- 2:22all right
- 2:24um just some Zoom Basics while we're
- 2:25here today it's a zoom webinar not a

- 2:45you're asked to participate but how
- 2:46we'll do it today is you will
- 2:49participate through multimeter which
- 2:51um we will show you the code oh actually
- 2:54the code is in Baseline as well it's 35
- 2:5756 46 9. if you want to go in there and
- 3:03um just have a look go into
- 3:05www.mentin.com and enter this code just
- 3:08so we're ready because there's a
- 3:10question coming up next for you guys
- 3:13um yeah that would be amazing go in and
- 3:15try it now
- 3:17and then in the event that there is a
- 3:19problem with zoom you use the orange
- 3:22original link you were used
- 3:25um to access the event and if it can be
- 3:28used to tight and we will be sending you
- 3:30an update via email so we will know
- 3:33uh awesome so is everyone in mentimira
- 3:37because in one second we will be doing a
- 3:42question all right so
- 3:44um first things first let me go through
- 3:46the agenda and session outline of today
- 3:49so this session is not designed for you
- 3:52to learn new things because it's a
- 3:55revision session so you will we will be
- 3:58consolidating everything you've learned
- 4:00if you have any gaps yes you will learn
- 4:03some new things
- 4:05um and what I'm hoping for us to have
- 4:08done after this is for you to just say
- 4:12okay I'm ready to Ace the exam now I can
- 4:16go in confident
- 4:18um I know how to answer all the
- 4:19questions and I have now remembered how
- 4:24to do it best and yeah basically say I
- 4:27am ready I have revised and I will do
- 4:31great
- 4:33um all right so what we'll do is we'll
- 4:34go through analytical text response
- 4:36first
- 4:37um we'll go through the key criteria the
- 4:39types of prompts there are in a text
- 4:41response we'll go through how to build a
- 4:43contention what kind of structure your
- 4:45paragraphs and your essays should have
- 4:48and we'll do a sample text breakdown
- 4:50which is awesome and I found I find that
- 4:53that's the most useful thing you can do
- 4:55to learn how to write an essay and then
- 4:57of course we'll be talking about them
- 4:59symbols and motifs we will then move on
- 5:01to language analysis and listening task
- 5:04um and we'll go through all the
- 5:06essentials for from each tasks as well
- 5:09all right now before we jump in to the
- 5:15actual session can we all go into
- 5:18mentimira and enter this code
- 5:28and the question that we have over there
- 5:38is how are you feeling about the AAL
- 5:42exam
- 5:43and this is just a test so let me see
- 5:49we have two people in there
- 5:56confident
- 5:58nervous yeah
- 6:02that's completely normal guys
- 6:08I think I just need to
- 6:11um change to my hearts but I think my
- 6:13video is getting glitzy
- 6:15so give me one second but everyone enter
- 6:18how you're feeling right now about the
- 6:19exam
- 6:29awesome I hope my video is better now um
- 6:32that I can give me a thumbs up in the
- 6:35chat if it is
- 6:48is my video better now
- 6:50give me a thumbs up azetta
- 6:53all right awesome I have nervous I've
- 6:55worried but I have also got confident
- 6:57prepared ready and excited
- 6:59um which is awesome and I love to see
- 7:03people being ready already but don't
- 7:07worry if you're feeling nervous if
- 7:08you're feeling worried that's why we're
- 7:09here today and I hope that everyone will
- 7:12be feeling amazing before we leave the
- 7:16session and ready to go into the exam
- 7:18you will never stop feeling nervous I
- 7:21think but it's a good thing
- 7:24um stress is a good thing it helps you
- 7:26prefer
- 7:28um awesome all right it's so good to see
- 7:31people feeling confident though let's
- 7:33jump into the session
- 7:37um and see our first thing for today so
- 7:42we have a typical performance in its
- 7:45range this is basically the marking
- 7:47rubric that
- 7:50um has been giving to us has been given
- 7:52to us by vcaa just to see what kind of
- 7:56Texas funds essays get the full marks
- 7:59the best marks so in the very high range
- 8:02of everything in the first one we have
- 8:06sophisticated understanding of the world
- 8:08of the text
- 8:09through an insightful analysis of the
- 8:12explicit and implied values it expresses
- 8:14and how the author has responded to
- 8:16different contexts audiences and
- 8:18purposes
- 8:20a lot of a lot of words that are like
- 8:24okay what did I just read
- 8:27um so what we'll do is we will instead
- 8:30of reading this and being like all right
- 8:32take take we will see what it actually
- 8:35means
- 8:37so the vcaa task description is to
- 8:41identify discuss and analyze how the
- 8:45features of selected texts create
- 8:47meaning and how they influence
- 8:48interpretation so what does create
- 8:51meaning and influence interpretation
- 8:53mean it means that you and I and azada
- 8:59and everyone else when we read a text we
- 9:02will see different things because we
- 9:05interpret it in different ways so how
- 9:07does this person think differently of
- 9:09the different elements presented so for
- 9:12a good high scoring analysis you will be
- 9:15able to identify you know a group of
- 9:18people who will be who will interpret
- 9:20specific elements of the text this way
- 9:25so in identifying and analyzing explicit
- 9:27and implied ideas what does this mean
- 9:30there will be ideas that are explicitly
- 9:33presenting so you'll be able to see and
- 9:37um read what they are and what they mean
- 9:40but others will be implied through
- 9:43something we call symbolism themes
- 9:46motifs metaphors and other techniques
- 9:49which is all the things that we will be
- 9:51talking about today
- 9:53so you need to be able to identify and
- 9:55analyze both in a text and examine ways
- 9:59in which readers are invited to respond
- 10:01to text so it's it's not so passive it's
- 10:05also active reading because you're
- 10:07invited to respond to it so what this
- 10:11means is authorial intent
- 10:13an authorial intent is how is the author
- 10:17of the text so let's say
- 10:19um euripides for example positioning the
- 10:22audience to feel so through the use of
- 10:27this and this mechanism their
- 10:30positioning you to feel a certain way it
- 10:33can be feel
- 10:35um sad guilty can be different things or
- 10:38putting you into perspective and into
- 10:40thinking something for a sky for high
- 10:43scoring response this also needs to be
- 10:45explored and I'll show you how to do
- 10:46this in um later on in this presentation
- 10:50so they develop and justify their own
- 10:53detailed interpretations of texts so
- 10:56justifying means always using evidence
- 10:59to explain what you're saying so why are
- 11:02you saying what you're saying and the
- 11:04evidence goes into your paragraph in a
- 11:06tail
- 11:07um structure so topic sentence evidence
- 11:09elaboration and linking back to the
- 11:11topic
- 11:15now there are some things that you don't
- 11:19do in text response in order to get this
- 11:23high scoring
- 11:24um high scoring Mark that you want so
- 11:27don't be dismissive of portions of a
- 11:30topic of a prompt so you need to answer
- 11:32everything and don't rewrite it to suit
- 11:37um your own approach so don't memorize
- 11:39an essay and say all right now every
- 11:44prompt I get I can answer because I can
- 11:46just tweak it a little bit no don't do
- 11:49that and don't list examples without
- 11:53analyzing them so don't forget to
- 11:56elaborate don't ignore the instruction
- 11:58in the question so if it says do you
- 12:01agree you have to answer that if it says
- 12:03discuss you have to answer that
- 12:06do not wrote learn an essay as I said
- 12:09before don't memorize it
- 12:11and don't ignore the topic chosen all
- 12:15right yeah I don't think any one of you
- 12:17will do that but I think it's better to
- 12:19State it than leave it unsaid so don't
- 12:22don't focus on something else that's
- 12:25outside of the topic
- 12:28all right amazing and that leads us to
- 12:31the first official section of this
- 12:33presentation which says types of prompts
- 12:36so what types of prompts of topics or
- 12:39whatever you want to call it questions
- 12:41you will get in the exam we'll tell you
- 12:44more about how to answer it so I just
- 12:46wanted to go through and show you some
- 12:48of these
- 12:51so first first type is theme based a
- 12:55theme-based prompt and I think this is
- 12:56my favorite one because there's so much
- 12:59analysis you can do on this one
- 13:02so for example in after Darkness we have
- 13:06enough to darkerness racism affects
- 13:09everyone's life discuss so the theme
- 13:11given here is racism what do you do when
- 13:14you're given this type of prompt you
- 13:17need to brainstorm and plant towards the
- 13:19theme that has been mentioned up here so
- 13:21racism and any other such a thing might
- 13:24be linked to the topic
- 13:26but the thing is you have to focus your
- 13:30whole essay
- 13:33in like
- 13:35around racism and how it affects
- 13:37everyone's life so you need to find
- 13:40examples that relate to this and
- 13:42something you can do to help you is
- 13:44highlight the keyword
- 13:45um definitely highlight this one and
- 13:49also anything else that might be
- 13:52relevant so racism is but also how it
- 13:54affects everyone's life
- 13:57um someone in the chart is asking if you
- 13:59can have access to the slides yes you
- 14:03definitely do
- 14:05um just give me a second to confirm well
- 14:07where you will get that and someone will
- 14:10get back to you
- 14:13now if you have any questions sorry I um
- 14:16forgot to mention if you have any
- 14:18questions while we're um doing this
- 14:21while we're going through the
- 14:22presentations go through mentimira and
- 14:26you will find a q a in there
- 14:29and yeah don't forget to use this code
- 14:32awesome now the next type is
- 14:35character-based prompts for example The
- 14:38Crucible we have John Proctor is
- 14:41overwhelmed by essential shame do you
- 14:43agree now this one can someone can argue
- 14:47that it might be both a character-based
- 14:50one or and
- 14:53um uh what's shame I think it leads to a
- 14:57theme
- 14:59um it leads to a path of a thin-based
- 15:01front but because it's picking
- 15:04specifically about one character it's a
- 15:06character based one so what you need to
- 15:09do to
- 15:11um
- 15:14what you need to do to answer this
- 15:18effectively is just relate everything to
- 15:21this specific character and discuss how
- 15:23his actions are influenced and
- 15:25interrelated with other events and
- 15:27actions that are presented in the prompt
- 15:30like how um is overwhelmed by a sense of
- 15:34Shame don't just say how he's
- 15:36overwhelmed
- 15:37you need to answer all every and
- 15:40everything in the prompt
- 15:42the next one we have is a how-based
- 15:45prompt so for example in nine days we
- 15:49have how does nine days explore the
- 15:51connections that keep people together so
- 15:54when you're asked how does the author do
- 15:57these things you are meant to discuss
- 16:00metal language so
- 16:03what is a meta language it's basically
- 16:07language talking about language or
- 16:10literary techniques so you want to speak
- 16:13about if it's a book you want to speak
- 16:15about
- 16:17um symbolism you want to speak about
- 16:20if it's in first third person
- 16:22Etc so how does the author do these
- 16:25things how do they present a point using
- 16:28which elements so what themes and
- 16:30symbols and motives are they using
- 16:33and how do they make the audience feel
- 16:37so you're meant to discuss all of these
- 16:39how things
- 16:41and then we have a metal language based
- 16:43prompt which is basically the same as a
- 16:46how but it's it's brings like symbols
- 16:52themes and motives straightforward like
- 16:55it asks you how does such puppy use
- 16:58symbols to understand how changing the
- 17:00world so it's asking how but it's also
- 17:05bringing forward what exactly what
- 17:09specific thing they want they want meta
- 17:11language so you've just meant to discuss
- 17:13the literary techniques and meddling
- 17:17with language speaking about language
- 17:22and the last one which is also a very
- 17:26good one for
- 17:27um just discussing interpretation
- 17:30[Music]
- 17:31um going into a thorough discussion is a
- 17:36quote-based prompt for example um and
- 17:38this is from the text Extinction you've
- 17:40got to believe in your own species Piper
- 17:42in the human capacity to achieve great
- 17:44things how does a play explore Harry's
- 17:47idea so what you're meant to do is
- 17:50interpret the themes and issues so again
- 17:53we have themes same symbols interpret
- 17:56the themes and issues that are addressed
- 17:58in the quote and bring them into
- 18:00discussion so what have we got here we
- 18:03have
- 18:04believe in your own spaces so we have
- 18:08hope in the human capacity to achieve
- 18:10great things we have hope so you need to
- 18:12contextualize it and use it in your
- 18:14analysis so you're not meant to say okay
- 18:17this quote means this and this no what
- 18:20you're meant to do is identify what what
- 18:24kind of context it comes from
- 18:27because you will know the book so you
- 18:29will know when it was said you'll know
- 18:32um what happened in that time and you
- 18:34will know the themes and issues that
- 18:36surround it
- 18:39um which you will need to use
- 18:41all right awesome so which leads us to
- 18:44our first actually kind of second but
- 18:46first activity for the day so go into
- 18:51menti 35 56 46 9.
- 18:56um and let's see what we have got here I
- 19:01have some questions for you
- 19:07[Music]
- 19:16can I wait a little bit more
- 19:19[Music]
- 19:28all right waiting for 350 to joining us
- 19:31it's a quick quiz
- 19:34um distress yeah
- 19:37I'm sorry that we just learned
- 19:41foreign
- 19:42[Music]
- 19:53[Music]
- 20:13foreign
- 20:15[Music]
- 20:24all right I'm just gonna stop the music
- 20:30all right
- 20:31sorry about this
- 20:33um okay so it is an example of a
- 20:35thin-based prompt let's see why it's not
- 20:38a character based prompt discuss the
- 20:41role of poetry and
- 20:44um music in the lives of the characters
- 20:46in The Golden Age
- 20:48it's not an example of a character-based
- 20:51front because it's not asking us to
- 20:53answer specifically about one
- 20:58um about one character so if it said
- 21:00discuss the role of poetry and music in
- 21:03the life of blah blah blah a specific
- 21:06character it would be a character based
- 21:08one but it's not because instead it's
- 21:12asking us to discuss the role of poetry
- 21:14music generally in the text and in the
- 21:17character's life so all characters so
- 21:19it's a theme based prompt and it's not a
- 21:22quote based from because it's not giving
- 21:23us a quote to answer
- 21:26all right amazing um I can see some
- 21:29people joined us just now if you did go
- 21:32into
- 21:33www.mentin.com and use the quote the
- 21:36code
- 21:383556.469 to join our little quiz we have
- 21:42one more question for our first activity
- 21:45um and I'm just gonna post the link to
- 21:48the presentation
- 21:49um if you want to press that and come in
- 21:51more quickly
- 21:53I'll Wait Another Minute for you to do
- 21:57that and then I'll move into the next
- 21:59question
- 22:08all right we already have someone in the
- 22:11Q a okay I think um what we'll do guys
- 22:14is before a break we'll go in and answer
- 22:17some questions you have built there for
- 22:19us
- 22:21all right awesome
- 22:23um I think if anyone has trouble joining
- 22:26let us know in the chat otherwise I
- 22:29think I'm just going to move on to the
- 22:33next question of the quiz
- 22:36all right next slide question two
- 22:47what kind of prompt is this uh we
- 22:50already talked about that but that's
- 22:52right how does the shoppie use symbols
- 22:55to understand how a changing world
- 23:06what is it
- 23:11uh no we just talked about it guys so
- 23:14it's a how based prompt and a metal
- 23:17language based from because it's asking
- 23:19us
- 23:20how does satrapy use symbols to
- 23:24understand her changing world so it's
- 23:26asking us about meta language
- 23:30um and about how
- 23:33um
- 23:36okay so I am not familiar with all texts
- 23:39but I I can see how this one confused
- 23:42you because of the name it has in here
- 23:45and because you also might not be
- 23:47familiar and think that this is
- 23:50um
- 23:50like a character based prompt okay so
- 23:53let's talk about it a little bit when
- 23:55you see how and when you say symbols
- 23:59um that directly leads you to metal
- 24:02language and how based front and so
- 24:04trappy is the author so that's why it's
- 24:07not a character based prompt sorry if
- 24:10that was a bit confusing guys
- 24:13um but I hope that clears it up a little
- 24:16bit for you
- 24:20all right next up
- 24:24let's
- 24:26um actually give me one second
- 24:34because I believe this was all for our
- 24:36first activity
- 24:38all right awesome
- 24:40um let's jump back to our presentation
- 24:43guys
- 24:46and go into section 1.1 and now we'll be
- 24:50talking about building a contention and
- 24:52formulating your arguments
- 24:56um and now when you hear contention
- 24:59arguments
- 25:01um I think your
- 25:04you're you're thinking okay easy things
- 25:07um contention is what I think it's just
- 25:10me speaking but in reality there are
- 25:13some things you need to take to have a
- 25:15good contention so let's have a look
- 25:17into what these are
- 25:19so first things first a contention is
- 25:21your view of the text in response to
- 25:24your prompt so answering the question
- 25:27that have been provided to you
- 25:29while saying
- 25:31to what extent you do you agree with
- 25:34this or do you disagree with what has
- 25:37been said in the prompt
- 25:40now with sports design are relevant to
- 25:43your contention we have detailed
- 25:46knowledge and understanding of the
- 25:48selected text demonstrated appropriately
- 25:51in response to the task so this one is
- 25:54the first key point you need to respond
- 25:58to it appropriately and so that you have
- 26:01developed detailed knowledge of it
- 26:03development in the writing of a coherent
- 26:06and effective structure in response to
- 26:08the task and control in the use of
- 26:10expressive and effective language
- 26:12appropriate to the task so everything
- 26:14that are like relating to the task speak
- 26:17about the prompt
- 26:20all right now steps to writing a
- 26:24successful to answering a prompt
- 26:26successfully and to writing a good
- 26:28contention
- 26:29so
- 26:31first is exactly answering your prompt
- 26:36um which is why I showed you the types
- 26:39of prompts first and I'm doing this um
- 26:41second so you need to identify which one
- 26:44of the categories does your prompt
- 26:45belong to is it a how base is it a theme
- 26:47based prompt and what are the key words
- 26:51in the prompt this will help you stay in
- 26:54the topic and answer the correct
- 26:56question rather than you know
- 26:58trying to um fit all other information
- 27:02in what is your stance so what do you
- 27:05believe do you agree do you disagree the
- 27:07there is no right question but people
- 27:11used to say people
- 27:13um that write good essays say partially
- 27:16agree
- 27:18um
- 27:18yes I partially agree I think would be
- 27:22um the way to go because you will be
- 27:24presenting both views but if you
- 27:27definitely said to saying agree or said
- 27:29to saying disagree this is all right too
- 27:32you can do that as well just as long as
- 27:33you can justify it
- 27:36don't explicitly say I agree or I
- 27:40disagree what you should do instead is
- 27:43so how you feel
- 27:45by using the text to highlight your
- 27:48opinion and I'll show you what I mean
- 27:51um in a second when we will be doing
- 27:52examples but what I'm talking about is
- 27:56don't say I agree with this prompt
- 27:58instead you should say blah blah blah
- 28:01these symbols are used
- 28:03um to show us this and this so use your
- 28:06contention as an umbrella from with your
- 28:09body paragraphs will fall under so your
- 28:11contention
- 28:12will be
- 28:14um one sentence and then your three
- 28:17topic sentences so your three arguments
- 28:20will flow after this
- 28:25step two is to come up with your
- 28:27arguments so what points are you going
- 28:30to make in your body paragraphs you need
- 28:31to think of that well you're planning
- 28:33your essay and before you go in to
- 28:36actually write it because if you're
- 28:38thinking of it while you're writing it
- 28:40chances I will take you much longer
- 28:43um so settle on your points and write
- 28:45your topic sentences
- 28:48um which should outline the content that
- 28:51you will be presented
- 28:53um and a good topic sentence to detail
- 28:56an idea that can be drawn from your
- 28:58contention so if they cannot
- 29:01um connect to your contention
- 29:04it's probably not a very good topic
- 29:07sentence so everything needs to
- 29:09interconnect
- 29:10so what you should not do is don't Focus
- 29:14solely on one character
- 29:17um except for cognitive based prompts
- 29:19but then again you will need to talk
- 29:21about more things what you should do
- 29:24instead is focus on the context on
- 29:27themes symbols and conventions so
- 29:29everything in the text everything and
- 29:31then through your topic sentence is
- 29:33clearly indicate what you will be
- 29:35discussing in a paragraph this helps
- 29:38your essay and it gives you better flow
- 29:40as well
- 29:42step three to building a contention is
- 29:46adhering to your prompt
- 29:48so the key to adhering to your prompt
- 29:52and be careful
- 29:54um in this sentence forming a
- 29:57relationship between the material given
- 29:59to you so prompt your adopted contention
- 30:02your point of view and the topic
- 30:04sentences which headline your evidence
- 30:06and justification so these three prompt
- 30:10contention and topic sentences
- 30:12interconnect think about it that way
- 30:16your prompt is the Avenue through which
- 30:20you form your stance your contention is
- 30:23the basis of your entire essay so it's
- 30:27it shows us what will be in your essay
- 30:31is it a yes is it a no do you agree do
- 30:34you disagree and your topic sentences
- 30:36are opening statements written with the
- 30:40purpose of helping you develop a
- 30:41discussion and also helping um the
- 30:45examiners or the reader you know
- 30:47understand what's going to be in the
- 30:48paragraph
- 30:51all right awesome so any questions you
- 30:54might have about contention
- 30:57um and adhering to your prompt Etc go in
- 31:01here and
- 31:03um you can put them in maintain we'll be
- 31:06answering them before we go into our
- 31:09break later on
- 31:11all right which leads us to section 1.2
- 31:14and I think
- 31:16um everything was building towards this
- 31:18and this is very very important so
- 31:22um what we talked about so far was sort
- 31:24of like leading into
- 31:26um your essay and this will be your
- 31:28essay
- 31:29so we will talk about paragraph
- 31:31structure and breakdown of sample text
- 31:36thank you
- 31:38all right so we saw what we need to do
- 31:40to answer our prompts we saw the vcaa
- 31:43key criteria for your um essay and now
- 31:47let's see how to write your ads your
- 31:49essay
- 31:50so as every essay what you need to
- 31:54include is an introduction it leads
- 31:56three body paragraphs and your
- 31:58conclusion
- 31:59let's have a look at what should be
- 32:01included in your introduction you need
- 32:04to have a brief mention of the setting
- 32:07of the text
- 32:09this can be just mentioning the name of
- 32:11the text and the author or depending on
- 32:13how relevant it is to the topic so if
- 32:15it's asking you
- 32:17talk about what this means
- 32:19um to the people in that era you might
- 32:22need to stay more but repent depending
- 32:25on how relevant it is some background
- 32:27information as well
- 32:29um you need to reward the topic so
- 32:33speak about the prompt a little bit what
- 32:35is it asking you and how is it relevant
- 32:37to the text you're discussing but not
- 32:39directly answering this question so more
- 32:42through a discussion and then of course
- 32:45your contention do you agree or disagree
- 32:47and you three main points or your three
- 32:50arguments supporting or disproving the
- 32:53prompt so why do you think that what you
- 32:56think so why is this your contention you
- 32:58need to answer that in your three main
- 33:00points
- 33:02let's have a look of a sample
- 33:05introduction and let's break it down a
- 33:07little bit and see how this has been
- 33:09been done well here
- 33:11so discuss the role of poetry and music
- 33:15in the lives of the characters in The
- 33:18Golden Age
- 33:20if you haven't read the text that's
- 33:23completely fine because you'll be able
- 33:24to understand through um
- 33:27just where everything needs to go so set
- 33:31in the time during the outbreak of the
- 33:33polio and World War II John London's
- 33:36historical and coming of AIDS novel The
- 33:39Golden Age so you see the brief mention
- 33:41of topic here and over here it is
- 33:44relevant that I have talked about the
- 33:47time it's been set because they might
- 33:51want to speak about poetry music during
- 33:53that time and they want us to know that
- 33:55you know it was
- 33:57um it was it's set then
- 34:00explore the significant role of poetry
- 34:03and music in assisting characters this
- 34:05is rewarding the topic
- 34:08um and then the contention is basically
- 34:12everything after this because it says
- 34:15discuss the role of it so
- 34:18um it's it's pleasure it plays a
- 34:20significant role to overcome the
- 34:22traumatized memories of the past and
- 34:24discover new fulfillment in life
- 34:27this is the contention and the main
- 34:31points together because in the prompts
- 34:33that asks us to discuss something
- 34:36um that in the not asking us if we agree
- 34:39or if we disagree that's how we can see
- 34:41all of them London suggests that the
- 34:44importance of poetry is explored through
- 34:46the characters lenses in a way to help
- 34:49them cope with stress and overcome the
- 34:51tragic past so you can see here another
- 34:53main point that they will discuss and
- 34:57moreover London illustrates that music
- 35:00acts as a catalyst to help characters
- 35:03regain a sense of belonging so all of
- 35:05this will be further explored in the
- 35:07body paragraphs again if you have any
- 35:09questions
- 35:11um let me know
- 35:15look at what's included in your body
- 35:18paragraph now of course you have your
- 35:20topic sentence which is one of your
- 35:22arguments and then you have the evidence
- 35:25so you have your argument and why do you
- 35:29argue this why do you think this and
- 35:31elaborating on that so discussing it
- 35:34more and going into
- 35:36um further discussion about this and
- 35:38linking back to the topic
- 35:42so the link back to the topic will be
- 35:48what will be what will he be keeping
- 35:51your paragraphs and your contention and
- 35:55your prompt all connected throughout the
- 35:58essay
- 35:59um and I think there has been a slight
- 36:01mistake here and this is saying the same
- 36:04as the introduction but we can change
- 36:06that um and have the updated app
- 36:12um all right awesome so let's have a
- 36:14look at this body paragraph here and
- 36:19how and where in the paragraph we can
- 36:22see everything we just talked about
- 36:24so the music is depicted as an
- 36:28indispensable tool in finding a sense of
- 36:31belonging when there is no music
- 36:33character isn't able to feel or hope
- 36:36so we can say the argument here and
- 36:39let's see which argument is this hope
- 36:42and
- 36:45um yeah this one music
- 36:48um hope and sense of belonging so
- 36:50arriving in Australia as a war Refugee
- 36:53he does hatred and bitterness towards
- 36:56it's foreign land is revealed in her
- 36:59assertion that there is no place for a
- 37:02serious musician in Perth so we can see
- 37:04all the evidence so the recalling things
- 37:06that happened and quotes So this is
- 37:08where you should put your quotes and you
- 37:12can do that and the way to do this is to
- 37:15incorporate them in your sentences
- 37:16rather than saying this was said here
- 37:19and because this was said it so does
- 37:22blah blah blah so incorporate them for
- 37:24example memories of her stunning
- 37:27performance at the Academy and the past
- 37:29recognition of her Talent con
- 37:33um either in making her increasingly
- 37:35cynical and unforgiving like a bird who
- 37:38refused to sing
- 37:39so
- 37:40after this we will have a discussion of
- 37:44evidence and elaboration so however blah
- 37:49blah blah I'm not going to read this
- 37:50whole thing because some of you guys
- 37:52might not have read the text so in what
- 37:54makes sense but I just want to show you
- 37:56where everything goes and as you can see
- 37:58they're coming back to some evidence
- 38:00over here elaboration and more evidence
- 38:03and elaboration and at the end linking
- 38:05back to the topic sorry thereby London
- 38:08reveals a significant role music plays
- 38:11in building connection of the war
- 38:13victims and the land they migrate to
- 38:18um so
- 38:20let me also just say that this essay
- 38:26um was a vcaa high scoring response so
- 38:30that's why it's been put here for you
- 38:31guys to um get as an example and also
- 38:35just um to talk about this as well
- 38:38please know that for eal
- 38:41um you might see some minor grammatical
- 38:44errors and mistakes and the examiners
- 38:46don't really go crazy over them as they
- 38:48would do for English so for example we
- 38:51can see here the music or character is
- 38:54unable so it's really common for this to
- 38:59happen and still this is considered a
- 39:02high scoring response so if this was one
- 39:04of your questions or something you had
- 39:06in mind know that it's not the end of
- 39:09the world if you're not the best at
- 39:10grammar or not the best at vocabulary
- 39:13just
- 39:15try your best
- 39:18um and yeah try your best and the
- 39:21examiners are not so harsh on us a lot
- 39:25and then you have your conclusion so
- 39:27what should be included in your
- 39:30conclusion we have restating your
- 39:32contention and summarizing and
- 39:34paraphrasing your main points so
- 39:36ultimately London in the Golden Age
- 39:38explores the important role poetry and
- 39:42music plays in assisting characters do
- 39:44not only overcome the past tragic
- 39:46memories but also develop different
- 39:48perspectives of the death of the world
- 39:50of the death and the world from the
- 39:54portrayal of art London admires the role
- 39:56of poetry and music in the lives of
- 39:58characters where they help or he helps
- 40:01them discover new fulfillment in life
- 40:04so paraphrasing the main point so what
- 40:08was it that you stated before restating
- 40:11contention and just paraphrasing it a
- 40:14little bit so you don't say the same
- 40:16thing twice say it but a little bit
- 40:19differently
- 40:21um and this leads us to section 1.3 and
- 40:25the end of text response which is
- 40:28Thimble symbol themes symbols and motifs
- 40:31which is very important for your
- 40:34discussion in the text as well and what
- 40:37we're going to do is we're going to say
- 40:39what they are and how you can
- 40:40incorporate them in your paragraphs
- 40:43okay first things first what is a theme
- 40:47a theme is an idea that arises
- 40:51from the key elements in the text so
- 40:53it's implied it's not explicitly said
- 40:56for example a very very common one
- 41:00um is love for instance so the author
- 41:04won't say love is relevant in this and
- 41:08the couple loves each other very much
- 41:10they will show it to you remember this
- 41:13implied ideas in the text all right now
- 41:16what I want you to do is jump back into
- 41:18mentimira actually just leave it open in
- 41:20your computers
- 41:22um and let's have a look I have a word
- 41:25cloud for us here I want you to tell me
- 41:29which ones are some very common themes
- 41:33in movies that you can think of
- 41:40let's see if this is the right one
- 41:45okay we had one more left in this
- 41:48activity what kind of prompt is this
- 41:52um
- 41:53although Frank is gonna find a hospital
- 41:55his world expands in many ways discuss
- 42:00um if anyone is in you can answer it if
- 42:02you want it's a character based prompt
- 42:05correct why isn't is it not a
- 42:09quote-based prompt guys because it's
- 42:13talking about a character
- 42:17and
- 42:18it's it's an idea so it's not so the the
- 42:23sentence although Frank is confined to a
- 42:26hospital his world expands in many ways
- 42:29it's it's not an actual quote it's an
- 42:33idea
- 42:34um and it's asking you to discuss this
- 42:36and it's a character-based one because
- 42:38it's talking about Frank and not a metal
- 42:41language one because
- 42:44it's not asking you how does this person
- 42:49is
- 42:51Etc
- 42:54all right
- 42:56um I'm just
- 42:57going to go
- 43:00um
- 43:01invented to bring up the correct
- 43:04question and I'm so sorry about this
- 43:07guys just give me one second
- 43:19foreign
- 43:22I got it
- 43:24so
- 43:27um this will be a word cloud and just
- 43:29let me know what you think so I gave one
- 43:31away and I said love
- 43:34um let's discuss what other themes are
- 43:37um very common in movies and come up a
- 43:41lot and this can be movies and texts as
- 43:43well
- 43:44so there are no wrong answers here
- 43:47anything
- 43:49um
- 43:50anything you say will be good
- 43:53does make sense and I don't know
- 43:56um if that means doesn't make sense what
- 43:59I mean is what are some common ideas in
- 44:02movies what are some common themes so
- 44:04things that will come up from
- 44:08um the text that are not explicitly said
- 44:11so fate and change very good nature yes
- 44:17what have we got family absolutely
- 44:20control abuse of power grief definitely
- 44:25um epic first is the common place that's
- 44:27a very good one
- 44:30um hope
- 44:31what else have we got
- 44:33death yep grief same power
- 44:38definitely let's see some more people
- 44:41answering so we have five people in here
- 44:43let me see more um answers here guys
- 44:48control yeah some very interesting ones
- 44:52you have in here love it
- 44:57please
- 44:58all right so I'll leave this open for
- 45:00you guys to have a go and I'll just go
- 45:04in here again and just continue
- 45:08so
- 45:09um yeah this is what we just did but in
- 45:12many meters in manometer so sometimes
- 45:16it's a bit hard to identify these
- 45:19implied ideas just because it's not
- 45:22um it's not something you have been
- 45:24trained to do so what are some things or
- 45:27some steps for you to take to make this
- 45:29process easier so first thing you need
- 45:32to do is look at the plot of course what
- 45:35are the main plot elements what's the
- 45:38setting what are the characters
- 45:40um and what's the most important moment
- 45:44or moments in the text if for example
- 45:46the most important moment is someone's
- 45:50marriage it might be that love is the
- 45:52theme if it's someone's
- 45:55um death it might be the grief and loss
- 45:58is the theme and how does the text end
- 46:00this is also very very important
- 46:03how is the central conflict resolved so
- 46:06everything is resolving is revolving
- 46:10around the central conflict so how is
- 46:12this resolved then you need to look at
- 46:14the protagonist so who is the main
- 46:16character and what happens to him or her
- 46:19and how do they develop as a person over
- 46:21the course of the story this will all
- 46:24lead you to the answer and look at
- 46:27prominent symbols and motifs and see
- 46:30what are they so if you have love hearts
- 46:34the thing is it might be love that um
- 46:38will be the theme of the text
- 46:41and why are themes so important because
- 46:45identifying them and And discussing them
- 46:49is subjective and personal which means
- 46:52that you are bringing your experience
- 46:55into interpretation of of them and this
- 46:58is what makes them so powerful so unique
- 47:01so it will mean different things and you
- 47:04will interpret them differently
- 47:06um than your classmates so this relates
- 47:10to that how the features of select text
- 47:13create meaning and how they influence
- 47:15interpretation
- 47:16so how do you interpret them versus
- 47:19someone else
- 47:22now how do we put a theme or use it or
- 47:25put it into a paragraph first thing you
- 47:27need to connect it to your prompt and
- 47:29then this is how you um you still use
- 47:33till for your paragraph So talk about
- 47:35the technique being used the theme
- 47:39the example of symbolism or the example
- 47:43of the theme for example love the effect
- 47:46of the theme on the audience emotion and
- 47:48then linking back to your argument
- 47:54um and this was things and our symbols
- 47:57with a very important for themes as well
- 48:00symbols are either material objects or
- 48:03sins or it can be events as well that
- 48:06represent something abstract so symbols
- 48:09represent themes
- 48:11so what other literary technique does
- 48:14this remind you of what is something
- 48:18that reminds you of something else now
- 48:20you can let me know in the chat
- 48:23um of this but this is meta language so
- 48:26it's a literally literary technique
- 48:29and symbols very much remind me of this
- 48:33so let me know if anyone else
- 48:35is thinking
- 48:37um the same thing if not that's
- 48:39definitely fine
- 48:40um but yeah I'm just curious so what's
- 48:43what does what literary technique does a
- 48:46symbol remind you of
- 48:50a metaphor yes absolutely
- 48:54um thank you so much liviru someone said
- 48:57that in the chat so it does remind you
- 49:00of a metaphor so a metaphor is something
- 49:03that reminds us of something else but
- 49:06um contrasts two things
- 49:09how are they similar well a metaphor
- 49:12explicitly Compares two things but
- 49:15symbolism requires the audience to look
- 49:18for it themselves they're similar in the
- 49:20way that they both point that direction
- 49:21but they're different in the way
- 49:24explicit and implicit
- 49:27um implicitly looking for something
- 49:30amazing thank you
- 49:33all right now how to identify and
- 49:36analyze symbols step one is with the
- 49:39passage this is sometimes the hardest
- 49:41thing and step two is identify any
- 49:44objects you see there are some
- 49:47well-known symbols like for example as I
- 49:50said over and over again Hearts
- 49:52represent love
- 49:53um the color red might represent love
- 49:56and passion we have eagles which is a
- 49:59very common symbol of freedom
- 50:02so consider the context of the symbol so
- 50:05as I said before red can represent love
- 50:07but it can also represent danger and
- 50:09like look out don't go in that room
- 50:13um that sort of thing so consider the
- 50:15context of the symbol and decide the
- 50:18most appropriate meaning of it and then
- 50:20discuss until
- 50:22if there are some symbols that are
- 50:25unconventional for example in the text I
- 50:29am Malala there are some symbols that
- 50:31represent her love for learning like you
- 50:36know a diary a notebook they're
- 50:37unconventional you don't see them very
- 50:39often so you need to see the
- 50:41characteristics of the object so what
- 50:43does it mean and what's the significance
- 50:45of the characteristics
- 50:48um what does it mean what context is it
- 50:52in like is it in school
- 50:54um it will help you identify where it
- 50:57belongs and decide on the most
- 50:59appropriate meaning and again discuss
- 51:01entail and the way to discussed until is
- 51:06the same as we said about themes again
- 51:10um
- 51:11it goes topic sentence so technique
- 51:15symbolism example of symbolism effect of
- 51:18symbolism on the audience and linking
- 51:20back to the topic and this so this
- 51:24doesn't have to be a paragraph itself it
- 51:26can be a little part inside a paragraph
- 51:28a biggest a bigger paragraph that we'll
- 51:31be talking about
- 51:33um something relevant to the symbolism
- 51:34you want to discuss
- 51:37please let me know if everything is
- 51:39making sense if not you can let me know
- 51:42in centimeter
- 51:44um if you have any questions but I'm
- 51:47really hoping this um is making sense
- 51:50all right so then we have motifs and
- 51:54this is one of the more Uncommon um
- 51:57techniques that are used in text so a
- 51:59motif is a repeated pattern it's
- 52:02something that is really caring
- 52:03throughout the text a recurring theme
- 52:06idea or message that is very dominant
- 52:10and basically reinforces your theme
- 52:13some examples of motif which I'm hoping
- 52:16this will help you
- 52:17um understanding better for example
- 52:19finding a Bible at the bus stop and then
- 52:23coming across efficient payment in an
- 52:25art gallery that looks just like them by
- 52:29that Bible
- 52:30so this is two different events that
- 52:33both point us towards the same thing for
- 52:37example to symbolize a call to God or to
- 52:40religion this is a point towards the
- 52:44same
- 52:45um theme but with different symbols so
- 52:49it's a recurring theme it's a motif
- 52:52hearing the phrase some things in life
- 52:55never change repeating repeated
- 52:57throughout the story
- 52:59to push a character to make a change to
- 53:02um so as the change is a theme this is
- 53:06also repeated so it's a motif and then
- 53:09hearing the sound of a dog collar once
- 53:11twice maybe three times throughout the
- 53:14story to emphasize the character's
- 53:17sorrow over the loss of a faithful
- 53:19companion which can be a dog
- 53:22so motifs can be the same thing again
- 53:25and again or it can be different things
- 53:27again and again that point of the same
- 53:29thing
- 53:31um this is what differentiate
- 53:33differentiates them with like with
- 53:36symbols so a symbol will come up once
- 53:39um and it will be one thing like the
- 53:43same thing like a hat it cannot be
- 53:46different things that's emotive
- 53:50so let's see the symbol summarized a
- 53:52theme is something abstract and
- 53:54something that we chose uh you'll see a
- 53:59lot of movies that point with them a
- 54:01motive can be a concrete or abstract and
- 54:04it recurs and symbols
- 54:08um are something concrete so it's
- 54:10something tangible that you'll be able
- 54:12to see that appear once or only a few
- 54:15times in a text and that's how you
- 54:18differentiate these
- 54:20all right awesome now
- 54:24um
- 54:25before we go into our break
- 54:33see a quick video and just move around a
- 54:38little bit to be ready when we come back
- 54:40to
- 54:42do some um language analysis which I
- 54:46also love
- 54:47all right awesome just waiting for this
- 54:50one to load
- 55:24can you hear very well guys
- 55:29um let's give me a thumbs up in the chat
- 55:30if you can I think I lost you for a
- 55:32second
- 55:37all right awesome
- 55:39um okay going into our break let's have
- 55:42a look at
- 55:45this video from our UBS volunteer
- 55:49Ophelia who will give us one advice for
- 55:52VC
- 55:56super advice so we definitely give
- 55:58someone who is in year 12 studying their
- 56:00final exams would be to try hard I think
- 56:04I've heard a lot of rhetoric in the past
- 56:05couple of years where people are saying
- 56:07that oh you know it's not the end of the
- 56:09world it doesn't really matter what
- 56:10score you get and they're right in
- 56:12saying that it's not the end of the
- 56:13world but I think anyone would really
- 56:15regret not trying hard to begin with so
- 56:19just apply yourself don't leave things
- 56:20to the last minute and I think I said
- 56:22before I just do a lot of practice exams
- 56:25that's really helpful
- 56:27absolutely
- 56:29um
- 56:29well said to Ophelia all right let's
- 56:33jump into our break and let everyone be
- 56:38back at
- 56:40309
- 56:43um actually 308 to watch a little video
- 56:46when we come back as well and we will be
- 56:49going through language analysis so stay
- 56:51tuned go grab some water move around a
- 56:55little bit just to be ready and
- 56:56energized for the next session
- 57:00um the next section of our presentation
- 57:02all right
- 57:04um I'll see you back at 309
- 57:09yes
- 57:39all right all right let's start coming
- 57:42back welcome back everyone
- 57:44um while we're waiting for 309 I'm just
- 57:48gonna play our next video for today
- 57:55hey guys my name is alaskia and I'm one
- 57:58of the math students at Skyline hat so
- 58:01this revision series I'll be taking
- 58:02specially for so we're going through all
- 58:04of the main like topics on the side
- 58:06design for Splash including like
- 58:08probability calculus vectors Etc
- 58:11so we'll go through all of the content
- 58:13as well as a bunch of exam questions
- 58:15um and like exam tips
- 58:17um and strategies to get you guys
- 58:18through the exam
- 58:24all right so this is about
- 58:26um future master classes I think this
- 58:29one is on tomorrow
- 58:32yeah tomorrow ten to one so if you're
- 58:34doing specialist maths you'll be with
- 58:37saskia
- 58:39um amazing so let's jump into the rest
- 58:44of our session so we have section two
- 58:48which is language analysis
- 58:51um and the first thing we'll look at is
- 58:56two point um one or just two which is
- 59:00again the expected qualities so we have
- 59:02a sophisticated we need someone to show
- 59:05a sophisticated understanding of a rage
- 59:07a range of ways in which written and
- 59:10visual language and the use of argument
- 59:12position
- 59:14um readers in the context presented so
- 59:17basically you you just need to talk
- 59:19about
- 59:21um
- 59:22all your persuasive techniques
- 59:25um these will visuals that are used
- 59:29um and how does this position the reader
- 59:32to think feel act Etc
- 59:36um and you need to develop a detailed
- 59:39and well substantiated analysis using
- 59:42fluent precise and effective language
- 59:44and expression so
- 59:47let's see what the things you can do are
- 59:50that will differentiate you from the
- 59:53rest of your cohort and you will get a
- 59:55high scoring response
- 59:58so this is the vcaa task description
- 1:00:02analyze and compare the use of argument
- 1:00:05and persuasive language in texts the
- 1:00:08present a point of view on a list you
- 1:00:10currently debated in the media text must
- 1:00:13include written and visual material so
- 1:00:16analyze so analysis it's not summarizing
- 1:00:19and not describing or evaluating or
- 1:00:22paraphrasing it's analyzing and
- 1:00:25comparing considering similarities and
- 1:00:28differences between texts because you
- 1:00:30will be given two texts in your end of
- 1:00:33year exam so compare what they say how
- 1:00:36they say it who the authors are and what
- 1:00:38their experiences and values might be
- 1:00:41the use of argument argument is a claim
- 1:00:45or a premise
- 1:00:47so what the author is saying
- 1:00:51um if it's supported by evidence
- 1:00:54um how is it presented so talking about
- 1:00:57persuasive language
- 1:00:59um what kind of devices are being used
- 1:01:02and what kind of strategies are being
- 1:01:04used and what do these make the audience
- 1:01:09feel how do they position the audience
- 1:01:11again
- 1:01:13um
- 1:01:13and texts what are they basically
- 1:01:17um is it an editorial is it a cartoon
- 1:01:20the second text can be catching
- 1:01:22sometimes and written and visual you
- 1:01:25must work with both images symbols
- 1:01:28layout as well as written language
- 1:01:33so everything need to be discussed
- 1:01:36some things to think about during
- 1:01:38reading time so in your reading time you
- 1:01:42won't be able to do your plan because
- 1:01:44you won't be able to write and also you
- 1:01:46won't have enough time so when you're
- 1:01:48reading the text
- 1:01:52um
- 1:01:52what you can do is
- 1:01:56look at how does this issue affect the
- 1:01:59individual the local community The Wider
- 1:02:03Society the nation Global Community
- 1:02:05Future Past generations and basically
- 1:02:09everything people places other living
- 1:02:12entities
- 1:02:16um I have been told that my video is
- 1:02:20lacking a little bit so I'm just gonna
- 1:02:21try and turn my camera off just for a
- 1:02:24second
- 1:02:25um and then I'll turn it back on but
- 1:02:27I'll still keep
- 1:02:29um
- 1:02:30continuing with the presentation
- 1:02:34but I'm glad you can all hear me okay
- 1:02:36which is
- 1:02:38um the most important thing
- 1:02:42so how does the issue affect everyone
- 1:02:47um also now talking about paragraph
- 1:02:49structure and breakdown of sample text
- 1:02:53and as I said before in text response
- 1:02:55this helps a lot
- 1:02:59so what should be included in your
- 1:03:03introduction again
- 1:03:05in your language analysis introduction
- 1:03:07you need to talk about the type of text
- 1:03:10that the text you're analyzing is so
- 1:03:14um is it a newspaper article is it an
- 1:03:17editorial a letter to the editor what
- 1:03:19kind of text is it
- 1:03:22and what's the issue so what has been
- 1:03:26going on that brought about this this um
- 1:03:29this discussion so what's the problem
- 1:03:32why is the writer writing the space so
- 1:03:34something that happened that triggered
- 1:03:35it
- 1:03:36The Writer's contention what is the
- 1:03:38writer arguing for
- 1:03:40the audience so who is the text
- 1:03:43targeting potential audiences can be
- 1:03:46students parents
- 1:03:48um politicians it's generally groups
- 1:03:50it's not really like all Australians
- 1:03:54it's just specific groups and a brief
- 1:03:56mention of a couple of techniques that
- 1:03:58they use so how is the author actually
- 1:04:00achieving the contention
- 1:04:04let's have a look at a sample
- 1:04:07introduction and you need the background
- 1:04:09information to understand this so it's a
- 1:04:12cinema in the original town of topdale
- 1:04:14is struggling to attract customers and
- 1:04:17is at risk of closing down to ask for
- 1:04:20support Ava the cinemas marketing
- 1:04:22manager has written a social media post
- 1:04:25on the top Bill Community Voice page
- 1:04:27members are residents of topdale in the
- 1:04:30surrounding area so just by reading it
- 1:04:32at the background info you know your
- 1:04:35audience residents of topdale and
- 1:04:37surrounding areas
- 1:04:39so the growing popularity of streaming
- 1:04:42services this is the issue and the
- 1:04:45debate as well has sparked the issue of
- 1:04:47whether or not traditional Cinemas
- 1:04:49should be supported to remain open
- 1:04:52so you can see here issue and debate
- 1:04:54both in the same sentence the first one
- 1:04:57Ava the cinemas marketing manager has
- 1:05:00published a social media Post in the
- 1:05:02topdail community page and this is the
- 1:05:04type of text we have targeting residents
- 1:05:07of topdale in the surrounding area the
- 1:05:10audience
- 1:05:11Ava contends at Cinemas the cinema
- 1:05:14should be supported to stay in business
- 1:05:16this is the contention due to its
- 1:05:18importance in the community Ava's Stone
- 1:05:22sifts from being passionate to becoming
- 1:05:24more urgent and critical towards the end
- 1:05:27of her post also mentioning the tone did
- 1:05:30I mention this year
- 1:05:32no okay yeah
- 1:05:35um you also can and it would be good to
- 1:05:38mention the town in Asia the two photos
- 1:05:41which accompany the posts some Ford
- 1:05:43ever's argument so this is a brief
- 1:05:46mention of the techniques as well two
- 1:05:48photos so visual techniques
- 1:05:53um all right awesome so this was the
- 1:05:55introduction
- 1:05:56um and it's a very high scoring
- 1:05:58introduction and I so what I have been
- 1:06:01doing I had been doing when I was in BC
- 1:06:04I used to get all the high scoring
- 1:06:06responses
- 1:06:07and just try to follow the same
- 1:06:11structure and format just so that I know
- 1:06:14that I have included everything I need
- 1:06:16and I I will definitely know that it's a
- 1:06:20high scoring response because it's on
- 1:06:23the
- 1:06:24um
- 1:06:25the same structure as the highest
- 1:06:27scoring responses from BCAA
- 1:06:31all right now what's it included in your
- 1:06:33body paragraphs again you have
- 1:06:36um one of the arguments that the authors
- 1:06:39will make so authors will make lots of
- 1:06:41them you just need to choose three of
- 1:06:43them to make them your topic sentences
- 1:06:46um the persuasive techniques with
- 1:06:48evidence which is like what are they
- 1:06:51using they use metaphors they're using
- 1:06:54um inclusive language Etc so to support
- 1:06:58these arguments the authors will use a
- 1:07:00range of persuasive techniques just to
- 1:07:03make the audience believe them so they
- 1:07:05will have this effect
- 1:07:08um on the audience and identify three of
- 1:07:11these and analyze their use
- 1:07:14for each one of the arguments I would
- 1:07:18recommend analyzing three of three
- 1:07:20persuasive techniques and don't worry
- 1:07:22there will be plenty
- 1:07:25and then you will talk about the effect
- 1:07:27of the audience so what are these
- 1:07:29techniques directed to do are these
- 1:07:32directed to
- 1:07:34um make me feel a certain way for
- 1:07:36example in motive language will be
- 1:07:39directed to make you feel let's say sad
- 1:07:42or happy or a special emotion and how
- 1:07:45does this help the author's contention
- 1:07:47so how do these techniques relate to the
- 1:07:50author's argument and overall contention
- 1:07:53so in motive language will make me feel
- 1:07:57um like I said in a way for example sad
- 1:08:00and that way I will help the author do
- 1:08:03whatever they're trying to do
- 1:08:06let's have a look at this sample body
- 1:08:10paragraph
- 1:08:11so we have the argument at the top ever
- 1:08:14insinuates that local residents should
- 1:08:16support topdale Cinema since it has
- 1:08:19important historic values
- 1:08:22using a passionate tone she appeals to
- 1:08:25the reader's Community spirit so we can
- 1:08:27see here the persuasive technique and
- 1:08:29her tone what she's using through the
- 1:08:31metaphor again another persuasive
- 1:08:33technique the top tale Cinema was the
- 1:08:36social heart of town and here we have
- 1:08:38the evidence hence the readers are
- 1:08:41positioned to feel lost if the cinema is
- 1:08:43closed down because of its historic role
- 1:08:46in the community here we have the effect
- 1:08:48on the audience see how smartly they do
- 1:08:50this in addition through the use of
- 1:08:53emotive negative connoted words again
- 1:08:56persuasive techniques biggest threat and
- 1:08:58victim of stream Revolution
- 1:09:00Ava also appeals to the reader's
- 1:09:03conservative values in stealing a sense
- 1:09:05of fear and insecurity of the potential
- 1:09:08loss of the cinema in here we see the
- 1:09:11effect it has a photo depicting topdail
- 1:09:14Cinemas front with Victorian style
- 1:09:16architecture distinctive features of
- 1:09:18Lars white door and white tiles again
- 1:09:22this is the evidence when you're using
- 1:09:23visual analysis further accentuates her
- 1:09:27claim on the historic value of the
- 1:09:29cinema local residents who love history
- 1:09:32will feel urged to go and watch a movie
- 1:09:35in this traditional Cinema
- 1:09:37so this is what we'll do they will love
- 1:09:40to go and watch it so therefore she
- 1:09:44states that start Health Cinema should
- 1:09:46be supported to stay open due to its
- 1:09:48historical significance and this is how
- 1:09:50it helps her contention so and it links
- 1:09:53back also to the topic so this links
- 1:09:57with this
- 1:10:00um I'm just gonna try and turn my camera
- 1:10:03on and tell me if I am still lagging
- 1:10:08um so we saw a house foreign response
- 1:10:11let's have a look at a low or mid
- 1:10:13scoring body paragraph Just so you can
- 1:10:16identify what you shouldn't do
- 1:10:18so
- 1:10:20this well this body paragraph and I'll
- 1:10:22read a little bit of it I want to read a
- 1:10:24little bit I don't want to bore you so
- 1:10:26David begins her article with the banner
- 1:10:29for the challenge young people see this
- 1:10:32image and want to participate because
- 1:10:34poster Cuts their attention she then
- 1:10:36states that climate change is a serious
- 1:10:39issue it describes it's a threat which
- 1:10:41makes the readers feel worried because a
- 1:10:44threat is scary so
- 1:10:46by reading the um one before we could
- 1:10:51tell we would sort of tell of the issue
- 1:10:53just by reading at the word paragraph we
- 1:10:56didn't really need the background info
- 1:10:57but here we don't understand what's
- 1:10:59going on when we read the first four
- 1:11:01sentences so there's not really a clear
- 1:11:03argument and there's a lack of clear
- 1:11:06quotes and explanations so there is no
- 1:11:10flow in this paragraph and the visual is
- 1:11:13not analyzed it's simply described
- 1:11:16um the poster and there's also poor
- 1:11:19paragraph structure so they're jumping
- 1:11:22from one issue to another
- 1:11:25um and it's not very good
- 1:11:27for the reader because we are lost in
- 1:11:30here and the examiner won't bother
- 1:11:32reading reading this like three times to
- 1:11:35understand
- 1:11:36um so that's why it's not a good
- 1:11:39paragraph
- 1:11:40so yours look like this
- 1:11:43and less like this
- 1:11:46um all right awesome and now let's have
- 1:11:48a look at the conclusion so what should
- 1:11:50be included in your conclusion
- 1:11:52now
- 1:11:53did you know that it's actually okay not
- 1:11:56to include a conclusion on your language
- 1:11:59analysis because in your actual exam
- 1:12:02when you have the two texts
- 1:12:06the last paragraph can be dedicated to
- 1:12:10the second text instead of having a
- 1:12:12conclusion now however if you're
- 1:12:14analyzing a single text your conclusion
- 1:12:16should be very brief and mentioning the
- 1:12:19main takeaway now having said that you
- 1:12:22don't absolutely need a conclusion I
- 1:12:25still do recommend including one but I
- 1:12:27know sometimes people are short for time
- 1:12:30so if you need to rush through something
- 1:12:32you can skip this one
- 1:12:35um
- 1:12:36but if you do have time still do it
- 1:12:38because I think it's um just a good
- 1:12:42consolidation of what have been said in
- 1:12:44the essay so let's have a look at this
- 1:12:47one
- 1:12:48um if you're using a single text the
- 1:12:50conclusion should be brief
- 1:12:54so Ava
- 1:12:56um I'm just gonna keep my camera off
- 1:12:58because I know I'm lagging again guys
- 1:13:00Eva says that topdail Cinema should be
- 1:13:04supported to stay in business due to its
- 1:13:06importance on top tail community and
- 1:13:09history
- 1:13:10through a passionate and Urgent tone
- 1:13:12ever targets stop their local residents
- 1:13:14prompting to watch the cinema more often
- 1:13:17to save it from closing down so this is
- 1:13:19exactly what has been said in the essay
- 1:13:21as well and it's just the main takeaway
- 1:13:24very brief as you can see it's only two
- 1:13:26sentences
- 1:13:27so don't go crazy over your conclusion
- 1:13:31now let's have a look at do's and don'ts
- 1:13:34for language analysis and this one is
- 1:13:37also very very helpful so don't make
- 1:13:40your language analysis a persuasive
- 1:13:42technique Bingo list for example in her
- 1:13:46opinion piece Bonnie Norton uses
- 1:13:49personal anecdotes attacks loaded
- 1:13:52language blah blah blah to do this and
- 1:13:54this
- 1:13:55so you don't want to just identify it
- 1:13:58instead you must identify the argument
- 1:14:01and the persuasive techniques are there
- 1:14:05to help the writer achieve like his
- 1:14:09point and you need to talk about that
- 1:14:11instead of just
- 1:14:13identifying them so Norton seeks to
- 1:14:16overturn the perception that pitbulls
- 1:14:19are a dangerous spread of dog so this is
- 1:14:22the argument here this is what should be
- 1:14:24identifying and then
- 1:14:26drawing on a very personal anecdote blah
- 1:14:29blah blah and then you begin to identify
- 1:14:31the persuasive techniques and talking
- 1:14:33about what they mean for the audience
- 1:14:35you should not lead into it using your
- 1:14:38persuasive techniques
- 1:14:40next don't summarize like you can say
- 1:14:44here Northern argues that people should
- 1:14:46not be banned she claims that they are
- 1:14:48friendly companions blah blah blah so
- 1:14:50they say exactly what has been said by
- 1:14:54the author and we don't want to buy the
- 1:14:57writer and we don't want to do that we
- 1:14:59don't we want to talk about the intended
- 1:15:02effect so for example
- 1:15:04having established that the issue of dog
- 1:15:07bites in community is not merely
- 1:15:10restricted to pit bull breeds and thus
- 1:15:12having made an attempt to quell the
- 1:15:14anxieties of fearful readers so you can
- 1:15:17see here they identify what they what
- 1:15:21the writer did but also talked about why
- 1:15:24they did it they did it because they
- 1:15:26attempted to quell the anxieties of
- 1:15:28fearful readers and then if you'll be
- 1:15:32provided with slide so you can go
- 1:15:33through and read everything if you want
- 1:15:35to
- 1:15:36um but that's the do and don't here
- 1:15:40another one as as Bud as mean or as
- 1:15:47um upsetting what you read might be for
- 1:15:50you don't get involved so don't say
- 1:15:52clearly pitbulls should not be banned
- 1:15:55and the author doesn't know what she's
- 1:15:57talking about
- 1:15:58no so you need to focus on the author's
- 1:16:02contention rather than getting involved
- 1:16:04and saying what you think what you feel
- 1:16:06about the issue so Northern is clearly
- 1:16:09opposed to the proposed ban on paid Bull
- 1:16:12Terriers and seeks to highlight to those
- 1:16:14who do not know much about this breed
- 1:16:17they can indeed be loyal and faithful
- 1:16:20companions
- 1:16:22so talking about the author's convention
- 1:16:29um all right awesome
- 1:16:30so again if you have any questions on
- 1:16:33everything we just said go into
- 1:16:36www.menti.com and use the code 3556.469
- 1:16:42um this sounds like an advertisement but
- 1:16:44it's not I swear
- 1:16:46um to ask any questions you might have
- 1:16:49all right and jumping into section 2.2
- 1:16:52which we will be talking about
- 1:16:53persuasive techniques so what we will do
- 1:16:57here is we will briefly go through some
- 1:17:00and then we'll do a quick quiz with a
- 1:17:03couple of techniques to see
- 1:17:05um how much you learned from this today
- 1:17:09so techniques to make the audience feel
- 1:17:12something about the message or else
- 1:17:14emotive techniques are all of the below
- 1:17:18that you can see here and we'll have a
- 1:17:20look into them and also the examples as
- 1:17:22well
- 1:17:23so the first one is an appeal of the
- 1:17:25fear all the appeals here so appeal to
- 1:17:28fear for example smoking kills in many
- 1:17:31ways quit smoking now this is an appeal
- 1:17:34to fear because it's
- 1:17:36it it wants you to stop the author wants
- 1:17:39you to stop smoking so they're saying
- 1:17:41that it kills and of course you are
- 1:17:44scared of death so they're appealing to
- 1:17:47your fear appealing to Greed is also
- 1:17:50another technique so taxpayers are
- 1:17:53basically donating giving money out of
- 1:17:56the pockets for the infrastructure of
- 1:17:58roads that never actually happens so
- 1:18:02appealing to your green they're saying
- 1:18:04that they're giving money out of your
- 1:18:07pockets like you as a taxpayer are
- 1:18:10basically donating money and the roads
- 1:18:13never actually happen to you wasting
- 1:18:14them so appealing to someone's grade and
- 1:18:16this can be also called appeal to a Hip
- 1:18:20Pocket nerve or to financial
- 1:18:23um
- 1:18:24like interest
- 1:18:26the other one is an appealth of furnace
- 1:18:29so it's not fair to assume that I will
- 1:18:32be a poor driver based on my age alone
- 1:18:34so this is talking about like ageism and
- 1:18:38how it's fair or not fair so it's an
- 1:18:41ability to fairness
- 1:18:43next we have a motive language
- 1:18:45so in motive language is basically using
- 1:18:49very very strong language that if it
- 1:18:53wasn't in this sentence the sentence
- 1:18:56wouldn't mean the same things for
- 1:18:58example the innocent girl was sentenced
- 1:19:00to two years of jail by the biased court
- 1:19:03so if the sentence said the girl will
- 1:19:06send us to two years of jail by the
- 1:19:08court
- 1:19:09it would mean that you have no opinion
- 1:19:12it like okay the girl was sentenced in
- 1:19:14two years okay but when you say the
- 1:19:16innocent girl was sentenced by the bias
- 1:19:18court it's it's in modern language it
- 1:19:21makes us feel it's unfair like why is
- 1:19:24the innocent if she's innocent why is it
- 1:19:27is she sentenced and then we have
- 1:19:30inclusive language which makes it makes
- 1:19:32us feel like we belong to a group so for
- 1:19:35example the decision of the next prime
- 1:19:37minister is up to us all Australians
- 1:19:42um
- 1:19:43so
- 1:19:44Australians like this is an inclusive
- 1:19:47language it makes you feel like you
- 1:19:49belong to this group that's Australia
- 1:19:51and you have a say in the next prime
- 1:19:54minister
- 1:19:56next up we have rhetorical devices which
- 1:20:00are techniques to emphasize a message so
- 1:20:03rhetorical devices are basically like
- 1:20:06repetitions similarly exaggeration are
- 1:20:09things that
- 1:20:11you do over and over again so for
- 1:20:14instance Time After Time After Time I
- 1:20:17have watched this same thing happen
- 1:20:21um what this does what this repetition
- 1:20:23does is just plant something into your
- 1:20:26brain and it also makes you think that
- 1:20:29okay saying that Time After Time After
- 1:20:31Time you know the author is like tired
- 1:20:35of it so it's been done so many times
- 1:20:40and then we have simile so life is like
- 1:20:43a box of chocolates so simile basically
- 1:20:46compares to things
- 1:20:48and then exaggeration I'm so hungry I
- 1:20:51could eat a horse well we know that they
- 1:20:55definitely couldn't eat a horse but it's
- 1:20:57an exaggeration
- 1:21:01then we have logic techniques so this
- 1:21:04basically just
- 1:21:07makes the audience feel like all right
- 1:21:11that's a fact so it's logical so I stood
- 1:21:14agree for example statistics the average
- 1:21:18height of a 25 year old man in North
- 1:21:21America is blah blah blah it's it's a
- 1:21:24statistic so it's definitely correct we
- 1:21:27have examples saying for example blah
- 1:21:31blah blah it's also a logic technique
- 1:21:33and expert opinion for example Professor
- 1:21:37Casey from University of Macedonia and
- 1:21:39did a study on this and found that blah
- 1:21:42blah blah expert opinion is a very good
- 1:21:45one because what it does is
- 1:21:50it reinforces what you are saying
- 1:21:55by providing someone else that is
- 1:21:58basically the best that can be and so
- 1:22:03the audience is able to trust you even
- 1:22:05more and they trust the opinion of that
- 1:22:08person as well
- 1:22:10and then we have techniques that make
- 1:22:12the audience trust the person delivering
- 1:22:15the message like a personal I don't know
- 1:22:17which basically makes you feel more
- 1:22:19connected to the writer so when I was
- 1:22:22walking down the street I stepped on a
- 1:22:25big pile of water and that got me
- 1:22:27thinking blah blah blah so personal
- 1:22:29anecdotes make you feel more connected
- 1:22:31and Trust the person that's um writing
- 1:22:34an inclusive language again we are
- 1:22:37Australians blah blah blah because it
- 1:22:41makes you think that you and the writer
- 1:22:45are in the same group so if you're in
- 1:22:47the same group their interests are the
- 1:22:50same as mine so I should actually agree
- 1:22:52with them
- 1:22:54foreign
- 1:22:56this leads us to our next activity so
- 1:23:01let's go into menti and enter the code
- 1:23:03again
- 1:23:04and I'm just gonna share my screen to it
- 1:23:07we have a few like a quick couple of
- 1:23:09specific technique questions
- 1:23:18all right let me see some people joining
- 1:23:21I only have one two
- 1:23:24I'll wait just
- 1:23:26um
- 1:23:27a couple of minutes for everyone to join
- 1:23:29us
- 1:23:30again I'm just going to copy and paste
- 1:23:32the link into the chart so that you can
- 1:23:35quickly
- 1:23:38go in there
- 1:23:41all right see more people joining
- 1:23:44love to see that
- 1:23:46I'm sorry you can't see me I'll try to
- 1:23:49um see if I can get a better connection
- 1:23:50after the break and I'll put my camera
- 1:23:53on again
- 1:23:57all right awesome so we're missing a
- 1:24:00couple of people uh one more person
- 1:24:09and look at that we have like eight
- 1:24:12questions to go through
- 1:24:15um so far
- 1:24:17which is great we will answer this
- 1:24:19shortly all right awesome I'm just gonna
- 1:24:21start
- 1:24:23the countdown let's see what we have
- 1:24:25here
- 1:24:30pointing out money wasting behavior is
- 1:24:33an appeal to
- 1:24:36patriotism common sense or to a hip
- 1:24:39pocketner what do you think
- 1:24:44let's see what everyone thinks
- 1:24:52yes it's an appeal to heat bucket nerve
- 1:24:55all right so it's not an appeal to
- 1:24:56patriotism because money wasting
- 1:24:59Behavior like wasting your money doesn't
- 1:25:02really relate to budgetism it's more of
- 1:25:05um a hip-hop and layer one and it's not
- 1:25:07an appeal to common sense because nobody
- 1:25:10wants to waste their money
- 1:25:13um all right only four people answered
- 1:25:15here so I want to see more people in the
- 1:25:17next one let's see
- 1:25:20all right last one
- 1:25:27racism is no black and white HD what
- 1:25:31persuasive technique is this this is a
- 1:25:34metaphor it's a simile or it is a pan
- 1:25:38racism is no black and white issue what
- 1:25:42is that
- 1:25:47it's a pun exactly so it's not a simile
- 1:25:51because if it was a simile it would
- 1:25:54compare so it would be like racism is
- 1:25:57like blah blah blah whereas now it says
- 1:26:00it's no black and white issue so it's a
- 1:26:02pan
- 1:26:04all right awesome
- 1:26:08um
- 1:26:09next we have some questions but the
- 1:26:12questions we will answer in a little bit
- 1:26:15um I think we will go through
- 1:26:20oh yeah okay all right let's do question
- 1:26:22time just
- 1:26:25um for a little bit before we have our
- 1:26:27time to move it which will be when we'll
- 1:26:29be
- 1:26:30um moving a little bit to Yellow blood
- 1:26:33pumping
- 1:26:34um awesome so now I will answer some of
- 1:26:37the questions you already have
- 1:26:40for a quote-based prompt for a post code
- 1:26:43based response do we need to include the
- 1:26:46quote in the response so not in the
- 1:26:50introduction you don't need to include
- 1:26:51it like when you are standing your
- 1:26:53contention but you will need to include
- 1:26:56it in the essay somewhere so you can't
- 1:27:00not have it at all
- 1:27:04hope this makes sense
- 1:27:07um so not in the introduction you don't
- 1:27:09definitely need to include it there but
- 1:27:12we'll need to have it somewhere what
- 1:27:15status quo did you get so we tend to
- 1:27:17avoid saying um study scores in these
- 1:27:20Mass classes
- 1:27:22but
- 1:27:24um
- 1:27:26yeah
- 1:27:28some
- 1:27:32some common themes in movies and someone
- 1:27:35said tell us so we went through the
- 1:27:38common themes
- 1:27:40um which was awesome I hope they'd
- 1:27:41answered your question
- 1:27:44what did you mean by rewarding the topic
- 1:27:47for intro so what this means it's
- 1:27:50briefly briefly mentioning it so for
- 1:27:53example I'll go in here and show you
- 1:27:56um
- 1:27:57an example
- 1:27:59um that I had before that was really
- 1:28:01good for this one
- 1:28:07rewarding the topic is just briefly
- 1:28:11mentioning it for instance
- 1:28:15foreign
- 1:28:24for instance saying it explores a
- 1:28:28significant role of poetry and music in
- 1:28:30assisting characters so here it says
- 1:28:32discuss the role of poetry music and
- 1:28:35they're rewarding it just by saying this
- 1:28:39novel explores Blah Blah Blah by doing
- 1:28:42this and this so just mentioning what
- 1:28:44the prompt is asking not directly
- 1:28:47answering it and then you will answer it
- 1:28:50um and you will stay at your contention
- 1:28:54hope this makes sense
- 1:28:57um but I think that's what you meant
- 1:29:03all right going back to the questions
- 1:29:08is it a good way to include quotes in
- 1:29:10the intro to show The Examiner you know
- 1:29:12the text so
- 1:29:14I think including a quote is all right
- 1:29:19if the intro is all right
- 1:29:21and it also makes it a little bit more
- 1:29:24interesting because you write it so the
- 1:29:27author that you know it shows the
- 1:29:29examiner that you know the text but
- 1:29:31don't overdo it so don't write like two
- 1:29:33three quotes because
- 1:29:35I don't think it's very good it's
- 1:29:38wasting your time and at the same time
- 1:29:41kind of shows the the examine that
- 1:29:44you're trying too hard so I think
- 1:29:46including one if it fits is fine and
- 1:29:50don't overdo it
- 1:29:53do we use symbols as evidence or as
- 1:29:56arguments so if it's um
- 1:29:59if it's a meta language
- 1:30:02um based prompt so if it's asking you
- 1:30:04for example we had the problem before
- 1:30:06that said
- 1:30:08um how does a trappy use symbols to
- 1:30:10explain her word you would use it you
- 1:30:13might have used it as ever as an
- 1:30:16argument but you mostly use symbols as
- 1:30:19evidence not an argument unless again
- 1:30:23it's a thin-based prompt where my it
- 1:30:26might be rather than so the answer here
- 1:30:28is basically both but mostly as evidence
- 1:30:32especially in the prompts that are not
- 1:30:35asking you
- 1:30:36for symbols or meta language
- 1:30:40having a hard time remembering quotes
- 1:30:43any tips on how to Remember quotes
- 1:30:45that's my the best question for me to
- 1:30:49answer I love it so what I did is had
- 1:30:52cure cards and had like the same
- 1:30:55um and at one the theme or like
- 1:30:59um specific context I wanted to use this
- 1:31:01quoting and at the back of the cue card
- 1:31:03I had all of the quotes listed
- 1:31:06and so when I needed to write an essay I
- 1:31:10looked at the front and the back and
- 1:31:14just read all the quotes that were for
- 1:31:17example I had a theme that was like lost
- 1:31:20and all the quotes related to it
- 1:31:23and because I read it over and over
- 1:31:25again tried trying to um write essays
- 1:31:29then I remembered it much more clearly
- 1:31:31like it came to me like an image when I
- 1:31:34was in the exam so I think you will be
- 1:31:37able to do that to remember what's
- 1:31:39better
- 1:31:40cue cards themes or characters or
- 1:31:43anything that you might be able to
- 1:31:45relate a quote with and then the list of
- 1:31:48all the quotes
- 1:31:50um azada if you have any other tips
- 1:31:52please join join in as well
- 1:31:56um sorry I think I didn't give you the
- 1:31:57chance to do that do you have any tapes
- 1:31:59on remembering quotes better
- 1:32:07you're new to Zeta
- 1:32:12so I was saying um The Cue card method
- 1:32:15they used I used the same method and I
- 1:32:17think it helps uh remembering certain
- 1:32:19codes for certain things
- 1:32:23amazing yeah I think it's really good so
- 1:32:25use it and yeah you won't lose
- 1:32:32annotation finding the arguments like in
- 1:32:35this page where they don't clearly break
- 1:32:37the paragraphs
- 1:32:39um tips on finding the arguments the
- 1:32:42arguments will be
- 1:32:45surrounded by all the evidence all the
- 1:32:48persuasive techniques Etc
- 1:32:51so are you talking about the listening
- 1:32:53task here
- 1:32:55if you are give me a thumbs up in the
- 1:32:58chat
- 1:32:59um but if you're talking about the
- 1:33:01listing because I'm just trying to think
- 1:33:02in this page
- 1:33:04argument analysis in space where they
- 1:33:07don't clearly like the arguments
- 1:33:09uh but then don't clearly break the
- 1:33:11progress
- 1:33:15um
- 1:33:16I can't think of any
- 1:33:18that I have come across where in in a
- 1:33:22language analysis
- 1:33:24that
- 1:33:31um do you have any ideas of that on this
- 1:33:33one
- 1:33:43I'm not sure about this one
- 1:33:48like were there arguments and and start
- 1:33:52okay
- 1:33:53um so basically
- 1:33:55think of it as like their contention so
- 1:34:00their contention
- 1:34:02will have their arguments
- 1:34:06I'm just trying to explain it the best
- 1:34:07way I can and also considering like what
- 1:34:11you said where they don't clearly break
- 1:34:12the paragraphs
- 1:34:14um just think of it that way don't look
- 1:34:17at the evidence or not the persuasive
- 1:34:20techniques but look at the things that
- 1:34:22have been said before that are trying
- 1:34:26that the person is trying to justify so
- 1:34:30if they have said for example and
- 1:34:32they're usually they're clear like the
- 1:34:35clearly said sentences for example
- 1:34:39um pitbull pit bull terriers shouldn't
- 1:34:42be
- 1:34:43um banned because of very dangerous so
- 1:34:46because they're very dangerous will be
- 1:34:48like an argument or
- 1:34:51because blah blah blah so there are
- 1:34:53reasons they give for their overall
- 1:34:55contention will be your argument so try
- 1:34:58to find reasons this is my tip and I
- 1:35:02hope it helps because I haven't come
- 1:35:04across I think I know what you mean now
- 1:35:07like in a space where they don't like
- 1:35:08they're not in this in the top
- 1:35:11of each one of the paragraphs so try to
- 1:35:13identify the reasons
- 1:35:19um and
- 1:35:22that was all for now for our questions
- 1:35:25so what we will do now
- 1:35:29is go back to our presentation
- 1:35:35and have a little bit of a movie time so
- 1:35:39I want to solve oh sorry
- 1:35:42I need to
- 1:35:44find where we are
- 1:35:47um so I want to solve to start
- 1:35:53just have a little bit of time for
- 1:35:56um
- 1:36:00for us to
- 1:36:02come back and bring all our energy back
- 1:36:04so let's have a look at this video I
- 1:36:06think this is mine
- 1:36:09um I'll be leading the psychology
- 1:36:11session tomorrow as well so if anyone is
- 1:36:14doing psychology
- 1:36:15um I would love for you to join in it's
- 1:36:1710 to 4 tomorrow hey my name is Diana

- 1:36:29to answer questions effectively to get
- 1:36:31full marks and help you Ace the exam
- 1:36:34this year
- 1:36:35the exam revision series is a perfect
- 1:36:37opportunity to see everything you need
- 1:36:39to know about the exam make sure that
- 1:36:40you know everything and you don't have
- 1:36:42any gaps you know let's and ask
- 1:36:43questions to recent graduates who will
- 1:36:46also set the same exam as you will be I
- 1:36:49am currently studying psychology and I
- 1:36:51really love it because it answers the
- 1:36:54questions of why and how do different
- 1:36:57processes happen in our life for example
- 1:37:00um how does memory work how does
- 1:37:02learning works which is what we will be
- 1:37:06going through in the exam religion
- 1:37:07series
- 1:37:08is so deep for me which I am still doing
- 1:37:11with all my learning objectives would be
- 1:37:13to get all the points from the study
- 1:37:15design and use them in your note-taking
- 1:37:18when you are revising for the exam just
- 1:37:20to make sure that you know everything
- 1:37:21highlight the important aspects and the
- 1:37:24key
- 1:37:25um and the keywords and then go
- 1:37:27underneath and just write all your notes
- 1:37:29and yeah just make sure that you're
- 1:37:31familiar with everything because it's
- 1:37:32that design really is
- 1:37:35um very important for you thank you for
- 1:37:38watching um we're very excited to see
- 1:37:40you in the VC exam revision Series this
- 1:37:43year with Skyline Hajj foreign

- 1:37:49and now it's time to move it
- 1:37:54um I know that I can't see any of you
- 1:37:57um but I can feel the energy in the room
- 1:38:02um going down someone is asking if I can
- 1:38:05send the link for psychology uh
- 1:38:08absolutely so if you go in here let me
- 1:38:11just go to the end of the video
- 1:38:16you can go into skyland.u
- 1:38:25to sign up
- 1:38:27um or you can use the QR code that you
- 1:38:31can see in the video right now
- 1:38:37um all right awesome now before we have
- 1:38:40another quick five minute break we are
- 1:38:44going to use some time to move it
- 1:38:48because I know I can't see you but I can
- 1:38:50feel the energy going down
- 1:38:52um I can feel
- 1:38:54um everyone is getting tired it's been
- 1:38:56two hours so
- 1:38:58let's do some dopamine clubs dopamine
- 1:39:02clubs are very good because
- 1:39:05they just help get your blood moving
- 1:39:07throughout your body and just increase
- 1:39:10your energy so I'll start
- 1:39:13um will join me and we hope that
- 1:39:17everyone will be doing it behind the
- 1:39:19camera so that we're not ridiculous so
- 1:39:21let's do 10
- 1:39:24jumping and clapping your hands above
- 1:39:27your head so that
- 1:39:29you get moving
- 1:39:37I think I'm gonna do more
- 1:39:43all right
- 1:39:47um awesome
- 1:39:48and I hope everyone did it because I
- 1:39:51feel much better now
- 1:39:53uh my video was frozen

- 1:40:17go for another quick five minute break
- 1:40:20just to grab some water and
- 1:40:24and you know just have a mental break
- 1:40:25and let's be back here at 3 56.
- 1:40:30and I'll see everyone then

- 1:44:40stop staring my screen again
- 1:44:43foreign
- 1:44:51[Music]
- 1:44:52hi my name's Susan and I'm one of the
- 1:44:55English tutors here at Skyline hatch and
- 1:44:58I'll be running the ransom and the queen
- 1:45:00master class for comparative text
- 1:45:03response this master class is
- 1:45:05essentially just a deep dive into Ransom
- 1:45:07in the queen so we'll kind of look at
- 1:45:09analyzing each text separately then
- 1:45:12we'll look at some really good examples
- 1:45:13of comparisons to answer different essay
- 1:45:16prompts and we'll also look at some high
- 1:45:19scoring and low scoring essay responses
- 1:45:21to Ransom and the queen comparative
- 1:45:23fronts I hope to see you there
- 1:45:26foreign
- 1:45:35matter you can still join the English
- 1:45:39random Queen one just for the comparison
- 1:45:42between the text and
- 1:45:44um you can still join through
- 1:45:46scoutland.org
- 1:45:48um I am aware that my video is still
- 1:45:51lagging so I'm just gonna try to change
- 1:45:54into my Hotspot again if you give me one
- 1:45:56second
- 1:46:08all right hopefully it's better now
- 1:46:12um so let's move on to what we have
- 1:46:15prepared for you next which is analyzing
- 1:46:18visuals and this is also one of my
- 1:46:21favorite parts to prevent don't ask me
- 1:46:24which one is not my favorite because
- 1:46:26everything is as I've been saying all
- 1:46:29right awesome so
- 1:46:31analyzing visuals this is very important
- 1:46:34because
- 1:46:49sorry everyone I dropped out for a
- 1:46:52second
- 1:46:54I'm just gonna start sharing my screen
- 1:46:56again can you hear me and see me well
- 1:47:06all right awesome
- 1:47:09you can see me and hear me
- 1:47:16um I'm just gonna really start sorry
- 1:47:19sorry about this guys sorry about the
- 1:47:21little
- 1:47:22technical difficulties we're
- 1:47:25experiencing
- 1:47:26um
- 1:47:27awesome visual analysis
- 1:47:34okay so you need to analyze your visuals
- 1:47:38every time so even if it is just luck in
- 1:47:44one of your paragraphs which
- 1:47:49um you need to talk about it to get a
- 1:47:52high scoring response
- 1:47:54I can see that my screen is still
- 1:47:58loading is it the same for you
- 1:48:12um
- 1:48:13okay awesome I think now we can say it
- 1:48:21it's sort of different
- 1:48:28foreign
- 1:48:32about this guy
- 1:48:39all right
- 1:48:40um
- 1:48:41moving on so what do you so how do you
- 1:48:46analyze your visuals some things you
- 1:48:49need to do or some questions you need to
- 1:48:51answer is who or what is the image or in
- 1:48:56the image and how is it related to the
- 1:48:59overall issue so you need to know these
- 1:49:01in order to be able to analyze them and
- 1:49:04also what is your attention drawn to in
- 1:49:07the picture
- 1:49:08and why is your attention run to that is
- 1:49:11it because of the size the position or
- 1:49:13the language that is being used and what
- 1:49:16is this element important is it because
- 1:49:19it plays a role in what the author wants
- 1:49:22to say to you
- 1:49:23what is the main subject of the picture
- 1:49:25and what attribute of characteristic of
- 1:49:28this subject is being emphasized for
- 1:49:31example in cartoon sometimes
- 1:49:34um people tend to exaggerate so they
- 1:49:37might Draw Something the artist might
- 1:49:39draw something that's much bigger like
- 1:49:42the ears to represent someone who is
- 1:49:48um who wants to hear everything wants to
- 1:49:50know everything
- 1:49:51um so for what purpose is this stuff how
- 1:49:54are we as an audience meant to feel and
- 1:49:56how does this link to the contention of
- 1:49:59the overall written pace
- 1:50:03and some quick questions to ask is what
- 1:50:06has this visual been included in the
- 1:50:08space in the first place so how does it
- 1:50:11add to your knowledge why has it been
- 1:50:13included at this specific point so is it
- 1:50:17in the middle is it at the start is it
- 1:50:19at the end which of the author's
- 1:50:21arguments does it link with
- 1:50:24and what can I say in the description
- 1:50:27like is there a description and what
- 1:50:29does it mean and does it link with any
- 1:50:32other aspects of the text for example a
- 1:50:34headline is the headline the same as the
- 1:50:39um as a visual look for the link between
- 1:50:42the written and the visual material
- 1:50:47now these all the next slides that we're
- 1:50:51going to go through is things that you
- 1:50:54need to analyze
- 1:50:56first one is the context and the
- 1:50:59position of the visual so to fully
- 1:51:02understand it you must understand the
- 1:51:04purpose sometimes just by reading the
- 1:51:07background information that accompany
- 1:51:09the task you know
- 1:51:11um what what it is about so you will see
- 1:51:13the background info and this will be
- 1:51:15your context
- 1:51:18um but some other times you'll need to
- 1:51:20read through the text and then you
- 1:51:22understand it better so then you know
- 1:51:24the context of it better
- 1:51:26so is the visual and then the position
- 1:51:28of it is it at the start to elicit
- 1:51:31empathy or sock or is it in the middle
- 1:51:34because it wants to reinforce a
- 1:51:36particular piece of evidence or reason
- 1:51:38for example and this is very often the
- 1:51:41case with graphs they tend to be in the
- 1:51:43middle because the written language says
- 1:51:47that 30 of people
- 1:51:49um
- 1:51:50for example happened to do this and this
- 1:51:53and then there is a picture of a graph
- 1:51:57and it reinforces the EV it's there as
- 1:52:01evidence because it reinforces
- 1:52:03um this
- 1:52:04is it at the end to consolidate the
- 1:52:07argument as a whole and to reinforce it
- 1:52:09is it a frame or border to the written
- 1:52:12piece that contributes to the overall
- 1:52:14tone of the text like if there's a
- 1:52:16border it might be very formal or if it
- 1:52:20might be a Blog
- 1:52:22um alternatively if the visual is a
- 1:52:24completely separate text from their base
- 1:52:28and what does this mean this means is it
- 1:52:30your second text is it a cartoon
- 1:52:34um is it something that has been there
- 1:52:35for comparison with your main text
- 1:52:38does it present the same or a different
- 1:52:40point of view of the issue sometimes it
- 1:52:43can present the same as well
- 1:52:46the other thing you need to analyze is
- 1:52:48color so there is one versus cool colors
- 1:52:52so worm colors like red orange and
- 1:52:55yellow represent or actually
- 1:52:59um
- 1:53:00make the audience feel warmth or Comfort
- 1:53:04or depending on the context on your own
- 1:53:08embarrassment and then we have cool
- 1:53:10colors which is blue green and purple
- 1:53:12which represent more of calm and
- 1:53:15Tranquility or sadness and misery so
- 1:53:18this is why context is important because
- 1:53:20it can be different things that
- 1:53:22represent
- 1:53:25um so something to ask yourself is how
- 1:53:27does the color or the shading of the
- 1:53:28visual
- 1:53:30um contribute to this meaning
- 1:53:33to the meaning of the text so also build
- 1:53:36a layer of the design elements so for
- 1:53:39example if you have a web page
- 1:53:41um there might be like something in
- 1:53:45different in the design or it might be
- 1:53:48that they have a specific border that
- 1:53:51you will need to talk about because it
- 1:53:53will add to the tone
- 1:53:57then we have photographs and there's a
- 1:54:00lot to talk about when you're talking
- 1:54:02about photographs
- 1:54:04one thing to ask yourself just to I'm
- 1:54:06going to start you with that is what
- 1:54:09would impact be if I changed an element
- 1:54:12of the photograph for example if the
- 1:54:15focus on this picture was at the girl at
- 1:54:18the back and not the camera it would be
- 1:54:21completely different I think so
- 1:54:23answering this question will give you a
- 1:54:25better Insight on what the photograph is
- 1:54:27intending to achieve
- 1:54:30so things you need to look out for is it
- 1:54:33a low angle shot is it looking up at the
- 1:54:35subject or is it a high angle side
- 1:54:38um looking down on the subject or
- 1:54:40straight on
- 1:54:42for example a lower sort
- 1:54:45um a low angle start of a child might
- 1:54:47give the impression that they have been
- 1:54:49able to overcome adversity or achieve
- 1:54:52success so low shot and we'll remember
- 1:54:54is the one that's looking up at the
- 1:54:57subject so you are looking down at the
- 1:54:59photo whereas my suggest that the person
- 1:55:03is vulnerable or remorseful
- 1:55:06look at whether the subject is in the
- 1:55:08foreground or in the background so here
- 1:55:11the photograph the camera is in the
- 1:55:15foreground whether elements are blurred
- 1:55:18or in soft focus whether there is a
- 1:55:20filter and as we said before filters are
- 1:55:23meant to elicit feelings as well where
- 1:55:26the Horizon is placed in a landscape
- 1:55:28shot if the Horizon is far away it can
- 1:55:32signal isolation or opportunity again
- 1:55:35depending on the context and what is
- 1:55:38actually in the frame and what might
- 1:55:40have been left out so for example if
- 1:55:42there's a photo of like a family and you
- 1:55:47see the mom and dad holding her the mom
- 1:55:49and the child holding hands and someone
- 1:55:51is cut off it might be talking about you
- 1:55:53know divorce RNs etc etc so there might
- 1:55:57be things that have been left out of the
- 1:55:58frame
- 1:56:01another thing that's very interesting to
- 1:56:04analyze it's is charts and diagrams and
- 1:56:07one thing to ask yourself is how does
- 1:56:10this information relate to the written
- 1:56:12text how does it support or contradict
- 1:56:15it
- 1:56:16um I don't think child two diagrams will
- 1:56:19contradict what has been said just
- 1:56:20because they're not usually used as a
- 1:56:23second text so only in the main text
- 1:56:26so then they contain numerical
- 1:56:28information as you know and they use to
- 1:56:30present evidence so in charts and
- 1:56:33diagrams
- 1:56:34um as I said before as well tend to be
- 1:56:36in the middle of the text because they
- 1:56:39are company evidence so their company
- 1:56:42persuasive techniques like expert
- 1:56:44opinion and um everything that's facts
- 1:56:48you're not in a position to question the
- 1:56:51data but you can explore how the
- 1:56:53information and the way that it's been
- 1:56:56presented are used to strengthen it
- 1:56:59some things that are good to you to
- 1:57:01what's for is what the visual elements
- 1:57:05suggest and how they connect to each
- 1:57:07other whether there's a background image
- 1:57:09for example
- 1:57:11um if there are statistics about gun
- 1:57:13violence there might be an image of a
- 1:57:16gun beneath the statistics with the data
- 1:57:19is attributed to an authority for
- 1:57:21example Australian Bureau of statistic
- 1:57:23the ABS which is also expert so expert
- 1:57:26knowledge or statistical evidence and
- 1:57:29sometimes it can be look dry and
- 1:57:31intimidating for a reason so you're
- 1:57:33meant to explore this reason
- 1:57:36again any questions on this
- 1:57:39um jump in dementi and I'll be aware
- 1:57:42that there's a new code now because
- 1:57:44we've reached the second part of um the
- 1:57:47presentation the code is now 18 48 1936.
- 1:57:55and now cartoon so a great source of
- 1:57:59satire and irony cartoons can be used as
- 1:58:02second text but also as first are the
- 1:58:06first Stakes I believe the year when I
- 1:58:08did my exam we had a second text as a
- 1:58:11cartoon I don't
- 1:58:12um I don't know but I think so so there
- 1:58:16are a lot of things that you can look at
- 1:58:18first is context again what is the issue
- 1:58:21what has been happening why is this
- 1:58:23cartoon here next is the comment for
- 1:58:27example over here is there a political
- 1:58:29or social comment it's usually one of
- 1:58:33the two then the contention so what is
- 1:58:37the author Trend what is the artist
- 1:58:39trying to tell us and the contention is
- 1:58:42usually a little harder than defining
- 1:58:44the cartoons because a lot of them are
- 1:58:46satirical and ironical and you might
- 1:58:48think that what they're saying is
- 1:58:50actually their attention when in reality
- 1:58:52it's the opposite
- 1:58:56um so if you identify their tone it's
- 1:58:58serious funny Dark chances are you'll be
- 1:59:02um is able to identify the contention
- 1:59:05easier then we have use of irony
- 1:59:08um situational versus linguistic and
- 1:59:12then size of the feature so which
- 1:59:15feature is exaggerated here we have a
- 1:59:18huge leg so this is an exaggeration here
- 1:59:23and it means something
- 1:59:25um if the nose is exaggerated it might
- 1:59:28be that you know they're lying like
- 1:59:30Pinocchio so you need to look at for the
- 1:59:32size of the features
- 1:59:34let's practice on this one and then
- 1:59:38um I have a momentum one as well so
- 1:59:40let's practice on this one guns cause
- 1:59:43all of this trouble we have a family
- 1:59:45here we have two parents that say guns
- 1:59:47cause all of this trouble and as child
- 1:59:50that's playing video games with guns and
- 1:59:52saying kill them kill them all so what's
- 1:59:56the context of this cartoon gun violin
- 2:00:00so we can see here there was a school
- 2:00:03massacre and that's why they the parents
- 2:00:07are saying that gods are the problem
- 2:00:09here
- 2:00:10so these are the comments
- 2:00:13but what's the contention of the author
- 2:00:16it's not to say that video games are
- 2:00:20um
- 2:00:21video games are very fun and kids play
- 2:00:25them look how happy they are or that
- 2:00:28guns caused all the trouble that's not
- 2:00:31their contention their contention is
- 2:00:32that you know while the parents are here
- 2:00:37saying that God's cause all of this
- 2:00:39trouble they let they ironically let the
- 2:00:43child play with this video game that's
- 2:00:46very violent and
- 2:00:50they in fact are causing this trouble by
- 2:00:55raising the child
- 2:00:57um looking at guns etc etc so it's all
- 2:00:59like connected but at the same time
- 2:01:02there is irony here so it's not very
- 2:01:04easy to identify these connections so
- 2:01:07the easiest thing the best thing to do
- 2:01:10practice is
- 2:01:12um just to look at many of these reads
- 2:01:15um their explanation and yeah Etc so the
- 2:01:19talk here of course is ironical
- 2:01:23all right
- 2:01:24um let's go into Mandy there is a new
- 2:01:27code sorry about this going and enter
- 2:01:31the code 1848 1936.
- 2:01:37um and as that if you can put that in
- 2:01:38the chat as well that would be amazing
- 2:01:48and I'm just gonna go in there
- 2:01:52in part two as well and
- 2:01:56yeah and also let me
- 2:02:16let's see
- 2:02:18um
- 2:02:35[Music]
- 2:02:44great
- 2:02:45[Music]
- 2:02:49all right
- 2:02:51consider the visual image with the
- 2:02:54context of veganism how would you best
- 2:02:58describe the tone of this visual image
- 2:03:00and we have an image here that saying
- 2:03:02dick in everybody
- 2:03:05and awesome
- 2:03:08runs by me again
- 2:03:10sorry I just realized the time was not
- 2:03:13enough
- 2:03:14um
- 2:03:15but ironical satirical sarcastic and
- 2:03:18working that's definitely correct
- 2:03:22and how how do we know this let me bring
- 2:03:25the photo up
- 2:03:33I just realized I don't know how to turn
- 2:03:36this music off and that's very annoying
- 2:03:38um
- 2:03:39okay so let's have a look at the photo
- 2:03:43the photo is saying
- 2:03:47um digging everybody and run this by me
- 2:03:50again I'm faint from the heat we were
- 2:03:53flirting in the barnyard and somebody
- 2:03:56chopped off our heads so it's in the
- 2:03:59context of veganism and
- 2:04:02um
- 2:04:05what do you think so it's satirical
- 2:04:07because it's supposed to be a
- 2:04:10conversation between like the person and
- 2:04:13the
- 2:04:15um
- 2:04:16and the food here so it's saying that
- 2:04:20you know eating meat is bad
- 2:04:23Etc and that's why it's used in this
- 2:04:27context
- 2:04:31so let me just go back into the
- 2:04:34presentation
- 2:04:38all right so
- 2:04:40um I I hope analyzing This was
- 2:04:44um good practice
- 2:04:46and doing this activity so we have one
- 2:04:49more here so imagine you're reading a
- 2:04:51text Publix publish on your local
- 2:04:53newspaper that urges people to donate
- 2:04:56money to help farmers during drug drugs
- 2:04:59so you see this picture below and it was
- 2:05:02taken during the Great Depression in the
- 2:05:05U.S to capture the reality of farmers
- 2:05:07during that time
- 2:05:09the picture is called the Migrant Mother
- 2:05:11how would you analyze it
- 2:05:15so first we need to look at how who or
- 2:05:18what is in the image so as we can see
- 2:05:20from the background it's the my
- 2:05:22grandmother and how is it related to the
- 2:05:24issue it is related because she was a
- 2:05:27farmer at the time and there was a
- 2:05:29drought and as we can see
- 2:05:32we don't see like the family in the best
- 2:05:37um State they could be in so our
- 2:05:39attention is drawn to that the mother
- 2:05:42and her facial expressions is it because
- 2:05:45of the size position or language is
- 2:05:47because of her position and because
- 2:05:49she's in the middle of the picture like
- 2:05:51this and it's important this element is
- 2:05:54important because it shows us the
- 2:05:56reality behind the
- 2:05:59um drought and how the farmers actually
- 2:06:02wear so what is the main subject we said
- 2:06:06um the mother and what attribute or
- 2:06:09characteristic of this subject is being
- 2:06:11emphasized it's her forehead I would say
- 2:06:15because it is
- 2:06:17um
- 2:06:18she has a very distinct facial
- 2:06:21expression we can see and this is being
- 2:06:23emphasized for the purpose of us
- 2:06:26understanding that she's feeling
- 2:06:29um
- 2:06:30sad
- 2:06:32you can say devastated you can say the
- 2:06:35facial expression says a lot
- 2:06:38so we are also meant to feel
- 2:06:41um this is mental illicit emotion in us
- 2:06:43and this links to the contention of the
- 2:06:46written face because
- 2:06:48because we feel that way we are meant to
- 2:06:52we are more likely to donate money to
- 2:06:56help the farmers
- 2:06:57um during
- 2:06:59um during droughts
- 2:07:02um this is a very good example because
- 2:07:03if you just go through all of the
- 2:07:05questions you're able to actually write
- 2:07:08a small paragraph analyzing them
- 2:07:11um awesome which brings us to
- 2:07:14section three which is the listening
- 2:07:18task now what we will be talking about
- 2:07:21in the
- 2:07:22um
- 2:07:23in this section is common mistakes we'll
- 2:07:27be talking about
- 2:07:29um what the listening task is for
- 2:07:32example here so it's approximately 3.5
- 2:07:35to 4 minutes in length and it's either a
- 2:07:39monologue or a dialogue and if it's
- 2:07:42dialogue it will be between a male and a
- 2:07:44female speaker not that this really
- 2:07:45matters for you guys
- 2:07:47so it consists of Sword answer questions
- 2:07:49and possibly a table sometimes this
- 2:07:51happens as well
- 2:07:53um and it provides so you will need to
- 2:07:56use the necessarily English and final
- 2:07:59exam texts include radio interviews
- 2:08:02conversation between friends and
- 2:08:04neighbors motivational speakers and
- 2:08:06online chat it can be a lot of things
- 2:08:10and so this is outcome three but this is
- 2:08:13just uh for what you did in school this
- 2:08:16is not the end of your exam and it's
- 2:08:19comprehension of a spoken text short
- 2:08:21answer responses in Note Form summaries
- 2:08:26so
- 2:08:28understanding
- 2:08:30task is straightforward all you need to
- 2:08:33do is listen
- 2:08:35but in reality that's not the case and
- 2:08:38let's look at the vcaa key criteria for
- 2:08:41the listening task and let's look at all
- 2:08:43the things you need to do to do well in
- 2:08:45your listening so identify record and
- 2:08:48organize literally literal and inferred
- 2:08:52meaning in spoken text so not only you
- 2:08:55need to understand what they're saying
- 2:08:57right now but you also need to
- 2:08:59understand what they mean by using
- 2:09:02certain language use contextual
- 2:09:04information to support understanding of
- 2:09:06the text
- 2:09:07identify and explain the relationship
- 2:09:10between the speakers and the audience
- 2:09:12the purpose of the tags and the speakers
- 2:09:14views and attitudes and how these affect
- 2:09:17the structural language and delivery of
- 2:09:20the spoken text so all of these are
- 2:09:24things that you will need to explain but
- 2:09:26are not explicitly sent to you so you
- 2:09:29need to understand them through the
- 2:09:32meaning of the text use the reference
- 2:09:35references to the text to demonstrate
- 2:09:37your understanding so examples use
- 2:09:40written visual material were available
- 2:09:42to support your understanding this is
- 2:09:44not relevant to us and apply the
- 2:09:47convention of spelling punctuation and
- 2:09:49syntax of Standard Style English
- 2:09:51accurately and appropriately when
- 2:09:53demonstrating understanding of spoken
- 2:09:54text
- 2:09:56um this is something you always need to
- 2:09:59just be a little bit more mindful
- 2:10:04all right so what are some things that
- 2:10:06you can do to ensure that you comprehend
- 2:10:09the text first carefully read the
- 2:10:11questions during your reading time so if
- 2:10:15you are able to read them remember the
- 2:10:18question sometimes when you hear the
- 2:10:19answer you know which one which question
- 2:10:22it is for do you straight go there
- 2:10:24answer it or write your note and then
- 2:10:27you can come back and answer it and it
- 2:10:30just helps a lot
- 2:10:31don't listen to answer listen to
- 2:10:33understand what the text is saying
- 2:10:35because in a lot of examples and I'll
- 2:10:38show you some later it will ask you to
- 2:10:40answer some questions that you cannot
- 2:10:42answer just by listening you need to
- 2:10:44understand what it's saying for example
- 2:10:47describe the
- 2:10:50um relationship of the two characters
- 2:10:52you won't be able to say by just
- 2:10:56listening to it you will need to
- 2:10:57understand it
- 2:11:00now the next question is how do I get
- 2:11:02full marks
- 2:11:04this is
- 2:11:06easy
- 2:11:07um in a way you just need to look at the
- 2:11:09amount of marks that a question is worth
- 2:11:12and this is how many points you need to
- 2:11:14include for example we have here one
- 2:11:17that says how does jaw see as the what
- 2:11:20does jaw say and the purpose of his talk
- 2:11:23with the recruits give one example of
- 2:11:26languages or deliver to support your
- 2:11:28answer so two marks or two sentences
- 2:11:32what does Joe see as a purpose so
- 2:11:35answering this he says blah blah blah
- 2:11:38and one examples and the example of
- 2:11:40language use is blah blah blah here
- 2:11:44some give an example of a strategy only
- 2:11:47one Mark so just one example of a
- 2:11:49strategy
- 2:11:50this is how you get full marks
- 2:11:55now let's see some common questions that
- 2:11:59shouldn't tend to answer incorrectly and
- 2:12:01what the real meaning is and how to
- 2:12:03actually try to do your best in
- 2:12:06answering those and getting full marks
- 2:12:09again
- 2:12:10so first one is support your answer with
- 2:12:14one piece of evidence from the text this
- 2:12:16just means use a quote or a word or a
- 2:12:20phrase from the text so an example from
- 2:12:24the text to support your answers so
- 2:12:27something that you have gotten straight
- 2:12:28from in there
- 2:12:30give an example of the characters
- 2:12:32indirect language what does this mean
- 2:12:35this refers to an expression of the
- 2:12:37content
- 2:12:38um in the longer and clear fashion for
- 2:12:41example if you say oh well if you go
- 2:12:44into a shop and say oh well I'm just
- 2:12:46browsing you mean I don't need any help
- 2:12:49in reality or if you say um I'll think
- 2:12:52about it that might mean no thank you so
- 2:12:55this is the indirect language saying
- 2:12:58something that actually meaning
- 2:12:59something else so the examples of
- 2:13:01indirect language would be these ones
- 2:13:03here
- 2:13:05the other one give an example of
- 2:13:07delivery and language used to support
- 2:13:11your answer so
- 2:13:13the example of delivery is the one
- 2:13:17that's been building and language use is
- 2:13:19the other one so delivery is the way
- 2:13:23that you say something and language uses
- 2:13:25what you actually say for example using
- 2:13:28repetition being repetitive is the
- 2:13:30example of delivery and then saying no
- 2:13:33no no is an example of your languages or
- 2:13:36using imperatives do not do this using
- 2:13:40Fast Pace using pauses to show that you
- 2:13:45are
- 2:13:47indecisive testing emphasis on words
- 2:13:50using increased volume rhetorical
- 2:13:52questions and again emphatic tones so
- 2:13:55this is the example of delivery and the
- 2:13:57other one is the example of language use
- 2:14:00another one is describe the character's
- 2:14:03phone so all you need oh all you need to
- 2:14:07know here is the examples of
- 2:14:11um
- 2:14:12it's the tone words we have a big table
- 2:14:16um and in the language analysis I think
- 2:14:19also with you after this but if you know
- 2:14:22all the tone words and what kind of term
- 2:14:26they described you'll be right to answer
- 2:14:27this one
- 2:14:29yeah here you go so the other one is
- 2:14:32describe the interaction between
- 2:14:35characters you have example of positive
- 2:14:38interactions an example of negative
- 2:14:40interactions here just to help you
- 2:14:42understand
- 2:14:44um and sort of just like get some
- 2:14:47examples that you will be able to use as
- 2:14:49well this just asks you to identify you
- 2:14:52know how am I interacting with the other
- 2:14:54person that's talking for example
- 2:14:58um you need to answer how the characters
- 2:15:00are interacting so are they genuine
- 2:15:02direct smooth efficient are they
- 2:15:05intimate are they food friendly caring
- 2:15:07polite and kind or on the other hand are
- 2:15:11they disrespectful are they awkward
- 2:15:13tense strained defensive we have
- 2:15:16unpleasant sarcastic damaging and
- 2:15:20unfriendly
- 2:15:23all right so
- 2:15:26um as we went through these common
- 2:15:30listening to us questions I have an
- 2:15:33activity for us which is a listening
- 2:15:36task
- 2:15:36so I will get everyone to go in the I'll
- 2:15:42get a zero to post a link in the chat
- 2:15:44where you can go in to get this task
- 2:15:46just so that while we're listening to it
- 2:15:50you don't have to wait for me to skip to
- 2:15:54the next question so azada if you can
- 2:15:57post it in the chat and it should be in
- 2:16:01the yeah
- 2:16:02that's awesome
- 2:16:04um I'll get everyone to go in here I'm
- 2:16:07just gonna press it as well so that you
- 2:16:09can see what you'll be looking at
- 2:16:11this is the 20 from the 2020 eal exam
- 2:16:16um that's a text to from the listening
- 2:16:18task so I just want you guys to know
- 2:16:22where you are and
- 2:16:25how well you're doing right now and
- 2:16:27you're listening so that you'll be able
- 2:16:28to you know practice more and improve
- 2:16:31after the session and we'll go through
- 2:16:34the questions we will listen to the text
- 2:16:37and then we will answer and say why this
- 2:16:39was the correct answer
- 2:16:41so let's read the questions all together
- 2:16:45and then I'll go through and play it so
- 2:16:48Lee Lee Lee
- 2:16:50is a cafe manager and it's interviewing
- 2:16:54Taylor for a part-time job
- 2:16:56um Lei owns a chain of cafes at
- 2:16:59different locations in the city
- 2:17:02it's r at the start of the interview
- 2:17:04when Lee talks about his business what
- 2:17:07is the main motion that she communicates
- 2:17:09support your response with an example of
- 2:17:13how his delivery shows his emotion
- 2:17:17I got a question to zoom in a little yes
- 2:17:20thank you for um
- 2:17:22saying that I assume it was a problem
- 2:17:25for more people but I highly recommend
- 2:17:27for you guys to download the research or
- 2:17:30go in and see the resistance of their
- 2:17:32resources that
- 2:17:33so here we can see two marks two
- 2:17:36questions what's the main emotion and
- 2:17:39then example of delivery to that shows
- 2:17:43his emotion so you need to answer with
- 2:17:45two sentences
- 2:17:47next give two reasons that Taylor gives
- 2:17:50for wanting to work in one of latest
- 2:17:52effects again two marks for two reasons
- 2:17:56why does Taylor want a job two reasons
- 2:17:59again two marks
- 2:18:01and Lay's opinion of tailored changes
- 2:18:04when Taylor asks him questions in the
- 2:18:07space below outline what lei's opinion
- 2:18:10is before Taylor's questions
- 2:18:12give an example of Lay's delivery that
- 2:18:15shows his opinion so before an example
- 2:18:18and then we have after
- 2:18:22give an example of let's deliver the
- 2:18:24choices to change opinion after Taylor's
- 2:18:27questions so one and two again for two
- 2:18:30marks
- 2:18:31and these are all the questions we need
- 2:18:34to answer and I'm going to jump in here
- 2:18:38again but I will be stuck in this slide
- 2:18:43over here because this is the audio that
- 2:18:46we will be listening to but you guys
- 2:18:48need to scroll oops not this you need to
- 2:18:51scroll down here
- 2:18:53and
- 2:18:55um
- 2:18:55answer the question so just Mark your
- 2:18:58answers in a piece of paper and then we
- 2:19:01will do a mentee for you to answer me
- 2:19:03and tell me what you got
- 2:19:06all right awesome without further Ado
- 2:19:09I'm gonna start
- 2:19:11um playing the audio and I can't wait to
- 2:19:13hear what everyone
- 2:19:15um got for the questions
- 2:19:18thank you very much for your application
- 2:19:21Taylor
- 2:19:22as you know my cafes have been very
- 2:19:24successful for a very long time and we
- 2:19:28have been voted the most popular Cafe
- 2:19:30chain for people under the age of 25 in
- 2:19:34many surveys we only employ the best
- 2:19:37most enthusiastic people who fit with
- 2:19:41our style
- 2:19:42to begin with tell me a bit about
- 2:19:44yourself and why you applied for this
- 2:19:46job
- 2:19:48uh just finished high school and I'm
- 2:19:52planning to go to UNI next year I want
- 2:19:55to gain an insight into the food
- 2:19:56business and I'd like the best
- 2:19:59experience I can find with a successful
- 2:20:01brand
- 2:20:02I applied for the job because I know how
- 2:20:05successful your cafes are and how
- 2:20:08delicious your food is
- 2:20:10I am a regular at your Cafe so I know
- 2:20:13what I'm talking about
- 2:20:15at school I studied business management
- 2:20:18with the idea of going into business
- 2:20:20after I've completed a business course
- 2:20:23at Uni the food business seems to me to
- 2:20:26have a good future so I thought it would
- 2:20:28be great to learn from the best that's
- 2:20:31great yes we think we're the best but
- 2:20:34it's nice to hear it from someone else
- 2:20:37now what skills do you think you could
- 2:20:39bring to this job we have a lot of
- 2:20:41people applying to work here what makes
- 2:20:43you better than others
- 2:20:45to start with I'm a hard worker you just
- 2:20:48have to ask my referees I'm also
- 2:20:52punctual and I get on well with other
- 2:20:54people I'm a leader I was a member of
- 2:20:57the student leadership team at school

- 2:21:03an opportunity and I'll repay you with
- 2:21:05hard work and enthusiasm

- 2:21:11apart from eating it of course
- 2:21:14but I am very keen to learn and I know
- 2:21:17I'll do that in a short period of time
- 2:21:19if you employ me I'll be a committed
- 2:21:23employee if we were to offer you a job
- 2:21:25would you be able to start soon

- 2:21:36March when you start well we had a
- 2:21:40number of jobs at several of our cafes
- 2:21:42as you can imagine we're interviewing
- 2:21:45quite a few people for these positions
- 2:21:47we'll let you know as soon as possible
- 2:21:50have you any questions you'd like to ask
- 2:21:53could you tell me which cafes are likely
- 2:21:56to have vacancies
- 2:21:58I don't have a car and don't want to
- 2:22:01have to travel too far to get to work
- 2:22:04we're not certain where we have
- 2:22:06vacancies as yet
- 2:22:07but it's likely to be at some of our
- 2:22:09city cafes and in some of the northern
- 2:22:12suburbs I hope those locations are
- 2:22:15suitable for you anything else yes I'd
- 2:22:19like to know what shifts would be
- 2:22:21available I play basketball and I can't
- 2:22:24let my team down I'm one of the best
- 2:22:27players I don't think I could work on
- 2:22:30Friday nights
- 2:22:32what would I get paid I want to save
- 2:22:35money for a car and an overseas trip
- 2:22:37also I want to save for when I'm at Uni
- 2:22:41of course like everyone else you'd be
- 2:22:44paid the appropriate hourly rate giving
- 2:22:46your skills and experience the shifts
- 2:22:50could vary each month or sometimes week
- 2:22:52to week I must employ someone who can be
- 2:22:54flexible
- 2:22:56have you any other questions
- 2:22:58no I've found out all I need to know
- 2:23:01thanks in that case thank you for your
- 2:23:04time I have many other people to
- 2:23:06interview so I'll let you know the
- 2:23:08outcome of this interview early next
- 2:23:09week
- 2:23:13all right awesome now as always
- 2:23:17a two minute little break for you guys
- 2:23:20to jot down your answers
- 2:23:22and then we'll play the video again the
- 2:23:25audio again
- 2:23:26and then go through the answers
- 2:23:29so I'll give you a minute and a half two
- 2:23:32minutes
- 2:24:27all right I think we're good to go for
- 2:24:29the second time so I'm just gonna stop
- 2:24:31the audio again
- 2:24:34foreign
- 2:24:43as you know my cafes have been very
- 2:24:45successful for a very long time and we
- 2:24:49have been voted the most popular Cafe
- 2:24:51chain for people under the age of 25 in
- 2:24:55many surveys we only employ the best
- 2:24:58most enthusiastic people who fit with
- 2:25:01our style
- 2:25:03to begin with tell me a bit about
- 2:25:05yourself and why you applied for this
- 2:25:07job
- 2:25:08I've just finished high school and I'm
- 2:25:13planning to go to UNI next year I want
- 2:25:15to gain an insight into the food
- 2:25:17business and I'd like the best
- 2:25:20experience I can find with a successful
- 2:25:22brand
- 2:25:23I applied for the job because I know how
- 2:25:26successful your cafes are and how
- 2:25:29delicious your food is I am a regular at
- 2:25:33your Cafe so I know what I'm talking
- 2:25:35about
- 2:25:36at school I studied business management
- 2:25:38with the idea of going into business
- 2:25:41after I've completed a business course
- 2:25:43at Uni the food business seems to me to
- 2:25:47have a good future so I thought it would
- 2:25:49be great to learn from the best that's
- 2:25:52great yes we think we're the best but
- 2:25:55it's nice to hear it from someone else
- 2:25:58now what skills do you think you could
- 2:26:00bring to this job we have a lot of
- 2:26:02people applying to work here what makes
- 2:26:04you better than others
- 2:26:06to start with I'm a hard worker you just
- 2:26:09have to ask my referees I'm also
- 2:26:12punctual and I get on well with other
- 2:26:15people I'm a leader I was a member of
- 2:26:18the student leadership team at school
- 2:26:20I'm also a quick learner all I need is
- 2:26:24an opportunity and I'll repay you with
- 2:26:26hard work and enthusiasm
- 2:26:29I admit I don't know much about food
- 2:26:32apart from eating it of course
- 2:26:35but I am very keen to learn and I know
- 2:26:38I'll do that in a short period of time
- 2:26:40if you employ me I'll be a committed
- 2:26:43employee
- 2:26:45if we were to offer you a job would you
- 2:26:47be able to start soon
- 2:26:49I could start anytime you want me to as
- 2:26:54I said I have really no commitments
- 2:26:56until March when newly starts well we
- 2:27:00have a number of jobs at several of our
- 2:27:02cafes as you can imagine we're
- 2:27:05interviewing quite a few people for
- 2:27:07these positions we'll let you know as
- 2:27:09soon as possible
- 2:27:10have you any questions you'd like to ask
- 2:27:14could you tell me which cafes are likely
- 2:27:17to have vacancies
- 2:27:18I don't have a car and don't want to
- 2:27:22have to travel too far to get to work
- 2:27:24we're not certain where we have
- 2:27:26vacancies as yet
- 2:27:28but it's likely to be in some of our
- 2:27:30city cafes and in some of the northern
- 2:27:33suburbs I hope those locations are
- 2:27:36suitable for you anything else yes I'd
- 2:27:40like to know what shifts would be
- 2:27:42available I play basketball and I can't
- 2:27:45let my team down I'm one of the best
- 2:27:48players I don't think I could work on
- 2:27:51Friday nights
- 2:27:53what would I get paid I want to save
- 2:27:55money for a car and an overseas trip
- 2:27:58also I want to say for when I'm at Uni
- 2:28:02of course like everyone else you'd be
- 2:28:04paid the appropriate hourly rate giving
- 2:28:07your skills and experience the shifts
- 2:28:10could vary each month or sometimes week
- 2:28:12to week
- 2:28:14I must employ someone who can be
- 2:28:15flexible
- 2:28:17have you any other questions
- 2:28:19no I've found out all I need to know
- 2:28:21thanks in that case thank you for your
- 2:28:25time I have many other people to
- 2:28:26interview so I'll let you know the
- 2:28:29outcome of this interview early next
- 2:28:30week
- 2:28:34all right awesome how did everyone go
- 2:28:37with this one
- 2:28:39um I guess I'll find out now when we'll
- 2:28:41be doing the mentee ancestors questions
- 2:28:44so we will go through the answers and
- 2:28:48then we'll just talk about why it's a
- 2:28:51great not a correct answer what you
- 2:28:53could have done differently to get the
- 2:28:55right answer and
- 2:28:57um yeah that sort of thing all right
- 2:29:00awesome so if you all jump into
- 2:29:02mentimeter with the code again and I'll
- 2:29:05put it in the chart
- 2:29:08foreign go to this link and
- 2:29:13I can see three people in there right
- 2:29:15now I'm just gonna wait for everyone to
- 2:29:18join us and then I'm gonna start
- 2:29:22so the first one will be a question to a
- 2:29:26at the start of the interview when Lee
- 2:29:28talks about his business what is the
- 2:29:31main emotion that he communicates
- 2:29:33support your response with an example of
- 2:29:35how his delivery so is his emotion so
- 2:29:38you need to answer two things
- 2:29:41um
- 2:29:41and I've put in the correct answers in
- 2:29:44here but it's likely that the way you
- 2:29:47write it might variety so I will will go
- 2:29:50through what the correct ones were
- 2:29:53all right I'll give everyone another
- 2:29:55minute to join us and then I'll start
- 2:29:59but I don't want anyone to miss out so
- 2:30:01make sure you're in
- 2:30:10I think that's a very good text to do as
- 2:30:13an example because it has all the
- 2:30:15different types of delivery
- 2:30:18um and like language use questions which
- 2:30:20are I think the most challenging ones
- 2:30:22for students so it's good that we're
- 2:30:25doing this as examples
- 2:30:29all right I'm just gonna start
- 2:30:34correct answers yep
- 2:30:37so question two a is this one so type in
- 2:30:42your response is you have 40 seconds and
- 2:30:45when everyone has stopped we'll see the
- 2:30:47answers
- 2:31:03foreign
- 2:31:20let's see what everyone got we had Pride
- 2:31:25proud tone
- 2:31:27um all right so one mark for Pride
- 2:31:31confidence enthusiasm and one mark for
- 2:31:34pacing of delivery posing emphasis and
- 2:31:37upbeat tone so loud volume yes we would
- 2:31:41get that that's correct because it's a
- 2:31:43bit done and pride also correct so this
- 2:31:47question is correct
- 2:31:50um yeah James now we have pride and
- 2:31:53proud tone so Pride would be correct but
- 2:31:57you will get you would get one mark for
- 2:32:00it rather than both of them because
- 2:32:02proud Dawn is not an example of delivery
- 2:32:05so deliver would be upbeat tone posing
- 2:32:08or emphasis so half a mark for this one
- 2:32:11or one out of two but good try good try
- 2:32:14guys
- 2:32:16um I want to see some more people
- 2:32:17answering in the next slide
- 2:32:20and we have
- 2:32:23question two
- 2:32:27um
- 2:32:28question 2B
- 2:32:31would say is
- 2:32:33give two reasons that Taylor gives for
- 2:32:36wanting to work in one of Lay's cafes
- 2:32:40so two reasons
- 2:32:4130 more seconds let's see more people
- 2:32:44answering guys
- 2:32:54foreign
- 2:32:57s for two marks
- 2:32:59that's not very hard
- 2:33:02why does she want to work in his cafes
- 2:33:12inside into business
- 2:33:19okay so here we had a lot of good
- 2:33:22successful answers so we do you didn't
- 2:33:27need to answer only to know how
- 2:33:29successful this the cafes are so I'll
- 2:33:32tell you all of the correct ones right
- 2:33:34now so
- 2:33:35[Music]
- 2:33:36she knows how successful the cafes are
- 2:33:39she knows how delicious the food is
- 2:33:41she's thinking of going into the food
- 2:33:44business after uni and she wants to
- 2:33:47learn from the best so what you got
- 2:33:50wanting to get an insight into business
- 2:33:54yeah I think it would be considered
- 2:33:57correct because she's thinking of going
- 2:33:59into food business after you eat
- 2:34:02it's
- 2:34:05all right but I would phrase it for the
- 2:34:08next time to get from our full marks
- 2:34:11um this one also but because it says
- 2:34:13it's doing in Business course because he
- 2:34:19yeah I think this would be exactly the
- 2:34:21same as the other one into things she
- 2:34:24suffers the best and loves eating his
- 2:34:26food so this one is actually correct
- 2:34:31um she is thinking she knows how
- 2:34:35successful the cafes are and she knows
- 2:34:37how delicious the pool is this would be
- 2:34:40it so for this question you needed any
- 2:34:45two of the following so this would be
- 2:34:47one and this would also be one and this
- 2:34:51would be two marks so well done
- 2:34:55um well done and here you would just
- 2:34:58need that extra one to get the full
- 2:35:01marks
- 2:35:03but good try guys
- 2:35:05and let's look at the next question
- 2:35:08which is
- 2:35:10why does Taylor want a job give two
- 2:35:13reasons I think this one is actually a
- 2:35:16little bit easier why don't you want a
- 2:35:18job give us two reasons and you have 30
- 2:35:20seconds to answer
- 2:35:25let's see more people answering us
- 2:35:36one two answers
- 2:35:39[Music]
- 2:35:41whether she want a job in the first
- 2:35:43place what does she want to save money
- 2:35:44for
- 2:35:45all right time's up Lindsay or versus
- 2:35:48trip and saving for uni
- 2:35:51buying a car as well so this is not the
- 2:35:54only one who wants to get experience
- 2:35:56overseas trip Food business in the
- 2:35:59future
- 2:36:00so this one was
- 2:36:04why does she want a job and the correct
- 2:36:07answer as you can see here was go by
- 2:36:10what she wants to save money for buying
- 2:36:13a car going overseas or uni so Oliver
- 2:36:17stays in Saving for uni this could be
- 2:36:19two out of three well done she wants to
- 2:36:22get experience this would be a no
- 2:36:24because she wants to save money for
- 2:36:27something and that's why she wants the
- 2:36:28job
- 2:36:29um and this would also be a no because
- 2:36:32again she wants to save money for
- 2:36:34something this was one of the reasons
- 2:36:36why she wants to work in his cafes so
- 2:36:38that's why
- 2:36:40um this if you had to answer this before
- 2:36:42it would be two marks
- 2:36:46um awesome let's look at the next
- 2:36:49question now which is
- 2:36:53question two c i this one in the space
- 2:36:57outline with Lee's opinion is after
- 2:37:00Taylor's questions give an example of
- 2:37:02Lay's delivery and so his changed
- 2:37:05opinion after
- 2:37:07oh
- 2:37:09no that's actually
- 2:37:12we need the before as well so
- 2:37:17to see
- 2:37:19to di before Taylor's questions
- 2:37:28foreign
- 2:37:39impressed by the skills of Taylor you
- 2:37:42can see this
- 2:37:47he's confident in her very approachable
- 2:37:49and impressed by the skills of teller
- 2:37:51use slow pace so don't mind these sorry
- 2:37:55about this I think it's the incorrect
- 2:37:57matching of the questions but impressed
- 2:38:01and uses slow phase let's see he says
- 2:38:04Taylor as
- 2:38:06so the question actually was what's his
- 2:38:09opinion before so how does he sees
- 2:38:13Taylor so he sees her as Flint friendly
- 2:38:16kinesiastic or interested and you can
- 2:38:19say that because his tone was friendly
- 2:38:21pleased and warm and he used the rising
- 2:38:24intonation like would you be able to
- 2:38:26start soon
- 2:38:28um what you have answered here was
- 2:38:30impressed by the skills that's correct
- 2:38:32but how does he view her and use of slow
- 2:38:35Faith again was not a lot of the answers
- 2:38:37and he's confident in her and saying
- 2:38:40very approachable so you have used an
- 2:38:42example of language here but we wanted
- 2:38:45an example of delivery so he is
- 2:38:48confident in her but we wanted
- 2:38:51how does he view hair so he views her as
- 2:38:55like interested in the work key and
- 2:38:58friendly
- 2:39:00um so unfortunately none of these two
- 2:39:03um got any marks but good try guys
- 2:39:07let's look at the next one as well and
- 2:39:10the next one is what's the opinion after
- 2:39:13Taylor's questions what's his opinion
- 2:39:15about her after questions and what's an
- 2:39:18example of delivery that shows his
- 2:39:20Chain's opinion and remember example of
- 2:39:22delivery how does how do we see that
- 2:39:25all right
- 2:39:27um now this is an open
- 2:39:29um question so you can just answer
- 2:39:31freely and we will discuss the we will
- 2:39:36discuss the correct answers
- 2:39:41so you can answer whenever you want for
- 2:39:44this one
- 2:39:54let's see that she's not suitable for
- 2:39:58the job and he used a hesitant tone he's
- 2:40:01disappointed in her saying I hope those
- 2:40:04locations are suitable for you in a
- 2:40:06distant formal and sarcastic tone
- 2:40:10um now
- 2:40:11let's look at the question again outline
- 2:40:14what Lee's opinion is after Taylor's
- 2:40:17questions and give an example that shows
- 2:40:19changed opinion so what's his opinion of
- 2:40:23her remember you're not saying what he
- 2:40:26thinks like he's disappointed so you
- 2:40:29want to say what he thinks of her that
- 2:40:32she is let's have a look at the answers
- 2:40:38he sees her as self-interesting that
- 2:40:41she's only wanting to make money that
- 2:40:44she's not interested in the cafe and
- 2:40:46that is inflexible and too demanding
- 2:40:49about where she works or the time she
- 2:40:52works and how can you say that because
- 2:40:55of pace slow hesitant pace and well done
- 2:41:00over here
- 2:41:02um has done tone and is not suitable for
- 2:41:05the job that's correct but you needed to
- 2:41:07have answered house he'd use her so as
- 2:41:11if that's his self-interested so you get
- 2:41:13one mark for this one
- 2:41:17um a decent tone
- 2:41:20disappointed tone
- 2:41:23a bit doubtful I think for this one you
- 2:41:26would also get one Mark and this and
- 2:41:30tone you would also get one Mark here
- 2:41:39all right now as you can see here
- 2:41:41responses that just gave Lay's
- 2:41:43conclusion that she wants to hire her or
- 2:41:45he's impressed or he doesn't want to
- 2:41:48hurt her or insufficient
- 2:41:52um all right
- 2:41:55thank you so much for um answering guys
- 2:41:58now it's time for the next part of the Q
- 2:42:02a let me just see if you have any
- 2:42:04questions
- 2:42:06um we actually don't have any questions
- 2:42:07yet but if you have any now is the time
- 2:42:10to put them in the chat
- 2:42:12and we will answer them but while you do
- 2:42:16this or if there's anyone that doesn't
- 2:42:17have any questions
- 2:42:20um let's look at the sessions for
- 2:42:21tomorrow which are psychology and
- 2:42:25specialist math
- 2:42:27um if you're joining psychology I can't
- 2:42:28wait to see you there tomorrow and if
- 2:42:31you're doing Specialists I know the
- 2:42:33session with Sasuke will be amazing as
- 2:42:35well
- 2:42:36and
- 2:42:38let us know what you think now if you
- 2:42:41have a phone you can scan this QR code
- 2:42:43it would be amazing if you do this quick
- 2:42:47survey and let me know how you think
- 2:42:50this presentation went what you liked
- 2:42:53what you disliked because it helps me
- 2:42:55get better every year and it will also
- 2:42:58help like next year's cohort and just
- 2:43:01generally help us really improve so we
- 2:43:04do really appreciate your feedback
- 2:43:07and if azada can also paste the survey
- 2:43:11Link in the chat that would be amazing
- 2:43:13if there is one
- 2:43:20otherwise you can just scan this via
- 2:43:24phone and it will take you there I think
- 2:43:25that's pretty cool
- 2:43:34ah yes and if you fill out this survey
- 2:43:36you'll get a chance to win a 50 voucher
- 2:43:39which is pretty good I think
- 2:43:43um and we know we'll announce Monday
- 2:43:45October 4th at 11 A.M as um as I said so
- 2:43:49good luck on this and also
- 2:43:53thank you because we really do
- 2:43:55appreciate your feedback every time
- 2:43:57I hope you enjoyed this session very
- 2:43:59much let me see if there are any
- 2:44:01questions for us
- 2:44:04what did you do the day before the eael
- 2:44:07exam I did a practice essay because I
- 2:44:12think the more practices you do the
- 2:44:15better and the better you become
- 2:44:19so I did a practice essay and then I
- 2:44:21rested pretty much because that's also
- 2:44:24really important you don't want to stay
- 2:44:26up late nervous about the exam not yet
- 2:44:31um enough sleep and then when you are in
- 2:44:33there your brain won't work so you don't
- 2:44:36want to do that you don't want to get
- 2:44:39um
- 2:44:39like a brain freeze so 100 you know what
- 2:44:43I mean so yeah it rests well and do a
- 2:44:47lot of practice
- 2:44:50how do you stay calm during the AAL exam
- 2:44:54and not panic stress so
- 2:44:57what you can do is just of course one
- 2:45:00thing that helps a lot with that is
- 2:45:03being totally prepared so if you are go
- 2:45:07if you go in there feeling 100 sure
- 2:45:10about yourself and knowing that okay I
- 2:45:12know the texts I know how to answer any
- 2:45:15question that will be given to me and
- 2:45:19just being confident that you will do
- 2:45:21well a little bit of stress will just
- 2:45:25um
- 2:45:26you will be you will be relieved because
- 2:45:30when you know
- 2:45:33um that you're ready
- 2:45:34you don't tend to panic but another
- 2:45:37thing you can do is just take a breath
- 2:45:40on the day
- 2:45:41um just read through it because when you
- 2:45:43read through it you realize okay it's
- 2:45:45not that bad if you're talking about
- 2:45:49um you know when you go in there and
- 2:45:51feeling very nervous another thing to
- 2:45:53think about is that if you're nervous
- 2:45:55you won't do us as well on your essays
- 2:45:58so you want to be able to
- 2:46:02relax a little bit to do well and write
- 2:46:06good quality essays because a lot of
- 2:46:09people write
- 2:46:11um made or low scoring essays because
- 2:46:13they are very stressed and they don't
- 2:46:16know what they're writing
- 2:46:19is that a do you have any insights so
- 2:46:22what did you do and how did you stay
- 2:46:24calm during the AAL exam
- 2:46:27um for me when I was doing the practice
- 2:46:29exams I would always stress over the
- 2:46:31time
- 2:46:32like I might not finish on time and the
- 2:46:35key to that is like if you break down
- 2:46:37the paragraphs like say like 15 minutes
- 2:46:41per text respond body paragraph
- 2:46:43if you break your time down like I
- 2:46:46literally wrote it at the front of the
- 2:46:47exam like 40 minutes listening half or
- 2:46:51like an hour this one and then 10
- 2:46:53minutes reading 10 minutes that helps a
- 2:46:55lot and it helps to stay and to maintain
- 2:46:59your calmness
- 2:47:01and no stress over like not finishing on
- 2:47:03time
- 2:47:05definitely yeah planning helps a lot
- 2:47:08guys as well so keep that in mind too
- 2:47:15um all right awesome so has everyone
- 2:47:17completed the survey give me a thumbs up
- 2:47:20in the chat if you have and
- 2:47:23um
- 2:47:26you and good luck for your chance to win
- 2:47:30a 50 voucher
- 2:47:32um
- 2:47:33but let me see if anyone hasn't
- 2:47:35completed yet if you can please do this
- 2:47:37now before we go that would be amazing
- 2:47:39and then we will let you go and enjoy
- 2:47:41the rest of your afternoon
