- 0:00ultimate goal is to work myself out of a
- 0:02job like my I my thought is that I'm not
- 0:05always going to be in this learner's
- 0:06life so I want always write these social
- 0:08stories for them something that works
- 0:10for them yes exactly so I'm not always
- 0:12going to be there to write the social
- 0:13story for them so I try and teach
- 0:16parents like how I write social stories
- 0:19so I will help with them like learning
- 0:22how to use canva or PowerPoint cuz when
- 0:24you make social stories yes canva is a
- 0:25great tool that's what I love to use but
- 0:27you can use PowerPoint you can use like
- 0:29pictures and just write them yourself so
- 0:31I try and like promote ways that they
- 0:33can write them at home right and help
- 0:35generalize them I also will show
- 0:37families like on YouTube like I know
- 0:39that it's not the most individualized
- 0:41social story but on YouTube you can find
- 0:44like different topics whether that be
- 0:45like coping strategies or like doing a
- 0:48challenging task like going to the
- 0:50dentist or potty training like you can
- 0:53find some basic social story
- 1:00hey everyone welcome back to the
- 1:01blossoming together podcast today we're
- 1:03going to be talking about social stories
- 1:06all right so let's get right into our
- 1:08objectives the first objective is
- 1:10addressing barriers to effective social
- 1:12stories our second objective is evaluate
- 1:15digital social Story tools all right and
- 1:18make sure you're listening for our code
- 1:20words throughout the podcast today
- 1:23awesome all right usra so can you share
- 1:26your personal experience with using
- 1:28social stories in general so I feel like
- 1:31I've had like like I've WR written a few
- 1:34social stories I feel like no matter how
- 1:37many times you write them it feels a
- 1:38little like nerve-wracking each time
- 1:41it's mostly because you know they're
- 1:42supposed to be tailored to the client
- 1:43and like experience so I feel like
- 1:46you're never writing the same one over
- 1:48and over again versus like a lot of our
- 1:50programs we've written the same ones a
- 1:52few times versus a social story I feel
- 1:55like I've it's different for each kid
- 1:57each situation is like unique different
- 1:58you know even going to the den
- 2:00like I could write the same story three
- 2:02or four different times and each time
- 2:05it's going to look a little different
- 2:06right like the dentist office is going
- 2:08to look different for various kids or
- 2:10yeah or what what issues they have like
- 2:12what barriers they have at like the
- 2:14dentist office looks a little different
- 2:15for each kid so I feel like every time I
- 2:18write one it takes me way longer than it
- 2:20should I feel like it really triggers
- 2:22like our creative brain which I don't
- 2:24know I'm not that creative some days I
- 2:26can't find it no and I'll sit there and
- 2:28be like and I'll start looking for
- 2:29pictures and then I'll get a little
- 2:31Sidetrack yeah but that's my experience
- 2:34do you feel like you have like a good
- 2:35experience writing social stories yeah I
- 2:37feel like I've written a lot of social
- 2:39stories um like individualizing them I A
- 2:42lot of times will use like canva and try
- 2:44and like use pictures of the kids or
- 2:46like trying to um take like what coping
- 2:49strategies and stuff that they're
- 2:50working on like within our sessions and
- 2:52Implement them into the stories um but
- 2:55sometimes it's really hard or it's like
- 2:56I want to wait until the child has like
- 2:58mastered some skills before putting them
- 3:00into the social story but I'm like wait
- 3:02shouldn't I start the social story now
- 3:03and like we're kind of when to I I like
- 3:06the idea of doing them alongside each
- 3:08other yeah it's the most beneficial
- 3:11because then you can Target like say
- 3:13like your goal is for the child to
- 3:15imitate A coping strategy like taking a
- 3:17deep breath or counting to 10 you can
- 3:19use reading the story as the learning
- 3:21opportunity rather than a contrived
- 3:23opportunity and I always feel like you
- 3:24can pull it out and use it as a prompt
- 3:26too like here here these are coping
- 3:28strategies let's look in our book
- 3:30yeah that's great I love
- 3:32that um so I mean I guess we talked
- 3:35about our experience with it can you
- 3:36describe a little bit exactly what a
- 3:37social story is supposed to be used for
- 3:39so a social story is an individualized
- 3:41story that describes a spe specific
- 3:44social situation and circumstances does
- 3:47that make sense I forgetting anything
- 3:48you feel like I don't think so um
- 3:50individualized to like what is needed
- 3:52for the learner but you hit that and it
- 3:54looks different I feel like a lot of BCB
- 3:56now they'll use like canva PowerPoint
- 3:59like old school people are like drawing
- 4:02pictures for their clients right yeah or
- 4:05like even I found that a lot of um
- 4:08clinicians were having to just like they
- 4:10didn't have the time to get individual
- 4:11or creative with the social story so
- 4:13they just print one that already existed
- 4:15right um which is like use our resources
- 4:17but but that sucks too cuz it's not
- 4:20individualized yes like some of the best
- 4:22social stories should incorporate like
- 4:24that child themselves like even like a
- 4:26picture of them or their preferences or
- 4:28their interests like having something
- 4:30they find interesting in the social
- 4:32Story one of my supervisors had like
- 4:34given me a tip like if you have a client
- 4:36like a lot of our clients love numbers
- 4:38and letters like having those just in
- 4:40the corner for like the pages like
- 4:42something interesting for them to look
- 4:44it's like the decoration of the page
- 4:46looks good and that'll we'll talk about
- 4:48a little bit more later but like some of
- 4:49those prerequisite skills that increases
- 4:51the attending of the book If like a
- 4:52child's not interested in them they're
- 4:54not going to like look towards it and
- 4:56things like that I can see that so what
- 4:59are the best benefits of using a social
- 5:00story um you know social stories have
- 5:03are used to like increase communication
- 5:05skills they're a good modeling tool um
- 5:08you know they're very like we've talked
- 5:10about probably three times already it's
- 5:11like customizable and
- 5:13individualization um and they're really
- 5:15good at promoting generalization right
- 5:17because you can um work on something at
- 5:19the center so many times but if it's in
- 5:21a story you can like talk about it in
- 5:23different settings and take that story
- 5:24to like a different setting as well and
- 5:27you would have the same Lang like I feel
- 5:28like I love it is all also helps the
- 5:31families keep that consistent language
- 5:33if we've practiced something and we've
- 5:34used that verbage we can put it in the
- 5:36social story for the family to go home
- 5:38and take with them I agree like that I
- 5:40think that's a really good benefit too
- 5:42um when you're thinking about a social
- 5:44story like an ideal social story you're
- 5:46going to make what are the key
- 5:47components you're looking for so that
- 5:49the Lang that the language be that what
- 5:52the child can understand so not writing
- 5:55it like don't write a novel for like a
- 5:58two or threey there's no paragraphs
- 5:59there's no paragraphs that's like keep
- 6:01the language very simple write it in the
- 6:03perspective of the learner or the child
- 6:06so we don't need to be like Johnny like
- 6:09if your client's name is like Kenny
- 6:10don't be writing a story about Johnny
- 6:13yeah exactly oh I like that so
- 6:14individualizing it to the perspective of
- 6:16the child when I'm thinking of that I
- 6:18like to look um you can do it either in
- 6:20like first or third person so it can
- 6:22either be in the perspective of like I
- 6:24use I take a deep breath or it can be in
- 6:27like your learner is Johnny Johnny takes
- 6:29a deep breath um and I like like
- 6:31altering the perspective depending on
- 6:32like what's going to benefit the client
- 6:34I like that too and one other thing is
- 6:36using visual supports within your story
- 6:38so if you're writing like you're using a
- 6:40story that you've like made in canva or
- 6:42PowerPoint making sure you have pictures
- 6:45that are fun that associate with the the
- 6:48story you know and you know like
- 6:50thinking about if you're using clip art
- 6:52pictures like does it kind of match like
- 6:53the child's this is something that's
- 6:56really hard like it culturally
- 6:58culturally you know I was writing a
- 7:00social story for one of my clients like
- 7:02literally 3 weeks ago and he is
- 7:04African-American and like looking for
- 7:07pictures that to like use resemble that
- 7:09child was so difficult I kept finding
- 7:12little like blonde kids or like little
- 7:14like you know white kids kids but I
- 7:17could not find like a boy that looked I
- 7:19found one picture and it was just like
- 7:21it didn't have anything to do with the
- 7:22story it's so frustrating it's
- 7:25discouraging it's discouraging and it's
- 7:26like I'm not that good at like using
- 7:29you're like going to create your own
- 7:30clip art my own clip art but like and
- 7:33like try then you would have to pay for
- 7:34it like I found something where I'd have
- 7:36to pay like $10 $20 to get more people
- 7:39which is sad like come on let's just
- 7:40broaden the demographic yeah like it
- 7:42should be easier to find some clip art
- 7:44pictures that represents everyone I
- 7:46found like sometimes when I run into
- 7:48those challenges I um like I'll take a
- 7:50picture of the client themselves and put
- 7:52them into the book because that's not
- 7:55fair for them to like be reading a story
- 7:56that's not going to relate to themselves
- 7:57and I feel uh I don't have like the stat
- 8:00on me or like but like one of the things
- 8:04that you should be looking for for like
- 8:05IM like the mo like sorry that's okay is
- 8:09that the like the photo should represent
- 8:12like the client for like when you're
- 8:13doing like modeling modeling skills it
- 8:16should be like closest like close in age
- 8:18to the client resemble like the features
- 8:21of the client St of that sort I think
- 8:23that's honestly like it should be the
- 8:26standard is it should be able like we
- 8:28should be able to do that easily awesome
- 8:30all right so what is your typical idea
- 8:33of a social is your typ is your typical
- 8:36idea of a social story a book with
- 8:38pictures or you using something else I
- 8:40think you know what actually before we
- 8:42get into that I want to give our first
- 8:44code word for our cus just so I don't
- 8:46forget so code word number one is going
- 8:49to be moving m o v i n g moving all
- 8:53right so let's get into the next part is
- 8:56the barriers to social stories yes
- 9:00so there are a lot of barriers when
- 9:02implementing a social story so like
- 9:04social stories are great for some
- 9:06Learners and we should really really use
- 9:08them but I find that barriers is like
- 9:11one does the child that you want to
- 9:13write a Social story for have the
- 9:15ability to attend to a book for up to
- 9:19five minutes that's a hard one if we
- 9:21don't have that skill we need to work on
- 9:22that skill first like let's increase
- 9:24attending prior to introducing it
- 9:25because we don't want to spend like we
- 9:27said this is a resourceful time like
- 9:29activity it takes a lot of our time to
- 9:31make a social story so we don't want to
- 9:33be working on this if they don't have
- 9:34the skills to like attend to it right um
- 9:38something else is I want them to be able
- 9:40to follow simple instructions because a
- 9:42lot of times the social story is going
- 9:43to have like basic instructions in there
- 9:45what to do when you're in that situation
- 9:47right yeah exactly or even like just
- 9:49getting them to come sit for the like
- 9:50they should be able to like say come
- 9:52here let's sit um and follow
- 9:54instructions that leads to that
- 9:55attending um and I want them to have an
- 9:58a general interest in books like if this
- 10:01child if your learner hates books maybe
- 10:04a social story isn't the best for them
- 10:06right so if a social story like a book
- 10:10written social story isn't like the best
- 10:12tool for them what can we do yeah I so I
- 10:15think when we typically think of social
- 10:16stories we're thinking of these um like
- 10:19little pamphlets with like words and
- 10:22pictures paired along them but there are
- 10:24other ways that we can model social
- 10:26stories right so one way I really love
- 10:29video modeling have you used it in the
- 10:31past so I haven't necessarily used it
- 10:34for any clients per se but it was like
- 10:37one of my last projects before I became
- 10:39bcba and one of the barriers was it was
- 10:42hard to go and make like these videos
- 10:45and you know what we tried to do is
- 10:47instead of adults being the models we
- 10:49wanted other children to be the models
- 10:52and you know if I could do it again I
- 10:53probably would have had like a younger
- 10:55sibling that could follow my
- 10:58instructions my models but I don't know
- 11:01I thought maybe like clients in the
- 11:02center I was going to say yeah so you
- 11:04using clients in the center as your
- 11:05models I mean some of them could model
- 11:07were but then like getting consent forms
- 11:09and all that was really hard I feel like
- 11:11I should do it we need to do it again
- 11:14maybe find some like models that are
- 11:16easy to like that can follow
- 11:18instructions the parents approve that
- 11:21make videos for that would make it a lot
- 11:23easier right so like with these video
- 11:24modeling there's like different formats
- 11:26of them so like a um you could have like
- 11:28simp video models where it's just like a
- 11:32couple like two three actions and two
- 11:34three sentences and just a very short
- 11:36video model or you can have like the
- 11:38whole story is like acted out like in
- 11:41scenarios but those are tricky to find
- 11:43like those resources don't totally exist
- 11:45yet and there I went on YouTube and like
- 11:48before we like started searching this
- 11:49and I just wrote social stories for like
- 11:51going to the dentist and what was kind
- 11:53of in like I didn't see any video models
- 11:55but I saw a lot of like social stories
- 11:57just being read aloud so wonder if a lot
- 11:59of like the resources just look like
- 12:01that right I think they do so it's like
- 12:04it's the same one that we're thinking of
- 12:07but just in a video form which is
- 12:09beneficial um in a sense like because it
- 12:12makes it more accessible to families but
- 12:14it's like we're not getting to that like
- 12:15video model no some things that I've
- 12:18done in the past is if a child has like
- 12:20some skills that we're working on at the
- 12:22center and they're mastering them I
- 12:23don't know if you've ran into this your
- 12:24child is mastering skills at the center
- 12:26but then they like the parents like oh
- 12:28my gosh they will not do at home like
- 12:30they are really struggling I'll use the
- 12:32learner themselves to create their
- 12:34social story um it has to be a learner
- 12:37who has these um like learning they're
- 12:40at that stage of learning where they can
- 12:41like follow those instructions and kind
- 12:43of like model it out for you but some
- 12:45I've had a learner who like they really
- 12:46loved like taking pictures of themselves
- 12:49and watching videos so we would like
- 12:51take videos of them completing like the
- 12:53tasks at the center and then they would
- 12:56show them that at home and they were
- 12:58able to like replicate that as their
- 12:59video model or their video social story
- 13:01it's amazing and I love that idea I feel
- 13:03like I've never thought of it I'm
- 13:05definitely going to use it going forward
- 13:06I hope so um so when you're like working
- 13:10on social stories what do you typically
- 13:11think of I feel like I typically think
- 13:14of like you know the written books okay
- 13:16you know and like I've always feel like
- 13:18I some things I've started doing is like
- 13:20for games and stuff specific I've been
- 13:22youtubing like the game like I wanted to
- 13:24teach like one of my clients to play Red
- 13:26Rover so I just youtubed Red Rover found
- 13:29like young kids just like act like
- 13:31telling the rules and acting out the
- 13:33games with them themselves so that's
- 13:35what I'm thinking of when I like think
- 13:36of video social yeah see I like to shift
- 13:39sometimes like I think video social
- 13:41stories are really great but I think
- 13:44that what I enjoy more is just like that
- 13:46video model as a learning tool more than
- 13:49the social story itself because when you
- 13:51think of videos a lot of our Learners
- 13:54love their tablets they love YouTube so
- 13:56it's something that they are generally
- 13:57already interested in so getting them to
- 14:00like look at the screen is much easier
- 14:01so I use like a video model it doesn't
- 14:03necessarily have to be um like a written
- 14:07out story story and I think that's where
- 14:08it gets a little confused because when
- 14:10we think of social stories we're like oh
- 14:11well we need to use that like same ver
- 14:13like that language and put it in the
- 14:14story versus like with the video model
- 14:16it just could be like the scenario acted
- 14:18out yeah exactly and I think there are
- 14:20benefits to both and it's that's why our
- 14:22treatment and ABA like we want so
- 14:23individualized so individualized we
- 14:25really want to focus on that so like we
- 14:27can some Learners might benefit best
- 14:29from a written out social story but
- 14:30other Learners might need a video model
- 14:32instead and I think about how many time
- 14:35I don't know how many times you've been
- 14:36at the center and you've written like a
- 14:37social like a written social story and
- 14:38how many times it gets lost yeah oh my
- 14:41gosh where like I have coverage
- 14:42technicians and they like misplace it
- 14:44and then the next day they come in
- 14:45they're like well has anyone seen it
- 14:47then getting it printed and laminated
- 14:49again is hard oh my gosh the material
- 14:51the loss of materials is one of my
- 14:53biggest big barrier it's a barrier to me
- 14:56it's a barrier to the family it's a
- 14:57barrier to the technician yeah and it's
- 14:59even harder I feel like when I send a
- 15:00social story home oh my gosh yeah like
- 15:02the dog ate it siing in backpack and
- 15:06it's like I so I feel like when you have
- 15:08it on your phone or on your tablet you
- 15:10can use it anywhere and like you're not
- 15:13losing it the chances of you losing it
- 15:15are very slim unless it gets deleted
- 15:17then deleted again and it's like but
- 15:18you'll always have a backup which and
- 15:21it's easy to send you don't have to
- 15:22laminate it you don't have to print it
- 15:23out he like okay you lost it here let me
- 15:25just email it to you again yeah no I do
- 15:27like having um like the video model on
- 15:29the phone and then even like that social
- 15:30story like that's the benefit of the day
- 15:33and age we're living in is we have
- 15:34technology so let's utilize it to our
- 15:36advantage all these tools that are here
- 15:38to our benefit while we were doing some
- 15:40of the research right like uh like I was
- 15:43like what resources are there for like
- 15:46families and one interesting thing I was
- 15:48like was that
- 15:50sofa you read the sofa article right so
- 15:53there's an app called the sofa and it's
- 15:56supposed to be in theory in theory it's
- 15:59supposed to make the writing social
- 16:01stories and accessing social stories a
- 16:03lot easier but when I I downloaded it so
- 16:08what what did you find the barriers to
- 16:10using the app were well I felt like it
- 16:12just it lagged a little which like
- 16:14whatever it's like under construction
- 16:16probably it was like a little boring
- 16:19like you know and I felt like I thought
- 16:21I was going to get an app with like cool
- 16:23anim like it's an app so I thought there
- 16:25would be like animation stuff even clip
- 16:27art like individual part and stuff and
- 16:30you know it wasn't it was kind of boring
- 16:32fny let me like pull up like what the
- 16:34like the data showed right the
- 16:36implications or the findings were that
- 16:38highlighted the benefits of digital
- 16:40stories over traditional methods due to
- 16:42its accessibility customization options
- 16:45and the ability to collect valuable user
- 16:47data to improve intervention strategies
- 16:49okay but you know when I downloaded it I
- 16:52didn't feel that way but you know I
- 16:53trust our
- 16:54data valid data is valid so I wonder if
- 16:58even just writing like social stories
- 17:00like on apps and stuff that's what I was
- 17:02going to say so like maybe there's a way
- 17:03that we can like replicate the way that
- 17:05the sofa app the theoretical way that it
- 17:08was supposed to be used like maybe using
- 17:09canva can you talk about like when you
- 17:11use canva how you best format your
- 17:13social stories for your learner I always
- 17:16I make it a PowerPoint because I feel
- 17:17like when I make it a PowerPoint it
- 17:19prints easy you can print it in the
- 17:22multiple pages I can make it any size I
- 17:24want I can make it a full page or I can
- 17:25make four slides to one page where it's
- 17:27like maybe this size
- 17:29and then I feel like after that wait was
- 17:33I going with this canva how do you use
- 17:35canva what are your strategies so those
- 17:37are my key strategies and then I'll try
- 17:39to like make it fun exciting try to use
- 17:42like client's favorite colors try to use
- 17:45real pictures I do like I mentioned
- 17:48before like the numbers on the bottom if
- 17:49they're interested in numbers if there's
- 17:51if I'm writing like about stuff like no
- 17:55like the word no or like no don't do
- 17:57that that's not good I Tred to use the
- 17:59color red for like the it's a prompt
- 18:02like red is no like stop and then I try
- 18:04to use green sometimes for like the
- 18:06things I want them to I like that so
- 18:08you're individualizing like the phrasing
- 18:10and then that probably draws the like
- 18:12one the learner's attention to it but
- 18:14the reader too so that they know like to
- 18:16emphasize like if you're sharing it with
- 18:18a parent they can now know like this is
- 18:20how to emphasize this area and I do like
- 18:22the Bold sometimes like read this like
- 18:24that uh some other things I will do is I
- 18:27try to keep the font really simple and
- 18:30on canva you can get real wild you can
- 18:33get wild but we don't need to this is
- 18:34the time let's keep the font simple what
- 18:36we want to get across is those images
- 18:38because that's what's going to draw the
- 18:39Learner in and we want to like focus on
- 18:42the Simplicity of the language and the
- 18:44font as well do you have any suggestions
- 18:46for when you do it I feel like you're
- 18:48good at this you're like a social story
- 18:49Queen I love social stories honestly
- 18:51I've learned a lot of my tips from um
- 18:53we've mentioned Jenny before we Jenny
- 18:55just on just we just need to bring Jenny
- 18:57on once um so she at she was a student
- 19:00and created a social story for me at one
- 19:02point on um flying in the airplane oh
- 19:05did she she like can Photoshop guys she
- 19:08like will Photoshop the did she
- 19:09Photoshop the kid and she yeah so there
- 19:11was like an airplane and it has like the
- 19:13four windows and then there's like a
- 19:15little circle and she put the client's
- 19:17face in the circle and it was like he
- 19:19was flying in the airplane and so I've
- 19:21learned a lot from her I always joke
- 19:23with her that she should like just start
- 19:24selling them on Teachers Pay Teachers
- 19:26because her social stories are just
- 19:27fantastic I honestly speaking on her
- 19:30still like I remember she wrote a social
- 19:31store for like going to bed and she had
- 19:34like the nighttime sky with like stars
- 19:36and like in the moon she put like the
- 19:38little client's head that's really know
- 19:40I was like we used to look at it just
- 19:41like how cute is that so yes so I
- 19:44learned a lot from her like I like she
- 19:46made me one as um she was working on
- 19:48like a student project for me and so
- 19:50then I like took it I was like oh my
- 19:51gosh I need to duplicate this for my
- 19:52other like social story so now I'll
- 19:54start doing that so in canva you can
- 19:56select like shapes to with an image so I
- 19:59will always now put the client's face
- 20:01into the social story we should you know
- 20:04what we should we should have write her
- 20:05write or you write a task analysis on
- 20:07how to use canva to do this you know
- 20:10what that'll be a resource that we'll
- 20:11put in the description great
- 20:13idea um so I really I like to do that I
- 20:16too like to individualize the language
- 20:18something that I think um gets not
- 20:22really thought about is like let's not
- 20:24make this story super long and lengthy
- 20:27like to get your point across 15 SL like
- 20:2915 pages no I usually keep it between
- 20:31four and five because that's what my
- 20:33learner is going to attend to and like I
- 20:34try and keep one to two pages about
- 20:36preference activities and items and then
- 20:38like then I'll get to like the learning
- 20:40topic if that's like the hard part of
- 20:42flying in an airplane or like the
- 20:43negative part of being in the potty like
- 20:45I don't want the negativity to like
- 20:47overwhelm the whole story like I want to
- 20:50have some preference in there because
- 20:51we're trying to pair this activity and
- 20:53the learner with like the uh concept
- 20:55itself and their preferred activities
- 20:57too yeah I like that yeah all right so I
- 21:01have a code word I have my second code
- 21:04word is going to be dentist I've written
- 21:07so many stories about dentists how do
- 21:09you promote your like social stories or
- 21:11how do you train parents to implement
- 21:14social stories at home yeah so I
- 21:17typically will start like I'll make
- 21:19social stories for my families initially
- 21:22so I will make the social story and I
- 21:24try to bring parents into a training or
- 21:27a parent meeting where observe the um
- 21:30like either me or the technician
- 21:31utilizing the social story but my
- 21:33ultimate goal is to work myself out of a
- 21:35job like my I my thought is that I'm not
- 21:39always going to be in this learner's
- 21:40life so I want I can't always write
- 21:42these social stories for them something
- 21:44that works for them yes exactly so I'm
- 21:46not always going to be there to write
- 21:46the social story for them so I try and
- 21:49teach parents like how I write social
- 21:52stories so I will help with them like
- 21:55learning how to use canva or PowerPoint
- 21:57cuz when you make social stories yes
- 21:59canva is a great tool that's what I love
- 22:00to use but you can use PowerPoint you
- 22:01can use like pictures and just write
- 22:04them yourself so I try and like promote
- 22:06ways that they can write them at home
- 22:08right and help generalize them I also
- 22:10will show families like on YouTube like
- 22:12I know that it's not the most
- 22:14individualized social story but on
- 22:16YouTube you can find like different
- 22:18topics whether that be like coping
- 22:20strategies or like doing a challenging
- 22:23task like going to the dentist or potty
- 22:26training like you can find some basic
- 22:27social stories that can grow with them
- 22:29as they get older like going to the
- 22:30grocery store paying at the grocery
- 22:32store of that sort so I find those
- 22:34things on YouTube so I show parents
- 22:36where to find these resources so that
- 22:37they can utilize them when I'm hopefully
- 22:40not there for them like they graduate
- 22:42from us and they I want them to be able
- 22:43to use these resources still and it's
- 22:45important that the parents know that
- 22:47there should be a clear objective to the
- 22:48social story too right you know so yeah
- 22:51can you speak a little bit on
- 22:52that we want to make sure that you have
- 22:55a clear objective meaning you're either
- 22:57like teaching a new you're working on
- 22:59like showing them what the new
- 23:01environment may look like stuff of that
- 23:03sort yes so like the learning yeah like
- 23:05you said the learning objective has to
- 23:06be clear so what you are trying to gear
- 23:09this towards that should be the main
- 23:11focus and it has to like be within that
- 23:13story right all right and then do you
- 23:16feel like so you train them on where to
- 23:18find the resources kind of how to read
- 23:20them how to read them to the learner
- 23:22when to use them so like I'll write it
- 23:24within my behavior plan as like one of
- 23:26my behavior plan goals for parents a lot
- 23:27of times be the proactive strategy it's
- 23:30a proactive strategy so parent will
- 23:32introduce um social story once per day
- 23:35for five you know days in a row or
- 23:37whatever is reported by parent so that
- 23:39they know how to use the social story
- 23:41throughout the day we don't have to be
- 23:42providing and we don't need to listen to
- 23:43it every five minutes I was going to say
- 23:46like don't present it 30 times a day
- 23:48because then it's going to become
- 23:48aversive so like I'm yes teaching them
- 23:51like when to use it and how to use it um
- 23:53how to create their own um and then
- 23:56where to find other resources because
- 23:58sometimes you don't have time to like
- 23:59write a whole social story we did say
- 24:00it's a res A busy life exactly all right
- 24:04so before we end what's your favorite
- 24:06social story Ben that you've written or
- 24:08that you've read my favorite social
- 24:10story that I have written I did one on
- 24:13sharing toys with a sibling and I really
- 24:15liked that one um that my learner really
- 24:18enjoyed it it had him and his brother in
- 24:19it so he liked like and he labeled him
- 24:22and his brother's name and like it had
- 24:24all toys that they really enjoyed in
- 24:26there so it was just really fun the
- 24:27learner was really interested in it so I
- 24:29liked that one my favorite one was
- 24:32riding one about going to the airport
- 24:34and riding an airplane because the
- 24:36parents actually got to go like in our
- 24:38area we have the like the airport event
- 24:41where they families can go beforeand
- 24:44what's it called I forget what it's
- 24:45called I feel it's coming up in the next
- 24:46few weeks we'll we'll link it down below
- 24:48or yes there's one in Michigan so I had
- 24:50the family go to that before and they
- 24:51took pictures of everything in the plane
- 24:54and in the airport and then they sent it
- 24:55to me and I put it in their social he so
- 24:58ready by the time it was time to go and
- 25:01he with he was so excited that's so cute
- 25:04I love that all right and then one last
- 25:07code word before we end right our final
- 25:09code word for the day is actually plane
- 25:11ride it goes hand in hand with your
- 25:12story all right everyone thank you for
- 25:15listening we'll see you guys next
- 25:19week all right guys thank you so much
