- 0:03Christ is risen, truly, gloriously,
- 0:07eternally
- 0:08risen. And because of that, we who
- 0:11believe are joyful,
- 0:15unafraid, and filled with undying hope.
- 0:20Those three marks, joy, courage, and
- 0:24hope, have always been the unmistakable
- 0:28sign of a true
- 0:31Christian. They don't come from a
- 0:34comfortable
- 0:35life. They don't depend on circumstances
- 0:38or
- 0:40feelings. No, they come from a truth
- 0:42that changed
- 0:44history and changes us today.
- 0:48Jesus Christ has conquered
- 0:51death. The tomb is
- 0:54empty. And because he lives, we shall
- 0:58live
- 1:00too. But the question is, why is the
- 1:03Christian so joyful even in
- 1:07sorrow? Why is a Christian unafraid even
- 1:10when the world grows dark?
- 1:13Why does a Christian cling to hope even
- 1:17when all seems
- 1:20lost? Well, because Jesus Christ is
- 1:25alive. Many figures have shaped
- 1:29history, some for good, some for
- 1:34evil. Carl Mark's body lies in a tomb in
- 1:38London.
- 1:40Nichi's body lies buried in
- 1:44Luten. Muhammad's body lies buried in
- 1:48Medina. Buddha's buried in
- 1:52Pingyang. And even Lazarus who was resus
- 1:55resuscitated and raised by Jesus
- 1:58eventually died
- 2:01again. But go to
- 2:03Jerusalem. Go to the tomb of Christ and
- 2:06you will find something stunning.
- 2:09It's
- 2:11empty. And it's been empty for over
- 2:132,000
- 2:15years because only one man in all of
- 2:18history has defeated death forever. Only
- 2:22one man rose by his own power not to die
- 2:28again, but to live forever in glory.
- 2:32That man, Jesus Christ, the son of God.
- 2:37Why could he
- 2:39rise? Because he is not only a man. He
- 2:43is God from God, light from light, true
- 2:46God from true
- 2:48God. And because he rose, he made a
- 2:51startling promise to all of us. Yes,
- 2:54even to you and
- 2:56me. He made us a promise that if you are
- 2:59united to me through baptism, you shall
- 3:02live with me forever.
- 3:05And this is not
- 3:07poetry, some beautiful language. This is
- 3:10a
- 3:13promise. And it is that promise that
- 3:16gives us that inner joy, that gives us
- 3:18that
- 3:19courage and our enduring
- 3:24hope. In our first reading today from
- 3:26the Acts of the Apostle, Peter stands
- 3:28before the world and he says something
- 3:32extraordinary.
- 3:34He says, "We are
- 3:37witnesses. We ate and drank with him
- 3:40after he rose from the
- 3:43dead." Peter didn't believe easily
- 3:47either. He ran to the tomb. He doubted
- 3:51the women. He needed to see, to hear, to
- 3:55touch the risen Lord.
- 3:58But once he did, he never stopped
- 4:02proclaiming
- 4:05him. He's not telling us a
- 4:08myth, some nice madeup
- 4:11story. What he's doing is he's giving us
- 4:15testimony. He's saying, "I saw him. I
- 4:19lived with him. I failed
- 4:22him. And he came back to me, and now
- 4:25he's alive.
- 4:28And now Peter says to all of us and he
- 4:31says he commissions
- 4:33us because here's the
- 4:36truth. You will not meet the risen
- 4:39Christ by
- 4:41accident. You won't encounter him just
- 4:44because you've heard the story since
- 4:48childhood. You have to go
- 4:51looking. But not in the tombs.
- 4:55Why do you seek the living among the
- 4:57dead? We're
- 4:59told if your fail if your faith today
- 5:03feels
- 5:05stale, if your prayer life feels
- 5:08shallow, if your experience of God is
- 5:11more memory than
- 5:13presence, faith in the risen Christ is
- 5:16not passive. It is a
- 5:20pursuit. It's a search that begins with
- 5:23love.
- 5:25The kind of love Mary had that made her
- 5:29rise early before the
- 5:32sun. The kind of love that kept Peter
- 5:35from staying stuck in
- 5:37guilt. The kind of love that leads to
- 5:40new
- 5:42life. So if you've lost sight of him, do
- 5:46not
- 5:47despair. Seek him
- 5:49again. But don't look among the dead.
- 5:53Don't look in the old cold places of
- 5:55guilt and indifference. He's not
- 5:58there. He's risen and he's going ahead
- 6:02of you. Seek him in the places where
- 6:05life
- 6:06pulses, where the gospel is not just
- 6:09heard, but that that where the gospel is
- 6:11lived. Seek him among the poor, the
- 6:14joyful, the reconciled, the
- 6:16courageous. Seek him in the breaking of
- 6:18the bread.
- 6:20Seek him in the fire of your own longing
- 6:23heart. Peter saw him and testified to
- 6:27this. Mary heard him call her by name.
- 6:32And now the same risen Jesus comes to
- 6:34call you on this Easter
- 6:37Sunday. To follow Christ doesn't mean
- 6:40life will be easy. Jesus never promise
- 6:44us an easy life.
- 6:46He did not promise us riches or comfort
- 6:49or an escape from suffering. What he did
- 6:51was he promised us something
- 6:54greater. Be faithful to me. Be faithful
- 6:58to me and you will rise with
- 7:01me. That's the hope that made the
- 7:04martyrs
- 7:05brave. Those early Christians that gave
- 7:08their
- 7:09lives. The hope that led missionaries to
- 7:12risk everything to preach the gospel.
- 7:15That's the hope that brings you here
- 7:19today. And this is your mission
- 7:22now. Because you see, people don't come
- 7:24to the faith by clever arguments or even
- 7:27by powerful
- 7:29sermons. They come to faith because
- 7:32someone showed them what faith really
- 7:34looks
- 7:36like. And that someone needs to be
- 7:40you. You now are witnesses to this
- 7:43truth.
- 7:45You now must be
- 7:48apostles. So my brothers and sisters,
- 7:51live in such a way that makes others
- 7:53wonder what gives them such joy. I want
- 7:58what you have. Teach me about this
- 8:02Jesus. Why are you so
- 8:05fearless? Why does this hope where does
- 8:08this hope come from?
- 8:11Well, it comes from a person, not a
- 8:14memory, not a myth. A person who lives
- 8:17today, Jesus Christ. And that's what we
- 8:21celebrate this morning. Not only that
- 8:23Christ rose from the grave, but that he
- 8:26will rise, that we will rise with him
- 8:30because this is our feast day, too.
- 8:34So be joyful, be unafraid, be filled
- 8:38with hope because the grave is empty.
- 8:41Christ is risen. Christ has been
- 8:44victorious. Amen. Allelujah.
