- 0:58known in south carolina
- 1:01are we ready yes okay let's go ahead and
- 1:03get into the case
- 1:05on august 31st 2016
- 1:08in spartanburg south carolina
- 1:11the police received a missing report of
- 1:13a couple
- 1:14so the people are missing are charles
- 1:17carver who is a 32 year old man
- 1:19and his girlfriend kayla brown who's 30
- 1:22years old
- 1:23so charles dad reported them missing
- 1:26and in the community because because
- 1:29it's a small town
- 1:30a lot of people also helped him trying
- 1:33to look for both charles and kayla
- 1:36he put up signs he had flyers everywhere
- 1:40a lot of people helped looking for this
- 1:41couple
- 1:42and nothing really happened nothing
- 1:45turned up the police tried to
- 1:48look into where they were going about
- 1:50their life as well
- 1:52it wasn't until two months that they
- 1:54gained traction on this case
- 1:56so after that two months they tracked
- 1:59their phone kayla's phone
- 2:02and tarou's phone
- 2:03and typically you can get
- 2:07a tracking
- 2:08how they paint off different phone
- 2:10towers
- 2:11and they found out
- 2:13that
- 2:15their phones were being pinked off a
- 2:17specific area in south carolina
- 2:20and
- 2:21in the meantime
- 2:22they were also investigating about the
- 2:24couple's life and they came upon
- 2:26facebook posts and they were talking
- 2:28about how
- 2:30they were hired to clean the house that
- 2:32was going to be for sale both charles
- 2:35and kayla
- 2:36so not only did they found the phone
- 2:38where the property is they also
- 2:40heard about the cleaning house job
- 2:44and the property was owned by
- 2:46none other than
- 2:48the person we were talking about today
- 2:49which is todd kohlhepp but before we
- 2:51keep going we want to say that todd
- 2:54kohep is a realtor
- 2:56he's a real estate agent he actually
- 2:58owns his own real estate company
- 3:01and the land that we're talking about he
- 3:03has like as big as 95 acres
- 3:06it's a huge piece of land
- 3:08the guy is doing pretty well for himself
- 3:11he's quite popular in the real estate
- 3:13world at this time
- 3:16because they found that the phone was
- 3:18paying off of his property
- 3:20as well as knowing the last whereabouts
- 3:24of charles and kayla
- 3:26being on todd kohlhepp's property at a
- 3:28house that he was going to sell
- 3:30they immediately
- 3:32obtained a warrant
- 3:34for the property itself as well as
- 3:36going to talk to todd about do you know
- 3:39anything that happened to this couple
- 3:42so on that day which is two months later
- 3:44after they filed the missing report
- 3:47which is november 3rd 2016
- 3:50two different sets of police went to
- 3:52search for the couple
- 3:54one went to his property where they
- 3:57think they can find the phone
- 3:59and then the other went to todd and his
- 4:02office
- 4:03so when they went to the property
- 4:06trying to pretty much locate the phone
- 4:08or where it pings off for this phone
- 4:10tower
- 4:11they came upon a shipping container so
- 4:14just imagine the big shipping container
- 4:16that you see that gets put on a truck
- 4:18that gets delivered
- 4:20the police gets there and then it was
- 4:22kind of odd to see the shipping
- 4:24container in the field
- 4:26and
- 4:27they suddenly getting closer to it they
- 4:29hear a knocking
- 4:31right it's metal inside from the inside
- 4:34here it is knocking and of course it
- 4:36immediately became alarmed
- 4:39they hear noises in there they hear
- 4:41someone screaming in there when they
- 4:43went out they also brought in k-9 units
- 4:46so there were dogs there
- 4:48trying to
- 4:50figure out what's going on because they
- 4:51don't know if there was any
- 4:54any surprises that were gonna come upon
- 4:57after breaking into the heavy chained
- 5:00heavy locked of this shipping container
- 5:03they discovered that there was somebody
- 5:06inside it the person inside was the
- 5:09woman of the couple that i was missing
- 5:12kayla brown
- 5:15caleb brown was found
- 5:17chained up against a wall where there
- 5:20was a chain that was also connected to
- 5:22her neck like a dog collar
- 5:24she was malnourished but there was a
- 5:27small
- 5:29mattress
- 5:30she had some items in there of course
- 5:33kayla was very
- 5:35surprised she was scared and the police
- 5:37and then the police calmed her down told
- 5:40her that
- 5:41she's safe she was going to be okay she
- 5:43immediately told the police that her
- 5:46boyfriend about her boyfriend
- 5:48she merely told them that todd kohlhepp
- 5:51had killed her boyfriend on that day
- 5:53that they came to clean the house
- 5:56immediately shot charles
- 5:58to death
- 5:59and kept her in that shipping container
- 6:02and that whole entire time the whole
- 6:03entire two months that they were looking
- 6:05for them she had been in there so she
- 6:07was in there for 65 days and in the
- 6:10meantime while this is happening the
- 6:12police on the other side of this search
- 6:14party
- 6:15of course the one that went to see todd
- 6:18at his office they communicated with
- 6:21each other at first they went to thought
- 6:23to talk to see if he knew anything about
- 6:25the whereabouts
- 6:26todd was the main boss in the office
- 6:29he's a 47 year old man he was i mean his
- 6:32name is on the roller state everywhere
- 6:35they communicated with the police group
- 6:38that they had found kayla in the
- 6:40shipping container kayla had told them
- 6:42that charles had been shot dead and that
- 6:44his body is bare nearby
- 6:46and the police told taught this
- 6:48and todd acted as if he didn't know he
- 6:51just said
- 6:52mom what did he say i don't know i don't
- 6:54know i have no idea what you're talking
- 6:56about he denied the whole thing
- 6:58little does he know i mean
- 7:01kayla already named him and then also
- 7:04the police continued looking in the area
- 7:07because kayla informed them that there
- 7:09were other bodies
- 7:10that were buried nearby
- 7:13comes to find out they are other bodies
- 7:15that weren't married there were two
- 7:18other bodies
- 7:19and they found out a child first they
- 7:22found charles first yes kayla explained
- 7:26to the police that when she was put in a
- 7:28shipping container she was threatened by
- 7:30todd
- 7:31she was being told that hey
- 7:34if you don't obey if you don't do what i
- 7:37say your fate is going to be just like
- 7:39the other couple that are
- 7:41buried
- 7:42nearby this is what she told the police
- 7:45and then the police found the bodies of
- 7:47the couple the other couple
- 7:50who have been missing for six months at
- 7:52this point you want to tell them their
- 7:54name
- 7:55yes johnny coxy 29 years old
- 7:59and megan coxy 23 23 years old
- 8:03right and they were actually lured by
- 8:05todd kohlhepp to do the same thing as
- 8:08kayla and charles they were they went to
- 8:10go clean the house kayla then decided
- 8:13after todd threatened her to obey him
- 8:16she did everything that he told her to
- 8:18because she didn't want to
- 8:20get buried just like the other couple
- 8:23did
- 8:24knowing the whole time that her
- 8:26boyfriend
- 8:28had been
- 8:29shot already dead from day one
- 8:32so
- 8:33todd is immediately arrested
- 8:36at his office and
- 8:38before we keep going to
- 8:40what happens after he gets arrested
- 8:42let's talk about todd a little bit okay
- 8:46let's get to know him a little bit
- 8:47because this guy is
- 8:49crazy nuts so todd was born on march 7
- 8:531971 in florida but he moved
- 8:58to south carolina and georgia because
- 9:01his parents were divorced when he was
- 9:03two years old his mom got custody of
- 9:07todd took care of him and just quickly
- 9:10after they moved she married
- 9:13the
- 9:14stepfather immediately adopted him
- 9:17right so he used last name of his
- 9:20stepfather right kohlhepp todd's
- 9:22childhood mainly folk was focused on him
- 9:25he was a troubled child
- 9:27he
- 9:28was really aggressive he
- 9:31pretty much just kind of bounced back
- 9:34and forth of just being
- 9:36in fights with people or just picking on
- 9:39a lot of people
- 9:40by the time he was nine years old he was
- 9:42already
- 9:44going
- 9:45through counseling to try to control his
- 9:48anger try to control his mood his
- 9:50emotions
- 9:52he even went to a psychiatric hospital
- 9:55when he was younger the conclusion was
- 9:57that he was just a very troubled kid
- 10:00like his iq is really high he's always
- 10:02been a smart kid smart person throughout
- 10:05his childhood throughout his adulthood
- 10:08but he just cannot control himself he
- 10:10just couldn't control himself correct he
- 10:12did really crazy things such as putting
- 10:16clorox in a fish tank
- 10:18or i'm sorry to say this because this
- 10:21animal cruelty who use bb guns on a dog
- 10:24this is a making of a serial killer
- 10:27right here
- 10:28anybody that loves to crime knows this
- 10:31that
- 10:32any serial killer starts off with
- 10:35hurting animals and things like that
- 10:38eventually
- 10:40todd decided to move to live with his
- 10:42father in arizona
- 10:44after not getting along with his mom or
- 10:48not getting along with his stepfather
- 10:50and
- 10:51in arizona is when he got into bigger
- 10:54trouble when he was only 15 years old in
- 10:581986 he kidnapped a 14 year old girl he
- 11:02threatened her with a gun
- 11:04made her go to his house
- 11:07i think she lived nearby
- 11:10and he was watching her anyway
- 11:12and raped her
- 11:14and he threatened her that
- 11:17you better not tell anybody or i will
- 11:19kill you
- 11:20i will kill your family when he was done
- 11:24he took her back to her home and pretty
- 11:26much left the girl who is very smart
- 11:28she's traumatized but very smart
- 11:30immediately told
- 11:32you know she didn't believe him all
- 11:33right she immediately told her parents
- 11:35and they immediately got the police todd
- 11:38then was charged with kidnapping he was
- 11:40charged with sexual assault and he went
- 11:42to prison for 15 years
- 11:44and he had to register as a sex offender
- 11:47in august 2001 todd was released from
- 11:50prison
- 11:51after serving 14 years and after that he
- 11:54moved to south carolina with his mother
- 11:55but in the meantime while he was in
- 11:58prison
- 11:59he got like a college degree
- 12:01yeah he got like a high school degree a
- 12:03college degree he's a smart guy so he
- 12:06used his time being in prison to get a
- 12:08bachelor's degree in computer science
- 12:11he worked as a graphic designer
- 12:13in spartanburg
- 12:15he did all these
- 12:16little odd jobs until he became a real
- 12:19estate
- 12:20agent
- 12:22i don't know how he was able to get
- 12:25a license when he's a registered sex
- 12:28offender but
- 12:30that happened
- 12:31so that brings us back to
- 12:34now to where
- 12:36todd was arrested
- 12:38and then once he was arrested when we
- 12:40were trying to figure out
- 12:42how to
- 12:43prosecute him all this stuff he just
- 12:45asked for a few things
- 12:47he asked for three
- 12:50things
- 12:51first is he wants to talk to his mom
- 12:54he wants to send the photograph to his
- 12:56mom what a photograph i don't know i
- 12:59don't know too
- 13:00and he wants to transfer the money to be
- 13:03a college fund for
- 13:05his friend kid
- 13:07that's all he asked
- 13:09and i think
- 13:10from what we
- 13:12researched that when he talked to his
- 13:14mom was when he confessed
- 13:16to the murders of the two couples uh-huh
- 13:20right
- 13:21and he also confessed to the uh the four
- 13:25people that he he has killed
- 13:2812 years ago which became a big surprise
- 13:31with the police because they were just
- 13:33talking about him
- 13:36kidnapping and killing the two couples
- 13:38but then he also mentioned about the
- 13:41four people
- 13:42that happened 12 years ago like you said
- 13:45so with that
- 13:47on november 6 2003 which was
- 13:5112 years prior to his arrest
- 13:53it was at superbike motorsports which is
- 13:57a motorcycle shop in chesnee as milam
- 14:02told you guys from the thai version
- 14:04todd went to the store
- 14:06trying to return something he was told
- 14:08no
- 14:10and with his temper and with his anger
- 14:12returned to the
- 14:14shop again again right and just start
- 14:17shooting the four people that he shot
- 14:20were the owner scott ponder of 30 years
- 14:23old a service manager brian lucas who
- 14:26was 29
- 14:27mechanic chris sherbert of 26 years old
- 14:31and the bookkeeper beverly guy 52 years
- 14:33old who was also the owner's mother
- 14:36all these guys died from gunshot wounds
- 14:39the case was not solved it was an
- 14:41unsolved cold case and
- 14:44todd confessed to that which is which
- 14:47cleared his conscience the police know
- 14:49because uh
- 14:51they didn't release the how they kill
- 14:54but todd confessed that he killed by
- 14:58gunshot wound to the head right a lot of
- 15:00times people will confess
- 15:02and they might just trying to gain
- 15:04notoriety or they might just try to
- 15:07get the police to keep talking to
- 15:09continue so they can they don't go to to
- 15:12the trial yet so the police still has to
- 15:14make sure that he
- 15:16is truly confessing to the crime that he
- 15:18is by
- 15:20you know matching some of the confession
- 15:23a lot of times the police
- 15:25keep certain information from the public
- 15:28that way you can tell exactly who knew
- 15:31what todd definitely
- 15:34killed full people kill those four
- 15:35people
- 15:36on may 26 2017 todd pleaded guilty to
- 15:40seven counts of murder two counts of
- 15:42kidnapping and one kind of criminal
- 15:44sexual assault and he was sentenced to
- 15:47seven consecutive life sentences without
- 15:49the possibility of parole there was a
- 15:52plea bargain pretty much when they
- 15:54interviewed him they
- 15:56you know the lawyers did their job and
- 15:58he was spared from capital punishment so
- 16:00he would not be getting the injections
- 16:02because south carolina does have a death
- 16:05penalty
- 16:06policies yeah now in usa
- 16:10we still have 27
- 16:12states that have dead penalty
- 16:15right so today's case was a little
- 16:18different we focused on the serial
- 16:20killer todd kohlhepp in south carolina
- 16:24instead of some other crimes
- 16:27and
- 16:28that is it for today so thank you
- 16:30everyone for coming by and listening to
