  29. 1:24Terry Ann Parnell is a nurse a
  30. 1:27recognized health literacy expert and an
  31. 1:30award-winning author
  32. 1:31she's a principal and founder of tap
  33. 1:34Wellness coaching and health literacy
  34. 1:36partners
  35. 1:38her extensive nursing career
  36. 1:40incorporates hospitals and health system
  37. 1:42management
  38. 1:43administrative and Leadership roles as
  39. 1:47well as faculty roles in schools of
  40. 1:49nursing medicine and health care
  41. 1:51administration
  42. 1:53hey Terry thank you for being here thank
  43. 1:55you so much for your time can you give
  44. 1:56us a little bit of a background about
  45. 1:58yourself
  46. 1:59sure thank you for having me actually um
  47. 2:02it's a pleasure
  48. 2:03um this is always the toughest part of
  49. 2:05podcasts because I have uh over 40 years
  50. 2:08in the nursing career so
  51. 2:11um I'll keep it very brief but
  52. 2:13essentially I was a diploma graduate
  53. 2:15back in the day when they had diploma
  54. 2:17schools and then and I went to school in
  55. 2:21Greenwich Village New York um so it was
  56. 2:23a very interesting introduction to
  57. 2:25nursing working in that environment and
  58. 2:28then over the years I did bedside
  59. 2:31nursing I was a clinician and then
  60. 2:34obviously worked my way up you know
  61. 2:36through always changing my my career I
  62. 2:40was a manager director and then I went
  63. 2:42into the leadership side of it away from
  64. 2:46the bedside was helping to run you know
  65. 2:49a tertiary Hospital quaternary Hospital
  66. 2:52actually in the c-suite I was a
  67. 2:55associate executive director and then
  68. 2:58after a few years doing that I went out
  69. 3:00to a vice president role in a integrated
  70. 3:04very large Integrated Health Care system
  71. 3:06so I had a system role where you worked
  72. 3:08with you know 17 18 hospitals ambulatory
  73. 3:11facilities physician practices and then
  74. 3:15launched a new office with a physician
  75. 3:18colleague of mine and then gosh then I
  76. 3:22decided what am I going to do now when I
  77. 3:23grow up and I decided to leave and
  78. 3:26launch my first business which was
  79. 3:28health literacy Partners which was
  80. 3:30always my passion health literacy
  81. 3:33communication you know making meeting
  82. 3:36people where they're at to provide their
  83. 3:38health care and did that and all along
  84. 3:41the way prevention Wellness clear
  85. 3:44communication
  86. 3:45has always been my thread that I've
  87. 3:49pulled through everything that I've done
  88. 3:51and for myself personally and in my
  89. 3:54career and then once just around when
  90. 3:58covet hit I decided to finally do what
  91. 4:01kind of was always a hobby for me and
  92. 4:03launch my Wellness coaching program
  93. 4:07specifically for healthcare
  94. 4:08professionals only and design only for
  95. 4:11healthcare professionals you know and
  96. 4:13then along the way I even I was a
  97. 4:15diploma graduate I went along I I ended
  98. 4:18up getting my doctorate in nursing
  99. 4:21practice I became a fellow in the
  100. 4:23American Academy of nursing nursing I've
  101. 4:26written a couple books book chapters you
  102. 4:28know I publish went on mission trips
  103. 4:30it's a lot of I've taught in different
  104. 4:33schools nursing schools healthcare
  105. 4:35administration programs physician
  106. 4:38programs it's a little bit of everything
  107. 4:40that's the amazing thing about nursing
  108. 4:41actually you can pivot every few years
  109. 4:44as you well know and do something new
  110. 4:47and interesting
  111. 4:49so that's kind of in a nutshell
  112. 4:52that's amazing why a variety of
  113. 4:53experience that you have and you're a
  114. 4:55great example of how you can pivot in
  115. 4:56nursing whenever you
  116. 4:58feel like you've outgrown your current
  117. 5:00role or needed time for a change so with
  118. 5:03your vast experience in leadership and
  119. 5:05being a director and vice president of a
  120. 5:07business what do you think that nurses
  121. 5:10and Healthcare professionals are
  122. 5:11currently lacking or needing in the
  123. 5:13profession
  124. 5:15well you know it's um it's really hard
  125. 5:17now I don't what they're lacking I don't
  126. 5:20I don't know that nurses are lacking
  127. 5:23anything I think healthcare has changed
  128. 5:25dramatically obviously as we all are
  129. 5:28living and experiencing I think
  130. 5:31um nurses
  131. 5:33inherently the nursing profession people
  132. 5:36go into it because they're caring and
  133. 5:39they want to care for others and they're
  134. 5:40empathetic and compassionate and the
  135. 5:44issue with that or the double-edged
  136. 5:48sword is that they never take care of
  137. 5:49themselves right so it's a blessing and
  138. 5:51it's a curse they're always caring for
  139. 5:53other people and they tend not to put
  140. 5:55their priorities first so I think nurses
  141. 5:58if I had to you know pick something I
  142. 6:01think we need to build up resilience you
  143. 6:05know and set boundaries and practice
  144. 6:07saying no and build community and find
  145. 6:11those that we could go to for support
  146. 6:15um you know when we're having a
  147. 6:18challenge you know at work um I think
  148. 6:21Community is and culture at work is huge
  149. 6:26um you know so all those things
  150. 6:28um are really important in finding that
  151. 6:30work-life balance right
  152. 6:32um and as far as the the career I think
  153. 6:35the healthcare organizations are
  154. 6:37experiencing that now you know in New
  155. 6:39York finally but they need to um
  156. 6:43give nurses the resources that they need
  157. 6:46to you know have safe patient nurse
  158. 6:49ratios and have you know provide safe
  159. 6:51quality care and not feel like they're
  160. 6:54you know burning the candle on all ends
  161. 6:57um so you know good benefits pay for you
  162. 7:00know give them a salary that's
  163. 7:02appropriate for what they're doing
  164. 7:04um maybe Flex better hours Flex time you
  165. 7:07know we all don't have to spit in the
  166. 7:09same bucket always of 12-hour shifts
  167. 7:12years ago that was never a thing
  168. 7:14um you worked five days a week but you
  169. 7:16worked like 10 hours every day
  170. 7:19um which was no good which you know
  171. 7:21wasn't well serving either so I think
  172. 7:24there has to be agility more agility on
  173. 7:26the side of the healthcare organization
  174. 7:28you know but we're getting there I think
  175. 7:31we're I think I'm optimistic I think um
  176. 7:33unfortunately you need to go through a
  177. 7:35little the rough patch to get to the the
  178. 7:37other side yeah of course and Terry
  179. 7:40should you have a vast experience in
  180. 7:42bedside and leadership positions how do
  181. 7:45the roles and responsibilities change
  182. 7:48from bedside to a leadership role and
  183. 7:52how do you or how did you manage to meet
  184. 7:56the needs of both nurses and lower
  185. 7:59management underneath you while still
  186. 8:01maintaining the goals of your higher ups
  187. 8:07it's different I think first of all
  188. 8:09working with the team right who gets it
  189. 8:12and is really important and my theory
  190. 8:15was always if I'm whatever I'm looking
  191. 8:18at and whatever situation we were
  192. 8:21working on if I always looked at it
  193. 8:23through the what was best for the
  194. 8:25patient
  195. 8:26and the family I felt like I could never
  196. 8:29go wrong right
  197. 8:30um so that was first and foremost and
  198. 8:32then in order to do that we had to
  199. 8:35support our Health Care Professionals
  200. 8:36right
  201. 8:37um because then that wouldn't be in the
  202. 8:39best interest of the patient so it's
  203. 8:41hard it's challenging it's not an easy
  204. 8:43role you know you your budgets are
  205. 8:45getting cut constantly
  206. 8:47um you know you have to do more with
  207. 8:49less and you have to make some difficult
  208. 8:51decisions but again I'm gonna I think
  209. 8:53going back to you know the culture of
  210. 8:56the organization transparency and
  211. 8:58including the bedside clinicians not
  212. 9:01just nurses all of them
  213. 9:04um at the table when decisions are being
  214. 9:06made is key you know they have they're
  215. 9:10they're living it they're in you know
  216. 9:12deep in the weeds there and if they're
  217. 9:15part of the process and understand all
  218. 9:17sides of what you're dealing with as
  219. 9:20that administrator
  220. 9:22um you know you can come to a
  221. 9:23collaborative decision and give it I was
  222. 9:27a big one on everything's a trial let's
  223. 9:30give it a try for a little bit see how
  224. 9:31it works and you know we have to change
  225. 9:34we'll pivot and change but I think
  226. 9:36including them in the plan and the
  227. 9:38process and the thinking
  228. 9:40um is okay
  229. 9:42a little bit ago you mentioned agility
  230. 9:44to change as far as organizations
  231. 9:47can you can we identify these
  232. 9:49organizations that need Improvement and
  233. 9:51Agility is it the associations for
  234. 9:54nurses is more the the hospital
  235. 9:56organizations that need to kind of
  236. 9:57collaboratively work together with
  237. 9:59Healthcare professionals to maybe pour
  238. 10:02into as far as resources into nurses or
  239. 10:04pour into patient safe ratios to protect
  240. 10:07the nurses
  241. 10:09yeah I'm not as familiar with the
  242. 10:12resources that um you know nursing
  243. 10:14associations or organizations have
  244. 10:17available to them so I really couldn't
  245. 10:19speak to that I know it's challenging
  246. 10:22you know in healthcare organizations and
  247. 10:25systems and sometimes
  248. 10:28um
  249. 10:28the larger they are
  250. 10:31there there may be a few
  251. 10:33organisms a few hospitals or a few
  252. 10:36entities in that system that really are
  253. 10:39carrying the the weight of the entire
  254. 10:42system because some just do better
  255. 10:43financially than others you know some
  256. 10:46organizations you you have
  257. 10:50um
  258. 10:51a facility you might have that may not
  259. 10:53be financially
  260. 10:55um doing well but it's really important
  261. 10:58for the mission of the organization so
  262. 11:00another hospital or ambulatory setting
  263. 11:03in that system right may be kind of
  264. 11:06carrying that
  265. 11:07facility financially so it's it's a you
  266. 11:11have to look at the big picture look at
  267. 11:14the vision you know look at the
  268. 11:16resources and take it from there but it
  269. 11:18is sometimes moving it's like turning
  270. 11:20the Titanic right it moves very slowly
  271. 11:23because it's so large so um I I think
  272. 11:27it's just trying new things Thinking Out
  273. 11:29of the Box taking out a sometimes with
  274. 11:32say a clean white piece of paper and
  275. 11:34let's start like let's just take a
  276. 11:37totally different approach to it to what
  277. 11:39we're looking at I mean you have to how
  278. 11:41do other Industries do things you know
  279. 11:44we could adapt from that I mean
  280. 11:46Healthcare has done that all along so I
  281. 11:48I think um
  282. 11:50that's a good way to look at the
  283. 11:53existing resources that you have and how
  284. 11:56can you utilize them a little
  285. 11:57differently
  286. 12:00from like a business and Healthcare
  287. 12:02perspective what are some of the major
  288. 12:04struggles that that hospitals have is it
  289. 12:07the budgeting is it retention is it
  290. 12:10bring on Physicians is it retaining
  291. 12:12patients from from like the you could
  292. 12:14say the health care and and business
  293. 12:16view of things because as nurses all we
  294. 12:18really focus on is is a unit
  295. 12:20satisfaction making sure that we're
  296. 12:23taken care of but we don't really always
  297. 12:24think about the bigger picture and and
  298. 12:27the healthcare Giant and the hospital
  299. 12:29system as a giant so I'm curious on on
  300. 12:31what are some things that the hospital
  301. 12:33in General struggle with
  302. 12:35so I haven't been in a hospital setting
  303. 12:37in many years so I you know I can't talk
  304. 12:40to it other than what I hear I have
  305. 12:43family you know that are
  306. 12:45um many family members that are still in
  307. 12:47healthcare
  308. 12:48um and of course clients that speak with
  309. 12:50me and from what I read you know
  310. 12:53um I I think that again it just it's
  311. 12:57there are a lot of struggles
  312. 12:59um
  313. 13:00you know it kind of goes back to what I
  314. 13:02had said it's just um what they're
  315. 13:04struggling with is reimbursement it's
  316. 13:07length of stay it's that all the
  317. 13:10patients that are in the hospital are
  318. 13:12much
  319. 13:14um they're sick right I mean anyone
  320. 13:16who's not really sick or not in a
  321. 13:18hospital any longer
  322. 13:20um you know so their reimbursements are
  323. 13:22being cut the the nurses tend to not
  324. 13:26want to be it seems to me be at the
  325. 13:28bedside any longer for the reasons that
  326. 13:31we spoke about um as far as Staffing and
  327. 13:33resources and maybe scheduling
  328. 13:37um you know so it's extremely
  329. 13:39challenging I'm not I haven't been in
  330. 13:41that situation you know for years now
  331. 13:44um but it's it's not easy it's not easy
  332. 13:48you know it at the end of the day it's a
  333. 13:51business
  334. 13:52you know they have to keep the lights on
  335. 13:54and they have to
  336. 13:55pay employees so you know it would be
  337. 13:59nice if you didn't have to do that and
  338. 14:01always just focus on the patient but
  339. 14:04it's finding that balance right and that
  340. 14:06that Harmony so to speak but doing the
  341. 14:08right thing for the patient and staff
  342. 14:10and then being able to keep the shop
  343. 14:12open so to speak
  344. 14:15and did you mention you also are a huge
  345. 14:17advociver for communication you
  346. 14:19mentioned communication and we're
  347. 14:21culture correct
  348. 14:22yeah well my first business was health
  349. 14:25literacy Partners
  350. 14:26um which is yeah health literacy was is
  351. 14:29huge to me it's very important so that's
  352. 14:32um verbal communication written
  353. 14:34communication and also environmental
  354. 14:37communication
  355. 14:38so it's you know how patients access
  356. 14:41care how they
  357. 14:43um you know when you talk with a patient
  358. 14:46how that's information is communicated
  359. 14:48it's the information that they receive
  360. 14:51as far as printed materials it's signage
  361. 14:54in the building or in the parking garage
  362. 14:56it's how the facilities laid out I mean
  363. 14:59it touches on everything until it's
  364. 15:01culture you know patients cultural
  365. 15:04preferences language preferences
  366. 15:07um so yeah so I did I still do that as
  367. 15:10well
  368. 15:11um but right now my main focus is the
  369. 15:13wellness of the healthcare professionals
  370. 15:16because
  371. 15:17um I think nursing is the best career
  372. 15:21there is
  373. 15:23um I think we're so blessed to be able
  374. 15:25to be in it and um I think that the
  375. 15:28nurses especially the nurses all the
  376. 15:30Health Care Professionals really are are
  377. 15:32suffering now so I just wanted to I I
  378. 15:35pivoted again just to try to give back
  379. 15:37to the nursing community
  380. 15:39but yeah the communication is a big part
  381. 15:41of that too right if you can't
  382. 15:42communicate you can't coach people
  383. 15:45yeah I'm glad you uh pivot into Wellness
  384. 15:47because we need to fill our own cups as
  385. 15:50nurses we talk about all the time not
  386. 15:52only from a mental standpoint but of a
  387. 15:54physical in the whole Mind Body approach
  388. 15:56so in your Wellness journey I think
  389. 15:59there's five pillars that you mentioned
  390. 16:01something about tap can you talk about
  391. 16:02those
  392. 16:04yeah but you know um Wellness isn't just
  393. 16:06about the food we eat you know which
  394. 16:08people you know always tend to focus on
  395. 16:10and when I was doing research
  396. 16:12um I did not see any
  397. 16:16um Wellness coaching
  398. 16:18programs that were specifically geared
  399. 16:21toward the unique uh work-life balance
  400. 16:24or you know Harmony that nurses and
  401. 16:26Healthcare professionals deal with so um
  402. 16:29the five pillows that I pulled together
  403. 16:31were that holistic approach so it's
  404. 16:33about enjoying food
  405. 16:35um it's moving more
  406. 16:37sleeping soundly building resilience
  407. 16:40which is a huge part of it and
  408. 16:42practicing self-care so they're all
  409. 16:45integrated it's a 12-week program we
  410. 16:48have group coaching small group coaching
  411. 16:51and then we also do one-to-one coaching
  412. 16:53it's all virtual you know the other
  413. 16:56thing
  414. 16:56um I mean it's virtual because of where
  415. 16:59we are today right in the world but on
  416. 17:02the other hand you know nurses in
  417. 17:05facilities they may have Chief Wellness
  418. 17:06offices or chief chief people offices
  419. 17:09different roles that are there for the
  420. 17:11staff but often the staff doesn't always
  421. 17:14feel comfortable opening up to someone
  422. 17:17at their own organization about you know
  423. 17:19a struggle that they're dealing with
  424. 17:20either personally or at work so I felt
  425. 17:24that having it virtual yet you know we
  426. 17:26we have zoom calls and we build
  427. 17:28community with like-minded people to
  428. 17:31support them who really get what they're
  429. 17:33going through and how hard it is right
  430. 17:35you know it's it's really challenging so
  431. 17:37those are the five pillars that we
  432. 17:38integrate throughout the 12 weeks and
  433. 17:41then in addition to that we have an app
  434. 17:44um like many other apps that send daily
  435. 17:47messages to people's phones
  436. 17:49inspirational educational motivational
  437. 17:51messages the difference with this is
  438. 17:53that all the messages are geared towards
  439. 17:56a healthcare professional you know so if
  440. 17:58we're talking about
  441. 18:01um sleep we're talking about shift work
  442. 18:03you know if we're talking about eating
  443. 18:05lunch we realize that nurses in many
  444. 18:07units may only get 15 minutes for lunch
  445. 18:09you know if that
  446. 18:12um so you know it's very specific to the
  447. 18:14healthcare professionals needs
  448. 18:16with the with the five pillars is there
  449. 18:19one of the nurses and healthy
  450. 18:22professionals struggle with the most or
  451. 18:24maybe one that needs the the most
  452. 18:26Improvement for healthcare professionals
  453. 18:29yeah you know it's interesting every
  454. 18:31everyone always asks me that and um in
  455. 18:33my experience
  456. 18:35um I love food you know and I love cook
  457. 18:38make like changing up recipes and
  458. 18:40experimenting so I'm always like
  459. 18:42interested in that but um honestly um it
  460. 18:45seems to be sleep you know I think and
  461. 18:48you know they say like you know sleep is
  462. 18:51so important I mean well the research
  463. 18:54sets out now it's like sleeping is like
  464. 18:56one of the if you sleep less than seven
  465. 18:58or eight hours a night
  466. 19:01um I don't know the exact site but uh
  467. 19:04citation but it's almost uh it's like a
  468. 19:06risk factor for heart disease it's like
  469. 19:08you know we really need to to sleep
  470. 19:12um and it's so important and it impacts
  471. 19:14all the other pillows and it tends to be
  472. 19:16a struggle even for people that are on
  473. 19:18the day shift I think it's the 12-hour
  474. 19:20shifts they find
  475. 19:22um they've shared that
  476. 19:24um one night they'll sleep five hours or
  477. 19:26four hours and then another the next
  478. 19:28night they're sleeping 10 or 12 hours
  479. 19:30and that you know um
  480. 19:32that no routine whatsoever really messes
  481. 19:36with everything else it messes with your
  482. 19:37eating right
  483. 19:39um they're wanting to move or not move
  484. 19:42that day
  485. 19:43um so it's sleep I would say is um the
  486. 19:46one in my experience working with
  487. 19:47clients yeah yeah that was definitely I
  488. 19:50want to say our biggest inconsistency
  489. 19:51too because men I used to work work
  490. 19:53night shift a lot and when you work
  491. 19:56nights everything is out of whack you're
  492. 19:58just like hating rhythm is all messed up
  493. 20:00you know you're going to sleep and
  494. 20:01everyone's waking up and then then it's
  495. 20:03like dangerous then it's like constant
  496. 20:05transition from working night then when
  497. 20:07you're off of work you got transitioned
  498. 20:09back to being a normal normal person
  499. 20:12like a normal schedule and you never
  500. 20:14have consistent sleep ever and and if it
  501. 20:16is consistent it's still you're sleeping
  502. 20:17during the day sleeping during the day
  503. 20:19is not as it's not as like you could say
  504. 20:21fulfilling as it is during during the
  505. 20:23night and then you're like you become
  506. 20:24like a night person where you do start
  507. 20:26doing laundry at like two o'clock three
  508. 20:28o'clock in the morning because you can't
  509. 20:29fall asleep you're doing dishes at three
  510. 20:31o'clock in the morning cooking food
  511. 20:32you're just like he's like what is going
  512. 20:34on and it's like it's doable in in early
  513. 20:37on when you're a new nurse but then I'm
  514. 20:38thinking like hey if I'm gonna be 35 40
  515. 20:4245 years old like is this gonna am I
  516. 20:44gonna be able to maintain this because
  517. 20:46you have a little bit more resilience
  518. 20:47when you're when you're younger but then
  519. 20:49you know when you start to get older you
  520. 20:51start to get worn out more and it's just
  521. 20:53it just affects the whole your whole
  522. 20:54life you become cranky you're never
  523. 20:56satisfied
  524. 20:57right and then you tend to you know you
  525. 21:00don't you're exhausted all the time you
  526. 21:01can't think clearly you crave food that
  527. 21:04you shouldn't be eating or comfort food
  528. 21:05you know that makes you you know want to
  529. 21:07just lay around more you don't exercise
  530. 21:10which I know is you know I say is
  531. 21:12important to you guys it is it's really
  532. 21:14it affects everything and then imagine
  533. 21:16having a family on top of that you know
  534. 21:19so many nurses have families or you know
  535. 21:22parents that need to care for or
  536. 21:24children that they need to get to school
  537. 21:25and they can't even even if they could
  538. 21:27sleep during the day you know they they
  539. 21:30can't they have to be available for
  540. 21:31their family
  541. 21:33um during the day for certain things so
  542. 21:34it is it's it's very challenging and you
  543. 21:37know on top of that it's that you know
  544. 21:39one night on two nights off back on that
  545. 21:43back and forth is just really messes
  546. 21:46with your circadian rhythm so so what
  547. 21:48are some some recommendations and what
  548. 21:50are some things that nurses or anybody
  549. 21:53struggling with with sleep could could
  550. 21:55do today to kind of better some better
  551. 21:57themselves is it try to get on a day
  552. 22:00shift schedule is this something
  553. 22:02revolving around routines before bed or
  554. 22:05sleeping practices how can they they
  555. 22:07improve themselves
  556. 22:08yeah so it it's it's individual and we
  557. 22:11work you know with each even though the
  558. 22:13pro in a group program we move through
  559. 22:15the pillars kind of together each
  560. 22:17person's goals and action steps are
  561. 22:20individual and we do do we have calls to
  562. 22:23go over that and set people up for
  563. 22:25Success so you know I would say for some
  564. 22:27it depends on the person but for some
  565. 22:30suggestions would be to yes certainly
  566. 22:33um set a sleep routine so to speak
  567. 22:37um you know before you're ready to go to
  568. 22:39sleep it sends signals to your body that
  569. 22:41you're starting to wind down so whatever
  570. 22:43that might be
  571. 22:45um you know we always talk about all the
  572. 22:47things you shouldn't be doing right you
  573. 22:49know don't have caffeine don't have
  574. 22:50alcohol don't eat you know a large meal
  575. 22:53before going to sleep so I try to shift
  576. 22:55it into all the things we can do right
  577. 22:57instead of talking about the things we
  578. 22:59shouldn't do so you know if you have a
  579. 23:01cup of chamomile tea or you have some
  580. 23:04foods that help induce sleep or promote
  581. 23:07sleeps like some nuts or
  582. 23:10um you know have a small snack a little
  583. 23:12while before you're ready to go to bed
  584. 23:14have a routine shower you know whatever
  585. 23:16that is for you a warm shower a bath
  586. 23:19meditate
  587. 23:21um do some stretching uh you know set
  588. 23:24your room up for Success right you want
  589. 23:27it to be dark if you have the that never
  590. 23:29it was certain things like that oh you
  591. 23:31know it's individual for me those
  592. 23:33blackout curtains and all that stuff
  593. 23:35never really work you know for other
  594. 23:37people it works like they're like in a
  595. 23:39cave they love it a cool temperature you
  596. 23:42know treat yourself to some nice bedding
  597. 23:44um you know put on
  598. 23:46um a diffuser in your room with some
  599. 23:48lavender or chamomile uh you know every
  600. 23:52person's different but those are some of
  601. 23:53the things that we work but it's the key
  602. 23:56I think really though is the finding
  603. 23:58those one or two things that you want to
  604. 24:00start to implement
  605. 24:02um and then being consistent with it all
  606. 24:05right if you um don't aren't consistent
  607. 24:08your body will never get into that
  608. 24:10Rhythm and when you're alternating
  609. 24:12shifts it's important to have a separate
  610. 24:15day shift sleep routine right and US
  611. 24:18evening or a night shift sleep routine
  612. 24:21right they're going to be different if
  613. 24:22you're going to go back and forth off
  614. 24:24which most people do I know people will
  615. 24:26say stay on stay on the night shift even
  616. 24:29on your days off but you know I think
  617. 24:32that's not really reasonable for many
  618. 24:34people to do that
  619. 24:36um when the world is going on about you
  620. 24:38and your home so we always say to you
  621. 24:42know try to
  622. 24:44keep those different routines separate
  623. 24:46but have a routine for each shift that
  624. 24:48you get accustomed to doing and it sends
  625. 24:50a signal to your body to start to slow
  626. 24:52down wind down
  627. 24:54um and you know what else helps a lot of
  628. 24:56people is after they get off that night
  629. 24:58shift in the morning you know of course
  630. 25:00don't have a cup of coffee on the way
  631. 25:01home don't stop and eat a large meal
  632. 25:04um wear like sunglasses though like
  633. 25:07especially if it's bright in the morning
  634. 25:08when you come home just to not get that
  635. 25:10right light that you know signals to
  636. 25:13your body to wake up right
  637. 25:16um so kind of wear a dark sunglasses and
  638. 25:19kind of keep your activities to a
  639. 25:20minimum you know before trying to if
  640. 25:23you're going to head off to sleep right
  641. 25:24when you get home
  642. 25:26that works great
  643. 25:27not at all I'm just kind of I'm laughing
  644. 25:31when you say do things lightly before
  645. 25:32the night routines because sometimes
  646. 25:34Peter and I will hit a heavy workout
  647. 25:35before we go to bed but then we just
  648. 25:38knock out like babies so I love how you
  649. 25:39said it's very individualized as far as
  650. 25:41what works for everybody
  651. 25:44it does so you have to look at assess
  652. 25:46you know or take a look at what they're
  653. 25:47currently doing what's working and
  654. 25:49what's not and then together co-create
  655. 25:51those goals or those
  656. 25:54um action steps that they're willing you
  657. 25:55know to start implementing and that they
  658. 25:57can Implement with everything else that
  659. 25:59they have going on in their life yeah
  660. 26:01but it's funny some of the people I've
  661. 26:03worked with are like oh my gosh I've
  662. 26:06been trying to do this for years and I'm
  663. 26:08finally sleep I haven't slept like this
  664. 26:10you know it's so nice to hear when
  665. 26:12someone's able to do it and then the key
  666. 26:14is maintaining that right and not
  667. 26:16slipping back into the old habits again
  668. 26:19right
  669. 26:19that's so true and I know for the past
  670. 26:22two years burnout and overcoming that
  671. 26:25has been a huge struggle for many nurses
  672. 26:29in your program or in general in your
  673. 26:31experience what are some self-care
  674. 26:33practices that nurses could partake in
  675. 26:35or some favorites have you noticed that
  676. 26:37that has worked very great for nurses
  677. 26:40yeah I mean I think the again and very
  678. 26:43individual for people
  679. 26:45um you know someone will say oh I want
  680. 26:47to go walk along the beach and another
  681. 26:49person will be like oh I almost drowned
  682. 26:51when I was a kid I hate the beach I get
  683. 26:53nervous by the water you know so it's
  684. 26:55like they like looking at the mountains
  685. 26:57so everyone is a little different but I
  686. 27:00think the most important thing is
  687. 27:01scheduling that self-care activity right
  688. 27:04I mean like it's anything else that we
  689. 27:07would schedule that's a priority
  690. 27:09um so making sure whether it's a hobby
  691. 27:11that someone's picking up whether it's
  692. 27:13exercise that they enjoy
  693. 27:15um for self-care because they find it's
  694. 27:17good for their body and their mind
  695. 27:20um reading a book watching a movie you
  696. 27:23know going for a walk going out in
  697. 27:25nature everyone is different but the key
  698. 27:28is to really schedule it and prioritize
  699. 27:32it and not let that the thing that goes
  700. 27:34off you off your list and you know again
  701. 27:36there's certain things you can do
  702. 27:39um if you start it in the morning if you
  703. 27:42can you know on a day that you're off
  704. 27:44you get it in you know and all the other
  705. 27:46things that get in the way don't
  706. 27:49um that tends to be the one thing that a
  707. 27:51person will let go right I'll do that
  708. 27:53tomorrow I don't have to do that so it's
  709. 27:55scheduling it
  710. 27:57um the resilience part I think is tough
  711. 28:00for for nurses honestly and they they're
  712. 28:02all like interrelated so what someone
  713. 28:04might do for resilience might also feed
  714. 28:07their self-care Cup right or fill that
  715. 28:09cup as well but um the resilience is um
  716. 28:14you know setting those boundaries right
  717. 28:16at work and at home which then would
  718. 28:19help with your self-care so to speak
  719. 28:22and I love how you mentioned resilience
  720. 28:24because these past two years have been
  721. 28:26struggling with resilience and
  722. 28:27overcoming all the hurdles that the
  723. 28:29Health Care system has burdened us with
  724. 28:32especially the the workload so you know
  725. 28:35we could have resilience physically but
  726. 28:37I think it's very important for nurses
  727. 28:38to have mental resilience and one of
  728. 28:41them is just having the mindset of
  729. 28:44overcoming your shifts or overcoming the
  730. 28:47obstacles maybe eliminating the negative
  731. 28:50self-talk that plays out or this is
  732. 28:52going to be difficult this is never
  733. 28:54going to get better because I feel like
  734. 28:56that negative self-talk especially
  735. 28:59collectively on a unit culture which I'm
  736. 29:01sure you could talk about is going to
  737. 29:03affect not only the nurse which is
  738. 29:06providing the care which could be you
  739. 29:07but also it's like a cancer in the body
  740. 29:10that stays there that's affecting the
  741. 29:12whole culture that affects and
  742. 29:14ultimately makes us less resilient to
  743. 29:16overcome a shift right
  744. 29:18right I mean less resilient in life
  745. 29:21right it kind of so resilience I mean
  746. 29:24it's not it's not just for when you're
  747. 29:26at work right if you're not if you don't
  748. 29:28have that resilience and those skills
  749. 29:30that creeps into your personal life too
  750. 29:33because it's not like a switch that goes
  751. 29:35on and off it kind of follows you
  752. 29:37everywhere right
  753. 29:39um so I think um it's really important
  754. 29:41The Narrative that you know that
  755. 29:43self-talk that you you know just
  756. 29:45mentioned is okay
  757. 29:47um and it's so it that's exactly what
  758. 29:51happens in a unit right it's like you
  759. 29:53know it's almost like after you take an
  760. 29:55exam back in the day you know and you
  761. 29:57didn't know about one answer and you
  762. 29:59come out and you're thinking oh I don't
  763. 30:01know if I got that right and you hear
  764. 30:02someone saying oh this is the choice and
  765. 30:05and then other people start and it's
  766. 30:07everyone's talking and none of those are
  767. 30:09the choices that you had put and you get
  768. 30:11that feeling and you say I'm just gonna
  769. 30:12walk away from this right instead of
  770. 30:14chiming in and piling on
  771. 30:16um it's the same type of thing
  772. 30:19um so I think nurses really have to try
  773. 30:21to as best they can
  774. 30:23um change that narrative and we talk
  775. 30:25about that you know in the program
  776. 30:28um because it becomes a habit and it's
  777. 30:30like a tape that just plays over and
  778. 30:32over so change that narrative have more
  779. 30:34positive self talk set boundaries for
  780. 30:37yourself personally at work and you know
  781. 30:40professionally say no more if you need
  782. 30:43to especially now you know with them
  783. 30:47needing uh the hospitals needing nurses
  784. 30:49at the bedside they'll you know wave
  785. 30:52that uh cat in front of you of you know
  786. 30:54that extra bonus or you know time and a
  787. 30:57half or we'll you know we'll throw in a
  788. 30:59500 bonus or you know it's I've said
  789. 31:03some many times to so many you know
  790. 31:05people my in my family and client you
  791. 31:08know comes a point where it's not worth
  792. 31:11your health right your mental health
  793. 31:13your physical health so it's really
  794. 31:15setting those boundaries and um trying
  795. 31:18to
  796. 31:19find that work life Harmony I like to
  797. 31:21call because I don't believe in Balance
  798. 31:24honestly I think you have to figure out
  799. 31:26each of us has to figure out a way to
  800. 31:29live in a harmonious way that works for
  801. 31:32us but it's not balanced because you
  802. 31:35can't balance
  803. 31:37your work and what we're doing as nurses
  804. 31:39and our home there's no balance there so
  805. 31:42I I don't believe in that notion but
  806. 31:45yeah yeah it's a it's a really good a
  807. 31:47really good term work life life Harmony
  808. 31:49because one of the one of the biggest
  809. 31:52things that we see for nurses that reach
  810. 31:54out to us like for help and guidance is
  811. 31:56a lot of them have an issue with
  812. 31:59uh that's a it's an issue with them
  813. 32:03bringing the emotions the experience at
  814. 32:05work bringing bringing that home and uh
  815. 32:08almost like having like self-sabotaging
  816. 32:11behaviors like just just feeling you
  817. 32:14know sad and bad for people outside the
  818. 32:16workplace because they it's hard for
  819. 32:18them to separate their work life from
  820. 32:21their their the reality their their only
  821. 32:23own life at home so what kind of a
  822. 32:25guidance
  823. 32:25um can you give those those uh those
  824. 32:27nurses are Healthcare professionals
  825. 32:29yeah I mean that's it's a challenge
  826. 32:31again it's like a learned behavior right
  827. 32:34um so
  828. 32:35trying not to do that is important I
  829. 32:37think um there again it's going I'm
  830. 32:39gonna say again it's individual but I
  831. 32:42think one thing that is so helpful is
  832. 32:44um when you leave work have some sort of
  833. 32:48a routine so I mean some people I've
  834. 32:50even suggested bringing I mean this may
  835. 32:53sound funny to some people or a little
  836. 32:55weird but bringing
  837. 32:57um you know sweatpants or some comfy
  838. 33:00um clothes that you would normally like
  839. 33:02get into at home like if you're kind of
  840. 33:04winding down gonna put on a movie or
  841. 33:06something and before you leave work
  842. 33:08change into those comfy clothes or bring
  843. 33:12a pair of comfy slipper something that
  844. 33:14like
  845. 33:15just associate you with being at home
  846. 33:18being comfortable winding down whether
  847. 33:20you have that if you have that dry Palm
  848. 33:22obviously if you're taking public
  849. 33:23transportation it's a little different
  850. 33:25but you know get when you before you
  851. 33:27leave the hospital it kind of separates
  852. 33:29right you work from your home I'm
  853. 33:31getting into my comfy sweats I'm putting
  854. 33:33on my comfortable you know
  855. 33:36flip-flops
  856. 33:37um and you know I'm I'm already winding
  857. 33:40down I'm not thinking about work I'm
  858. 33:42making that distinction so I mean that's
  859. 33:44something that people have done that
  860. 33:46find they find it very helpful it they
  861. 33:48shift into that different mode
  862. 33:51um getting on the phone talking about
  863. 33:54you know the patient or what happened I
  864. 33:56mean it's good to debrief when necessary
  865. 33:59of course but not to constantly be
  866. 34:01thinking about it as you're laying there
  867. 34:03trying to go to sleep right you know did
  868. 34:05I give that Med oh I think I gave that
  869. 34:07man or did I you know whatever is
  870. 34:10playing back in your head it's done it's
  871. 34:11over
  872. 34:13um you know that's a little different
  873. 34:14than debriefing from something that may
  874. 34:16have occurred in the unit that you
  875. 34:18should talk about and then come with it
  876. 34:20yeah
  877. 34:23not a big thing especially for like
  878. 34:25newer nurses is is self-confidence and
  879. 34:28building confidence so how can you
  880. 34:32um and like how can you make yourself
  881. 34:34more confident and how can maybe I help
  882. 34:37somebody build their own confidence
  883. 34:41yeah I think for a new nurse
  884. 34:45it's got to be so challenging right
  885. 34:46today I mean I think of the nurses that
  886. 34:48came out during covet you know and
  887. 34:50started just working in that environment
  888. 34:52you know kudos to to them I think that
  889. 34:56um
  890. 34:56finding um one or two people in their
  891. 34:59unit or
  892. 35:01um if they're working you know at the
  893. 35:03bedside in a unit that they feel
  894. 35:05comfortable going to like almost like a
  895. 35:07mentor or you know a colleague for again
  896. 35:10for to talk to to reach out to they feel
  897. 35:13comfortable is key it doesn't have to be
  898. 35:15a lot of people it could be one person
  899. 35:17that you know they could go to to ask a
  900. 35:19question or find support I think it's
  901. 35:21important
  902. 35:23um and building taking the time to
  903. 35:26really think about finding that Mentor
  904. 35:29so to speak um is huge and I always
  905. 35:32found that um I always had mentors
  906. 35:38um for things that I admired right or
  907. 35:40that I would strive for or I'd like to
  908. 35:42say oh I'd love to be able to do that
  909. 35:44one day in my career but I also had
  910. 35:47mentors that I'd say that's a behavior I
  911. 35:50never want to do right so I had mentors
  912. 35:52kind of on both sides of it so to speak
  913. 35:56um where I'd say I definitely don't want
  914. 35:58to lead nurses
  915. 36:01like that person or and then others that
  916. 36:03I did admire what they did and want it
  917. 36:06to be like them so I think a new nurse
  918. 36:09can start
  919. 36:10parsing out you know the people that
  920. 36:13they feel connected to that they could
  921. 36:14learn from that they can get support
  922. 36:16from that they can vent to is K and for
  923. 36:20us as nurses
  924. 36:22um you know being there to support I
  925. 36:24mean it's being you know non-judgmental
  926. 36:26and open and kind kindness right I mean
  927. 36:30uh that's kind of Gone by the wayside
  928. 36:31sometimes uh so yeah just being human
  929. 36:35right and uh just being a kind open
  930. 36:39um accepting person I think is uh is is
  931. 36:43okay and inviting them you know if
  932. 36:46you're getting a coffee break and
  933. 36:48there's a new nurse I mean as a traveler
  934. 36:50you deal with this right I mean you're
  935. 36:52constantly going into a new situation
  936. 36:54it's so challenging you're kind of on
  937. 36:56that other side where you probably don't
  938. 36:58know the staff
  939. 37:00um you don't know the environment you
  940. 37:01don't know the codes to the bedroom and
  941. 37:04you know all these it's hard you know so
  942. 37:07um having that some person that smiles
  943. 37:10at you that you feel that you could
  944. 37:12approach and ask a question is Kitty
  945. 37:14okay and I'm going to add on to that
  946. 37:15point I love the wisdom that we're
  947. 37:17sharing here is
  948. 37:18to to get become more self-confident as
  949. 37:21a new grad is
  950. 37:23be your own or cheerleader so just like
  951. 37:25you are your own worst critic you have
  952. 37:27to give your own hype even though you
  953. 37:29might be looking for it from a preceptor
  954. 37:31from somebody else in the unit
  955. 37:33how about we fill our own cup as well in
  956. 37:35that aspect where after a shift after
  957. 37:37something you did what if you reflect on
  958. 37:40the great things that you did for your
  959. 37:41patients reflect on how awesome your
  960. 37:44shift was give yourself a pat on the
  961. 37:46back because you're going to create a
  962. 37:48Compound Effect instead of giving your
  963. 37:50self your own worst critic or judging
  964. 37:53yourself how shitty it was you're going
  965. 37:55to start re-programming that language
  966. 37:57and saying how awesome my shift was to
  967. 37:58start gaining confidence and other
  968. 38:00things that you're uncomfortable with as
  969. 38:02a healthcare professional
  970. 38:04yeah it goes back to the changing The
  971. 38:06Narrative of what you focus on right and
  972. 38:08what you say to yourself so it's all
  973. 38:10it's all interrelated it's all a part of
  974. 38:12that yeah for sure if we're in a perfect
  975. 38:14scenario and maybe budgets weren't a
  976. 38:18thing and finances what are the things
  977. 38:19that you would love to implement in
  978. 38:21healthcare if you have the ability to
  979. 38:23oh gosh um the magic wand question huh
  980. 38:28you know I think um for patients and
  981. 38:31communities I think access for care is
  982. 38:34like so important I don't think you know
  983. 38:36everybody doesn't have access to quality
  984. 38:39affordable health care which I think is
  985. 38:42key so I mean I think access for
  986. 38:45patients would be number one for staff I
  987. 38:48think
  988. 38:49um
  989. 38:49yeah I think we need to give nurses
  990. 38:53a seat at the table at every table
  991. 38:56you know whatever's being discussed in
  992. 38:59the organization or
  993. 39:01the health system wherever I think um
  994. 39:04that a nurse has to be at every table
  995. 39:07and bring that perspective to that
  996. 39:09decision to that discussion
  997. 39:12um whether it's with the finance person
  998. 39:13or the quality person or engineering or
  999. 39:18you know anything a nurse's perspective
1000. 39:21is huge when we're talking about health
1001. 39:24care so they need a seat at every single
1002. 39:26table that that would be if I could pick
  1003. 39:27one thing
1004. 39:29um that would be that
  1005. 39:30and with with tap you mentioned it's a
  1006. 39:33it's like it it's a 12-week 12 weeks of
1007. 39:37of like coaching and all that kind of
1008. 39:40stuff is can you give us a little bit of
1009. 39:42insight what to expect is it every day
1010. 39:44is a different step do you have the five
1011. 39:47pillars and five different sessions or
1012. 39:49or how does that that uh that work what
1013. 39:51can someone expect if they decide to do
1014. 39:53some of your some of your coaching and
1015. 39:54get some of your insights
1016. 39:56be happy to share that so initially if
1017. 39:59in the group program when the person
  1018. 40:01signs up they'll they'll get a
1019. 40:04invitation to download the tap app which
1020. 40:07is available you know on Google Play or
  1021. 40:10the um Apple Store
1022. 40:13um and people can go on there by the way
  1023. 40:15and just do like a five-day trial for
  1024. 40:17free of that app
1025. 40:19um the coaching is much more than the
1026. 40:21app of course well so they'll sign up
1027. 40:24download the tap app and then fill out
1028. 40:26their intake form and then we do a
1029. 40:28one-on-one call to set up their goals
1030. 40:30for uh what success would look like for
1031. 40:33them at the end of the program and what
1032. 40:35they should what they'd like to focus on
1033. 40:36for the next two weeks we move through
1034. 40:39the program the first two weeks or
1035. 40:41setting people up getting kind of
  1036. 40:44assessing where they're at in each
1037. 40:45pillar assessing their home and personal
1038. 40:49um you know it's kind of stage where
1039. 40:52they are and then we go through each
1040. 40:54pillar for two weeks but it doesn't mean
1041. 40:57that the person that's in the program
1042. 41:01um focuses only on their goal for that
1043. 41:04pillar we move the person through as
1044. 41:08however they need I believe each person
1045. 41:10should always start with their weakest
1046. 41:12pillow right because they'll be able to
1047. 41:14get gain success a lot easier that way
1048. 41:16and then that builds motivation so
1049. 41:19that's always a suggestion but we do
1050. 41:20what people want so someone wants to
1051. 41:22start with sleep but maybe our first two
1052. 41:25pillar that we focus on is food that's
1053. 41:27okay so we're working on sleep with them
  1054. 41:29but they're also learning and getting
1055. 41:31education about food and we take them
1056. 41:34through every two weeks on the in the
1057. 41:37group program we have a live Zoom call
1058. 41:39with the others in the group so they
1059. 41:41build community they can also
1060. 41:43communicate with each other in the tap
1061. 41:46app in the community side of the program
1062. 41:48to share recipes and stuff they can
1063. 41:51direct message me the real purpose of
1064. 41:53the app is for them to communicate with
1065. 41:56me directly so at any point of the time
1066. 41:59they can send me a DM and I can respond
1067. 42:02to them they're going out to dinner
  1068. 42:03they're overwhelmed they don't know what
1069. 42:06they want to eat or what would be a
1070. 42:07better choice for them if it's along
1071. 42:09their goal you know they can send me a
1072. 42:12message or they're trying to go to sleep
  1073. 42:13and they have a question they don't have
1074. 42:15to wait they can just DM me and I'll get
1075. 42:18back to them so that's the main purpose
1076. 42:20of the app but then each day they will
1077. 42:22get a little message from tap in the app
1078. 42:25focusing on whatever pillow we're on and
  1079. 42:28that changes we do weekly check-ins
  1080. 42:30through the app
1081. 42:32we have other calls if needed if they
1082. 42:35need an extra resource lots of times the
1083. 42:38resources that they request are for
  1084. 42:41um you know maybe a meditation or a
1085. 42:45mantra that they want to try before they
  1086. 42:46go to sleep or a recipe they're looking
  1087. 42:50for because they're cooking for their
1088. 42:52family and they want a special recipe so
  1089. 42:55I'll
1090. 42:56research that and send over a recipe
  1091. 42:59collection
1092. 43:00um yeah so we moved through as a group
1093. 43:03and then um at the end yeah and as we're
1094. 43:06going through those weeks with the
1095. 43:08pillars we also incorporate the
  1096. 43:10resilience and the self-care those are
1097. 43:12themes that are carried throughout
  1098. 43:14because it's it's as I said it's all
  1099. 43:16interrelated yeah so that's that's the
  1100. 43:19program as a whole and um it's really
1101. 43:21sad to see actually I got a message uh
1102. 43:24last night from someone who was just in
1103. 43:26the program you know missing you loved
  1104. 43:29you we have a
1105. 43:30a Weekly Newsletter that goes out an
1106. 43:34email essentially that focuses on
1107. 43:36different parts of the program so I get
1108. 43:38a lot of messages from the people who
1109. 43:40still get the the weekly newsletters if
1110. 43:43anyone wants to sign up it's Tuesdays
1111. 43:45with tap so every Tuesday they get a
1112. 43:47short little email about one of the
  1113. 43:49pillars
1114. 43:50um but it's nice because that prompts
1115. 43:52them and then they send me a little
1116. 43:53message so we stay connected it's again
1117. 43:55building Community right being there for
  1118. 43:57people
  1119. 43:58and the the one-to-one program is
1120. 44:00essentially the same type of program but
  1121. 44:02much more intense bespoke
1122. 44:06um you know we schedule the calls we do
1123. 44:07weekly calls instead of every two weeks
  1124. 44:09and um obviously it's scheduled around
1125. 44:13what works for that person and we do a
1126. 44:16bit of a deeper dive there as to their
  1127. 44:19needs some people don't feel comfortable
1128. 44:20in a group setting sharing personal more
1129. 44:24personal information or behaviors and
  1130. 44:27prefer that one-to-one where they can
1131. 44:29really dive deep and spend the entire
1132. 44:31hour talking about them and not having
1133. 44:34to listen to other people so everyone's
  1134. 44:36different
  1135. 44:37good what's the website link
  1136. 44:40uh it's techwellnesscoaching.com
1137. 44:43is there anything that is good no it's
1138. 44:46just say Instagram as well it's all all
  1139. 44:48the same Israel I think that that's a
1140. 44:50prize that surprised you working with
  1141. 44:53with Healthcare professionals maybe
1142. 44:55um for example some wild goals that they
1143. 44:58had or maybe you realized how determined
1144. 45:02to change Healthcare professionals were
1145. 45:04anything surprised you with working with
  1146. 45:05other professionals
  1147. 45:08um
  1148. 45:09surprise not really I mean I think I was
  1149. 45:12a little
1150. 45:13I again I guess just because maybe I was
  1151. 45:16maybe I had a little bias but I thought
1152. 45:18it was going to be mostly food
1153. 45:19everyone's always talking about food you
1154. 45:21know intermittent fasting and you know
1155. 45:24who's vegan who's doing paleo you know
  1156. 45:26so
1157. 45:28um I thought that would be in the
1158. 45:30beginning and as I said it was it tends
1159. 45:33to be sleep but um
1160. 45:36hydration is a challenge for the nurses
  1161. 45:40um
1162. 45:41when the so I think that was one thing
  1163. 45:44but I think the if I now that I'm
  1164. 45:46thinking about it I think um
1165. 45:48the lack of understanding of
1166. 45:52like when we spend that first week
1167. 45:54looking at each pillar for each person
1168. 45:57and kind of looking at there and we give
1169. 45:59them you know suggestions of how to do
  1170. 46:01that
1171. 46:02um I think them not even taking the time
  1172. 46:05to realize that they're sleeping five
1173. 46:07hours one night and 10 or 12 the next
  1174. 46:10that they go for
1175. 46:12nine or ten hours without eating or
1176. 46:14drinking or going to the I mean like
  1177. 46:16they don't even take um
1178. 46:19they're not even noticing you know what
  1179. 46:22really they're doing
1180. 46:24um and I think that was the biggest if I
1181. 46:26had to pick something is the um not
1182. 46:29being aware of how all those things
  1183. 46:31impact how they're feeling
1184. 46:34and then they're like oh no wonder why
  1185. 46:37oh my gosh I didn't even realize that
  1186. 46:40you know and it's awesome
1187. 46:42yeah I was just gonna say it makes sense
1188. 46:44because looking at our educational
  1189. 46:46system in nursing school it's always
1190. 46:49about Patient First Patient First and
1191. 46:51again we're never filling up our own cup
1192. 46:53again and you have nurses that go six
1193. 46:55seven hours at the beginning of the
1194. 46:57shift without taking a single sip or
1195. 46:59even emptying out their bladder so
  1196. 47:01that's a very current theme
1197. 47:03but then they find that too that they'll
1198. 47:06say you know and then the they first day
1199. 47:09off right at home they have all these
1200. 47:10things they want to do and they just
1201. 47:12sleep they crash right sleep 12 hours
1202. 47:15and then if they can you know um so it's
1203. 47:19that you know up and down and it's I
1204. 47:22know what as as one person said often no
1205. 47:24wonder I'm feeling so crappy you know uh
1206. 47:27of course if you look at it and you
1207. 47:29write it down and you see it it's like
1208. 47:31oh yeah makes perfect sense
1209. 47:33and we're in the field of caring for
1210. 47:35people you know because it's so uh
1211. 47:38it's kind of ironic right
1212. 47:41and one last question we'd like to ask
1213. 47:42all of our guests if you have the
1214. 47:44opportunity to have a cup of coffee with
1215. 47:46anybody One Last Time who would it be
  1216. 47:49and why
1217. 47:50Ah that's easy for me that would be my
  1218. 47:52dad my dad passed
1219. 48:00um spoke to about all my goals you know
1220. 48:02I want to write a book by time um
  1221. 48:04whatever 40 or 50. I want to be a fan I
  1222. 48:07wanna and he'd be like uh-huh you know
1223. 48:09that's great you know and encourage me
1224. 48:12um and he wasn't around to see any of it
  1225. 48:14so uh I mean I'm sure he's watching down
1226. 48:17but yeah he'd be the person I'd love to
1227. 48:19catch up the last 15 years with that
1228. 48:22that would be amazing yeah it sounds
1229. 48:24like he was amazing support system yeah
1230. 48:26Terry uh Oregon people find you if they
1231. 48:28want to get some more information or
1232. 48:30seek some some help or some coaching
  1233. 48:33um you can go to tapwellnesscoaching.com
  1234. 48:35email me at info
  1235. 48:37topwellnesscoaching.com I'm on Instagram
  1236. 48:39same
1237. 48:41Tech Wellness coaching and and Facebook
1238. 48:43as I said uh lots of we post it every
1239. 48:46single day on Instagram lots of tips
1240. 48:49um for free and lots of available
  1241. 48:51resources if anyone's interested and we
1242. 48:53have a next group coaching is starting
  1243. 48:56um
1244. 48:57I think it's March 6th of the next group
  1245. 48:59coaching program if anyone's interested
  1246. 49:01you know what I'm trying I'd love to
1247. 49:03also work with Healthcare organizations
1248. 49:05right to help the nurses that they're
1249. 49:08employing imagine when you sign on you
1250. 49:12get some coaching right as part of your
  1251. 49:14uh recruitment efforts
1252. 49:17now to be an orientation so hopefully
1253. 49:20that will come to fruition soon yeah
  1254. 49:22it's a really it's a really good idea
  1255. 49:24man I had a has idea of of I'll go just
1256. 49:27one of your pillars the movement one is
1257. 49:29is like how nice would it be for you to
  1258. 49:31have like a discount for a gym
1259. 49:33membership or a discount for spa access
1260. 49:35just so and that just shows you that
1261. 49:39like your employer really cares about
  1262. 49:41you because he's giving a discount for
1263. 49:43for you not not just some like random
1264. 49:45stuff like you could go far away because
1265. 49:47some people just just maybe can't afford
1266. 49:50it or maybe they need a little bit of a
1267. 49:52push in the right direction and they'll
1268. 49:54go along with a little discount like you
  1269. 49:55said like somebody that they're gonna
1270. 49:57Mentor them or or coach them or just
1271. 49:59have somebody there that they could
1272. 50:01speak to freely in an open environment
1273. 50:03just so they could they could express
  1274. 50:05their feeling because sometimes it's
1275. 50:07hard to to come home and maybe talk to
1276. 50:09your spouse about it that doesn't work
1277. 50:11in the medical field or the healthcare
  1278. 50:13industry and it's and it's different you
1279. 50:15need somebody that has a little bit of a
  1280. 50:17background a little bit of understanding
  1281. 50:19of what you're going through
  1282. 50:21yeah no I I agree I think that would be
1283. 50:24a wonderful thing for as part of
1284. 50:26orientation to you know provide that
1285. 50:28extra support for new nurses coming into
1286. 50:30a facility for a couple months or even
  1287. 50:33as
1288. 50:34um you know a a perk for people who have
1289. 50:37been there a long time for retention
1290. 50:40um to give that to you know they have
1291. 50:41clinical ladders and all these things
1292. 50:43that they give who needs another duffel
1293. 50:45bag or a water bottle right in you know
1294. 50:47something like this would um the costs
1295. 50:50would certainly um the benefits
1296. 50:52certainly outweigh the cost for that for
  1297. 50:54that organization so
1298. 50:56we'll see to be continued yeah thank you
1299. 51:00Terry just want to acknowledge you for
1300. 51:01the awesome knowledge that you shared
