- 0:03and i say that because the recent anime
- 0:05went completely under the radar and the

- 0:10seen like maybe a photo or two of the
- 0:12anime
- 0:13if that is the case then you need to
- 0:14start this show kimono jihen is a great
- 0:17anime filled with mystery
- 0:18incredible fights and interesting takes
- 0:20on the usual battle shonen type tropes
- 0:23that's why in this video i'm going to
- 0:25give you three reasons to watch kimono
- 0:27jihen
- 0:28and explain why i can't wait to start
- 0:30the manga
- 0:31be warned that this video contains minor
- 0:33spoilers for the first few episodes
- 0:36i'll be approaching this based on what
- 0:37happens in the anime so forgive me if i
- 0:40miss certain details from the manga
- 0:42before i get started make sure to
- 0:43comment with your thoughts on kaimono
- 0:45jihen
- 0:46i'll pick my favorite and share it as
- 0:47comment of the week in the next video
- 0:50this week's comment goes to azim jamal

- 0:56discussions like this one then make sure
- 0:58to subscribe and follow along with each
- 1:00week's
- 1:00video to get started let's look at the
- 1:03first reason to watch kimono jihen
- 1:05the world and i know the world is a
- 1:07pretty ambiguous way to put it but what
- 1:09i'm thinking of goes beyond just world
- 1:11building
- 1:12the world of kimono jihan takes place in
- 1:14a version of our world in japan filled
- 1:17with supernatural creatures known as
- 1:19kimono
- 1:20okay so at this point you might be
- 1:21thinking so far so good anime in japan
- 1:24got it show called kemono jihen with
- 1:27kemono in it got it seems simple enough
- 1:30and while kimono jihen does come off as
- 1:32a bit basic
- 1:34it's very well thought out in terms of
- 1:35the world the characters in that world
- 1:38and how they all interact the main
- 1:40character cabene works for a detective
- 1:42agency in tokyo that solves mysteries
- 1:44surrounding the kimono
- 1:46in this world the kimono live in tokyo
- 1:48but go out of their way to blend in with
- 1:50humans
- 1:51add in the fact that a lot of the kimono
- 1:53either look like humans or can transform
- 1:55into humans
- 1:56and finding these kimono becomes a
- 1:58pretty difficult task
- 2:00in this sense it's a little more nuanced
- 2:02than something like jiu-jitsu kaizen
- 2:04in jiu-jitsu kaizen it's pretty easy to
- 2:06tell the difference between the curses
- 2:08and the humans the curses are almost
- 2:11always bad guys and you can't even see
- 2:13them unless you have cursed energy
- 2:15and for the most part all the missions
- 2:17are basically the same
- 2:18bad guy go burr you go stop bad guy but
- 2:21kimono jihen is different
- 2:23first of all anyone can see kimono it
- 2:26doesn't matter if you're a kemono
- 2:28a hybrid someone who isn't a kimono but
- 2:30dated one in college
- 2:32everyone can see them ironically this
- 2:34makes them tricky to find because they
- 2:35go
- 2:36out of their way not to stand out when
- 2:38cabinet and his friends are on a mission
- 2:40you really have no idea who's really a
- 2:43kimono
- 2:43unless they do something pretty obvious
- 2:45like oh i don't know turn a bunch of
- 2:47sex-depraved degenerates into cats
- 2:49something like that is a
- 2:51pretty big giveaway and this makes the
- 2:53missions a lot more fun to watch because
- 2:54they actually come with a genuine sense
- 2:57of mystery
- 2:58another way kimono jihen is different
- 3:00from jiu jitsu kaizen
- 3:01is that the abilities aren't based on
- 3:03any kind of universal power system
- 3:06in jujutsu kaizen humans and curses have
- 3:08powers based on their use of cursed
- 3:10energy
- 3:11which everyone can use this makes it
- 3:14pretty easy to place the characters into
- 3:16power levels
- 3:17but in kimono jihen only the k mono have
- 3:20abilities
- 3:20and those abilities are based on your
- 3:22anatomy rather than a common power
- 3:25system
- 3:25for example shiki was born from an
- 3:28arachne meaning he can use certain
- 3:30spider-based abilities
- 3:32akira who is 100 my favorite character
- 3:35can use ice abilities since he comes
- 3:37from a village of
- 3:38ice users essentially a character's
- 3:41abilities are limited to the specific
- 3:43kinds of abilities you would expect that
- 3:45kind of creature to have
- 3:46and while there is a general hierarchy
- 3:49this diverse power system makes for
- 3:51interesting fights because you really
- 3:52never know
- 3:53how certain matchups might play out now
- 3:56the more interesting hierarchy is the
- 3:58ecosystem that kimono have set
- 4:00up in tokyo at the very tip top you have
- 4:02inagami
- 4:03and anari who each control their own
- 4:05halves of tokyo
- 4:06inugami who works with kabane to solve
- 4:09mysteries
- 4:10goes out of his way to check the power
- 4:11of inari meanwhile anari is always
- 4:14looking to gain power but is
- 4:15generally willing to work with inigami
- 4:18as long as it serves her interests
- 4:20then under those two you have people who
- 4:22work for them like kabane akira and
- 4:24cheeky
- 4:24and then even more kimono who kind of
- 4:26just do their own thing
- 4:27as a result viewers get this intense
- 4:29story where everyone has their own
- 4:31competing interests
- 4:32and the characters are constantly making
- 4:35moves knowing full well that they can't
- 4:36upset this balance of power unless they
- 4:38want to start a full-out war
- 4:40and this is why the world of kimono
- 4:42jihen is so cool
- 4:43the diverse abilities make for exciting
- 4:46well-balanced fights
- 4:47the kimono ecosystem leads each episode
- 4:50to play out like a game of politics
- 4:52and the setting of tokyo places viewers
- 4:55in a mysterious world where you really
- 4:57never know what to expect
- 4:59now the second reason you should watch
- 5:01kimono jihen is for the interesting
- 5:03spins on shonen
- 5:04and i know i know shonen is a
- 5:06demographic not a genre
- 5:08but there's definitely certain tropes
- 5:10that are common among the demographic
- 5:12especially among battle shonen for
- 5:14example cabinet doesn't really have any
- 5:16big dreams or goals
- 5:18this isn't true for every shonen but
- 5:20more often than not the main characters
- 5:21want to be a hero
- 5:23pirate king wizard king either that or
- 5:25they have some big goal like killing all
- 5:27the titans or saving the entire planet
- 5:29from petrification
- 5:30but kabane just wants to find his
- 5:32parents in this sense kimono jihen is a
- 5:35lot like bleach in mob psycho 100 the
- 5:38story isn't so much about the main
- 5:39character reaching a goal as it is about
- 5:41them growing up
- 5:42and figuring out who they really are and
- 5:44there's plenty of other ways cabernet is
- 5:46unique from most
- 5:47shown in protagonists cabinet is a good
- 5:50boy who likes to do good things for
- 5:52people
- 5:52but he's also someone who can be
- 5:54absolutely ruthless in a fight
- 5:56so he's pretty different from a lot of
- 5:58the other nicer shona protagonists who
- 6:00have to learn to be tough against their
- 6:02enemies
- 6:03plus unlike a lot of shona protagonists
- 6:05who are just plain stupid
- 6:07cabinet just doesn't know about the
- 6:08world since he grew up in a small
- 6:10village by himself
- 6:11and never had anyone to talk to this
- 6:13makes him hilarious to watch because he
- 6:15either has no clue what something is
- 6:17or he does but takes things way too
- 6:20literally
- 6:21for example shiki asks him early on how
- 6:24he got to inagami's office
- 6:26shiki of course is looking for a reason
- 6:28but
- 6:29kabane looks at him with a straight face
- 6:31and says a car
- 6:32but speaking of shiki he falls into the
- 6:34category of characters in shonen that
- 6:36you would generally consider the edgy or
- 6:39rational characters uryu megami piccolo
- 6:42and zoro are just a few examples
- 6:45they're not rivals they're just there to
- 6:47balance out the main character's
- 6:48optimism
- 6:49and this is exactly what cheeky does but
- 6:52cheeky is still a unique character
- 6:54because as we see in the second episode
- 6:56this overly rational behavior is just
- 6:58shiki's way of dealing with these
- 7:00problems
- 7:01so it actually ties into his character
- 7:03and is more than just the role he serves
- 7:05in the story
- 7:06but you also have akira who is
- 7:08completely different
- 7:09akira would fall into the category of
- 7:12the useless character
- 7:13these are the characters like zanetsu
- 7:15sakura and usopp
- 7:17who aren't nearly as impressive as the
- 7:18main character and have to force
- 7:20themselves to not be so
- 7:22well useless but akura stands out from
- 7:25the typical useless character
- 7:26because even though he's not that
- 7:28helpful in a fight he has a certain
- 7:30positive energy that keeps things light
- 7:32in a world full of dark mysteries and
- 7:34harsh realities
- 7:35plus unlike a lot of useless characters
- 7:38akira isn't unbearably annoying
- 7:40most of the time he's just taking
- 7:42selfies or eating sweets i don't know
- 7:44about you but i
- 7:45aspire to be as iconic as akura and
- 7:48these are just a few examples of why
- 7:50shonen fans like myself should love
- 7:52kimono jihen
- 7:53it borrows the familiar elements of all
- 7:55the classics
- 7:56but puts its own spin on them in a way
- 7:59that makes it truly unique
- 8:01but now let's discuss the third reason
- 8:02you should watch kimono jihen
- 8:04the themes and i'm sure i sound real
- 8:07original by just saying
- 8:08the themes but it's kinda hard to get
- 8:11specific without completely ruining the
- 8:13story so
- 8:14just bear with me generally speaking
- 8:16kimono jihen is a lot more mature in its
- 8:19narrative than most shonen and can
- 8:20actually get pretty dark
- 8:22for example the main characters are the
- 8:24monsters of this world
- 8:26more often than not the main characters
- 8:27in shonen are usually the humans who
- 8:29need to fight the monsters
- 8:31bleach demon slayer hunter hunter attack
- 8:34on titan fire force
- 8:35the list goes on but in a lot of those
- 8:37types of stories the main character
- 8:39also happens to be part monster the
- 8:42difference though is that those stories
- 8:44usually offer a message that goes
- 8:45something like
- 8:46just because you're part monster doesn't
- 8:48mean you're any less human
- 8:49but in kimono jihen being a k-mono is an
- 8:52important part of the characters
- 8:54i can't remember if it was on reddit but
- 8:56someone made the perfect analogy by
- 8:58comparing kimono jihen to the x-men
- 9:00which makes a lot of sense if you just
- 9:02swap k-mono for mutants
- 9:04like mutants the k-mono usually have to
- 9:07suppress their power
- 9:08so they don't stand out so unlike in
- 9:10most shonen where the human qualities
- 9:12would be the more desirable ones
- 9:14here they're actually a sign of the
- 9:15characters having to hide who they
- 9:17really are
- 9:18this is especially emphasized by the
- 9:20kitsune characters
- 9:21who have a human form but reveal their
- 9:24kitsune faces whenever they get
- 9:25emotional
- 9:26and the great part about it is that this
- 9:28ties into the ecosystem we talked about
- 9:30earlier
- 9:31the kimono have these instincts and
- 9:33feelings but they also have to suppress
- 9:34them so that they can live with humans
- 9:36and not stand out
- 9:37this leads to an incredibly immature
- 9:39narrative where cabinet and the young
- 9:41characters are forced to face their
- 9:43problems and be honest with their
- 9:44feelings
- 9:45rather than hide from or ignore them but
- 9:47the flip side to this is that it also
- 9:49leads
- 9:50to lots of morally grey characters who
- 9:52justify hurting and using others
- 9:54as part of those instincts even
- 9:56carbonate expresses that he's
- 9:58generally okay with this often comparing
- 10:00people to animals and saying he
- 10:02understands that they're just doing
- 10:03what's in their interest
- 10:05this way kemono jihen avoids portraying
- 10:08the character strictly as good or evil
- 10:10instead it offers a story where much
- 10:12like their ecosystem
- 10:13the characters understand that there's
- 10:15lots of different people with their own
- 10:17values that aren't necessarily right or
- 10:19wrong
- 10:19and this is exactly why kemono jihen is
- 10:22so fun to watch
- 10:24on top of the engaging world and unique
- 10:26spins on shonen
- 10:27it offers a mature narrative filled with
- 10:30characters who learn to be honest with
- 10:31their feelings in a society
- 10:33filled with conflicting values and
- 10:36that's it for this discussion
