Entering a New Era: 4K 3D Spatial Computing in Minimally Invasive Surgery — Transcript

- 0:04It would be 1990, in this
- 0:07room, room five, I saw the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
- 0:10And now, 37 years later, we're going to move into a new era,
- 0:13I believe, where people operate with a virtual monitor.
- 0:17We're about to do a laparoscopic operation,
- 0:19and I'm going to be using a head mounted computer
- 0:22that will project my surgical image virtually in space in front of me.
- 0:25What we're measuring today is two things.
- 0:27Number one, we're looking at the quality of the image.
- 0:30This virtual monitor will provide us with a 4K image any place
- 0:33we want to put it, any size we want to make it.
- 0:35The other thing we're studying is ergonomics, because frequently surgeons
- 0:39have to turn their shoulders to work, but the monitor is in a different direction.
- 0:43So now my shoulders are turning one way, my head's turned the other.
- 0:45For prolonged periods,
- 0:46you can imagine that's terrible ergonomics.
- 0:48With a virtual monitor, you can put your head in any position
- 0:51that's comfortable for you, and the image you're looking at
- 0:53will always be right there in front of you.
- 0:55The really important part that's going to benefit both surgeons
- 0:58and patients is
- 0:58that means we can bring
- 0:59a lot of information into our field that you can't currently do.
- 1:03We'll be able to call up the electronic medical record
- 1:05and review it right from the operating field, sterile.
- 1:07Any X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs that we need and that we used to make our surgical
- 1:12decisions, they'll be available to us right there virtually in our field.
- 1:16As surgeons, I can't have a view that's too clear or too bright
- 1:19and I can't have too much information.
- 1:21And all that not only benefits me, but it's going to benefit our patients
- 1:24going forward.
- 1:253D imaging is very, very desired by surgeons right now.
- 1:29If you use 2D, if you're someone like me who started out that way
- 1:33and I've been doing it 30 years, you can learn to accommodate
- 1:36and work in a 2D world even though you're a 3D being.
- 1:39But for most people, if you give them a 3D view, that's what they're used to.
- 1:44So a high resolution 3D bright, clear image makes it easier for surgeons.
- 1:49They don't have to do you like me and learn extra tricks or tips?
- 1:52This is a first.
- 1:53No one in the world will have done this,
- 1:54and it's going to happen right here at Houston Methodist.
- 1:56And I'm really excited that in my career, I got to see the change to laparoscopy
- 2:02that we initiated here at Methodist and now the change to spatial computing.
