- 0:03>> Hello everyone and welcome to
- 0:04EnglishPod. My name is Marco.
- 0:06>> My name is Catherine and we're going
- 0:08shopping today at EnglishPod.
- 0:10>> That's right. Today we are going to the
- 0:12store because we want to return a
- 0:14product. So maybe the product that we
- 0:17bought had some problem and we want our
- 0:19money back.
- 0:20>> That's right. So let's take a listen to
- 0:21today's dialogue and we'll be back in a
- 0:23moment to talk more about what's going
- 0:25on.
- 0:28>> Hi.
- 0:29I would like to return this TV.
- 0:32>> Sure. Do you have a receipt?
- 0:33>> Yeah, here you go.
- 0:36Actually, I also want to return this
- 0:38keyboard.
- 0:39>> Okay.
- 0:40May I ask what the reason for returning
- 0:42these products is?
- 0:44>> The TV flickers a lot when I'm watching
- 0:47a movie and at times the image is not
- 0:49very clear.
- 0:50>> I see. And what about the keyboard?
- 0:53>> I spilled some coffee on it and now it
- 0:57won't work.
- 0:58>> I'm sorry, ma'am, but we can only
- 1:00exchange or refund defective products.
- 1:02We cannot take responsibility for misuse
- 1:05or damages.
- 1:06>> Fine. I don't know why they make these
- 1:09things so delicate anyways.
- 1:14>> All right, we're back. So now let's take
- 1:15a look at some of those keywords on
- 1:17language takeaway.
- 1:20>> Language takeaway.
- 1:23So we've got a great bunch of words for
- 1:25you here today. The first three are
- 1:27nouns and then afterwards we've got a
- 1:28couple of adjectives to describe those
- 1:31nouns. But first up, we have the word
- 1:32receipt.
- 1:33>> That's right. So we want to return the
- 1:35television and the worker there asks us
- 1:38if we have the receipt.
- 1:40>> Okay, a receipt is a small piece of
- 1:42paper that you receive from
- 1:45a clerk or a server after you buy
- 1:47something. So if I buy a TV, I will have
- 1:51this small piece of paper that says that
- 1:52I paid $500 for the TV.
- 1:55>> That's right. So
- 1:57usually they will ask you for the
- 1:58receipt to see when you bought the
- 2:00product and if you bought the product at
- 2:03that store.
- 2:04>> That's right. So, the receipt has all
- 2:06sorts of information, date, time, method
- 2:09of payment, cost, all those things.
- 2:11>> Right.
- 2:12>> Um and it's very important if you ever
- 2:13want to return something. Now, later on
- 2:16the dialogue, the character explains why
- 2:19he wants to return the TV. Now, Marco,
- 2:21why does he want to do that?
- 2:23>> Well, he has a problem with the TV when
- 2:24he's watching a movie. Uh basically the
- 2:27image is not very clear. So, this is the
- 2:30keyword, image.
- 2:32>> So, image can mean a couple of different
- 2:33things. You might hear the word image to
- 2:35mean a photograph or a picture like on a
- 2:38on a computer.
- 2:39>> Mhm.
- 2:39>> But in this case, the image is how well
- 2:42you can see the images on TV, the things
- 2:45on TV.
- 2:45>> That's right. So, on TV it's like you're
- 2:47seeing many many images all at once or
- 2:50very rapidly together. So, maybe if you
- 2:53can't see clearly, you you say that the
- 2:56image is not clear on the TV.
- 2:59>> All right. So, if it's fuzzy like
- 3:01there's gray and black, the image is not
- 3:03clear. You can also say that, you know,
- 3:05I really like my new TV, the image is
- 3:07very clear.
- 3:08>> That's right. Okay, and not only are we
- 3:11returning a TV, but we're also returning
- 3:13a keyboard.
- 3:15>> All right, a keyboard. A key is
- 3:17something that you can push.
- 3:20Uh but a keyboard is this uh this thing
- 3:24that you use with your computer to type
- 3:26words.
- 3:27>> That's right. So, many of you who are
- 3:28using the website as we speak are using
- 3:31a keyboard and a mouse. So, these are
- 3:34probably one of the two most well-known
- 3:36objects when you're using a computer.
- 3:38>> That's right. And keyboards come in many
- 3:40different shapes and sizes. You can buy
- 3:42French keyboards and Russian keyboards.
- 3:45So, keyboard is the general word for
- 3:48this [music] tool.
- 3:49>> Okay. So, we are returning the keyboard
- 3:51and the clerk explains that we can only
- 3:54return it if it is defective, if the if
- 3:57the product is defective.
- 3:59>> All right, so this is one of those
- 4:00adjectives I talked about a minute ago.
- 4:02Adjectives describe things. So, my
- 4:05keyboard is defective or this TV is
- 4:08defective. That [music] means it doesn't
- 4:10work.
- 4:10>> That's right. So, we have a defective
- 4:12product. It's not working properly. It
- 4:15has some problem.
- 4:17And well, the guy was complaining that
- 4:19he didn't understand why these things,
- 4:22like the keyboard, are so delicate.
- 4:25>> All right, delicate is something you
- 4:27might see written on the side of a box
- 4:30when you receive a package. Something
- 4:32that is delicate breaks very easily.
- 4:35>> That's right. So, you have to handle
- 4:36with care. So, for example, glass is
- 4:39very delicate. It can break easily.
- 4:40>> All right, glass is delicate, but
- 4:43stones, a big rock, that's not delicate.
- 4:46>> That's right. All right, so that's all
- 4:48we have for language takeaway. Let's
- 4:50review everything and listen to our
- 4:51dialogue.
- 4:57>> Hi.
- 4:59I would like to return this TV.
- 5:01>> Sure. Do you have a receipt?
- 5:03>> Yeah, here you go.
- 5:05Actually, I also want to return this
- 5:08keyboard.
- 5:09>> Okay.
- 5:10May I ask what the reason for returning
- 5:12these products is?
- 5:14>> The TV flickers a lot when I am watching
- 5:16a movie and at times the image is not
- 5:19very clear.
- 5:20>> I see. And what about the keyboard?
- 5:23>> I spilled some coffee on it and now it
- 5:26won't work.
- 5:28>> I'm sorry, ma'am, but we can only
- 5:29exchange or refund defective products.
- 5:32We cannot take responsibility for misuse
- 5:34or damages.
- 5:36>> Fine. I don't know why they make these
- 5:38things so delicate anyways.
- 5:43>> All right, we're back. So, now let's
- 5:45take a look at a couple of phrases we've
- 5:46picked out, four to be exact, on Fluency
- 5:49Builder.
- 5:51>> Fluency Builder
- 5:53The first verb we have today here in
- 5:56Fluency Builder is the main verb in
- 5:58today's dialogue, to return. So, I would
- 6:01like to return this TV.
- 6:04>> Okay, so when you want to give back a
- 6:06product, you don't say, "I want to give
- 6:08back." or anything like this. You say,
- 6:11"I want to return this product."
- 6:13>> Well, it's not just giving back. It's
- 6:15giving back and getting your money back.
- 6:17>> That's right.
- 6:18>> So, to return means that you bring back
- 6:20the product and the the store will give
- 6:23you back your money.
- 6:24>> Mm, that's right. And he wanted to
- 6:26return the TV, as we mentioned, because
- 6:28the image was not very clear. But he
- 6:30also mentioned that the TV flickers a
- 6:33lot. So, what is this to flicker?
- 6:36>> To flicker is another verb, and flicker
- 6:39is something that things with light do.
- 6:41The light flickers, the TV flickers. It
- 6:43means the light comes on and off, on and
- 6:46off, on and off. So, dark light, dark
- 6:47light. It's not very steady. It's not
- 6:50like there's a light
- 6:51>> Right.
- 6:52>> dark. And so, this is very annoying when
- 6:54you're watching TV, because it goes
- 6:56light dark, light dark, and it's hard to
- 6:58see what's happening.
- 6:59>> Exactly. So, it's basically, just
- 7:01imagine someone is turning on and off
- 7:03the light all the time. That's the same
- 7:04thing that's happening with the TV. It
- 7:06flickers.
- 7:07>> Exactly. Or like when a light bulb in
- 7:09your lamp, when a light bulb is dying,
- 7:11>> Mhm.
- 7:12>> it flickers.
- 7:13>> That's right.
- 7:14All right, so we wanted to
- 7:16actually return these goods, and the
- 7:18clerk explained that we can exchange, or
- 7:22we can refund defective products.
- 7:25>> Okay, these are two important verbs.
- 7:27Exchange means to trade one thing for
- 7:30another.
- 7:31>> Right.
- 7:31>> So, when I go to a foreign country, I
- 7:34exchange money, right? I can exchange
- 7:36Japanese yen for American dollars.
- 7:39>> Right.
- 7:40>> But at a store, like an electronic
- 7:41store, I I can exchange my TV that I
- 7:44don't like for maybe
- 7:47a really good MP3 player or or something
- 7:50like that.
- 7:51>> So, that's what happens usually if
- 7:53maybe your TV is broken or it had some
- 7:56problem, you exchange it for a new one,
- 7:59right? So, but maybe you don't want the
- 8:02TV anymore. Maybe you changed your mind.
- 8:03So, you want to get a refund.
- 8:06>> So, refund, you hear this word fund has
- 8:08to do with money. A refund means that
- 8:10the store will give you all your money
- 8:12back. So, if I refund my TV, I give my
- 8:15TV to the store, the store gives me $500
- 8:18or whatever the money for the TV was,
- 8:21and I can buy anything else anywhere
- 8:22else.
- 8:23>> That's right. So, this is what happens
- 8:25when you get a refund, very different
- 8:27from exchanging the goods. And finally,
- 8:30the clerk explained that they cannot
- 8:32take responsibility for misuse or
- 8:34damages.
- 8:36>> So, remember this as a phrase. This is
- 8:38really important to to take
- 8:39responsibility.
- 8:41It means that if something goes wrong,
- 8:43you will take responsibility for it. You
- 8:46will handle it.
- 8:47>> Mhm.
- 8:47>> All right. So, for example,
- 8:50the store says that it can't take
- 8:52responsibility if something is broken.
- 8:54That means that they won't pay you back
- 8:56money.
- 8:56>> That's right. So, if you buy a TV and
- 8:59you accidentally get it wet or you get
- 9:01water inside and this is why it gets
- 9:02damaged, then the store cannot take
- 9:05responsibility for this damage.
- 9:08>> Or you can say the other way around. You
- 9:09could say if you're at the office and
- 9:11you make a mistake on a report,
- 9:13>> [music]
- 9:13>> you say, "Listen, boss, I'm really
- 9:15sorry. I take full responsibility for
- 9:17this mistake. You can, you know, punish
- 9:19me or you can make me do it again, but I
- 9:22take responsibility means that I say
- 9:24it's my fault."
- 9:25>> Right, you're guilty. All right, so
- 9:27that's all we have for fluency builder.
- 9:29Let's listen to our dialogue one last
- 9:31time and we can review everything we've
- 9:33just learned.
- 9:34>> [music]
- 9:39>> Hi.
- 9:40I would like to return this TV.
- 9:43>> Sure. Do you have a receipt?
- 9:45>> Yeah, here you go.
- 9:47Actually, I also want to return this
- 9:49keyboard.
- 9:50>> Okay.
- 9:52May I ask what the reason for returning
- 9:54these products is?
- 9:55>> The TV flickers a lot when I'm watching
- 9:58a movie and at times the image is not
- 10:00very clear.
- 10:02>> I see. And what about the keyboard?
- 10:04>> I spilled some coffee on it and now it
- 10:08won't work.
- 10:09>> I'm sorry, ma'am, but we can only
- 10:11exchange or refund defective products.
- 10:14We cannot take responsibility for misuse
- 10:16or damages.
- 10:17>> Fine. I don't know why they make these
- 10:20things so delicate, anyways.
- 10:26>> So, returning goods is a very useful
- 10:28thing if you maybe bought a TV at a
- 10:30department store or an electronic store,
- 10:32then you would want to return it if if
- 10:34you had some problems. Now, how easy or
- 10:37difficult is it to do? Because in theory
- 10:39in in the dialogue it seems like it's
- 10:40really easy.
- 10:42>> It depends on the store, of course. So,
- 10:44some stores uh make it easier to do
- 10:47this. Some stores make it harder. I can
- 10:49tell you in most stores if you don't
- 10:50have a receipt, it's probably very
- 10:52difficult.
- 10:53>> Really?
- 10:53>> Yes. But a a lot of stores have
- 10:56something else that they sell you or
- 10:57give you when you buy something. It's
- 10:59called a warranty.
- 11:00>> Mhm.
- 11:00>> And this is something that will help
- 11:01protect you if you take the TV home and
- 11:04you have a problem.
- 11:05>> Right.
- 11:06>> That means that they will come fix it or
- 11:07they will give you a new one without an
- 11:09any questions about what happened.
- 11:11>> Now, not only can you return goods such
- 11:14as TVs, electronics, or maybe clothes,
- 11:17but in some cases also things that you
- 11:19buy at the supermarket, like maybe
- 11:21chicken. I've heard that maybe sometimes
- 11:23you buy chicken and you open it up that
- 11:25same day and it's gone bad.
- 11:27>> Really? I've never had that that
- 11:28experience, but I I think it makes
- 11:30sense. It depends where you buy it, of
- 11:32course, but
- 11:32>> Right. Obviously at a supermarket and
- 11:34you show the receipt or maybe
- 11:36um milk, maybe that's gone bad sometimes
- 11:38or yogurt.
- 11:39>> Well, because they they probably
- 11:41shouldn't sell it if it's bad. So, if
- 11:42you if you tell them that they sold you
- 11:44bad milk, they'll give you a new one.
- 11:45>> Exactly.
- 11:46>> So, that's called a that's called an
- 11:48exchange. You would exchange the the bad
- 11:50one for the good one.
- 11:51>> Right. You wouldn't get your money back.
- 11:52>> No. Maybe maybe not. Maybe.
- 11:54>> All right. So, that's all the time we
- 11:55have for today, but this is actually a
- 11:57very interesting topic because it has to
- 11:59do a lot with customer service. So, let
- 12:02us know what your experience is with
- 12:04customer service with returning
- 12:05something. Is it very easy, very
- 12:07difficult? Maybe some stores don't even
- 12:09accept returns. They say, "Once you buy
- 12:11it, you cannot return it."
- 12:13>> All sales final.
- 12:14>> Yeah, exactly.
- 12:16>> So, let us know are refunds or exchanges
- 12:19common where you come from? And have you
- 12:21ever had a bad experience where you
- 12:22bought something and it didn't work when
- 12:24you got home? Let us know. Our website
