  1. 0:00hello and welcome back to the blossoming
  2. 0:02together podcast today K and I will be
  3. 0:04talking about common mistakes bcbas make
  4. 0:06and some of the common mistakes we've
  5. 0:08made in our own practices so let's go
  6. 0:10over the objectives first the first
  7. 0:12objective is identifying common mistakes
  8. 0:14in ABA practices to anal analyzing the
  9. 0:18impact of common mistakes and um the
  10. 0:21third one is develop strategies for
  11. 0:23avoiding common mistakes and then apply
  12. 0:25reflective practices and self-
  13. 0:27assessment techniques to identify areas
  14. 0:29of Improvement oo all right so the first
  15. 0:32one I have first Common mistake I feel
  16. 0:34like we've seen across the board while
  17. 0:37we've been working things I've read on
  18. 0:38like Reddit and the Facebook group is
  19. 0:41that a lot of bcbas aren't conducting
  20. 0:44functional analyses yeah like conducting
  21. 0:46functional analyses or completing like
  22. 0:48full functional Behavior Assessments in
  23. 0:50general and I feel like this I agree I
  24. 0:52don't always there's been a lot of times
  25. 0:54I haven't always done it either just
  26. 0:56even I feel like there's that barrier I
  27. 0:58wasn't taught how to do a through FBA or
  28. 1:01like each of the stats yep even in
  29. 1:03school I feel like we were always
  30. 1:05assigned this project and even I've seen
  31. 1:06other students assign this project and
  32. 1:09when we go to like your supervisor they
  33. 1:11are told like oh there's no time we
  34. 1:13can't build for that yeah so some yeah
  35. 1:15like sometimes I just see um only ABC
  36. 1:18data being collected for behaviors which
  37. 1:20is it's really important we do ABC data
  38. 1:23there needs to be more there yeah
  39. 1:24there's so many more steps like you got
  40. 1:26to start with interviewing the parent um
  41. 1:29and getting to know like the problem
  42. 1:30behavior and talk to your text and
  43. 1:32getting to know what that looks like and
  44. 1:33collecting other there's more other
  45. 1:35types of data other than ABC data what
  46. 1:37kind of dat are you thinking I me like
  47. 1:39time sampl frequency data stuff of that
  48. 1:41sort and then also there are other
  49. 1:43assessment tools you can use like Fast
  50. 1:46yes the fast um oh my gosh I forget the
  51. 1:48one q i for what is it called QB QB
  52. 1:51something QB something we We'll add it
  53. 1:53to it later but that's one of them I'm
  54. 1:55thinking a lot so when I was a practicum
  55. 1:58student I really enjoyed like my school
  56. 2:00program cuz um I had these I think I've
  57. 2:02talked about in the past we had these
  58. 2:03forms that I had to get done each
  59. 2:05semester to like say if I was competent
  60. 2:07in an area or not and one of the areas
  61. 2:10that we had to do was functional
  62. 2:11analyses when I brought it to my
  63. 2:13practicum supervisor she was like I've
  64. 2:15never done but I this is what happens
  65. 2:18and every time you do they're like let's
  66. 2:19just make one up a lot of schools allow
  67. 2:22this they're like you're allowed to be
  68. 2:24like make up a client yeah mine we
  69. 2:26weren't allowed to so we ended up like
  70. 2:27doing it I think what
  71. 2:30there's like a barrier for us as
  72. 2:32practitioners we can't do FAS often
  73. 2:34because they take a lot of resources
  74. 2:36they take a lot of individuals you have
  75. 2:38to pay a lot of people for that billing
  76. 2:40they take a lot of time and money um so
  77. 2:43but we don't take into consideration
  78. 2:44there's like so many other fa options
  79. 2:46now you can do like the um modified fa
  80. 2:49or like hanley's fa right you want to
  81. 2:51talk a little bit have you did you get
  82. 2:52to do that I've done a little bit of
  83. 2:55like hanley's fa so I just I don't know
  84. 2:57I like his procedures that he's written
  85. 2:59out he's great everyone else handly like
  86. 3:01that there's been me and you were
  87. 3:02talking and there's been a lot of times
  88. 3:04where you've like inherited a case and
  89. 3:06when you read through like the bip it
  90. 3:07just says like through observation and
  91. 3:10I'm wondering like what does that mean
  92. 3:12like did they see it once did they see
  93. 3:14it twice and like function like come up
  94. 3:16with a function not make up a function
  95. 3:18yeah but like identify the function
  96. 3:19based on want observation something else
  97. 3:21that I've seen is they um have
  98. 3:23identified the function after just
  99. 3:25talking to one person in that child's
  100. 3:27life like if that was the technician or
  101. 3:28just one parent based on one instance of
  102. 3:32behavior but we have to like take into
  103. 3:33consideration that some of these
  104. 3:35behaviors might be on um like a variable
  105. 3:39ratio schedule of reinforcement they're
  106. 3:40have they're being reinforced
  107. 3:41intermittently so we need a sample of
  108. 3:43data before we can identify necessarily
  109. 3:45what the function is and I feel like
  110. 3:47this happens a lot because you know I've
  111. 3:49been in the shoes too where you know
  112. 3:51someone's coming to you like either
  113. 3:53parent or technician or maybe teacher
  114. 3:55they're saying this behavior is
  115. 3:56happening I don't know what to do you
  116. 3:58feel like you're the person that's
  117. 3:59suppos fix it and we are on like a time
  118. 4:01crunch have do quickly and get them a
  119. 4:03plan you don't know how severe the
  120. 4:05behavior may be so you just come up with
  121. 4:07the plan that you think is going to be
  122. 4:09best you're forgetting such a crucial
  123. 4:11part of what needs to be done course I
  124. 4:13think so too and I think something else
  125. 4:15to like think about is it's okay to have
  126. 4:18a a time period I know that sometimes
  127. 4:20there are clients or Learners with
  128. 4:22severe behaviors and I think we are
  129. 4:25rushing to get the behavior plan done
  130. 4:27because a lot of times the technician
  131. 4:28needs to know what to do our other
  132. 4:29services parents need to know what to do
  133. 4:31you can take the data for you can take
  134. 4:33some time and if it's something severe
  135. 4:34you can still block it you like if it's
  136. 4:37like severe headbanging it's fine to
  137. 4:39like intervene and like block that and
  138. 4:41redirect that but you would just note
  139. 4:42that I sometimes even like yeah like we
  140. 4:45want to keep the learner safe at all
  141. 4:47times but I like to like especially when
  142. 4:49I'm talking to technicians like in the
  143. 4:51interim between the time like the client
  144. 4:53starts and I create their behavior plan
  145. 4:54sometimes the tech will be like what do
  146. 4:55I do in the meantime I'm like don't do
  147. 4:57anything different because if they're
  148. 4:58doing if you're doing procedures
  149. 5:00changing things yeah if you're doing
  150. 5:02interventions that's impacting the ABC
  151. 5:04data that's not Baseline you're now
  152. 5:06adding a treatment without like having
  153. 5:08um like basis for the treatment and it's
  154. 5:10so you're not a bad bcba for doing that
  155. 5:13you can remind them like a plan is
  156. 5:14coming I just need to take some more
  157. 5:17data I have a few more people to talk to
  158. 5:20and then we'll get you a plan yeah and I
  159. 5:22think that's totally fine like like you
  160. 5:23said that we do want to ensure that the
  161. 5:25learner is safe so if this is a severe
  162. 5:26Behavior case let's like think of a
  163. 5:28different way to collect data that might
  164. 5:30be the time for the fa so we can have
  165. 5:32quicker data from like exactly what the
  166. 5:35behavior is going to look like I agree
  167. 5:37what else do you feel like is a common
  168. 5:38mistake that's being made um lack of
  169. 5:41collaboration with like caregivers and
  170. 5:44stakeholders um sometimes when we are
  171. 5:48like doing intakes or creating treatment
  172. 5:52plans we are creating those without
  173. 5:55considering like what is necessary for
  174. 5:57the learner's family and like what is
  175. 5:59going to be important to them based on
  176. 6:01goalss we are writing the goals like
  177. 6:03this is what I think is appropriate for
  178. 6:05this learner at their developmental
  179. 6:06level but we need to think of what's
  180. 6:08socially significant for the family and
  181. 6:10if it's if other caretakers can also
  182. 6:12Implement those strategies right you
  183. 6:14know what works for them we've talk
  184. 6:15about this a lot like trying to be
  185. 6:17compassionate and have some empathy for
  186. 6:18what's going on outside of the clinic
  187. 6:21what their home life may be and just
  188. 6:23coming up with plans based off of what
  189. 6:25you see in one place is not enough no it
  190. 6:28has to yeah it has to be generalizable
  191. 6:30to their home life and like you said
  192. 6:32those the treatment plans that we decide
  193. 6:35especially for Behavior plans before
  194. 6:38deciding writing don't spend all your
  195. 6:39time writing up a behavior plan or a
  196. 6:40treatment plan just for the family to
  197. 6:42say there's not a chance I can work on
  198. 6:44that at home or there's not a like this
  199. 6:47goal isn't important to me I don't
  200. 6:49really care that if my child does this
  201. 6:51all right guys so our first code word is
  202. 6:53growth I have to implement this plan
  203. 6:56right CU it's not just parents it's like
  204. 6:58teachers it's siblings like say it's
  205. 7:01like attention maintained will the
  206. 7:02siblings accidentally intervene trying
  207. 7:04to find out everyone that may be
  208. 7:06involved in that situation yeah I think
  209. 7:08that too and something that I think we
  210. 7:09need to be mindful of is like other
  211. 7:11caregivers that are in their life too
  212. 7:13like grandparents um I have a lot of
  213. 7:15families where their grandparents are
  214. 7:17also like I have a grandparent who comes
  215. 7:19to every parent meeting because they
  216. 7:21want to be involved in the treatment and
  217. 7:22they know that they are 3/4 of this
  218. 7:25child's day is like from the parents so
  219. 7:27they want to be able to apply it too
  220. 7:29good yes another one is inconsistent
  221. 7:32implementation of strategies okay so you
  222. 7:35put it into the bip but you're not
  223. 7:39ensuring that everyone's conducting or
  224. 7:41doing it the same way oh my gosh Fidel
  225. 7:44Fidelity checks right so this happens a
  226. 7:46lot you know we're in Center we're
  227. 7:47ensuring everything in Center is going
  228. 7:49great we try like make also making sure
  229. 7:52we're watching both technician if they
  230. 7:54have two or three technicians andur
  231. 7:55they're all getting supervision on top
  232. 7:57of that making sure parents are
  233. 7:59conducting it properly we give them the
  234. 8:02tools but then are we like checking to
  235. 8:05see yeah I have parents join like my
  236. 8:08sessions to do an observation or like
  237. 8:10modeling it like through that use BST
  238. 8:12for them so you do the whole like
  239. 8:15explain it to them then you model it for
  240. 8:17them and then check to see if they're
  241. 8:19able to do it you provide them feedback
  242. 8:21on how they're implementing it and I
  243. 8:22feel like this is the one that gets
  244. 8:23missed the most too cuz when you are we
  245. 8:26talked about parent trainings before
  246. 8:28when you are doing parent training they
  247. 8:29need to be of quality you need to spend
  248. 8:31a lot of time doing them you make sure
  249. 8:33you're providing these opportunities for
  250. 8:35you to check it's not just a checkin no
  251. 8:37you shouldn't just like sometimes it is
  252. 8:39really important for that parent they
  253. 8:41need that like check-in for the week but
  254. 8:42like dedicate time to also learn the
  255. 8:45skills that you want them to teach
  256. 8:46that's where it comes in with your um
  257. 8:49parent training goals you want your
  258. 8:51parent training goals to reflect the
  259. 8:53goals that are in your report and having
  260. 8:55parents apply them at home right and if
  261. 8:57parents aren't implementing or care rers
  262. 8:59aren't implementing this at home then
  263. 9:01it's just going to go down the drain
  264. 9:03that's when you're going to get parents
  265. 9:04coming and be like oh my gosh I see all
  266. 9:05these skills here at the center you're
  267. 9:07seeing so much why am I not seeing it at
  268. 9:09home and that's the worst and then I
  269. 9:11feel like this is also one of those
  270. 9:12things you get stuck you don't a lot of
  271. 9:14us a lot of bcbas don't get proper
  272. 9:16training on how to conduct parent
  273. 9:18training and then they're just trying to
  274. 9:19wing it when they're there and then they
  275. 9:21miss this really crucial step right and
  276. 9:23I feel like like it's okay like we've
  277. 9:25all been there remembering that too and
  278. 9:27I think with inconsistent implementation
  279. 9:29two like yes we train we supervise our
  280. 9:32technicians um like if they have two
  281. 9:34technicians we try and supervise both of
  282. 9:36them modify your teaching strategy based
  283. 9:39on which Tech like technician you're
  284. 9:41supervising because they're going to
  285. 9:43learn differently and we are all human
  286. 9:45like you and I are going to do things
  287. 9:47differently so they might do things a
  288. 9:48little bit differently but just ensure
  289. 9:50that they're getting like the core of
  290. 9:52what you're treatment is yeah I get that
  291. 9:56also I kind of feel like it's okay like
  292. 9:59remembering like if someone's making a
  293. 10:00mistake like it's okay to give them that
  294. 10:03feedback like parents especially I feel
  295. 10:05like this is where people get like
  296. 10:06really tripped up too like well like
  297. 10:08they feel like oh yeah we're working for
  298. 10:10the parent but no like you're really
  299. 10:11there for the client too and like like
  300. 10:14this will help our client if I give them
  301. 10:15this feedback and the thing is yes you
  302. 10:17are working for that parent ABA services
  303. 10:20are so much money the parent wants the
  304. 10:23highest quality services they want to
  305. 10:24get everything out of it they might not
  306. 10:26know what to and they don't know what to
  307. 10:27do that's the thing that's why they're
  308. 10:28coming to to you right so we are the
  309. 10:31professional it's on us to teach them
  310. 10:33and have like provide them those
  311. 10:34strategies I agree yeah all right the
  312. 10:36next one yes another mistake that I have
  313. 10:39seen um uh is failure to stay up to date
  314. 10:43on Research yeah so this is hard too
  315. 10:47with what time yeah you know but
  316. 10:49remembering like we're required to take
  317. 10:51continuing education credits that's why
  318. 10:53it's easy to sign up for a podcast like
  319. 10:55this and listen to it on your drive to
  320. 10:57Bloss together but like Jokes Aside
  321. 11:00there you need to go in and see what's
  322. 11:02being like like what research is being
  323. 11:05published yeah cuz there's a lot of like
  324. 11:07in the most recent like couple weeks I
  325. 11:09feel like I've seen so much good stuff
  326. 11:11there's so much that CH it's always
  327. 11:12changing and that's good like our um our
  328. 11:15field should be progressing and that's
  329. 11:17when we're going to make these like Big
  330. 11:18Field changes that we have been looking
  331. 11:20for like towards Compassionate Care and
  332. 11:22like putting the learner first the only
  333. 11:24way to do this is to follow the research
  334. 11:26and like watch the research grow right a
  335. 11:28way that I try like one strategy that I
  336. 11:31was using for a little while to stay up
  337. 11:32to date on Research I would assign my
  338. 11:35practicum student um research because a
  339. 11:38lot of times they're looking for
  340. 11:40intervention strategies yeah or hours
  341. 11:43ways to get hours so I find like um like
  342. 11:45a learner that that student and I are
  343. 11:48working on like developing interventions
  344. 11:49and I assign them articles to read
  345. 11:52because they need to learn how to digest
  346. 11:54articles and then I ask them to provide
  347. 11:56me a summary and we discuss it back and
  348. 11:58forth so that like not only are they
  349. 12:00learning new research but I am like
  350. 12:02getting some more information from them
  351. 12:04too on like up toate reseearch I feel
  352. 12:06like even LinkedIn Facebook groups a lot
  353. 12:09of research is being published like
  354. 12:10people will share articles they found or
  355. 12:12research they find interesting but just
  356. 12:15even keeping in mind like in the I
  357. 12:17passed my I finished school almost two
  358. 12:19years ago and the research has changed
  359. 12:21so much since then there's so much more
  360. 12:23emphasis on quality Compassionate Care
  361. 12:26empathy the new seven dimensions of Aba
  362. 12:31so remembering things do change and you
  363. 12:34know it sucks we spent like maybe 60
  364. 12:36Grand 70 grand on our education on our
  365. 12:38education but that's not enough it's we
  366. 12:41need to keep learning more no that's on
  367. 12:43us yeah it's it's our responsibility
  368. 12:45it's within our ethics code and I feel
  369. 12:46like it's hard because when I first
  370. 12:48started taking like cus I went and I
  371. 12:51like probably signed up for like the
  372. 12:52dumbest ones because I was like that
  373. 12:55sounds interesting but had nothing to do
  374. 12:57with like what I needed to know
  375. 13:00I agree sometimes like I find
  376. 13:03that well I've talked about it a little
  377. 13:05bit in the past my first like um time
  378. 13:07that I recertified I waited so long to
  379. 13:10get my cus cuz I was so busy trying to
  380. 13:12like do everything right for all my
  381. 13:14Learners that I neglected a little bit
  382. 13:16of like gaining the cus so then I was
  383. 13:19rushing and I wasn't getting the quality
  384. 13:20watching I feel like I like started
  385. 13:22there was like ABA like True Crime P
  386. 13:25crime podcast not no hate but like I was
  387. 13:28just like like oh let me just watch them
  388. 13:30I had nothing like I didn't learn
  389. 13:32anything from those yeah I um like I had
  390. 13:34found that I would just find the free
  391. 13:37ones um and sometimes those weren't the
  392. 13:39highest quality or I would just find the
  393. 13:40ones that had like the most um like
  394. 13:42hours I'd like okay this one has two and
  395. 13:43a half hours I need to just do it to get
  396. 13:452.5 credits but I wasn't even looking at
  397. 13:47what the content was and I was like okay
  398. 13:48here it is I know terrible mistakes all
  399. 13:52right and then we already kind of
  400. 13:53touched on this so I feel like we can
  401. 13:54skip like neglecting parent involvement
  402. 13:57yeah remember guys important the parents
  403. 14:00yes this is their whole world we see
  404. 14:01their learner for a few hours of the day
  405. 14:04this is that parents whole life yeah and
  406. 14:07next one is I know you wanted to talk
  407. 14:09about this yes so focusing solely on
  408. 14:11deficits learner deficits and this is
  409. 14:14something as a field that I think we are
  410. 14:15shifting a little bit but sometimes it's
  411. 14:18not prioritized enough but like within
  412. 14:20reports only talking about what the
  413. 14:21learner cannot do yeah and we need to
  414. 14:24have that because we have to explain to
  415. 14:26Insurance why our services are necessary
  416. 14:28yeah but imagine being the parent who's
  417. 14:30only reading everything that their
  418. 14:32learner can't do we need to emphasize on
  419. 14:34the stuff that they can do and like all
  420. 14:36the progress that they've made as well
  421. 14:38and even like doing something simple and
  422. 14:40like the assessment writing cannot like
  423. 14:42did not demonstrate at the time of
  424. 14:44assessment can make a lot of like impact
  425. 14:46yeah but I feel like when we're writing
  426. 14:47we're just quick like cop not copying
  427. 14:50like we're just like quick let's get it
  428. 14:52done remembering a parent is reading
  429. 14:54this yes and they've been waiting maybe
  430. 14:55like 6 months to get you know since the
  431. 14:58last report six mon to see how much
  432. 14:59their child has learned they forward
  433. 15:02they look forward to it so also like
  434. 15:03noting down like maybe in like the
  435. 15:05background section or like the direct
  436. 15:07like things that happen that may show
  437. 15:09that they also made some progress
  438. 15:11another way that I do this is within my
  439. 15:12like parent meetings as well I feel like
  440. 15:15sometimes we go in like what are you
  441. 15:16struggling with what's hard at home I
  442. 15:18really try and prioritize to like oh my
  443. 15:19gosh what big on are you see and asking
  444. 15:22those like maybe after like a tougher
  445. 15:23conversation like were there any wins
  446. 15:25and I always try to have one that I want
  447. 15:28to share just INE they like like
  448. 15:30everything sucks some days like
  449. 15:31everything feels like suck yeah
  450. 15:33highlighting something that fun that
  451. 15:35happened during the week at the center
  452. 15:36maybe yeah I think that's a really good
  453. 15:38point and I also try and teach parents
  454. 15:40to celebrate the small wins cuz
  455. 15:42sometimes like as parents we want like
  456. 15:45again we said that this service is a lot
  457. 15:47of money for them they're putting a lot
  458. 15:48of their resources into it um so they
  459. 15:51want to see those big wins and like big
  460. 15:53growth opportunities but celebrating the
  461. 15:56little things cuz each little step is
  462. 15:58going to get them like
  463. 16:00and even reminding them there's a lot of
  464. 16:02steps to the bigger Milestone so like
  465. 16:04after they show like oh like this little
  466. 16:06thing happened like well that's good
  467. 16:07because it's on our way to remember that
  468. 16:09goal you really wanted we'll get there
  469. 16:11we'll get there cuz your kiddo just
  470. 16:13showed me they can do this like check
  471. 16:15out all these little things that they're
  472. 16:16doing yeah all right so we kind of want
  473. 16:17to also like talk about some of the
  474. 16:19mistakes we've made cuz you know we can
  475. 16:22talk about things we've heard about
  476. 16:24things we've seen but everyone makes
  477. 16:27mistakes and we just kind of want to
  478. 16:28talk about those too yeah I think it's
  479. 16:29really important to remember like we are
  480. 16:32human we're going to make mistakes and
  481. 16:34like because we've made mistakes it
  482. 16:35doesn't make us a poor bcba because
  483. 16:37we're growing from the mistakes that
  484. 16:39like shows that we like our strengths
  485. 16:41you know all right so do you want to
  486. 16:43start or should I start you can start go
  487. 16:44ahead all right so one of the first ones
  488. 16:46I feel like were I expected every Tech I
  489. 16:50had to be like me in the sense like you
  490. 16:53should be loud and energetic and just
  491. 16:55like all up in your face but I failed to
  492. 16:58realize you know not everyone is like
  493. 17:01that and that's not what every client
  494. 17:03needs you shouldn't like necessarily
  495. 17:05like duplicate yourself in order for
  496. 17:07that to be like a quality session no not
  497. 17:09everyone needs to be like me I don't
  498. 17:11need to shape everyone to be like me and
  499. 17:13I feel like that was really hard though
  500. 17:14I'd get someone that was a little quiet
  501. 17:16and I'd be like well they're not good
  502. 17:19because they're not energetic go oh my
  503. 17:21gosh yeah it's like hard I was kind of I
  504. 17:23was thinking about that too of like when
  505. 17:25I went into supervision like that was
  506. 17:27like a I was like okay cuz that's what I
  507. 17:29would look for and a technician is like
  508. 17:31that's the only thing that I knew off
  509. 17:33the top of my head I was like okay I
  510. 17:34liked how I Tech I need to like and
  511. 17:36everyone told me I was like good at it
  512. 17:38so that has to be the standard right but
  513. 17:40then I feel like I got one Tech and she
  514. 17:43was just like a very calm Zen chill
  515. 17:46person and I was just like she like this
  516. 17:49is amazing so quiet yeah and I also like
  517. 17:52not every kiddo needs this loud are loud
  518. 17:56bubbly crazy personalities yeah now
  519. 17:58every kid needs so just remembering like
  520. 18:00try to see what they do first before
  521. 18:02providing like that Fe like oh like up
  522. 18:05your like voice or can be a little more
  523. 18:08excited or more animated just seeing
  524. 18:10what your client reacts to first before
  525. 18:12providing that feedback and even like
  526. 18:13finding the strengths within those texts
  527. 18:15because that's the thing like sometimes
  528. 18:16we do we kind of look at it with our
  529. 18:19technicians we look to them and we're
  530. 18:21like okay we need every technician to be
  531. 18:23like so and so or just like this but
  532. 18:25find the strengths within each
  533. 18:26individual Tech and also know that even
  534. 18:30if you have a technician that you may
  535. 18:32think like needs some growth or like may
  536. 18:34not be as high quality as you would want
  537. 18:36them to be everyone starts some place
  538. 18:38everyone starts somewhere and they have
  539. 18:40opportunity it's on you to guide them
  540. 18:42and shape them and you don't have to
  541. 18:43change their personality to shape them
  542. 18:45you can just like teach them how to
  543. 18:47implement interventions and like be
  544. 18:48there for your learner I feel like
  545. 18:50that's another one you sometimes I feel
  546. 18:51like at when I was a new BCB I'd get a
  547. 18:54new tech on the case and i' be like well
  548. 18:56great like like this sucks
  549. 18:59change I don't I don't want to like I
  550. 19:01wanted someone that was amazing in a
  551. 19:03ready shade but remembering I could like
  552. 19:06help this Tech become amazing yeah we're
  553. 19:09there to teach them and guide them cuz
  554. 19:11they didn't go to school for this and we
  555. 19:12did we did yeah but I feel like I always
  556. 19:14got stuck on that it was really hard for
  557. 19:16me so yeah it's hard but you've grown
  558. 19:18from there yes look at you now what
  559. 19:21about you um something that I wanted to
  560. 19:23touch on at first was I really relied
  561. 19:26too heavily on DT coming from from like
  562. 19:29a dtt learning background so that
  563. 19:31discreet trial training so when I was a
  564. 19:34tech I was trained really well to like
  565. 19:36provide NE opportunities for play and
  566. 19:39requesting but I only did dtt for like
  567. 19:43tacting and um like listener responding
  568. 19:46and those like things that I would
  569. 19:47consider now like I see them elsewhere
  570. 19:50but at the time I considered them like
  571. 19:51table work table skills that's like the
  572. 19:53only place you could run them um so when
  573. 19:56I became a bcba I wasn't a bcba at an
  574. 19:58Nat setting at first I just I didn't
  575. 20:01think of other opportunities to Target
  576. 20:03so what did you feel like you were doing
  577. 20:05when you started off I like I mean I was
  578. 20:08in another setting where they
  579. 20:09prioritized table work but I was
  580. 20:11wondering why some of my Learners like
  581. 20:13especially my younger Learners weren't
  582. 20:15making progress and it's because I'm
  583. 20:17sitting at the table providing them Mass
  584. 20:19trials like 10 to 20 Trials of tacting
  585. 20:21car they're one they're sick of the car
  586. 20:24two this learner like has maybe they
  587. 20:26don't have an interest in cars I wasn't
  588. 20:27following their interest to like present
  589. 20:30opportunities I was like well he is four
  590. 20:32years old he should be interested in
  591. 20:33cars most four-year-olds are but I
  592. 20:35wasn't like looking to what he was
  593. 20:36needing if that makes sense it does make
  594. 20:39sense and also I don't know I feel like
  595. 20:41sometimes we all we're you know we have
  596. 20:44been working in ABA that's all we're
  597. 20:46used to but going out and like I don't
  598. 20:48know a lot of us if you don't have any
  599. 20:50family members that are around the same
  600. 20:51age as the kids we work with like it can
  601. 20:54be like I hung out with my niece this
  602. 20:56weekend and just like she took for
  603. 20:58forever to respond to some of my
  604. 20:59questions and I was like and I was like
  605. 21:02like wait like that's normal that is
  606. 21:05normal like we don't need them to
  607. 21:07respond in 3 to 5 Seconds like give them
  608. 21:09she took her a long time I'd be like
  609. 21:11come here and she'd just look at me and
  610. 21:14go and I'm like well what do I do now
  611. 21:17what am I supposed to do with that so
  612. 21:18just remembering some kiddos like also
  613. 21:20take a little bit and trying to remember
  614. 21:22they need processing time or like some
  615. 21:25sometimes what's what's really natural
  616. 21:27yeah exactly and sometimes are going to
  617. 21:28say no and like if you give them a
  618. 21:30question and then if you give them an
  619. 21:31opportunity to say
  620. 21:33no two three-year-old things yeah two to
  621. 21:36threeyear olds they no our second code
  622. 21:38word is
  623. 21:40practice another one I feel like was
  624. 21:44that I really like we talked about like
  625. 21:46the cus but I like picked some really
  626. 21:47dumb ones to start with that didn't
  627. 21:50benefit me at all but like going forward
  628. 21:52I wish I did I know and like what areas
  629. 21:55so what areas were you looking to focus
  630. 21:56on when you were a new BCB with cus I
  631. 21:59feel like I wish I took more cus on like
  632. 22:02goal writing intervention
  633. 22:05strategies I just had a few things in my
  634. 22:07toolbox and I was like that's enough I
  635. 22:09spend a lot of money in school I should
  636. 22:10know or yeah you've gotten a lot from
  637. 22:12your practicum supervisors but like
  638. 22:14generalizing your knowledge too like we
  639. 22:17base a lot of how we um like create our
  640. 22:20treatment plans on like how we learned
  641. 22:22but if you didn't have a generalization
  642. 22:24of like multiple exemp exemplars or
  643. 22:26whatever it would be um you're not going
  644. 22:29to like know exactly how you should
  645. 22:31Implement your stuff yeah do you feel
  646. 22:33like another mistake that you made yes
  647. 22:36um one big mistake that I wanted to
  648. 22:38touch on and it's kind of specific I
  649. 22:41when you are a bcba you get assigned
  650. 22:43cases typically like you don't really
  651. 22:45get the opportunity to say no to a case
  652. 22:47you're just assigned cases yeah I was a
  653. 22:49brand new bcba it was my first like
  654. 22:51month of being a bcba and I was assigned
  655. 22:54a 21-year-old adult God who did you work
  656. 22:57with a 21-year-old I had worked with
  657. 22:59adults before but I had I as a student I
  658. 23:02wasn't the one making the decisions for
  659. 23:03them so I didn't really like learn
  660. 23:05treatment planning for only tacked on I
  661. 23:07only tacked on them and like I like had
  662. 23:10a little bit of knowledge but not
  663. 23:11well-rounded this learner she had
  664. 23:13multiple diagnoses she was on a lot of
  665. 23:15medication um she had complex family
  666. 23:17history and I didn't like I didn't have
  667. 23:20any experience with that and at the time
  668. 23:23I wasn't getting like mentored we didn't
  669. 23:25have the opportunity like now I have a
  670. 23:27lead so I could go to my lead and like
  671. 23:28get guidance but at the time I didn't
  672. 23:30have a lead doing everything I was just
  673. 23:33kind of stuck and I didn't know what to
  674. 23:34do with this case and I didn't know it's
  675. 23:35okay to explain that you don't have the
  676. 23:37confidence in something you shouldn't
  677. 23:38take on a Case without competence
  678. 23:40without seeking guidance from
  679. 23:42supervisors you feel like you ever did
  680. 23:44like you went and seek it out or was
  681. 23:45kind of like you left the place and you
  682. 23:47kind of ultimately I it took me like
  683. 23:49probably two months of being on the case
  684. 23:50and trying to like okay I'm a bcba now
  685. 23:52it's on me and I didn't realize that
  686. 23:54like I had the opportunity to ask for
  687. 23:56help that's one of the ones I had
  688. 23:59I felt like okay well I'm a bcba now and
  689. 24:02I was at a place where I knew everyone I
  690. 24:05was a tech at that company I was a
  691. 24:06student at that company and then I I
  692. 24:09familiar with everyone but I felt like I
  693. 24:11hated admitting that like I didn't know
  694. 24:13what what I was doing because we feel
  695. 24:15like as BCBS we're like oh my God we
  696. 24:16pass the exam I should know everything
  697. 24:18now I should be ready to do this but
  698. 24:19that's not true just even like going to
  699. 24:21your co-workers and like collaborating
  700. 24:23and like coming up with ideas is not see
  701. 24:26like saying like oh I suck I don't know
  702. 24:27what I'm doing that's not a deficit
  703. 24:29that's a strength for knowing that like
  704. 24:31we have all of these resources for us
  705. 24:33like let's all learn from each other I
  706. 24:35feel like that was really hard for me
  707. 24:36and it sounds like maybe it was hard for
  708. 24:38you it was really really hard so I ended
  709. 24:39up like I had to speak like with the
  710. 24:41Clinical Director but I didn't have like
  711. 24:43a direct lead so I didn't
  712. 24:44have like going to your direct lead
  713. 24:47saying that I don't know what I'm doing
  714. 24:48and did she react and okay depending on
  715. 24:50where you are you might get a good
  716. 24:51reaction a bad reaction what was your
  717. 24:54boss's reaction um it w it ended up not
  718. 24:57being the most ideal situation I ended
  719. 24:59up having to like be removed I
  720. 25:01ultimately removed myself from the case
  721. 25:03I said like I can't do this for the
  722. 25:05family and I advocated for that family
  723. 25:07and what did she say um my they weren't
  724. 25:10thrilled but it's it is what it is I had
  725. 25:12to do what's best for the learner it's
  726. 25:13not but that's where I feel like a lot
  727. 25:15of people get stuck too they're like I
  728. 25:17don't want to disappoint this person and
  729. 25:20I don't want to like go with my problems
  730. 25:22and like someone's giving you push back
  731. 25:24they're like no no you can do it fine no
  732. 25:25you can do it or here's this it's like
  733. 25:26that's not the resource here I'll try
  734. 25:28this yes it's like I need specific
  735. 25:30guidance or mentoring but we didn't have
  736. 25:32that like those opportunities so it
  737. 25:34really stinks but I learned from that
  738. 25:36like I learned now one how to ask for
  739. 25:37help early on like if I feel does that
  740. 25:40look like for you feel like I feel like
  741. 25:42I mean I go to my leite I'm like I don't
  742. 25:43know what I'm like I'm stuck yeah I go
  743. 25:45to my lead or like if I um don't know
  744. 25:48something I look out like look for cus
  745. 25:50on the topic um but like within that
  746. 25:53it's just you have to admit your fault
  747. 25:56yeah and I think that's okay yeah I
  748. 25:59agree so I've grown from there but do
  749. 26:01you have any silly ones um oh my gosh so
  750. 26:04this is something oh it happened when I
  751. 26:07was like very pregnant I think I was
  752. 26:09like 36 weeks 37 weeks pregnant we call
  753. 26:12like a space pregnancy brain and I had
  754. 26:14like no idea what was going on I feel
  755. 26:15like and a family told me at a parent
  756. 26:18meeting two weeks before that their
  757. 26:20child was going to be out for a day and
  758. 26:23I like I was like oh yeah I wrote it
  759. 26:24down in my notes I wrote it in like my
  760. 26:26caregiver form and I completely forgot
  761. 26:28to let scheduling and the team know so
  762. 26:30the text's waiting in the lobby and like
  763. 26:31walks up to me it's like where's so and
  764. 26:33so and I'm looking around and I'm like
  765. 26:34yeah I don't know and then I like look
  766. 26:35and I was like oh my gosh it's May 10th
  767. 26:38whatever this they're not here today
  768. 26:40they told me ages ago I'm so sorry it's
  769. 26:42okay because I've done the same thing
  770. 26:44but the other way around where I knew
  771. 26:47this was like when SK like okay
  772. 26:49scheduling had told me there was like no
  773. 26:51coverage and I think I just had like a
  774. 26:53busy day I forget like what exactly
  775. 26:55happened like what was the situation and
  776. 26:57then like the client came to the center
  777. 27:00oh my gosh or maybe I told them the
  778. 27:02wrong day like I just had done it really
  779. 27:04quickly and I said the wrong day and the
  780. 27:05client was there it down like I got a
  781. 27:07call I was like on vacation that day too
  782. 27:10like also and so was here yeah and I was
  783. 27:12like you're like wait a second they
  784. 27:14don't have a technician what do we do
  785. 27:15what they end up doing mom was like very
  786. 27:17nice and understand she was like okay
  787. 27:19we'll go have some fun
  788. 27:22Donald's Le they made fun out of it they
  789. 27:24made some fun out of it but things like
  790. 27:26that happened so trying stay as
  791. 27:29organized as you can I was gonna speak
  792. 27:31on that so organization so we joke a lot
  793. 27:33now that like I'm the type a person
  794. 27:35you're a little bit more chaotic and a
  795. 27:36little messy with like how you organize
  796. 27:38in your desk and everything the reason
  797. 27:40I'm so strict with my like organization
  798. 27:42now is because I made so many mistakes
  799. 27:44early on about like not remembering when
  800. 27:46assessments were due and then getting
  801. 27:48like three weeks out from the assessment
  802. 27:49and panicking rushing and I feel like my
  803. 27:51work isn't quality then right you know
  804. 27:54trying to get it done yes or I have to
  805. 27:55dedicate all this time and like now I'm
  806. 27:57losing valuable time for other things
  807. 27:59because I'm rushing to do it um so early
  808. 28:02on I think it's important to just like
  809. 28:04identify an organization method for
  810. 28:06yourself and it doesn't have to look
  811. 28:08like the same other ones yes but that's
  812. 28:10where I feel like a lot of mistakes do
  813. 28:11get made is like you forget yes and like
  814. 28:14to be honest our job has a lot of like
  815. 28:16there's so many due dates parents are
  816. 28:18telling dates other people are telling
  817. 28:20you dates I get like a lot of my clients
  818. 28:22mixed up sometimes yeah I'm like wait
  819. 28:24who's going to be out I know someone's
  820. 28:25not here but like who is didn't write it
  821. 28:28down or I didn't put it someplace no way
  822. 28:31anyone could have known what I was
  823. 28:32thinking right so yeah I think that was
  824. 28:34a big mistake early on it was just my
  825. 28:36organization like I thought that I could
  826. 28:37just keep track of it in my head and
  827. 28:39like know exactly how many hours this
  828. 28:40learner needed for supervision know like
  829. 28:43exactly when my parent meetings were and
  830. 28:44I I forgot a few things it was like a
  831. 28:46rough start another one about like
  832. 28:49little details is I was rushing to put
  833. 28:53some programs in cuz you know it took me
  834. 28:55a while to get the assessment done and
  835. 28:58like we were on like a personal
  836. 28:59questions I was writing a personal
  837. 29:01questions program and you know like I
  838. 29:03was trying to put the date in like the
  839. 29:05question was like when is your birthday
  840. 29:07and I was looking like I quickly looked
  841. 29:10for like the date the's birthday was in
  842. 29:12to put in as Target and I guess on that
  843. 29:14document that one I only checked one
  844. 29:16document cuz I was rushing that's
  845. 29:18whatever so I put it into intervention
  846. 29:21and we taught this kiddo his birthday
  847. 29:23like a day off oh my gosh and you know
  848. 29:26what the worst thing is like I've sent
  849. 29:27that video to parents and no they didn't
  850. 29:29respond they didn't they didn't even
  851. 29:31tell me I did it wrong like wait a
  852. 29:32second and then one day like yeah I was
  853. 29:34going to say how'd you find out I think
  854. 29:35like next R I went and I was like I re I
  855. 29:39had some more time I guess I was looking
  856. 29:41through something I was like the
  857. 29:43birthdays that's not their birthday like
  858. 29:44I just knew his birthday cuz I heard it
  859. 29:46so many times times so then I was like
  860. 29:49crap like and I you're probably thinking
  861. 29:50the reports are all wrong at this point
  862. 29:52you're like oh my God I wrote it down
  863. 29:53wrong and then I went back and I was
  864. 29:54like I checked this and it was wrong on
  865. 29:56that so then you know I talked I had to
  866. 29:58tell parents like what I did and then we
  867. 30:00retach it but like still it was like oh
  868. 30:04my God like I was like do other people
  869. 30:06make mistakes like this everyone makes
  870. 30:08mistakes I think something else like
  871. 30:10that I'm thinking about with like
  872. 30:11organization and trying to remember
  873. 30:13things is we have so much on our plates
  874. 30:15as bcbas like we really have to do a lot
  875. 30:18and like keep track of so many different
  876. 30:19things I struggled a little bit with
  877. 30:22prioritization of like assigning myself
  878. 30:24my tasks like because which one's more
  879. 30:26important is that what you mean yeah
  880. 30:28literally so like if I had a learner who
  881. 30:31had like needed a behavior plan but this
  882. 30:33person needed their reassessment done
  883. 30:34and this person needed materials I had a
  884. 30:36hard time trying to figure out what to
  885. 30:38do first cuz I was like wait they're all
  886. 30:39important I don't have anyone helping me
  887. 30:41like I need to get it all done so but
  888. 30:43I'm like no you need to like really
  889. 30:44prioritize like making a list maybe is
  890. 30:47that you well I yes or I'll like think
  891. 30:49about like okay I'm a brain dump like I
  892. 30:51need to write it down yeah write it all
  893. 30:53down and figure it out from there yes
  894. 30:54but I was like okay this learner needs a
  895. 30:56behavior plan that's a little bit more
  896. 30:57important
  897. 31:01it's just Lear your prior but then even
  898. 31:03once you prioritize like explaining to
  899. 31:05the next person so many people depend on
  900. 31:08you that's the hard part and the text
  901. 31:10like wait I don't have this still
  902. 31:12technician like I don't have like this
  903. 31:13program material or like oh we're low on
  904. 31:16this or you still didn't update this
  905. 31:18program and I'm like I'm trying like I
  906. 31:21you can't you can't just flat out be
  907. 31:22like oh my God I have a million things
  908. 31:23on my plate leave me alone no I'm like
  909. 31:25I'm getting to it I'm so sorry just
  910. 31:27maybe even like I give them I've started
  911. 31:29telling them like by the end of this
  912. 31:31week I'll have something in because then
  913. 31:32you're like subconsciously giving
  914. 31:34yourself a due date I agree that's been
  915. 31:36helpful to me what are there any other
  916. 31:38like fun or not even it doesn't have to
  917. 31:40be fun are there any other mistakes not
  918. 31:41like ones that I like wrote down are
  919. 31:43there any thinking about I'm thinking
  920. 31:46about I feel like we talked about being
  921. 31:48stuck on cases I feel like you
  922. 31:50know mistakes I've made oh my gosh just
  923. 31:54really just not like time management
  924. 31:57sometimes like
  925. 31:58time management in general I think just
  926. 32:00as a field like it's really really hard
  927. 32:02to like figure out when you're going to
  928. 32:04get everything done and like dedicating
  929. 32:06the time to get everything done without
  930. 32:08working at home I worked at home a lot
  931. 32:10in my first year I know we talked about
  932. 32:12that a lot so if you want to check out
  933. 32:14those other which episode was it in oh
  934. 32:16my gosh I feel like was
  935. 32:18it what to do as a ubcb in that one yeah
  936. 32:21go look at talk like figuring out how to
  937. 32:23manage our times we learned a lot so we
  938. 32:25talked about our mistakes now I kind of
  939. 32:27want to talk about
  940. 32:28why knowing what your mistakes are
  941. 32:30important right yeah so you know we kind
  942. 32:33of talked a little bit about like as
  943. 32:35bcbas we think that we have to be
  944. 32:37perfect or we feel like it's hard to
  945. 32:38admit when we're doing things wrong but
  946. 32:41as humans like we are all going to make
  947. 32:43mistakes and making mistakes isn't the
  948. 32:45end of the world it's just how are you
  949. 32:47going to grow from them and how you
  950. 32:48react like I feel like we're all about
  951. 32:51antecedent strategies as bcbas like use
  952. 32:54that skill to your benefit and like
  953. 32:56learn from others Stakes of like how you
  954. 32:59can proactively get ready for some of
  955. 33:01these situations I'm just going to throw
  956. 33:03like some of our problems out there and
  957. 33:04you can tell me some of like the
  958. 33:05antecedent strategies that you would do
  959. 33:07so we kind of just talked about time
  960. 33:09management and like organization what's
  961. 33:11an antecedent strategy that you would
  962. 33:13use to help in those situations
  963. 33:15especially like with programming or like
  964. 33:16writing reports and my time management
  965. 33:18like I put those things on the calendar
  966. 33:20I plan my week far in advance you kind
  967. 33:23of writing like a written schedule out
  968. 33:24for yourself right yeah yeah even like
  969. 33:26so sometimes we think to put on our
  970. 33:28calendar what we're billing like my
  971. 33:30parent meetings my
  972. 33:31supervisions but at first I wasn't
  973. 33:33really putting um like dedicated time to
  974. 33:36work on programs or dedicated time to
  975. 33:38work on like this little specific task
  976. 33:40now I I do that so that I'm like this
  977. 33:42time I'm only dedicating on this learner
  978. 33:44social story so that I don't get pulled
  979. 33:46to do 10 other things right another one
  980. 33:49I know we talked about was like the F
  981. 33:51like the functional analysis like what
  982. 33:53would you do in that situation as like
  983. 33:55what would you do like reactively or
  984. 33:57anly you think anteed um so I want to it
  985. 34:02depends on the learner but I'm going to
  986. 34:04like make sure I have the time and I
  987. 34:06dedicate the time for that behavior like
  988. 34:09data and like I get my data sheets ready
  989. 34:13I going to say getting them having like
  990. 34:14a set of data sheets ready someplace
  991. 34:16where you're not having to like you know
  992. 34:18we'll customize them later but having
  993. 34:20templates ready for you to customize
  994. 34:22really helpful yeah like once you start
  995. 34:24writing a lot of behavior plans you
  996. 34:26learn like what data you enjoy like I
  997. 34:28like my abc data I don't like um just
  998. 34:31free written ABC data because then I
  999. 34:32find my te checklist checkl checklist
1000. 34:35little tuck boxes for them to tell me
1001. 34:37like what happened um because I find
1002. 34:39when I have free open data like the
  1003. 34:42information isn't it's skewed and it
  1004. 34:44like doesn't tell me or it doesn't tell
1005. 34:46me like what the actual consequence was
1006. 34:47they think it was I like to start with
1007. 34:49the free like the free observation and
1008. 34:51then go in and make the checklist after
  1009. 34:53like a little bit see that's a good way
1010. 34:55too I just like to try and put in um
1011. 34:58like each of the different functions
1012. 34:59like possible like check boxes for each
1013. 35:02of the functions and then once I get a
1014. 35:04few then I'll like minimize it and
1015. 35:05specify it to the learner too nice so
1016. 35:08another one I got to look back at our
1017. 35:09notes that we talked about is the
  1018. 35:11collaboration so something I'll do like
1019. 35:13antiently is like have like a form ready
1020. 35:16like who do I need to like list of
1021. 35:18people that I may need to ask about yeah
1022. 35:20is like are grandparents involved does
  1023. 35:23this client go to school let's sign a
1024. 35:25release of info can I talk to this can I
1025. 35:28talk to pediatrician and other
1026. 35:29therapists having all that ready so that
  1027. 35:31when a behavior does occur or I need
1028. 35:34help or I need to like collaborate I can
1029. 35:36do it easily you have the resources
  1030. 35:37available you're not like scrambling
1031. 35:39you're like oh my gosh I need help from
1032. 35:40an OT on this learner now I have to wait
1033. 35:43you know two weeks for the ROI to get
1034. 35:45signed you know all of that and then
  1035. 35:46something with the inconsistent
1036. 35:48implementation of strategies is like
1037. 35:50setting some time to do like the
1038. 35:52Fidelity checks yes you know and that
  1039. 35:54one I feel like I still struggle with
1040. 35:56cuz you know you get everything done and
  1041. 35:58then you're like okay breathe it's like
1042. 36:00I finally got it done it's like wait no
1043. 36:01but then remembering or something else
1044. 36:03now you're like let me focus on the cuz
  1045. 36:05that happens a lot to you're like I got
1046. 36:06this down now let me focus on like
  1047. 36:08programming right it's like okay I'm
  1048. 36:09dedicating this supervision so sorry I
1049. 36:11have to like be on my computer and
1050. 36:12update programs but yeah we need to
1051. 36:15speci dedicate the time to like the
1052. 36:17Fidelity checks and ioa data so being
1053. 36:19like maybe in like two days I'll go back
  1054. 36:21and we'll check that it's been helpful
1055. 36:23for me I think another mistake that we
1056. 36:25didn't really hit on that I'm like
1057. 36:27thinking about now um just like when
1058. 36:29after talking with some of my
  1059. 36:30technicians I've like I had really some
1060. 36:33really really great technicians who
  1061. 36:35didn't require a lot of feedback so I'd
1062. 36:38be like wow great work you did this
1063. 36:39wonderfully blah blah blah and like it
1064. 36:40would just like be like they're they my
1065. 36:43this Learners and great hands but not
1066. 36:44taking into account like this technician
1067. 36:47wants feedback wants feedback wants to
1068. 36:49learn wants to know like how they can
1069. 36:50improve and even though they may be
1070. 36:52doing like almost everything it feels
  1071. 36:55perfectly it's like yeah provide Lear
1072. 36:57opportunities for your technicians so
1073. 36:59they don't feel stagnant and they they
1074. 37:01know where to go with treatment yeah or
1075. 37:03even if you really are like what do I
1076. 37:05suggest like asking them what they don't
1077. 37:06feel confident with is there anything
1078. 37:09you're struggling with are there any
1079. 37:11suggestions you have is also like types
  1080. 37:13of feedback like a feedback conversation
1081. 37:16agreed do you have any other ones I know
1082. 37:18I feel like I've been naming like yeah I
1083. 37:20know I think that you hit them all that
1084. 37:22I would have like wanted to talk about
1085. 37:23as far as Ana seant goes okay cool and
1086. 37:26then remember we were already talk it's
1087. 37:28like remembering that mistakes happen
1088. 37:30but addressing them yes like it's our
1089. 37:32ethical Duty um to like stay up to date
1090. 37:36on like like we said like that research
1091. 37:38and stuff but then it's also on us to
1092. 37:41learn from our mistakes and provide the
1093. 37:42highest quality care and the way we can
1094. 37:44do that is like always growing and
  1095. 37:46improving and admitting that we're human
1096. 37:48we make mistakes okayy I feel like
1097. 37:50that's the hard part though it's like
1098. 37:51admitting that yeah we can make mistakes
  1099. 37:54and admitting our faults it's the
1100. 37:55hardest part yeah and then also if we're
1101. 37:58not addressing our mistakes it could
1102. 38:01result to limited progress with the
1103. 38:04learner so you know that also kind of
  1104. 38:05looks like I put something into
1105. 38:07intervention and saying like well maybe
1106. 38:10I got something wrong here I think about
1107. 38:13this a lot with programming like some
1108. 38:15days I'll be like oh my gosh why is this
1109. 38:17tacting target not moving an inch like
1110. 38:19I'm looking at the data and it's like
1111. 38:22020000 and it's in for a long time like
1112. 38:26it's okay to be like okay learner is not
1113. 38:28learning based on what I think is best
1114. 38:31we need to brainstorm like it's okay and
1115. 38:33this is I feel like one that gets like
1116. 38:36happens a lot too cuz no one wants to
  1117. 38:37admit right exactly I mean that's the
  1118. 38:39thing that's what we're talking about no
1119. 38:40one wants to admit that they're ever
1120. 38:41wrong yeah but it's okay I agree um and
1121. 38:45then I kind of want to talk a little bit
1122. 38:46about like we kind of talked about
1123. 38:48asking for help and seeking mentorship
1124. 38:50look for different ways to do that so
  1125. 38:53like like with my situation I didn't
1126. 38:55feel like I knew where to go to find a
1127. 38:57Mentor or like a lead but like use our
1128. 39:00resources like with the bcba Facebook
1129. 39:02pages and stuff to our advantage you can
1130. 39:04like seek out mentors that way if you
1131. 39:07don't have the many people go on there
1132. 39:09and be like I'm struggling with XYZ is
1133. 39:12there anyone that can help who can help
1134. 39:13me and they're always flooded with like
1135. 39:15million responses after yeah and there
1136. 39:17are a lot of bcbas who provide um like
1137. 39:19ongoing supervision mentorship like they
1138. 39:22have little flyers in the Facebook
1139. 39:23groups and like people are really like
1140. 39:25motivated to teach other people it
  1141. 39:27sounds like it's something that excites
1142. 39:29them so like talk there's nothing wrong
1143. 39:30with reaching out to them and I know
1144. 39:32like I've seen you can even post
1145. 39:33anonymously on those groups now if
1146. 39:35you're like shy or you don't want to
  1147. 39:38like tell everyone you're struggling and
1148. 39:40then figure out figure it out from there
1149. 39:42exactly and then also remembering that
  1150. 39:46if you aren't like admitting your
  1151. 39:48mistakes you're not changing anything up
1152. 39:50that's an ethical violation right there
1153. 39:53right it really is yeah you have to like
1154. 39:55be know like where to grow and how to
1155. 39:57improve right all right guys uh thanks
1156. 40:00for listening to some of our mistakes
1157. 40:03that we have made we wanted to kind of
1158. 40:05get a perspective from the bcbas on the
  1159. 40:08floor so we're going to take a little
1160. 40:09field trip and go down and ask everyone
1161. 40:11what some of their mistakes have been
  1162. 40:13and some of their
  1163. 40:14regrets that's the thing there personal
  1164. 40:16stuff too feel ready
1165. 40:19um yeah okay all right so kose we're
1166. 40:23asking everyone one of the mistakes
1167. 40:25they've made as a bcba okay so I've made
1168. 40:27a lot but I'd have to say the one that
1169. 40:30I've made the most is focusing too hard
1170. 40:32on like listener responding skills can
1171. 40:35you elaborate on that I just think like
1172. 40:37there's too much of a emphasis on
1173. 40:40compliance in ABA and not not enough on
1174. 40:44like advocating for kids and giving them
  1175. 40:46voices it's a really good one thanks for
1176. 40:49sharing thank you for your
  1177. 40:51time Aisha you're here I have a question
1178. 40:55for you as a new bcba what do you think
1179. 40:58was the biggest mistake you
  1180. 41:00made navigating a scenario where I
1181. 41:04didn't necessarily have the right
1182. 41:08competency um to deal with a family
  1183. 41:11situation I had a similar situation what
1184. 41:15was like what made it complex or out of
1185. 41:16your scope do you think it had a
1186. 41:18criminal component to it and just being
1187. 41:22able to navigate that situation and
1188. 41:25looking for more of for in that area
1189. 41:28especially never having to dealing with
1190. 41:30a Criminal component to the case I mean
  1191. 41:33who does I mean I I mean I never heard
1192. 41:35about it until now do you think um you
1193. 41:38would kind of know how to handle it
  1194. 41:40differently now absolutely I def do I
1195. 41:43would have reached out more so to like
1196. 41:46um just the team like the other team
1197. 41:50members like a therapist maybe yeah yeah
1198. 41:52or even reaching out to the supports
1199. 41:54coordinator on the case and things like
  1200. 41:56that yeah
1201. 41:57well thank you for your time back to
1202. 42:00your writing these are great games by
  1203. 42:01the
1204. 42:04way thanks all right anas we have a
1205. 42:08question for you okay hit me
1206. 42:12what you've been to bcba for a few years
1207. 42:14now okay what do you think is the
1208. 42:16biggest mistake you made as a new
1209. 42:19bcba um one of the
1210. 42:22few um was probably adding my texts on
  1211. 42:25social media
1212. 42:27oo that we haven't gotten that answer
1213. 42:29yet yeah um I feel like there's so our
1214. 42:33texts are our friends um you know but
1215. 42:36there's like that professional line that
1216. 42:38shouldn't be crossed and a lot of times
1217. 42:42um it's proven that um we should
1218. 42:46definitely not add them on social media
1219. 42:47keep work to work um we can have like
1220. 42:50friendly conversations at work um but
1221. 42:53nothing outside of that those boundaries
1222. 42:55did you go through and delete them all I
  1223. 42:56defin
1224. 42:57did I I had to learn the hard way but
1225. 43:00then after I learned um from that
  1226. 43:02experience I went through and deleted
  1227. 43:04all of them that's a good one I like
  1228. 43:06your unique that's a good one all right
1229. 43:08don't thank you for your time as friends
  1230. 43:10on social
1231. 43:12media Taylor You've been like in my life
  1232. 43:16for quite a few years I've known you
  1233. 43:17since I was a tech as a new bcba what is
1234. 43:20a mistake that you think you made that
1235. 43:22you want other people to avoid my
1236. 43:24biggest mistake is setting boundaries
1237. 43:27with parents and not answering them at
1238. 43:29nights on the weekends I always want to
1239. 43:32but once you open that door it's hard to
1240. 43:34close so that was my answer oh really
1241. 43:37yeah I had one of those too we work very
1242. 43:39hard but got to have your time off so
1243. 43:42respect those boundaries thank you for
1244. 43:44your time you're welcome bye bye they
1245. 43:47don't want to meet with us but we're
1246. 43:49going to meet with them we got stuff to
  1247. 43:51do they're doing their job they have a
  1248. 43:53job but Emily B we have a really
1249. 43:55important question for you yes
1250. 43:57um so what's been your biggest mistake
  1251. 44:00as a
1252. 44:02bcba you couldn't have prepped me for
  1253. 44:05this no it's supposed to be
  1254. 44:06authentic um
1255. 44:11probably not providing enough support
1256. 44:13for a high Behavior kid when I needed to
1257. 44:16okay what does that mean um assuming
1258. 44:19that Tex would be able to handle certain
  1259. 44:21situations that they hadn't seen before
1260. 44:23um without having me there to help them
  1261. 44:25it's a good one I like that
  1262. 44:27all right Jenny
  1263. 44:29Jennifer what you
1264. 44:32eating pizza all right what's been your
  1265. 44:34biggest mistake as a bcba I was worried
1266. 44:37you were going to ask the same question
1267. 44:39oh no um my biggest mistake as a bcba I
1268. 44:44think would be being rigid and
1269. 44:45inflexible probably for the same reasons
1270. 44:47of like needing to support other kids
1271. 44:49but you think to add to that yeah what
1272. 44:52did your rigidity affect like within
  1273. 44:54your
  1274. 44:55supervisions um
1275. 44:58it honestly I think it just mainly
1276. 45:00impacted my like Persona like my like
1277. 45:04your confidence no no like the way I
1278. 45:06presented myself to the text so like
  1279. 45:08when I like too I would get I would get
1280. 45:10abrasive yeah and then like not be like
1281. 45:14gentle and supportive it would be like
1282. 45:16no oh sh this is the way you have to do
1283. 45:18it so you were providing feedback like
1284. 45:21as like nicely as you could yes yeah or
1285. 45:24like if somebody was pulling for me in
  1286. 45:25different directions like people I would
1287. 45:27like be really direct to the one and
1288. 45:29then be like okay to the
  1289. 45:31other it's hard it's hard figuring it
1290. 45:33out yeah all right thank you guys for
1291. 45:35being so open and trans with us bye bye
  1292. 45:39have a good
1293. 45:42meeting you did that whole thing with
1294. 45:44pizza in your hand what did they say
1295. 45:47love that you did that with pizza in
1296. 45:48your hand but we have a good question
1297. 45:51for you okay what is it something that
1298. 45:53people can learn from so we want others
1299. 45:56to learn from us and the mistakes that
  1300. 45:58we've made so what's a mistake that
  1301. 46:00you've made as a
  1302. 46:01bcba um I would
1303. 46:04say just setting boundaries from the
  1304. 46:06beginning of like a parent clinician
1305. 46:09relationship yeah um a lot of times
1306. 46:12parents are like they use parent
1307. 46:15meetings and things like that to vent
1308. 46:17but sometimes it's hard to like redirect
1309. 46:19get back on track conversation so I
1310. 46:22think just setting those boundaries and
1311. 46:24that precedence from the beginning yeah
1312. 46:26like what the expect for the meeting is
1313. 46:27going to be yes yeah oh I like that
1314. 46:30that's a good one thank you jine on
  1315. 46:34camera you're our newest
1316. 46:36bcba yes yeah so it's your second
1317. 46:40day how do you think your first day has
  1318. 46:43gone yesterday and today it's good
1319. 46:45you've been doing really well I love
1320. 46:47seeing you out on the floor so within
1321. 46:49your first day what do you think is the
1322. 46:51biggest mistake you made yesterday as a
1323. 46:54bcba telling everyone to follow the new
1324. 46:56schedule to a tea were you not
1325. 47:00flexible no me either all right so what
1326. 47:04are you doing today that's going to make
1327. 47:06it a little different uh for a lot of my
1328. 47:08kids I said stay in as long as you can
1329. 47:10tolerate and just at least come back to
1330. 47:12the room before the end of the time I
1331. 47:14like that I love that you noticed it
1332. 47:16like immediately and are already fixing
1333. 47:18it you're doing great thank you hey
1334. 47:21Katie hi yes all right so you've been to
1335. 47:24bcba for how long now almost 2 years
1336. 47:27years oh my gosh and I feel like in 2
  1337. 47:29years there's a few mistakes you could
  1338. 47:30have made right you've grown a little
1339. 47:31bit of course we all make mistakes and
1340. 47:34like you know we talk we have a whole
  1341. 47:35like 40 minute segment about the
1342. 47:37mistakes we made so I wanted to know
1343. 47:40what was one of your biggest mistakes
1344. 47:42you made I would say I think taking on
1345. 47:45this role um a lot of times we don't
1346. 47:49take into account the work life balance
1347. 47:50so I think taking a lot of work home and
1348. 47:52always working at home when we need to
1349. 47:54take a step back and be able to have
1350. 47:56like our personal professional life
  1351. 47:58finding that balance it's hard hard I
1352. 48:01think that was just something that I
1353. 48:02think all of us can do in the field yeah
  1354. 48:04that's great Lauren don't take
1355. 48:05everything home you don't need to no no
1356. 48:07leave it leave it at
1357. 48:09work come sit hey we have some questions
1358. 48:12for you what color is this black oh what
  1359. 48:15color are
1360. 48:17those gray oh black what's your name
1361. 48:20Elina tou your head all right we have a
1362. 48:22question for you what's been the biggest
1363. 48:24mistake you made as a bcba um moving
1364. 48:27programs up too quickly causing ratio
1365. 48:30strain what does that mean so ratio
1366. 48:33strain is when you expect more than the
  1367. 48:37reinforcement that you're giving um yeah
1368. 48:41all right going forward how can you fix
1369. 48:44this um I usually wait like a week or
1370. 48:47two before I like move the program
1371. 48:50either out of like intervention or come
  1372. 48:55up with a different strategy
1373. 48:57M do you have anything to add no I like
  1374. 48:59that that's really good one and I feel
1375. 49:01like we do it it happens to all of us oh
1376. 49:03all the time yeah all right thanks for
  1377. 49:05your time thanks thank
1378. 49:07you hi hey 2.0 second question again so
1379. 49:13what do you feel like is a mistake
  1380. 49:14you've made as a bcba I would say I
1381. 49:17think starting out especially would be
1382. 49:19programming right from the assessment
  1383. 49:21tools I think it's super important to
1384. 49:22always remember that we should be
  1385. 49:23individualizing the goals and we don't
1386. 49:25need to pull from you know whatever goal
1387. 49:28that the VB Maps has we should be doing
  1388. 49:29or Ables I like that that's a good one I
  1389. 49:32really like that yeah it's a good than
1390. 49:36bye so Jenny yes I already like talked
1391. 49:39to you about your mistake but then I got
1392. 49:40to thinking okay can we operationally
  1393. 49:43Define mistake well I mean absolutely
  1394. 49:46it's a behavior right so yeah I'm
1395. 49:50thinking but like but how would is it a
  1396. 49:53beh you wouldn't Define a mistake as
1397. 49:55Behavior I'm think can a dead man do it
  1398. 49:58or
1399. 49:59no is it wait is it a dead man wouldn't
  1400. 50:03be able to make a mistake cuz they're
1401. 50:04just laying there unless the mistake is
1402. 50:07that they were supposed to stand see
  1403. 50:09that's plot twist I know but I I think
1404. 50:11you could consider it mistake I agree so
1405. 50:15uh or you could consider a behavior
  1406. 50:16sorry sorry yeah yeah a mistake is a
1407. 50:18behavior so uh I like looked up the real
1408. 50:20definition wait you did let's read it
1409. 50:23the dictionary definition so mistake as
1410. 50:25a noun an action judgment that is
1411. 50:27misguided or wrong or a verb or using it
  1412. 50:31in a verb sorry I'm not like a spelling
  1413. 50:32me kid be wrong
  1414. 50:34about an action or
1415. 50:37judgment that is that is misguided or
1416. 50:40wrong misguided or wrong so like then we
1417. 50:42have toine what misguided and wrong is
1418. 50:44yeah so this is hard so then the
1419. 50:47question is is like who's defining what
1420. 50:50is misguided or wrong like is it Society
1421. 50:53is it the culture that you live in like
1422. 50:55well I want to like so since we went
1423. 50:57around asking everybody what their
1424. 50:58mistakes was so so maybe we we look at
1425. 51:01like a mistake being the based on the
1426. 51:04ethics code yeah so let me look it up on
1427. 51:06the eics code hold my
1428. 51:11mic do do you think the ethics code
1429. 51:14would would tell us whether or not we
1430. 51:15made a mistake no but like let's look up
1431. 51:18some of mistakes or like some of the
1432. 51:20things that ethic code tells us right us
1433. 51:22yeah okay all right so here I'll pull it
1434. 51:25up for both of us so I just have like
1435. 51:27the table of contents out every I would
1436. 51:30hope people have read through this again
1437. 51:31I'm just using this as like a little
1438. 51:32prompt for myself so responsibility as a
1439. 51:36professional yeah so I'm looking at it
1440. 51:39it's like being truthful conforming with
  1441. 51:41legal and professional requirements
  1442. 51:43accountability I feel like a lot of us
1443. 51:45like had this mistake yeah right like
1444. 51:47holding us accountable yeah what do you
1445. 51:50think so yeah I think like maybe the
1446. 51:53operational definition looking at all of
1447. 51:55these would be like anytime that the
  1448. 51:58ethics code
1449. 52:01is um the word I was thinking of was
  1450. 52:04inhibited but I don't like that word no
  1451. 52:05I don't like that either but how I'm
1452. 52:07trying to think I know yeah so any times
1453. 52:11a violation the ethics code occurs
1454. 52:15occurs is a mistake yeah so okay which
  1455. 52:20but then like unintentionally I think
1456. 52:21you have to add in the unintentional
1457. 52:23part because then otherwise you could
1458. 52:24just be being unethical yeah if it's not
  1459. 52:27unintentional okay let's I need to write
1460. 52:29this out or are you going to remember it
1461. 52:31I need to say it in a sentence like
  1462. 52:32right now right so
1463. 52:34anytime the ethics code is violated
  1464. 52:37unintentionally that's a mistake is a
  1465. 52:39mistake that's their operational
  1466. 52:40definition yeah okay I think that's good
1467. 52:42Jenny thanks for sitting that sitting
1468. 52:44with me and talking that through I'm
1469. 52:45glad we got this figured
1470. 52:48out have you been to bcba it has been
1471. 52:51exactly one year actually this month
1472. 52:54yeah I you feel like it's been year here
1473. 52:56go yeah you still in a way in a way what
1474. 53:00does that mean well I was a qbhp before
1475. 53:03I was a bcva okay so I had supervisor
1476. 53:06experience before I passed my exam which
1477. 53:09was helpful because I got to learn a lot
1478. 53:11about what it would be like to be a
1479. 53:12supervisor yeah before actually be
1480. 53:15having the title of bcba so you feel
1481. 53:18like you got to make some of those
1482. 53:19mistakes without having without having
1483. 53:21the pressure of the title yeah which was
1484. 53:23helpful that is nice though I feel like
1485. 53:25and you have report back to right you
1486. 53:28know like oh like I'm struggling with
  1487. 53:29this like what do I
1488. 53:31do so when you were bcba what do you
1489. 53:34feel like was a mistake you made that
1490. 53:36you regret or something that you regret
  1491. 53:38yeah so I it's such a interesting
  1492. 53:41question cuz there's always things that
1493. 53:43you play back in your head of like
1494. 53:45should I have done this program do or
  1495. 53:48like I guess even like implementing
1496. 53:50different programs of like is this the
1497. 53:53way the child learns best it's like
1498. 53:55stuff that keeps you up at night
1499. 53:56sometimes I feel like like oh or like
1500. 53:59after a kid graduates or discharges like
1501. 54:01thinking back like oh should I have done
1502. 54:03that or after you learned something new
1503. 54:05you're like oh I wish I knew that back
1504. 54:07then right yes yes and especially after
1505. 54:10like getting to collaborate with speech
1506. 54:12and OT like looking back at when I was a
  1507. 54:14qbhp before I was a bcba um they like I
  1508. 54:19just never
1509. 54:20collaborated it was just me doing you
  1510. 54:24supervisor things I'm like oh I'll just
1511. 54:26put this program in because this makes
1512. 54:28sense of like what should be next
1513. 54:30without considering like can he can he
1514. 54:34actually sit in a chair with like his
1515. 54:36proper like posture and things like that
1516. 54:40so I guess collaborating earlier on is
  1517. 54:43something I wish I did more um taking
1518. 54:46that into consideration of like other
1519. 54:48people's opinions and suggestions cuz
1520. 54:52especially being important and they know
1521. 54:53so much more I mean not that they know
1522. 54:55they know so much they do yeah and they
  1523. 54:57know things we don't know exactly and I
1524. 55:00think like my professors in school
1525. 55:02always hounded us for not participating
1526. 55:06with speech and OT because they might
1527. 55:08not have been as scientific as ABA in
1528. 55:11the field as ABA but which like sucks
1529. 55:13because they because then I went into
  1530. 55:16the field being like Oh I shouldn't
  1531. 55:17trust them no that's horrible you
1532. 55:21because now I talk to them I'm like wow
  1533. 55:23that's so smart like why didn't I think
  1534. 55:25of that idea
1535. 55:26or that suggestion or whatever that
1536. 55:29might be I'm glad you learned something
1537. 55:31I have definitely learned and growing
1538. 55:34still as a bcba I love that thanks Julia
1539. 55:37yeah thank you for asking me we talked
1540. 55:40about common mistakes some of our own
  1541. 55:42mistakes and that it's important to
1542. 55:44remember to grow from them our third
1543. 55:47code word is reflect yeah so until next
