- 0:00I'm very excited to say hello to our
- 0:02next guest. We keep the train rolling
- 0:03along from Brandon Royville to Bruce
- 0:05Buffer to uh one of our favorites who
- 0:08we've talked to and about for so many
- 0:10years and uh I really appreciate him
- 0:12coming on on this Tuesday afternoon. A
- 0:14very busy man. So without further ado,
- 0:16let us say hello to El Diamante himself,
- 0:18Dustin Porier, who's kind enough to join
- 0:20us right here and now on the program.
- 0:22Hello Dustin. How are you my man?
- 0:24>> What's up Ariel?
- 0:25>> It's good to see you again. It's really
- 0:27good to see you. how sometimes we say
- 0:29how are you and that's just a a sort of
- 0:32throwaway but I would be long if I don't
- 0:34say there's there's meaning behind this
- 0:36particular how are you and so I think a
- 0:38lot of people want to know how are you
- 0:39Dustin
- 0:42>> that's a good one I like that
- 0:49>> uh man I'm good bro good bro constantly
- 0:51working on myself staying busy and first
- 0:54off I want to apologize for calling in
- 0:56with these wired headphones So, Samsung
- 0:59sent me these dope
- 1:01that work awesome uh earbuds, but I've
- 1:04been traveling and yesterday I got
- 1:05caught up in the airport. Had to drive 6
- 1:07and 1/2 hours home from Dallas, Texas.
- 1:10And I don't know where they're at.
- 1:11They're in my backpack or they're in my
- 1:12my luggage. I can't find them. But we
- 1:15made it.
- 1:16>> We did make it and I appreciate that. It
- 1:18I don't know if the audio is coming from
- 1:20the computer or the headphones, but it
- 1:22sounds like you're super far away for
- 1:23some reason.
- 1:26>> I don't know. It should be coming in
- 1:27from from this.
- 1:28>> Is it coming in from that, Frank?
- 1:32>> You might be better taking them out.
- 1:34Unless you don't want to take them out.
- 1:36>> No, I don't I don't care. I can't find
- 1:38my good Samsung.
- 1:39>> Can we try with it out in my office?
- 1:41Yeah. Yeah, I'll unplug.
- 1:42>> Okay, let's see. Let's see.
- 1:46We're going to work through.
- 1:47>> How about this?
- 1:48>> Oh, yeah. This is better. Can Can you
- 1:50keep just say hello to me?
- 1:52>> Hello. 1 2 3 4 5.
- 1:54>> Much better. infinitely better.
- 1:57>> All right, I'm good, man.
- 1:58>> Okay. All right. Um, cool. That you do
- 2:01the show on on Mondays uh for Paramount.
- 2:04Um, Deep Waters, I do believe it's
- 2:06called, right?
- 2:08>> Yeah, Deep Waters every Monday, but we
- 2:10do it from Fort Lauderdale, the
- 2:11Paramount CBS studio. They have So, I
- 2:14have to fly every Sunday night,
- 2:18sleep at a hotel on Sunday, wake up, do
- 2:20the show, and fly home Monday after the
- 2:22show. But yesterday, my flight got
- 2:24delayed leaving Florida.
- 2:26And uh actually a bunch of flights got
- 2:29delayed. So they switched me to a
- 2:31different airline and I flew to Dallas,
- 2:32Texas, but I was delayed just enough to
- 2:35miss my connection, which was the last
- 2:37flight coming into Lafayette, Louisiana.
- 2:39Oh god.
- 2:39>> So I just rented a car in Dallas and
- 2:41drove 6 and 1 half hours, dude. I made
- 2:43it home at 6:00 a.m. this morning.
- 2:45>> Oh my gosh. And you're still here. You
- 2:47could have canceled on me.
- 2:48>> Road Warrior.
- 2:49>> Nah, bro. Of course.
- 2:50>> I appreciate that. I appreciate that
- 2:52very much. But you have to fly there
- 2:54every week now. Is that sustainable? Is
- 2:55that not tiring?
- 2:58>> I mean, it's all good. Uh I love the
- 3:01guys who I do it with and uh No, it
- 3:04keeps it keeps me busy. Um
- 3:08but when stuff like this happens, it
- 3:09really sucks. You know, this is the
- 3:10second time that I've had travel
- 3:13problems uh flying in and out for the
- 3:16show.
- 3:16>> So, I think a lot of fans are are very
- 3:18happy to see you back in studio for the
- 3:20program. uh because you know when when
- 3:23you first came out after the incident
- 3:24that happened at the airport, we weren't
- 3:26sure like you know I think you even
- 3:27expressed this as well in your first bit
- 3:29of media um if you would still get to do
- 3:31that type of work and so it seems like
- 3:32all is okay that you're still going to
- 3:34be an analyst and still be able to work
- 3:35the events.
- 3:38As of right now, um, Gameamra's fighting
- 3:41at the apex that I was already scheduled
- 3:44to to work the desk, I think August 8th.
- 3:48You know, he's got a tough fight and
- 3:49Gamro's a good buddy of mine, longtime
- 3:51training partner, so I was supposed to
- 3:53work that one. We'll see, man. Yeah, it
- 3:54was all up in the air. I honestly, dude,
- 3:56after the whole incident, I was like, I
- 3:58just set on fire everything I've been
- 4:00working on, you know?
- 4:03And it's crazy, too, cuz Michael Tucker,
- 4:06who's doing him and his wife are doing
- 4:08my documentary coming out beginning of
- 4:09next year, u he called me and told me uh
- 4:14during a scene that he filmed when we
- 4:16were riding in my car driving around
- 4:18Lafayette, Louisiana, I said, "How am I
- 4:20going to sabotage myself? How am I going
- 4:22to get in my own way?" He's like, "I I
- 4:25felt it coming." And uh he called me and
- 4:29told me that. But everything's good,
- 4:30man. and I'm working on myself day in
- 4:33day out and it's a thing that's never
- 4:35fixed. You know, I've been dealing with
- 4:37mental stuff and for for years, you
- 4:39know, and I've been open on your show
- 4:40before in the past in the past few years
- 4:43about my struggles and stuff like that,
- 4:45but I'm doing everything I need to do. I
- 4:47have a great support system and I'm I'm
- 4:49good. Me and my family are good.
- 4:51Everything's everything's good on my
- 4:52side.
- 4:53>> When Michael told you that, was that was
- 4:56the reaction like, "Yeah, I know." Or
- 4:58did it hit you like a ton of bricks?
- 4:59Like did you did you say like, "Oh,
- 5:01subconsciously I've been saying this,
- 5:03but I didn't quite realize what I was
- 5:05doing."
- 5:07>> Yeah, subconsciously I was saying it and
- 5:10and I don't even remember telling him
- 5:11that when we're riding my car, but I
- 5:13said, according to him, I said, "I
- 5:16wonder what I'm going to do to sabotage
- 5:17myself now that I'm done fighting, you
- 5:20and
- 5:21partially I did. But um you know, things
- 5:25happen, we live, we grow,
- 5:28and it's something that that happened
- 5:29that's going to change my life. I know I
- 5:31said this a few times on different
- 5:32shows, but it's something that maybe it
- 5:34needed to happen. You know, now my son,
- 5:36my daughter is never going to see me
- 5:37intoxicated like I saw my father, you
- 5:39know, it's just they're breaking a
- 5:42breaking a family curse and I'm going to
- 5:44be the one to to to break it. It stops
- 5:46here. And uh it's just things happen in
- 5:48life and when you get past them,
- 5:50hindsight's always 2020. But life is
- 5:52good, man.
- 5:54>> You know, the word sabotage to me when I
- 5:55think of it, it's almost like a
- 5:56self-inflicted thing. Do you believe it
- 5:59was self-inflicted or do you believe
- 6:01that it's just like you were sort of
- 6:03unsure about where life would take you
- 6:05and that something would happen
- 6:06eventually and you were afraid of that?
- 6:10Uh,
- 6:12I think it it's
- 6:14subconsciously I knew without my full
- 6:18attention and my all my energy focused
- 6:21on something like fighting something
- 6:22that takes all of yourself
- 6:25that and I've said this a bunch of
- 6:27times, you know, idle hands. When I'm
- 6:29when I have
- 6:31too much time on my hands, I'm a danger.
- 6:33You know, I've said this for years. I
- 6:34drink too much. I overthink all types of
- 6:37things. But I got another therapy
- 6:39session tomorrow and things are good,
- 6:40bro. Life's good. I'm living learning.
- 6:42It's my first time living life and I
- 6:44take these things and and learn from
- 6:46them just like I did in my fighting
- 6:47career.
- 6:49>> Have you ever done therapy before?
- 6:52>> Yeah.
- 6:52>> Okay.
- 6:53>> Yeah. But but maybe three years ago, I
- 6:57was going pretty regularly and then once
- 7:00I started to feel better, I stopped
- 7:02going. But that's not how this works.
- 7:03you know, it's going to resurface years
- 7:06down the line or things will pop up and
- 7:09make me feel a certain way and and pull
- 7:10me back to that darkness. So, uh I I
- 7:13don't believe it's something that's ever
- 7:15fixed. There's no Eureka moment. There's
- 7:16no magic peel. There's no one day you
- 7:19wake up and the mental hurdles are gone.
- 7:22It's just it's it's something you have
- 7:24to live with and work on every day.
- 7:26every single day I have to read and
- 7:29write and do the things that I learned
- 7:31through therapy that made me feel
- 7:33better, that helped me control my
- 7:34thoughts. You know, I just got away from
- 7:36it once I started feeling well mentally.
- 7:39I thought I was good and I just continue
- 7:40living life. But after going through the
- 7:44ups and downs, you know, it's it's
- 7:47something I realized that it's going to
- 7:48be a lifelong battle. You know,
- 7:52>> that that's a really interesting
- 7:53sentiment because uh I think we've
- 7:55talked about this. cuz I too have done
- 7:56therapy twice and I always get to a
- 7:58point where I'm like I'm good and I stop
- 8:00and then I come back and then I go back
- 8:03to it. And so I'm wondering if now you
- 8:05think this is just life. Like maybe just
- 8:08like working out, just like breathing,
- 8:10it's just better off even when things
- 8:11seem perfect to just keep doing it,
- 8:15>> right? It's it's to mirror it to
- 8:17fighting, dude.
- 8:20You go to the gym every day for years.
- 8:22You figure out things. You know, you're
- 8:24dangerous in every position. You go on a
- 8:26on a win streak. You win five fights in
- 8:28a row. You don't stop going to the gym
- 8:30because you know how to fight. Because
- 8:31you you feel like you can win. You know,
- 8:33you have to go to the gym every day. You
- 8:34have to put in the work. You have to
- 8:35bleed. You have to sweat. You have to
- 8:37push yourself. Same thing with mental
- 8:39health, man. There's never a day where
- 8:40everything just clicks and you're
- 8:41healed. You know, you have to work on
- 8:43yourself every day and keep reminding
- 8:46yourself of the things you've learned
- 8:47through therapy, through whatever you're
- 8:49going through. You know, you have to
- 8:50apply it every day. So, I'm reading,
- 8:52writing every morning, waking up early.
- 8:55Uh, and my wife's holding me
- 8:56accountable, you know, just tightening
- 8:59up everything that I can do uh for
- 9:01myself and my family and my mental.
- 9:03>> Um, last week we were doing a bunch of
- 9:05shows in Vegas, and I wanted to ask you
- 9:07about something that happened last year
- 9:08because I spoke to John Wood, uh, the uh
- 9:11the head coach over at Syndicate MMA in
- 9:13Las Vegas, and we were talking about
- 9:14like retirement and life after
- 9:16retirement for fighters and what it's
- 9:18like and whatnot. And uh he said
- 9:20something that stuck with me and and I
- 9:22obviously related it to you and I'm
- 9:23curious what you think about it. He said
- 9:26that he urges his fighters never to
- 9:28retire, never to say the word because he
- 9:30feels like that becomes such an intense
- 9:33pressure on their shoulders and they
- 9:34feel like they can never go back. They
- 9:36can never change their mind. That's it.
- 9:37It's final and it becomes depressing for
- 9:39them. It becomes just very heavy. You
- 9:42had one of the most celebrated and
- 9:43beautiful retirements in the history of
- 9:44the sport. But it felt so final because
- 9:47everything was surrounded around you. I
- 9:48know you don't regret that, but in
- 9:50retrospect, do you feel like that became
- 9:52like a heavy burden because you thought
- 9:54to yourself, "That's it. It's over. And
- 9:56now what am I going to do with myself?"
- 10:02>> I'd have to really sit down and think
- 10:03about it to to give you the cleanest,
- 10:06clearest answer, but a bit a piece of me
- 10:09does. You know, I felt like we
- 10:13for 20 years I chased this dream and and
- 10:15that day in New Orleans when I was
- 10:17celebrated and you know, we buried we
- 10:19buried that man. You know, I'm not one
- 10:21of these guys that that probably are
- 10:22going to come back. You know, in mixed
- 10:24martial arts, we see it all the time.
- 10:25Guys lay the gloves down and then 3
- 10:26months later they're boxing or they're
- 10:28doing something. I don't think, you
- 10:30know, I'm like 90% sure, 95% sure that
- 10:34I'm never going to fight again. Um,
- 10:38no. I I appreciate the city, the the
- 10:40company, the the organization,
- 10:42everything. Everybody who came out and
- 10:43made that so special for me. Little
- 10:45Wayne walking with me to the octagon. It
- 10:47was a special night, you know. I think
- 10:49it was done done right. And uh,
- 10:53but yeah, I laid a piece of myself to
- 10:54rest that day. So you understand the
- 10:57sentiment that that word and and and and
- 10:59just saying it, announcing it,
- 11:02>> it's hard for fighters on the back end
- 11:03of that.
- 11:08>> Yeah. In the moment it it felt like the
- 11:10right thing, but as
- 11:12>> you know, we just hit a year since I
- 11:14laid the gloves down. They're like, and
- 11:16I prepared myself. I prepare myself
- 11:19with
- 11:23investments, with financial security for
- 11:27my family. I prepared that part, but I
- 11:29didn't prepare for the mental part. You
- 11:31know, that's something I wish going into
- 11:33my retirement fight, I paid a little bit
- 11:35more more attention to my mindfulness,
- 11:38to
- 11:40to that part of retiring. You know,
- 11:43>> what could you have done differently?
- 11:47kept practicing the things I learned in
- 11:49therapy, the things that made me feel
- 11:51better, you know, I got away from all
- 11:53that.
- 11:56>> You know, it's interesting that
- 11:57>> year years ago I was on your show
- 11:59talking to you about just focusing on my
- 12:02mindfulness and I completely got away
- 12:04from that, you know.
- 12:05>> How long ago did you get away from it?
- 12:07Like how long has it been? It's probably
- 12:10been
- 12:14a year and a half, maybe longer. I don't
- 12:16know.
- 12:16>> That's not that long.
- 12:17>> Okay. That I thought you were going to
- 12:18say
- 12:19>> completely abandoning it.
- 12:20>> Yeah. And what does that mean?
- 12:22>> Stop reading, stop writing, stop going
- 12:23to therapy.
- 12:24>> Yeah. What we were talking about
- 12:26earlier, like feeling like you're okay.
- 12:28You don't have to do it anymore.
- 12:30>> Right. But I don't know if I'm ever
- 12:33going to be okay. It's just a constant
- 12:34It's a constant battle.
- 12:37>> That It's amazing. That fight was almost
- 12:39exactly a year ago. Uh, Sunday was the
- 12:41one-y year anniversary. Did that Did
- 12:42that hit you? Like, did you notice that
- 12:44on Sunday, that date, July 19th?
- 12:47>> Well, I'm back on Instagram and stuff,
- 12:49so I'm getting tagged on a bunch of
- 12:50retirement stuff, but uh
- 12:54so traveling and seeing the retirement
- 12:56stuff, you know, I kind of got in my
- 12:57feelings a little bit. You know, I'm an
- 12:58emotional person.
- 12:59>> Yeah. No, and I appreciate and respect
- 13:01that. Um, you got off Instagram after
- 13:04the incident. Why did you feel the need
- 13:06to do that? better. I think all of
- 13:07social social media, right? Not just
- 13:09Instagram.
- 13:09>> Yeah, I still I need to redownload X or
- 13:12Twitter or whatever. I don't I don't
- 13:13Only thing I got back on was was
- 13:15Instagram.
- 13:17>> Uh yeah, just because I know how the
- 13:19internet is, dude. I took a a public L
- 13:23and uh I knew people were going to be
- 13:24coming at me. I just wasn't in the
- 13:26mindset to to see the stuff. Even if I'm
- 13:28not going down the comments, I'm still
- 13:30seeing I'm catching shrapnel from every
- 13:32angle, bro. So, I just knew it was it
- 13:34was the right thing to do. been fighting
- 13:35and been in the spotlight for a long
- 13:38time with all these big events and big
- 13:39fights I've been in. So, I just knew it
- 13:41wasn't it wasn't a healthy place for my
- 13:42mental to be on any social media. So, I
- 13:45got off for like a clean month, you
- 13:47know,
- 13:48>> and so yeah, it hasn't been that long.
- 13:50Why come back? Did you feel better off
- 13:52of it?
- 13:54>> Well,
- 13:56I did that podcast and I felt like it
- 13:58was a long form podcast. I got to kind
- 13:59of explain myself
- 14:01and really just open up about everything
- 14:04that I've been going through. So,
- 14:07I just felt like it was time,
- 14:08>> you know?
- 14:09>> That that was my
- 14:12get my word out. I didn't want to come
- 14:15back and get into it online with people
- 14:16or try to,
- 14:19you know, I just wanted a long form a
- 14:22long format where I can really talk and
- 14:25explain myself before I got back on. The
- 14:27interesting thing and I know that I'm
- 14:29you know very far away. I'm not living
- 14:31it like you. It feels you know people go
- 14:34through public people go through as you
- 14:36say L's and all that stuff all the time.
- 14:39Feels like you've gotten a lot of love
- 14:41in the aftermath of this like people are
- 14:43supporting you, backing you, paying
- 14:46homage to you, you know the the hashtag
- 14:48and all that stuff. Are you surprised by
- 14:50this? Do you feel this? Am I misreading
- 14:51the situation? because I feel like you
- 14:53are getting like you are getting a lot
- 14:55more love than most people in that
- 14:56situation.
- 14:58>> Oh, definitely man. A lot of so many
- 15:00people have reached out to me. Um,
- 15:04>> it's been it's been good. The support
- 15:06has been incredible dude and I
- 15:07appreciate everybody who has reached
- 15:08out.
- 15:09>> Does it surprise you?
- 15:13>> Um, a little bit. It just kind of
- 15:17reassures me the impact I've had on
- 15:19fighting and and
- 15:21my peers who I respect who are still
- 15:23competing, reaching out and stuff, you
- 15:25know, uh I just appreciate it. I
- 15:26appreciate it all. You know, it's
- 15:30I don't get the grace, you know, I said
- 15:32this before as well. I don't get the
- 15:33grace to deal with with my fumbles, with
- 15:36my missteps in life privately. I don't
- 15:39get that. So, that's part of the reason
- 15:42I deleted all the social media and
- 15:43stuff. I kind of wanted to just go
- 15:45through this with my family and with
- 15:47myself with my therapist in my right
- 15:49mind without getting pulled from the
- 15:51internet or or the trolls or you know
- 15:53how it is on the internet, man. I just
- 15:55uh
- 15:56>> and like I said, I don't get the grace
- 15:58to to recorrect things to work on myself
- 16:01in privacy. You know, my my life is
- 16:03public and I understand that. So, I'm
- 16:05just doing everything I can. When you
- 16:08see a UFC fighter kind of do your pose
- 16:11on the scale, when you see Tommy
- 16:12McMillan do the same thing, a fan comes
- 16:15up to you and like, how do you react to
- 16:17that?
- 16:20>> Bro, if you go out and fight the way he
- 16:22did after that pose, do it every time.
- 16:24Let's go.
- 16:25But isn't it amazing that something that
- 16:27could have been so bad is now being
- 16:29turned into, you know, this thing that
- 16:31fighters are using to say like,
- 16:34I'm about that life basically.
- 16:40>> Uh,
- 16:41>> does it does it make you feel weird?
- 16:42Like because it's not a great moment for
- 16:44you obviously, but it's now being used
- 16:46as a like this is, you know,
- 16:48>> when it when this first happened, I kept
- 16:49telling my wife, I was like, I'm going
- 16:51to I don't know how. I know this is bad,
- 16:54but I'm gonna turn this into a positive.
- 16:56I might even text you that when because
- 16:57you and thank you as well, Ariel. You're
- 16:59one of the people who reached out every
- 17:01day. Uh checked on me every day. But uh
- 17:06and I'm still trying to, but I I 100%
- 17:09believe I'm going to turn this into a
- 17:10positive.
- 17:11>> Right. Um the I want to ask you just
- 17:14about the Sean Strickland thing because
- 17:15he came out and was very very negative
- 17:18and then he walked it back a day later.
- 17:20And what bothered me, if I'm being
- 17:22honest about that, was I wish he would
- 17:23have if he was if he felt some sort of
- 17:25way about it, why not just reach out to
- 17:27you beforehand before making his opinion
- 17:30known and then getting your side of the
- 17:31story? How did you feel about how that
- 17:34played out?
- 17:36>> Like it is what it is, man. He did reach
- 17:37out, but he reached out after like a day
- 17:39or two after he he said that stuff. And
- 17:42I was off of social media, but one of my
- 17:44buddies, Kyle, who I work out with five,
- 17:46six days a week, he's one of the only
- 17:49members of the Silly Goose Fitness Club,
- 17:51obviously, he's still on the internet,
- 17:53so he's telling me, "Did Sean Strickland
- 17:55said this, John Jones said this." So, I
- 17:57was kind of getting pieces uh of what
- 17:59was going on through my wife, through my
- 18:01my friends I work out with, stuff like
- 18:04that. So, I kind of knew what was going
- 18:05on, but Sean reached out and then after
- 18:08we spoke, he took all this stuff down.
- 18:10>> Okay. So, you're okay with it?
- 18:14>> Dude, it is what it is. Opinions.
- 18:15>> Yeah,
- 18:16>> everybody's got one.
- 18:17>> Yeah,
- 18:17>> everybody's got one.
- 18:18>> We'll get back to the rest of the show
- 18:20in a moment, but I want to let you know
- 18:21that today's episode is brought to you
- 18:23by our good friends over at Kshi. We
- 18:26love KHI and we want you to support them
- 18:29because they support us. They are the
- 18:31largest prediction market in the United
- 18:33States of America. Here is what makes
- 18:35Koshi different. You are not playing
- 18:37against the house. Khi is peer-to-peer
- 18:39trading. You buy yes or no contracts on
- 18:42whether something will happen and you're
- 18:43trading directly against other users.
- 18:46Think of it like buying or selling a
- 18:47stock. The line isn't set by some
- 18:49algorithm working against you. Public
- 18:51opinion sets the price. Khi is CFTC
- 18:54approved. That means it's federally
- 18:56regulated, which is why it's available
- 18:58all across the country, including
- 19:00California and Texas. So download the
- 19:03KHI app right now. Use code Helwani.
- 19:05That's Helwani. H E L W A N I to get $10
- 19:10when you trade $10. That's Koshi. K A L
- 19:14S H I KI trade. What's next? I know you
- 19:19did the the diary of a CEO podcast and
- 19:21and obviously that's a huge huge deal.
- 19:23Could I just, you know, for this
- 19:24audience if possible, can I can I ask
- 19:26you like what did happen on that day?
- 19:28What led you to doing that?
- 19:33>> Bad decision-m on on my part. you know,
- 19:35I don't want to place the blame on
- 19:36anything or or my family or what I have
- 19:39going on in my personal life. It's it's
- 19:40at the end of the day, it's up to me and
- 19:43I made bad decisions. So, uh, what
- 19:45happened that day, I just wasn't in a
- 19:46good mental space and, uh,
- 19:51I chose to do things
- 19:55during that that that
- 19:57middle space that I was in that I
- 20:00shouldn't have and I knew I shouldn't
- 20:02have and I didn't care in the moment,
- 20:03you know, just a really bad day for me.
- 20:06>> But, uh, we live and learn, dude. It'll
- 20:08never happen again. I'm uh I'm a month
- 20:11sober from alcohol
- 20:13and I'm never going to pick up alcohol
- 20:15again. You know, this has changed my the
- 20:17trajectory in my life. I'm never going
- 20:18to drink again in my life. I made a vow,
- 20:22you know, and
- 20:24and uh when I make promises to myself
- 20:26like that to my family like that, I
- 20:28don't break them. So, maybe it was
- 20:30something that needed to happen. It just
- 20:31sucks. The whole world gets to point the
- 20:32finger. Um but like I said about turning
- 20:36it into a positive, maybe I do and maybe
- 20:38I help somebody. Maybe somebody hears me
- 20:40speak that it's going through something
- 20:41and it's okay, you know?
- 20:45>> How consistently were you drinking in
- 20:46the past year? Like how bad did it get?
- 20:49>> Uh dude, that's the thing with me and
- 20:51drinking that I try to explain to people
- 20:53like I don't drink every day, but me and
- 20:56Chris Wyman were just talking about this
- 20:57yesterday on set uh before we went live.
- 21:01Probably three out of four times if I do
- 21:03pick up alcohol, I overdrink. But I
- 21:06don't drink every day. But when I do
- 21:08drink it, we're drinking, you know, and
- 21:10that's a problem. That's a problem I've
- 21:12had
- 21:13>> throughout my life, but definitely since
- 21:15I laid the gloves down. I always drink
- 21:17to celebrate to
- 21:21at social gatherings, at parties, at,
- 21:25you know, events after fights. You know,
- 21:27I drink and have a good time. But when I
- 21:30laid the gloves down, I realized I was
- 21:31drinking to process emotion. I wasn't
- 21:33drinking to socialize. I wasn't drinking
- 21:35to
- 21:37to celebrate. I was drinking to
- 21:41to fight the feelings in my head. I was
- 21:43trying to process emotion with drinking
- 21:46to get away, to run away from it, which
- 21:47is a coward's move. And uh
- 21:52>> yeah, but I wasn't drinking every day.
- 21:53>> Okay.
- 21:54>> Every weekend, every other weekend, you
- 21:56know, but still, now that I'm going back
- 21:58to therapy, um I always said I'm not an
- 22:00alcoholic. Alcoholic is somebody who if
- 22:03they stop drinking, they start shaking.
- 22:04They need a drink every day. I go weeks
- 22:07without drinking, no problem. Uh, but it
- 22:10is a form of alcoholism, uh, alcohol use
- 22:13disorder. Once it once it gets in my
- 22:15body and I get that dopamine hit, I I
- 22:18just can't stop. I want more. I want to
- 22:19feel good. I want more. And, uh,
- 22:23that's just a problem I have. Not
- 22:24everybody has that. I have My wife is
- 22:26somebody who can drink a one glass of
- 22:27wine and put it down. If I open a bottle
- 22:30of wine and have a glass, we're
- 22:31finishing the bottle and I'm probably
- 22:32opening another one. That's my problem.
- 22:35Not everybody has that. I have good
- 22:38friends who are close to me who can have
- 22:40two drinks and put it down and walk away
- 22:42and they're good. When I start, man,
- 22:45we're going to the to the championship
- 22:47rounds.
- 22:48>> And and and something that we've learned
- 22:50in all of this is this this is in your
- 22:52family, right? You've talked about your
- 22:54your father dealing with alcoholism as
- 22:56well. So, uh this was something that is
- 22:58perhaps in your DNA.
- 23:01Yeah, I uh
- 23:04I'm not sure if alcoholism is passed
- 23:07down through genes. I don't know. But my
- 23:09father's definitely an alcoholic.
- 23:11>> Could you tell us how is he doing? Do
- 23:13you have an update on him?
- 23:15>> Uh he's
- 23:18he's homeless, man. He gets a social
- 23:20security check and and lives at a hotel
- 23:22for a couple days, gamles, goes to the
- 23:24bar. When the money runs out, he's back
- 23:26on the street until the next social
- 23:28security check.
- 23:30How long has that been the case?
- 23:33>> Well, months, months, months
- 23:36>> and and your relationship with him, how
- 23:38would you describe it?
- 23:40>> I mean, I haven't spoke to him in
- 23:41probably
- 23:45uh I don't even know, man. Maybe eight
- 23:47months. Seven, six, seven, eight months.
- 23:49I don't know.
- 23:50>> Okay. But but there was a time where you
- 23:52guys had a a pretty healthy
- 23:54relationship. Was there ever a time? you
- 23:57know, I've lived with him throughout my
- 23:59life at different times. And even before
- 24:02he was homeless, uh, you know, he
- 24:04doesn't have a cell, he doesn't have a
- 24:05phone anymore, but we would talk once a
- 24:08week. You know, he would call me once a
- 24:09week, once every other week, you know,
- 24:11we we talked pretty often, probably
- 24:13every week.
- 24:14>> Did your parents get divorced when you
- 24:15were young?
- 24:18>> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. When I was really
- 24:19young.
- 24:20>> Okay. Um, but you maintained a
- 24:22relationship with him. Um, but only
- 24:23would you say only in the last eight or
- 24:25so months has it gotten, you know, bad
- 24:28to this point to where you don't have
- 24:29communication with him?
- 24:31>> Yeah.
- 24:34Only this since he's been homeless and
- 24:37since, you know, he's been living on the
- 24:39street and doing what he's doing. That's
- 24:41that's whenever uh communication
- 24:44stop. It stopped a little bit before
- 24:45that and then I heard from him the day
- 24:47he got evicted from his apartment
- 24:51and uh put him in a hotel for a little
- 24:53while, but he doesn't want to help
- 24:55himself, man.
- 24:56>> Is this I would buy him a house if he
- 24:59was willing to get sober. I would buy
- 25:00him a house, you know, and and put him
- 25:02up, but if he's not going to sober up,
- 25:03I'm not going to do it.
- 25:04>> Right. And I'm assuming you've told them
- 25:06this. He he's he's older and he's at the
- 25:09point where he's like ch ch ch ch ch ch
- 25:10ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch
- 25:10ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch
- 25:10ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch choosing alcohol
- 25:11over which he has done in the past, you
- 25:14know, ruined ruin marriages, ruined
- 25:16friendships, ruined relationships with
- 25:18his family. He has grandkids, great
- 25:21grandkids that he's never met uh because
- 25:24of alcohol. And uh it just sucks, man.
- 25:29And that sentiment of buying him the
- 25:31house, being willing to buy him the
- 25:32house. I'm assuming you've told him
- 25:33this.
- 25:39>> I haven't been able to speak to him.
- 25:40>> Okay. I I mean, I
- 25:41>> My my sister my sister No, my sister
- 25:43went out and found him
- 25:46and spoke to him and uh told him that we
- 25:50were willing to help him out, but he
- 25:52doesn't, you know, he doesn't want he
- 25:53wants to, you know, he wants to drink
- 25:54until he dies. That's just, you know,
- 25:56how alcoholics are stubborn and
- 26:00he that's his choice, man. But I'm not
- 26:03going to let it affect my family and I
- 26:04can't let it affect my family,
- 26:06>> right?
- 26:07>> I have to protect me and and my
- 26:10household and not not mimic and mirror
- 26:14the bad decisions he made in his life.
- 26:15And that's why that's what I meant when
- 26:16I say it stops with me. You know, my son
- 26:18Kingston will never
- 26:20remember me being intoxicated, never
- 26:23remember me saying things I didn't mean
- 26:24or do doing things I didn't mean to do
- 26:27or because of alcohol, you know. So, it
- 26:29just it stops here.
- 26:31>> And do do you know like how far is he
- 26:33from you? Is he in the same town? Is he
- 26:37>> No, he's uh
- 26:39maybe 30 30 40 minutes away from you.
- 26:43>> Okay. But in the same state?
- 26:45>> Same state. Yeah. He lives in Louisiana.
- 26:47>> And I'm not asking this question to try
- 26:49to make you give any excuses, but there
- 26:52does seem to be a direct correlation
- 26:54between that sentiment and it being
- 26:56Father's Day when this all happened,
- 26:57right?
- 26:59>> Yeah. It was just heavy on my mind.
- 27:00Yeah.
- 27:01>> You know, that
- 27:02>> that was one of the first Father's Day
- 27:05and I just had, you know, my son was
- 27:09still pretty fresh and uh not talking to
- 27:12my father was the first Father's Day. I
- 27:13haven't talked to him in in in years.
- 27:15you know, it just kind of and I was
- 27:16traveling. It just kind of hit me, you
- 27:17know, and I chose I made wrong
- 27:20decisions.
- 27:21>> One thing that I just wanted to get
- 27:22clarity on cuz it was reported, but I I
- 27:25feel like the reporting might have been
- 27:26off. You were on the flight and then
- 27:28they took you off the flight. Is that
- 27:30And was there a reason why they took you
- 27:32off?
- 27:33>> No, I got into it with the desk agents.
- 27:35Uh uh it's kind of blurry to me
- 27:37honestly, but I don't think I ever got
- 27:39on the flight. Oh,
- 27:40>> okay. Okay. that. So that's what I saw
- 27:42being reported that you were sitting on
- 27:43the flight and they took you off
- 27:46>> and that could that I don't remember
- 27:48being on the plane. I remember getting
- 27:50to getting, you know, it's kind of like
- 27:53pieces come back.
- 27:54>> Yeah.
- 27:54>> After days of it, you know, and uh I got
- 27:58into it with the desk agents. They
- 28:00called the police and then I got into it
- 28:02with the police. I never
- 28:04>> I don't remember walking down the the
- 28:05bridge way to the aircraft. And then,
- 28:07you know, there was a moment. It's a
- 28:09short clip, by the way. Have you seen
- 28:11the clip?
- 28:13>> I've seen
- 28:15the the clip since I got back on
- 28:17Instagram. I'm tagged and stuff. So, I
- 28:18I've seen a good bit of it. And even
- 28:20before I got back on Instagram, piecing
- 28:23it together between what my wife was
- 28:24telling me and what my buddy I work out
- 28:25with was telling me, uh, I pretty much
- 28:29could piece it together and know know
- 28:31the extent of the video. C. Could you
- 28:34describe what that feels like seeing
- 28:36yourself like that?
- 28:40>> It's It's not good, Ariel.
- 28:41>> Yeah,
- 28:42>> it's not good.
- 28:44>> The ending though where you give sort of
- 28:46props to the police officer is like a is
- 28:48is a wild twist from how the clip
- 28:50starts. And I know you say it's hazy,
- 28:53but why did you feel the need in that
- 28:55moment? Do you recall to say like, "Hey
- 28:56man, you did a good job in the end."
- 29:00Maybe
- 29:02my head cleared up a little bit and I
- 29:04realized
- 29:06the situation and how bad it could have
- 29:08been. I'm not sure.
- 29:10>> It did seem like a how good of a job the
- 29:12police officer did. You know, it could
- 29:14have been bad.
- 29:16>> It seemed like he was remarkably calm in
- 29:19the situation.
- 29:21>> For sure. Very, very I know. He did an
- 29:24incredible job, man.
- 29:25I think you said that you were trying to
- 29:28find him, to thank him, to talk to him.
- 29:30Have you ever found him?
- 29:33>> The the police department out there that
- 29:36he works for, their PR team reached out
- 29:39to
- 29:40my agent and uh yesterday I spoke to a
- 29:43lawyer out in Atlanta who's dealing with
- 29:45my case and he's getting in touch with
- 29:48the police officer as well. But I told
- 29:50him like if he doesn't want to talk on
- 29:52the phone, can I send him a message? Can
- 29:54I write him a letter, give me an
- 29:55address, I'll send it to the police
- 29:57department, something. Just I just want
- 29:58to thank him and and tell him how good
- 30:00of a job he did, man. Cuz like like I
- 30:02said, bro, this could have been really
- 30:03bad,
- 30:04>> right?
- 30:04>> In the mindset I was in,
- 30:06>> no telling how bad it could have been.
- 30:08>> And so, can you tell us where does this
- 30:10stand right now from a legal standpoint?
- 30:12What are you dealing with
- 30:16>> with uh
- 30:18a misdemeanor charge, public
- 30:20intoxication?
- 30:21>> Okay.
- 30:22And and what's at stake there? Like what
- 30:25what could you be facing?
- 30:28>> I mean, at worst, potential jail time. I
- 30:31don't think it's going to go that far.
- 30:32Maybe a fine. But the lawyer I'm talking
- 30:35to, uh, the day I got back, my wife
- 30:39already booked me a therapy session for
- 30:41the day after I got back. The first day,
- 30:43my first full day home, I was back in
- 30:46therapy and trying to pull things
- 30:47together. So, um, the lawyer I'm talking
- 30:50to says, you know, this could be
- 30:52completely
- 30:54washed if I do the right thing. So,
- 30:56we'll see, man. Time will tell.
- 30:58>> Okay.
- 30:58>> But I did it and whatever happens out of
- 31:00it, I have to walk the walk and face the
- 31:02consequences.
- 31:04>> In in Sean's uh post tweet, he he has
- 31:08brought to light, you know, the Bud
- 31:09Light situation. Um, what what could you
- 31:12tell us about that? Where do things
- 31:13stand between you and Bud Light? No,
- 31:16they terminated my contract immediately.
- 31:18Oh,
- 31:20>> I'm sorry to hear that.
- 31:22>> No, it's all good, man. I don't need
- 31:23that [ __ ] poison in my life.
- 31:26>> So, you feel you feel at peace with it?
- 31:29I mean, it sucks that my family loses
- 31:30out on the money I had left on the deal
- 31:32with them, which is a few hundred,000.
- 31:35But,
- 31:38but also, if I'm representing something
- 31:40that I'm not going to be if I'm
- 31:43advertising something I'm not going to
- 31:44be taking part in and promoting stuff
- 31:46that, you know, it's just it is what it
- 31:49is.
- 31:49>> Sure. You you don't want to be you don't
- 31:51want to be sitting here saying I don't
- 31:52drink and then being in a commercial for
- 31:54something that you're not using
- 31:56basically,
- 31:57>> right? Right. And I don't have a problem
- 31:58with people. There's plenty of people
- 32:00out there who do drink responsibly. I'm
- 32:02not one. I'm not one. So, if you can
- 32:05drink responsibly, have fun. Drink a Bud
- 32:07Light. Drink a whatever the hell you
- 32:08want. Be responsible. Have a good time.
- 32:10I'm not that person.
- 32:11>> Sure. And And what about your other
- 32:13sponsors?
- 32:16>> Um, so far everybody's been pretty
- 32:18supportive. Amazing.
- 32:19>> You know, these other companies, these
- 32:20other companies I work with, I've been
- 32:22working with for years, for years and
- 32:24years and years. And they know my
- 32:26character. They've been around me in
- 32:27person and it was just a really bad day,
- 32:30man.
- 32:30>> Yeah. Um, one last thing on that
- 32:32particular day. I I I just be remiss
- 32:34we're focusing on the alcohol, but you
- 32:36know, obviously on camera you did say a
- 32:38slur, sort of a you know, in in a I
- 32:41guess it was a banter kind of way, but
- 32:43now it's being used as such, but that
- 32:45was brought to light as well. Um,
- 32:48>> what what are you talking about? Say it.
- 32:50>> Well, I I don't I don't I don't want to
- 32:51say it. I don't uh I don't use that
- 32:53word, but uh it see
- 32:55>> if you don't say it, I'm not going to
- 32:56know what you're talking about.
- 32:57>> I know. I know. Um I just want to know
- 33:00if you've seen the reaction to that as
- 33:02well because again, there's a lot of
- 33:04videos that are being made now. You
- 33:06know, Bobby Green weighing in on it. DC,
- 33:08I don't know if you've seen any of this
- 33:09stuff where they're like, "Yeah, you you
- 33:11know, you know how the internet is.
- 33:12You're good. You're you're you're you're
- 33:14okay." You know, this type of thing. And
- 33:15usually that doesn't happen uh in these
- 33:17cases.
- 33:20Uh
- 33:22yeah, that's
- 33:25to find the right words to to talk about
- 33:27that. I'm trying to. Man,
- 33:29>> it's a tricky one. So am I, by the way,
- 33:30just for the record.
- 33:31>> Yeah, I know. That's that's why I
- 33:33pressed you to the fire just now.
- 33:34>> I appreciate it.
- 33:35>> You know, I got to keep you honest like
- 33:37you're keeping me like you're keeping
- 33:38me.
- 33:39>> That's fine. I'll take it.
- 33:41You know, I uh
- 33:47growing up where I grew up when I was a
- 33:50kid,
- 33:53you know, speaking like that was was a
- 33:55normal thing where I come from, where I
- 33:57grew up, the people I grew up with. Um,
- 33:59and I don't talk like that. My
- 34:00daughter's never really heard me talk
- 34:02like that. But just in the moment,
- 34:05drunk, I go back to these dark, you
- 34:07know, these dark times and and uh
- 34:11Yeah. And I I apologize, ma'am.
- 34:16I think that says it all.
- 34:18>> I shouldn't have said what I said, and I
- 34:21didn't mean it
- 34:23in a racist way at all, but that doesn't
- 34:26matter. That's not something that should
- 34:27be said ever. You know,
- 34:30>> when all this happened, did you think
- 34:31that you would be out doing shows and
- 34:34and and working again this quickly, or
- 34:37were you afraid? Oh man, you know, I'm
- 34:40doing I know you how much you love the
- 34:41TV stuff. Were you afraid that it would
- 34:43take six, seven, eight months to get
- 34:44back? Because it seems like, you know,
- 34:47seeing you there yesterday, that made me
- 34:49really happy.
- 34:50>> It made me happy, too, man. And it made
- 34:52me feel like things in my life were
- 34:56trending towards being normal again, you
- 34:58know? It made me feel good leaving the
- 35:00show, you know, being stuck in the
- 35:02airport, missing flights, driving 6 and
- 35:041/2 hours home. After the show, I wasn't
- 35:06even that mad, man. I was just happy to
- 35:08be back working. My immediately my
- 35:12immediate thought after the whole
- 35:14incident was, you know, I just ruined
- 35:17everything I've been working on post
- 35:19post fighting, you know, I wanted to be
- 35:21on the on TV. I wanted to be on the
- 35:23desk. I wanted to be connected to the
- 35:24sport that's given me everything I have.
- 35:27And I just threw it all away, you know,
- 35:30because of emotion, because of my mind
- 35:33frame that day. You know, it it it's
- 35:36scary, man. You know, you can work your
- 35:37whole life and then one bad day can can
- 35:40ruin everything. Thankfully for me, it
- 35:42hasn't yet. I've lost a decent amount of
- 35:45money with with Bud Light sponsor
- 35:47falling off and you know, I had to get
- 35:49off the desk and get off the show for a
- 35:51while. Um, and CBS was figuring things
- 35:54out.
- 35:57But I I hope I hope I'm back. We'll see,
- 35:59man. Time will tell.
- 36:01But
- 36:01>> whatever happens, I brought it on to
- 36:03myself. You know what I mean? like
- 36:06I I can face the consequences, the good
- 36:09and the bad for things that I do. I've
- 36:11always been accountable. And I'm sorry,
- 36:13man. You know, to the people who who
- 36:17had to see that, the people who
- 36:20I let down, you know, that's not who I
- 36:22am. Anybody who really knows me knows
- 36:24who I am. And uh it was just a really
- 36:27bad bad time in my life. And I think
- 36:30that's the the I don't know the greatest
- 36:32byproduct in all of this is like you
- 36:34have shown us maybe as much if not more
- 36:36than any fighter like who you are over
- 36:38the years. And that's why like even on
- 36:40this show when it happened while we were
- 36:42on the air I'm like I know that's that
- 36:44you have also told us about the past
- 36:46year and you were foreshadowing a little
- 36:49bit and that's what was heartbreaking
- 36:50about it. But we know that you have a
- 36:52heart of gold. We know what you do for
- 36:53the community. We know about the good
- 36:55fight foundation. Like you are not that
- 36:56guy. You are not a bad person. And so I
- 36:58don't I'm happy to see that the the
- 37:00reaction hasn't been otherwise that the
- 37:02you know the internet and the world
- 37:03hasn't turned on you even though you
- 37:05made a mistake.
- 37:06>> I'm sure some people have but I feel
- 37:09like majority
- 37:10>> I haven't felt it. I haven't seen it.
- 37:12>> Majority of the people who follow my
- 37:14career and know who I am
- 37:17uh they reached out and and you know
- 37:20like like we talked about it's a lot of
- 37:22support man but life goes on. you know,
- 37:24this this week is packing backpacks for
- 37:27the for the school supply pickup. Next
- 37:29week with the Good Fight Foundation, and
- 37:32life life continues, you know, um lots
- 37:35more good ahead of me than than bad for
- 37:38sure.
- 37:38>> I love that back to school uh drive that
- 37:41you guys do and and I was actually
- 37:42thinking about that as school is
- 37:43resuming soon. I remember you saying
- 37:46when you retired like, "Hey, you were
- 37:47worried a little bit about the
- 37:48foundation because you couldn't auction
- 37:49off your gloves and shorts anymore. You
- 37:51don't have that vehicle." And so how has
- 37:54it been? How have you tried to offset
- 37:56that now that you don't have those
- 37:57things, those items that you can auction
- 37:59off for the charity?
- 38:01>> Um crowdfunding, us talking about the
- 38:03goals, trying to raise money. Also later
- 38:06on this year, we have a gayla planned.
- 38:08Uh you're invited if you want to come.
- 38:10I'll send you a personal invite.
- 38:12>> Thank you.
- 38:12>> Um in in Lafayette, Louisiana, it's our
- 38:15first gayla. We're going to be
- 38:16auctioning things off,
- 38:18showing the community and people around
- 38:20here in Lafayette, other business owners
- 38:21what we've done in Lafayette, Louisiana,
- 38:24and elsewhere. Um, and we're going to
- 38:27raise money through that our first
- 38:28gayla. Hopefully, it's it's a success
- 38:31and we're just going to keep it moving,
- 38:32you know.
- 38:33>> Um, I'll let you go in a moment. Uh just
- 38:35curious, you you I think are lucky to be
- 38:38working for an organization that has
- 38:40dealt with issues like this, you know,
- 38:42including at the very top of the
- 38:43organization and said like, hey, like
- 38:45this shouldn't define you. And so I
- 38:47would assume the UFC brass have shown
- 38:49you support in the aftermath of this.
- 38:52I mean,
- 38:54literally one day after the
- 38:57arrest and all that happened, Hunter
- 38:59Campbell with the UFC reached out to me
- 39:02and and asked me what he can do that the
- 39:04UFC's got my back. Anything they can do,
- 39:06anything I need help with, let them know
- 39:08and they're all in. So, no, the UFC, the
- 39:10company immediately reached out to me
- 39:13and had my back.
- 39:14>> Okay. I'm sure that felt amazing.
- 39:17>> Yeah. I I believe his exact words were
- 39:20something on the line of I can't let
- 39:22somebody who fought for this company for
- 39:24over 15 years
- 39:27try to handle all this on his own or
- 39:28something like we we have your back. Let
- 39:30us know what you need from us.
- 39:31>> Wow, that's amazing. Um, have you heard
- 39:33from Dana?
- 39:35>> No, I haven't heard from Dana. Hunter
- 39:37Hunter is the one that reached out.
- 39:38>> Okay. Um, kudos to him for doing that.
- 39:41And I'm assuming you were going to be at
- 39:42329 just because you have a history with
- 39:44Max and Connor and I've heard what you
- 39:46said and I'm not trying to relitigate
- 39:47the whole history between you and
- 39:49Connor, but I'm I'm I'm just wondering,
- 39:51do you think on a fight topic?
- 39:54>> Go ahead.
- 39:54>> I was actually supposed to work the the
- 39:56desk um that weekend. They offered me
- 39:59the show, but I just spent a week in uh
- 40:02in Florida on vacation with my family,
- 40:04so I had to turn that down. So, but they
- 40:06did offer me that that show. But this
- 40:08was before the the arrest, though, so I
- 40:09don't know.
- 40:10>> Yeah. No, I mean you would have been the
- 40:11perfect guy uh to be on that show, but I
- 40:13was happy you kind of stayed away. Was
- 40:15it hard for you to watch it like all the
- 40:16hoopla? Did you want to be there or were
- 40:18you happy to be home?
- 40:20>> No, I was happy to be with my family.
- 40:22But yeah, you're right. Like I I fought
- 40:24the main event guys a total of six
- 40:27times. You know, I have three fights
- 40:28with Max, three fights with Connor. I
- 40:30can speak about both guys and their
- 40:33fighting styles and things they're good
- 40:34and bad at. So, I would have been a a
- 40:37good one on the desk for that one. But
- 40:39no, I got to watch with my family on
- 40:40vacation, so it was nice.
- 40:42>> That's the wild thing. And and and I'm
- 40:43not trying to pull you back, but like
- 40:45Gachi, Connor, Max, like the top dudes
- 40:48at 155 are all guys that you've beaten,
- 40:51that you have history with. And I think
- 40:53I don't know if that plays tricks on
- 40:55your minds. Like, look at these guys.
- 40:57They're they're they're doing
- 40:58incredible. I could be there. I should
- 41:00be there. Do you think that way?
- 41:03>> I think subliminally part of me does.
- 41:06Um,
- 41:09but that's just it, man. I I'm I'm that
- 41:11that the fighting part. I'm done. I'm
- 41:14done. You know, I have to let it go.
- 41:17>> Does Connor come back in your mind?
- 41:20>> Bro, if he I I was talking about it
- 41:22yesterday. I saw that he said it was a
- 41:24meniscus and ACL. He didn't say the
- 41:26severity the severity of it. He didn't
- 41:27say if it was a complete tear, the ACL,
- 41:30what kind of tear of the meniscus, you
- 41:31know, cuz I have torn meniscus. If it's
- 41:33a certain kind of tear, you have to have
- 41:34surgery or your knee keeps locking up.
- 41:36You know, if it's a bucket tear, the the
- 41:39cartilage folds over and gets caught.
- 41:41So, and if it's a complete ACL tear, you
- 41:44know, that's going to be 9 10 a 10
- 41:46months, a year out after just taking 5
- 41:49years away. Uh it's it's tough to say. I
- 41:51don't know the extent of the injuries,
- 41:53but if he has to take another complete
- 41:55year off, dude, at my at his age,
- 41:59it's going to be tough to come back and
- 42:00and win. I think he tries. I think he
- 42:03tries to come back, right? Do you get
- 42:05that impression as well?
- 42:08>> He could, man. Yeah, he could.
- 42:11>> Have you heard from Michael Chandler?
- 42:15>> No.
- 42:15>> That one went crazy.
- 42:19>> What's that?
- 42:19>> When you said, "Dude, what are you
- 42:20doing? It's time to retire."
- 42:22>> I mean, dude, am I the only one asking
- 42:24this question? I I hope he goes on a 10
- 42:26fight win streak, bro. Yeah,
- 42:28>> but I mean if if you're getting hurt and
- 42:30beat up by 50 fibers,
- 42:32>> what do you think's going to happen with
- 42:33these bigger guys?
- 42:36>> No, 100%. It's just that, you know,
- 42:37that's what's going to make you into a
- 42:39great analyst, you being able to say
- 42:40these things. And sometimes they're
- 42:42>> at at some point of somebody's fighting
- 42:44career, you have to look in the mirror
- 42:45and say, "What am I fighting for?" Is he
- 42:47absolutely is he head over heels in love
- 42:49with the fight game to where
- 42:52the damage the repercussions of going in
- 42:55there against the best guys in the world
- 42:57don't matter? You know, cuz cuz it's all
- 42:59about the fight. Is he still trying to
- 43:01be the world champion? Does he think he
- 43:03can honestly look in the mirror? You
- 43:05know, it's like what are you fighting
- 43:06for, right?
- 43:07>> He's been fighting a long time, taking a
- 43:09lot of damage.
- 43:11>> As we age, we don't get quicker. We
- 43:12don't get more athletic. Our reflexes
- 43:14don't get better, you know?
- 43:16It's just like,
- 43:19and this isn't like I'm not trying to
- 43:20poke at him or be an [ __ ] here. I
- 43:23just like, what's the reason?
- 43:26>> It could just be the paycheck.
- 43:28>> Well, that's not, you know,
- 43:32this is a job, but it's it's a different
- 43:33kind of job, man. If you're just showing
- 43:35up for a paycheck,
- 43:37he's got kids and a wife and people who
- 43:39love him, you know. Um,
- 43:43that's why I laid the gloves out. I
- 43:45didn't want to be a paycheck guy. I made
- 43:46enough. I'm sure Chandler has made
- 43:48enough money as well. I made enough
- 43:49money fighting. I don't want to show up
- 43:51to get in these wars and just collect a
- 43:53check. If I'm fighting, it's to be the
- 43:54best. And it always was that to be the
- 43:57absolute best, to be the world champion.
- 43:58Whenever I felt like that was out of my
- 44:01grasp or wasn't a reality, then I made
- 44:04the decision to lay the gloves down.
- 44:07>> Last one. Last fight one. What was Ben
- 44:09Saint thinking?
- 44:11you know, he's
- 44:14been reckless before,
- 44:16put himself in bad positions before, and
- 44:19sometimes he breaks guys just being that
- 44:21hard nose, overwhelming them, uh, he
- 44:24finds a way to to to do that and
- 44:27overwhelm guys and and get his hand
- 44:28raised. But also, when you're fighting a
- 44:32guy like Patty, who's a great grappler,
- 44:34who one mistake, it's no getting out of
- 44:38it. You know, it's game, set, match. Uh,
- 44:42you can't do that. You have to be a
- 44:43little bit smarter. And, uh, we we I
- 44:46picked Patty. I thought Patty was going
- 44:48to win.
- 44:48>> Wow. Okay. All right. You know, balls.
- 44:50>> I told my buddies to bet on him. He was
- 44:51the underdog. I was like, "Dude, Patty's
- 44:53probably going to win this fight."
- 44:54>> Wow. Okay. Interesting. Uh, and that's
- 44:57why you are one of the best in the game.
- 44:58And by the way, I like the new tattoo
- 45:00right there. I see it. That's new,
- 45:01right, Kingston?
- 45:03>> I've been having it I don't know how
- 45:04long. Maybe a few months.
- 45:06>> Okay. All right. Well, it's been a
- 45:07minute. It's been a minute. Um, uh,
- 45:09great to see you, Dustin. Smiling in
- 45:10good spirits, in good health. 28 days, I
- 45:13believe. We're at 28 days.
- 45:15>> 28 might have been yesterday. I think I
- 45:16might I'd have to check check my my
- 45:19account, my day, the sober app. Uh, 29
- 45:22maybe.
- 45:23>> Hell yeah. All right. Well, keep going,
- 45:25man. Uh, we're sending you all the love
- 45:26and support in the world. Uh, well done.
- 45:29And, uh, I think a lot of people are
- 45:30learning from you. You you you you hit
- 45:32a, you know, a low moment, but you're
- 45:34climbing back up. You're not hiding.
- 45:36you're taking accountability and uh
- 45:38you've shown us already who you are. So
- 45:39to me that was that was a blip on the
- 45:41radar. That wasn't Dustin Pier, the one
- 45:43that I know for so many years. So much
- 45:45love to you and your family and uh we're
- 45:47always here for you if you need
- 45:48anything. And maybe maybe we'll finally
- 45:50make our debut in Lafayette later this
- 45:52year. DC doesn't invite me. So at least
- 45:54the king of Lafayette when that's
- 45:57>> he'll invite you to Gilroy.
- 45:59>> That's right. He has done that. He has
- 46:00done that.
- 46:01>> There you go. There you go.
- 46:03>> Thank you, Dustin. Much love to you,
- 46:04man. I really appreciate you coming on
- 46:05and talking about this. I know it's not
- 46:07fun, but I really do appreciate it.
- 46:09>> It's all good, man. A lot of things
- 46:11aren't fun, but need to happen. And I
- 46:13appreciate you uh reaching out these
- 46:15past few weeks and checking in on me,
- 46:17bro. I'm good. My family's good. Life is
- 46:19good. Another lesson learned, man. Add
- 46:21it to the long book that I'm writing.
- 46:24>> Thank you, Dustin. Much love. Keep it
- 46:26up.
- 46:27>> Thank you, bro. Yes, sir.
- 46:28>> There he is. The great Dustin Porier. So
- 46:30great to see him smile. So great to see
- 46:32him in good spirits. uh really
- 46:34appreciate him coming on and uh yeah um
- 46:38you know those are uh those are tough
- 46:40questions. Those are tough things to
- 46:41talk about. Those are tough memories and
- 46:43incidents uh to relive and um I really
- 46:48do uh I really do appreciate him coming
- 46:50on. Thanks for watching this video.
