  24. 0:55conversation Jennifer what's the
  25. 0:57funniest thing that happened to you this
  26. 0:59week oh where do I start so I was at the
  27. 1:02grocery store and I saw this huge
  28. 1:04display of watermelons I thought I'd
  29. 1:06impress Everyone by picking the biggest
  30. 1:08one turns out I couldn't even lift it I
  31. 1:11nearly toppled over and everyone around
  32. 1:13had a good laugh that's hilarious I can
  33. 1:17just picture it I had a bit of an
  34. 1:19adventure myself I decided to take a
  35. 1:22shortcut through the park to get to a
  36. 1:23meeting but I didn't realize there was a
  37. 1:25marathon happening I ended up running
  38. 1:27with the runners for about half a mile
  39. 1:29before I I could get out oh no that's
  40. 1:32classic you should have just committed
  41. 1:34and finished the race maybe next time
  42. 1:38all right let's listen to our dialogue
  43. 1:40for
  44. 1:41today pay close attention to the
  45. 1:43conversation and try to catch those key
  46. 1:45phrases we mentioned remember we'll
  47. 1:47explain everything in detail afterwards
  48. 1:49so just sit back and
  49. 1:52enjoy hey how was your day oh it was
  50. 1:56pretty good you won't believe what
  51. 1:58happened at work today my boss finally
  52. 2:01spilled the beans about the new project
  53. 2:03we've been assigned really what's it
  54. 2:05about it's a huge marketing campaign
  55. 2:08we've got our work cut out for us but
  56. 2:11it's going to be a game Cher for the
  57. 2:13company that sounds exciting and
  58. 2:15daunting at the same time yes it really
  59. 2:18is I've been burning the midnight oil to
  60. 2:21get a head start honestly I can't wait
  61. 2:24to hit the sack tonight you deserve it
  62. 2:26by the way how's your dog doing oh Max
  63. 2:30he's great although he did chew up my
  64. 2:33favorite shoes yesterday I guess I
  65. 2:35should have taken him for a longer walk
  66. 2:37classic Max you know sometimes I think
  67. 2:40you pamper him too much guilty is
  68. 2:42charged but he's just so lovable oh and
  69. 2:47speaking of pets did you hear about
  70. 2:49Sarah's cat no what happened apparently
  71. 2:52her Cat decided to take a nap inside the
  72. 2:55washing machine she almost started the
  73. 2:57cycle with the cat inside talk about a
  74. 3:00close call Wow that's scary cats do get
  75. 3:03into the strangest places yeah they do
  76. 3:07anyway what about you how was your day
  77. 3:10pretty uneventful to be honest just the
  78. 3:12usual grind although I did have a bit of
  79. 3:15a mixup at the coffee shop this morning
  80. 3:18what happened I ordered a latte but they
  81. 3:20gave me a mocha instead it wasn't until
  82. 3:23I took a big sip that I realized
  83. 3:25something was off I mean it was
  84. 3:27delicious but still that's not too bad
  85. 3:30at least you got a free upgrade true I
  86. 3:33guess it was a win-win situation but
  87. 3:36then on my way home I got caught in the
  88. 3:38rain without an umbrella I was soaked to
  89. 3:41the bone by the time I got back sounds
  90. 3:43like one of those days hopefully
  91. 3:46tomorrow will be better fingers crossed
  92. 3:49anyway I've got to get going catch you
  93. 3:52later definitely take
  94. 3:55care so that was an interesting
  95. 3:57conversation between two friends what
  96. 4:00did you think Marco I thought it was
  97. 4:02pretty entertaining it's funny how their
  98. 4:04day-to-day stories are so relatable I
  99. 4:06mean who hasn't had a mixup at the
  100. 4:08coffee shop or a close call with a pet
  101. 4:11absolutely and speaking of pets the part
  102. 4:13about the dog chewing up shoes and the
  103. 4:16cat almost getting washed was both
  104. 4:17hilarious and
  105. 4:19nerve-wracking it really shows the
  106. 4:21quirks of having pets definitely pets
  107. 4:24can be quite a handful but let's get
  108. 4:26into the language takeaway we've got
  109. 4:28some interesting words to explain from
  110. 4:29the conversation that's right let's
  111. 4:32start with our first word daunting
  112. 4:34daunting daunting so when something is
  113. 4:37daunting it means it seems difficult to
  114. 4:39deal with or intimidating exactly like
  115. 4:43starting a new project at work can be
  116. 4:45daunting if it involves a lot of
  117. 4:47responsibilities here are some examples
  118. 4:50the climb up the mountain was daunting
  119. 4:52but they made it to the top speaking in
  120. 4:56front of a large audience can be
  121. 4:57daunting for many people the amount of
  122. 5:00homework he had to do over the weekend
  123. 5:02was daunting so if you find something
  124. 5:04daunting it might make you feel a bit
  125. 5:07overwhelmed our next word is uneventful
  126. 5:10uneventful uneventful uneventful means
  127. 5:13that nothing interesting or exciting
  128. 5:15happened right it's often used to
  129. 5:18describe a day or an experience that was
  130. 5:20pretty boring or routine here are some
  131. 5:22examples my flight was uneventful I
  132. 5:25slept the whole way the meeting was
  133. 5:28uneventful with no major decisions made
  134. 5:32they had an uneventful trip just
  135. 5:34enjoying the scenery and
  136. 5:36relaxing so an uneventful day is just a
  137. 5:38typical maybe even boring day our third
  138. 5:42word is pamper pamper pamper when you
  139. 5:45pamper someone you treat them with a lot
  140. 5:47of care and attention often spoiling
  141. 5:49them that's right it's usually used in a
  142. 5:52positive way to describe giving someone
  143. 5:54extra special treatment here are some
  144. 5:57examples she loves to pamper herself
  145. 5:59with a spa day every month parents often
  146. 6:02pamper their children with treats and
  147. 6:04Gifts he likes to pamper his dog with
  148. 6:06gourmet food and cozy beds so to pamper
  149. 6:10is to indulge someone making them feel
  150. 6:12very comfortable and cared for perfect
  151. 6:15our final word for today is mixup mixup
  152. 6:19mixup a mixup is a mistake that happens
  153. 6:22because things are confused or
  154. 6:24mismanaged right it's often used to
  155. 6:27describe a situation where things get
  156. 6:28mixed together in the wrong way here are
  157. 6:31some examples there was a mixup with our
  158. 6:33hotel reservation so we had to wait for
  159. 6:36a room the mixup at the pharmacy led to
  160. 6:39him getting the wrong medication she
  161. 6:41missed her flight because of a mixup
  162. 6:43with the travel dates so a mixup is a
  163. 6:46kind of error that usually happens when
  164. 6:48there's confusion or a lack of
  165. 6:50communication great explanations Marco
  166. 6:53now let's listen to the conversation
  167. 6:54again but this time at a slower pace so
  168. 6:56you can catch these words in context
  169. 6:59stay tuned tuned and don't go
  170. 7:01anywhere hey how was your day oh it was
  171. 7:06pretty good you won't believe what
  172. 7:08happened at work today my boss finally
  173. 7:11spilled the beans about the new project
  174. 7:13we've been assigned really what's it
  175. 7:16about it's a huge marketing campaign
  176. 7:20we've got our work cut out for us but
  177. 7:22it's going to be a game Cher for the
  178. 7:25company that sounds exciting and
  179. 7:27daunting at the same time you yes it
  180. 7:30really is I've been burning the midnight
  181. 7:33oil to get a head start honestly I can't
  182. 7:36wait to hit the sack tonight you deserve
  183. 7:39it by the way how's your dog doing oh
  184. 7:43Max he's great although he did chew up
  185. 7:46my favorite shoes yesterday I guess I
  186. 7:49should have taken him for a longer walk
  187. 7:52classic Max you know sometimes I think
  188. 7:54you pamper him too much guilty is
  189. 7:57charged but he's just so lovable oh and
  190. 8:02speaking of pets did you hear about
  191. 8:05Sarah's cat no what happened apparently
  192. 8:08her Cat decided to take a nap inside the
  193. 8:11washing machine she almost started the
  194. 8:14cycle with the cat inside talk about a
  195. 8:17close call Wow that's scary cats do get
  196. 8:20into the strangest places yeah they do
  197. 8:24anyway what about you how was your day
  198. 8:28pretty uneventful to be honest just the
  199. 8:31usual grind although I did have a bit of
  200. 8:34a mixup at the coffee shop this morning
  201. 8:37what happened I ordered a latte but they
  202. 8:40gave me a mocha instead it wasn't until
  203. 8:42I took a big sip that I realized
  204. 8:45something was off I mean it was
  205. 8:47delicious but still that's not too bad
  206. 8:51at least you got a free upgrade true I
  207. 8:54guess it was a win-win situation but
  208. 8:57then on my way home I got caught in the
  209. 9:00rain without an umbrella I was soaked to
  210. 9:02the bone by the time I got back sounds
  211. 9:05like one of those days hopefully
  212. 9:08tomorrow will be better fingers crossed
  213. 9:12anyway I've got to get going catch you
  214. 9:14later definitely take
  215. 9:19care all right so if you noticed a lot
  216. 9:22of useful phrases came up in the
  217. 9:24conversation let's take a look at our
  218. 9:26fluency Builder fluency Builder today we
  219. 9:30have four phrases that will help us
  220. 9:31express ourselves more naturally the
  221. 9:34first one is Spill the Beans Spill the
  222. 9:36Beans Spill the Beans let's listen to
  223. 9:39how this was used in the dialogue my
  224. 9:42boss finally spilled the beans about the
  225. 9:44new project we've been
  226. 9:46assigned my boss finally spilled the
  227. 9:48beans about the new project we've been
  228. 9:51assigned so basically it means to reveal
  229. 9:53a secret or disclose information right
  230. 9:56when you spill the beans you're sharing
  231. 9:58something that was supposed to be kept
  232. 9:59confidential for example if someone
  233. 10:02accidentally tells you about a surprise
  234. 10:04party they've spilled the beans exactly
  235. 10:06our second phrase is hit the sack hit
  236. 10:09the sack hit the sack let's listen to
  237. 10:12this one in the dialogue honestly I
  238. 10:15can't wait to hit the sack
  239. 10:17tonight honestly I can't wait to hit the
  240. 10:20sack tonight this means to go to bed or
  241. 10:23go to sleep yes it's a casual way of
  242. 10:25saying you're going to bed after a long
  243. 10:27day for instance after after a tiring
  244. 10:29day at work you might say I'm exhausted
  245. 10:32I need to hit the sack perfect our third
  246. 10:35phrase is burn the midnight oil burn the
  247. 10:37midnight oil burn the Midnight Oil
  248. 10:40here's how it was used in the dialogue
  249. 10:43I've been burning the midnight oil to
  250. 10:44get a head
  251. 10:46start I've been burning the midnight oil
  252. 10:48to get a head start this phrase means to
  253. 10:51work late into the night past usual
  254. 10:53bedtime hours right when you burn the
  255. 10:56Midnight Oil you're staying up late to
  256. 10:58work on something for example students
  257. 11:01often burn the Midnight Oil studying for
  258. 11:04exams perfect our last phrase is soaked
  259. 11:06to the bone soaked to the bone soaked to
  260. 11:10the bone let's listen to how this was
  261. 11:12used in the dialogue I was soaked to the
  262. 11:15bone by the time I got back I was soaked
  263. 11:18to the bone by the time I got back this
  264. 11:21phrase means to be extremely wet as if
  265. 11:24the water has soaked through all your
  266. 11:25clothing and reached your bones right
  267. 11:28it's often used to describe being caught
  268. 11:30in a heavy rain without any protection
  269. 11:32for example if you forget your umbrella
  270. 11:35during a downpour you might end up
  271. 11:36soaked to the bone or if you fall into a
  272. 11:39pool fully clothed you'd definitely be
  273. 11:41soaked to the bone it emphasizes just
  274. 11:44how thoroughly wet you are more than
  275. 11:46just getting a little wet so to recap we
  276. 11:49have Spill the Beans hit the sack burn
  277. 11:52the Midnight Oil and soaked to the bone
  278. 11:55great phrases to help you sound more
  279. 11:57natural and fluent in English okay I
  280. 11:59hope everyone enjoyed our lesson today
  281. 12:02we found some really useful vocabulary
  282. 12:04and phrases from the conversation
  283. 12:06between our two friends yes and remember
  284. 12:09to practice using those words and
  285. 12:10phrases in your own conversations to
  286. 12:12sound more fluent now before we go we
  287. 12:15need to settle something important
  288. 12:18Jennifer you're a dog person right
  289. 12:20absolutely dogs are the best pets
  290. 12:23they're loyal playful and always happy
  291. 12:24to see you well I have to disagree I
  292. 12:27think cats make better pets they're
  293. 12:29independent low maintenance and have
  294. 12:31such unique personalities independent
  295. 12:33maybe but dogs are so much more
  296. 12:36affectionate they actually miss you when
  297. 12:37you're gone and can be trained to do
  298. 12:39amazing things cats can be affectionate
  299. 12:42too in their own way plus they take care
  300. 12:45of themselves and don't need constant
  301. 12:47attention they're perfect for people
  302. 12:48with busy lives but with dogs you get
  303. 12:51companionship and exercise walking a dog
  304. 12:53is a great way to stay active and meet
  305. 12:55new people true but cats can be just as
  306. 12:58entertaining they're curious and playful
  307. 13:00and watching them can be quite amusing
  308. 13:03plus they're great at keeping your home
  309. 13:05pest free I guess it comes down to
  310. 13:07personal preference some people love the
  311. 13:10energy and loyalty of dogs While others
  312. 13:12prefer the independence and Grace of
  313. 13:14cats agreed so dear listeners what do
  314. 13:18you think are you team cat or team dog
  315. 13:21let us know in the comments section
