Electrical Arcs at 1,750,000FPS - The Slow Mo Guys with ElectroBOOM — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Okay, let me see if I can turn it on
- 0:03first.
- 0:08The hell happened there?
- 0:11Hello, I'm Gav. I'm Dan. We're the
- 0:13slow-mo guys. We've not done too much
- 0:15stuff with electricity on this channel.
- 0:17Most of it's involved sort of, you know,
- 0:19shocking me or whatever. Yeah. Or a bit
- 0:20of lightning. Yeah. Because I've mainly
- 0:22been waiting to have access to two
- 0:24things at the same time. this camera and
- 0:28this guy. Hello. Hello. How are you
- 0:31doing? This is Medi from Electraboom.
- 0:33Yes. Nice to be here. I like your
- 0:35videos. Yeah, thank you. I like your
- 0:37videos. Oh, thanks. Thank you very much.
- 0:39This stuff looks pretty intense. What
- 0:41What have you got for us? Well, I have a
- 0:43I have two things. I have my Tesla coil
- 0:45here. It's a one Tesla Tesla coil. And
- 0:47then I have a MarkX generator here that
- 0:50I made. Uh hopefully that will work. I
- 0:52want to figure out some stuff that
- 0:54happens to arcs in slow motion and
- 0:57hopefully you can see it on camera.
- 0:58Yeah. So, this camera will let us go up
- 0:59to We've only ever done a million, but
- 1:01it will go up to 1.75
- 1:04million frames a second. And the marks
- 1:06generator, that's the reason I
- 1:07originally got in touch because I
- 1:08remember watching that video.
- 1:11What's going on? And you see all the
- 1:13sparks happen at the exact same time.
- 1:15That's what it looks like. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16And I thought, I wonder if they are
- 1:17actually happening at the same time or
- 1:19whether in slow-mo you would see the
- 1:20separation. Hopefully the camera is fast
- 1:22enough to capture like if it really
- 1:25happens at the same time. If it isn't
- 1:27fast enough, we will have failed you.
- 1:30Yes,
- 1:31small things. We'll just wait another 10
- 1:34years and we'll try again. Okay, we'll
- 1:35start at what 100,000 frames a second.
- 1:39That's the starting point. That's the
- 1:40starting point of this one. Yeah. Uhhuh.
- 1:42Yes. Ready?
- 1:44Okay. Stop. That was messing up the
- 1:48monitor, was it? Yeah. That was That was
- 1:50like making the monitor like zoom in and
- 1:52go like
- 1:54cuz it's a capacitive screen. Oh, weird.
- 1:57All right, that's enough.
- 2:01It's all over the place.
- 2:05Oh. Oh, yeah. There. There we go. Oh,
- 2:07it's interesting. Look at the little ts.
- 2:10It's like furry. It's still so fast.
- 2:12Like look how look how long that takes.
- 2:14I like the sort of ghost it leaves
- 2:16behind. Do you think the shape is it
- 2:19leaving behind a condition of the air
- 2:20that means the next arc follows the
- 2:22exact same pattern? That's what I think
- 2:24it does. Yeah, it should. Like it seems
- 2:26to be like the next arc follows very
- 2:28similarly the path of the last one and
- 2:30it takes a few arcs to actually
- 2:32significantly change like use up that
- 2:34path. Well, they will move. The thing is
- 2:36that the arcs will heat up the air and
- 2:38the hot air rises. So that's why you see
- 2:42that's why it's like Yeah, that's why it
- 2:45goes up. But otherwise like because it's
- 2:47not very continuous, the air has some
- 2:50time to cool down. Yeah. Okay. But the I
- 2:52don't know how long it takes for the
- 2:53because it creates an ionized channel,
- 2:56right? Are you Are you going to touch
- 2:57it? Yeah, you should. I mean, I've
- 2:59touched it before. It's not bad. It's
- 3:01like somebody's slapping you on the back
- 3:03of the hand at one hertz. Don't try the
- 3:051 kohz. It's like somebody's slapping
- 3:07you at 1,000 times a second.
- 3:10That's That's much worse. You've known
- 3:12Medie for what, two days? Yeah. Uh, are
- 3:15you at that level of trust with him yet?
- 3:16I think I think Can you not trust this
- 3:19face truly? No, I trust you. I trust
- 3:21you. So, how far do you reckon it will
- 3:23get me? It will probably go this far.
- 3:25Okay. Yeah. Let me increase the power a
- 3:27little bit.
- 3:31You can touch it now and it will be
- 3:32brighter when it jumps to you because
- 3:35Okay. Do you want me to touch it? Yeah,
- 3:37I think so. I think uh that's going to
- 3:38really help us see it. Should I go first
- 3:41so you're not scared or you want to go
- 3:43first? I'll just do it. Okay. Oh man,
- 3:46it's so noisy. Just don't punch the
- 3:48Tesla coil. Just
- 3:50Yeah. Got it. Okay. Let's have a look at
- 3:52that. Okay. All right. Let's see.
- 3:57[Music]
- 4:04So now what I want you to do is to have
- 4:06a screwdriver and point it to the arc.
- 4:09What do you think will happen? Will it
- 4:11be worse or better? I I can't imagine
- 4:13it'll be worse, right? Yeah. Because
- 4:17it's jumping to the metal. Yeah. And you
- 4:19won't feel it.
- 4:21Yes. Why would I? I've insulated myself.
- 4:24Okay. Yeah.
- 4:29Ah. Oh, you feel it. Ah, it's getting me
- 4:31like a little bit. Ah, yes.
- 4:35Yeah. The thing is that when it jumps to
- 4:36the metal, because it's very high
- 4:38voltage, it will jump on the air to your
- 4:41hand anyway. So, it doesn't matter. Oh,
- 4:44I was shocked. Literally. Now, hold it
- 4:47like this, but hold the metal tight. So,
- 4:49it jumps to the metal and goes to your
- 4:51hand directly, right? Let's see how that
- 4:53feels. Thoughts? I feel like I don't
- 4:56know what's going to be worse. And then
- 4:58I will increase the frequency as well
- 5:00and see if it will be much worse.
- 5:03Okay.
- 5:06You feel it? Not at all. Huh. Nothing.
- 5:09That's the beauty of Yeah. You can go
- 5:12further out. So it's Yeah, that's I
- 5:14don't know if it's getting me though. I
- 5:15can't even tell if it's like No, I I can
- 5:17see the arc jumping. I can see him.
- 5:20It's not very bright. Let me increase
- 5:22the frequency. So hopefully you can see
- 5:24something.
- 5:25Oh. A
- 5:29okay. All right.
- 5:34Were you feeling it? It was like
- 5:36building up. It was like No, no, it's
- 5:39good. Ow. Ow. Okay. Why am I still
- 5:43holding it? Oh, there you go. That's
- 5:45really bright. It's brighter when it
- 5:47goes directly to the screwdriver, isn't
- 5:48it? Yeah. Because instead of splitting
- 5:50in many branches, it just goes in one.
- 5:55Oh, they meet in the middle. Oh wow.
- 5:57Okay. See, you see all the fluff between
- 5:59the arc. It seems like the arc is
- 6:01finding new ways even. Yeah. Like
- 6:03there's electricity going in little bits
- 6:05in here. It looks like you're in space
- 6:06or something. Like so the voltage
- 6:07between this bit and that bit is high
- 6:09enough that arcs are jumping between the
- 6:11arc. Tiny little leaping from here to
- 6:14here. It sounds Yeah, it sounds looks
- 6:16like it. Yeah. Even at 100,000.
- 6:20Yeah, it's done. We need to go. We need
- 6:22to bump it up to a million or something.
- 6:24Yeah. Something just straight to a
- 6:25million
- 6:27million. Yeah. What can we do? 1.75
- 6:30million. Is that the maximum? Is that
- 6:32the best you can give me? That's the
- 6:33best we can do. How you got? I like
- 6:36jumping from 100,000 to 1.75. Should we
- 6:39Should we do it to 500 first? I kind of
- 6:41want to see what that looks like. 1
- 6:42million. 500. What do you reckon? 500.
- 6:45Yeah, we could waste time at 500 if you
- 6:46want. Yeah. All right. The Tesla coil
- 6:50breaks the air first. It doesn't see
- 6:52you. It doesn't see the screwdriver
- 6:54first. It breaks through air. It makes
- 6:56channels through there. And when it
- 6:58comes close enough to you, then it feels
- 7:01like it has to jump to that. Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:04Okay. As you can see, we now have a very
- 7:06long and skinny resolution. 1280 x128,
- 7:08but we are at 456,000
- 7:11frames a second. So, yeah, about four
- 7:13times slower than we just were. We'll
- 7:14see what extra information we can see,
- 7:15but I assume we will have to go faster
- 7:17still. Should I go higher frequency?
- 7:19Yeah. Yeah. I can't really see anything
- 7:20yet. I see.
- 7:28Okay. So, what was hurting me there? It
- 7:30was going so high. I was holding it like
- 7:32this, right? And I moved it further away
- 7:34and it stopped going to the screwdriver.
- 7:36It started going to your hand was too
- 7:38close, huh? Yeah, my hand was too close.
- 7:44Is it Oh, it's not playing, is it? It's
- 7:46not playing. So, I can see why I thought
- 7:49it was so slow. I'm not seeing anything.
- 7:51What it was? Okay. So, now we might be
- 7:54at the point where we can see the
- 7:55frequency maybe. Although, you know what
- 7:57they say, if you want to sample the
- 7:59frequency properly, you have to be at
- 8:00least double the frequency of the Ah,
- 8:03yes. Cuz otherwise you would have it
- 8:04turning on and off within one frame. Oh,
- 8:07yeah. Okay. Here we go.
- 8:12Is it happening multiple times? Oh, it
- 8:15could be. It could be the All right.
- 8:18There you go. So we it might be the fact
- 8:21that it's not exactly double the
- 8:23resonance frequency if we go higher.
- 8:25Yeah, it's definitely blinking on and
- 8:26off after it happens and then it comes
- 8:29on again then back up then down then
- 8:31back up then down. It's obviously like
- 8:33building up charge and then finding a
- 8:35spot to like nail and just releasing all
- 8:37of its energy. It's quite a distance as
- 8:38well. It's like four four or five
- 8:41inches. Yeah. The if you count the
- 8:43length of the arc itself, it's probably
- 8:45like 6 7 in. It's going in curls. Why
- 8:48don't we make the leap? 1.75 million.
- 8:51Just straight up to 1.75. Why not?
- 8:53Skipping a mill. Skip a mill. We've done
- 8:54a mill before. We've never done 1.75
- 8:57million on a Phantom before. That's
- 8:58true. This will be the fastest we've
- 9:00ever filmed on a Phantom. That would be
- 9:02something. Yes. And you're here for it.
- 9:06This camera is now recording so fast
- 9:08it's turning every 1 second of real time
- 9:11into about 19 hours of footage. And
- 9:14we're recording for 2.2 seconds. So,
- 9:17almost a couple of days. Who's going to
- 9:19Who's going to sit here and do that and
- 9:20find the footage? Yeah. Hello. Good
- 9:22luck. Are you ready? I am now taking
- 9:26very casually 1.75 million frames every
- 9:29single second that we're wasting. There
- 9:30you go. You're immediately one of the
- 9:32most photographed people.
- 9:34There is now enough pictures of you to
- 9:36last forever. They're gone now, though.
- 9:39They're gone. I didn't keep them.
- 9:41[Music]
- 9:43A
- 9:51okay.
- 9:53I didn't see anything.
- 9:55We recorded 2,630
- 10:00minutes. Oh my goodness. Does that sound
- 10:02right? Wow. Okay. I'm excited. Yeah, me
- 10:05too. It's the fastest rate you ever done
- 10:07or you ever done? Yeah. I've never done
- 10:09anything.
- 10:12Oh wow.
- 10:14So that you can see it crinking on and
- 10:16off before it even makes it now. You can
- 10:18see the resonance completely. So this is
- 10:21like off, on, off, on, off as it slowly
- 10:25works it way over. So you can definitely
- 10:27see it turning on and off throughout the
- 10:29arc. Ah, that's great. You can probably
- 10:32calculate the resonance frequency using
- 10:34this. Yeah, that one. Even before they
- 10:36make it, we still see a few jumps from
- 10:38the tip as well. Well, we've confirmed
- 10:40it too. The air can blink at 250 kHz. I
- 10:45wasn't expecting that. Can you tell me
- 10:47what is the frame difference between
- 10:49this peak of the voltage to the next
- 10:51one? That way, we can calculate the
- 10:53frequency of resonance. Actually, we can
- 10:54just see it's 9328 9332. It's four
- 10:58frames. Four frames. Four frames. At
- 11:00what speed? 1.75 75 million. Yeah, it
- 11:03shows 430 kHz. Wow. I was expecting
- 11:07closer to 250 kHz but well maybe so it's
- 11:10broken or maybe we are still missing
- 11:12something.
- 11:14Yeah, it could be. Does it get brighter
- 11:16again? Oh no, it is right. Sorry, I have
- 11:19to divide it by two as well. So it's
- 11:22around 220 kHz cuz it's on and off.
- 11:26Yeah, like it's AC so it's bright on the
- 11:29lower negative peak and the positive
- 11:31peak. So
- 11:33yeah, that's right.
- 11:36So the camera and the testicle aren't
- 11:38broken. Good. Everything is good. We're
- 11:40just looking at like pure unedited
- 11:44reality. There's no there's no lies
- 11:46here. It is still, you know, an
- 11:50estimation because still we are not
- 11:51sampling fast enough to very accurately.
- 11:54Yeah, we're still if we're down to
- 11:56counting four frames, we kind of still
- 11:58need to be going fast. We would be good
- 11:59at like 10 million probably. I'm happy
- 12:02we captured the resonance frequency. I
- 12:04didn't expect that to be possible, but
- 12:06I'll keep the full file, the whole
- 12:08thing. Save how many frames? Save
- 12:104,142,484
- 12:13frames. And I would say I'll upload that
- 12:15unedited to the second channel. But um I
- 12:18don't think you can upload a video
- 12:19longer than 12 hours. Make it a
- 12:20three-part video.
- 12:22Yes. So many frames. It's almost
- 12:24onetenth of the pictures people take of
- 12:26themselves on Instagram. One10enth of an
- 12:29Instagram influencer. Yeah. Okay. So
- 12:32Medie is now hooking up his Mark's
- 12:34generator. This is the thing I saw and I
- 12:36just had to know whether all the sparks
- 12:38were happening at the same time or
- 12:39whether there was a imperceivable delay.
- 12:41Do you think this will work or do you
- 12:42think it will blow up somehow?
- 12:45Let me turn. No,
- 12:49this charges. Oops. Oh no. Oh no. Did I
- 12:53break that? Oh no. Damn it. I blew my
- 12:55powers.
- 12:57Jeez.
- 13:01Please. Oh, that's that's that's not
- 13:03good. Now I broke that. Now I'll go
- 13:05solder.
- 13:14Okay, it's holding on. She looks good.
- 13:16Ready? Oh, sitting again. That's not
- 13:19good. Too close. Too powerful. Wow. Is
- 13:23it going through the tape or not? Wow.
- 13:25Fully melted the tape.
- 13:29Oh, it's working. All right, it's
- 13:31working. I'm trying it.
- 13:34Hey, high five. Thank god you did it.
- 13:37Well done.
- 13:40[Music]
- 13:41Wow. Blood. That is so bright. So
- 13:44bright. You like blew out everything
- 13:46over here. Wow. What? What's going on
- 13:50there? So it's off. Okay. And on. Wow.
- 13:55Oh man. Oh, so we need to go faster, I
- 13:58guess. We need to go way faster. Look at
- 14:00how bright that is. Is that all? What is
- 14:02this? Is this the electric fluff again?
- 14:03Look, I don't know if it's the flare
- 14:06from the lens or it might be the fluff.
- 14:07Actually, it could be fluff. Hello, it's
- 14:09Gav from the edit. This is something
- 14:11that we all missed when we were watching
- 14:13on the day just cuz the screen is quite
- 14:14small and you can't notice everything.
- 14:16Medi discovered this watching the
- 14:18footage back when he was making his
- 14:20video. There's actually in the final gap
- 14:23a tiny little streamer just slithering
- 14:26towards the other bead and as soon as it
- 14:28hits it triggers the whole thing. I'm
- 14:29sure Medie will get into that a lot more
- 14:31on his analysis video.
- 14:34Wow. Nice. Okay. Should we go straight
- 14:36to 1 million75?
- 14:39You so keen on like should we set this
- 14:42up like 1.75 or nothing? Yeah. I mean it
- 14:45was so fast it it was fast and bright. I
- 14:48mean I'm not worried about exposure
- 14:49anymore. Yeah. Okay. We are at 875,000
- 14:53which is pretty much as high as we can
- 14:55go in color without it being so skinny
- 14:58we can't see anything. I can hear it.
- 15:02There you go. Okay. Oh, I love your your
- 15:07laugh of glee. Do you think we'll have
- 15:09the
- 15:11sequence of arcs or it's again one shot?
- 15:14Oh, there we go. Okay. Wow. Okay. Uh, so
- 15:19here we go. Playing back. Oh, it's all
- 15:22the same. It's all instantly the same.
- 15:24Bang. It's exactly the same time. Oh.
- 15:26Oh. Oh, wait. It's when it's turning on,
- 15:29right? Maybe that's just turning off or
- 15:30on. Which Which one was it? This is on.
- 15:33Oh, so the last one went first. So,
- 15:35we've got one in the last one for one
- 15:39frame and then all the other ones are
- 15:40on. Wow. They're at different stages
- 15:43though. Like they're less bright here.
- 15:44You can see. And then they're brighter
- 15:46and brighter. Maybe is it less bright
- 15:47here because they're closer? Yeah. Well,
- 15:49maybe it's because it's earlier. It
- 15:50started earlier. So, it's like it gets
- 15:52brighter and brighter as we go. All
- 15:53these capacitors would be at a different
- 15:55voltage level. So, the first one will be
- 15:57a higher voltage and goes down to the
- 15:59last one. Why would that is the
- 16:02question? Why would the last one goes
- 16:03first? And this is a global shutter. I
- 16:06always thought it would start from the
- 16:08other end going forward, but no. Going
- 16:10to bend the sensor up to 1.75 million
- 16:13again.
- 16:14Oh, there you go. Go, go, go, go, go.
- 16:17Nice. Got it. So, our biggest struggle
- 16:18currently is uh finding our shot in the
- 16:22clip. Yeah, we want to react to
- 16:23something, but there's nothing to react
- 16:24to. Yes, we know we've got it.
- 16:27It's in there, but we have to sift
- 16:29through 4.4 million frames. Yeah, you
- 16:31were the one that wanted to go up to
- 16:321.75 million frames a second. Now, look
- 16:34where we're at. Look at this.
- 16:36Oh, there. Did you see it? Are you
- 16:38serious? No. Oh, don't do that to me.
- 16:46Oh, there we go.
- 16:48[Laughter]
- 16:51I mean, oh, sugar. 1.75 million frames a
- 16:55second. Everyone, calm down, everyone.
- 16:58Hold on. Now we will learn.
- 17:02Oh, wow. It's so bright. Look at all the
- 17:04fluff as well. Did it all happen at the
- 17:06same time? Yeah, it looks like it. Damn
- 17:08it. Why are you disappointed in that?
- 17:11The answer is it just happens at the
- 17:12same time. That's within one. What is
- 17:15the time difference there? If if it was
- 17:172 mega frames per second, then it would
- 17:19be like half a microcond. So within 500
- 17:21nconds, they've lit up at least. So
- 17:25there's no lead in that time either. It
- 17:26was just straight up boom. Look how
- 17:27bright that is. We honestly need to be
- 17:29filming at like 50 million frames a
- 17:31second. Yeah. Seems like it's running at
- 17:34a speed of light almost. That has
- 17:36answered my question on my first thought
- 17:39when I saw your video was like, what
- 17:41would a phantom show? Yeah. And it shows
- 17:43this thing a normal camera which
- 17:48just a little bit slower. Yeah. Now, now
- 17:51if you go forward in time, do you see
- 17:53any blinking oscillation or it just goes
- 17:57down like just calms down? Yeah. Just
- 17:59burns the air away. Yeah. It just turns
- 18:01off for another 4 hours and then
- 18:06Well, that's cool. That was cool. Yeah.
- 18:08We were able to see. We learned We
- 18:10learned something. We learned that
- 18:12electricity is really fast. Yeah, it
- 18:13could be. Could be faster than we can
- 18:16manage. Here's another couple of
- 18:17attempts that we didn't watch on the
- 18:19day. Both of them display activity in
- 18:22the final gap. Well, that was some
- 18:24incredibly fast footage with some
- 18:27incredibly fast action. Yeah. Making it
- 18:29seem like relatively normal speed
- 18:31footage. That's a good point. Well, I'm
- 18:33just happy my circuit was able to last
- 18:35as long as it did. It was stressful. It
- 18:38only blew up what, twice? No, I think it
- 18:40was three times. Three times. Yeah.
- 18:41Power supply one circuit and power
- 18:43supply. This bit that bit. Yeah. And
- 18:45that kept smoking. What?
- 18:48It was just really interesting to see
- 18:50the path that electricity chooses
- 18:52depending on the previous spark and like
- 18:55the temperature around it and the
- 18:57ionization of the air. It's incredible.
- 18:59Yeah. Well, actually what I learned was
- 19:01that I I didn't know air can blink that
- 19:03fast at 250 or 300 kHz. That's
- 19:06surprising. Yeah, we actually saw the
- 19:09frequency. Yeah, I I love that you guys
- 19:11learned all that. And I learned that hot
- 19:12air rises
- 19:15and that's why electricity goes. I
- 19:17thought that would be kind of obvious if
- 19:20that's what I was like, why does it
- 19:22always go up like that? Yeah. I feel
- 19:23like you knew it and then you discover
- 19:24this. It's like, oh, these are the same.
- 19:26Yeah, I applied it. Yeah. Yeah. There
- 19:27you go. Well, I had fun. Thank you very
- 19:29much for watching that video. Make sure
- 19:31you subscribe to Medie's channel. It's
- 19:32one of my favorite channels. And
- 19:34subscribe to these guys as well. And we
- 19:35have Yeah, we have a channel. It's
- 19:37you're watching it. So, thanks for
- 19:39watching it and we'll see you next time.

- 19:53watch it. I'm sure it will come out
- 19:54soon. So, make sure you subscribe to him
- 19:56as
