- 0:06My name is Paul
- 0:08Peterson and I'm Drew Peterson's
- 0:13brother. Drew was quite the character
- 0:15growing up. He was 6 years older, but he
- 0:19was always there for me as I was younger
- 0:21when I needed
- 0:22him. I kind of looked up to
- 0:25him. He went in the service. Um he was
- 0:29an MP and he was a guard and a sniper
- 0:33guard for President Ford. It was just
- 0:37proud of
- 0:38[Music]
- 0:43him. That guy is my brother-in-law Drew
- 0:48Peterson. When I look at him here and
- 0:50see him as a young man, I think he looks
- 0:52like a good guy there, doesn't he?
- 0:56When he got out of the army, he got a
- 0:58job as a officer. Drew loved being a
- 1:01cop. He was very good at it. That was
- 1:03his ambition in life is to be a police
- 1:05officer.
- 1:06Drew was doing really well. He had
- 1:09gotten awards. He had gotten
- 1:11accommodation. He was well thought of
- 1:13and very successful police
- 1:17officer. A lot of people are married to
- 1:19men who have some sort of positions of
- 1:21authority. They're like, "Well, I mean,
- 1:23my husband would never do that." but
- 1:25he's got a problem with stability and
- 1:27and monogamy. He had three troubled
- 1:31marriages. Carol Brown was Drew
- 1:34Peterson's first wife. They were high
- 1:35school
- 1:36sweethearts. Vicky Connelly, uh she was
- 1:3923, he was 28. They were um married for
- 1:43about nine years. They had no
- 1:45children, but now all eyes are on his
- 1:48third wife, Kathleen Savio.
- 1:51Despite all of his personal issues, Drew
- 1:53Peterson is pretty much respected in the
- 1:57community. And you know, although he
- 1:59does have some issues with his current
- 2:01wife, Kathleen Savio, they do have two
- 2:03small boys. And people are thinking,
- 2:05well, maybe this one, maybe this one's
- 2:08the one that's really going to work.
- 2:11But when he met a hotel clerk one night
- 2:13on his rounds as Sergeant Peterson, all
- 2:16that was going to change because there
- 2:17behind the counter was 16-year-old Stacy
- 2:23Kales. Stacy was a beautiful young girl
- 2:25and had really uh big plans for herself
- 2:29and she worked nights at a local hotel.
- 2:34Drew Peterson would come by her work at
- 2:36night, chat with her as she worked at
- 2:38the front desk of the hotel and they
- 2:40developed a
- 2:43[Music]
- 2:46relationship. Stacy turned
- 2:4917 and she's like, "Hey, you want to
- 2:52come over?" I go to her apartment. It's
- 2:54fully furnished. She's like, "Oh, Drew
- 2:57is going to stop by. You're going to
- 2:58meet
- 3:00Drew." Oh, here comes Drew.
- 3:04He's older and he was
- 3:07married. That's what bothered
- 3:10me. Stacy did tell me that he was
- 3:13married to Kathleen Savio. There was
- 3:15something with them monies or whatever.
- 3:18That part wasn't done yet cuz obviously
- 3:20he wasn't
- 3:23divorced. I thought it was a fad, but
- 3:26the next thing you know she was
- 3:27pregnant.
- 3:30He was 30 years older than she was. But
- 3:32from Stacy's point of view, she's out on
- 3:33her own. She doesn't really have
- 3:35anything. This guy's given her a place
- 3:37to live. He's given her a car. He's
- 3:39given her financial stability. It's
- 3:40understandable that she would go along
- 3:42with this.
- 3:45Our childhood growing up wasn't the
- 3:49greatest. Stacy's mother had her own
- 3:51demons. She just like disappeared one
- 3:54day. She left the house with her Bible
- 3:56and never came
- 3:57back. Stacy was like 14 or 15 at the
- 4:00time.
- 4:02[Music]
- 4:03The struggle we had as kids was
- 4:05terrible. Me and Stacy always just stuck
- 4:11together. After dating Stacy for 2
- 4:14years, Drew Peterson finally divorces
- 4:17Kathleen Sabio. It's finalized. That's
- 4:20October 10th, 2003. 8 days later, he
- 4:24marries
- 4:26Stacy. Their son Anthony was not quite 3
- 4:28months old.
- 4:31So now Stacy is my
- 4:33sister-in-law. It was kind of strange at
- 4:36first to have her be a part of the
- 4:38family because here she was so young.
- 4:43She wanted to have a family that we
- 4:44never had growing up.
- 4:47Later on, she had Lacy. She named after
- 4:50a sister who had died when she was a
- 4:52baby. And so she had two of her own
- 4:54children.
- 4:57But Stacy had Drew Peterson's two
- 4:59children to raise as well. She treated
- 5:01them like her own two biological
- 5:03children. So she was just shy of her
- 5:0521st birthday. And she is a mother of
- 5:13four. He did try to make her
- 5:17happy. We as a family really didn't get
- 5:19to know Stacy until after the marriage.
- 5:23But what we could see in Drew's
- 5:25relationships, it was this pattern of
- 5:27behavior, abusive
- 5:30behavior. Stacy was starting to see this
- 5:37behavior. He ruined so many
- 5:47lives. I remember this
- 5:49picture. You remember being there for
- 5:51that picture?
- 5:53This picture where she is smiling and
- 5:56happy. This is what we all know. This is
- 5:59what we all
- 6:03loved. And in that moment, she was
- 6:07happy. I think she thought that she
- 6:09could make it work
- 6:11out. She told me, she says, "I see you
- 6:16and Paul and I keep thinking, why can't
- 6:20I have that with him?
- 6:23because they were brothers.
- 6:29Why? She did have a dysfunctional
- 6:33[Music]
- 6:34background. So that when my
- 6:36brother-in-law came around, she didn't
- 6:38have the wherewithal to know to be
- 6:41careful of
- 6:43him. During one of the family parties, I
- 6:47saw a bruise on her hip and I asked her
- 6:49where she got it from and she wasn't one
- 6:51to hide the things that he did. She
- 6:53says, "Drew pushed me up against the TV
- 6:55and gave me a
- 6:58bruise." There were things that we were
- 7:00seeing, but nothing that was
- 7:03so horrendous that we could, you know,
- 7:07say, "Oh my god, you
- 7:09know, you need to get out."
- 7:11I did see him shove my sister one
- 7:14time, like complete launched her across
- 7:16the
- 7:18[Music]
- 7:19room. It just made me afraid. One of the
- 7:23kids saw it and I just took the kids
- 7:25outside. I didn't play it off like
- 7:27nothing happened,
- 7:28but didn't want the kids to see
- 7:33[Music]
- 7:35that any kind of domestic violence is
- 7:37about power and
- 7:38control. And that's what he did. And and
- 7:42he did it within the realm of his job.
- 7:44There was some issues in his job that I
- 7:46believe that he got a little carried
- 7:48away with his power and
- 7:55[Music]
- 7:56control. My name is Pastor Neil Shory
- 7:59and I counseledled Drew and Stacy
- 8:01Peterson in 2006 and 2007.
- 8:06It was a large church, so I was the
- 8:08counseling pastor for the whole church.
- 8:09I probably knew both of them better than
- 8:12anybody else knew knew them in the
- 8:14church. I recall my first meeting with
- 8:17Stacy um after a service one day on a
- 8:20Sunday. We met at a coffee shop right
- 8:23down the street and she said that often
- 8:26Drew had some jealousy, but it was okay
- 8:29because it really just meant that he
- 8:31loved her a lot. But I knew that
- 8:33something was wrong. It didn't seem like
- 8:36a a healthy
- 8:38[Music]
- 8:42marriage. One of the times I met with
- 8:44Drew and
- 8:45Stacy at their kitchen table, she said,
- 8:48"I went to see my sister who was dying
- 8:50of
- 8:51cancer." And when she came home, Drew
- 8:55held her against a wall and he he forced
- 8:59her to take articles of clothing off and
- 9:02he accused her of being with another
- 9:06man. And she told me this in front of
- 9:10him. And I remember thinking, I cannot
- 9:12believe that I'm hearing this right now.
- 9:16And I glanced over at Drew and he just
- 9:18looked cold.
- 9:22There was no affect. It was like looking
- 9:23at a
- 9:25reptile. He just stared ahead. And after
- 9:29she said that, she started sobbing. He
- 9:31stands up and he said,
- 9:34"Well, I think that's about enough for
- 9:36me now. Thanks for coming." And he
- 9:38reached out, shook my hand, and walked
- 9:41out of the room. And he left me sitting
- 9:44there with Stacy at the table.
- 9:48And I remember thinking, I've got to get
- 9:51out of this house as fast as possible.
- 9:54And I remember at one point praying with
- 9:56Stacy at the table. And I literally kept
- 9:58my right eye open when I prayed, which
- 10:00is not anything I would ever do because
- 10:03I think he was trying to intimidate me
- 10:04in that moment.
- 10:13It is so incredibly rare that an abused
- 10:19person would describe their abuse to a
- 10:23third party in front of their
- 10:26abuser. So if Stacy Peterson was being
- 10:29abused by Drew, this was
- 10:31astounding. It just begs the question,
- 10:34was it a cry for help?
- 10:39Stacy never told me that she was
- 10:41planning to leave Drew, but I believe
- 10:44that she probably
- 10:46was. I remember she said, "What do you
- 10:49do when you're married to a police
- 10:51officer?" I think it's very, very
- 10:53understandable for someone who's married
- 10:55to a police officer that's 30 years
- 10:56older than she is that she would sort of
- 10:59feel hopeless and and
- 11:01stuck. She started to walk me towards
- 11:04the front door. We walked down the
- 11:06hallway and I I remember looking to the
- 11:10left and that's where Drew had a home
- 11:12office and he was standing behind his
- 11:15desk staring and both of his hands were
- 11:19behind his back and it was ve very
- 11:22odd and I walked up towards him and I
- 11:25slowly stuck out my hand to shake it and
- 11:28he left his left hand behind his back
- 11:30and he pulls his right hand out and he
- 11:32shook my hand with no emotion. and and
- 11:35that was the last time that I saw Drew.
- 11:43So, this is the situation heading into
- 11:45the holidays of 2007. Uh Drew and Stacy
- 11:48have now been married for about 4 years
- 11:50and she is just barely out of her teens
- 11:52at this point. She is feeling very
- 11:54stifled. He is feeling super jealous and
- 11:57the whole thing just looks like it's a
- 11:59tinder box waiting to explode.
- 12:01And all Stacy's sister, Cassandra, could
- 12:03do was sit by and watch as the only
- 12:06person who'd ever been there for
- 12:08Cassandra. Basically had the walls close
- 12:10in around
- 12:13[Applause]
- 12:15her. She goes, "I'll make dinner. Come
- 12:18over." I had went over there and Stacy
- 12:23asked
- 12:24me how I felt about her getting a
- 12:27divorce. I said I was scared.
- 12:31Drew was very
- 12:34controlling. I looked at her and I said,
- 12:37"Let's go grab the kids. Let's get the
- 12:41out of
- 12:42here." And she said she couldn't because
- 12:46Drew was the bread
- 12:48winner and he would take her
- 12:51kids. My heart
- 12:54sunk. I felt helpless.
- 13:00This is something that we've heard time
- 13:02and time again. Isolation, financial
- 13:05control, all of these things. Stacy must
- 13:08have known how hard it would have been
- 13:10for her to get a job and support four
- 13:12kids. So, she really must have felt
- 13:15trapped.
- 13:18[Music]
- 13:21Few days after October 28th, 2007, me
- 13:25and my sister had plans to paint our
- 13:29good friend's
- 13:31house. So, I had called her and um
- 13:35she never answered her calls from me,
- 13:40which
- 13:41is not
- 13:44normal. Well, I stopped by the house.
- 13:47There was no cars in the
- 13:50driveway. They knock on the
- 13:52door. One of the kids answers the door
- 13:55and he said, "Mom left. Dad's out
- 13:57looking for
- 13:58her." Didn't know what to do. I just
- 14:02said, "F it. I'm going to call
- 14:05Drew." Drew answers the phone. He's out
- 14:09of breath. I can hear keys jingling.
- 14:12He's just ranting about my sister. I
- 14:16just knew something was wrong.
- 14:19Drew didn't seem all that concerned
- 14:22about his missing fourth wife,
- 14:25Stacy. It was like she took off with
- 14:28another man. She took
- 14:30$25,000 from a safe at home and she's
- 14:33gone. She's on a spending spree and
- 14:35she's with another man. He had said she
- 14:38left with a boyfriend. My sister didn't
- 14:41have a boyfriend. She wasn't allowed to
- 14:43have any friends. was true.
- 14:51Cassandra Kale's worst nightmare is
- 14:54coming true. The one person who has
- 14:56always been there for her, her sister
- 14:58Stacy, has
- 15:00vanished. Worse yet, she believes that
- 15:04her husband, a police officer, is behind
- 15:06it. But where do you go when you suspect
- 15:09a cop of committing a crime?
- 15:14[Music]
- 15:18Drew was the sergeant of the Bowling
- 15:20Brook Police Department. I didn't know
- 15:22what else to do. And then I just drove
- 15:25to Illinois State Police District
- 15:305. It was a Monday morning. I just got
- 15:33into the office and Cassandra
- 15:36Kales reported that her sister Stacy
- 15:40Peterson was missing. I got to meet
- 15:43Cassandra Kales and had the opportunity
- 15:46to talk to her.
- 15:49So, I'm telling this guy Drew had did
- 15:51something to my sister.
- 15:53The fact that the family alleged that a
- 15:56police officer was involved in her
- 15:58disappearance, that made this more of a
- 16:01significant event. But Stacy had not
- 16:04been gone that long. So at the time it
- 16:07was decided that we would
- 16:11[Music]
- 16:16wait. For 3 days I felt law enforcement
- 16:20were not doing
- 16:22anything and I didn't know what else to
- 16:24do and I said call the news. 23-year-old
- 16:27Stacy Peterson's family reported her
- 16:29missing on Monday. 23-year-old Stacy
- 16:32Anne Peterson is the wife of a patrol
- 16:34sergeant here with the Bowling Brook
- 16:36Police Department. It blows up and
- 16:38becomes a national news story. State
- 16:40police say they're searching specific
- 16:41areas for the wife of a Bowling Brook
- 16:43Police Sergeant. So far, no new clues
- 16:45have been found. Every national news
- 16:47organization was there. People always
- 16:50ask, "Why was there so much attention to
- 16:52this particular case?" It's a
- 16:53million-dollar question. Stacy was
- 16:55beautiful. She was young, but her
- 16:57husband was a police officer and was
- 17:00much older than her. And I think that
- 17:02that played into the suspicion. It had a
- 17:06lot to do with money, greed, sex, power.
- 17:10I mean, all the elements are at play
- 17:12here.
- 17:19After the first three or four days, we
- 17:21sent investigators to Bowling Brook uh
- 17:24to interview Drew Peterson. He said that
- 17:27he had also gone out and searched for
- 17:28that evening to no avail. We also sent
- 17:32crime scene technicians along to the
- 17:35Peterson residence, which Drew
- 17:38voluntarily gave consent for us to do.
- 17:42But there was little to no physical
- 17:47evidence. At the very beginning, Drew
- 17:50was hiding. I'm sorry, sir. I'm sorry.
- 17:52He taped typing paper up over all his
- 17:55windows and its door. He would only open
- 17:58it, you know, maybe an inch and peek out
- 18:00with one
- 18:01eye. But it wasn't long after that he
- 18:04was wallowing in the media, wallowing in
- 18:07the limelight. He loved it. Please go
- 18:08home. Please leave me alone. Please
- 18:10don't get involved in my little world.
- 18:13What's going on today? Yes, we went to
- 18:15McDonald's. They had Happy Meals and the
- 18:18Gri Sandwiches. How's that? That's
- 18:20what's going on today. He'd come outside
- 18:23with his own camera. And so while the
- 18:25media's filming him, he's filming them.
- 18:28He just like he taunted. He played games
- 18:30with the press. Watch this.
- 18:34He loved the media attention. I'm going
- 18:37to come camp myself in front of your
- 18:39house and see if you like it. We'd go on
- 18:42the morning talk shows on the broadcast
- 18:44networks. He was, you know, just loving
- 18:46it. I believe I was a suspect from the
- 18:48beginning when they first started
- 18:49talking to me.
- 18:56My name is Joel Brodzky. I'm a criminal
- 18:58defense attorney in Chicago, Illinois.
- 19:02Why did you agree to do this interview
- 19:04today?
- 19:11Um, there's a lot that's unknown about
- 19:15Drew Peterson and a lot that's unknown
- 19:18about the case and a lot that I've been
- 19:21silent about for the last 10 years that
- 19:23I I finally want to get out there. They
- 19:26tried to put a gag order, but I think uh
- 19:30enough time has gone by. I don't
- 19:32consider myself bound by that gag order
- 19:34anymore. Do you remember where you were
- 19:36and what you were doing when you first
- 19:38heard the name Drew Peterson? So I had
- 19:41heard about it, but what really brought
- 19:43it to my attention was when my wife
- 19:45downstairs, she yelled up says, "Joel,
- 19:46Drew Peterson's on the Today Show." So I
- 19:49think this was fabricated as a lot of
- 19:51things have been. My first thought was,
- 19:53"What an idiot." I mean, the first thing
- 19:55you tell your client is if he's um, you
- 19:58know, under suspicion for a crime is,
- 20:00you know, shut up. If there was anything
- 20:02that happened to her, you know, it
- 20:03should be found out. And then at the
- 20:04end, Drew asks for a lawyer. I come home
- 20:07that evening and my wife said, "You know
- 20:09what? I called the um the Today Show and
- 20:11I left your name and
- 20:13number." Okay. Um two days later, he
- 20:17called me and he gave me a a corner
- 20:19about two blocks from where he lives. He
- 20:21goes, "Just drive there and wait. I'll
- 20:22be
- 20:23there." And we talked for about 45
- 20:26minutes. After that, Drew said, "Yep, I
- 20:28I want you." And from that point on, I
- 20:31was Drew's lawyer.
- 20:35But every morning I would tell him,
- 20:36"Stay away from the media. Don't talk."
- 20:39Drew it was like a moth to a
- 20:41flame. He couldn't stay away. And every
- 20:44afternoon I would see his face on the TV
- 20:47talking to the media. Well, I think all
- 20:49the people who were kept pretending to
- 20:51be my friends that come out. I think
- 20:52they were all uh financially motivated.
- 20:55Drew's idea was the media to him was
- 20:58like a toy. He liked messing with them.
- 21:01Can you Can you make it simple? Sooner
- 21:03or later, it became, "If you can't beat
- 21:04them, join them." I think it's time to
- 21:06let it go.
- 21:09By this time, the search for Stacy was
- 21:12turning from a rescue into a recovery of
- 21:16potentially a body. And with Drew
- 21:17Peterson as the prime suspect, the
- 21:20investigators really started to drill
- 21:22down on the night of October 28th. And
- 21:25by using his cell phone and the pings to
- 21:28local towers, they were able to
- 21:31determine that he drove um a little less
- 21:33than 15 minutes away from his home late
- 21:35on a Sunday night to the Illinois
- 21:38Michigan Canal. Now, why would anybody
- 21:40be out at midnight driving to a desolate
- 21:42canal, a place where you could dump
- 21:43anything like a body?
- 21:47We believe based on phone records that
- 21:50Drew Peterson drove to an area near the
- 21:53canal
- 21:55We had teams that were actually doing
- 21:57extensive searches that were searching
- 22:00the forest preserves, lots that were
- 22:03abandoned, areas along the canal.
- 22:06Officers searched on land and by boat.
- 22:09They used dogs. They were looking for
- 22:11clues in areas where investigators
- 22:13believe Stacy's body may have been left.
- 22:16There was reportedly cell phone activity
- 22:18from Stacy's phone in this area. The
- 22:21canal is the most unforgiving
- 22:24environment in the area. It's the
- 22:27perfect environment to hide a body with
- 22:30all the debris that's located
- 22:33there, but there was
- 22:36[Music]
- 22:38nothing. I talked to one of the divers
- 22:40who told me that it was feudal. That
- 22:42diver told me he thinks it was really
- 22:44done for the publicity to show people
- 22:46that they were trying to do something
- 22:47more than anything.
- 22:51Investigators tackle a problem from all
- 22:53angles. And so, while the divers are
- 22:55down looking for a potential body, the
- 22:58investigators are actually looking at
- 23:00Stacy's last movements before she
- 23:02disappeared. And lo and behold, they
- 23:03discover that a few months before she
- 23:05vanished, she'd been in contact with a
- 23:08guy that she liked in high school.
- 23:11investigators pulled the phone records
- 23:13and Stacy had several phone calls and
- 23:17text messages uh to Scott Rosettto.
- 23:21Scott hadn't heard from her in a long
- 23:23time and then all of a sudden in the
- 23:25fall of 2007, he hears from Stacy. She's
- 23:29not happy in her marriage. They start
- 23:31texting a lot and they meet up a couple
- 23:33times.
- 23:34Drew suspected that there might be
- 23:37something more to the
- 23:40relationship and Drew was probably
- 23:44correct on that.
- 23:59Scott Rosettto was interviewed several
- 24:01times by investigators.
- 24:05Most of the time we were together was
- 24:06her just talking about, you know, like
- 24:08relationship type thing stuff. She said
- 24:10she wanted a divorce and it was going to
- 24:11work out.
- 24:14The initial theory was that Drew
- 24:15discovered these racy text messages
- 24:18between Stacy and Scott
- 24:24Rosetta in the fall of 2007, like
- 24:27August, September 2007.
- 24:37Scott said that Stacy reached out to him
- 24:39out of the blue, that she found his
- 24:41number and gave him a call. They went
- 24:43out to a Denny's for lunch
- 24:47together. He said Drew showed up, which
- 24:50was strange in itself. He was very
- 24:53likely tracking Stacy's movements.
- 24:56They really were flirtatious. But Scott
- 24:59never went there. He says he had a
- 25:01girlfriend, right? But Jaru, he's
- 25:04surveilling her. He's stalking
- 25:07her. He's in uniform and he kind of
- 25:10stares at
- 25:11Scott. He was very
- 25:15intimidating. He asked for some
- 25:17identification.
- 25:19So, you have to picture this from from
- 25:21Scott's point of view. Uh he's sitting
- 25:23across from this beautiful girl and sure
- 25:26there'd been some text flirting, you
- 25:28know, going going on, but but then
- 25:29suddenly in walks this cop service
- 25:33pistol and everything and he demands ID.
- 25:35What does he want ID for? And then he
- 25:38realizes, terrific, this guy's now got
- 25:41my
- 25:42address. Stacy was very upset. She
- 25:45walked out with Drew and then came back
- 25:47in very upset.
- 25:52The last time they texted was like 11
- 25:54o'clock or so that Sunday morning and uh
- 25:57she didn't answer any texts after
- 26:00that. But when Stacy disappeared, Scott
- 26:03Rosettto was at work. So he had an
- 26:06alibi. He was at work on Sunday, October
- 26:0928th,
- 26:122007. Investigators don't have much to
- 26:15go on. They don't have tips and and
- 26:17leads and this is starting to look like
- 26:18a dead end when out of the blue of all
- 26:22places they get a heads up from the
- 26:24Chicago field office of the FBI. It
- 26:27turns out a tip was called in about a
- 26:29guy who might know something and it
- 26:31turns out the guy's in the hospital
- 26:33after having tried to kill himself.
- 26:35Another person that we were interested
- 26:37in talking to was Drew Peterson's
- 26:40stepbrother Thomas Morphe. The first
- 26:43interview was done from a hospital room.
- 26:47He needed medical help and he felt very
- 26:52guilty about what he had done.
- 26:55Tom Morphe was so upset over what he
- 26:58believed he had assisted in that he
- 27:02actually tried to kill himself the next
- 27:04day or so. He took a lot of pills and
- 27:07landed in the hospital.
- 27:11And according to Morphe, he helped Drew
- 27:14Peterson remove something from the
- 27:18bedroom down the stairs and into the
- 27:20four-wheel drive
- 27:23[Music]
- 27:30SUV. How Morphe honestly knows he helped
- 27:33after the fact carry my sister out of
- 27:35that
- 27:39house. And that's why Tom tried killing
- 27:42himself.
- 27:44So now we might actually have something.
- 27:47Stacy was petite, 5'2, 100 lb soaking
- 27:50wet, so she easily could have fit into a
- 27:52container like the one Tom Morphe was
- 27:56describing. At the same time, the media
- 27:59is out there like a hungry pack of
- 28:01tigers, and suddenly there's this raw
- 28:04piece of meat. Every reporter out there
- 28:06wants to know more about this blue
- 28:09container. Drew Peterson denies reports
- 28:11that a relative helped him move a
- 28:12container that held his missing wife's
- 28:14body.
- 28:17The media laser focused in on the blue
- 28:19container because we had nothing else to
- 28:21go on. It was the only clue we had.
- 28:24Everybody is talking about this blue
- 28:25container, but Drew Peterson vehemently
- 28:29denies Morphy's account.
- 28:32Relative of yours saying you helped
- 28:34carry a rectangular container out of
- 28:35your home on October 28th. I have no
- 28:38idea what anybody's talking about like
- 28:40that. Warm to the touch? No. He says he
- 28:43believes that he helped you dispose of
- 28:44your wife's body. Can you at least
- 28:46respond to that?
- 28:48Not at all.
- 28:54Drew Peterson had motive to kill Stacy
- 28:57Peterson because of an imminent divorce
- 29:00where he could lose his home and he felt
- 29:04she was having an affair with Scott
- 29:08Rosettto. Stacy was a very sexy, you
- 29:11know, at that point 24 year old
- 29:14woman and Drew was jealous. I think
- 29:18there was just something really bizarre
- 29:22and dangerous about
- 29:28Drew. We learned after looking into the
- 29:32background of Drew Peterson that he had
- 29:35been married several times before. We
- 29:37learned that Drew was sometimes violent
- 29:41and that there was definitely marital
- 29:43issues.
- 29:44[Music]
- 29:50Harold Brown was Drew's first wife. She
- 29:53was great. I was a freshman in high
- 29:55school and she was a senior and she sat
- 29:59at the cool table. So that first
- 30:00freshman year of school was very cool
- 30:02because I was Carol's future
- 30:05brother-in-law. And it was sad to see
- 30:08them get divorced cuz she was a really
- 30:11good person.
- 30:14In
- 30:151974, the last thing that anyone would
- 30:18think is that Drew Peterson would become
- 30:20a household name. There are almost no
- 30:22photos of Drew and Carol together, but
- 30:25in their wedding photo, which was later
- 30:26published by the Chicago Sun Times, they
- 30:29certainly do look
- 30:31happy. There was no indications of any
- 30:34kind of domestic violence. But in my
- 30:36opinion, when you're speaking with
- 30:38someone of truce nature, a narcissist at
- 30:41their core, they're not going to really
- 30:44pay any attention to what other people
- 30:46think. As long as he was happy, that's
- 30:49truly all that
- 30:51mattered. With narcissists, it's almost
- 30:54like they can tell that someone is is is
- 30:58open to their
- 30:59manipulations, either through trauma or
- 31:03upbringing.
- 31:09Drew Peterson's second marriage was to a
- 31:10woman who at the time was uh Victoria
- 31:13Red
- 31:14Cavitz. She was 23. He was 28. They were
- 31:18married for about 9 years. They had no
- 31:24children. Drew was incredibly
- 31:26controlling with her, but she had a big
- 31:29personality which was a little bit
- 31:31different than some of the other women
- 31:32that he had married. So, I think that
- 31:34there was a lot of contention in that
- 31:35relationship because Vicki stood up for
- 31:42[Music]
- 31:44herself. She just wanted out. She didn't
- 31:47want anything from him. I think that's
- 31:50what allowed her to walk out of the
- 31:52marriage. And before he's even done with
- 31:55his divorce from Vicki, he meets
- 31:57Kathleen
- 31:58[Music]
- 32:02Savio and they're already together and
- 32:04he's introducing her to the family and
- 32:06he doesn't tell her he's married. He
- 32:09makes it seem like he's
- 32:15single. I am Nick Savio, the youngest
- 32:18brother of Kathleen Savio.
- 32:24I
- 32:25remember her going on dates with him and
- 32:28I
- 32:28remember the day that she told dad she
- 32:32was going to get married to him. And I
- 32:34remember dad saying, "I'm not walking
- 32:36you down the
- 32:37aisle." Dad didn't care for
- 32:40Drew. He said, "You never bring him
- 32:42around." And all of a sudden, you're
- 32:43marrying him. Why are we such a rush
- 32:46here? And uh I guess come to find out
- 32:48that she was pregnant.
- 32:52And I think she was just in a rush to
- 32:56have kids to start a family. And I think
- 32:58Drew was able to give that to
- 33:00her. They have two children. But
- 33:03Kathleen became isolated, became not the
- 33:07person that we
- 33:19[Music]
- 33:21knew. It's a It's a hard picture to
- 33:25swallow.
- 33:26[Music]
- 33:33And she would say things, "It's not that
- 33:36bad. It's It definitely
- 33:41is." She would go to parties with black
- 33:43eyes. Try to cover up makeup and maybe
- 33:46say, "I hit a
- 33:47curb." We all knew what was going on.
- 33:49You don't get a black eye from just
- 33:51falling down. It doesn't work that way.
- 33:58[Music]
- 34:03Drew Peterson claims that he never hit
- 34:06any of his four wives. U that it would
- 34:08have put his job as a police officer in
- 34:10jeopardy. But there are studies from
- 34:13that time period that suggest 40% of law
- 34:17enforcement have families or wives who
- 34:20actually experience domestic abuse. So
- 34:22it's a little hard to take that argument
- 34:23seriously.
- 34:26But that's the exact case that he brings
- 34:29to the media. And a perfect example of
- 34:31that is his appearance on CNN's Larry
- 34:34King in 2008. If I get involved in a
- 34:37domestic situation where I'm physical
- 34:39with a wife, I'll lose my job and I
- 34:42would never even care even come close to
- 34:44risking that. People have to think,
- 34:46well, what is going on with his family
- 34:48that they couldn't do anything? Drew had
- 34:51different categories of people in his
- 34:53life and he kept them separated. And so
- 34:57because we weren't all part of one
- 34:59group, we couldn't compare
- 35:01notes. And in going through all of this,
- 35:04we learned all of these things that had
- 35:05been going on that we weren't aware of.
- 35:13I think she lost all hope and
- 35:14everything.
- 35:17We believe that the people he worked
- 35:19with covered up for him for a lot of
- 35:20years there.
- 35:22[Music]
- 35:25Kathleen Savio and Drew Peterson's
- 35:27marriage uh certainly had its ups and
- 35:30downs like many marriages, but they had
- 35:32two beautiful boys. They had a nice
- 35:34house on a street in a safe Chicago area
- 35:36suburb. He had a good job. So, it's sort
- 35:39of odd how you could just be going about
- 35:41your life and then something so
- 35:44incredibly random just comes in and
- 35:47upends
- 35:49it. Stories came out that my sister was
- 35:53being cheated on.
- 35:55She got a letter
- 35:57[Music]
- 36:01from the anonymous letter.
- 36:05somebody cared enough to actually send
- 36:07this to
- 36:10her. You are probably well aware that
- 36:12your husband is having an affair. You
- 36:14may already have all this information,
- 36:15but if not, you will need to deem it to
- 36:17prevent any further embarrassment and
- 36:19disgrace to you and your family. This
- 36:21affair has been going on for several
- 36:22months. Because of her age, 17 and
- 36:25because of Drew's age and his
- 36:26occupation, he holds a position of
- 36:29authority over here. Drew could be
- 36:32charged criminally for this intimate
- 36:34involvement with this
- 36:39minor. My sister's worst fears come to
- 36:43fruition, but it had to be confirmed
- 36:45from an anonymous letter that her
- 36:48marriage is basically over falling
- 36:52apart. I think she was like 32, 33 and
- 36:55this girl's 16 years younger than her.
- 37:00And that was really bothersome.
- 37:06My name is Harry Smith and I was
- 37:08Kathleen Savio's prior family law
- 37:12attorney. That letter she received
- 37:14incited Kathleen to confront him. She
- 37:17asked me to represent her against Drew.
- 37:21The Savio Peterson divorce was extremely
- 37:25acrimonious.
- 37:26There would be fights every time there
- 37:29was a handover of the
- 37:31children. Once Droop began slamming on
- 37:34the horn and screaming for Kathleen to
- 37:37come out and get the boys from his
- 37:40truck. Stacy, very pregnant, is in the
- 37:43front passenger
- 37:45seat. Kathleen comes out. Stacy gets out
- 37:49and the fight begins with his children
- 37:51watching from car seats.
- 37:54Kathleen wasn't perfect. She would not
- 37:57back down from a fight. Kathleen
- 38:00attacked a pregnant woman. And mind you,
- 38:03Drew is a police officer during this
- 38:06time. So, he grabbed Kathleen, put her
- 38:10in an armbar, and held her face down on
- 38:13the front lawn of the driveway until
- 38:15Bowler Bowling Brook police showed up
- 38:17and arrested Kathleen.
- 38:20She was convinced that Drew Peterson was
- 38:23manipulating the system and that her
- 38:25voice wasn't being heard.
- 38:27Here's the thing. Sometimes divorces are
- 38:29so messy that judges will actually grant
- 38:32the divorce and allow people to move on
- 38:34with their lives, get married again,
- 38:36move across the country, etc. Um, and
- 38:39then deal with the financial part
- 38:44afterwards. And as was the case for Drew
- 38:47Peterson and Kathleen Savio, they were
- 38:49divorced. Drew married Stacy, but the
- 38:52finances with Kathleen weren't settled.
- 38:55And if things go the way many divorces
- 38:58go, Drew knows he's about to lose his
- 39:00[Music]
- 39:04shirt. On March 1st, 2004, Drew Peterson
- 39:09uh is expected to drop the children off
- 39:10at Kathleen Stavio's house.
- 39:15He arrives at the house, knocks on the
- 39:17door. There's no
- 39:20answer. The neighbors arrive as well.
- 39:23Drew unlocks the
- 39:25door. He allows the neighbors to rush
- 39:30in. The neighbors find Kathleen Salvio
- 39:33dead in the
- 39:38bathtub. Drew heard screams from inside
- 39:40the house, so he ran in, ran up the
- 39:42stairs.
- 39:44saw Kathleen dead in the tub, grabbed
- 39:46her, got his DNA all over, and they
- 39:49called the
- 39:51police. That evening, Illinois State
- 39:54Police investigators were sent to the
- 39:56Peterson home. There were crime scene
- 39:59photos taken of that
- 40:03scene. And her body was found laying in
- 40:07that bathtub.
- 40:10It was believed that she had slipped and
- 40:13hit her head on the bathtub and she died
- 40:16from
- 40:20drowning. I remember our older sister
- 40:22calling me at about 4 in the
- 40:24morning. I remember saying, "Hey, uh,
- 40:26your sister sister's gone." Like,
- 40:29"What?
- 40:32What? She's gone. They found her in the
- 40:34bathtub." I'm like, "What?
- 40:40I just remember sitting there
- 40:42like, "She's too young. Not like
- 40:46[Music]
- 40:54this." By his account, there's Drew
- 40:57looking down at his dead wife in the
- 41:00bathtub. While at the same time, let's
- 41:02not forget he is still in a lawsuit
- 41:06where he has to pay child support, pay
- 41:08alimony, split the house, and probably
- 41:11split his pension for the 11 years that
- 41:13they were
- 41:14married. Now he doesn't have to write
- 41:16those checks anymore.
- 41:18As we finally prepare for trial, which
- 41:21Drew has avoided on two occasions,
- 41:24Kathleen has an accident and is now
- 41:27dead.
- 41:29So when he told us Kathleen had died, we
- 41:32thought, well, isn't that convenient for
- 41:34[Music]
- 41:42you? When Stacy disappeared, law
- 41:46enforcement immediately took another
- 41:48look at Kathleen's death because two
- 41:52wives gone in like just like 3 4
- 41:57years that's like a little weird. So
- 42:00they took a look back at that third
- 42:02marriage to say hm maybe there is
- 42:03something here that we missed.
- 42:06I think that the most important document
- 42:08we had was the autopsy report. I went to
- 42:11my expert who's Dr. Michael Bodton. And
- 42:13I said, "Dr. Bodton, please take a look
- 42:15at this." The fact that she was found in
- 42:17a dry bathtub. There was no evidence of
- 42:20water. And if you look statistically at
- 42:22the number of people who die in
- 42:23bathtubs, it's almost zero. All of these
- 42:27factors together, this looked
- 42:29suspicious. He said, "Steph, this is not
- 42:32an accident." Dr. Bon believed that
- 42:35Kathleen Salvio had been
- 42:37murdered and literally all hell broke
- 42:40loose.
- 42:42There was pressure to exume Kathleen
- 42:44Safio's body and perform an additional
- 42:46autopsy.
- 42:50In consultation with the prosecutor's
- 42:52office, we reopened the Kathleen Savio
- 42:56investigation and have a second autopsy
- 42:59completed. During the investigation of
- 43:02Stacy Peterson, new information
- 43:05concerning the Savio death investigation
- 43:08came to light and that is being looked
- 43:11at in great detail which has caused the
- 43:15uh reopening of the Savio investigation
- 43:18by the state's attorney's office and the
- 43:20state
- 43:24police. When I heard that they reopened
- 43:26this case, I had my own little anxiety
- 43:29attack.
- 43:33I remember August 31st, 2007 was my last
- 43:37meeting with Stacy. We met at the
- 43:39Starbucks down the street from the
- 43:40church. She looked very serious and very
- 43:43scared and she just blurts out, "Drew
- 43:46killed Kathleen Savio in 2004.
- 43:52Stacy told me that there was one night
- 43:54when Drew walked in and he was wearing
- 43:56all black head to toe. And she looks at
- 44:00him and she said, "Well, where were
- 44:01you?" And he looked at her and he said,
- 44:03"You know where I
- 44:05was." And he didn't say anything else.
- 44:07He just started taking his clothes off
- 44:09and put him putting them in the washing
- 44:10machine. He sat her down and he said,
- 44:12"Stacy, in a few hours the police are
- 44:15going to come and if you tell them what
- 44:18I tell you to say, this will be the
- 44:21perfect
- 44:26crime." I was still pretty new in my
- 44:29career. I had no idea of what to do in
- 44:32this situation. I asked her, "What do
- 44:35you want me to do with this?" And she
- 44:36said, "I don't want you to do anything.
- 44:38I just want you to know." I think she
- 44:40was very very concerned that the same
- 44:43thing was going to happen to
- 44:46her. Drew had both a military background
- 44:50and then he had the police
- 44:53background. I think regarding Kathy, he
- 44:56took months to plan everything
- 44:59out. But how can a guy that uh
- 45:03meticulously plans everything out make
- 45:04these two mistakes? the mistake of not
- 45:07having Kathy cremated and not sending
- 45:11Stacy away for the
- 45:15[Music]
- 45:18weekend. The family clearly was
- 45:21concerned because the first time they
- 45:23had classified the death as an accident.
- 45:26So they came to me and said, "Well, we
- 45:27don't trust them. We don't trust the
- 45:29decision they're going to make because
- 45:30clearly the first time they didn't make
- 45:31the right decision." So I circled back
- 45:33around with Dr. Biden and I said, "Would
- 45:35you consider doing an autopsy privately
- 45:37on behalf of the family?" And he said,
- 45:40"Yes." The family agreed and that's what
- 45:45happened. Was my first time being at an
- 45:53autopsy and I
- 45:58remember they brought her body out. So,
- 46:01I stood with my back and I remember the
- 46:06[Music]
- 46:09smell. I stayed laser focused on Dr.
- 46:12Bond. I wouldn't even look down cuz I
- 46:14had a job to do.
- 46:19He concluded that Kathleen Salavio had
- 46:21been murdered based on simplistic things
- 46:25like there was scratches and and and uh
- 46:28marks on her chest, on her back, and
- 46:31there was a big blunt force trauma on
- 46:34the back of the
- 46:35head. Then they were forced to conduct a
- 46:39state authorized autopsy for their own
- 46:42purposes.
- 46:44The state had their own autopsy and came
- 46:47to the exact same conclusion. This
- 46:50became the autopsy that people really
- 46:52relied
- 46:53[Music]
- 46:58upon. Somebody listened. Finally,
- 47:01somebody cared enough to make the right
- 47:04decision. Finally, something went our
- 47:06way.
- 47:09Drew hasn't been charged yet with
- 47:11Kathleen's murder, but it's not looking
- 47:14good for him. He felt like he was
- 47:16teflon. He has committed the perfect
- 47:19crimes. I can kill you and make it look
- 47:22like an
- 47:23accident. Now it was a homicide.
- 47:27[Music]
- 47:39[Music]
- 47:44Drew Peterson was not charged yet for
- 47:46the murder of Kathleen Savio. We believe
- 47:50we had the right guy. Now we now had to
- 47:52prove it. We did have a body and the
- 47:55second autopsy determined that Kathleen
- 47:57Savio died by
- 47:59homicide and we had the records of
- 48:03domestic
- 48:05violence. If the state's attorney had
- 48:07what I would call wavos, he would have
- 48:09brought a charge on Stacy. But knowing
- 48:11the state's attorney, Jim Glasco, if
- 48:13there was going to be a charge, it was
- 48:15going to be with Kathy Savio because
- 48:18there was a body.
- 48:20Now, mind you, he hadn't been charged
- 48:22yet.
- 48:23Drew is appearing on these radio shows
- 48:26and TV shows. At the same time, a grand
- 48:29jury is deciding his fate and whether or
- 48:32not he is going to be charged with the
- 48:33murder of his third wife, Kathleen
- 48:36Savio.
- 48:38It was pitched to a radio station in
- 48:41Chicago to win a date with Drew. Can you
- 48:43imagine?
- 48:45Drew was certainly having a good time
- 48:47with all of this. In fact, he'd become a
- 48:49regular on Mancow Mueller's uh toprated
- 48:53Chicago radio show. It's a shock jock
- 48:55morning zoo show. But I don't think that
- 48:58Drew Peterson at any point was betting
- 49:00on Stacy's family listening in.
- 49:05I was working
- 49:06and I just heard him talking on the
- 49:10show. I got sick of it and I just I'm
- 49:13calling in. Cassandra. Yes. You're Stacy
- 49:16Peterson's sister. Correct. He was
- 49:19making it out to be some kind of
- 49:21amusement for
- 49:23himself. It was just disgusting. What'd
- 49:26you do to my sister? Not a thing. You
- 49:28killed her after she got off the phone
- 49:30between 10:15 and 10:59. You will pay
- 49:34your back, Drew. Drew, just keep talking
- 49:35cuz you keep digging yourself in a
- 49:37deeper hole.
- 49:39Well, I never heard a accused murderer
- 49:41going on the radio to joke about things,
- 49:43much less the family calling up to
- 49:45confront them. I I mean this was all new
- 49:47to everyone. I think
- 49:50it was very surreal.
- 49:52A mother of two has been missing.
- 49:54Friends and relatives say they're
- 49:55convinced she's the victim of foul play.
- 49:58We knew that the arrest was imminent and
- 50:01that we had to make sure that this was
- 50:04handled the right way.
- 50:14I had gotten tips that Drew was going to
- 50:15be arrested. They said be at his house
- 50:17early in the morning. Drew had to have
- 50:20known the hammer was about to
- 50:22fall. The police had orchestrated a very
- 50:26careful arrest.
- 50:31They pulled him over. They got him out
- 50:32of the car. They handcuffed him. But he
- 50:34knew where the cameras were. He knew
- 50:35where to look. as he was being taken off
- 50:38into the car, screaming and yelling
- 50:40things to the media.
- 50:43There's a famous video of him in a red
- 50:45jumpsuit and he's shackled and he's got,
- 50:49you know, the his wrists are also cuffed
- 50:51and he's like looking up. He's looking
- 50:53up at like some cameras and and he's
- 50:55like not taking it seriously.
- 51:00[Music]
- 51:08any look at this plane. It was like, "Oh
- 51:12my god, what's wrong with this guy? You
- 51:15don't take this serious yet?" I recall
- 51:18Drew's
- 51:19arrest. Happy moment. Happy. Happy. But
- 51:22yet, he's here smiling when he's
- 51:24arrested. Another shot to us. He thinks
- 51:28he's above the law. He's going to walk
- 51:29away with this. It's not not acceptable
- 51:32to us. It never was.
- 51:37[Music]
- 51:39I had planned to do a appearance in all
- 51:42three uh major morning shows in New
- 51:44York. The point to get across is look it
- 51:46whatever you think may have happened.
- 51:48There's no evidence. Pearsy is not
- 51:50evidence. It's unreliable. That's why
- 51:52they usually don't let it in in court.
- 51:53So, you know, that's it. You know, that
- 51:56was our that was all we were trying to
- 51:57get across.
- 51:59I got a call just as the plane was on
- 52:01the runway. Drew had been arrested. So I
- 52:04went to New York, uh, did the shows.
- 52:06First of all, somebody that's accused
- 52:07doesn't have to prove their innocence.
- 52:08The state has to prove their guilt
- 52:09beyond a reasonable doubt. And everybody
- 52:11that's ever been found u not guilty was
- 52:14initially indicted. So being indicted is
- 52:16not evidence of anything. Um, I think
- 52:18the main point in this case is going to
- 52:20be forensic.
- 52:24And then get on the plane back. He needs
- 52:27a lawyer.
- 52:30You know, I love them. You
- 52:31know, if you had a uh a family dog that
- 52:35was out biting all the neighbor kids,
- 52:36you may love it dearly, but you got to
- 52:38help put it away. Put it down. And
- 52:41that's kind of how I felt with Drew.
- 52:44Bail for Drew Peterson is set at $20
- 52:47million, which is effectively the judge
- 52:50saying, "You're not going anywhere until
- 52:52this thing goes to trial." And that's
- 52:54where the really hard part began because
- 52:57from the time that Drew Peterson was
- 52:59arrested in 2009, every single legal
- 53:03wrangling and complex
- 53:05maneuver that just ate up the next 5
- 53:10years. Now Drew Peterson's been charged
- 53:12and the state is getting ready for
- 53:17trial. They've got to get their evidence
- 53:20lined up. The question
- 53:22is, is it proof beyond a reasonable
- 53:25doubt? And will 12 jurors be
- 53:38convinced? It was going to be an uphill
- 53:40battle to prosecute Drew Peterson for
- 53:42Kathleen Savio's murder. At the time of
- 53:45her death, the state police didn't
- 53:47collect any evidence. At the time of his
- 53:49trial, there was no evidence, no
- 53:50physical evidence. Fingerprints, a
- 53:52smoking gun, I I mean, DNA, they had
- 53:55none of that.
- 53:57This was not a slam dunk case by
- 53:59anybody's
- 54:02standards. There were several challenges
- 54:04in the case. One was that the jury could
- 54:07never learn or become knowledgeable in
- 54:11the fact that Stacy Peterson was
- 54:13missing. I think it was the elephant in
- 54:15the room.
- 54:17But so much of the
- 54:21prosecution of Drew for Kathleen Savio's
- 54:24death is related to Stacy's
- 54:25disappearance because that's why it was
- 54:27reopened because she disappeared and
- 54:29jurors can't know that,
- 54:31right? The two were so intertwined that
- 54:34it had to have been a a huge challenge
- 54:37for the prosecution. You can't always
- 54:40get jurors who have been living under a
- 54:43rock and know nothing about the case
- 54:44when it's high-profile like
- 54:57this. On July 24th of 2012, a jury is
- 55:02actually seated for the Drew Peterson
- 55:05trial. And it starts to look as though
- 55:07this might actually be a normal trial.
- 55:10But this is Drew
- 55:12Peterson and anything can happen and the
- 55:16media goes hog wild.
- 55:26Turned into a circus again. There was
- 55:29this this almost carnival atmosphere.
- 55:32Are they trying to have expedition? How
- 55:34you been?
- 55:36Don't give a song. I remember the trial
- 55:39beginning and us getting there and it
- 55:42was like a scene out of a movie. Um, you
- 55:45never think you're going to be this
- 55:47close to cameras, all this
- 55:49stuff. You realize how national it
- 55:51really was. They were holding lottery
- 55:53drawings out there for people that could
- 55:55be at that case.
- 55:58One of the most anticipated witnesses at
- 56:01this trial was Neil Shy.
- 56:04He was Stacy's pastor and friend. And he
- 56:07was also one of the only people that
- 56:10Stacy had told about the night Drew came
- 56:12home and told her he killed Kathleen
- 56:15Savio.
- 56:17Drew Peterson's defense team did not
- 56:19want me to be able to testify. And it
- 56:21was this long drawn out thing trying to
- 56:23keep my testimony out. They said, "Oh,
- 56:25it's just hearsay. It's hearsay." But
- 56:27the judge at the time ruled that most of
- 56:30what I had to say wasn't hearsay because
- 56:32what he said is that based on a
- 56:34prepoundonderance of the evidence, it's
- 56:36very likely that Drew killed Stacy so
- 56:39that she couldn't testify about Kathleen
- 56:42Salvio's
- 56:43murder. It was extremely strange for me
- 56:46to be testifying on Kathleen's behalf. I
- 56:49think my testimony was pretty important.
- 56:54I believe Neil Shy's not lying, but I
- 56:57can't question the person that told him.
- 57:00So
- 57:03um look at
- 57:06uh I say trying to be careful here.
- 57:12Um I I believe that Pastor Shy wasn't
- 57:16lying. That's what Stacy told him.
- 57:20Right. What I'm saying is that as a
- 57:23lawyer, I couldn't cross-examine Stacy
- 57:25and what her motivation was to say that.
- 57:27[Music]
- 57:30In all, the prosecution calls 81
- 57:33witnesses, but then in a in a surprise
- 57:35move, they decide to wave their right to
- 57:39call the attorney who was involved in
- 57:42both the divorce for Kathleen and for
- 57:47Stacy. It's an attorney named Harry
- 57:49Smith.
- 57:52We didn't want to call Harry Smith, but
- 57:55Drew insisted. Drew wanted us to call
- 57:58him. And if we don't call a witness, the
- 58:01client wants us to call. I can guarantee
- 58:04you if he's convicted, he's going to
- 58:06call us out. He's going to say, "You
- 58:07guys didn't call a witness. I wanted to
- 58:09call that going to give good evidence."
- 58:12And that's how that happened.
- 58:19[Music]
- 58:20I testified that Stacy
- 58:23called me. She told me that she was
- 58:28considering leaving Drew and she wanted
- 58:30advice from me as a divorce attorney.
- 58:34I told Stacy Peterson that I suspected
- 58:39it was a conflict for me to represent
- 58:42her against Drew considering my
- 58:45representation of Kathleen Savio. She
- 58:48said that was okay. She just wanted to
- 58:50ask me a couple of questions and then I
- 58:53testified that Stacy told me within 2
- 58:57minutes of asking for a divorce consult
- 59:00that Drew killed Kathleen.
- 59:02I could see the reaction of the jury
- 59:04when I testified. I can't believe we got
- 59:07the opportunity to offer that evidence
- 59:09to a jury.
- 59:15The burden of proof is of course on the
- 59:17state and as their list of witnesses
- 59:21gets smaller and smaller, the nation is
- 59:23on the edge of their seat and the
- 59:25cameras are there to capture every
- 59:28moment of this drama. It was a long
- 59:30trial and then the judge gives the
- 59:32instructions to the jury. The jury goes
- 59:34back. So, it's just sitting and waiting
- 59:37and what's going through your mind is um
- 59:39well, if you've done enough trials, uh
- 59:41nothing because you realize that there's
- 59:43no way to predict what the jury is going
- 59:45to do.
- 59:48I remember sitting outside and there's a
- 59:52lot of buzz going on with the case. All
- 59:54of a sudden, I remember saying around
- 59:57after getting lunch, "We have a verdict.
- 1:00:00You got to get up to the
- 1:00:02[Music]
- 1:00:04courtroom." I remember that agonizing 15
- 1:00:08to 20 minutes just waiting for the judge
- 1:00:10to come. Agonizing and waiting for the
- 1:00:12jury to show up. You see these 12 empty
- 1:00:14juror seats and you're just like the
- 1:00:16fate is all in their hands. You're just
- 1:00:19sitting there with this ball of anxiety.
- 1:00:23One of the worst feelings I've ever had
- 1:00:24in the
- 1:00:25[Music]
- 1:00:37world. Jury comes back. Judge comes in,
- 1:00:40says, "I'll
- 1:00:42rise. Have you come to a verdict?" Jury
- 1:00:44says we the jury
- 1:00:48find defendant Drew
- 1:00:51Peterson
- 1:00:56guilty. Immediate
- 1:00:59tears. Immediate tears. It was like 8
- 1:01:03years. Somebody finally heard her.
- 1:01:09[Music]
- 1:01:14Justice may have been served, but again,
- 1:01:17it's a shame that Stacy had to disappear
- 1:01:18for this to
- 1:01:20[Music]
- 1:01:27happen. I don't disagree with the uh
- 1:01:30verdict. And not long after the guilty
- 1:01:34verdict, I withdrew resigned from the
- 1:01:36case.
- 1:01:37[Music]
- 1:01:41As if the walls weren't closing in
- 1:01:43enough, Drew Peterson had yet to learn
- 1:01:45how many years he was going to spend in
- 1:01:48prison for this murder. His little house
- 1:01:51of cards that he'd been building all his
- 1:01:52life certainly coming crashing
- 1:01:58down. So in February 2013, Drew Peterson
- 1:02:02is sentenced and the judge gave him 38
- 1:02:05years. Drew had an outburst in the
- 1:02:08courtroom.
- 1:02:12Yes, you did. This was a guy who was
- 1:02:15always so jocular and jovial and joking
- 1:02:18around. But the reality had to have sunk
- 1:02:21in. It's like, wow, Buster, you're going
- 1:02:23away for the rest of your life.
- 1:02:27[Music]
- 1:02:29The Savio family could rest easy that
- 1:02:32Drew Peterson was going to pay for the
- 1:02:34murder of Kathleen. But what about
- 1:02:37Stacy? She'd been missing 5 years by
- 1:02:40this
- 1:02:41time. Was anyone ever going to be
- 1:02:43charged in her
- 1:02:45case? Cassandra must know by now that
- 1:02:48that she's dead. But in our society,
- 1:02:51it's important to have a place to be
- 1:02:53able to mourn. And not only do they not
- 1:02:56know how Stacy died, they don't even
- 1:02:58have a place to lay a wreath or a
- 1:03:02flower. Drew Peterson's original trial
- 1:03:04attorney says this has gone on long
- 1:03:06enough. He says it is time for the truth
- 1:03:08to come out. And yes, lawyers and
- 1:03:11clients have a sacred bond, but so do
- 1:03:14humans to each other.
- 1:03:17I feel very bad for Cassandra. I want
- 1:03:20her to have closure.
- 1:03:23I don't want to
- 1:03:24um you know go too far across the line.
- 1:03:28I want to go as far as I think I can and
- 1:03:31should try to So, you know, people need
- 1:03:34to read between the lines to get the
- 1:03:36closure they need. Let them read between
- 1:03:38the lines. I I'm I'm doing as much as I
- 1:03:42feel I can.
- 1:03:44The big mysteries in Stacy's case have
- 1:03:47always been no body, no weapon. And now
- 1:03:51Broadsky seems to be giving us real
- 1:03:53clues about both of these mysteries.
- 1:03:59They did an interview of Drew and
- 1:04:01Cathy's children. Hey there phony,
- 1:04:03please. How you doing? And during that
- 1:04:05interview, one of Drew's children, Chris
- 1:04:08Christopher Peterson, talks about Drew
- 1:04:11practicing in the basement of the house
- 1:04:13with a firearm with a silencer. Did you
- 1:04:17ever hear a gun go off in your house?
- 1:04:23Uh, other than the time that me and my
- 1:04:26dad were practicing shooting downstairs,
- 1:04:28the basement. You were practicing
- 1:04:30shooting in the basement. No, he had me
- 1:04:32stand in my brother's room while he
- 1:04:34shot. What was he shooting at? Uh, this
- 1:04:37one like bullet thing that we wanted to
- 1:04:41test out this new silencer you got. The
- 1:04:44new silencer? Yeah. He just made it
- 1:04:46himself.
- 1:04:53[Music]
- 1:04:56If I'm investigating what I believe to
- 1:04:58be a
- 1:04:59homicide and then somebody who lived in
- 1:05:03that house talks about the person I
- 1:05:04think committed this homicide, firing a
- 1:05:07silenced pistol in the basement, target
- 1:05:10shooting.
- 1:05:13So what are you telling us about the
- 1:05:15relevance of the gun? Well, I mean, you
- 1:05:18can from that evidence, I think you can
- 1:05:20infer uh how if Drew killed Stacy, how
- 1:05:23he would have done it because their kids
- 1:05:26were
- 1:05:27home. And if he was going to do
- 1:05:29anything, a silenced weapon like that
- 1:05:32would be probably the best way to do
- 1:05:41it. Also, Tom Morphe was there when
- 1:05:45Stacy disappeared.
- 1:05:47[Music]
- 1:05:49He helped Drew carry a container out of
- 1:05:52Drew's house that he believed had
- 1:05:55Stacy's body in
- 1:05:56it. Morphe later on went to the
- 1:06:00authorities and told them what had
- 1:06:03happened. You know, he gave an interview
- 1:06:05that was
- 1:06:06um pretty compelling evidence
- 1:06:09really. And if the police would have
- 1:06:12done a thorough search of the house,
- 1:06:15they might have found um a couple of
- 1:06:19blue
- 1:06:21containers. You know, it's it's all um
- 1:06:25circumstantial, very
- 1:06:27circumstantial. Uh I don't know that
- 1:06:29there was enough, you know, but you
- 1:06:31start piling these things up, enough
- 1:06:33circumstantial evidence is enough to get
- 1:06:35a conviction.
- 1:06:44Following Drew Peterson's conviction,
- 1:06:46the usual back and forth ensues. Appeal
- 1:06:49after appeal. But you know, this is Drew
- 1:06:51Peterson. He does not give up. And he
- 1:06:54doesn't know when to stop. And there is
- 1:06:56still one major shoe to drop in this
- 1:07:00wild
- 1:07:05tale. A story and a name. You likely
- 1:07:08remember a former Illinois police
- 1:07:10officer convicted of killing his third
- 1:07:12wife expected to appear in court today.
- 1:07:14A judge agreed to hear Drew Peterson's
- 1:07:17motion to vacate his conviction. Drew
- 1:07:20tried to make the case that he had
- 1:07:21ineffective counsel. And that
- 1:07:23ineffective counsel was Joel Bradsky.
- 1:07:26It's almost like clockwork, the Hail
- 1:07:28Mary. Someone who's not winning enough
- 1:07:30appeals goes after the lawyer. Always
- 1:07:33ineffective assistance of counsel. And
- 1:07:35that's exactly what Drew did. and
- 1:07:37Brodzky was having none of it.
- 1:07:40I'm more afraid of my onepound dog than
- 1:07:42I am of Drew Peterson. He's he's a
- 1:07:44blowhard. You know, for all his his
- 1:07:46swagger, you only hurt defenseless
- 1:07:48women. Drew Peterson hadn't factored in
- 1:07:51that his one-time attorney might one day
- 1:07:53leave the profession of law. And in June
- 1:07:56of
- 1:07:572019, something happened that changed
- 1:08:00everything. The Illinois Supreme Court
- 1:08:03suspended Joel Broaddsky's license to
- 1:08:05practice law. Two years. It was about a
- 1:08:08bunch of unprofessional conduct charges
- 1:08:11that had nothing to do with Drew. I'm
- 1:08:14doing consulting now. I'm doing private
- 1:08:16investigations now. I'm doing okay. I
- 1:08:19really don't want to go back to that. I
- 1:08:21don't want to go back to that sewer as I
- 1:08:23called it.
- 1:08:26So, with this new freedom in 2022, Joel
- 1:08:30Broaddsky makes a surprise announcement.
- 1:08:33I had gotten a call from a reporter and
- 1:08:35then uh at the end of the interview, I
- 1:08:37mentioned to him, I said, you know, I've
- 1:08:39been thinking for a while that maybe
- 1:08:40it's time I end the mystery about what
- 1:08:43happened with with Stacy. Maybe, you
- 1:08:46know, revealing what happened to Stacy
- 1:08:49and and and where she is.
- 1:08:52Lawyers keep secrets. That's their job.
- 1:08:55And when they don't, that's news and
- 1:08:57that's my job. So when Drew Peterson's
- 1:09:00lawyer told NewsNation yesterday that he
- 1:09:02just might commit the biggest lawyer sin
- 1:09:04there is, ratting out his client, we sat
- 1:09:08up and took notice. Conversations
- 1:09:09process. There's no criminal law that
- 1:09:12says that you can't talk about
- 1:09:16it. I think I have a lot more leeway
- 1:09:19than I would if I was practicing law on
- 1:09:22one hand. On the other hand, I still
- 1:09:25want to be careful because I know a lot
- 1:09:28of secrets. I don't want people to think
- 1:09:29that, oh my god, now Bratzky's going to
- 1:09:31say everything he knows about everybody
- 1:09:33he's ever
- 1:09:35represented. Drew is never getting out
- 1:09:38of prison. His case has been looked at
- 1:09:41by 12 different judges, all who
- 1:09:44unanimously affirm the
- 1:09:49conviction. Drew is going to die in
- 1:09:50prison. I think he knows he's not
- 1:09:52getting out. It It's time for him to do
- 1:09:55the right thing. I think I could have a
- 1:09:58decent shot of uh getting him to do the
- 1:10:02right thing. I'd really like to try
- 1:10:05that. This is one thing about Drew. Just
- 1:10:08to do the right thing, that's not true.
- 1:10:11I think if it would benefit his
- 1:10:13children, I think he would do it.
- 1:10:16But if he
- 1:10:18won't, somebody's got to.
- 1:10:21After Broadsky's interview airs on WGN,
- 1:10:24the judge slaps him with a gag order,
- 1:10:27and that's at the request of Drew
- 1:10:29Peterson's new attorneys. But even that
- 1:10:31isn't permanent. So, we're going to find
- 1:10:33out at some point whether Brodsky is all
- 1:10:36bluster or if he really does know
- 1:10:38something that can help put Stacy's
- 1:10:41family at rest and give them closure.
- 1:10:45I have a first amendment right. The law
- 1:10:47is clear. I no longer consider myself
- 1:10:49bound by this uh gag order. So, uh I
- 1:10:52told Cassandra as much as I could. I
- 1:10:56think that she knows that her sister is
- 1:10:59um not
- 1:11:01missing. Am I willing to go to jail? I
- 1:11:04prefer not
- 1:11:05to. You know, we should put an end to
- 1:11:08this.
- 1:11:09It could be months or even years before
- 1:11:12the rest of the story is told. But in
- 1:11:14the meantime, Cassandra is more
- 1:11:16determined than ever to bring her sister
- 1:11:21home. If you think you know where my
- 1:11:23sister is, then let me know. Stop
- 1:11:27holding me
- 1:11:28back. He just thinks he
- 1:11:33knows. But I'm already way ahead of
- 1:11:36Joel. I already have it all. Anyways, I
- 1:11:39believe I found my sister.
- 1:11:43[Music]
- 1:11:47I don't know if Drew Peterson will ever
- 1:11:51be prosecuted for Stacy Peterson's
- 1:11:53murder without a body.
- 1:11:57You can prosecute people when there's no
- 1:12:00body. It's not like you can't. No body
- 1:12:02cases and and convictions
- 1:12:05occur fairly routinely, but what happens
- 1:12:10if Drew was charged with Stacy's
- 1:12:12disappearance? And the jurors are like,
- 1:12:14"Yeah, he probably did it, but we didn't
- 1:12:16feel like there was proof beyond a
- 1:12:17reasonable doubt, so we can't vote
- 1:12:19guilty." And they acquit him. And then
- 1:12:20she's found. You can never retry him.
- 1:12:26I don't think there's any doubt in
- 1:12:28anybody's mind
- 1:12:30that Stacy is deceased and is out there
- 1:12:36somewhere. Cassandra has put a credible
- 1:12:41effort into trying to locate her and
- 1:12:45search on her
- 1:12:50own. You don't understand the connection
- 1:12:52we had. I felt this whoosh go through my
- 1:12:56body. I knew Stacy was murdered. It was
- 1:12:59her telling me. That's when my mission
- 1:13:01started to go for Stacy.
- 1:13:03[Music]
- 1:13:05Going all the way back to the time when
- 1:13:07Stacy went missing, Cassandra was really
- 1:13:10instrumental in organizing all the
- 1:13:12ground searches for her sister. But then
- 1:13:14she shifted her focus to the place 14
- 1:13:18minutes away from Stacy and Drew's home.
- 1:13:21the place where police suspect Drew
- 1:13:22might have actually dumped Stacy's body,
- 1:13:25the Illinois and Michigan canal.
- 1:13:29It's a big canal. I mean, it's a very I
- 1:13:32don't know if you ever saw it. It's big.
- 1:13:35I don't want her spending any more money
- 1:13:37that she can't
- 1:13:38afford. You know, I'd like to be able to
- 1:13:40do this for her if at all possible. And
- 1:13:43I hope it becomes possible.
- 1:13:49I don't know how often I've gone up to
- 1:13:50the
- 1:13:53canal. In this past
- 1:13:56year, I have been on the canal searching
- 1:14:00approximately six times with sonar and
- 1:14:03divers. I believe I found my
- 1:14:06sister. I know it's my
- 1:14:10sister. after all these years. There's
- 1:14:13some amazing people out there that would
- 1:14:14show up if I needed it. That's
- 1:14:20very heartful and amazing to
- 1:14:25me. The best one I've had was a half
- 1:14:28million dollar
- 1:14:30ROV brought in. Only one in the world.
- 1:14:35It had all the bells and whistles and
- 1:14:37the sonar and high viz
- 1:14:39cameras, lights, all of that. But just
- 1:14:45being on the canal is just
- 1:14:48even more
- 1:14:50difficult. It's not easy to fight for my
- 1:14:54sister and keep her name alive.
- 1:15:00The mystery keeps a lot of people going
- 1:15:03because they want to find her. They're
- 1:15:05behind Cassandra. Like, we want you to
- 1:15:07find your
- 1:15:09sister and I hope that she is found
- 1:15:12someday. So, that mystery and Stacy's
- 1:15:15disappearance keeps the story alive if
- 1:15:17nothing else.
- 1:15:19where my sister's remains are in the
- 1:15:22canal. It's not
- 1:15:25accessible, but me and my team are
- 1:15:28recovering her. So, not only will I get
- 1:15:30my sister, I'll get the last
- 1:15:33left. Blackport is 35 miles
- 1:15:38southwest of
- 1:15:40Chicago. It's the INM
- 1:15:43canal that runs through there.
- 1:15:46literally sucks the life out of
- 1:15:49me because I know she's
- 1:15:52[Music]
- 1:16:01there. So, this is the bottom of the
- 1:16:03canal. We were
- 1:16:05searching with sonar and we got the live
- 1:16:10video. And if you look underneath the
- 1:16:14grabber
- 1:16:15claw, you can see a human skull upside
- 1:16:19down. The two eye sockets right
- 1:16:21underneath it filled with silt and the
- 1:16:23lower jawbone fell
- 1:16:26off. You can totally see a
- 1:16:29female
- 1:16:32bound hair
- 1:16:34waving full body form.
- 1:16:42It's
- 1:16:44somebody. Whether it's my sister or not,
- 1:16:46they need to be brought
- 1:16:49home. Is she at the exact place of
- 1:16:56this? What's that black thing? Is that
- 1:16:58from the camera or
- 1:17:06something? Wow.
- 1:17:09That's like right there underneath the
- 1:17:10whatever that black thing is
- 1:17:15right. It's a skull. Is it hers though?
- 1:17:23[Music]
- 1:17:25in looking at this uh
- 1:17:29video that potentially could be a pelvis
- 1:17:33with a little bit of spine spinal column
- 1:17:37femur bone almost look
- 1:17:43broken jagged edges there
- 1:17:46skull I'm actually shocked that they
- 1:17:48were able to get the photos they did of
- 1:17:50this because of the movement of the
- 1:17:52stuff down there but yeah here too See
- 1:17:55more
- 1:17:56bone. It's a pretty clear picture. It's
- 1:18:00a lot different than the technology back
- 1:18:02in uh
- 1:18:032007. This was not available back
- 1:18:06then. I would say somebody should go and
- 1:18:09take a look at
- 1:18:14this. I want everybody to remember my
- 1:18:17sister as the most amazing woman,
- 1:18:21mother, friend.
- 1:18:26God,
- 1:18:29wife,
- 1:18:31aunt, cousin, she's just daughter.
- 1:18:36Amazing. I want people to remember body
- 1:18:40form, not skeletal remains on the bottom
- 1:18:43of the canal.
- 1:18:48The Illinois State Police say that this
- 1:18:49case is far from over and that they may
- 1:18:52actually return to search for Stacy's
- 1:18:55remains. But retrieving her body would
- 1:18:58bring so much closure to her family and
- 1:19:01might even push Drew or someone
- 1:19:04else to confess to the murder. But in
- 1:19:08the meantime, friends and family of both
- 1:19:10Stacy and Kathleen are working to honor
- 1:19:13their memories with an organization that
- 1:19:15helps women who were in the same
- 1:19:17position that Stacy and Kathleen were
- 1:19:19in.
- 1:19:21Going through this with Stacy and and
- 1:19:24not knowing what to do has definitely
- 1:19:26created so many moments for me to help
- 1:19:29other victims all over the country.
- 1:19:34document the abuse came about because of
- 1:19:37what happened with Kathleen and with
- 1:19:40Stacy.
- 1:19:42So what it does, a victim sits down and
- 1:19:44they they basically they tell their
- 1:19:46story so that if something happens to
- 1:19:49the victim, their story is heard in
- 1:19:52their voice if they're incapacitated or
- 1:19:54murdered. if something happens, I can
- 1:19:57now come to court with everything in a
- 1:20:00comprehensive,
- 1:20:01cohesive manner and be able to work on
- 1:20:05their
- 1:20:08behalf. Projects like these allow for
- 1:20:11the names of Kathleen and Stacy to to
- 1:20:14live on, but they also help prevent
- 1:20:18further suffering for other families who
- 1:20:20may be in the same boat. And the
- 1:20:22families of Kathleen and Stacy have both
- 1:20:24said they don't want anyone to ever go
- 1:20:26through what they've gone through
- 1:20:28because there can always be another Drew

- 1:20:35Peterson. On the surface, Drew Peterson
- 1:20:39seemed like a very nice guy and he was
- 1:20:42to his children a good dad on one hand.
- 1:20:45On the other hand, in reality, he's a
- 1:20:48monster.
- 1:20:49He is probably one of the most evil
- 1:20:52people I've ever met.
