- 0:00welcome to another video you've got Mr
- 0:01Everything English and today we are
- 0:03looking at AQA English language paper
- 0:05one question two everything
- 0:08education tuition for maths English and
- 0:12science so guys when it come to paper
- 0:14one question two this question always
- 0:16looks at the second paragraph it looks
- 0:19at the second paragraph of the insert
- 0:22and this question guys is worth eight
- 0:24marks now for an eight mark question we
- 0:27are spending no more than 10 minutes
- 0:30minutes and in these two in these 10
- 0:32minutes guys we're looking to write two
- 0:35pretzel paragraphs not three two is
- 0:39enough so eight marks 10 minutes two
- 0:42paragraphs and this question guys is
- 0:45always the language question always it
- 0:48is known to be the language question now
- 0:51when it comes to language what does
- 0:53language mean guys AA tells us this
- 0:56language could mean words and phrases
- 0:58and language could be language devices
- 1:01now when it comes to words and phrases
- 1:04what are they talking about guys they
- 1:06are talking about nouns
- 1:10verbs
- 1:12adverbs and adjectives now what are
- 1:15these for a noun guys is the name of
- 1:18something this could be a table this
- 1:20could be a chair this could be a door
- 1:23but anytime you name something this is a
- 1:25noun then you have verbs verbs are doing
- 1:28words jumping up and down jumping is
- 1:30your verb uh teaching eating these are
- 1:34all verbs then we have adverbs an adverb
- 1:37is a word that describes a verb and an
- 1:41adjective is a word that describes a
- 1:43noun this pen is white pen is the noun
- 1:47white is the adjective so in this
- 1:50question we have to speak about these if
- 1:53we wanted to now can you get eight out
- 1:55of eight just by by just talking about
- 1:58nouns and verbs yes you can we're going
- 2:01to go over model answers where students
- 2:03have got full marks by just speaking
- 2:06about verbs and nouns the whole way
- 2:09through now these come under words and
- 2:11phrases then AQA say guys that we as
- 2:15students should be able to speak about
- 2:18language devices now let me go over 10
- 2:22language devices now these are the only
- 2:2410 that I want us to know for now a
- 2:26similar guys is when you compare two
- 2:28nouns using like or as a metaphor is
- 2:31when you compare two nouns without like
- 2:33or as hyperbole is when you hiy
- 2:36something up it's when you over
- 2:38exaggerate personification is when you
- 2:40give a nonhuman human features for
- 2:42example this pen is my best friend on a
- 2:45matap is words that describe sounds so
- 2:49crack bang Creek boom these are all on a
- 2:52matap rule of three is when you have
- 2:54three words or phrases in a row
- 2:57describing one thing for example this
- 3:00room is spacious colorful and black uh
- 3:05then we have a pathetic fallacy guys
- 3:08pathetic fallacy is when the weather
- 3:10reflects the mood so if it's sunny
- 3:12outside everyone's happy if it's cold
- 3:15everyone's really really sad then we
- 3:17have sibilance guys sibilance is when
- 3:19you repeat words in a row that begin
- 3:22with the letter s for example snake
- 3:24slithered through the sand then we have
- 3:27zoomorphism zoomorphism is when you give
- 3:29a human the features of an animal and
- 3:32symbolism guys is when words have a
- 3:35wider meaning so for example a dagger in
- 3:38McBeth represents death and so on these
- 3:41are 10 language devices that we have to
- 3:44be aware of so for this question guys we
- 3:48have to analyze language language means
- 3:51this and language means this and in 10
- 3:54minutes we're doing two pretel
- 3:57paragraphs now this is how I break down
- 4:00the question so imagine guys we are
- 4:03doing Point reference technique effect
- 4:07Zoom effect and Link that is the
- 4:10structure that we are following for this
- 4:13question when it comes to our technique
- 4:16I always say it guys pick a technique
- 4:19from over here pick a language technique
- 4:22and when it comes to zooming in you zoom
- 4:25in to a word or a
- 4:28phrase easy peasy easy it's a lovely way
- 4:31of doing it so essentially guys you're
- 4:33writing two paragraphs in both
- 4:35paragraphs when it comes to your
- 4:37Technique you pick a language device and
- 4:40when you zoom in you go back to your
- 4:42quote and you pick a word or a phrase so
- 4:46it could be a noun a verb an adverb or
- 4:48adjective and that is what you zoom into
- 4:51two paragraphs guys like that and that
- 4:53is all you are aiming for when it comes
- 4:56to this question what exactly are you
- 4:58marked upon to get top bang to get eight
- 5:01out of eight you must do three things
- 5:04the first thing you must do guys is you
- 5:06must have textual detail all this means
- 5:10guys is you must have quotes in your
- 5:12answer then in these quotes you must use
- 5:16subject terminology now what does
- 5:18subject terminology mean guys here it's
- 5:21referring to your techniques similes
- 5:24metaphors verbs adjectives these are
- 5:26English specific words and then guys the
- 5:30last thing and the most important thing
- 5:32is you are marked upon your effect now
- 5:37AQA says that to get an eight out of
- 5:40eight you must do these three things but
- 5:42these three things for this question
- 5:44must be done in detail and perceptively
- 5:48let's go over the word detail first for
- 5:50you to do these three things in detail
- 5:53you must firstly write a lot but then
- 5:56you get kids saying sir I write so much
- 5:59but I I still get four out of eight I
- 6:01still get five out of eight that's
- 6:02probably because you're waffling you're
- 6:04not answering the question you're not
- 6:07doing what's needed and that is why they
- 6:09have the word perceptive the word
- 6:11perceptive looks at the quality of your
- 6:14work now where does this quality come in
- 6:17there are three things you must do you
- 6:19must pick out techniques you must pick
- 6:21out quotes and you must explain the
- 6:24effect now in this paragraph if you look
- 6:28at the structure the only part of the
- 6:31paragraph where you can be detailed and
- 6:34you can be perceptive is way you can
- 6:37only do that in your effect you can't
- 6:40make your Technique detailed you can't
- 6:42make your quote detailed the only part
- 6:44and therefore the most important part of
- 6:48the paragraph is the effect now remember
- 6:52guys we follow pretel and we must check
- 6:56does pretzel do the job does pretzel
- 6:59allow us to get the high Mark now when
- 7:03it comes to pretel guys you are quoting
- 7:06two times the first time you quote is in
- 7:09the beginning when you give your main
- 7:11quote and the second time you quote is
- 7:14when you zoom in then when it comes to
- 7:17techniques in pretzel we give two
- 7:19techniques we give one technique after
- 7:22our first quote and we give our second
- 7:25technique when we zoom in and finally
- 7:27guys in pretzel when it comes comes to
- 7:29the effect we are doing two effects the
- 7:32first effect is when we analyze the
- 7:35technique and the second effect is when
- 7:38we analyze the word that we've zoomed
- 7:40into so just by you following pretzel
- 7:45you are ticking off each bullet point of
- 7:47the mark scheme two times as a minimum
- 7:51now for English language are you marked
- 7:54on your point and are you marked on your
- 7:56link no you're not you are categorically
- 8:00not marked on these two parts of the
- 8:02paragraph So don't waste your time
- 8:05trying to write a super duper detailed
- 8:09point or a link keep it simple Mr Fisher
- 8:12is presented as lonely Mr Fisher is
- 8:14presented as Brave I'm just giving you
- 8:17examples but keep it simple the reason
- 8:20we still do a point is to make sure we
- 8:22answer the question and we do a link I
- 8:25call it the waffle check if you get to
- 8:27the end of your paragraph and you can't
- 8:29say therefore as you can see Mr Fisher
- 8:33and you can't link it back to your point
- 8:35then you've probably gone off task
- 8:37somewhere but don't get it twisted based
- 8:40upon the mark scheme which part of the
- 8:42paragraph is the most important part
- 8:44guys it is the following guys it is your
- 8:47effect but the only thing you guys need
- 8:50to be aware of is that pretzel is a
- 8:53solid paragraph to use because in pretel
- 8:55because you do everything twice
- 8:58naturally you're going to take off the
- 8:59mark scheme and right in detail the only
- 9:03thing left is checking the quality of
- 9:06your effect how good is your effect that
- 9:09is why guys pretzel paragraphs work so
- 9:12well for this question because without
- 9:14you even realizing you are ticking the
- 9:17mark scheme off as you go along so I
- 9:22repeat language question 10 minutes two
- 9:26paragraphs two pretzel paragraphs when
- 9:28it comes to techniques we analyze this
- 9:31when it comes to zooming in we zoom in
- 9:33to one of these now in your exam guys
- 9:37you plan live on the sheet so over here
- 9:41it says how does the writer use language
- 9:44here to convey Mr Fisher's views on
- 9:47books and stories of the past my first
- 9:50quote that I can use is that Mr Fisher
- 9:53said that books and stories of the past
- 9:56would illuminate minds and hearts they
- 9:59will light up minds and hearts now the
- 10:02technique that I want to talk about here
- 10:04first guys the technique that I want to
- 10:07talk about here first is the technique
- 10:10of Crema morphism now what is
- 10:13chremamorphism it's not on the list but
- 10:15it's a technique that is there crom
- 10:18morphism guys is the opposite of
- 10:21personification guys CR morphism is the
- 10:24opposite of personification so
- 10:27personification is when you give a h
- 10:29non-human human features Crema morphism
- 10:32is when you give a human the features of
- 10:35an object so over here it's saying that
- 10:37stories would illuminate a human being
- 10:41you can't light up a person you can't
- 10:43illuminate a person that is why
- 10:46isomorphism so I've got my reference
- 10:48I've got my technique now what's my
- 10:51point Mr Fish views on books of the past
- 10:54my point is that books of the past guys
- 10:58they were inspiration
- 10:59wow these books were absolutely amazing
- 11:03and that is going to be my point now
- 11:07what shall I zoom into to guys for this
- 11:10quote I'm going to zoom in to the noun
- 11:14hot and talk about the impact that this
- 11:17book doesn't just doesn't just stimulate
- 11:19our mind but it hits deep into our soul
- 11:22and there's one paragraph planned for my
- 11:25exam then guys I will simply plan
- 11:28another paragraphs for my second
- 11:30paragraph guys I could talk about the
- 11:32quote over here that classes was Swept
- 11:35Away in the fever this hair guys could
- 11:37be my second reference and for my point
- 11:42I'm going to say that in this quote
- 11:44books are presented as being addictive
- 11:48classes couldn't get enough that's going
- 11:50to be my point for my technique I'm
- 11:53going to keep it simple guys we're going
- 11:55to go for a hyperbole
- 12:00and when we zoom in I'm going to zoom in
- 12:05to the verb of swept and there we have
- 12:10my two paragraphs planned that is
- 12:13exactly what you would do in a live exam
- 12:17I've got my two points my first point is
- 12:20that books are inspirational or were
- 12:22inspirational my second point is books
- 12:25were addictive my first reference is
- 12:27Illuminating minds and hearts my second
- 12:29reference is that classes were Swept
- 12:31Away in the fever my first technique was
- 12:35chorismic was hyperon and for my first
- 12:38quote I zoomed into the noun and for my
- 12:41second quote I zoomed into the verb
- 12:44lovely now all I would do in an exam is
- 12:47I would write out these two paragraphs I
- 12:50want to show you guys a model answer
- 12:53that was published by the exam boards
- 12:55last year this answer guys received
- 12:58eight out of eight it wasn't written by
- 13:01myself it was written by a student who
- 13:03sat the gcsc and they received eight out
- 13:06of eight the first thing you will notice
- 13:09is guys is they have written two
- 13:12paragraphs not three not four but
- 13:15they've written two paragraphs in both
- 13:18paragraphs they've got one main
- 13:22quote and then they go ahead and they
- 13:26attach a zooming in to that main
- 13:30quote and in both paragraph guys they
- 13:33analyze so this one analyzed a simile
- 13:36and this one analyzed a noun and then
- 13:39the reason they got eight out of eight
- 13:41is because pretty much everything else
- 13:44in the paragraph is pure effect they hit
- 13:48the mark scheme beautifully have they
- 13:50got quotes yep they've got four quotes
- 13:53two for the first one two for the second
- 13:54one that's it not 10,000 quotes not
- 13:58eight quotes not 16 quotes two for each
- 14:01paragraph which is exactly what we do in
- 14:03pret then each paragraph I say to you
- 14:07guys have two techniques one technique
- 14:09at the top and one when you zoom in this
- 14:12kid literally only had one over here the
- 14:14noun and over here a simile very basic
- 14:17techniques but what does that prove it
- 14:19doesn't matter about the technique you
- 14:21pick it matters what you do with it and
- 14:23then guys beautifully they explained the
- 14:26effect let's read the first paragraph
- 14:29the writer presents the Hyena's
- 14:30appearance as repulsive and unpleasant
- 14:33painting it as an outcast amongst the
- 14:35animal kingdom that's their point that
- 14:36basically this hyena is buts this hyena
- 14:38is absolutely ugly the use of the noun
- 14:41phrase bungal mix of colors to describe
- 14:44its first suggest its design is one with
- 14:46no purpose and seems to be in
- 14:48afterthought as the colors are combined
- 14:50together in an arbitrary fashion
- 14:52compared to the Lepard spot will serve
- 14:54as camouflage furthermore it could be
- 14:56argu the color the fur and then the
- 14:58writer basically got guys continues to
- 15:00explain the effect of it being described
- 15:02like that they got eight out of
- 15:06eight this is the most recent exam this
- 15:09is June
- 15:102023 you can see what they are awarding
- 15:14eight out of A2 two paragraphs 10
- 15:17minutes and guys you simply have you
- 15:20simply have to take away on the mark
- 15:24schem you give your point you give your
- 15:26quote you give your Technique you
- 15:28explain the effect then you zoom in to a
- 15:31word you give the effect you link it all
- 15:33up peace out you go home and you do that
- 15:36twice guys that is how you go about
- 15:39answering question number two my advice
- 15:43to you guys would be this now that we've
- 15:46covered everything you need for paper
- 15:48one question number two try your best to
- 15:51write out these two paragraphs and see
- 15:53how you get on they planned for you on
- 15:55the screen write out this paragraph
- 15:57write out this paragraph spending 5
- 15:59minutes on each paragraph then guys
- 16:01should you want more past papers go to
- 16:04everything education. co.uk click on
- 16:06past papers and go through each of them
- 16:08and simply try to do as many question
- 16:11twos as possible let me talk you through
- 16:14quickly how you structure one so let's
- 16:17say we're doing the blue paragraph in
- 16:20Source a Mr Fisher sorry in Source a the
- 16:23writer presents Mr Fisher's views on
- 16:26books of the past as them being very
- 16:29very addictive this can be seen in the
- 16:31quote that classes were Swept Away in
- 16:33the fever the use of hyperbole shows how
- 16:37the classes could not resist the alert
- 16:40of the books it was as though they were
- 16:42simple victims to the power and the
- 16:44interest of these books I explain the
- 16:46effect of that furthermore when we zoom
- 16:49in to the verb swept it implies that
- 16:54these students were swept off their feet
- 16:58the books were Mesmerizing the books
- 17:00were amazing the books took them to a
- 17:03place that they've never been to before
- 17:05explain the effect and as a result they
- 17:08wanted to read more and more therefore
- 17:11you can see now I'm linking it that
- 17:13books of the past were extremely
- 17:15addictive now obviously guys if I write
- 17:17that out I would do a lot more detail
- 17:19but I'm just giving you a quick
- 17:21structure of how you may go about
- 17:24approaching this question all right guys
- 17:27and that is how you do paper one
- 17:30question number
- 17:32two peace everything
- 17:35education tuition for maths English and
- 17:38science
