- 0:00I want to officially announce that
- 0:02after a month of deep reflection, I
- 0:04remembered I had a YouTube channel.
- 0:07Hello everyone, and welcome once again
- 0:10to the post-vacation return of
- 0:11Campamento Web. I’m Emilio García,
- 0:14and this time I’m going to present a
- 0:16new SEO news update where we’ll
- 0:18discover the latest news from the web
- 0:20positioning sector. It’s been a while
- 0:23since I talked about this, and I was
- 0:24really looking forward to it. Let’s
- 0:25start. I don’t know who stayed on
- 0:30duty at Google during August, but the
- 0:32person with the update launch button
- 0:33certainly didn’t go on vacation for
- 0:35nothing. While half the sector is
- 0:39trying to disconnect with a drink on
- 0:41the beach or simply not even knowing
- 0:42what day of the week it is, Google
- 0:44thought it was a fantastic time to
- 0:46launch a new spam update. Specifically,
- 0:50this Tuesday, August 18th. Thanks,
- 0:52Google, was there really no other time
- 0:54of year? You could have launched it in
- 0:57October or November, but no, better in
- 0:59August so we can check Search Console
- 1:01calmly from the lounge chair. Jokes
- 1:04aside, we are looking at a global
- 1:06update that affects all countries and
- 1:08all languages. It will only take a few
- 1:11days to roll out completely. And this
- 1:14last point is important because we’ve
- 1:16usually had much longer spam updates,
- 1:18while Google expects to finish this one
- 1:20relatively quickly. And watch out,
- 1:24because this is the third spam update
- 1:25we’ve had this year alone, the second
- 1:27consecutive one, and it comes after two
- 1:29spam updates that, at least in my
- 1:31experience and what we see on social
- 1:33media, haven't really revolutionized
- 1:34the SERPs much. Google hasn’t
- 1:37announced any new spam policies to go
- 1:39along with it, though. They are simply
- 1:41reinforcing existing ones, such as
- 1:44scaled content abuse, site reputation
- 1:46abuse, expired domains, and since May,
- 1:49attempts to manipulate AI responses
- 1:51within AI Overviews and AI mode.
- 1:54We’ll see if this third spam update
- 1:56continues along those lines or targets
- 1:59some other type of abuse. Remember,
- 2:02also, that a recovery from a spam
- 2:04update doesn’t have to happen
- 2:05immediately after fixing the problem,
- 2:07because their systems can take months
- 2:09to reconsider a site as compliant with
- 2:11their policies. So anyway, happy August
- 2:14to everyone. Sunscreen, water, a cap,
- 2:17and Search Console—the four
- 2:18essentials for surviving the summer as
- 2:20an SEO. Although, I also have to tell
- 2:23you that if you want to put the icing
- 2:24on the cake, there’s also SearchLab.
- 2:27You know that’s our training program
- 2:28for Geo SEO and AI; you have the link
- 2:30in the description. And speaking of
- 2:33spam and strategies that can stop
- 2:35working overnight, let's move on to
- 2:37ChatGPT because there is a very
- 2:39important change related to Reddit. You
- 2:42know that for a very long time, Reddit
- 2:44has been one of ChatGPT's favorite
- 2:46sources. This led certain websites to
- 2:50find it interesting to do a sort of
- 2:53parasite SEO, but focused on AI. In
- 2:57other words, instead of trying to get
- 2:59your own website cited directly by
- 3:01ChatGPT, you could create content
- 3:03within Reddit, leverage the huge
- 3:05authority and presence of that domain,
- 3:07and try to appear in the AI's responses
- 3:10thanks to your content on Reddit. It
- 3:13looked really good. Well, be careful
- 3:15because this strategy has just lost a
- 3:17lot of its appeal. Prompt Watch has
- 3:20analyzed the sources used by ChatGPT
- 3:23Search and has detected a massive drop
- 3:25for Reddit, a truly massive one. To
- 3:28give you an idea, between July 18 and
- 3:30August 7, Reddit accounted for an
- 3:33average of approximately 3.8%of all
- 3:35citations analyzed. That was huge for a
- 3:39single domain, but starting August 14,
- 3:41it plummeted below 1%, and between the
- 3:4414th and 17th, the average stayed at
- 3:47about 0.5%. We are talking about a
- 3:51relative drop of more than 86%. I mean,
- 3:55practically overnight, Reddit went from
- 3:57being one of the leading domains in
- 4:00ChatGPT's sources to having a much
- 4:02smaller presence. And what's more, it
- 4:05seems to be a phenomenon especially
- 4:07pronounced within ChatGPT, because
- 4:09while Reddit has also lost some
- 4:11presence in Google's AI Overviews and
- 4:13AI mode, the decline there has been
- 4:15much more gradual and much less
- 4:17dramatic. What conclusion do I draw
- 4:19from all this? Well, the first is that
- 4:22if you were using Reddit mainly as
- 4:24parasite SEO to get citations within
- 4:26ChatGPT, I would monitor the strategy
- 4:28very closely, because right now it
- 4:30seems much less effective than it was
- 4:33just two weeks ago. But the second
- 4:36conclusion seems even more important to
- 4:38me, which is not to build your entire
- 4:40SEO strategy depending on a third-party
- 4:42platform, because this is exactly what
- 4:44can happen. Today, ChatGPT loves Reddit
- 4:47. Tomorrow it changes how it selects
- 4:50sources, and suddenly all the work you
- 4:52have done there is worth less. It's
- 4:54like a Google update, really, but
- 4:56within AI. So if your only reason for
- 4:59using Reddit was that ChatGPT cited it
- 5:01a lot, be careful because that seems to
- 5:03have calmed down quite a bit. And we
- 5:05now move on to a Google tool that this
- 5:07time actually brings a new feature that
- 5:09I really like. Google Trends is
- 5:12launching a new experience within the
- 5:14explore tab, featuring interactive maps
- 5:16and much more visual regional analysis.
- 5:21The idea is to help us better
- 5:22understand not just which country
- 5:24people are searching for a term in, but
- 5:26in which specific region, providing
- 5:28better regional segmentation. This
- 5:32might seem like a small visual
- 5:33improvement—a little map with regions
- 5:35and colors—but for e-commerce and
- 5:37certain local SEO projects, it can be
- 5:39tremendously useful since we’re used
- 5:41to analyzing keywords at a national
- 5:42level. We see that a search is growing
- 5:46in Spain and we automatically think, "
- 5:47Perfect, there’s more demand." But
- 5:50that demand doesn’t necessarily have
- 5:51to be growing equally everywhere.
- 5:53Imagine, for example, an e-commerce
- 5:55store that sells heating and cooling
- 5:57products. A specific product might be
- 6:00skyrocketing in Andalusia or the
- 6:02Valencian Community, yet have
- 6:04significantly less interest in other
- 6:06regions like Asturias. This allows you
- 6:09to prioritize campaigns, analyze where
- 6:12it makes more sense to boost certain
- 6:14categories, create truly useful content
- 6:17for a specific area, or even adapt
- 6:20promotions and advertising campaigns
- 6:22based on where demand is rising. Also,
- 6:25remember that Google Trends doesn't
- 6:27give us absolute search volume: it
- 6:29shows us relative interest. So, I would
- 6:32use it to detect patterns and trends,
- 6:34but then I would cross-reference that
- 6:36information with other data we have,
- 6:38such as click numbers from Search
- 6:40Console or estimated volume from SEO
- 6:42tools. So, good for Google Trends—a
- 6:45bit of joy after the spam update. We
- 6:48take the bitter with the sweet. We now
- 6:51continue with some quite surprising
- 6:53news related to digital audience
- 6:54measurement in Spain. Comscore is
- 6:58closing its Spanish subsidiary after
- 7:00approximately 15 years of operations,
- 7:03affecting media outlets, agencies, and
- 7:05companies that use these metrics to
- 7:07compare audiences and make advertising
- 7:10decisions. In fact, Comscore was set to
- 7:14take over from GFK, which had held that
- 7:15status for the last few years. For now,
- 7:19it doesn't look like Spain will be left
- 7:22without a solution, because fortunately
- 7:24, GFK has announced that it guarantees
- 7:27the continuity of its service through
- 7:292026 and 2027, regardless of how this
- 7:31Comscore subsidiary closure in Spain is
- 7:34resolved. However, it is quite striking
- 7:38to see how in just a few weeks we've
- 7:39gone from "Comscore is the recommended
- 7:41measurer in Spain again" to "Comscore
- 7:43is closing in Spain." I mean, not even
- 7:46a core update has that much volatility.
- 7:48And to finish, let's talk about YouTube
- 7:51, because this news affects me directly
- 7:53, it affects anyone who has a channel,
- 7:55and probably starting next week, we
- 7:58will all be able to brag that our
- 8:00videos have more views. Perfect, right?
- 8:04Look, YouTube is going to change the
- 8:05way it counts public views, especially
- 8:07for long-form videos. Starting August
- 8:1124th, a view will be counted from the
- 8:13moment the video starts playing, from
- 8:15the very first second. And you might
- 8:17say, "But Emilio, when I click on a
- 8:19YouTube video, doesn't it count as a
- 8:21view from the start?" Well, it turns
- 8:23out it doesn't. According to sources
- 8:26like TechCrunch, it's estimated that
- 8:28for a view to count on YouTube, you had
- 8:30to watch for at least 30 seconds,
- 8:32although YouTube hasn't officially
- 8:33commented or revealed any figures. This
- 8:37criterion will be applied globally and
- 8:39to all YouTube formats: Shorts,
- 8:41long-form videos, and live streams. In
- 8:44fact, Shorts already had a similar
- 8:46system since 2025, but now YouTube
- 8:48wants to unify the criteria for all
- 8:50content, including long-form, so public
- 8:53video views will grow faster. So if you
- 8:57check your channel on August 24th and
- 8:59suddenly think, "Wow, my content is
- 9:01performing so well lately," I'm sorry
- 9:03to burst your bubble. Maybe it is you.
- 9:06But maybe YouTube just changed how they
- 9:08measure it. Now, this doesn't mean
- 9:11we're going to earn more money. I wish.
- 9:14No, YouTube has made it clear that this
- 9:16change to the public counter doesn't
- 9:18affect creator revenue or the criteria
- 9:20for the Partner Program. Beyond this,
- 9:24the platform will still have
- 9:26view-related metrics inside YouTube
- 9:28Studio so we can differentiate between
- 9:30someone who just started watching and
- 9:33someone who actually kept watching. To
- 9:37me, this distinction is going to be
- 9:39increasingly important because a public
- 9:41view is becoming a more generous metric
- 9:43. If a video starts playing and the
- 9:46person leaves almost instantly, we
- 9:48still get another view. So when we
- 9:51analyze our own videos, we'll need to
- 9:54pay even more attention to watch time,
- 9:58retention, and real user behavior,
- 10:00instead of just looking at the big view
- 10:04count. And this, as you can imagine,
- 10:06also affects brands. If a company wants
- 10:09to sponsor a creator and only asks how
- 10:11many views they have, comparisons
- 10:13before and after August 24th will be
- 10:16misleading because we won't be talking
- 10:18about the exact same metric. In fact, I
- 10:22think the most obvious consequence is
- 10:24that the public view count will be a
- 10:26bit closer to what we see on platforms
- 10:28like TikTok or Instagram, where
- 10:29sometimes it feels like view counts are
- 10:31being given away. But anyway, YouTube
- 10:34says that what it really wants is to
- 10:36eliminate the confusion that existed
- 10:38from using different systems depending
- 10:40on the format, so that we creators can
- 10:42better understand our true reach. I'm
- 10:44happy with that. If YouTube wants to
- 10:46add more views for me, I'm certainly
- 10:47not going to complain. That said,
- 10:49that’s all for this week's episode of
- 10:51SEO News. I hope you enjoyed a few days
- 10:53of disconnection, and if not, that you
- 10:55get to enjoy them soon. As always,
- 10:58thank you very much for reaching the
- 10:59end of this video podcast, and we'll
- 11:01see and hear each other next week with
- 11:02more SEO and artificial intelligence
- 11:04content. See you next time.
