- 0:02was kidnapped from her home at age 14 it
- 0:05began a horrific 9-month ordeal for her
- 0:07today Elizabeth Smart gets to confront
- 0:10her attacker at his sentencing hearing
- 0:12CBS News correspondent John Blackstone
- 0:14has the story when he is sentenced today
- 0:17Brian David Mitchell will not only hear
- 0:19from the judge he will also have to
- 0:22listen to Elizabeth Smart Describe the
- 0:24impact of her kidnapping and 9 months
- 0:26held captive I would encourage
- 0:30any child any victim anyone who has
- 0:35been hurt by someone that they stand up
- 0:40smart was a vulnerable 14-year-old when
- 0:43Mitchell took her at knife point from
- 0:45her Salt Lake City bedroom in June 2002
- 0:48Now 23 she has grown into a Confident
- 0:51Woman during Mitchell's trial last year
- 0:54she described how he raped her
- 0:57repeatedly difficult testimony that
- 0:59helped convin Mitchell we can speak out
- 1:02and we will be heard Mitchell did not
- 1:04actually face smart during his trial he
- 1:06was removed from court for singing hymns
- 1:09Mitchell's hold over smart was once so
- 1:11powerful that with her face hidden
- 1:13behind a veil he could take her on the
- 1:15streets of Salt Lake City without her
- 1:17attempting to escape now she is
- 1:20determined not to be labeled a victim
- 1:23there's so much good in the world and so
- 1:25much to see and learn and do that we
- 1:28can't
- 1:30we can't sit around feeling sorry for
- 1:32ourselves and we need to move on moving
- 1:35on for smart and her family may be
- 1:37easier when this long running case
- 1:39finally ends today prosecutors want
- 1:42Mitchell sentenced to prison for life
