grad program which I did not go to but
  110. 4:15once I graduated I immediately enrolled
  111. 4:17in a grad program Ball State which I
  112. 4:19know a lot of us go to which we'll get
  113. 4:21into the online programs and then was a
  114. 4:25tech for 5 six years bcba for 5 six
  115. 4:28years um me and and Kiren actually used
  116. 4:30to work together um and then one day
  117. 4:34actually the pandemic hit and we
  118. 4:35switched to tella health and I saw
  119. 4:38Blossom on Facebook and I messaged them
  120. 4:40on Facebook and I was like you guys look
  121. 4:42like the style that I want to go to and
  122. 4:46they messaged me back and we were just a
  123. 4:47tiny little company but um you know they
  124. 4:51got me in as a bcba very thankful for
  125. 4:53that and then I kind of climbed the
  126. 4:56ranks I went to lead bcba yes knew I
  127. 4:59wanted to grow um lead bcba uh Regional
  128. 5:03fieldwork adviser as well and now I'm
  129. 5:06very thankful that I have the chance to
  130. 5:08be Clinical Director and I just started
  131. 5:09in that role too so very happy coai is
  132. 5:12where he is and where I am so yeah it's
  133. 5:14been a journey Both Deserve the roles
  134. 5:16the origin stories are really funny with
  135. 5:19like just how people get started I know
  136. 5:20my first kid is something cool that
  137. 5:22actually happened um cuz I think your
  138. 5:23first experience is really important for
  139. 5:25staying in the field um my first kid was
  140. 5:28like a non-verbal learner and then
  141. 5:30within like I had him for 2 years very
  142. 5:32long time but like by the time he
  143. 5:33discharged like full like full verbal
  144. 5:36like like full verbal Communicator um
  145. 5:39just in gened school and he actually
  146. 5:41messages me on LinkedIn uh maybe like
  147. 5:44maybe like three or four months ago oh
  148. 5:46my go and he's got his own podcast now
  149. 5:48so he's doing what we're doing yeah I
  150. 5:50want to have him as a guest we'll have
  151. 5:52to talk about him but I thought that was
  152. 5:53really cool it's like a full circle
  153. 5:55moment um that's amazing and it like
  154. 5:57kind of shows the difference between
  155. 5:58This and like other fields iny I know
  156. 5:59Taylor mentioned like clinical
  157. 6:00counseling this can be like a little
  158. 6:02more light-hearted which is nice you
  159. 6:05know lots lots of Happ like lots of
  160. 6:06tough stuff but lots of happy moments
  161. 6:08too right a lot of fun yeah yeah well I
  162. 6:11know that we all are pretty passionate
  163. 6:13that's why we're all here about
  164. 6:14practicum experience and just that in
  165. 6:18the field in general I feel like
  166. 6:19everyone has kind of a unique practicum
  167. 6:21experience and sometimes they're great
  168. 6:23sometimes they may not be um so I kind
  169. 6:26of want to hear a little bit about both
  170. 6:27of your experience as practicum students
  171. 6:29kind of why you're so passionate about
  172. 6:31making it how high quality it is now so
  173. 6:33coai do you want to go first and tell us
  174. 6:34a little bit sure um so I like during my
  175. 6:38time as a tech I had one supervisor
  176. 6:42pretty much the entire time like I had
  177. 6:43spot supervisions from other supervisors
  178. 6:45but I had the one for all the kids that
  179. 6:47I worked with and she was also my like
  180. 6:49fieldwork
  181. 6:51supervisor um it wasn't very structured
  182. 6:54okay I thought she was like a great
  183. 6:56supervisor but the program itself wasn't
  184. 6:58developed at the place that I worked at
  185. 7:00yet so it was more like a thing where
  186. 7:03management would be like you can take a
  187. 7:05practicum student okay and have meetings
  188. 7:07when you can have meetings and there
  189. 7:09wasn't like a set set of rules or like
  190. 7:11an like a task list for experience that
  191. 7:13I was going off of so it wasn't very
  192. 7:16structured at all yeah not really um but
  193. 7:18she was a great supervisor which kind of
  194. 7:20kept me afloat um and that's kind of
  195. 7:24pivoted like kind of pivoting that's
  196. 7:25kind of helped guide me and how I want
  197. 7:28to be as a supervisor um CU I may not be
  198. 7:30the most structured person either um but
  199. 7:35my experience was mainly focused on
  200. 7:36writing programs like maybe like case
  201. 7:39collab um I did two assessments my first
  202. 7:42Ables took me six hours to run by myself
  203. 7:44oh my gosh like as as a bcba as no as a
  204. 7:47as a student when I ran my first Ables
  205. 7:49it took me six hours um we had to do it
  206. 7:52across two full sessions with a kiddo um
  207. 7:55to work through the entire abls and I'd
  208. 7:58also built the entire binder so between
  209. 8:00that and between that and the actual
  210. 8:02assessment itself probably like 21 hours
  211. 8:03worth of work um you really got familiar
  212. 8:07with the a there yeah so so I'd say like
  213. 8:09my experience and I did an online
  214. 8:11program as well so I'd say my experience
  215. 8:12was more like more on me to like create
  216. 8:16any experiences I like wanted to get ask
  217. 8:19the questions that I needed answered um
  218. 8:22but without necessarily having like the
  219. 8:24guideline for what to talk about or what
  220. 8:26to ask or hey here's what you need to
  221. 8:28learn um um and that kind of has
  222. 8:32impacted who I am as a supervisor I
  223. 8:34think not necessarily in a negative way
  224. 8:35but um yeah I feel like yeah so I feel
  225. 8:38like your supervisor was doing the best
  226. 8:40with what resources she had and you're
  227. 8:42in a similar situation as I was like I
  228. 8:44had really great supervisors but I had
  229. 8:47to kind of create the experiences that I
  230. 8:49wanted um and like make it kind of
  231. 8:52create it myself because there wasn't
  232. 8:53anything to guide us like within our
  233. 8:55program and you were there too as a
  234. 8:57student do you want to talk a little bit
  235. 8:58about your practicum exper experience
  236. 9:00yes I very similar to you had a great
  237. 9:03supervisor she was very by the book kind
  238. 9:06of got me out of my comfort zone um and
  239. 9:09we didn't have a curriculum and we went
  240. 9:12off of day-to-day things that happened
  241. 9:14with the kids and I'm sure a lot of
  242. 9:16people listening might have similar
  243. 9:17experiences it kind of just comes up as
  244. 9:19you go yeah um and yes thankfully that
  245. 9:22you know she guided me in the right
  246. 9:24direction and again I try and model a
  247. 9:26lot of what she instilled in me um but I
  248. 9:29think the biggest thing was I I didn't
  249. 9:33have like I like coai I had an online
  250. 9:36program so I didn't have that classroom
  251. 9:38cohort feel to like bounce things off of
  252. 9:41um other people so it was me and her me
  253. 9:43and her and you know you go to homebased
  254. 9:46sessions and you're kind of by yourself
  255. 9:48and you check in the next day about
  256. 9:49things so um overall I'm happy and it
  257. 9:52led me to where I am today and Blossom
  258. 9:54helps me continue to grow but um I I
  259. 9:58just felt like you know it could have
  260. 10:00been better and it is what it is yeah I
  261. 10:04feel like I was in a very similar
  262. 10:05situation so we both had the same um
  263. 10:08ultimately practicum supervisor and she
  264. 10:10was fantastic and she and I actually did
  265. 10:12the same education program so she and I
  266. 10:15used that to build the experiences I
  267. 10:17wanted but I had to fight for them not
  268. 10:19because of her choice but like it was
  269. 10:21company decision like we couldn't just
  270. 10:24make um opportunities arise like we had
  271. 10:26to follow the lead of the learner rather
  272. 10:28than doing doing Mack assignments it's
  273. 10:30like no we don't have the time to do
  274. 10:31Mack assignments we have all these other
  275. 10:33things to do right um yeah and piggy
  276. 10:35backing off the home base thing um that
  277. 10:38made it really difficult cuz I was in
  278. 10:39the same situation made it very
  279. 10:42difficult
  280. 10:42to get experience shadowing like going
  281. 10:46to other supervisions and stuff because
  282. 10:47I had a full case load so I'd work with
  283. 10:49kids from 12 to 8 but I those would be
  284. 10:52in two different places so I'd have to
  285. 10:54drive somewhere else in the morning if I
  286. 10:56wanted to get shadowing in and I mean we
  287. 10:58all have lives outside of this like I
  288. 11:00had a dog so it's I can't just be gone
  289. 11:03from 8 to eight every day um so that
  290. 11:06made it really difficult that was one of
  291. 11:07the things about the experience that I'd
  292. 11:08probably change and I I just wanted to
  293. 11:11go off of you too when Kai said it's
  294. 11:13kind of R bcba supervisors have full
  295. 11:16case loads and the company is kind of
  296. 11:18like yeah here's a student it's just
  297. 11:20interesting that you know not every
  298. 11:22company really takes the time to prepare
  299. 11:24that bcb for a student and luckily the
  300. 11:27bacb guidelines just um imple mented the
  301. 11:29oneyear rule where a first year bcba has
  302. 11:33to be overseen by a fifth year bcba
  303. 11:35which I think that's really heading in
  304. 11:37the right direction because when I took
  305. 11:39my first student I was fresh off of the
  306. 11:41exam and I'm like okay well here we go
  307. 11:44but um yeah just like making sure I mean
  308. 11:47we'll get into it but making sure that
  309. 11:48those BCBS are prepared as well and have
  310. 11:50the time yeah so kind of with your guys
  311. 11:52experience as the regional fieldwork
  312. 11:53advisers I feel like you guys have done
  313. 11:55a lot of research knowing what um like
  314. 11:58typical experiences look like what the
  315. 12:00general experience of a student looks
  316. 12:02like at other companies or just kind of
  317. 12:03standard amongst the field so can you
  318. 12:05tell us a little bit about that and then
  319. 12:06we'll get into like how we want to
  320. 12:07improve it and what we want to make
  321. 12:09different so the funny thing about it is
  322. 12:12I feel like the typical experience isn't
  323. 12:14typical because it's not the same across
  324. 12:17that's a good point every other every
  325. 12:18other place you know um even speaking to
  326. 12:21the other bcbas that we work with here
  327. 12:23on a regular basis about our experiences
  328. 12:25um it's like the only thing that's
  329. 12:27common is there like wasn't a lot in
  330. 12:30common like there's not a lot of
  331. 12:31structure and I think that's the barrier
  332. 12:33yeah that's like where it's like kind of
  333. 12:35lacking 100% And to like piggy back off
  334. 12:38the kind of the company just saying like
  335. 12:39oh here's a student I know like where I
  336. 12:41was my supervisor didn't have to take me
  337. 12:43on as a student she was pretty much
  338. 12:47given the choice as we all were there
  339. 12:49like will you take a student and if if
  340. 12:51she says no then it's on me to seek out
  341. 12:54someone else which is difficult because
  342. 12:56she's the only supervisor I had on my
  343. 12:57case on yeah kids yeah so I think like
  344. 13:00the just just the fact that that's how
  345. 13:02it starts shows you there isn't like a
  346. 13:04ton of like structure like a curriculum
  347. 13:07as Taylor mentioned earlier um for
  348. 13:09people to go off of so really the
  349. 13:11practicum experience in most places I
  350. 13:13think comes down to the student yeah
  351. 13:15which isn't it's not necessarily like a
  352. 13:17it's like the equivalent of being in a
  353. 13:19school and telling a kid in math class
  354. 13:21okay what are we going to learn about
  355. 13:22today and they don't know what they
  356. 13:24don't know right and that's where yeah I
  357. 13:26I love that phrase so it's like we want
  358. 13:28to make make it like as a student you
  359. 13:30want to make it what you want to get out
  360. 13:32of it but you can't make anything like
  361. 13:34if you don't know what to look for you
  362. 13:36think you're getting the best experience
  363. 13:37but then you become a bcba and you might
  364. 13:39experience like not knowing now because
  365. 13:41you didn't have those other experiences
  366. 13:43yeah you don't know what you've missed
  367. 13:44out on until like you're in that
  368. 13:46situation and you need it but you don't
  369. 13:48have it out when I was doing um the
  370. 13:51research of you know how to build the
  371. 13:53program luckily I had a a bit of a
  372. 13:55foundation from my previous fieldwork
  373. 13:58advisor here um we've had a couple but I
  374. 14:02actually sent a poll out to a couple
  375. 14:03hundred bcbas to have them rate their
  376. 14:06practicum experiences from one to five
  377. 14:08you know one being the least support
  378. 14:10five being I loved my fieldwork
  379. 14:12experience I wouldn't change anything
  380. 14:13and I I think we came up with it was
  381. 14:16about 60% was rating their practicum
  382. 14:20experiences a two and those were current
  383. 14:22bcbas so um just the general I know
  384. 14:25that's only a sample of 200 bcbas but
  385. 14:27just the general consensus
  386. 14:29most people fell unders supported and um
  387. 14:32underprepared as you know you take the
  388. 14:34exam and then you have your license and
  389. 14:37companies hire you but did you really do
  390. 14:40the work are you really prepared to work
  391. 14:42you know with not just autism population
  392. 14:45but any population any age so um that's
  393. 14:48really what I found when we were doing
  394. 14:49some of the research for the conferences
  395. 14:51we attended yeah and I think what speaks
  396. 14:53to like the disparity and what
  397. 14:55everybody's getting is if you if you did
  398. 14:57a poll on how the exper experience was
  399. 14:59you get results like that but if you do
  400. 15:01a poll on how your supervisor was you
  401. 15:03probably get a totally different set of
  402. 15:04results cuz we we both we all said that
  403. 15:06we appreciated who our supervisor was as
  404. 15:08a person
  405. 15:09but they didn't have the resources we're
  406. 15:11acknowledging that but that's our
  407. 15:13experience y you know yeah okay Taylor
  408. 15:17so can you tell us what the ideal
  409. 15:19structure of a practicum experience
  410. 15:21would look like obviously the field of
  411. 15:24ABA has not perfected it yet but we have
  412. 15:26some ideas um so we really want to first
  413. 15:29and foremost make sure that there is
  414. 15:32somebody overseeing it so every company
  415. 15:36has you know the CEO or the president or
  416. 15:39you know the Clinical Director depending
  417. 15:41on your size but there does need to be
  418. 15:44somebody that focuses just on fieldwork
  419. 15:48and I think that has really helped you
  420. 15:50know Blossom as a company to have
  421. 15:52somebody day in day out be monitoring
  422. 15:54that and then from there down we want to
  423. 15:57make sure that our bcbas competent
  424. 15:59supervisor so making sure that we go
  425. 16:01over what is expected of them as a
  426. 16:04practicum supervisor making sure they
  427. 16:06understand the handbook in and out um
  428. 16:09there has been times where you know BCB
  429. 16:11they aren't even sure about the hours
  430. 16:12ratio so making sure they understand the
  431. 16:13handbook making sure they demonstrate
  432. 16:16the skills that we want to instill in
  433. 16:18future bcbas um we want to make sure
  434. 16:21that they meet on a weekly basis
  435. 16:24somebody's monitoring that as well and
  436. 16:26they're getting that feedback
  437. 16:27consistently um getting the appropriate
  438. 16:30experiences like Co I said earlier his
  439. 16:33experience was mainly assessment writing
  440. 16:35and teching so making sure that they're
  441. 16:37attending parent meetings they're
  442. 16:38attending you know IEPs if needed um
  443. 16:41collaborating with other disciplines um
  444. 16:43so things of that nature of course we
  445. 16:45want to make sure that everybody
  446. 16:47experiences a little bit of everything
  447. 16:48and then also communicating with
  448. 16:50universities and everything I know
  449. 16:52that's kind of uncommon but um making
  450. 16:54sure the coordinator is overseeing you
  451. 16:57know their University experience grades
  452. 17:00um their assignments and reports and
  453. 17:03things like that as well so just making
  454. 17:04sure it's a comprehensive kind of
  455. 17:06hitting everything in the task list yeah
  456. 17:09thank you I think that and you hit on
  457. 17:12like the education component I think
  458. 17:13that is like one thing that our field is
  459. 17:15really really lacking um because there
  460. 17:17you get scored on all of these things
  461. 17:20within your program at school but you're
  462. 17:23not knowing and those are just things
  463. 17:24those are like not real examples but so
  464. 17:26you're like um professors aren't knowing
  465. 17:29how you're applying those skills in the
  466. 17:31real life like examples so that's
  467. 17:33something that we bridging that Gap is
  468. 17:35really important um and then just going
  469. 17:37off of what you guys said we don't know
  470. 17:39what we don't know so at least at
  471. 17:41Blossom and I'm hoping other a agencies
  472. 17:44take this as well um don't put it on the
  473. 17:47student you know it's kind of up to us
  474. 17:49to build these bcbas we are signing off
  475. 17:52on their experience at the end of the
  476. 17:54day and we want to make sure um that
  477. 17:56we're prideful in that so yeah yeah you
  478. 17:59have anything to note on it coai like as
  479. 18:01you're entering the role yeah I think
  480. 18:03like um Taylor hit on a lot of the stuff
  481. 18:05that is important um one of the nice
  482. 18:07things about having the person in the
  483. 18:08regional position um it creates like the
  484. 18:11group cohort so like we get the group
  485. 18:14supervisions even if the experience that
  486. 18:16every um student was getting was similar
  487. 18:19across bcbas having that group cohort
  488. 18:23allows the students to share experiences
  489. 18:25with each other cuz like not everybody
  490. 18:27gets every experience just because
  491. 18:29that's just not how your day goes um not
  492. 18:31going but having like the cohort to talk
  493. 18:35through some of that stuff with I think
  494. 18:37is really beneficial because you just
  495. 18:38get let's say there's nine people in the
  496. 18:40cohort you get nine times the experience
  497. 18:42that You' normally get um because the
  498. 18:43communication's so constant and
  499. 18:46collaborative and I think another
  500. 18:48important thing with the practicum like
  501. 18:51with the program itself is having the
  502. 18:53additional roles within the company yeah
  503. 18:55um such as like the supervising
  504. 18:57candidate role that we have here um in
  505. 19:00order to like provide like a different
  506. 19:02set of experiences give more leadership
  507. 19:04opportunities um so what does that role
  508. 19:07entail um for people who are unfamiliar
  509. 19:09with the supervising candidate so our
  510. 19:11supervising candidates um they have
  511. 19:13lighter case loads so they're teching a
  512. 19:15little bit less than your normal
  513. 19:17full-time technician and then they're
  514. 19:19allotted some extra paid time to provide
  515. 19:23support to other kids in the clinic um
  516. 19:25or some of the other techs so they'll
  517. 19:27they'll get called to support when a
  518. 19:29behavior happens so the bcba doesn't
  519. 19:30always have to drop what they're doing
  520. 19:31and go do it and then they also get the
  521. 19:33experience supporting on like novel
  522. 19:36behaviors or with kids that they don't
  523. 19:37know as well um and it gives them an
  524. 19:40opportunity to collaborate amongst each
  525. 19:41other gives them an opportunity to
  526. 19:43collaborate with bcbas about what
  527. 19:44they've seen when they help on these
  528. 19:45Behavior calls um which is like a huge
  529. 19:47skill once you go into the field um they
  530. 19:50also get some a lot of time to go do
  531. 19:54fieldwork stuff so like attend
  532. 19:56supervisions yeah help right program
  533. 19:59unrestricted hours yeah they UNR opport
  534. 20:02exactly cuz the unrestricted time I've
  535. 20:04anyone who has done their practicum
  536. 20:05experience in the last 10 years um they
  537. 20:08know that the unrestricted time is
  538. 20:09really hard to get yeah like and if
  539. 20:11places staff you on a kid for 40 hours
  540. 20:14you're not the expectation is pretty
  541. 20:15much I mean to get 750 or 900 or 1,200
  542. 20:20or whatever you needed based on your
  543. 20:21experience um it takes a long time
  544. 20:23because you have to do that stuff
  545. 20:24outside of your normal work work hours
  546. 20:27and then we're like teaching stud
  547. 20:28students that their work life balance
  548. 20:30doesn't matter like their home life
  549. 20:32isn't valued no and and you definitely
  550. 20:34don't want that cuz I feel like there's
  551. 20:36already such a big burnout yeah um like
  552. 20:39in this field you know like you see
  553. 20:40bcbas who are done before they're 30 or
  554. 20:42texts that are texts that are done 6
  555. 20:44months into the job right um so I think
  556. 20:47having that extra time allotted to get
  557. 20:49some of that stuff done focus on some of
  558. 20:51the admin work because that's what bcba
  559. 20:52life is like too balancing the admin
  560. 20:54with the clinical stuff we are very
  561. 20:57lucky I just have to to say to be at a
  562. 21:00company that will invest in that
  563. 21:01unrestricted paid time I was going to
  564. 21:03ask so what how many hours do our um
  565. 21:06supervising candidates get um for like
  566. 21:09paid so the supervising candidates get
  567. 21:1112 um and some of that time is going to
  568. 21:14be a lotted to being that Center support
  569. 21:16staff okay um but they have the rest of
  570. 21:18the time to kind of use for shadowing
  571. 21:21supervisions helping with treatment
  572. 21:22plans um all this other stuff they can
  573. 21:24get experience for um and collaborating
  574. 21:28whereas the practicum students who
  575. 21:29aren't supervising candidates get 5
  576. 21:31hours so that's still still some paid
  577. 21:34time um which is something that is very
  578. 21:36foreign to the rest of us because we
  579. 21:38didn't have any of that okay I want to
  580. 21:40take a really quick break to name our
  581. 21:42first code word which is student so your
  582. 21:45code word for your ceu is
  583. 21:47student perfect so Kai we kind of talked
  584. 21:50a little bit about what um like a ideal
  585. 21:53practicum experience looks like and I
  586. 21:55know something that you really focus on
  587. 21:57with your students you have is soft
  588. 21:59skills and developing those and I think
  589. 22:01that's something that not all of us
  590. 22:02really got to work on so can you talk a
  591. 22:04little bit about how you promote soft
  592. 22:06skills at this start of your students
  593. 22:08experience sure and I mean even starting
  594. 22:10before I started as a bcba um I spoke a
  595. 22:13little bit about my practicum experience
  596. 22:15and not having necessarily like a ton of
  597. 22:17the shadowing time or things like that
  598. 22:19one thing that I'm very grateful for was
  599. 22:21that my supervisor was cool about
  600. 22:25filling me in on situations that would
  601. 22:27occur so like the stuff that happened
  602. 22:29she'd always come and tell me about it
  603. 22:31even if I wasn't necessarily involved um
  604. 22:34so I think like having that sort of
  605. 22:37experience when I start normally one of
  606. 22:40the first things I tell my students is
  607. 22:41like keep your head out of the dump so
  608. 22:45um and and that sticks typically it
  609. 22:48sticks with them um and I've had people
  610. 22:50actually come back and reference it
  611. 22:51afterwards or it's like hey I I did this
  612. 22:53because I remember you saying that which
  613. 22:55is really gratifying I think is like
  614. 22:58someone who's explaining this stuff um
  615. 23:01but I think like there there are certain
  616. 23:03things that you can learn on the Fly um
  617. 23:06when you start as a bcba somewhere
  618. 23:08generally you'll have somebody holding
  619. 23:09your hand when you do your first couple
  620. 23:11assessments um as you write programs for
  621. 23:14your first couple kids and all of that
  622. 23:15clinical stuff like you're going to get
  623. 23:17taught and and odds are it's going to be
  624. 23:19different based on where you're at like
  625. 23:20Blossom does things much differently
  626. 23:21than my previous place so when I came to
  627. 23:24Blossom I pretty much had to relearn the
  628. 23:26clinical skills for the first couple
  629. 23:28months you spent all these hours like
  630. 23:30mastering something like all right let's
  631. 23:31do it over again yeah like I mean you
  632. 23:33get taught D and then you have to go
  633. 23:35learn the whole the whole thing again
  634. 23:37but N Style um which took a second but I
  635. 23:40think the soft skills like handling
  636. 23:42different situations how to work with
  637. 23:44other people that stuff if if you don't
  638. 23:47have it when you first start working
  639. 23:49somewhere and the same thing that we'll
  640. 23:51say to the students um then you're kind
  641. 23:54of so yeah you know because like you
  642. 23:57once you have like bad report with
  643. 23:59somebody or you show that like you're
  644. 24:01not necessarily the best collaborator
  645. 24:03you have to work to undo that image and
  646. 24:04it's really difficult to undo that
  647. 24:07versus like just being good at it from
  648. 24:10the start um and obviously so that stuff
  649. 24:12comes sometimes that stuff comes
  650. 24:13naturally to people other times they
  651. 24:15have to work at it but I think like
  652. 24:17focusing on that just as much as you do
  653. 24:19the clinical stuff um you prepare them
  654. 24:22more for the actual field cuz not
  655. 24:24everyone's going to be a bcba where they
  656. 24:26do their practicum so the clinical stuff
  657. 24:28is going to change but the soft skills
  658. 24:29don't you have to be able to collaborate
  659. 24:31wherever you're at and I think a big
  660. 24:33soft skill that um is sometimes really
  661. 24:35hard and I it was hard for me coming
  662. 24:36into becoming a bcba here is the
  663. 24:39feedback component like I was able to
  664. 24:41give feedback um to technicians but even
  665. 24:44providing feedback to leaders and things
  666. 24:46like that so how do you promote those
  667. 24:48within your sessions or supervisions so
  668. 24:51I generally ask for it but like also I
  669. 24:53think that that's another soft skill is
  670. 24:55like setting good boundaries or
  671. 24:56expectations at the start of any working
  672. 24:59relationship so like tell students to do
  673. 25:01this with families or with new techs or
  674. 25:03with new supervisors setting some
  675. 25:05boundaries and expectations as to how
  676. 25:07you like your feedback um when you like
  677. 25:09your feedback do you like it in the
  678. 25:10moment do you want it afterwards public
  679. 25:12versus private is another big argument
  680. 25:15um and do you like it face to face or
  681. 25:18via like a message direct message yeah
  682. 25:21yeah like we use slack but other places
  683. 25:23use group me things like that so I think
  684. 25:25like coaching that stuff is just
  685. 25:27practice with it I know the first time I
  686. 25:29asked my um my students here for
  687. 25:31feedback was the first time I really
  688. 25:33tried this and I got it back and it was
  689. 25:35a little rough so and I it wasn't
  690. 25:38necessarily the the feedback itself that
  691. 25:40was rough but more so the delivery okay
  692. 25:43um like we talk about sandwiching is a
  693. 25:45big thing um good bad good been a little
  694. 25:47harsh yeah good constructive good um but
  695. 25:49that's okay cuz it was like it was a
  696. 25:51good learning experience you know like
  697. 25:52I'm not going to have hard feelings
  698. 25:53about it cuz I even when I started as a
  699. 25:56supervisor like you said I think I
  700. 25:57strugg a lot with how to give
  701. 26:01feedback um to different types of texts
  702. 26:04yeah because some people everybody needs
  703. 26:05it differently and I think that's one of
  704. 26:07the biggest things another soft skill to
  705. 26:09learn is like it's on the teacher to
  706. 26:10adapt not on the student right and
  707. 26:13understanding like everyone does things
  708. 26:14different and learns different and yeah
  709. 26:16yeah um so you have to really like be
  710. 26:18malleable yeah you come from a place of
  711. 26:21like humility too like you're very
  712. 26:23humble and I think just as BCB too and
  713. 26:25instilling that in our
  714. 26:26students we no ABA and we don't know
  715. 26:30everything so I think you know you do a
  716. 26:32really great job of like giving
  717. 26:35receiving feedback it's it's okay it's
  718. 26:37natural it's normal and you know not
  719. 26:39everybody possesses that skill so thanks
  720. 26:42great job I think so too yeah um and
  721. 26:45then Taylor I want you to talk a little
  722. 26:47bit about how we can you briefly touched
  723. 26:50on it with um like increasing the
  724. 26:52collaboration with Educators what
  725. 26:54strategies can we use to just really
  726. 26:56make this like across the field some
  727. 26:58something that is expected yeah it's
  728. 27:01difficult because ABA I feel like in
  729. 27:03general we have a lot of online programs
  730. 27:06and um you know we're in metro Detroit
  731. 27:08so it is a little more doable I guess
  732. 27:11with the universities around here um but
  733. 27:14we have had experience where we are
  734. 27:16pairing with universities and we want to
  735. 27:19you know get in touch with their uh
  736. 27:21professors and the professors you know
  737. 27:23also be giving us feedback so just
  738. 27:25making sure that you know we are
  739. 27:27monitoring some of their performance
  740. 27:29within schooling so you know in our one
  741. 27:32toone meetings with their supervisors
  742. 27:35sometimes we will go over school workor
  743. 27:36things like that and then you know
  744. 27:38sometimes professors will reach out to
  745. 27:40their practicum supervisor uh to make
  746. 27:43sure that you know they're getting
  747. 27:44experience within their assignments as
  748. 27:46well and I know like some universities
  749. 27:48do a task list type of thing uh what
  750. 27:51what do they call it it's like a
  751. 27:52practicum uh oh my gosh a workbook yeah
  752. 27:56and making sure that you're hitting
  753. 27:57everything um and Blossom also created
  754. 27:59one of those so making sure that we're
  755. 28:02kind of lining up with the universities
  756. 28:03in that sense but in an Ideal World I
  757. 28:06would love if every supervising bcba had
  758. 28:09the chance to talk to students
  759. 28:11professors and vice versa just to make
  760. 28:13sure we're again bridging that Gap
  761. 28:15because with online programs there is a
  762. 28:17big gap there's two completely different
  763. 28:20your fieldwork experience is one place
  764. 28:22and then your schools across the country
  765. 28:24so um I think we're getting there and I
  766. 28:26think the more conversations we have
  767. 28:28like this the better but you know
  768. 28:30there's still some work to do I think
  769. 28:32something that needs to be more
  770. 28:33streamlined is the scoring of like the
  771. 28:35student at their practicum experience so
  772. 28:38like making sure they are not
  773. 28:39necessarily graded and it might not go
  774. 28:41towards their grade but I know that not
  775. 28:43every supervisor scores the assignments
  776. 28:45completed by their student so they're
  777. 28:47not learning the proficiency like they
  778. 28:48might be completing it but to what
  779. 28:50extent is it high quality you know yeah
  780. 28:53and that's like um I think that's like a
  781. 28:55really big inconsistency Within field um
  782. 28:59even talking to like the bacb cuz I sent
  783. 29:02I just sent an email actually last week
  784. 29:04asking an hour's question um a lot of
  785. 29:06like what you'll get back as an answer
  786. 29:08is it's on you as a competent supervisor
  787. 29:10to determine the answer to that question
  788. 29:13which is okay if you like if you have
  789. 29:16like the belief in yourself to do some
  790. 29:17of this stuff but it's tough because two
  791. 29:19competent people might answer it in a
  792. 29:20different way yeah you know um did it's
  793. 29:23judgement yeah it's judgment calls so I
  794. 29:26think that kind of speaks to the
  795. 29:28inconsistency that you get like with
  796. 29:29both the supervision and then the same
  797. 29:31thing kind of applies to schools like
  798. 29:33schools a lot of the schools I feel
  799. 29:35don't have just based on the students
  800. 29:37that we've seen don't have the same
  801. 29:38class tracks either so like some
  802. 29:40students are taking like a statistics
  803. 29:42class other people don't yeah so they're
  804. 29:44getting a completely different
  805. 29:45experience both ways right I think
  806. 29:48something too um to touch on is
  807. 29:50fieldwork courses like within the
  808. 29:52education program I know so I had to
  809. 29:55have a fieldwork course every semester
  810. 29:57but I've talked with some people who
  811. 29:58only had one fieldwork course during
  812. 30:00their entire experience and I did I only
  813. 30:02had one really so and I just feel like
  814. 30:05my fieldwork courses they ensured that I
  815. 30:07was getting those experiences like
  816. 30:09telling me kind of what to ask for what
  817. 30:10experiences to seek out with my
  818. 30:12supervisor so I don't know what you guys
  819. 30:14feel about field workor
  820. 30:15courses I I think it should be within
  821. 30:17every semester and you know a professor
  822. 30:20maybe monitoring that you are gaining
  823. 30:23that experience asking those questions
  824. 30:24um I'm not sure why it's not streamed on
  825. 30:27like that I there's a reason I think you
  826. 30:29have to hit a certain amount of ABA
  827. 30:32credits you know within your grad
  828. 30:34program um but it would be ideal and for
  829. 30:37every University to do that yeah I think
  830. 30:39like um cuz I only had one field work
  831. 30:41course as well and it was towards the
  832. 30:43end of my experience I'm glad I was at
  833. 30:45the end at least yeah it's it's tough
  834. 30:46like cuz it's almost like it it taught
  835. 30:49me more about like what to look for and
  836. 30:50what questions to ask I almost wish I
  837. 30:52had it at the start I at the end you're
  838. 30:53like wait I only have this much time
  839. 30:55left 100% um a nice compromise for
  840. 30:58something like that would be to have
  841. 31:00like each course have one or two
  842. 31:02fieldwork assignments where you actually
  843. 31:04have to collaborate with supervisor and
  844. 31:06do something that's like Behavior
  845. 31:08analytic in nature so that you're
  846. 31:10forcing you're at least kind of forcing
  847. 31:12everyone within your program as a school
  848. 31:14to get the
  849. 31:15same some of the same experiences so and
  850. 31:19there and those experiences can be ones
  851. 31:20that like you deem important sure you
  852. 31:23know what I mean absolutely I feel like
  853. 31:26you know we're such a new field and if
  854. 31:28we look at I don't know if we were going
  855. 31:30to bring this up but like the medical
  856. 31:32model doctors nurses they do their
  857. 31:35rotations and I think it's really cool
  858. 31:37how you know they'll do pediatrics and
  859. 31:39then they'll do uh geriatrics or
  860. 31:41whatever you know surgery it would be
  861. 31:43really cool if every um program did like
  862. 31:46early intervention and then adolescence
  863. 31:49and not just autism even sorry not even
  864. 31:51just autism but we haven't figured that
  865. 31:54out quite yet but I I think you know
  866. 31:56following those types of models
  867. 31:59hopefully we'll get there one day so our
  868. 32:01like almost like a residency you know um
  869. 32:03is similar to something like very
  870. 32:05structured speaking those like type of
  871. 32:07experiences it's just and I think
  872. 32:08there's so many like look talking about
  873. 32:10that right now it's a great idea there's
  874. 32:12just so many barriers that like we see
  875. 32:14you know like with um even with families
  876. 32:16getting attached with technicians the
  877. 32:18difference between seeing every seeing
  878. 32:19people dayto day versus doing your
  879. 32:22rotations where you may see a patient
  880. 32:23and then never see them again you know
  881. 32:25and that's the tricky part how do nurses
  882. 32:26and doctors do it you know yeah I think
  883. 32:28it's I think it's a like it's the way
  884. 32:30that we do need to go it's just it's
  885. 32:32just so I think that those are like
  886. 32:33that's one of the big barriers is like
  887. 32:35the especially with people that work in
  888. 32:36home like you build the relationship and
  889. 32:39then it's like yeah it's like oh
  890. 32:41actually I'm I'm gone you know very
  891. 32:43unique what we do is very unique um and
  892. 32:46I I hate to say like we're just we're in
  893. 32:49the autism area of ABA um but I do I
  894. 32:52would love if you know universities and
  895. 32:54the and the board maybe one day you know
  896. 32:57you do your rotations with each
  897. 32:59population and maybe animals and I don't
  898. 33:01know it would just be cool I I think
  899. 33:02that's such a good point to note because
  900. 33:04like we always get told no there's so
  901. 33:06much more you can do with ABA it's like
  902. 33:08but you can't do it if you didn't have a
  903. 33:10supervisor within that because you can't
  904. 33:11do it if you're not competent in it
  905. 33:12exactly really common one is prisons
  906. 33:15people talk about prisons but I never
  907. 33:17met a bcba that works that worked in a
  908. 33:19prison has that experience you know it's
  909. 33:21like how do you find those Mentor so if
  910. 33:22the bacb could help us like navigate
  911. 33:24that yeah that would be awesome I think
  912. 33:27so too our second code word for today is
  913. 33:30going to be supervisor do either of you
  914. 33:34guys um have an answer for if we would
  915. 33:36recommend that like the entire field
  916. 33:39kind of shifted to having a fieldwork
  917. 33:41advisor and kind of running their
  918. 33:43program similar to how we do I know it
  919. 33:46can be really
  920. 33:47costly so I think there are definitely
  921. 33:50benefits like we've talked about um to
  922. 33:52having a role like that you get we're
  923. 33:54talking about the consistency of
  924. 33:55experience in the field but you can't
  925. 33:57get that if don't even get it within
  926. 33:58your own company so having the fieldwork
  927. 34:00advisor helps with that um having one
  928. 34:03point person that people can go to is
  929. 34:06really beneficial if maybe they're
  930. 34:08having an issue with their supervisor
  931. 34:10one one thing that came up in my old
  932. 34:12company um very frequently and this
  933. 34:15happened to me a couple times too
  934. 34:17actually is when I would have like a
  935. 34:19question about something my supervisor
  936. 34:21was doing and I didn't necessarily feel
  937. 34:24comfortable asking them I didn't have a
  938. 34:26point person to go to that I could trust
  939. 34:28you know what I mean cuz I didn't want
  940. 34:30to feel like I was going over their head
  941. 34:31for things so like The Clinical Director
  942. 34:33and like starting drama yeah 100% you
  943. 34:35want to always avoid that kind of thing
  944. 34:37um having the point person within the
  945. 34:38company I think alleviates like that
  946. 34:42issue for the most part um and it also
  947. 34:44helps with in that situation
  948. 34:46particularly getting the coaching for
  949. 34:48like how you can approach that issue
  950. 34:50because we've been through it before um
  951. 34:53we already talked about the consistency
  952. 34:54between like the experience that
  953. 34:56everybody's getting um and the cohort I
  954. 34:59think is another really big benefit that
  955. 35:01isn't necessarily possible without
  956. 35:04having that one person who doesn't
  957. 35:06actually have their own students but
  958. 35:07just kind of is looking over everybody
  959. 35:09um and honestly and this is a really
  960. 35:13underrated one that person becomes
  961. 35:15proficient in answering questions about
  962. 35:17ours honestly and some of the technical
  963. 35:19stuff that like is just literally
  964. 35:21miserable to figure out on your own and
  965. 35:23all the things that are Ever Changing I
  966. 35:25feel like since I became a supervisor
  967. 35:26I'm like oh my god I've had to learn it
  968. 35:27another task list out and it's funny
  969. 35:30because when I was in the position
  970. 35:31you'll get an email from the board
  971. 35:33saying you know these are the new
  972. 35:34guidelines this is it you got to make
  973. 35:36sure everybody reads those and like I'm
  974. 35:38hoping all the bcbas check their emails
  975. 35:41but if you're not sending out the
  976. 35:42newsletters the updates you know that's
  977. 35:45what we're here for to make sure that
  978. 35:47they're getting that content it's going
  979. 35:48to get missed yeah and in addition to
  980. 35:50like being that one person for everybody
  981. 35:52and creating that consistent experience
  982. 35:54you're also taking you're taking stuff
  983. 35:57off the plates of your other bcbas so
  984. 36:00that they're more able to support their
  985. 36:02kids or like write programming um
  986. 36:05obviously they could build more if
  987. 36:06you're looking just at cost to kind of
  988. 36:09offset that um cuz like this extra time
  989. 36:11they would have to spend on practicum
  990. 36:13they're already doing their supervisions
  991. 36:15and they're giving their students the
  992. 36:16best experience they can but now they
  993. 36:18don't have to worry about doing these
  994. 36:19groups and doing this collaboration
  995. 36:21stuff and some of these other things
  996. 36:23that they just kind of when you look at
  997. 36:25your day as a bcba this stuff just
  998. 36:27absorbs your day you know like you come
  999. 36:29into work and you're like okay I have a
1000. 36:30good plan I'm going to be here 8 hours
1001. 36:32and then you end up being there for 9
1002. 36:33and a half ex really common in the field
  1003. 36:35like it's not it doesn't feel like a
1004. 36:3640-hour job all the time sometimes it's
1005. 36:38not so having someone else to just take
1006. 36:41some of that stuff off your plate very
1007. 36:43beneficial you mentioned your cohorts
1008. 36:46what do you do you set up like groups
1009. 36:47now what do your group supervisions look
1010. 36:49like so we do um we do do a group
1011. 36:52supervision every other week which
1012. 36:53essentially looks like a class um but we
1013. 36:56play games stuff and we do things that
1014. 36:58are more interactive um the students get
1015. 37:01to pick the topics so they can come like
1016. 37:04we talked about automatically reinforced
1017. 37:06sib um last time and it started as just
1018. 37:09a conversation and then turned into like
  1019. 37:11oh well here's a case study here's
  1020. 37:13another case study here's another case
1021. 37:14study and then we start going over
  1022. 37:16research um because someone's got an
1023. 37:18article on it um even sharing like cuu
1024. 37:20opportunities with students for stuff
  1025. 37:22like that that's what that's what we
1026. 37:24ended up doing actually um so that's
1027. 37:27kind of what the group supervision looks
1028. 37:28like and then we also do like a
1029. 37:30literature review almost group every
1030. 37:33couple weeks for our students that are
1031. 37:34closer to testing to help build fluency
1032. 37:37a lot of people know the material and
1033. 37:39understand like the definitions and can
1034. 37:41recite what they were taught in a
1035. 37:42classroom or in a in a book um but you
1036. 37:46don't always get the fluency in terms of
1037. 37:48like applying that to the clinic you
1038. 37:50know what I mean like obviously stuff
1039. 37:52like token Eon things like token
  1040. 37:54economies or token boards like you'll
1041. 37:56see that stuff it's like okay this is
1042. 37:57simple but then you see like the
1043. 37:59different kinds of group contingencies
1044. 38:01like that are just used in the
1045. 38:02classrooms at our Clinic um some of the
  1046. 38:05differential reinforcement stuff where
1047. 38:07it's like oh well you don't think about
1048. 38:09it that way but really that's exactly
1049. 38:10what you're doing um in terms of like
1050. 38:13like Dr or even DRL when kids are
1051. 38:15eating on it yeah 100% um and even like
1052. 38:20with with a scheduled location kind of
1053. 38:23like this we have like the scheduled
1054. 38:24locations that people go to throughout
1055. 38:25the day um with requesting to get out of
  1056. 38:28those like you're on your reinforcement
1057. 38:29schedules fixed interval schedules so
1058. 38:32there's like so many things that can be
  1059. 38:34applied that we don't necessarily think
1060. 38:36about all the time and even as bcbas
1061. 38:37like you really have to think about like
  1062. 38:40oh I I am still doing this but it's been
  1063. 38:42four and a half years I studied it so I
  1064. 38:44don't I don't remember all the
  1065. 38:45terminology right I think something yeah
1066. 38:49I had a student ask me the other day to
1067. 38:50review some questions with her and I was
1068. 38:53like to be completely honest like I'll
1069. 38:54review them with you and help you find
  1070. 38:55the answers but I don't remember like
  1071. 38:57everything that I studied 3 years ago um
  1072. 39:00so it's like a really good point and I
1073. 39:01know we have the study groups to kind of
1074. 39:03promote that for our students too I do
1075. 39:05want to be transparent with the
1076. 39:07listeners as well that our program
1077. 39:09hasn't always looked like this so I kind
1078. 39:11of want to talk a little bit about the
1079. 39:13not the mistakes but things that we did
1080. 39:14at the beginning of the program and how
  1081. 39:15it's shifted since
1082. 39:18then well well I was the field Rec
1083. 39:20adviser maybe 2 years and um you know I
1084. 39:24took it on and it wasn't perfect and
1085. 39:25it's still not perfect every day we're
1086. 39:27changing something or making trying to
1087. 39:28make it better yeah um I really just
1088. 39:31think like how we came to some of these
1089. 39:33things was we had a student maybe go
1090. 39:36through their whole fieldwork program
1091. 39:38finish their hours all their classes are
1092. 39:40done and then you know they didn't feel
1093. 39:42ready that they were bcba and we were
1094. 39:44like oh my gosh like we tried to get you
1095. 39:45through this we got you through this
1096. 39:47you're you don't feel ready what are we
1097. 39:48going to do so trial and eror just like
1098. 39:51ABA is you know we try something we see
1099. 39:54the results and then we have to maybe
1100. 39:55change it so just a lot of you know
1101. 39:58going through those types of things um
1102. 40:00and then I think going off of like the
  1103. 40:03costliness and everything I really like
1104. 40:06what Kai said about it takes pressure
1105. 40:08off of the BCB so maybe BCB when they
  1106. 40:11were supervising they're saying I I
1107. 40:13don't have enough time to you know go
1108. 40:15over all of this or even just Logistics
1109. 40:17of like who is going where who's going
1110. 40:19to be supervising who um that you know
1111. 40:22takes some of that off the bcba so
1112. 40:24there's hopefully less burnout things
1113. 40:26like that and even other leaders within
1114. 40:28the company like though typically if you
  1115. 40:30don't have a fieldwork adviser it's
1116. 40:32going to be on the Clinical Director the
1117. 40:33president and they have as you know now
1118. 40:35going into the Clinical Director role
1119. 40:37there's so much else that you have to
  1120. 40:38cover it's like making those decisions I
1121. 40:40almost wonder at ABA agencies if we
1122. 40:42could you know I would love to
1123. 40:44streamline this but making it seem as
1124. 40:46that important of a position and here it
1125. 40:48is like you are right up there with
1126. 40:50everybody but you know you have your
1127. 40:52clinical directors you have your you
1128. 40:54know billing department whatever but you
1129. 40:55got to have a field workor person
1130. 40:57you know get that spreadsheet out of
1131. 40:59who's going where like are you doing the
1132. 41:02task list are you meeting your hours
1133. 41:04things like that so yeah yeah and to
1134. 41:06piggy back off of that a little bit um
1135. 41:09with that fieldwork position too like
1136. 41:11something that Taylor started doing in
1137. 41:12the position was sending out surveys
1138. 41:15like on a like 3 to six month basis for
1139. 41:17students to to get like some of that
1140. 41:20like written feedback for how their
1141. 41:22experience is going cuz I think like one
1142. 41:24of the best ways to um like bu an
1143. 41:27experience is to like look back at what
1144. 41:29you missed on yours you know cuz cuz
1145. 41:31that's the stuff that really sticks with
1146. 41:33you um cuz once you get in the field and
1147. 41:35you realize that you miss it it's like
1148. 41:37oh bad experience um so really trying to
  1149. 41:40avoid that I think that that's helped
1150. 41:42catch a lot of the like kind of quality
1151. 41:44control stuff that you need not letting
1152. 41:46it slip through the cracks as it would
1153. 41:47before yeah or not like let even letting
  1154. 41:50them feel
1155. 41:51heard transparency yeah transparency is
1156. 41:54huge um and that's something that we
  1157. 41:55always talk about but it's a big yeah
1158. 41:57it's like a core component of our field
1159. 41:59like our students know that they are
1160. 42:01valued and their experiences are like
  1161. 42:03what matters and we're here to
1162. 42:04absolutely do it for them absolutely and
1163. 42:06that's even something I think when we
1164. 42:07interview newb ccbas here one of the
1165. 42:10questions that we ask is like what's
1166. 42:12something that you wish you'd gotten off
1167. 42:14of your practicum experience that you
  1168. 42:16didn't get because we we're we're trying
1169. 42:18to see how like how ready they are to be
  1170. 42:20a supervisor cuz a lot of people haven't
1171. 42:21been in a structured place like this
1172. 42:23where you're going to have one or two
1173. 42:24students yeah um but at pretty much all
  1174. 42:26times
1175. 42:27yeah um so yeah yeah it's a little bit
1176. 42:31hard um so if there are bcbas listening
1177. 42:34who really want to kind of implement
1178. 42:35this within their organizations but they
1179. 42:37are not in a leadership role how would
1180. 42:38you recommend they present it to those
1181. 42:41leaders honestly get the data um go
1182. 42:44around maybe take some polls of your
1183. 42:46bcba like or bcbas and just see what
1184. 42:50their experience was like and what their
1185. 42:52current experiences and see like maybe
1186. 42:54just the satisfaction levels take
  1187. 42:56surveys be
1188. 42:57transparent and not everybody is you
1189. 43:01know as lucky as us to have like
1190. 43:03transparency within our leaders but we
1191. 43:05were able to go you know to upper
1192. 43:07management and say you know this our
1193. 43:10Center is trying to be Innovative in the
1194. 43:12field in general with the N the
1195. 43:14classroom Styles um but we also want to
1196. 43:17be Innovative on the other side of it
1197. 43:19with you know not with the kids to build
1198. 43:21better bcbas so going to your upper
1199. 43:23management and just you know presenting
1200. 43:26some type of proposal a plan and in the
1201. 43:28long run how is it going to benefit your
1202. 43:30company each company has you know morals
1203. 43:33values um that we want to instill in our
1204. 43:36technicians if we can build our
1205. 43:38technicians students into the bcbas that
1206. 43:40follow those core values I think you
1207. 43:43already made your money back that's your
  1208. 43:45return on
1209. 43:46investment honestly and I think um kind
1210. 43:49of speaking to that like when you do get
1211. 43:51homegrown bcbas like people who came up
1212. 43:53through your own through your own ranks
  1213. 43:56um like
1214. 43:57there's blood in the ground like they
1215. 43:59they want to be there and like the the
1216. 44:01effort and the the passion for it is is
1217. 44:04bigger when you're doing it in your own
1218. 44:05house you know what I mean um a lot of
1219. 44:08times like I always use Sports metaphors
  1220. 44:10when I'm teaching but um like you'll see
1221. 44:12like a coach who comes back to coach the
1222. 44:14team that he played for and those guys
  1223. 44:16are like Perfect Analogy they're crazy
1224. 44:18they're crazy about it you know like
  1225. 44:20like I'm I I have blood in the ground
1226. 44:22here like I want to I want to win and
1227. 44:23that's kind of the attitude I think you
1228. 44:25should be looking for like in in the
1229. 44:27bcbas that you get and that's not to say
1230. 44:29anything negative about like BCB cuz
  1231. 44:32I've job hopped like I I switch I switch
1232. 44:34companies too it's not to say anything
1233. 44:35negative about that but there's just so
1234. 44:37much more investment when you were there
1235. 44:39like at the start and you you got to
1236. 44:41build it yourself and now it's like you
1237. 44:43have this great thing and you want to
1238. 44:44keep it that way you know your values
  1239. 44:45align already whereas if you're taking
1240. 44:47someone from outside you not you don't
  1241. 44:49necessarily know yeah and that's that's
1242. 44:51a great like that that internal growth
  1243. 44:54is a great like thing I think for
  1244. 44:56leadership like that's like a great goal
1245. 44:58for leadership to have because like
1246. 44:59you've cultivated this great culture and
1247. 45:01you've built this awesome thing um and
1248. 45:04you want to keep it that way like you
1249. 45:05want to see your baby grow up and be
1250. 45:07great succeed yeah absolutely that I got
1251. 45:10that question when we presented at BAM
1252. 45:12they were like how do we go about
1253. 45:14telling our the owner the upper
  1254. 45:16management I was like you don't know
1255. 45:18until you try and you just got to come
1256. 45:19with you know some facts and some some
1257. 45:22positive things that it'll bring to your
  1258. 45:24company so I I really think it's
  1259. 45:25beneficial at least
1260. 45:28we're going to go ask some of our bcbas
1261. 45:30about their practicum experience come
1262. 45:32on hey Emily hi can you tell me
1263. 45:37something that you liked about your
  1264. 45:38practicum experience I really liked how
1265. 45:41Hands-On I was allowed to get in my
1266. 45:43experience um there were only two of us
1267. 45:45going through school at the same time so
  1268. 45:46I got a lot of really Hands-On like
1269. 45:48practical really useful experience and
  1270. 45:51managing behaviors and writing goals I
1271. 45:54was really involved in parent meetings
  1272. 45:56which is exciting
1273. 45:58cool cool what didn't you like about
1274. 46:00your practicum experience or what would
1275. 46:02you have changed um it wasn't the most
  1276. 46:05structured there wasn't really like a
1277. 46:07layout of like now you do this and then
  1278. 46:09this and there wasn't really a
1279. 46:10progression it was kind of just it kind
1280. 46:12of felt like we were figuring it out as
  1281. 46:14we went so I think I would have liked a
  1282. 46:15little bit more
1283. 46:16structure heard and then what do you
1284. 46:20want to do differently at Blossom to try
1285. 46:23and make ABA fieldwork and practicum
  1286. 46:26more cohesive
  1287. 46:28um I think just collaborating amongst
1288. 46:29all of us BCB on how we're presenting
1289. 46:31stuff to students I think we all do
1290. 46:33generally the same thing but we kind of
1291. 46:35do it a little differently so maybe
  1292. 46:36making sure we're all a little bit more
1293. 46:38on the same page with like the natural
1294. 46:40progression of things awesome awesome
1295. 46:42thanks Emily all right let's go find the
  1296. 46:44next
1297. 46:48one all right we're going to go talk to
1298. 46:50Aisha another one of our Blossom bcbas
  1299. 46:53about their
1300. 46:54experience hi Aisha hi I was wondering
1301. 46:58what is something that you enjoyed about
  1302. 47:00your practicum experience I really like
1303. 47:03to collab with a lot of different of the
1304. 47:05bcbas at my previous practicum plays
1305. 47:08they always gave me a wealth of
1306. 47:09knowledge and always came up with
1307. 47:12creative ideas to like Target certain
1308. 47:15well adaptive behaviors awesome what is
1309. 47:17something that you would have changed
  1310. 47:19for your practicum experience I would
1311. 47:21have loved to like kind of run my own
1312. 47:23case independently well not necessarily
1313. 47:26independently but with my bcva and I
1314. 47:29would have loved to be able to like step
1315. 47:31in on parent meetings come up with a
1316. 47:33plan see it implemented and even come up
1317. 47:36with like treatment plans and see how
1318. 47:37program would run okay and for you being
1319. 47:41a practicum supervisor at Blossom what
1320. 47:44is something that you want to make sure
1321. 47:46that you do to enhance their experience
  1322. 47:49actually kind of what I mentioned
1323. 47:51earlier about having practicum students
1324. 47:54you know kind of Take the Lead a little
1325. 47:55bit on cases and give giving them like a
1326. 47:57case that we can collab on and have them
1327. 47:59see their own like plan go into place a
1328. 48:02great idea thank you so much Aisha have
1329. 48:04a great day you all right let's
  1330. 48:08go I wonder who's in
1331. 48:11here Katie one of our most recent new
1332. 48:15bcbas perfect hi Katie hey so Katie just
  1333. 48:19became a bcba and she doesn't have a
1334. 48:21student yet but I just wanted to know
1335. 48:24what did you enjoy about your fieldwork
  1336. 48:26experience as a student I really enjoyed
1337. 48:29having my own mini case load I think
1338. 48:32that helped me better understand what I
1339. 48:35would be walking into as a bcba awesome
1340. 48:37cuz it's a lot um what is something that
1341. 48:39you wish you had more of or you could
  1342. 48:41have
  1343. 48:42changed I wish I somehow had more time
1344. 48:45or had to work less so that I could um
1345. 48:49spend more time practicing to be a bcba
1346. 48:52awesome awesome and then when you do
1347. 48:54take on your first student what is
1348. 48:56something that you want to make sure you
  1349. 48:58provide for your students I think I want
1350. 49:00to provide them with the opportunity to
  1351. 49:03collaborate with
1352. 49:05me yeah okay awesome all right thank you
1353. 49:08Katie good luck when you do take your
  1354. 49:10first student
1355. 49:15bye I see one of our current practicum
  1356. 49:17students let's go talk to
1357. 49:20her hi Kelsey what are you enjoying
  1358. 49:22about your fieldwork experience um I
1359. 49:25love being able to learn from from the
1360. 49:26bcbas on the floor awesome what is
1361. 49:30something that you wish you had more of
1362. 49:32or could change right now I wish I had
1363. 49:34more opportunities to attend assessments
1364. 49:36um like initials or reassessments
1365. 49:38awesome and how do you envision yourself
  1366. 49:40as a practicum supervisor um I hope that
1367. 49:43my in the future my um supervises can
1368. 49:45see me as compassionate and caring love
1369. 49:48that okay thank you so much for your
  1370. 49:49time welcome have a great
1371. 49:53day okay guys is there anything else
1372. 49:55that you think we missed regarding
1373. 49:57practicum experience that you want to
1374. 49:58touch on before we wrap up I would just
1375. 50:01say like the the big thing with kind of
1376. 50:03the last question that we asked about um
1377. 50:06like initiating this change is like you
1378. 50:08can't wait for other people to do it
1379. 50:09yeah you know like there's something to
1380. 50:10be said for being like a Pioneer doing
1381. 50:12this stuff um but more people do need to
1382. 50:15do it and maybe it just turned into a
1383. 50:17thing where like field work coordinators
  1384. 50:18are collaborating across
  1385. 50:20companies you know like that's that'd be
1386. 50:22really nice cuz the goal is kind of the
1387. 50:24same for all of us like it's to help the
1388. 50:26kids Vel the students help the field in
1389. 50:28general yeah you don't want to see
  1390. 50:29anyone else fail just because that's
1391. 50:31your competition or whatever you know um
1392. 50:34so I think like that that'd be the big
1393. 50:36thing is just like be the initiator you
1394. 50:39know um be afraid to be the chain be the
1395. 50:42change don't be afraid to do that do
1396. 50:44things that are different and I think
1397. 50:46that's a good place to kind of talk
1398. 50:48about this is big systemic change that
1399. 50:51we're asking for and it's not going to
1400. 50:52happen overnight the field um like you
  1401. 50:54said it's a brand new science still like
1402. 50:56yes we've been around for many years but
1403. 50:58in like the grand scheme of things it's
1404. 51:00really new so just getting the
  1405. 51:02conversation started and encouraging
1406. 51:04other bcbas to like look into how we can
1407. 51:07improve the field yeah yeah but I want
1408. 51:10to note that our final code word for
1409. 51:12your cus is change Perfect all right
1410. 51:16guys well thank you so much for joining
1411. 51:18me today for having us fun yeah it was
1412. 51:21so much fun to talk with you I hope to
1413. 51:22have you guys back soon yeah and thank
  1414. 51:23you everybody for
1415. 51:25listening talk to you later
