- 0:00hey guys we wanted to just make a quick
- 0:02announcement and instead of doing the
- 0:04quiz this week for your ceu we are going
- 0:07to do code wordss so throughout the
- 0:09episode keep an ear out for three
- 0:11different code words and fill them into
- 0:13the link below now let's dive into
- 0:15episode three hey guys welcome back to
- 0:17the blossoming together podcast today
- 0:19we're kind of going to be talking about
- 0:21new tips for new bcbas so Cen do you
- 0:24kind of want to start talking about your
- 0:26practicum experience yeah um I had a
- 0:29pretty
- 0:30I loved my practicum experience I I
- 0:32think we talked a little bit in the past
- 0:34I really advocated for what I wanted
- 0:36from my practicum experience um it
- 0:38started off really handson um like I
- 0:42wanted to acquire a lot of skills early
- 0:44on so like assessments and stuff um and
- 0:46just get involved in parent meetings and
- 0:49just really big hands on projects but
- 0:51then Co happened so how how far along
- 0:54were you before Co I was my first
- 0:57semester so like my first semester was
- 1:00in person and then I like did my
- 1:01practicum and then Co hit right so then
- 1:03I became a CO like student and I it
- 1:07really it kind of sucked because I I
- 1:09really did love Hands-On learning and
- 1:11then I like my Center shut down but I
- 1:13was still collecting my hours so I was
- 1:15really just working on like program
- 1:17writing and report writing which I felt
- 1:20already skilled in and I wanted to like
- 1:22get more Excel you wanted more yeah I
- 1:24wanted more I wanted to like learn those
- 1:26little tricks and things that you needed
- 1:28as a bcba whereas like I didn't want to
- 1:30just keep working on the same thing over
- 1:32and over again and like I'm really glad
- 1:34I got skilled in those things but I
- 1:36needed more not just ch Out
- 1:38hours get some kind of experience out of
- 1:41it use yeah the 1500 hours like in
- 1:44theory you're supposed to be getting all
- 1:45the knowledge that you need to become a
- 1:47bcba but I felt like I was just doing
- 1:49things to meet the hours rather than
- 1:51like getting quality time from it yeah
- 1:54well so do you feel like at the end you
- 1:56were able to get that cuz you went back
- 1:59right yeah went back for the end of I
- 2:01think it was the last maybe last two
- 2:03semesters of my practicum experience so
- 2:06then I did go back and I really really
- 2:08during that time I had to like cram
- 2:09everything I wanted to know in during
- 2:11that period how long did it how long did
- 2:13you have to cram I think it was three
- 2:15months before so I finished yeah I
- 2:18finished my cour work before um you
- 2:21finished your hours I did my hours at
- 2:23the same time finishing my coursework
- 2:25but I had three months before I was
- 2:26taking I like set aside three months so
- 2:28that I could study for the exam so I had
- 2:30like three months to finish up
- 2:32everything that's hard though it was
- 2:34really hard because you feel like you
- 2:36have almost a year usually get all your
- 2:39hours and it's spread out you know you
- 2:41start with kind of the easier stuff and
- 2:43you work your way up to the harder
- 2:45things like most of your time was spent
- 2:47doing kind of that level one practicum
- 2:50experience I did a lot of level one
- 2:52stuff pretty much the entire entirety of
- 2:54my experience and then yeah I had to do
- 2:56like level two and three stuff which
- 2:58well you turned out good thank you I'm
- 3:00glad you see it so for me I actually did
- 3:03before I started my Ms I did the little
- 3:06a program at my school so I collected
- 3:08fieldwork hours for that so I did a
- 3:10thousand and that when I did that I
- 3:12didn't know what I was doing did my
- 3:14supervisor so we're all learning
- 3:16together we're all learning so
- 3:18essentially I was just writing programs
- 3:19and keeping up with like program books
- 3:21yeah exactly you know my Center we
- 3:23didn't have parent trainings that often
- 3:25so I never sat in on one projects were
- 3:28very limited most just staff training
- 3:31yeah and then that was really all I got
- 3:33and I got a thousand hours of that oh I
- 3:35forgot to mention we we're doing
- 3:37assessments but one really weird thing
- 3:39about where I was the bcba never sat it
- 3:42on them maybe once when they trained you
- 3:44how to run a VB map but after that the
- 3:47students were allowed so I used to run
- 3:50like is that ethical I don't know if
- 3:51it's ethical it's not ethical but no but
- 3:55you know that's what we did and I would
- 3:56write the and they never gave me
- 3:58feedback oh gosh and you know it's just
- 4:02in the air I don't know so with the
- 4:03bcaba I so I didn't go that route I just
- 4:06went straight for the bcba um how many
- 4:09hours did you do like for so you did the
- 4:12Thousand hours for bcaba when you went
- 4:14to do hours for bcba how many more hours
- 4:16did you have to acquire so I didn't I
- 4:18never took the BCA exam so I just
- 4:20essentially started over when I did bcba
- 4:23and my school also lost its
- 4:24accreditation that's why I never sat for
- 4:27the bcaba exam it was a lot of work
- 4:30like you had to sit and like send in all
- 4:32your syll it was a whole process one of
- 4:33my friends did it but it took almost a
- 4:36year to sit for the exam that really
- 4:38stinks that stunk and I was like that's
- 4:39not what I want to do I didn't have this
- 4:41big well-rounded experience where I felt
- 4:44like I could have even been good at my
- 4:46job so then I came to where I work now
- 4:49and as said one of the first practicum
- 4:51students there as well so they came up
- 4:53with the candidate role when I start
- 4:55kind of a few months after I started and
- 4:57I felt like even though it was new I got
- 4:59a pretty good experience and know last
- 5:01time I mentioned you know parent
- 5:03trainings I didn't get to sit on but I
- 5:05helped with staff training I got to do
- 5:07mock supervision I had a lot of support
- 5:09from my supervisors that tried to teach
- 5:11me as much as they knew it was a big
- 5:13difference J so I felt like I was a
- 5:15little more prepared when I went into
- 5:17the bcba role can you tell us a little
- 5:20bit about so I didn't do my practicum
- 5:21experience where we are now what is that
- 5:23candidate role look like the candidate
- 5:26role when I was a student looked like
- 5:27you had 15 hours of time to do indirect
- 5:30work sure So within the indirect work we
- 5:32were training staff we were writing
- 5:35program essentially the the bcba kind of
- 5:38picked what you were working on at that
- 5:39point this is before we had the
- 5:41checklist okay so it kind of would be
- 5:43like my supervisor would be like okay my
- 5:46clients need XYZ can you do this and it
- 5:48was never something where they would
- 5:51give you a task you put in they help
- 5:53build on it it started with the easier
- 5:55stuff it started with program writing
- 5:56helping with assessments and led into
- 5:58more detail things like writing Behavior
- 6:01plans writing discharge reports
- 6:04essentially I had 15 hours every week to
- 6:06work on stuff at this point did you guys
- 6:09um like were you able like once you get
- 6:11to that like third level um were you
- 6:13becoming um Center support which is
- 6:15where you have
- 6:16thatc when the role started we had
- 6:19Center support oh cool and that's when
- 6:20we were triing it out so if if you're
- 6:23aren't familiar with our Center Center
- 6:25support a staff that kind of helps out
- 6:27on the floor when your bcba may not be
- 6:29available to help out with behaviors
- 6:31help out with any programs that c or a
- 6:33technician may be having trouble running
- 6:35so we started off as on that role it was
- 6:38a there was a learning curve no one at
- 6:41first knew what Center support was for
- 6:42you know we were getting called for
- 6:43bathroom breaks you're like wait no this
- 6:46isn't what and you know the supervisors
- 6:48did a good job of saying like you know
- 6:50guys this isn't what it's for and kind
- 6:52of coming up with a new plan to like
- 6:54disseminate that information like nope
- 6:55these people are to help with behaviors
- 6:58So within the center support role we
- 6:59would also have weekly meetings and talk
- 7:02about all the behavior plans that you
- 7:04know BCB has created things differently
- 7:07and we were also part of in in that
- 7:09process we kind of gave feedback to
- 7:10bcbas as well yeah with what you're
- 7:13saying on the Flor you never get that
- 7:14experience I feel like anywhere else I
- 7:16was going to say so I didn't have that
- 7:17experience I really respect that um like
- 7:20those like you guys as students are
- 7:21given the opportunity to essentially be
- 7:23Mack like pretend supervisors like your
- 7:25little mini supervisors it's a it's
- 7:27really great and even before for the
- 7:29center support role I had a uh
- 7:32opportunity to do mock supervision
- 7:33without my bcba she we had a little data
- 7:36sheet that I would go in and fill out
- 7:38like did the technician do this did the
- 7:40client do this and then I would sit and
- 7:42report it back to my supervisor like
- 7:44this is what I saw and they were still
- 7:46responsible for delivering some that
- 7:47feedback but over time as I got a little
- 7:51more confident they let me do it that's
- 7:52really good practice really great oh I
- 7:55like that all right so going into you
- 7:58know tips and tricks one of the hardest
- 8:01things I feel like and one of the most
- 8:03important things are to build really
- 8:04good rapport with your technicians and
- 8:07have a good communication system yes so
- 8:10I think that is probably one of my
- 8:12number one tips when um you do become a
- 8:15new bcba is you a lot of us um kind of
- 8:19graduate from that student role into a
- 8:22bcba role at a lot of the places that we
- 8:23were working before so you're going from
- 8:26being peers and friendly with these
- 8:28technicians to now you are like
- 8:30overseeing them so working on that
- 8:32boundary of how to provide effective
- 8:34feedback and ensure that they are
- 8:36getting quality supervision while also
- 8:38maintaining professional boundaries when
- 8:39you were once their peer and had a
- 8:41different relationship with them where
- 8:42they you know I was I worked where I did
- 8:45my practic experience there was that
- 8:47fine line of where I felt like where the
- 8:49text could feel like not you know go not
- 8:51gossip you know they made those comments
- 8:53in front of me really oh well you know
- 8:56how it is and I would kind of have to be
- 8:58like no oh like you have to set that
- 9:00boundary in the expectation awkward
- 9:03sometimes it is maybe before I would sit
- 9:05and be like yeah like that did happen
- 9:08that happen so gross whereas now it's
- 9:11like no let's let's keep it professional
- 9:14so you know at first maybe I didn't know
- 9:15what to do so I'd pretend like I didn't
- 9:17hear them you know what that's a good
- 9:19method it worked for you it worked in
- 9:21the moment um kind of so with like your
- 9:26technician relationships and those
- 9:28boundaries how in supervision did like
- 9:31what strategies were you using in the
- 9:32moment to like after you kind of figured
- 9:34out how to do things like to set that
- 9:36boundary I feel like I just was really
- 9:39direct I went in you know with a purpose
- 9:41I'm here to supervise you if the
- 9:43conversation started to get too personal
- 9:46or too gossipy I would just bring it
- 9:48back to the client like yeah oh so can
- 9:49you tell me about how this and this went
- 9:52or can you show me this and this yeah so
- 9:54that we had something to focus on and we
- 9:56didn't have the chance to you know
- 9:58divulge into anything else right one
- 10:00thing that was really awkward for me
- 10:02before was after I passed and I took on
- 10:05the role I was like do i unfollow
- 10:07everyone oh my gosh yeah so I did and
- 10:11then I felt like even weirder about it
- 10:12because then they're like wait now does
- 10:14she not like me anymore like what's
- 10:15going on so then I would I don't know I
- 10:17felt like I was still a little unsure of
- 10:19myself so I would sit and be like oh I
- 10:20had to yeah um with your Center support
- 10:24role um kind of guiding into that we
- 10:28kind of talked a little bit about
- 10:29providing feedback that's really a
- 10:30necessary component as being a bcba is
- 10:33how do we provide feedback did you get
- 10:35the like practice during that like
- 10:37Center support role to provide it kindly
- 10:40but also like holding that boundary
- 10:42definitely I I believe that role really
- 10:45helped shape the way I could deliver
- 10:48feedback that's scary you know you don't
- 10:50know how to so I I was always in that
- 10:53position like after I helped with the
- 10:55situation I had to give the feedback
- 10:57like oh like this is what we could have
- 10:58done or I noticed like XYZ but it was
- 11:02different in the sense where I could be
- 11:04like well we'll check in with your bcba
- 11:06too you know they had like a fall back
- 11:08had a fall back where as as the bcba
- 11:10you're like I am the have to make these
- 11:12decisions what a weird so but I didn't I
- 11:15feel like I didn't have to say anything
- 11:16along those lines when I transitioned
- 11:18into that role really yeah what about
- 11:20you what well you came in you worked as
- 11:23a BCB at your old Center for only a
- 11:25little short amount yes so it was kind
- 11:26of my experience was a little bit unique
- 11:28in that sense so I finished my practicum
- 11:30experience the place that I was didn't
- 11:32have a bcba role so I ended up
- 11:34transferring to another Center to become
- 11:36a bcba um like after ID passed my exam
- 11:40but I like I was only there for a few
- 11:42months and I just didn't um I didn't
- 11:46have that experience like I provided
- 11:48feedback but I didn't have like I didn't
- 11:50come from being their peer so it was
- 11:51really nice I had a fresh start right
- 11:53but there I really like I decided on
- 11:55some methods that I wanted like I
- 11:56thought about it as when I was a student
- 11:58or when I was a technic
- 11:59what was important to me um because like
- 12:03the technicians are the backbone to our
- 12:05field they are doing all like the heavy
- 12:07lifting for us where we're like helping
- 12:09them guide them only there for like
- 12:10short hour two hours at most exactly so
- 12:13some like the number one thing that I
- 12:16did when I started as a bcba is I really
- 12:18wanted to ensure that I was providing
- 12:21feedback in the way that my technicians
- 12:23wanted it so I established a survey
- 12:26method so I like created a survey that
- 12:29would send to each of my technicians
- 12:30asking them like and it had just like
- 12:32and I didn't want to make it too long
- 12:33because if it's too long no one's going
- 12:35to complete it so I just like created a
- 12:37four question survey like asking them
- 12:39how they um received feedback best did
- 12:42they want it in the moment when things
- 12:43were happening or did they want me to
- 12:45wait till the end of the session I also
- 12:47asked like do they want more
- 12:48constructive criticism or do they need
- 12:50that like positive right feedback to
- 12:52feel like they're like performing their
- 12:54job correctly they're really good
- 12:56questions to ask because I feel like
- 12:58sometimes when we're asking these
- 13:00questions the the most common is like
- 13:02how do you want it delivered right yeah
- 13:03do you want it written or do you want it
- 13:05verbally but we get to ask what really
- 13:08works for them do they want to deliver
- 13:10it a little nicer are they fine with
- 13:11that constructive uh criticism so that's
- 13:14really good yeah so another thing I feel
- 13:16like that is really hard when you're in
- 13:18UB is figuring out in supervision and
- 13:21with your indirect time making sure the
- 13:23data is being collected appropriately
- 13:25correctly accurately it's so hard so how
- 13:28do
- 14:29scary can they do they need to hold
- 14:31their like child's hand while walking
- 14:33through the hallway and things like that
- 14:35so I really after a few months of being
- 14:38a bcba I learned like I really need to
- 14:39modify the data collection method and
- 14:41talk with my technicians about what's
- 14:42going to be feasible for them like how
- 14:44can I still get creative with the data
- 14:46collection because it's the most
- 14:47important part of our job but make it so
- 14:49that these technicians can easily
- 14:50collect it right when you first started
- 14:53out did your Center or your the place
- 14:55you worked have a universal data
- 14:57collection method for how they were
- 14:59collecting data the first place that I
- 15:01was a bcba we did program books so we
- 15:03just had all paper data um which I kind
- 15:06of love you were sitting in like looking
- 15:07through the paper data yes and it was a
- 15:09DT Center so they were like sitting at
- 15:11the table doing like Mass trials um so I
- 15:15like would have to like flip through
- 15:16each program and look like through each
- 15:18of those um which I kind of I love paper
- 15:20data I love paper data but like paper
- 15:22data makes you a strong Tech though it
- 15:24makes you a strong Tech because you
- 15:25can't it's a lot harder to falsify and
- 15:28you're looking at the data from what you
- 15:30did all that day yeah versus at right
- 15:32now in the electronic system you're just
- 15:34putting it in you not sit and look at
- 15:36your graph it doesn't yeah you don't get
- 15:37to see it as easily and I might not
- 15:38click oh this is what I'm working on
- 15:40you're just reading it right so yeah I
- 15:43really wanted to modify that was like a
- 15:44big that's something that I recommend to
- 15:46new bcbas is ensure that you are like
- 15:49making sure that the data is easy for
- 15:51your technicians ask them how they want
- 15:53to collect it or if you see a program is
- 15:55not being ran correctly it might not be
- 15:58because they don't know how to run the
- 15:58program they might not know how or be
- 16:00able to collect the data oh I love it
- 16:02and then also going along that you may
- 16:05so you you work on how to deliver
- 16:08feedback or what they like that you work
- 16:11on the data collection are they
- 16:13collecting data what's your next step
- 16:15what else is something that you're
- 16:16thinking about with our technicians um I
- 16:21really like it kind of goes back we
- 16:23briefly touched on it but just like
- 16:24ensuring the boundaries with them are
- 16:26clear um so I was lucky enough to like
- 16:29come in strong like as a supervisor I
- 16:32wasn't peers with a lot of my
- 16:34technicians so that was kind of easier
- 16:36for me but I also I didn't want to be
- 16:39cold and I like I wanted to be friendly
- 16:41with them so I ensure like we always
- 16:43tell the technicians let's pair with
- 16:44your client got to pair with your Tech
- 16:46it's my job to pair with the technician
- 16:48and we never want to take away from the
- 16:49effectiveness of the child's session but
- 16:52when there is downtime if the client is
- 16:54um engaging in their own reinforcement
- 16:57time where they don't need the
- 16:58technician use that time to get to know
- 17:00ask them how their day is going what
- 17:03they did over the weekend like get to
- 17:04know what values they have because the
- 17:07more you know about your technicians and
- 17:08what values they hold you're going to be
- 17:11able to apply feedback and make sure
- 17:13that your their like client session is
- 17:16effective because you can use their
- 17:18values to guide that if that makes sense
- 17:20so if they're having a rough day they
- 17:22feel comfortable coming to you and just
- 17:24saying you know this is happening in my
- 17:27life maybe supervision you take the lead
- 17:30you know sometimes I feel like a tech
- 17:31needs someone they know they can trust
- 17:34and go to and kind you know even after a
- 17:37long day you need someone to go vend to
- 17:39and go to your bcba like who else is
- 17:42going to understand what you're going
- 17:44through exactly and we talked like we
- 17:45talked about they're the backbone of the
- 17:47field do you remember how hard those
- 17:48days were you know they're very
- 17:50difficult you're working eight hours a
- 17:51day sometimes 12 depend some places
- 17:55don't even have break you know we're
- 17:56lucky where I was we got our you know 30
- 17:59minute break got a break when they went
- 18:00into services but some places you're
- 18:03just running session for 10 like 8 to 12
- 18:06hours maybe driving and then if you have
- 18:09back to back hard days right and then
- 18:12you feel like you're not supported like
- 18:13I remember as I was a practicum student
- 18:15at this point and I was like well
- 18:17respected and I felt really supported um
- 18:20but I was having like I had two really
- 18:22challenging kiddos because it's always
- 18:23the students who have the most difficult
- 18:25cases because you're trying they're
- 18:26trying to give you the experience as
- 18:27bcbas but I had really really
- 18:30challenging like three days in a row
- 18:32where I was like aggressive kiddos were
- 18:33beating up on me and I was just having a
- 18:35hard time and I my supervisor she didn't
- 18:38mean to I don't think I hope but she
- 18:41unintentionally just like provided me
- 18:43feedback really directly and really kind
- 18:46of harsh like it there was no like
- 18:48sandwiching there was no positive
- 18:50interaction yeah and I like just
- 18:52remember like asking for a bathroom
- 18:54break and going in the bathroom and just
- 18:55like crying soz I was like oh my God my
- 18:56clients hate me and now my BCB thinks
- 18:59I'm doing everything wrong so it's like
- 19:00ensuring that the way we provide the
- 19:02feedback is going to make them feel
- 19:04supportive important cuz even without
- 19:06you know maybe that you know little
- 19:08icing where she delivered that feedback
- 19:10in a way that you didn't want it in that
- 19:12moment there's so many days as a
- 19:14technician you need to you take those
- 19:16breaks and you I feel like I used to cry
- 19:18all the time well I didn't cry all the
- 19:19time but there was times I would need to
- 19:21like go take a break and just wash my
- 19:23face you know and so that if I didn't
- 19:26have a supervisor that was compassionate
- 19:28and caring
- 19:29that new my style it might have been the
- 19:32thing that broke me maybe I would the
- 19:33field you know you never know 100% it's
- 19:36like so necessary so we really need to
- 19:37just kind of right recapping on that
- 19:40keep in mind your technicians are doing
- 19:42the hard work what is like valuable to
- 19:45them how are you providing feedback and
- 19:47how are you going to make it meaningful
- 19:48to their client session that's great so
- 19:51transitioning away from kind of you know
- 19:53one of the hardest things is figuring
- 19:55out how to handle your technicians how
- 19:57to help best supp them another really
- 20:00hard thing I feel like as a BCB is
- 20:02learning how to set those boundaries
- 20:04within your work life your personal life
- 20:08and then with parents oh gosh yeah so do
- 20:11you want to kind of start talking about
- 20:13that a little bit what do you feel like
- 20:14was the hardest for you yeah I um so
- 20:17when I came to where we work now I I had
- 20:20never worked at a center where I was
- 20:22able to have like open lines of
- 20:23communication with parents like via
- 20:25texting um and I really wanted to be a
- 20:30you wanted them to like you I wanted
- 20:31them to like me I wanted to be
- 20:32personable I want them to like me I want
- 20:35yeah because they like we talked briefly
- 20:37when we were talking about parent
- 20:38training a little bit like they have
- 20:40such hard days like it's my job to
- 20:42ensure that I make it a little bit
- 20:44better I can make it brighter so I
- 20:46really wanted to be readily available
- 20:48for my parents so I would text them
- 20:51updates um if parents like signed a
- 20:53release form they asked for pictures
- 20:55throughout the day you know what the
- 20:56hard thing with this is once you sat
- 20:58that standard of I'm gonna send you this
- 21:00and I'm gonna send you this it becomes
- 21:02like oh well today you didn't it breaks
- 21:05a little bit so yeah and I so when I
- 21:08started out I each of my families I
- 21:11would like text them brief updates and I
- 21:12would tell them about like the client's
- 21:15day and then but they would even text me
- 21:18like asking about um like challenges too
- 21:22like hey so and so is doing this like at
- 21:25the center know you're doing that how
- 21:26can I work on it so parents were asking
- 21:28me this and I would be like past my
- 21:31working hours I'd be home for the night
- 21:32and my like husband and I are having
- 21:34like dinner or something and I'm like on
- 21:37my phone like responding to a parent and
- 21:38then your husband's like what are you
- 21:39doing because they don't have job you
- 21:41know both of our husbands have jobs
- 21:42where you know they clock out they have
- 21:44clear boundaries clear boundaries
- 21:46they're like that's a tomorrow isue or
- 21:48they're logging on like we we'll deal
- 21:50with it
- 21:50later it's hard to explain to the other
- 21:54partner well my job is also someone's
- 21:57life yes you know and I think working in
- 22:00the mental health like field like we
- 22:03are we just want to help we always want
- 22:05to be healthy so like we're trying to be
- 22:09we're doing that all day and even if
- 22:10we're not on the clock or even if I'm
- 22:12not texting a family I'm always thinking
- 22:13about my job I'm like oh my gosh you
- 22:16can't this isn't a job where you just
- 22:18you can't turn it off no matter if
- 22:19someone's like oh leave it at the door
- 22:20this isn't that kind of job where you're
- 22:22going to leave anything at the door my
- 22:24BM Myers or Target you know that reminds
- 22:26me of you know like I think you'd love
- 22:29that it's the small thing it's always on
- 22:32your mind so setting up those boundaries
- 22:34early on is so important like I so going
- 22:37back like with the family thing so I had
- 22:39this family and I I would text them
- 22:41often um and their child had a lot of
- 22:44really extreme behaviors and the parent
- 22:46would text me like at first it started
- 22:48like during dinner hours and then it was
- 22:49like at 9:00 at night they'd be like oh
- 22:51so and so is going to be out tomorrow
- 22:52and I was like okay so I'd respond 9:00
- 22:54p.m. and like no problem have a good
- 22:56night and then it got to the point where
- 22:58I was receiving text messages at like
- 23:0011: and 12 um and I didn't like I had my
- 23:04phone on cuz I'm sitting on Tik Tok or
- 23:06doing my me time so even during my me
- 23:08time I was getting like inundated with
- 23:10this work content and do you feel like
- 23:12continue that trend for a while until
- 23:14you set the boundary or did it just
- 23:16reset once the client left that was my
- 23:18breaking point so I was like oh my gosh
- 23:20and I like I met with my lead and I was
- 23:22like I don't know what I did like I just
- 23:24wanted to be readily available and now
- 23:25I'm too available like so I just had to
- 23:27be honest like in the next parent
- 23:29meeting I had to like set that and I
- 23:30said I am here for you but I set like
- 23:33clear working texting hours so I
- 23:35explained to the family I am available
- 23:37between these hours and these hours and
- 23:38like it just really helped me like know
- 23:41when I was going to be able to respond
- 23:43to them and like even if they did text
- 23:44me like now I don't feel the guilt of
- 23:46not responding if that makes sense that
- 23:47does one thing I'll tell parents is you
- 23:49know if something happens feel free to
- 23:51text me but I'm I've always told them
- 23:53I'm not going to reply until you know
- 23:55the next day when I'm in unless unless
- 23:57usually if they're six then I feel like
- 24:00that's always I'm like okay hope he
- 24:02feels better you know yeah it's easy
- 24:04that's not like a you're not problem
- 24:05solving in that moment you I don't have
- 24:07to think I don't have to think I want to
- 24:09take a quick pause um and just note for
- 24:12those receiving cus our first ceu code
- 24:15word is going to be ice cream so keep
- 24:18that in mind when you take your quiz
- 24:20code word number one ice cream capitals
- 24:23um just just ice cream either way okay
- 24:26sounds good should work awesome so we've
- 24:29talked about the boundaries with parents
- 24:32what about with your work like I said
- 24:33you know it's always on your mind yeah
- 24:36one thing for me was because I wanted to
- 24:39be so in tune with my technicians I
- 24:41didn't take the time in supervision or
- 24:43at work really to work on my indirect
- 24:45task I was taking it home every day and
- 24:48I was let me write my programs let me
- 24:50create materials let me do XYZ and it
- 24:53was becoming you know I would be working
- 24:55until like 9:00 p.m. and you know anyone
- 24:58that knows me that's my bedtime too you
- 25:00know why it's hard is we came from being
- 25:01students where we needed to work all
- 25:04hours of the day to get those 1500 hours
- 25:06I would go home and I was like I need
- 25:07more hours I need to finish I need to
- 25:09get my stuff done so you you had this
- 25:12way of working like when you weren't at
- 25:14work all day every day so then when you
- 25:16get into this role Contin that's what
- 25:19you're used to doing um when I switched
- 25:22from like my first bcba job to coming
- 25:25here that's when I like set my like
- 25:27boundaries for my myself like I really
- 25:29try to like I try my best to not work on
- 25:32things at home um so what iev it's
- 25:36inevitable I feel like but it's so
- 25:38important to try and like establish
- 25:40whatever works for you some people
- 25:41really enjoy working at home and doing
- 25:44that and like if that works for you with
- 25:46no distractions that's me I need that
- 25:47time where you know I'm a chatty person
- 25:49if I'm in the office working I'm going
- 25:51to talk to you so we're going to catch
- 25:53up first how's it going yeah how's the
- 25:55baby like let's talk about this and then
- 25:57I get distracted so for me I just
- 25:59started setting one weekend morning yeah
- 26:02my husband's asleep no one's awake at
- 26:04that time everyone sleeps in and I just
- 26:06worked on my stuff then and that worked
- 26:08really well for me as I was getting into
- 26:10the groove of things because in the
- 26:12beginning it also took me a while to sit
- 26:15you know I wasn't as good as maybe
- 26:16writing programs or you're not as quick
- 26:18yeah I'm not as quick it took me like
- 26:19maybe a little bit longer than it should
- 26:21have but gave me that wiggle room where
- 26:23I didn't feel guilty doing it at work or
- 26:26I didn't take it home on the weekdays I
- 26:28could just disconnect right I that's so
- 26:31similar to you you do the mornings I did
- 26:33because so I am notorious like everyone
- 26:36in the office knows I am terrible at
- 26:38doing my notes on time I I'm like ter
- 26:42and I try so hard I tried like giving
- 26:43myself reinforcement strategies I don't
- 26:45know what I couldn't do it so I sat like
- 26:48um a working time for myself on Friday
- 26:50nights I used to like end my day at 4:00
- 26:52I would go home be home by 600 and then
- 26:54I would work on my notes from like 6:00
- 26:56to 9:00 and that was just like my
- 26:58indirect time I worked on notes I had my
- 27:00like glass of wine and ate my little
- 27:02chocolate chip cookie for the day and
- 27:03that was like my little and it worked um
- 27:05but otherwise throughout the week I
- 27:06really tried not to like work during the
- 27:09weekdays and I think one thing that's
- 27:11also hard is when you are doing this
- 27:14extra work you feel guilty about it
- 27:16you're like everyone else leaves their
- 27:18work behind everyone leaves their work
- 27:20behind and here I am I'm stuck doing my
- 27:23notes because you know you know we have
- 27:25Emily in our office she does her notes
- 27:27right there and then she did it why
- 27:29can't I do it so I think also taking
- 27:31away like that comparison you can't
- 27:34compare yourself you you need to know
- 27:35what like what works for you and what
- 27:38those boundaries look like so before or
- 27:41like once you become you're a new bcba
- 27:42now like set a side time to really think
- 27:45be like do I need these boundaries what
- 27:48when do I want to be working do you have
- 27:50a family at home what is my family time
- 27:52going to look like as long as your job I
- 27:54would recommend don't let your job take
- 27:56away from your values and your family
- 27:58time like our job is yes our job is so
- 28:01important what we do the kids mean the
- 28:03most to us and we love what we do why we
- 28:05do what we do we want to make a
- 28:06difference that's why it's so it becomes
- 28:09this Loop where you're stuck in for so
- 28:11long you're stuck and then you get burnt
- 28:13out then you get burnt out so when you
- 28:15are doing that like prioritize your
- 28:17clients um but set aside time that you
- 28:21are working and then like set your clear
- 28:23boundary of this is my end time like
- 28:25have a what I have done is like have a
- 28:27very firm time of my day this is my
- 28:29family time I'm going to work with like
- 28:31I'm going to hang out with my child or
- 28:32my husband and spend some time like
- 28:35quality time you don't want your work to
- 28:36take away from that and one other thing
- 28:38I think is very important is you know
- 28:39you're going to you're going to get into
- 28:41a Groove maybe you don't like as a UB
- 28:43bcba it's okay to re-evaluate what
- 28:46you've done like you did you went back
- 28:48to the family like guys this isn't
- 28:50working for me anymore let's do XYZ
- 28:53that's okay just because you set that
- 28:55standard at the beginning does it mean
- 28:57you need to continue it if it's not
- 28:59working for you it's okay to change your
- 29:00plan it's okay to change we change our
- 29:02plans with our kiddos they're not
- 29:03working same things with our boundaries
- 29:05we can change them up make it work for
- 29:08you make it work for your family and
- 29:10you'll be fine yes so we touched a
- 29:13little bit on like work life balance and
- 29:15boundaries so set like figure out what's
- 29:17going to work for you in that I want to
- 29:19talk a little bit about like
- 29:20organizational stuff so when you become
- 29:22a bcba there are so many things you need
- 29:26to keep in your brain it like you have
- 29:29to come up with
- 29:30systems we have our cus that we need to
- 29:32track we have our supervision hours that
- 29:34we need to track um like when your
- 29:36assessments are due and reth like
- 29:38periods and things like that like there
- 29:40are these things that as humans we can't
- 29:42just like know off the top of our head
- 29:44so it's really important to kind of
- 29:47create your systems early on like do it
- 29:49as soon as you like when you first
- 29:51become a bcba typically the onboarding
- 29:53is going to be a little bit slow so
- 29:55during that time when you have a lot of
- 29:56free time cre your system so what I um
- 30:00did was I created some like Excel
- 30:02documents to track like so with um our
- 30:05job we have billable requirements so I
- 30:08would like create an Excel document like
- 30:10noting my billable requirements for each
- 30:12of my clients um how many hours that I
- 30:14needed and like I would just track those
- 30:15throughout the week and on that same
- 30:17document I had like when that client's
- 30:19reth period is up so they reauthorize
- 30:22every six months I had of that date and
- 30:24it turns red six weeks beforehand wow so
- 30:27like you
- 30:28I know we have different systems you and
- 30:30I are just like different organ
- 30:32organizational people right that's
- 30:33totally and totally fine whatever works
- 30:35for exactly it works for me and I
- 30:37remember coming into the world you were
- 30:39a bcba when I started and so were a few
- 30:41other people and you guys all shared
- 30:43your trackers with me your organization
- 30:46system and I would sit and look I'm like
- 30:48this is so much work I can't it would
- 30:50overwhelm me and I would try I'd stick
- 30:53to it for like a day or two then I just
- 30:55couldn't keep up
- 30:57so so for me just picking those key
- 31:00things I needed to keep track of just
- 31:01writing them down and sticking them on
- 31:03my desk was enough for is that what you
- 31:04yeah I needed a prompt of like like it's
- 31:07newe on this day so I have stickies
- 31:08everywhere yeah and that's all I need
- 31:10like if it's on an Excel sheet I'm not
- 31:12going to go look at it I just need it
- 31:14available yeah um that I don't know I
- 31:17feel like I couldn't so yeah that that
- 31:19would not work for me find works for you
- 31:21don't go in and look at someone else's
- 31:23be like I need to be that person and we
- 31:25all like went through a grad program you
- 31:28had to be organized to get through that
- 31:29so like what was working for you then
- 31:31how can you apply some of that to
- 31:33organize you so for me I think I'm a
- 31:35brain
- 31:36dump I both my supervisors had me write
- 31:40our agendas for the week and I in those
- 31:42agendas I would just brain up everything
- 31:44that needed to be done so okay I have
- 31:46this thing do for you know my supervisor
- 31:49I would write it down and at the end of
- 31:51the week that's just what I would look
- 31:52at and be like okay well I did that I
- 31:54did that and I checked it off and I felt
- 31:56good about myself and yeah so that was
- 31:57effective you I'm really glad and at
- 31:59school we're lucky cuz they have
- 32:01canvases or I don't know what they call
- 32:03it
- 32:04but yeah it's like a little I go through
- 32:07my and never I was never the person to
- 32:08go sit through my S and like I know you
- 32:10are the Highlight highlighting
- 32:12everything the highlight of the D dat
- 32:14but that was never me I just be like oh
- 32:16let's do this day like I see it I'll
- 32:18figure it up then you know one other
- 32:20thing with like organization that as
- 32:22becoming a bcba I was like really
- 32:24stressed out about was CEUs oh yeah and
- 32:27that for me I was like I have to get 32
- 32:3032 so just as a reminder for everybody
- 32:33listening you need 32 cus what four of
- 32:36which let me double check four are
- 32:38ethics and three supervision so you need
- 32:40that every two years just as like a
- 32:43general reminder how are you keeping
- 32:45track of this me and my Excel documents
- 32:48um so do what works for you so what well
- 32:51one thing please don't make the mistake
- 32:53that I made and wait until 3 months
- 32:55before your reof yeah I didn't do that
- 32:57my
- 32:58and I did them all already I just have
- 33:00to submit everything see that's
- 33:01impressive I waited so I like did cus
- 33:05but the other thing is like if I don't
- 33:07use like my organization type a brain I
- 33:10am really scatter brained so I like did
- 33:13CEUs but I like lost my like
- 33:16certificates and I like didn't write
- 33:18them down so then I just didn't know so
- 33:20then I had all these that I just didn't
- 33:22track so then like three months before
- 33:23my sht was du I was like for them on
- 33:25your email I'm like where are they so
- 33:27that I had to do like I don't know I
- 33:29think I had 13 cus left to get within 3
- 33:31months so don't do that plan ahead like
- 33:33when you become a bcba figure out like
- 33:35what's going to work for you so what I
- 33:36do is I try to do one to two cus a month
- 33:40um and then like towards the end I
- 33:42really focus on like that like last six
- 33:44months of my rth period I really focus
- 33:46on my um your re period my REO period or
- 33:49my research period um I really focus on
- 33:52the cus for supervision and ethics um so
- 33:55you just have to find what works for you
- 33:56but don't wait do not wait well one
- 33:58thing I did was I did first I find four
- 34:02that are supervision and I get them all
- 34:03out of the way and one thing that worked
- 34:05for me is just printing out the
- 34:06certificate then so I know I did it and
- 34:08then putting them in a folder I love
- 34:09that you're like a paper person it's a
- 34:11very low demand thing I don't have to
- 34:13sit and put it in anywhere and I can
- 34:15always refer back to it then I go on to
- 34:17I did I just say super then I go do the
- 34:19ethics and then I use the last ones to
- 34:21pick whatever I want to do and that
- 34:22worked really well for me and that's how
- 34:24I feel like I finished three months
- 34:26early
- 34:28me I'm usually like a deadline type of
- 34:30girl yeah like right before like meeting
- 34:33it the other thing is once you complete
- 34:36your um ceu upload it right away right
- 34:39right that's smart see that and that's
- 34:42not my fault it's the Portal's fault it
- 34:45takes a long time to get into the portal
- 34:46it like takes no shade at the BCB but
- 34:50like it takes 30 minutes to log in and I
- 34:52don't know what if you're on that at the
- 34:53same time it's probably enough for it to
- 34:54crash so the two of us in the same
- 34:56building on the same Wi-Fi on the same
- 34:57yeah server it's not working so I try
- 35:00but it's okay you know and I'll just
- 35:02keep put a sticky note on my desk
- 35:04telling me to do it later exactly you're
- 35:06sticky I so if I did anything paper I
- 35:09would lose it all like my students know
- 35:12me like I have everything in our like
- 35:14online folder and I print it like as my
- 35:17students graduate I'm like and then I
- 35:18print it and keep it all if I printed it
- 35:20as I went I would lose all their stuff I
- 35:22just it's not that like my paper system
- 35:24isn't organized I just have a big I
- 35:26don't know if you've ever seen my Des
- 35:27stack of Pap just a stack of papers and
- 35:30you know one day a month I'll go through
- 35:31and put them where they need to go but
- 35:33until then there's just a stack of
- 35:34papers on my desk that's all it that's
- 35:36your organization method I love it
- 35:38that's so funny oh my gosh all right
- 35:40what else okay so we talked about report
- 35:43we build with our technicians we talk
- 35:45about we talked about organ
- 35:47organization what else am I missing what
- 35:49else do I need to know if I'm in dcba
- 35:51with um kind of organization still a
- 35:54little bit with scheduling how did you
- 35:57feel like coming in um as being like a
- 36:01student and then becoming a bcba how did
- 36:03you navigate creating your schedule cuz
- 36:06you were scheduled beforehand by another
- 36:08person well one thing that was really
- 36:10cool in my practical experience I was
- 36:12scheduling training oh you know so I was
- 36:15very fluent in our EMR system I knew how
- 36:18to go and check everyone's schedule and
- 36:21I felt like that actually came very easy
- 36:23to me the scheduling I I just knew how
- 36:25to go in find some time that worked I
- 36:27only needed hours to plug it in one
- 36:30other thing I did as a student was I
- 36:31used to stock the bcba
- 36:33schedules you creep I feel like you
- 36:35might still do that now yeah I still do
- 36:37it sometimes but and that's I just they
- 36:40were my model like how do they schedule
- 36:41their days yeah and I would ask also it
- 36:43was a question I would ask both my
- 36:45supervisors like how what do you
- 36:47prioritize during the week and a lot of
- 36:49them were like you know get your
- 36:50supervisions in and your parent
- 36:52trainings and and fit everything else in
- 36:53between and I followed that pretty well
- 36:56I feel like I think that's a really good
- 36:57point so I came in as a BBA like we
- 37:00talked about from another place and like
- 37:01I learned how to schedule myself at the
- 37:03place I did my practicum yeah and then I
- 37:06came here and we work as a part of an
- 37:08interdisciplinary team oh they have
- 37:10Services they have services in the
- 37:12middle of their day so like when I first
- 37:14started as a bcba I was like oh I'm just
- 37:15going to schedule Johnny and Susie like
- 37:18my like I just I knew how many hours
- 37:20they required for the week you just did
- 37:22it and I just like did it and then like
- 37:23I would go to find them I'm like where
- 37:25is Susie and they're like she's in
- 37:26speech and I was like what okay so I had
- 37:30it was kind of a learning curve for me
- 37:32how do you keep track of like how many
- 37:35or like how do you know how many
- 37:37supervision hours your client needs per
- 37:39week what does that I follow my sticky
- 37:40me sticky method I'll go like write
- 37:43everyone's name out and on that sheet
- 37:45I'll write like okay they need 10% this
- 37:47is what 10% of you know you would think
- 37:49I would know 10% of 20 hours you know
- 37:52onp I need it written out so I write I
- 37:54write it down I write two and then I'm
- 37:56like I can do up to
- 37:58so I write four next to it I was follow
- 38:00that and I keep that on my desk so when
- 38:03I'm doing my schedule I like okay they
- 38:05need at least two and I get everyone in
- 38:08first and then I go back and be like
- 38:09well this kid needs a little bit more
- 38:11support I can do extra with that yeah I
- 38:13like that that's similar to what I do I
- 38:15mean I just send myself a message and I
- 38:16like write like I have yourself a
- 38:18message I so we use slack for those
- 38:20listening I sent myself like a little
- 38:22note with everyone's hours required and
- 38:24then I just pin it so then I make in my
- 38:25schedule I like look at it I'm like I
- 38:26can do you can go on it on the computer
- 38:29when you're doing your I don't always
- 38:30have my sticky note and then I remake my
- 38:32little then you have to redo it all yeah
- 38:35so that um scheduling was kind of tricky
- 38:37for me like becoming a bcba but like as
- 38:39you do it like just know it comes with
- 38:41ease after like more practice right and
- 38:43it's okay to take extra time out to work
- 38:46on it in the beginning I used to spend
- 38:48an hour on even though I felt very I
- 38:49used to spend like oh is it perfect yeah
- 38:52and then one thing to know is it's not
- 38:54going to stay the way you scheduled it
- 38:57yes going off of that I I always ensure
- 38:59to frontload my week so what that means
- 39:02is I try and like say Johnny Susie and
- 39:06Ally they need like two hours each of
- 39:09supervision I try and like put all my
- 39:11supervision and parent meetings towards
- 39:13like the Monday through Wednesday of my
- 39:14week and then I leave my Thursday and
- 39:16Friday kind of open I have like a parent
- 39:18meeting or one supervision but if I have
- 39:20cancels early in the week rather than
- 39:23having to like panic and try and fill my
- 39:24hours I like add those on later in the
- 39:27week I like that that's really good for
- 39:29me I feel like that's when I get a
- 39:30little more scattered brain though I'm
- 39:31like I I got to change it up it was a
- 39:34lot easier when I was full-time and I
- 39:36had you know multiple kids but now
- 39:38they're only here at least like five
- 39:41hours and in those five hours they all
- 39:42have two hours too and then they have
- 39:45services and then they have so just I
- 39:47try to like stay flexible with schedule
- 39:50and I'll move kids around but then I
- 39:52feel bad for the technician so I've been
- 39:54just sending them a text like hey I had
- 39:56to move this cuz they may not have a
- 39:57chance to see it yet but I'm moving this
- 39:59but let me know if you need anything
- 40:01exactly do you ever um oh my God I lost
- 40:04my train of thought I was gonna ask
- 40:06something about your schedule I don't
- 40:08remember is it okay do you have I'm
- 40:11trying to like jog your memory but I
- 40:13don't I don't know I don't know it's
- 40:14okay it's okay so next topic schedules
- 40:18organization what are we missing UB CBA
- 40:21what's on your mind um pause we need our
- 40:24ceu code word is that what you were
- 40:26thinking that I was thinking but I
- 40:28remember now CU code word number two is
- 40:31cupcake oo okay cupcake cupcake all
- 40:35right let me see Perfect all right so we
- 40:37did before we started like brainstorming
- 40:40this outline this week I know we talked
- 40:41to a lot of like the other bcbas and we
- 40:44were like what did you struggle with
- 40:47what do you wish you knew how to do and
- 40:50an answer every single one of them gave
- 40:52us was collaboration with the other
- 40:54disciplines yes so this is interesting
- 40:57because you had that experience like as
- 40:59a student to know how to collaborate and
- 41:01then you came in just like as a and I
- 41:03would hear you guys be like oh like I'm
- 41:05struggling and I be like well why yeah
- 41:07feel like I don't get it guys okay and
- 41:10when I came like where we are now I felt
- 41:12so lucky and I was like oh my gosh we
- 41:14just have these like such smart people
- 41:17like at our fingertips and like as these
- 41:19resources but before that like during my
- 41:21practicum experience I like that was one
- 41:24of my assignments for school was to like
- 41:26observe a collaboration meeting and it
- 41:29took me until the last week of my
- 41:31experience to even observe one because
- 41:34my the center that I was at we just
- 41:35didn't have that experience and it
- 41:37wasn't as easy to collaborate with
- 41:39others whereas like I feel like where my
- 41:42models they were just popping in like oh
- 41:45in in supervision like oh we're
- 41:46struggling with like speech like a
- 41:48speech thing let's walk past Kelly and
- 41:50ask her like he would be like let's go
- 41:52let's go and we would just sit they
- 41:53would chat and then we would be able to
- 41:55implement right away so a lot of people
- 41:58don't have they don't have the luxury
- 42:00that we do now so so hard it's a hard
- 42:02thing to learn it's really really hard
- 42:04so kind of the advice that I can give is
- 42:06don't be afraid to ask the parents for
- 42:09like the contact information for OTS and
- 42:12slps um or even like mental health
- 42:14professionals that are working with your
- 42:15they would love to talk to us they
- 42:17really want to and I know sometimes it's
- 42:19hard because
- 42:20we has such a like also ABA has this
- 42:24like you know sometimes people are like
- 42:26ew
- 42:28you I sometimes feel scared talking to
- 42:30teachers I feel like because they'd be
- 42:32like well we don't want to talk to the
- 42:33ABA professionals yeah so we might have
- 42:35like this bad reputation or our
- 42:38principles might not line up with like
- 42:40the OT or speech um because we learned
- 42:42our education in such a like specific
- 42:45way um but like just something to think
- 42:48about is this is not the time to be like
- 42:50when you are collaborating with these
- 42:52disciplines it's not the time to be like
- 42:54fighting arguing about well or just like
- 42:57explaining why you can't do what they're
- 42:59saying this is a time to just be
- 43:01open-minded and hear what strategies
- 43:03that they use and then offer strategies
- 43:05you use this you don't need to be like
- 43:07you don't need to agree you don't need
- 43:08to necessarily agree or but just listen
- 43:11and like you don't need to um disagree
- 43:15you know like telling them like I can't
- 43:17do it because it's ABA honestly you
- 43:19don't have to do it but like being open
- 43:21to them and having that open line of
- 43:22communication is just going to make
- 43:24sometimes I feel like comes back to you
- 43:25right oh they said XY and maybe in that
- 43:28moment I didn't agree with what they
- 43:29were doing but now it made sense like
- 43:32later or you like think about it and
- 43:33like yeah when you have that open mind
- 43:35like yes this isn't your knowledge this
- 43:36isn't your area of expertise but they
- 43:38have a wealth of knowledge they went to
- 43:40school just as we did they may have gone
- 43:43longer or and you know one thing is they
- 43:46might have taken some classes we didn't
- 43:47like the developmental classes as BCB we
- 43:50don't really get that you know the other
- 43:53disciplines do so going to them for that
- 43:55exactly I know know this can you help me
- 43:58please yes and our we really really
- 44:01focus on communication um speech
- 44:04language pathologist their their whole
- 44:06world is speaking and I feel like
- 44:09sometimes I don't know you might not had
- 44:11this experience because you kind of grew
- 44:12up in this area where you were able to
- 44:14like reach out to slps but where I grew
- 44:16up as a bcba it was kind of like some of
- 44:20the strategies were frowned upon and I
- 44:21look back and I'm like but why they have
- 44:23all of this wealth of knowledge that
- 44:24like my previous Center was like that
- 44:27first and we had a speech path in the
- 44:31like Center but I remember the bcba
- 44:33would always say oh she doesn't know
- 44:36what she's talking about and that stinks
- 44:37like I think she does I really think she
- 44:40does exactly so be open-minded when
- 44:43collaborating they have like all of this
- 44:45info that's really going to help you and
- 44:46you don't have to apply it but you can
- 44:48know like how they are targeting things
- 44:50in their session um and you can explain
- 44:52to them this is also a really great time
- 44:53to say like so and so struggles with
- 44:56flopping this is the strategies we're
- 44:57using um and when you are collaborating
- 45:00don't use our language we don't need our
- 45:02jargon lay in terms all you they don't
- 45:04understand and it's overwhelming and I
- 45:06feel like it comes down to like you're
- 45:07talking down to them to them like I just
- 45:10know this stuff so you have to listen to
- 45:11me exactly um something that I really
- 45:14really like to think about with
- 45:15collaborating as well is feel open to
- 45:19collaborate with the bcbas that you work
- 45:21with on a day-to-day um sometimes when
- 45:25you are like when you graduate from your
- 45:27program then you pass your exam you're
- 45:29like oh my God I'm supposed to know
- 45:30everything no you don't nobody knows
- 45:32everything we don't we're all still
- 45:34learning and you really need to use the
- 45:37people that are at your like disposal
- 45:39disposal disposal but literally they are
- 45:41we are all in the same like hopefully
- 45:43sometimes in the same office or the same
- 45:44building um I know sometimes if you're
- 45:46working at we all have different
- 45:47experiences yes so using that and like
- 45:50talking with them because some people
- 45:52might have different like um like they
- 45:54might be in the field longer or they
- 45:57gained an experience like I looked a lot
- 45:59to you guys in the office who had that
- 46:01interdisciplinary um like interaction
- 46:04there and I like asked you guys how to
- 46:05guide me on that cuz I didn't never had
- 46:08that I never had that so you really
- 46:10really want to um feel like open with
- 46:12your just brainstorming what's you need
- 46:14to talk it out who else who else is
- 46:17better to do it with than someone that
- 46:18can that no may even know your client a
- 46:21little bit can see them around the
- 46:22center it's the best way to do it right
- 46:24and like when you're think about like
- 46:28their like the um other bcbas in the
- 46:30office they too oh my gosh I lost my
- 46:33train of thought again other BCB is in
- 46:35the office you're reaching out to them
- 46:37yeah you just really need to reach out
- 46:39to them and we kind of will talk on this
- 46:41a little bit later but trying to find a
- 46:43mentor in your field y it's important
- 46:46because we don't know everything we have
- 46:47to remain you know within our scope of
- 46:49competence yeah so these people are
- 46:52there for you I was looking enough where
- 46:54I was I came like I was where I worked
- 46:56and I was given a mentor I used to just
- 46:58go to her with about everything like I
- 47:00don't know what to do and she was able
- 47:02to guide me even if she didn't know the
- 47:04answer it was nice having someone that
- 47:06could listen to me and then go to the
- 47:08next person exactly so and if people cuz
- 47:11where I was before I came here I didn't
- 47:14have like a mentor when I came here I
- 47:15did but when I was before that I didn't
- 47:17have that opportunity so there are a lot
- 47:20of really great people like on um like
- 47:23on the Facebook pages and stuff so you
- 47:25can find people even outside of where
- 47:26you are are to like Mentor you and just
- 47:29have their's like lead you and ask those
- 47:31questions that's great the one other
- 47:34thing with my I'm trying to think like a
- 47:36personal story that I really want you
- 47:38know what something that really helped
- 47:40me was okay so I was a new bcba and I
- 47:44inherited this case and it was time for
- 47:46like the REO and then I looked at
- 47:49everything I ran the assessment and this
- 47:50client made no progress oh no and I was
- 47:53like crap like what do I do I'm stuck
- 47:56and I went to my mentor and I was like
- 47:57can you help me sure and she sat there
- 48:00and helped me figure out like what the
- 48:01next steps were yeah and she took it to
- 48:03the next person above her and we were
- 48:05able to come up with a plan like help
- 48:08the student right or help this learner
- 48:10succeed in the next off and we were able
- 48:12to get him to reach like some of his
- 48:14goals this time around right I felt like
- 48:16if I didn't have her I would have just
- 48:17been stuck the auth would have came back
- 48:19like not approved kind of what have lik
- 48:22Law Services and that yeah it's just not
- 48:24fair to them yeah all right to wrap up I
- 48:26know we asked all of our co-workers some
- 48:29tips they had yes I don't remember
- 48:32them we might have to read we might have
- 48:34to read them but they're not our tips
- 48:36some of them are the same as us
- 48:37collaborate with other disciplines being
- 48:40better at setting boundaries with
- 48:41parents and then un one thing that we
- 48:44didn't mention was understanding how to
- 48:46change and rephrase
- 48:47programs you want yes um so what this
- 48:50person like had mentioned was um like
- 48:52you need to be able to adapt the same
- 48:54kind of program to different technicians
- 48:56so so it kind of goes to like how are
- 48:58your technicians able to like do the
- 48:59work that you um like are assigning them
- 49:02like everyone's going to do things
- 49:04differently so just knowing how to like
- 49:05modify your programs and also with your
- 49:08learner I really want you guys to start
- 49:11thinking about I feel like as students
- 49:12we um we're so used to like writing the
- 49:15goals from the V because that's when
- 49:16you're being taught it's the easy I've
- 49:18done it like you're teaching someone
- 49:20you're like map and come up with these
- 49:22goals but trying to think outside of the
- 49:24box well that doesn't really apply for
- 49:27this learner these Learners are
- 49:28individuals we need to individualize
- 49:30their like programming so really getting
- 49:32creative with like their strategies um
- 49:36this person also wanted to note that she
- 49:38learned that each technician has a
- 49:39different approach to pairing with a
- 49:41client um and it's not always the way
- 49:43you would do it yeah and it's like based
- 49:45on like that how to best get the
- 49:47technician to understand the programs
- 49:49and understand how to help them um when
- 49:51implementing them too one other thing
- 49:54one of the bcbas mentioned was how to
- 49:56approach treatment with compassion
- 49:58instead of winning battles and having a
- 50:00power trip I think this is hard for
- 50:02especially people that come from a
- 50:04different approach where it's it is
- 50:07really that I said this you need to do
- 50:09this we are so sometimes as a field and
- 50:11I I was like this for a little bit um
- 50:14follow through like I was like I
- 50:17presented this demand all I'm worried
- 50:19about is following through with this
- 50:20demand I would like sit there for like
- 50:22if a kiddo was trying to escape a demand
- 50:24for I would sit there for an hour until
- 50:26they completed the I'd wait out the
- 50:27there so many other strategies you could
- 50:29use like lessening the demand thinking
- 50:31about the private events that just
- 50:33happened what other factors may be
- 50:35impacting them or offering compassion
- 50:37and like helping them regulate because
- 50:39when something is hard and you are
- 50:41escalated that's not a learning
- 50:42opportunity so like yeah thinking about
- 50:44it that way we don't need to be on our
- 50:45power trip nope nope and then one other
- 50:48thing was how to be a confident
- 50:50practicum supervisor this is hard no one
- 50:54you know a lot of I feel like people
- 50:56come in they just do what Their
- 50:57supervisor did with them yeah versus
- 51:00like okay let let me be better than the
- 51:03person I got yeah exactly and this is
- 51:06where you need to like look for cus to
- 51:08gain competence like we are not just
- 51:10something to keep in mind is we should
- 51:12always be learning you're not going to
- 51:14know we talked about everything right
- 51:15off the bat like when you pass your exam
- 51:17that does not mean you're done learning
- 51:19you should be looking into the field at
- 51:20like being relevant with research um and
- 51:23like staying on top of your CEUs to know
- 51:25like where to guide your practice and
- 51:27joining those groups like you mentioned
- 51:28on Facebook that's where I feel like I
- 51:30get a lot of like oh like this might be
- 51:32good and then I can save it and I'll
- 51:33watch it later because you should have a
- 51:36platform you can find this information
- 51:39really easily without having to Google
- 51:41it every night you know yeah 100% um
- 51:44something I wanted to note is that of
- 51:47all of these like a lot of these tips
- 51:49are similar to what we said or they're
- 51:51similar to each other so three I think
- 51:53three out of the five other bcbas
- 51:55mentioned that they wanted to learn as a
- 51:57ncba how to collaborate with other like
- 51:59disciplines so just keeping that in mind
- 52:01I wanted to reiterate how important it
- 52:02is um someone else said they wanted a
- 52:06system to keep track of their notes
- 52:08client goals and technician requests
- 52:10like I think she came in and there was
- 52:12just like so much to do that they were
- 52:14like inundated with they didn't have a
- 52:15system for like creating that do you
- 52:17have any tips for it well me I'm like
- 52:19the most unorganized person there is but
- 52:21ask everyone you know there are so many
- 52:23people around you ask them go on the
- 52:26internet and Google what other people
- 52:28are doing find cus about it there's like
- 52:31plenty of options out there you just
- 52:33might have to dig a little extra yeah do
- 52:35a little searching and it's okay and
- 52:37then it's okay to go to your Mentor in
- 52:39those situations too can you help me I'm
- 52:41really struggling with this yeah um
- 52:44something else that another bcba wanted
- 52:47to know as a new bcba that they didn't
- 52:49really expect was how to practice making
- 52:51programs during supervision and I know I
- 52:55kind of touched on this where I would
- 52:56just wait till my weekend morning and
- 52:59write them but after I got a little more
- 53:02practice I was able to do them with in
- 53:04my session yes so something I like kind
- 53:07of guide my students on like when I'm
- 53:09like a practicum supervisor to them is I
- 53:11had the same Challenge and I was like
- 53:13overworking myself like every single
- 53:15night updating my programs updating my
- 53:16bips um because I wanted to be actively
- 53:19involved in supervision I loved hanging
- 53:21out with the kids and I loved being
- 53:22one-on-one with the tech it's also okay
- 53:24to set aside the 10 minutes in the
- 53:26beginning the end at that yes or what I
- 53:28would do is I like say I supervise them
- 53:30twice a week I said hey right now like
- 53:32this is what I do is I say today is I'm
- 53:35going to be like kind of behind the
- 53:36scenes I'm here for you if you need me
- 53:38um but I really want to update this and
- 53:40this and like setting that boundary with
- 53:42the technician in the moment and that's
- 53:43okay and it's okay if it doesn't work
- 53:45out that way too oh my gosh if yeah if
- 53:47there's like three behaviors then you
- 53:49have to like navigate okay I'll be
- 53:51flexible yes being able to do that but
- 53:54being up front with the technician um
- 53:55and just not it every single day because
- 53:57I also don't like to be the supervisor
- 53:59behind a screen like I want to be
- 54:01involved so just having that balance
- 54:03okay so then going on to some more tips
- 54:06uh being I know we also talked about
- 54:09setting the boundaries with parents but
- 54:11it's hard it's easier in the center
- 54:14versus I feel like if you're in home is
- 54:15what a lot of people told us in home
- 54:18you're this person mentioned that she
- 54:20would always be given like food or gifts
- 54:23from the parents family but being having
- 54:25to say no every time
- 54:27yes and I know that the like ethics code
- 54:28was like slightly updated to kind of a
- 54:31lot for these situations whereas before
- 54:33we couldn't accept any you know it was
- 54:36really hard I had this family that I did
- 54:37in home like ABA Services as a
- 54:39technician with and um she would make
- 54:42like big dinners for her family and she
- 54:44would offer me tea and I felt so like I
- 54:47didn't know how to say no um and I felt
- 54:49like I was like kind of offending them
- 54:52so like I'm really glad that they kind
- 54:53of modified that to really consider that
- 54:56these might like be doing that
- 54:58especially around like the holidays
- 55:00you're
- 55:01like we can't can't Lally have to get
- 55:03everything back yeah and that I feel
- 55:05like makes it worse yeah it does and
- 55:07then you have like this poor rapport
- 55:08with the family um I wanted to take a
- 55:11quick break and note that our third ceu
- 55:13code word is kale k a l e and with that
