- 0:00Kent State is a very renowned education
- 0:02program they set up their teachers to
- 0:05succeed KSU always has had an excellent
- 0:09reputation and tradition for their early
- 0:12childhood education program right now I
- 0:14have over a thousand hours in the
- 0:16classroom already before you know just
- 0:18as a graduate I feel as though I have
- 0:20gained valuable information and
- 0:23resources to become a successful teacher
- 0:25when I graduated I felt like a prepared
- 0:27teacher
- 0:28Kent State offering the IB VoIP
- 0:30certificate for their early education
- 0:32students is a great opportunity there's
- 0:35very few I think there's actually 10
- 0:36colleges in the world that offer that
- 0:38certificate it gives them an advantage
- 0:40that many students aren't going to have
- 0:43especially in the United States but the
- 0:45primary's program is just best practice
- 0:47teaching so whether those students end
- 0:49up in teaching in an IB school or not
- 0:52they are learning best practices that
- 0:54they can take into any school at Kent
- 0:56program is based on this inquiry based
- 0:59learning where children give input into
- 1:03what they want to learn and how they
- 1:04want to learn and I beats philosophy is
- 1:07the same way they're about inquiry Intel
- 1:09centers based learning the International
- 1:13Baccalaureate program has four different
- 1:15programs
- 1:15PYP is the primary earth program the
- 1:18primary program is pre-k - typically
- 1:21fifth or sixth grade the PYP program
- 1:23benefits children because it is teaching
- 1:27them to be problem solvers and inquires
- 1:29it's teaching it's taking all the best
- 1:32practices and kind of holding it all
- 1:34together I've learned that it allows
- 1:37children a new way to think and a new
- 1:40way to learn it's discovering and it's
- 1:42giving students opportunities to find
- 1:44them on their own and rather than just
- 1:45speaking at them
- 1:47we're not just teaching to raise test
- 1:49scores but also teaching in ways and
- 1:52planning our
- 1:54trimming ways that the aims are geared
- 1:57towards meaningful learning experiences
- 2:00I don't see my students as their scores
- 2:03a standardized test I see them as
- 2:05someone who can discover what they're
- 2:08looking for they can find answers
- 2:09themselves they can ask questions in my
- 2:12block for classroom we did a lot with
- 2:15the learner profile attributes
- 2:18reflective carrying open minded and
- 2:22there's other ones and we presented the
- 2:25attributes in a way through books and
- 2:27literacy and read Aloud's I was in a
- 2:29kindergarten classroom and I would read
- 2:31a story and four five and six-year-olds
- 2:33to be able to sit down and talk about a
- 2:34main character being an Inquirer or
- 2:36being reflective or a risk taker it was
- 2:38really inspiring to have such rich
- 2:40conversations with five and
- 2:42six-year-olds you know respective and
- 2:44open-minded and principled those are big
- 2:46words for kindergarten students but they
- 2:48really started to grasp the idea and as
- 2:52they began to learn how to read they
- 2:54would pull those attributes into the
- 2:57characters themselves say well that's
- 2:59not a very friendly lion he stepped on
- 3:01the mouse there's many components to ID
- 3:04PYP part of it is action so having
- 3:07students take action outside of school
- 3:10within school but rather than teacher
- 3:13saying we're gonna do a bake sale and
- 3:15raise money and give it to this charity
- 3:17we're asking the students to come up
- 3:20with those plans international
- 3:21mindedness means that kids are open to
- 3:23new perspectives they're open to new
- 3:26possibilities new cultures it helps the
- 3:29students to learn about these cultures
- 3:31and it helps them to be more accepting
- 3:33of the people around them teaching the
- 3:35kids not to just think about where they
- 3:37are but the whole world and what's going
- 3:38on and how those people are similar yet
- 3:40different the pyp program is important
- 3:43to me because it's a unique way for
- 3:46students to learn it's a unique way for
- 3:48them to explore the world around them
- 3:52get used to you know being inquisitive
- 3:55and thinking outside the box my
- 3:57expectations now are really too for
- 3:59children to develop their own learning
- 4:01rather than me just teaching out with
- 4:03them to be curious about the world
- 4:04around them and to wonder why and really
- 4:07investigate the world I want them to
- 4:09develop that passion in life and really
- 4:11evolve their thinking around that as I
- 4:14became to become a part of my teaching
- 4:19career later on it really was an easy
- 4:22fit for me because of several ways that
- 4:27Kent State had prepared me
- 4:34you
