  1. 0:05Hey everyone! Welcome back to The English Leap Podcast!
  2. 0:09your go-to English podcast for learning English and improving your life.
  3. 0:14I’m Erin, and as always, I’m joined by my fantastic co-host, Evan.
  4. 0:20Evan, how are you doing today?
  5. 0:23Hey, Erin! I’m doing great—feeling energized and ready for today’s topic. How about you?
  6. 0:29I’m doing well too!
  7. 0:31You know, I had this moment yesterday where I just sat down and thought—
  8. 0:35why does it feel like some people completely turn their lives around while others stay stuck in the same place?
  9. 0:42Oh, I’ve had that thought too!
  10. 0:45You see someone go from struggling to successful, and you wonder—what’s their secret?
  11. 0:51Are they just lucky? Or is there something they’re doing differently?
  12. 0:55Exactly! And then I started thinking about when I was learning English.
  13. 1:01At first, it felt impossible—so many words, so many rules.
  14. 1:07But then, little by little, things started making sense.
  15. 1:10That’s so true. When I first started learning, I kept thinking, "If I just knew more words, I’d be fluent."
  16. 1:19But it wasn’t just about vocabulary—it was about building habits, changing my mindset, and actually using what I learned.
  17. 1:28And that’s when it hit me—life is the same way! Big transformations don’t happen overnight.
  18. 1:37It’s not about one huge decision. It’s about the little changes we make every day.
  19. 1:43And that’s exactly what we’re talking about today—how to change your life.
  20. 1:47And before we jump in, we have something special for you!
  21. 1:51We’ve created a free PDF packed with practical exercises to help you take real steps to change your life.
  22. 1:58It includes: Key Takeaways from today’s discussion, comprehension questions to test your understanding
  23. 2:06and grammar exercises to build confidence in your English skills!
  24. 2:11And that’s not all! We’re also introducing some intermediate-level words and phrases in today’s episode.
  25. 2:19That’s right! And we’ll take a closer look at them later in Charlotte’s Vocabulary Section,
  26. 2:25where Charlotte will break down those words and phrases, explain their meaning,
  27. 2:30and show how to use them in real-life conversations.
  28. 2:34So stick around—by the end of this episode, not only will you have practical steps to change your life,
  29. 2:41but you’ll also have new English vocabulary to help you express your ideas even better!
  30. 2:47m-hmm! You know, Erin, thinking about what we just talked about—
  31. 2:52how life changes little by little—it makes me wonder why so many people struggle to make those changes in the first place.
  32. 3:00That’s a great question! Change sounds exciting, right?
  33. 3:04A fresh start, a new beginning. But here’s the truth—most people never actually make those changes.
  34. 3:12Why? Because change is hard. Let’s talk about the common reasons people feel stuck.
  35. 3:19Yeah! First, there is fear of failure.
  36. 3:24Many people ask, “What if I try and fail?”
  37. 3:27But what if you try and succeed? Every successful person has failed along the way. The difference is—they kept going.
  38. 3:36Exactly! The second reason is lack of direction.
  39. 3:41Some people know they want a better life but don’t know where to start.
  40. 3:45They think they need a perfect plan before taking action.
  41. 3:49And then there’s negative self-talk—saying things like, “I’ll never be good at this,”
  42. 3:54or “I’m just not a language person.” These thoughts stop progress before it even begins.
  43. 4:00Finally, one of the biggest traps—waiting for motivation.
  44. 4:05People say, “I’ll start when I feel ready.” But here’s a secret: Motivation comes AFTER action, not before.
  45. 4:15That reminds me of when I struggled with a personal challenge.
  46. 4:19I kept waiting for the “perfect moment” to start.
  47. 4:23But that moment never came—until I just took the first step.
  48. 4:27And once I did, everything started falling into place.
  49. 4:31That’s a great point! And I remember feeling the same when I was learning English.
  50. 4:37At first, I thought, “I’m not good at this,” but then I realized—the only way to get better was to actually start practicing
  51. 4:47Exactly! And that brings us to our key lesson:
  52. 4:51Understanding what’s holding you back is the first step to changing your life.
  53. 4:57Once you recognize these barriers, you can start working on breaking them down.
  54. 5:02So, Evan, now that we understand what holds people back,
  55. 5:07the next big question is—how do we actually start making those changes?
  56. 5:12That’s where small, daily improvements come in.
  57. 5:16People often think they need a dramatic transformation overnight, but real change happens gradually.
  58. 5:23Have you heard of the 1% rule?
  59. 5:25Yes! If you improve just 1% every day, you’ll be 37 times better in a year!
  60. 5:32That’s because small efforts compound over time, just like interest in a bank account.
  61. 5:38Exactly! And that ties into the power of habits.
  62. 5:42James Clear talks about this in Atomic Habits—how habits shape our identity.
  63. 5:48Small changes may not seem big at first, but they redefine who you are over time.
  64. 5:55Right! Like reading just 10 minutes a day, practicing English for 5 minutes daily,
  65. 6:01or even replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations.
  66. 6:05And I love real-life examples. I know someone who became fluent in English just by listening to podcasts every day.
  67. 6:13They didn’t start with an intense study plan—just consistent small steps.
  68. 6:18That’s so inspiring! The takeaway here is, small consistent actions lead to big results over time.
  69. 6:26So if you’re listening and wondering where to start—just pick one small habit today!
  70. 6:32Exactly! And you know, Erin, while taking action is important, there's something even more fundamental—our mindset.
  71. 6:41Because let’s be honest, how we think about change makes all the difference.
  72. 6:45Absolutely! There’s something called the Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset.
  73. 6:51If you have a growth mindset, you believe “I can improve.”
  74. 6:55But if you have a fixed mindset, you think “I’ll never be good at this.”
  75. 7:01That’s a huge difference! And another thing—our brain is wired to focus on what we train it to notice.
  76. 7:08Have you heard of the Reticular Activating System (RAS)?
  77. 7:11Yes! It’s why when you learn a new word, you suddenly hear it everywhere.
  78. 7:17Your brain filters information based on what you focus on.
  79. 7:21So if you keep telling yourself “I can’t do this,” your brain will find evidence to prove it.
  80. 7:27But if you say “I am improving every day,” your brain will focus on that progress instead.
  81. 7:33That’s why reprogramming your mind is so powerful!
  82. 7:38Three great ways to do that are affirmations, visualization, and gratitude.
  83. 7:44Right! Positive self-talk like “I am getting better every day” helps reshape our thoughts.
  84. 7:50Visualization—seeing yourself succeed—tricks your brain into believing it’s possible.
  85. 7:56And don’t forget gratitude practice!
  86. 7:58When you focus on what’s going well, you train your brain to see opportunities instead of obstacles.
  87. 8:05That’s the power of mindset!
  88. 8:07It’s not magic—it’s about training your brain to work for you, not against you.
  89. 8:13So true! Now that we’ve talked about the power of mindset, there’s something else that holds people back—
  90. 8:20waiting for the right moment to start.
  91. 8:24Yes! So many people believe that they need to be completely ready before they take action.
  92. 8:31But here’s the truth—you will never feel fully ready.
  93. 8:35Exactly! Progress comes before confidence.
  94. 8:39When I was learning English, I hesitated to start speaking because I felt like I wasn’t ready.
  95. 8:45I kept thinking, “What if I make mistakes?” But the more I waited, the harder it became.
  96. 8:52That’s so relatable! But when you finally took that first step, what happened?
  97. 8:58Well, once I started speaking, I realized that making mistakes was part of the learning process.
  98. 9:05Each conversation, even with errors, built my confidence. I wasn’t perfect, but I was improving.
  99. 9:13And that’s the key! There’s a concept I love—“Done is better than perfect.”
  100. 9:19Too many people delay action because they want everything to be just right.
  101. 9:23But in reality, imperfect action is always better than no action.
  102. 9:29Right! If you wait for perfection, you’ll never get started.
  103. 9:33Whether it’s learning English, starting a new habit, or making a big life change—just begin!
  104. 9:40Small steps will lead to big improvements over time.
  105. 9:44So here’s a quick challenge for you, our listeners—Think of one thing you’ve been postponing.
  106. 9:49It could be practicing English, starting a workout routine, or even reaching out to someone for help.
  107. 9:55And then—just take one small step today! Not tomorrow, not next week—today.
  108. 10:04Because action leads to momentum, and momentum leads to confidence.
  109. 10:09That’s right! Small, consistent actions over time create massive change.
  110. 10:15So don’t wait for the perfect moment—make today the day you start.
  111. 10:20Speaking of taking action, have you ever noticed how much our surroundings shape our habits and decisions?
  112. 10:27It’s not just about what we do, but who and what we surround ourselves with.
  113. 10:32Absolutely! The people you surround yourself with, the content you consume,
  114. 10:37and the mindset you adopt all play a huge role in shaping your life.
  115. 10:42Yes! There’s a famous saying, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
  116. 10:49If you’re surrounded by negative, unmotivated people, it’s hard to stay motivated.
  117. 10:55But if you’re around positive, goal-driven individuals, their energy and habits will rub off on you.
  118. 11:02That’s so true!
  119. 11:03So, how can we create an environment that supports growth?
  120. 11:07First, start by following inspirational people.
  121. 11:11Whether it’s authors, speakers, or even social media accounts,
  122. 11:15exposing yourself to positive influences will shift your mindset over time.
  123. 11:20Absolutely! And joining online learning communities is another great way to stay motivated.
  124. 11:26There are so many groups out there for English learners, book clubs, and personal development.
  125. 11:32When you’re part of a community that values growth, you naturally start improving too.
  126. 11:37And just as important as adding positive influences is reducing exposure to negativity.
  127. 11:44That could mean limiting time spent with people who constantly complain
  128. 11:48or even cutting down on negative news and social media that drain your energy.
  129. 11:54m-hmm!
  130. 11:56That reminds me of when I was learning English—I felt stuck until I joined an English learning community.
  131. 12:02Suddenly, I had people to practice with, share struggles, and celebrate progress.
  132. 12:08That made all the difference!
  133. 12:10That’s such a great example!
  134. 12:13The right environment creates momentum, making it easier to grow and stay on track.
  135. 12:19So, here’s something to think about—who are the five people you spend the most time with?
  136. 12:25Are they helping you grow, or are they holding you back?
  137. 12:29If they’re not pushing you to be better, it might be time to make some adjustments.
  138. 12:34Surround yourself with people and influences that inspire and uplift you.
  139. 12:39And speaking of inspiration,
  140. 12:41sometimes learning new words and phrases can help us articulate our goals and mindset even better.
  141. 12:47That’s why we have Charlotte here to break down some key vocabulary from today’s discussion!
  142. 12:52Absolutely! Take it away Charlotte!

  146. 15:23That’s it for today’s vocabulary breakdown! Back to you, Erin and Evan!
  147. 15:29Thank you, Charlotte! Those were some really useful words and phrases.
  148. 15:33So, Evan, if we had to leave our listeners with one key takeaway from today’s episode, what would it be?

  150. 15:45Small changes, the right mindset, and a strong environment can completely transform your life.
  151. 15:52That’s so true!
