Ep.1 Mesh editing (sculpting) - From AI to Game-ready — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00In this video we're gonna learn how to
- 0:02turn AI generated model into game ready and
- 0:05this episode will be about mesh editing also
- 0:08known as sculpting.
- 0:10Hey guys this is Stef and many of
- 0:11you ask about simple tutorial how to do
- 0:14edits, enhance 3d models you create in 3d
- 0:17AI tools and how to actually bring them
- 0:20to production, do some small changes and I
- 0:22know a lot of people started to play
- 0:25with 3d AI tools without any knowledge and
- 0:28this tutorial is just for you so you
- 0:30get that bare minimum of knowledges so you
- 0:33can actually edit your model, enhance it, use
- 0:36it wherever you want like for videos, for
- 0:38games and it is easier than you can
- 0:41imagine.
- 0:41Let's get started.
- 0:42So for this tutorial we created this nice
- 0:45dino and you can see the reference images
- 0:47we used high temp 3d there is a
- 0:50video on my channel how you can use
- 0:52it and so far I think it is
- 0:54most accurate to the model providing like with
- 0:56a lot of nice details.
- 0:58So we're gonna use blender for all the
- 1:00tutorials because it's free, it's amazing, it's powerful
- 1:04and you can almost do everything you need
- 1:06here.
- 1:07So how to open the model you basically
- 1:09export something into GLB, here is my exported
- 1:12GLB I'll drag and drop it here, do
- 1:15not change any setting, press import GLT wait
- 1:18a while and here is my model.
- 1:20So that's it.
- 1:21Also before we start let me introduce you
- 1:24to some very basic controls that we will
- 1:26be using along the video and I think
- 1:28that's more than enough to get acquainted with
- 1:31the blender.
- 1:31Camera controls.
- 1:32So the first one is wheel, by pressing
- 1:35the wheel we can actually rotate the camera
- 1:37and that's super easy.
- 1:38Another thing is that with pressing a wheel
- 1:41and also pressing shift we can actually pan
- 1:44the camera like this.
- 1:45So this combination of keys is more than
- 1:48enough like to get in every position that
- 1:51we might need.
- 1:52But there is another very useful hotkey that
- 1:55called tilde the key before one on the
- 1:58keyboard and when you press it and hold
- 2:01you will have this sort of menu and
- 2:03if we drag mouse to one of the
- 2:06view and release the tilde then it will
- 2:10actually rotate the camera and we can always
- 2:12continue using wheel.
- 2:14Also we'll be using like simple mods as
- 2:17move rotate and scale and you can actually
- 2:19switch between them here on the left side.
- 2:22Now let's move on to the sculpting.
- 2:24So the first thing we'll do we'll remove
- 2:25the material and do some cleanup after AI
- 2:28generation.
- 2:29We'll do retexturing in the next videos because
- 2:31we'll change the geometry the current texture will
- 2:34not be aligned and we'll remove it and
- 2:36we'll redo that in the next videos.
- 2:38So we need to press on the material
- 2:41tab which is this one and then press
- 2:44a minus button which will remove the texture
- 2:46and we also change modes to solid so
- 2:50we only see the geometry and focus on
- 2:52it.
- 2:52Okay so let's decide what we're gonna change
- 2:55on the model.
- 2:56We will remove the eyes and replace them
- 2:59with spheres.
- 3:01We'll also redo the tooth.
- 3:04We're smoothing the transition to this pattern on
- 3:06a belly.
- 3:07We will rework the stripes to make them
- 3:11more accurate and appealing.
- 3:12There is a problem on the claws we
- 3:15will make them more accurate.
- 3:17Yeah you can see this these areas and
- 3:19under the tail we also extend the pattern
- 3:21and make it more accurate and maybe some
- 3:24small adjustments here.
- 3:26Guys before we continue I really need to
- 3:28know if you need this video and I'll
- 3:30need to continue creating more tutorials like this.
- 3:33Drop a comment, like and subscribe and let
- 3:35me know if that was useful or what
- 3:37to improve.
- 3:38And always remember you can find me on
- 3:40a discord and I'll happy to help with
- 3:42anything related to 3D AI tools.
- 3:44Let's go.
- 3:45Okay so let's get it started.
- 3:46First thing we'll do we'll go to edit
- 3:48mode by pressing this.
- 3:50Then we will go to the edge mode
- 3:53by pressing this button.
- 3:54Press a button on the keyboard and after
- 3:57we are inside the edge mode by pressing
- 4:00right mouse button you will need to find
- 4:03clear sharp and press it.
- 4:05That will basically remove sharp edges.
- 4:07A very important step so our model is
- 4:10rendered properly.
- 4:11You can also see all mouse buttons and
- 4:14keyboard buttons that I press here so don't
- 4:17get lost.
- 4:17And now we are ready to go into
- 4:19the sculpting mode.
- 4:20So let's go to the mode and sculpting
- 4:22mode.
- 4:23So the first thing we need to do
- 4:25is to remesh it and basically that will
- 4:27add more polygons so whenever we use brushes
- 4:30the geometry looks smooth.
- 4:33So in this example we will try to
- 4:35do voxel size or 0.002. We'll press
- 4:41remesh.
- 4:42We'll have to wait a little bit and
- 4:44then we'll see if the geometry still look
- 4:47decent.
- 4:48You can actually play with the button to
- 4:50see if that's enough for your case.
- 4:52You can basically paint something with the clay
- 4:55brush by simply pressing the left button and
- 4:58moving around and if the result is smooth
- 5:01then probably the resolution is enough.
- 5:03If it's too smooth and there's too much
- 5:06vertices and it's too laggy try to get
- 5:09resolution higher but if it's not enough try
- 5:12to get resolution lower.
- 5:13So in our case 0.002 is just
- 5:17enough and we'll be continuing.
- 5:19Another cool thing is that if you work
- 5:21with symmetric models such as mine we can
- 5:24actually split it into the half and mirror
- 5:27it and then do changes on one side
- 5:30and the other side will be mirrored and
- 5:32will save a lot of time.
- 5:33So the first thing we'll go to the
- 5:35front view.
- 5:36We go to the edit mode, wireframe mode
- 5:38and we'll also activate x-ray mode.
- 5:41So whenever we select it will also select
- 5:43something behind the model.
- 5:45We'll try to select the exactly the half
- 5:47of the model.
- 5:48In blender selectors, masks and brushes has option
- 5:52to invert the use if you hold the
- 5:55ctrl.
- 5:56So here you can see by holding ctrl
- 5:58and doing the selection I can deselect some
- 6:00area.
- 6:01Without ctrl it will actually select it.
- 6:03Now it looks almost perfect and we'll press
- 6:06x on the keyboard and delete faces.
- 6:09All right now we can go back to
- 6:11the object mode.
- 6:12Let's find and add mirror modificator and choose
- 6:15x on the axis.
- 6:16It might be a different axis in your
- 6:18case depends on where the model is rotated
- 6:20but yeah.
- 6:21We also activate the clipping option.
- 6:23If everything seems fine we can actually press
- 6:26that arrow down and press apply.
- 6:29Now this is a solid model and we
- 6:30know 100% that two sides are identical.
- 6:34Now when we go to the sculpt mode
- 6:36we need to make sure the sculpting the
- 6:39mirror mode activated at this one and all
- 6:42the changes will be mirrored.
- 6:44But since we did change the geometry in
- 6:46object mode it will not hurt to do
- 6:48remesh once again and after that done we
- 6:50are ready to do sculpting.
- 6:52Here are a few hotkeys I will be
- 6:54using in sculpting.
- 6:55So the first one is F and it
- 6:58is for changing the brush size very easily.
- 7:01So you just press and hold F and
- 7:03move your mouse and left to right and
- 7:05see what brush size you want.
- 7:07Press left mouse button to confirm.
- 7:09You can alternatively change it here the strength
- 7:12and the radius.
- 7:13Also we'll be using M for masking and
- 7:17we'll often use ctrl to do inverse action.
- 7:21So for example if I'm in the mask
- 7:22and paint something and hold ctrl it will
- 7:24actually remove the mask.
- 7:26Same for the brushes if I do add
- 7:28something and then I press ctrl it will
- 7:31actually inverse the action.
- 7:33Okay so we're gonna start with eyes.
- 7:36So the first thing we'll choose the mask
- 7:37we'll set the convenient size and we'll try
- 7:41to paint the eye.
- 7:43Don't forget to make sure the mirror mode
- 7:46is selected.
- 7:47Okay so we'll try to paint an eye
- 7:50and then we'll try to remove the eyeball
- 7:53as it is right now just simply moving
- 7:56it back and adding a custom 3d ball.
- 7:59So here I already finished painting the mask
- 8:01and then we can go to the mask
- 8:04and press sharpen mask that will make it
- 8:07like sharper.
- 8:09With the ctrl we'll remove some areas and
- 8:11we'll add an area to make it final
- 8:13and accurate.
- 8:14When it's done let's do the following.
- 8:16We'll go to the mask and we'll invert
- 8:18the mask.
- 8:19So how mask work?
- 8:21The masked area will basically not affected by
- 8:24any brushes.
- 8:25Now what we can do is go and
- 8:27choose elastic grab make it bigger and let's
- 8:30try to just push this eyeball inside.
- 8:34It is as simple as we use our
- 8:36hands.
- 8:37Now we'll choose inflate and with the ctrl
- 8:41we'll actually deflate it inside and by painting
- 8:45it will just move push it inside.
- 8:49All right so here is the current result
- 8:52and that is more or less enough.
- 8:55Now we'll choose the smoothen brush reduce a
- 8:58little bit strange and smoothen the edges.
- 9:01Also smooth brush is always available by pressing
- 9:04shift.
- 9:05You don't have to switch to the smooth
- 9:07brush you can work with any other brush
- 9:09press shift smoothen and continue using that brush.
- 9:12Now when this is done let's go to
- 9:14the mask and press clear mask and now
- 9:16we need to just fix the eyeball.
- 9:20We'll just use the smoothen mask with the
- 9:22smaller radius and just move the mouse around
- 9:26and make it smoother.
- 9:28When we are back to in a object
- 9:30mode let's press shift a go to the
- 9:33mesh and let's create uv sphere.
- 9:36Let's rotate it by 90 degree so it
- 9:39looks like this.
- 9:40Then let's move it a bit higher let's
- 9:44scale it by dragging that inner circle.
- 9:46You can also do that by hot keys
- 9:49but here I'm showing like how you can
- 9:51use this gizmos.
- 9:52Okay at this stage what we're gonna do
- 9:54is that to go to the object we'll
- 9:57set the origin to the 3d cursor and
- 10:01the 3d cursor must be located in the
- 10:04word origin.
- 10:05If it's not located there don't worry you
- 10:08can always go to the view and there
- 10:10is a 3d cursor and just make sure
- 10:12this one is everywhere zero.
- 10:15This is how you can change 3d cursor
- 10:17to zero.
- 10:18Why do we need it is just so
- 10:20we can set a mirroring correctly.
- 10:22So the origin basically is that point that
- 10:25you drag to move the object or the
- 10:27point relatively to which the object is moved.
- 10:31All right when the origin is in place
- 10:34we can add the modifier called mirror again
- 10:37and we can see that it's here.
- 10:40Also while in object mode press right mouse
- 10:43button and add shade out the smooth that
- 10:46will result in modifier.
- 10:49Then we can go back to the edit
- 10:50mode and let's adjust our eye.
- 10:54Okay let's scale it a little bit let's
- 10:56find the right position smooth to select whole
- 10:59object just press a on the keyboard.
- 11:01Okay and I think that's enough let's go
- 11:04back to object mode and let's select the
- 11:08dino again and go to adjust the eye
- 11:12hole a little bit.
- 11:14Let's use elastic wrap to adjust the shape
- 11:17of the eye hole.
- 11:19Again it's very simple press and drag and
- 11:21it will be adjusted.
- 11:23Also let's use the clay brush to inflate
- 11:26some areas around the eye.
- 11:28Okay so let this right side okay like
- 11:31that let's smoothen it a little bit can
- 11:35reduce the strength a little bit.
- 11:37Let's adjust the shape here a little bit
- 11:40so it's look exactly as an eyeball.
- 11:44Okay and now I think we're happy with
- 11:46the eyes let's move on to the teeth.
- 11:49So what we're gonna do is first mask
- 11:52the teeth and to try to remove them
- 11:54there is a different mask called box mask.
- 11:57This button is mask and this is a
- 12:00box mask.
- 12:01Okay and with the box mask it can
- 12:03be projected from you and we can select
- 12:05them like this go to normal mask and
- 12:09just paint on top.
- 12:11Okay we now selected almost everything just final
- 12:14touches.
- 12:15Now you can see the opposite side is
- 12:17also selected because the mirror mode is activated
- 12:20and if you accidentally select something wrong but
- 12:23press ctrl and paint on top and it
- 12:25will invert.
- 12:25When the job is done let's go to
- 12:28the mask and invert the mask and we'll
- 12:31select the line project and by simple move
- 12:34like this we can actually cut the whole
- 12:37geometry.
- 12:38Now we can smoothen these areas a little
- 12:41bit but most likely will not be enough
- 12:43so here is another cool thing in sculpting
- 12:47that called dynamic retopology.
- 12:50So we'll first clean the mask we'll try
- 12:52smoothen it this part so you can see
- 12:56these small artifacts and to fix them let's
- 12:59activate dyne topo.
- 13:01Okay so let's try use clay brush with
- 13:03the ctrl to inflate the area and smoothen
- 13:06it with the shift pressed.
- 13:08We can also use brush called draw sharp
- 13:11with the ctrl and we can draw the
- 13:14line the separate separator line here.
- 13:18Okay and also use shift to smoothen when
- 13:20we happy right so you can always combine
- 13:23it like a smoothen this part.
- 13:25Now let's enable dyne topo.
- 13:28So first make sure on your object all
- 13:31the modifiers are applied if not you can
- 13:34simply apply it like that just press the
- 13:37arrow down apply and then you can enable
- 13:40dyne topo again.
- 13:41All right so basically what it does it
- 13:43recalculates the mesh and amount of polygons dynamically
- 13:46when you actually work with it.
- 13:48So we'll use the clay brush again and
- 13:50we'll add something and it will recalculate the
- 13:53geometry the polygons and stuff and let's try
- 13:56to smoothen this now and you can see
- 13:59everything is fixed now but be careful use
- 14:01dyne topo only when you really add more
- 14:04geometry because it will constantly increase the amount
- 14:07of polygons and that might result into freezes
- 14:11and stuff sometimes if that's not required just
- 14:13disable that.
- 14:14Okay here is my result so far and
- 14:17I also disabled dyne topo and I think
- 14:20that's enough looks looks very good.
- 14:23Now let's go to the object mode and
- 14:26we're gonna create new twos.
- 14:28So it's very simple let's press shift a
- 14:31create mesh and cube then go to edit
- 14:34mode let's select the top face and delete
- 14:38it by pressing x and choosing like delete
- 14:41face.
- 14:42Let's scale it to smaller scale okay let's
- 14:45move it let's try to position it near
- 14:48the mouth let's add a modifier subdivision that
- 14:52will actually smoothen the geometry let's set it
- 14:55to 2.
- 14:56Let's also add outer smooth as before.
- 14:59Alright so now the shape looks correct go
- 15:02back to the edit mode and try to
- 15:04locate it with the rotating movement we can
- 15:07also scale it a little bit let's add
- 15:10more smooth so there are no any no
- 15:13artifacts.
- 15:14Okay we'll scale down the bottom polygon and
- 15:17extend it a little bit so here we
- 15:19can take a look on it from the
- 15:21bottom view to see that it actually fits
- 15:23top part of the mouse.
- 15:25Now when it's done we can actually duplicate
- 15:27it but make sure you are in edit
- 15:29mode that it will create additional geometry within
- 15:32the object not another object.
- 15:34Okay shift d duplicate and we can move
- 15:39it a little bit you can also press
- 15:40g to move it along the view and
- 15:44s on a keyboard to scale it.
- 15:46Here is our another twos following the same
- 15:48logic I just added the rest of the
- 15:51twos some are smaller and here you can
- 15:53see them now let's go to the add
- 15:55mirror modifier on the x-axis.
- 15:58Okay so our teeth are ready now let's
- 16:01go back to the sculpt node and I
- 16:03can see the artifact here that I want
- 16:04to fix let's press shift on the keyboard
- 16:07and just smoothen this area boom that's fix
- 16:11it as easy as it can be we
- 16:13just fix it that smoothen the area let's
- 16:15go to the side view elastic grab one
- 16:18of my favorite brushes all right a little
- 16:21bit here a little bit here make them
- 16:23a little bit more symmetric okay now let's
- 16:25move to the neck area so first of
- 16:28all I want to smoothen the transition and
- 16:31we'll use a smooth brush again let's basically
- 16:34smoothen all the stripes let's add the strength
- 16:38of the brush we also will smoothen the
- 16:40side stripe all along the body okay we'll
- 16:44completely remove the top stripes and we'll actually
- 16:50draw them ourself let's use draw sharp brush
- 16:54and we will gonna do we'll start from
- 16:58the middle because it's symmetric maybe we'll add
- 17:00more strength and let's start from the middle
- 17:03and draw the line nice so you can
- 17:07see this line looks way accurate and using
- 17:11like the pinch brush will narrow this area
- 17:15and look how better it looks now so
- 17:19actually continue doing the same use the draw
- 17:21sharp and then the pinch brush we can
- 17:24smoothen it with lower string okay so we'll
- 17:28do the the rest and look how beautiful
- 17:30I made it after 15 minutes now we're
- 17:33gonna try to modify the area under the
- 17:36tail so we'll use elastic wrap and first
- 17:38we'll modify the shape of the tail now
- 17:42let's choose the draw sharp brush again in
- 17:45a stroke menu let's choose line instead of
- 17:50space let's make it smaller holding F strength
- 17:54to 0.5 and let's try to make
- 17:58a line here you can see how line
- 18:00work instead of space you can experiment with
- 18:03another modes which one works best for you
- 18:05okay so here we go it's easier to
- 18:08draw the line sometimes but sometimes you better
- 18:11do that manually let's smoothen it a little
- 18:14bit with small strength and and use pinch
- 18:18brush to narrow this line all right look
- 18:22how good it is and we're gonna draw
- 18:24new sections okay so here are the results
- 18:27I just ended like doing the same process
- 18:30as we did for the front side now
- 18:32let's also add some small details we'll be
- 18:37using case sharp brush and we can make
- 18:40you know this small parts connected a little
- 18:43bit deeper and it adds like some cool
- 18:45effect all right now let's fix the claws
- 18:49so the first of course let's smoothen the
- 18:51geometry okay let's smooth around use elastic wrap
- 18:55to adjust the shape a little bit and
- 18:57at this stage we can use crease polish
- 19:00brush and basically add crease around right which
- 19:07will look way way more accurate than it
- 19:10was before look how beautiful it is let's
- 19:13use pinch also to narrow this a little
- 19:16bit okay so here is our claw and
- 19:20here I just finished all in the same
- 19:23manner look how beautiful they are the same
- 19:25exact thing we can do for the claw
- 19:28on the feet absolutely the same logic and
- 19:31here look how nice they look and as
- 19:34a final touch I want to go back
- 19:36to the neck and the body and with
- 19:39the line stroke for the jaw sharp brush
- 19:43we're gonna just make this one sharper more
- 19:47noticeable all right look way nicer let's also
- 19:51pinch it a little bit yeah and now
- 19:54the pattern is more prominent so here is
- 19:57our result look how beautiful it is we
- 20:00have our teeth we have our spheric eyeballs
- 20:04we fixed a lot of artifacts everything looks
- 20:07way smoother the pattern on the belly on
- 20:10the neck and the tail looks just amazing
- 20:12we fixed it all claws on hands on
- 20:16the feet and so on we kept pattern
- 20:18here we adjusted the shape of this area
- 20:21and here we are this is done so
- 20:23we just actually sculpted the model adjusted geometry
- 20:27until the perfect condition adjusted the artifacts of
- 20:31ei model adjusted the smoothness fixed some shading
- 20:34and so on in the next episode we're
- 20:37gonna look how to make the low poly
