Drug Class Affixes — Transcript

- 0:01as I explained in the introduction we're
- 0:04discussing a number of topics in this
- 0:06chapter that are relevant to the
- 0:08medications known as the histamine II
- 0:11receptor blockers
- 0:13the term histamine receptor blocker is
- 0:16the term that we use for the entire
- 0:18group of drugs or in other words the
- 0:21drug class
- 0:23recall that the drug class is a set of
- 0:26medications that have a similar chemical
- 0:29structure and or they work by the same
- 0:32mechanism of action
- 0:34so for instance antacids are in a drug
- 0:38class that is against acid and they
- 0:42simply neutralize the acid in the
- 0:44stomach
- 0:45as you'll see in this chapter the
- 0:47histamine 2 receptor blocker also
- 0:50reduces stomach acid but it's not in the
- 0:53same drug class as the antacids because
- 0:56they reduce the acid in a completely
- 0:59different way and we'll see how they
- 1:01work in this chapter the individual
- 1:04medications within the drug class of
- 1:06histamine 2 receptor blockers are known
- 1:09by their generic name histamine 2
- 1:12receptor blockers include symmetidine
- 1:15and famotidine
- 1:17look at those two generic names and tell
- 1:20me what is similar about them
- 1:23cymetidine and famotidine
- 1:28and you are correct if you noted that
- 1:30those two examples end in the suffix
- 1:33tadine
- 1:35t-i-d-i-n-e not just d-i-n-e or i-n-e
- 1:39that's important because other
- 1:41medications and in i n e and they're not
- 1:46histamine 2 receptor antagonists so if
- 1:50you're ever looking at a person's
- 1:51medications and see a drug ending in the
- 1:54suffix
- 1:55t-i-d-i-n-e you know that it's a
- 1:57histamine 2 blocker
- 2:00let's try that right now you're looking
- 2:02at Mrs de gero's chart and notice that
- 2:05she's on the following medications
- 2:07nabivilol
- 2:09symmetidine
- 2:11momentosone cream and clonazepam
- 2:16can you identify any members of a
- 2:19particular drug class in that list
- 2:24and you were correct if you had said
- 2:27that cymetidine ends with the
- 2:30t-i-d-i-n-e so it is a histamine 2
- 2:33receptor blocker or H2 antagonist that
- 2:37decreases stomach acid
- 2:40so after this chapter we'll fully
- 2:42understand the receptor that Ranitidine
- 2:45binds to what happens after it binds
- 2:48what the indications the
- 2:49contraindications and side effects of
- 2:51Ranitidine are and that'll give us a
- 2:54pretty good picture of famotidine and
- 2:57cimetidine there will be some
- 2:59differences mostly in the side effects
- 3:01but we will still know quite a bit about
- 3:04the other medications of a particular
- 3:06drug class by studying one member of
- 3:10that drug class
- 3:12and right now you may be thinking wait a
- 3:14minute we talked about the opioids and a
- 3:17lot of them were quite different
- 3:19to be clear there are a few cases in
- 3:22which a medication of the same drug
- 3:24class is quite different the opioids are
- 3:26one example because they're a very Broad
- 3:29and diverse drug class and that drug
- 3:32class is actually divided up into
- 3:34smaller units
- 3:37you won't find a common suffix of the
- 3:40entire group of opioids but most drug
- 3:43classes with a common suffix have a lot
- 3:46in common to other members of the same
- 3:49drug class
- 3:50so back to the medications that Mrs
- 3:53degiero is taking recall that in Chapter
- 3:562 we spoke of nominglature in the
- 3:59applying your knowledge portion of
- 4:01lesson two and there we learned that
- 4:04beta blockers ended in o l o l the
- 4:08benzodiazepines and in azepam or as a
- 4:13lamb and the corticosteroids have a
- 4:16number of drug prefixes and suffixes
- 4:18including a sewn court and pred so you
- 4:23did really well if you identified
- 4:25nebevelal as a beta blocker that treats
- 4:29hypertension cymetidine as a histamine
- 4:32two antagonist that decreases stomach
- 4:35acid
- 4:36momentosone cream as a corticosteroid
- 4:40that decreases the immune system
- 4:42response and clonazepam as a
- 4:46benzodiazepine that treats seizures or
- 4:49anxiety in the next couple lessons we'll
- 4:53go through the process that you need to
- 4:55go through to get a really good picture
- 4:57of the histamine II antagonists
- 5:00and that is what you'll need to do for
- 5:03each one of the drug classes that I just
- 5:05mentioned but once you do that for just
- 5:07those four drug classes you'll know
- 5:09quite a bit about 22 of the 200 most
- 5:13prescribed medications
- 5:16so let's take a quick quiz you're
- 5:18looking at a client's medications and
- 5:20see that he's on the following
- 5:22medications
- 5:23famotidine
- 5:25methylprednisolone diazepam and Atenolol
- 5:30identify each drug class that the
- 5:33medications belong to
- 5:38so you were correct if you identified
- 5:40famotidine as the histamine II
- 5:43antagonist that decreases stomach
- 5:45acidity that's the drug that we're going
- 5:48to get a really good picture of in this
- 5:51chapter
- 5:52Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid
- 5:55that decreases the immune system
- 5:57response diazepam is also known as
- 6:01Valium and it is a benzodiazepine it's
- 6:05prescribed for seizures and anxiety and
- 6:08Atenolol is a beta blocker
- 6:12that decreases hypertension remember the
- 6:16o-l-o-l suffix
