- 0:00Edward Snowden the former NSA and CIA
- 0:02employee who stole more than 1.5 million
- 0:05classified documents is being sued by
- 0:07the US government at issue whether or
- 0:11not the publication of his new
- 0:12autobiography violates a nondisclosure
- 0:14agreement and joining us to explain all
- 0:17of this Yahoo Finance's michael kelly
- 0:19who's been following the story and the
- 0:21issue that the government's wing over is
- 0:23the money that might be raised by the
- 0:26sale of this book right yeah it's a it's
- 0:27a civil suit about breach of contract
- 0:29and fiduciary obligations so they're not
- 0:33they say in the in the introduction that
- 0:34they're not trying to restrain the
- 0:36publication or the distribution of the
- 0:38book they say that he breached his
- 0:40contract and in that contract it means
- 0:42that they have a right to profits and
- 0:44royalties from that book so he is a
- 0:48defendant the publisher Macmillan is a
- 0:51defendant only so that they can try to
- 0:54get this money from the sale and you
- 0:58also looked into what he's doing now
- 1:01besides writing a book and we don't
- 1:04really know so the the the book is
- 1:06fascinating that because it kind of
- 1:09abruptly ends right when he leaves the
- 1:11airport in Moscow
- 1:12August 1st 2013 and then there's like a
- 1:15chapter about how he got married and
- 1:17sometimes he goes to museums but there's
- 1:19about six years and changed that we
- 1:21don't really he doesn't really fill us
- 1:23in on that so yeah that's a big gap in
- 1:25even even an autobiography or even a
- 1:27biography is he a spy that intends harm
- 1:31to the United States he's a he's a
- 1:35trained technical spy he was a CIA
- 1:37technician as he because we don't know
- 1:41anything about basically since he
- 1:44stepped off a plane in June 23rd 2013
- 1:47there's a question mark about who his
- 1:51bodyguards are his Russian lawyer says
- 1:52he has bought his permanent security who
- 1:55here he worked in Russia yeah the the he
- 1:58keeps he over a dozen times he said that
- 2:00Snowden had a job for an IT company but
- 2:02no one seems to know what that IT
- 2:04company is so there's a lot of question
- 2:07marks about the last six years and and
- 2:10you know that's what they are they're
- 2:12question marks it's
- 2:13intrigued I'm and in some of the his
- 2:15recent interviews he said he wants to
- 2:17come home but how likely is that to
- 2:19happen
- 2:19so he's been saying this for years since
- 2:232014 about he would come home on the
- 2:26condition you would get a fair trial but
- 2:28he can't get a fair trial because of the
- 2:30Espionage Act and that that's true to a
- 2:33point but the thing that people forget
- 2:35about if Snowden could come home is the
- 2:39fact that the Russians have a say in
- 2:41that and he knows a lot about how they
- 2:44treat their special guests so they have
- 2:48little incentive to tell California you
- 2:50can check in but you can never leave
- 2:52that's right all right Michael Kelly
