DRIVING the Future Mercedes with NO Steering Wheel!! Vision AVTR Review — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00this is really cool
- 0:03this is probably like a video game
- 0:08but i think maybe we need a new driving
- 0:09test for this huh i guess
- 0:16hey guys welcome back to remove before
- 0:18race i'm your host raz
- 0:19and we have something extremely
- 0:21extremely special today
- 0:23you can see it's detecting my presence
- 0:25and it started to turn on
- 0:26it is one of the most futuristic cars
- 0:28that mercedes-benz
- 0:30have ever designed and created and
- 0:32perhaps the one that is the most forward
- 0:33thinking
- 0:34not only in the way that it's designed
- 0:36the way the wheels are the way the cabin
- 0:37is
- 0:38but even the way that it drives and that
- 0:40is something very exclusive and special
- 0:42that i'll get to show you later it is of
- 0:44course the vision avtr
- 0:46which has been clearly inspired by the
- 0:48movie avatar
- 0:50of james cameron's and of course we're
- 0:52getting the sequels next year which
- 0:53we're all very excited about
- 0:54so i cannot wait to show you what this
- 0:57one of the coolest
- 0:58mercedes concept cars in the world can
- 1:00do let's dive straight in
- 1:13[Applause]
- 1:19so guys vision avt-r it is something
- 1:22that is
- 1:23completely different to what you would
- 1:24have seen before in a concept car
- 1:26and when you look at something like this
- 1:28you really do think well is it actually
- 1:30going to work
- 1:31and on the face of it it doesn't really
- 1:32look like it does it but this is
- 1:34actually a drivable car
- 1:35and i will show you that later on but
- 1:37first to really appreciate kind of
- 1:40how mercedes have designed the various
- 1:42bits of this in conjunction not only
- 1:43with the movie but
- 1:44nature and this idea of future and
- 1:46forward thinking
- 1:47just a quick reminder of the other
- 1:49awesome concept cars that mercedes have
- 1:51put out
- 1:51in recent times now i do love
- 1:53mercedes-benz to my core
- 1:55so i am a little bit biased about this
- 1:57but i absolutely love for example
- 1:59the my back vision concepts that they
- 2:01had recently which were a lot more
- 2:03familiar in the way that they are normal
- 2:05cars with wheels etc
- 2:07but very muscular in the way that they
- 2:09look both the coupe
- 2:10and the cabriolet and they are truly i
- 2:12think my favorite two concept cars
- 2:14ever now when you look at the avt-r just
- 2:17generally in its shape from that
- 2:18position it's very muscular still yes
- 2:22you haven't got like a huge bonnet like
- 2:24in
- 2:24the vision my backs but you have got
- 2:27very very strong shoulders both on the
- 2:28front
- 2:29and on the rear and generally it's a
- 2:31very aerodynamic looking shape generally
- 2:33you know it's a mercedes-benz
- 2:35just staring at it but as i said to
- 2:37really appreciate this car
- 2:39come a bit closer let's have a look
- 2:41around properly and i'll show you every
- 2:43little bit
- 2:43before we go out and see how this thing
- 2:45actually drives
- 2:48so guys here we have the avtr we've
- 2:50actually brought it inside of the hanger
- 2:51that we had it in front of just now
- 2:53just so you can appreciate these leds
- 2:55now you know
- 2:56the car was sleeping and as we've
- 2:58approached it
- 2:59now the lights have turned on now let's
- 3:02start as we normally would
- 3:03with the front end that face should in
- 3:07fact look very familiar to you because
- 3:08that is the face
- 3:10of the eq family first seen in for
- 3:13example the eqc
- 3:14but more recently seen in the eqs in its
- 3:17gorgeous gorgeous form i believe
- 3:20that is the face of eq so that is
- 3:23unmistakable and you'll notice the lines
- 3:25as you get in closer next to the lighted
- 3:27star
- 3:28and you're going to see lines like this
- 3:30all over the car it's kind of like a
- 3:32theme
- 3:33of how the car is powered how it's
- 3:35powerful how it's kind of sucking in
- 3:37power from nature that's a nice sight to
- 3:40see that you would find in your normal
- 3:41mercedes-benz as well
- 3:43and the paint finish very similar to
- 3:44alubim silver as you would have seen on
- 3:46the sls
- 3:47of old now as we come around probably
- 3:50one of the biggest highlights of the car
- 3:52itself
- 3:53which is the really interesting wheels
- 3:56now these are based on the wood sprites
- 3:57from avatar
- 3:58and as you can see in the standard form
- 4:00they kind of glow blue
- 4:02which is really quite interesting and
- 4:04they can do all sorts of interesting
- 4:05things i'm going to show you some of the
- 4:07safety features later
- 4:08but they do show different elements as
- 4:11well
- 4:12so for example we could show the first
- 4:15one i believe was air
- 4:17which is showing now and then we have
- 4:20water like spring water you can see it's
- 4:21kind of flowing out
- 4:23the one after that is earth
- 4:27which shows all the colors of avatar and
- 4:29the earth etcetera
- 4:30and finally the last one is fire which
- 4:33you would expect to be
- 4:34red but it's not it's more like
- 4:36pulsating energy instead
- 4:38which is cool now of course this lighted
- 4:40star in the middle
- 4:41as well and what i found really
- 4:43interesting is in fact the tyre
- 4:45which is not your traditional tyre again
- 4:47those lines looks a bit more
- 4:49organic and look you'll see a little
- 4:52mercedes-benz star
- 4:53hiding in there like you have in the f1
- 4:55cars that brings us then to
- 4:57the really interesting interior you're
- 5:00very much connected to the interior
- 5:01even outside of the car you see so much
- 5:04of it
- 5:05and it's this concept of linking the
- 5:07outside world in nature
- 5:09with the internal occupants so what
- 5:11we're going to do is now we're going to
- 5:12dive in and check out some of the
- 5:13highlights
- 5:14of the interior so let's head inside now
- 5:17we're going to get the doors
- 5:18open
- 5:21which is a very cool process in itself
- 5:24you'll notice straight away first of all
- 5:25your typical ambient lighting like you'd
- 5:27find even
- 5:28in today's mercedes-benz cars but this
- 5:30is a very special interior
- 5:32as you can see very concept car probably
- 5:34not all that practical in reality but
- 5:37what this shows is a two plus two
- 5:39arrangement in a fairly sporty looking
- 5:40car
- 5:41we've got dynamica if you've heard me
- 5:43say that before you find that in all of
- 5:45your amg's it's another word for
- 5:47man-made alcantara type leather race tex
- 5:51if you're into your porsches so that is
- 5:53what this material here is but more
- 5:55interesting than that
- 5:56this rear material is made of like dead
- 5:58fishes essentially it's all recycled
- 6:00and we've got this is not real wood here
- 6:04it does give a very nice kind of boat
- 6:06like finish that you find in a really
- 6:08expensive yacht or something
- 6:09but it's in fact rattan like you have on
- 6:11outdoor furniture
- 6:13and then there's so much rose gold
- 6:15everywhere and you know that's a typical
- 6:17sign of mr gordon wagner and his
- 6:19influence
- 6:20on any bit of mercedes concept car but
- 6:23as we said yes it's got
- 6:24two plus two design that's interesting
- 6:26we've got this kind of curvature
- 6:28that goes around the car and there's a
- 6:30line of rose gold
- 6:32that connects the outside to the inside
- 6:36and connects the rear passenger seat
- 6:38to the headrest of the front passenger
- 6:41and it's this whole idea of connecting
- 6:43the front passengers to the rear and the
- 6:45entire inside compartment
- 6:47to the outside world so i don't claim to
- 6:50know
- 6:51what that means but essentially you can
- 6:53get this idea of like
- 6:55nature merging with technology which is
- 6:57quite cool
- 6:59right guys now we're gonna head inside
- 7:01now everything is run by this center
- 7:03merge controller if you like that's what
- 7:06they call it because it merges
- 7:07the driver with the vehicle now to wake
- 7:10up the car all i need to do is bring my
- 7:12hand
- 7:12close to the merge device and there you
- 7:15will see
- 7:16it's raised and look at the energy
- 7:19coming out of that
- 7:20so-called energy anyway and there you
- 7:22see the world of avatar
- 7:23now this is not a screen as you would
- 7:26normally see it this
- 7:27is more like what's that old saying god
- 7:29does not build in straight lines
- 7:30this is very much like that this is a
- 7:32screen that is instead curved much more
- 7:34like nature
- 7:35now you can see the vehicle in there
- 7:38moving through the world
- 7:41which is very cool but there's no
- 7:43buttons so how do you make selections
- 7:45so what i'm going to do i'm going to
- 7:46raise my hand here
- 7:48then you'll see the selections come up
- 7:51different ones
- 7:53we're going to choose this one perhaps
- 7:57you see you will find a tree here that
- 7:59was very famous in avatar
- 8:00when you choose that you can see the
- 8:02pulse went through the car
- 8:05and we wind up oh i chose the other one
- 8:08i chose the mountains
- 8:10we've ended up in the mountains here of
- 8:12avatar
- 8:14as you can see and that is kind of how
- 8:17the selection process works
- 8:19very simple you just go through
- 8:22different selections here i'm going to
- 8:23show you an animal
- 8:24it's the banshee i believe
- 8:27there you see the banshee turned up
- 8:30completely different way of interacting
- 8:32with the car very futuristic
- 8:34very forward thinking now let's go and
- 8:36check out the rear
- 8:37so guys now we're approaching the rear
- 8:39you can see kind of the flaps
- 8:41waking up that was pretty awesome wasn't
- 8:43it and did you see how the
- 8:44rear light turned on now that rear light
- 8:47again
- 8:48if you think of the old mercedes
- 8:49concepts that we've seen should be
- 8:50pretty familiar
- 8:51we've got a lighted rear mercedes star
- 8:54as well
- 8:54you can see how the ambient lighting
- 8:56kind of hits the floor almost like a
- 8:58welcome light as well which is awesome
- 9:00more interesting telling you though
- 9:02about these fins they serve many
- 9:03purposes
- 9:04for example aerodynamic purposes you can
- 9:07imagine them
- 9:08being used to increase downforce but
- 9:10also let's say if you're braking
- 9:12with the car look at that they turn red
- 9:14like a brake light
- 9:15and so do the wheels which is again
- 9:17incredible it's good safety
- 9:18it looks great but it also has a
- 9:20function as well
- 9:22so these again inspired by nature the
- 9:26designer first sketched them and then
- 9:27the engineers got to work on well how
- 9:29would this be useful
- 9:30and well there you go just in what i
- 9:32don't know would you call it a diffuser
- 9:34but you've got
- 9:35these flowing energy lines and these
- 9:37increase in speed
- 9:38the faster you're going again it's kind
- 9:40of a signal to the rest of the world
- 9:41what's happening and
- 9:43really stunning really something that we
- 9:44haven't seen before but to really
- 9:46appreciate this is to actually see the
- 9:48car driving
- 9:50so let's jump in right now
- 9:57so guys here we are inside the vision
- 9:59avt-r
- 10:00i'm here with head engineer of the
- 10:03electric
- 10:04drivetrain element which is boris boris
- 10:06thank you for
- 10:07uh showing us around hey nice having you
- 10:10thank you
- 10:10um it looks like we're in the future
- 10:13right now huh
- 10:14this is incredible so can you tell us a
- 10:17little bit about how
- 10:18this works in terms of driving yeah sure
- 10:20now we're driving
- 10:22um with the emerge controller
- 10:25so there are no steering wheels no brake
- 10:27or gas pedal
- 10:28yep it's just by placing your hand on
- 10:32this nice device
- 10:34you can drag like a normal car just
- 10:37pushing it backwards
- 10:38it's at a range or pushing forward and
- 10:41going
- 10:41through the corners or tilting edge so
- 10:44it does turn
- 10:45pretty directly doesn't it yes because
- 10:47we got um steering in front and in the
- 10:49back
- 10:50yeah and this enables um
- 10:54driving parallel i can show you just by
- 10:56turning
- 10:57oh wow so it's kind of like crab
- 11:00stepping you guys call it right right
- 11:02yeah and you told me which is quite cool
- 11:04that pulling backward is
- 11:06always breaking this yeah there's a
- 11:09separate button for reverse
- 11:10that's right correct okay and then even
- 11:12in that mode
- 11:14pulling back is still to break it's
- 11:15always breaking for safety
- 11:17which makes sense because then
- 11:18psychologically as a driver or a pilot i
- 11:21guess
- 11:22um you always know braking is that
- 11:24regardless of what you're doing
- 11:25right how long did it take you to get
- 11:27used to it as a driver
- 11:29like doing this as opposed to did it
- 11:31take a few goes to get your mind
- 11:34i think it will happen in minutes yeah
- 11:36it's pretty intuitive okay
- 11:38um it's like um going from an old
- 11:42mobile phone to a smartphone okay church
- 11:45device
- 11:47and in the beginning is kind of weird
- 11:50because something new
- 11:51yeah but now i think he won't go back
- 11:55to an old mobile phone now so it's
- 11:58pretty the same
- 12:00and we also can um combine those things
- 12:03yeah so it feels like you're drifting
- 12:06that's cool
- 12:11really looks like you're drifting
- 12:16and then you get so much view of the
- 12:18world as well thanks to
- 12:20like the design of the front and the
- 12:21glass doors as well yeah you're pretty
- 12:24connected to a surrounding
- 12:26like an amateur i mean you do have like
- 12:29quite a large a pillar but then it makes
- 12:30up for it with
- 12:32obviously the glass doors which is cool
- 12:34it's nice with the iphone's kind of wide
- 12:35view you can get like
- 12:36i can see the what we see which is the
- 12:39door there the door there
- 12:41the sky i guess it's also a little bit
- 12:43like a video game right
- 12:44yes so when you play a computer it's
- 12:47yeah i think you will
- 12:48get used to yeah i'm a 80s 90s kid and i
- 12:52used to play with joysticks on the pc
- 12:55so once you get used to using that you
- 12:57can get used to using this as well right
- 12:59so um i will stop cool and hand it over
- 13:03to you
- 13:03cool i think i'm ready for this i'm
- 13:05ready for the future
- 13:08[Music]
- 13:11well that is interesting we've got some
- 13:14velocity going
- 13:16and then we turn it ah now i get it
- 13:19now i get it
- 13:23all right that's that's i'm getting used
- 13:25to it now yeah
- 13:28that's interesting and then break
- 13:32and it breaks pretty well yeah this is
- 13:34really cool
- 13:36this is probably like a video game
- 13:42but i think maybe we need a new driving
- 13:43test for this huh i guess
- 13:46that's
- 13:50yeah it was uh a full day yeah of just
- 13:53driving do you get a license at the end
- 13:55of it um no but there are actually
- 13:57maybe three people you know um which are
- 14:00able to drive okay car can golden drive
- 14:03it
- 14:04um yeah he got also a short in
- 14:07production
- 14:07so boris thank you so much um i need to
- 14:10congratulate you if i could shake your
- 14:12hand i would but sadly i can't
- 14:14but next time hopefully that we meet up
- 14:17really great job on this
- 14:18really impressive so guys there's a look
- 14:20at actually driving the avtr and all of
- 14:22the design of it i hope you enjoyed it
- 14:24please do like subscribe hit the bell
- 14:26icon if you did i've got a few more
- 14:27things to do here in germany as you saw
- 14:29in my blog so
- 14:30i'll see you guys next time
