- 0:02Okay, now recording.
- 0:06Um
- 0:07Okay.
- 0:10All right.
- 0:11Hi River, it's good to see you again.
- 0:13How have um things been since we last
- 0:16met?
- 0:17>> Hi, yeah. I'm so happy to be here again.
- 0:20Just kind of um feeling the same
- 0:22symptoms. So, I've been really looking
- 0:23forward to seeing you. Um
- 0:25just still, you know, my mind is racing.
- 0:29Um
- 0:30kind of still doing stuff, you know,
- 0:32busy with work and hiking and all the
- 0:35things, but I just can't seem to turn my
- 0:37mind off at night. Like I'm not sleeping
- 0:39good and just kind of my uneasy stomach
- 0:43problems that I've still been having and
- 0:46not really sure why.
- 0:49>> Okay, yeah. I can
- 0:52um understand that this is probably
- 0:55starting to feel frustrating
- 0:57for you that not understanding why it
- 1:00keeps happening.
- 1:02>> Yeah. Do you have any advice or do you
- 1:05think
- 1:07something's wrong or
- 1:09>> Um well, I know this has been coming up
- 1:12um a few times in our sessions now. So,
- 1:16um and then as I hear you talk about
- 1:19about it, I can feel that frustration,
- 1:21too. And um I really want to help you
- 1:24make sense of all of it. So, yeah, if it
- 1:28would be okay um for me to share what I
- 1:30think might be happening?
- 1:32>> Yeah, definitely. I love that.
- 1:34>> Okay. So, um what you've been describing
- 1:38so far with like the racing thoughts and
- 1:41um feeling sick to your stomach, um
- 1:44unable to sleep at night, feeling wired,
- 1:47uh that can all happen when we're
- 1:49experiencing
- 1:50anxiety or stress. And um
- 1:55you know, you've mentioned that you've
- 1:56had a lot of change happen recently in a
- 1:59short period of time. And some of that
- 2:02change has been great. Some of that has
- 2:05been harder. And even if some of the
- 2:07change is um
- 2:10has been fun or exciting, it's still
- 2:13uh
- 2:14something that the mind and body has to
- 2:15adjust to.
- 2:17And so, um you can totally love being
- 2:20here and still be experiencing some
- 2:23stress with all that you have to adjust
- 2:26to. Um
- 2:27they don't necessarily cancel each other
- 2:29out. So,
- 2:31yeah, when we're dealing with stress and
- 2:33change, um we could start to notice it
- 2:35in both our mind and our body. And that
- 2:38could be why you're feeling both those
- 2:40mental and physical symptoms.
- 2:44>> Yeah, that makes sense. I've definitely
- 2:46gone through so many changes and
- 2:50um
- 2:51it's just been such a big adjustment, um
- 2:53but exciting. And like just
- 2:57I don't know. It's just like all the
- 2:58things and it kind of makes sense that
- 3:00that would, you know, affect
- 3:02my stomach or like just these racing
- 3:04thoughts. Um
- 3:06I'm just I'm like, "How can I change
- 3:09this? Or like, what kind of
- 3:11what can I do to make this lessen? Cuz
- 3:14it's kind of on an intensity scale, it's
- 3:16probably close to a nine, you know? So,
- 3:19I just want to bring it down a notch.
- 3:22>> Okay.
- 3:23Um well, are you still um
- 3:26experiencing them
- 3:29pretty much at night?
- 3:31>> Yeah, it's mostly at night. Like during
- 3:33the day, I think my mind is just so
- 3:35preoccupied with
- 3:36planning the next hike or, you know,
- 3:38going to work and meeting up with
- 3:40friends, that doesn't really affect me
- 3:42until
- 3:43at the end of the night I'm at home and
- 3:45I'm just
- 3:46maybe it's just being in my small place
- 3:48where I live where it's just like, you
- 3:50know, in like a a small apartment
- 3:54that makes me feel like that, but I
- 3:58think it's just everything from the day,
- 4:00you know, hitting me at once.
- 4:02>> Yeah, definitely. Um and like you said,
- 4:04you know, during the day you're you're
- 4:06pretty busy, so your mind's preoccupied.
- 4:09And um
- 4:11yeah, it's focusing on whatever you're
- 4:13doing. So, when it comes to the evening
- 4:16and less is going on and everything
- 4:18starts to slow down, then like your mind
- 4:20has that that space to start to think
- 4:24about all that you're dealing with.
- 4:26Um so yeah, once those thoughts start
- 4:30start going, then the body can get
- 4:32worked up, too, and that could explain
- 4:35why you're experiencing both those um
- 4:38mind and body symptoms specifically at
- 4:41night and not so much in the day.
- 4:43Um
- 4:44and I know we talked about this before,
- 4:46but I just want to I'm just curious if
- 4:48anything has changed since then, but
- 4:50what um when your mind is racing at
- 4:53night, what are some of the things you
- 4:56find yourself thinking about?
- 4:59>> Yeah,
- 5:00um
- 5:02I think just, you know, like where I fit
- 5:04in here, like, you know, meeting all
- 5:06these new people.
- 5:08Um you know, I'm trying to like
- 5:10possibly, you know, some guys I've been
- 5:13thinking about dating a little bit. Um
- 5:15so, some, you know, people that are
- 5:17showing interest to date me.
- 5:19Thinking about that and, you know, kind
- 5:21of what the next chapter is like as far
- 5:24as
- 5:25as I'm getting into my, you know, later
- 5:2720s and
- 5:29my purpose in life, where, you know, if
- 5:32I'm going to stay here long term or
- 5:33like, you know, just a long term picture
- 5:36in a way. Um I think I've just been so
- 5:38caught up, you know, all the excitement.
- 5:40A lot of people my age are just having
- 5:43fun and um but I definitely have that in
- 5:46the back of my mind where, you know, I
- 5:48do want to be more serious down the
- 5:51road, you know, um
- 5:53So, I think just
- 5:55thinking of
- 5:56um
- 5:57you know, long-term goals as well as
- 6:01this current, you know, fun stage I'm
- 6:03in.
- 6:06If that makes sense.
- 6:07>> [laughter]
- 6:08>> Yeah, and um you know, hearing you
- 6:12hearing you mention all of that and then
- 6:13that's a lot of the things that you've
- 6:15mentioned before, too. So, I can tell
- 6:17that that's all still
- 6:19um on your mind.
- 6:21Um but yeah, those are all
- 6:24things that do kind of make you feel
- 6:26some pressure in in your life and
- 6:29uncertainty and sometimes that can feel
- 6:32heavy and um
- 6:36be frustrating at times, too, especially
- 6:38if you're you're expecting some of that
- 6:40to
- 6:41kind of start happening right now and
- 6:44maybe they're not. Um so, I can
- 6:46understand why you're feeling uneasy at
- 6:48night and
- 6:50um
- 6:52especially when you're thinking about
- 6:54that.
- 6:54Oh, I'm sorry.
- 6:56>> Sorry. Yeah, I was just like wanting to
- 6:57add on. I think it's a lot of pressure
- 6:59maybe from my parents back home and like
- 7:01people, you know,
- 7:02the older generation is kind of like I
- 7:05don't want to say judging me, but
- 7:07you know, I'm the pressure to fit in
- 7:09here and like meet all these new friends
- 7:11and people and like the local culture,
- 7:14but also um
- 7:16you know, my traditional like small town
- 7:19roots where I'm from.
- 7:21I think maybe that's like a pressure
- 7:23point as well. Like they just want me to
- 7:27have this long-term plan and you know,
- 7:29it's just kind of the stage of life I'm
- 7:31in and
- 7:32I don't know. I just want to find
- 7:33solutions for like my stomach and the
- 7:35sleep and
- 7:37just things to work on to help that go
- 7:40down a notch.
- 7:42>> Yeah. Yeah. Well, I can definitely feel
- 7:45how heavy that load is for you. Um that
- 7:47is a lot of pressure.
- 7:49Um
- 7:50and uh especially when you're thinking
- 7:52about it and carrying that load every
- 7:54day uh
- 7:55day after day without
- 7:57maybe even knowing why. But,
- 8:00um
- 8:02yeah, so I can tell that this is
- 8:04frustrating for you and that you're
- 8:06wanting to find some relief from those
- 8:08symptoms. Um so, if you're interested, I
- 8:11can recommend a really simple breathing
- 8:14technique that might help you at least
- 8:16settle your body
- 8:21>> Yeah, that'd be great.
- 8:22>> Yeah, okay.
- 8:24Um it's very simple. You just need to
- 8:26remember four and six. Um you could take
- 8:30a slow inhale for 4 seconds and then a
- 8:36longer exhale for 6 seconds. And you
- 8:40just repeat that a couple times. Um I'd
- 8:42suggest maybe three times. And um since
- 8:48you know, you're you're Are you still
- 8:49journaling?
- 8:51>> A little bit. Yeah, I'm not really
- 8:54into journaling too much, but I've been
- 8:56trying to.
- 8:58>> Okay. Well, maybe
- 9:00um
- 9:01you could try adding in the the
- 9:03breathing and maybe do like a couple of
- 9:06those breaths before
- 9:08um trying to journal and maybe that
- 9:10might get you in you know, a different
- 9:12state of mind to like get some thoughts
- 9:14out um
- 9:16and then
- 9:17some couple couple more breaths after
- 9:20um to settle and just see what you
- 9:23notice.
- 9:25>> Okay, great. Yeah, I really I am a
- 9:27pretty active person, so I think
- 9:29um I'd like that better than journaling.
- 9:32>> Okay. Okay, great. All right. Well, so
- 9:34we'll give that a try and
- 9:36um are coming to the uh end of our time
- 9:40together. So, um
- 9:43well,
- 9:45try that out and check in on that next
- 9:48time and I appreciate you being open
- 9:50with me.
- 9:52And I'll see you next week.
- 9:54>> Thank you so much for the suggestion and
- 9:56we'll see you next week.
- 9:57>> Okay. Bye.
