- 0:44welcome to the second annual National
- 0:46driving test now I can just walk away
- 0:49from this wreck but out on the highway I
- 0:52might not be so lucky and most likely
- 0:54neither would you we'll put you right
- 0:56behind the wheel with a 25 question test
- 0:59of your driving skill
- 1:00we'll find out if you're a highway hero
- 1:03or a terror on Wheels now all you need
- 1:05to take the test is a piece of paper and
- 1:07pencil and you're driving smarts as we
- 1:09put you in some situations we hope you
- 1:12never have to
- 1:15[Music]
- 1:16face driving might be easy if it was
- 1:19just you out there on the road but in
- 1:21reality it is a jungle out there traffic
- 1:25is a maze of cars trucks motorcycles
- 1:27bicycles pedestrians all competing for
- 1:30their share of the road the Undisputed
- 1:33King of the Road is the big truck
- 1:35weighing in at £80,000 lb the average
- 1:38tractor trailer is more than a match for
- 1:40your 2,000lb car but there's no need to
- 1:43fear trucks if you know how to share the
- 1:45road with them here's question number
- 1:47one of the test worth Four
- 1:50Points you're on an8 Lane freeway with
- 1:52moderate traffic at 55 mph you're
- 1:56passing a large tractor trailer and pull
- 1:58over as soon as you clear the front of
- 1:59it
- 2:00suddenly the pickup truck in front of
- 2:02you Slams on his brakes you stop in time
- 2:05to avoid hitting the pickup but the
- 2:07tractor trailer crashes into you from
- 2:09the
- 2:13rear how could you have avoided this
- 2:15Collision a left more distance between
- 2:19your car and the pickup B left more
- 2:22distance between your car in the tractor
- 2:24trailer C tapped your brake several
- 2:28times to alert the tractor trailer
- 2:30driver D all of the
- 2:34above for Four Points the answer is B
- 2:38left more distance between your car and
- 2:40the tractor trailer the biggest
- 2:42complaint of truckers is that cars cut
- 2:45them off pulling too close in front of
- 2:47them because trucks are bigger and
- 2:50heavier it takes them much longer to
- 2:51stop than it does
- 2:53cars you should leave more space between
- 2:56yourself and a large vehicle than you
- 2:58would for another car A good rule of
- 3:00thumb when passing is to wait until you
- 3:02can see both headlights and the tires in
- 3:05your rear view mirror before pulling in
- 3:07front now we've talked about some of the
- 3:09larger Vehicles like the big trucks but
- 3:12you should also be concerned about
- 3:13motorcycles because of their size
- 3:15they're small size for Four Points
- 3:18here's question number two you are
- 3:20driving down a four-lane highway a
- 3:22motorcycle is directly in front of you
- 3:25driving in the right side of the lane he
- 3:27is far enough over that you can pass him
- 3:29without Crossing into another Lane true
- 3:31or false it is safe to pass in this
- 3:36situation false it is never safe to pass
- 3:40a motorcycle in your same Lane in fact
- 3:43in Most states it is illegal a
- 3:45motorcycle is a vehicle too and is
- 3:47entitled to a whole Lane don't be fooled
- 3:50if the motorcycle is over to one side he
- 3:53may need to maneuver within the lane to
- 3:55avoid unsafe conditions or an
- 3:58obstacle you know who are the most
- 4:00dangerous people you're likely to meet
- 4:01in your lifetime just look in the
- 4:06mirror they're drivers just like you
- 4:09you're more likely to be killed in a
- 4:10traffic accident than any other way
- 4:13question number three is a fill-in the
- 4:14blank we're going to take a ride write
- 4:17down every traffic violation you can see
- 4:20here we go
- 4:31he
- 4:34[Music]
- 5:14for half a point each here are the eight
- 5:16violations you could have spotted number
- 5:18one the brake lights are not working on
- 5:21this car number two rolling through a
- 5:24stop sign instead of coming to a
- 5:26complete stop three making a lane change
- 5:29with without
- 5:31signaling four failing to yield RightWay
- 5:34to a
- 5:35pedestrian five slowing to a crawl or
- 5:39stopping on a highway onramp where there
- 5:41is other traffic six pulling into
- 5:45traffic without
- 5:47signaling seven traveling below the
- 5:49speed limit in the fast
- 5:51lane and finally eight cutting off
- 5:55another
- 5:56vehicle any one of these might trigger a
- 5:59driving disaster disaster be alert and
- 6:01remember you get half a point for each
- 6:03violation for a possible total of four
- 6:06points another creature to look out for
- 6:08in that jungle on the road is the
- 6:10bicycle Rider he doesn't have a
- 6:12protective hide like cars and trucks his
- 6:14only bumper may be a pair of jeans
- 6:16question number four you're approaching
- 6:19an intersection where you want to make a
- 6:20right turn a bicycle Rider is up ahead
- 6:23of you to the right you turn in front of
- 6:25the bike and it smashes into you what
- 6:28could you have done to prevent this
- 6:30accident a stayed farther to the left
- 6:33while making your turn B pulled ahead of
- 6:36the bike more quickly C slowed down and
- 6:39pulled in behind the bike D sounded your
- 6:42horn to alert the
- 6:46bicyclist for Four Points the answer is
- 6:49C slowed down and pulled in behind the
- 6:52bike you should treat the bicycle like
- 6:54any other vehicle if this was another
- 6:56car you'd pull in behind it speeding up
- 6:59to pull ahead of the bicycle is a setup
- 7:01for disaster you'll have to slow down in
- 7:04front of him to make your turn and the
- 7:06cyclist will have little time to react
- 7:09one out of every six people who die in
- 7:11traffic accidents aren't driving any
- 7:13kind of vehicle at all they're
- 7:14pedestrians and it's up to you to look
- 7:16out for them question number
- 7:19five you stop for a red light and you
- 7:22find that your car is blocking the
- 7:24pedestrian crosswalk true or false you
- 7:27should back up out of the crosswalk
- 7:30[Music]
- 7:32false you should stay where you are
- 7:35pedestrians who now have the green light
- 7:37may have walked behind your car to cross
- 7:39the street of course it's a mistake to
- 7:41stop in the crosswalk in the first place
- 7:44you can avoid this by not entering the
- 7:45crosswalk unless you have time to make
- 7:47it all the way through the
- 7:49intersection give yourself four points
- 7:51if you answered false if you got
- 7:53everything right so far you could have
- 7:5520 points it doesn't take a PhD or an
- 7:58MBA to keep you from being DOA Dead on
- 8:01Arrival after a serious accident
- 8:03surviving on the road just takes a good
- 8:05driving IQ Let's test yours question
- 8:08number six for Four Points you're on a
- 8:12residential Street approaching an
- 8:13intersection there's a stop sign on the
- 8:16cross street but no stop sign for you a
- 8:19car coming from the cross street runs
- 8:21the stop sign and you slam into him how
- 8:24could you have avoided this Collision a
- 8:27break harder B steered left C steered
- 8:32right d Brak and steered
- 8:38right for Four Points the correct answer
- 8:41is D Brak and steered right most
- 8:44people's tendency is to rely only on
- 8:46their brakes if they fear a collision is
- 8:48imminent often it's more effective to
- 8:50use your steering wheel along with the
- 8:52brakes cars moving at 30 mph or faster
- 8:56can be maneuvered with a steering wheel
- 8:57and less distance than it takes to stop
- 8:59stop in this situation steering to the
- 9:02right may get you out of the path of the
- 9:04other
- 9:06car I'm William Shack every week on
- 9:10Rescue 911 we show you how emergency
- 9:12teams save lives but would you know what
- 9:15to do if you were the first to arrive at
- 9:17the scene of an accident make sure you
- 9:19pull your car all the way off the road
- 9:21to avoid causing another accident then
- 9:24help anyone who was not breathing as
- 9:26well as anyone who was severely bleeding
- 9:28make the as comfortable as possible and
- 9:31provide the necessary first aid but
- 9:33unless you know exactly what you're
- 9:34doing don't move them ask the first
- 9:37person who comes along to call 911 or a
- 9:40doctor and have someone else divert
- 9:42traffic and remember while 911 made the
- 9:45an exciting TV program don't make
- 9:48yourself the star drive
- 9:51carefully now for your etiquette lesson
- 9:53of the day question seven has four parts
- 9:56all involving
- 9:57turn you are on a four Lane Boulevard in
- 10:00the right hand lane a truck in front of
- 10:02you swings to the left true or false you
- 10:05are safe to pull forward and turn
- 10:09right for one point the answer is false
- 10:13you should be aware that trucks make
- 10:14very wide turns if you pull forward you
- 10:17may be caught in the path of the Turning
- 10:19Truck Part Two you're turning in a turn
- 10:22only Lane in moderate traffic you do not
- 10:25need to Signal because it is obvious
- 10:28which way you'll be turning true or
- 10:32false false you must signal every time
- 10:35you change the position or direction of
- 10:38your car one point for false part three
- 10:41you are approaching an intersection on a
- 10:43large Boulevard and pass a bus that has
- 10:45stopped on the right you want to make a
- 10:48right turn it is safe to pull in front
- 10:50of the bus to make your turn true or
- 10:55false false for one point you can't see
- 10:58around the bus there may be people
- 11:01starting to cross the street plus you
- 11:03don't know when the bus may start moving
- 11:05again and finally for one point you're
- 11:08in a left turn lane at a busy
- 11:10intersection two cars in front of you
- 11:12make left turns but the light turns red
- 11:15just as you enter the crosswalk true or
- 11:17false you should stay where you are and
- 11:20not complete your
- 11:21[Music]
- 11:23turn true you should stay right where
- 11:26you are of course it's best to avoid
- 11:28this situ ation by never entering the
- 11:30crosswalk on a yellow
- 11:32light sometimes it's not a question of
- 11:35your rights or your right away it's how
- 11:37quickly you can react hi I'm Perry King
- 11:40I like to spend my spare time on a
- 11:42racetrack but whether I'm driving my
- 11:43race car or my old Ferrari or a pickup
- 11:46truck that I've got I've learned that my
- 11:49safety can often depend on split-second
- 11:51decisions as in question number eight
- 11:54you're driving on a highway at 55 mph
- 11:57when suddenly you see a mattress in the
- 11:59lane ahead of you there are other cars
- 12:01directly to your right and left
- 12:03preventing you from changing lanes what
- 12:05is the best thing to do a press your
- 12:09brake pedal as hard as you can and hold
- 12:11it B steer around the mattress and
- 12:14signal to alert other
- 12:16drivers C brake can go over the mattress
- 12:19as slowly as possible D accelerate
- 12:23without breaking to get over the
- 12:24mattress as quickly as possible
- 12:27[Music]
- 12:29give yourself four points if you
- 12:30answered C break and go over the
- 12:33mattress as slowly as you can your best
- 12:35bet is to use a pumping motion on the
- 12:37brake this will keep the wheels from
- 12:39locking whatever technique you use take
- 12:41your foot off the brake as you go over
- 12:43the mattress this will give you better
- 12:45control of your steering if you answer
- 12:47correctly give yourself another four
- 12:50points hi I'm alen junor take a look at
- 12:54question number nine you are on a
- 12:56freeway getting ready to make a lane
- 12:58change two lanes away another driver
- 13:01decides to change lanes at the same time
- 13:04into the same Lane as you start to move
- 13:07over you barely Miss slamming into the
- 13:10other car true or false a check of your
- 13:14rear view and side mirrors could have
- 13:16prevented this dangerous
- 13:20situation the answer is false looking
- 13:23into the rear view and side mirrors is a
- 13:25must but so is a simple glance over your
- 13:28shoulder
- 13:29the mirrors only show you what's behind
- 13:32you or in the next Lane but they also
- 13:34have blind spots the mirrors don't show
- 13:38you what's happening one lane over if
- 13:40you add a quick head check you'll get
- 13:43the whole
- 13:44picture you see them all the Timeout on
- 13:47the road the signs and signals that are
- 13:49supposed to make driving easier but if
- 13:51you don't know what they mean that's a
- 13:53sign you may be headed for trouble in
- 13:55question 10 we'll show you eight signs
- 13:58signals and Mark for half a point each
- 14:00let's see if you know what each one
- 14:02means
- 14:11[Music]
- 14:24[Music]
- 14:35okay time for the answers first the
- 14:37yellow light we've all seen it it means
- 14:40prepare to stop not speed up to beat the
- 14:43red
- 14:44light number two this sign means Lane
- 14:48added such as where the onramp joins the
- 14:51main Lanes of a highway as you enter the
- 14:54freeway you do not have to merge into
- 14:56another Lane three even though it's says
- 14:59Exit Only many people don't realize it
- 15:02means you must exit your lane will end
- 15:05number four divided highway this means
- 15:08traffic is going to be separated by a
- 15:10median and you should stay to the right
- 15:13number five pavement ends this means the
- 15:17PVE Road will soon end and the road will
- 15:19become dirt or gravel slow down six Hill
- 15:23or steep downgrade ahead all drivers
- 15:27especially those with large vehicles
- 15:29should reduce speed and use extra
- 15:32caution number seven Flagger ahead this
- 15:36sign means you are approaching a work
- 15:37Zone follow the directions of the
- 15:40flagger even if the way looks clear to
- 15:43you and finally the yellow solid line
- 15:46next to a broken line means passing is
- 15:48allowed in One Direction but not in the
- 15:51other if you are on the side of the
- 15:53solid line you may not pass give
- 15:55yourself a half point for each one you
- 15:57got right now let's see how you're doing
- 15:59on the test if you answered everything
- 16:01correctly so far you could have a total
- 16:03of 40
- 16:04points they call them crash dummies and
- 16:07for good reason who else would get in a
- 16:09car with absolutely no protection
- 16:11unfortunately the answer is more than
- 16:14half the people in this country which
- 16:16brings us to question number 11 for Four
- 16:19Points a young man is picking up a
- 16:21friend to take a out for a ride in his
- 16:23new car he is very proud of all the new
- 16:26features on the car including an airbag
- 16:28on the driver side as with most new cars
- 16:31the passenger side doesn't have an
- 16:32airbag so the friend buckles her safety
- 16:35belt true or false for Four Points the
- 16:38driver does not need to buckle his
- 16:40safety belt because there is an airbag
- 16:42on his
- 16:44side false even though he has an airbag
- 16:48the driver should still Buckle a safety
- 16:50belt airbags are meant to be used along
- 16:53with safety belts not to replace them
- 16:56the bag is only designed to inflate in a
- 16:58crash in involving the front of your car
- 17:00not in a rear end side or rollover crash
- 17:04allowing the bag to deflate
- 17:08quickly last week I went out with a girl
- 17:10and she told me to buckle up I said but
- 17:12we're in the living room actually we
- 17:15should all buckle up every time we get
- 17:16into a car the fact is in a collision at
- 17:18just 15 mph without a safety belt you
- 17:22could hit the windshield as hard as 150
- 17:24lb of cement dropped from a second story
- 17:26window you know what kind of damage that
- 17:28could do do to your
- 17:31[Applause]
- 17:32[Music]
- 17:37face it could kill
- 17:40you and it's brutal on your TV
- 17:44reception safety belts are obviously
- 17:46important but could there be a valid
- 17:48reason for not wearing one we'll see in
- 17:51question
- 17:5212 a woman who is almost 9 months
- 17:54pregnant gets in the car to go to the
- 17:56market
- 18:00she tries to buckle her safety belt but
- 18:03feels uncomfortable pressure true or
- 18:05false this is the one exception to the
- 18:08safety belt rule women more than 7
- 18:10months pregnant should not wear safety
- 18:12belts because of possible danger to the
- 18:15[Music]
- 18:17fetus for Four Points the answer is
- 18:20false even on the trip to the hospital
- 18:23to deliver a pregnant woman should
- 18:24always wear a safety belt the best way
- 18:27to protect the fetus is to protect the
- 18:29mother Obstetricians recommend that the
- 18:31lap and shoulder belts should both be
- 18:33used with the lap belt as low as
- 18:35possible on the hips under the baby
- 18:38being prepared is the key to keeping
- 18:40your car out of the body shop because in
- 18:42certain situations knowing what your car
- 18:44will or will not do can make all the
- 18:47difference question number 13 worth Four
- 18:50Points you're driving on a busy highway
- 18:53when your engine dies you should
- 18:55immediately turn off your engine to
- 18:57prevent overheating or a possible
- 18:59electrical fire true or
- 19:01[Music]
- 19:03false false you should never turn off
- 19:06your ignition on a street or Highway
- 19:08when your engine fails this may cause
- 19:10your steering to lock when your car
- 19:12stalls what you should do is shift into
- 19:14neutral and guide your car off the
- 19:18road can we talk not you the car don't
- 19:22laugh it's not like your kids you should
- 19:24pay attention when your car is whining
- 19:25at you one point each identify the these
- 19:28four sounds and the problems they may
- 19:30indicate here's sound number
- 19:34one sound number
- 19:38two sound number
- 19:42three and sound number
- 19:45four okay let's go back to sound number
- 19:48one one ping means you've dropped your
- 19:51lipstick excessive pinging or knocking
- 19:54may be caused by low octane gas what it
- 19:57means is you need to switch to high
- 19:58octane now for the clunk let me tell you
- 20:01I met my share of clunks during my
- 20:03lifetime but this clunk sound means
- 20:05something is loose and it's about to
- 20:06break in your steering mechanism sound
- 20:09number three a high pitch squeal first
- 20:11of all make sure you don't have a little
- 20:12cheerleader in your trunk and if you
- 20:14still have that squeal after youve
- 20:15taking her out means a Drive Bel is
- 20:18loose and finally number four metallic
- 20:21grinding that means you break pair the
- 20:24shop so get your car to the shop right
- 20:27away besides making horrible sounds your
- 20:30car may try to communicate with you
- 20:32using sign language for some of the
- 20:34signs you can see here's question
- 20:3715 you're driving on the highway when
- 20:40the oil light comes on what should you
- 20:42do a pull out of traffic and turn off
- 20:45the engine B drive to the nearest gas
- 20:48station C keep driving but remember to
- 20:52add oil the next time you get gas D stop
- 20:55immediately and abandon your car
- 21:00for Four Points the answer is a as soon
- 21:03as it's safe pull out of traffic and
- 21:05turn off the engine when the oil light
- 21:08comes on this means that your oil
- 21:10pressure is dangerously low any more
- 21:12driving could destroy the engine
- 21:15checking our scoreboard you could have a
- 21:16total of 60 points so far if you were a
- 21:18real whiz and got every question
- 21:24right hi I'm Ted Shackleford skids can
- 21:27happen on any surface but they're more
- 21:29likely to happen whenever there's
- 21:30anything on the road it could be loose
- 21:32gravel or dirt like this or much more
- 21:35typically the treacherous conditions
- 21:36that are created whenever the weather
- 21:38turns back question number 16 sounds
- 21:40simple but it's crucial to your safety
- 21:43what's the most common cause of a skit a
- 21:47over accelerating B over breing C sudden
- 21:50turning of steering wheel d none of the
- 21:56above for Four Points the answer is be
- 21:58over braking when you break too hard
- 22:00your wheels can lock up causing your
- 22:02tires to lose traction with the road
- 22:04this is the most common cause of skids
- 22:06part of avoiding a skid involves knowing
- 22:08which areas of the road are likely to be
- 22:10the most slippery question number 17 is
- 22:12a fill-in the blank you're traveling on
- 22:15a very cold day look at this picture and
- 22:17pick out the three areas of the road
- 22:19that are most likely to be
- 22:24icy the answers are the bridge the
- 22:28bottom of the the hill and the Shaded
- 22:31area the bridge is more likely to be icy
- 22:34because cold air is circulating under it
- 22:36as well as over it water can accumulate
- 22:38at the bottom of the hill and freeze and
- 22:40it's always colder in the shade if you
- 22:43got one area right give yourself one
- 22:45point two areas right two points and if
- 22:48you found all three give yourself Four
- 22:50Points water on the road becomes an
- 22:53especially tricky problem when the water

- 26:34can help you compensate for the effects
- 26:36of Mother Nature question 22 is worth
- 26:39another four
- 26:40points you're driving down a residential
- 26:43street where everything seems perfectly

- 27:27to 15 seconds ahead when driving most
- 27:30drivers only look 4 seconds ahead this
- 27:33is all they see but if you were looking
- 27:3512 to 15 seconds ahead you would have
- 27:38seen the ball in the street in plenty of
- 27:39time to slow down cover your Brak and
- 27:42even honk your horn to warn the child
- 27:45you know the old say where there's a
- 27:47ball there's a boy about half of all
- 27:50fatal traffic accidents involve people
- 27:52who were drinking now we all know it's
- 27:54illegal and dangerous to drink and drive
- 27:56but if you're drinking how how do you
- 27:58know how much is too much here are some
- 28:01questions to test your knowledge about
- 28:03alcohol and driving question 23 is worth
- 28:06Four Points what is the legal limit for
- 28:08blood alcohol content while driving in
- 28:11your
- 28:14state the answer varies from state to
- 28:16state so look at this map for your
- 28:18answer in Most states the limit
- 28:21is10 that means one drop of alcohol for
- 28:24every 1,000 drops of blood in these four
- 28:27states California Maine Oregon and Utah
- 28:31the limit is lower
- 28:348 our next question goes beyond the law
- 28:38let's say you have been drinking but
- 28:39your blood alcohol content is below the
- 28:41legal limit true or false you are safe
- 28:44to
- 28:47drive false for Four Points even if your
- 28:50blood alcohol level is below the legal
- 28:52limit Studies have shown that your
- 28:54driving is still impaired but even at 0
- 28:58well below the limit in all states you
- 29:01are still twice as likely to be involved
- 29:03in a collision now let's say you're not
- 29:05the one drinking you're hosting a small
- 29:07party at your home you're serving wine
- 29:10and beer and your guests seem to drink
- 29:12only moderately none of them appears
- 29:15intoxicated after your guests leave you
- 29:17get a phone call one of them has been
- 29:20involved in a serious crash and has been
- 29:22taken to the hospital true or false you
- 29:26could be held legally responsible for
- 29:28the crash even though you were not in
- 29:30the
- 29:32car true a growing number of states have
- 29:35legal Provisions for holding the host
- 29:37responsible if he serves alcohol to
- 29:39someone who then goes out and causes an
- 29:41accident besides that the people
- 29:44involved in the Collision could sue you
- 29:46but whether it's a law on your state or
- 29:48not it's a good practice to be a
- 29:50responsible host if you answered true
- 29:53give yourself Four
- 29:56Points I'm Connie Celica one of the
- 29:59spokespersons for Mad Mothers Against
- 30:01Drunk Driving what makes me mad is
- 30:03watching anyone drink and drive no
- 30:05matter how moderately they drink it's
- 30:08estimated that two out of every five
- 30:10Americans will be in an alcohol rated
- 30:12crash sometime during their lives as a
- 30:14host it's your responsibility to make
- 30:16sure your guest ride home is not their
- 30:18last before the partying starts is the
- 30:21time to ask each group of guests who the
- 30:23designated driver will be in fact it's a
- 30:26good idea to make yourself or someone
- 30:27else as a key master so you can decide
- 30:30who's in control enough to drive home at
- 30:31the end of the evening make sure the
- 30:33life of the party stays that way
- 30:36alive if you score between 80 and 100
- 30:40congratulations you're probably a safe
- 30:42driver and you have a good chance of
- 30:44beating the odds when it comes to being
- 30:45in a traffic accident if you score
- 30:47between 60 and 80 you know something
- 30:50about good driving but there are skills
- 30:52you could learn to be safer on the road
- 30:55if your score was below 60 your living
- 30:58dangerously you should probably take a
- 31:00safe driving course at a nearby driving
- 31:02school but there are simple things we
- 31:04can all do to make our road safer be
- 31:07alert look ahead leave enough space
- 31:10between your car and others and think
- 31:12about what to do in an emergency before
- 31:14it happens remember when it comes to
- 31:17safety you're in the driver's seat we'd
- 31:19like to thank the following
- 31:20organizations for their help in
- 31:22designing this test
