- 0:40you're driving on a two-lane road
- 0:42suddenly an oncoming car pulls out to
- 0:44pass you're dangerously close to a
- 0:46head-on
- 0:51collision hi I'm Christopher reev and
- 0:53welcome to the National driving test
- 0:55would you know what to do in that
- 0:56situation unfortunately many people
- 0:58don't sending their cars to graveyards
- 1:00like this and themselves to another kind
- 1:02altogether well let's start the program
- 1:04with a question what part of the car
- 1:06causes the most
- 1:08accidents the answer of course is the
- 1:10driver 85% of all traffic accidents are
- 1:13caused by mistakes made by drivers and
- 1:15since about 164 million of you drive
- 1:18we're going to help you learn some
- 1:19things that could save your life or
- 1:21someone else's it's a test of your
- 1:23driving knowledge 25 questions totaling
- 1:26100 points this test has been developed
- 1:28in association with the national Safety
- 1:30Council the national highway traffic
- 1:32safety administration and the Automobile
- 1:34Association of America as well as other
- 1:36safe driving
- 1:37organizations look at it as a wakeup
- 1:39call designed to help you wake up to the
- 1:41fact that there's something you can do
- 1:42to be a better driver and help reduce
- 1:45the Staggering number of traffic
- 1:46accidents in this country over 2 million
- 1:48disabling injuries and close to 50,000
- 1:51deaths a year part one of the test is
- 1:53called a good
- 1:54defense well it's time for the first
- 1:56question on the test it's worth Four
- 1:58Points
- 2:00you're driving on a two-lane road
- 2:02passing is allowed in either direction
- 2:04an oncoming car pulls out to pass and
- 2:06he's coming head on in your lane what
- 2:09should you do a turn quickly into the
- 2:12left lane B slow down and move to the
- 2:14right C stay in your lane and maintain
- 2:17your speed D stop immediately in your
- 2:21lane once again the oncoming car is
- 2:23heading right for you what should you
- 2:27do the correct answer is B
- 2:30slow down and move to the right slowing
- 2:33down will help you maintain control and
- 2:34moving to the right gets you out of the
- 2:36way do these at the same time and be
- 2:38prepared to keep moving to the right
- 2:40even if you have to drive off the road
- 2:41completely to avoid a
- 2:44collision okay next question number
- 2:47two you're driving a car approaching a
- 2:50blind intersection with no stop signs or
- 2:52signals suddenly a car appears from the
- 2:55frost you strike it broadside
- 3:00how could you have avoided this a turn
- 3:03sharply to the left B sounded your horn
- 3:07as you approached the intersection C
- 3:09break and then kept your foot over the
- 3:11brake pedal as you approached the
- 3:12intersection or D there was nothing you
- 3:15could have done about
- 3:18it the correct answer is C break and
- 3:21then kept your foot over the brake pedal
- 3:23as you approach the intersection if
- 3:25you're coming up to an uncontrolled
- 3:26intersection that is one with no stop
- 3:28signs traffic signal or police
- 3:30controlling traffic you need to be
- 3:32especially careful slow down by braking
- 3:34slightly and then keep your foot just
- 3:37above the brake this covering your brake
- 3:39allows you to react much faster for
- 3:41example if you're traveling at 30 mph
- 3:44you can stop 20 to 25 fet earlier than
- 3:46if you still had your foot on the gas
- 3:48and that movement could mean the
- 3:50difference between life and death so if
- 3:52you answered correctly answer C you give
- 3:54yourself another four points
- 4:01here's something to think about out of
- 4:03every hundred people 86 of us stand a
- 4:05chance of being in an accident that
- 4:06causes injury sometime during a driving
- 4:08careers with that in mind here's our
- 4:10next question number three worth Four
- 4:13Points you're driving down a two-lane
- 4:15road the car in front of you stops
- 4:17suddenly and you slam into its rear end
- 4:19how could you have avoided this
- 4:21Collision he look further down the road
- 4:24B left more distance between your car
- 4:26and the car in front of you C stepped on
- 4:29your bra brake harder D watch the brake
- 4:32lights of the car
- 4:34ahead once again the car in front of you
- 4:37stops suddenly how could you have
- 4:38avoided slamming into
- 4:42it the correct answer is B left more
- 4:45distance between your car and the car in
- 4:47front of you you should always be
- 4:49looking 12 to 15 seconds ahead about the
- 4:51equivalent of a city
- 4:53block well give yourself another four
- 4:55points if you answered B and here's a
- 4:57good rule of Thum to make sure you're
- 4:58following at a safe distance
- 5:00use What's called the 2C rule watch the
- 5:03vehicle in front of you pass a fixed
- 5:05object with Point like this telephone
- 5:06call then count to yourself 1,001 1,002
- 5:10if your car reaches that same fixed
- 5:12point before you finish counting you're
- 5:14too close now let's move on to question
- 5:17four we've all been here before it's
- 5:19night the guy coming toward you is
- 5:21blinding you with his high beams we've
- 5:23already tried to Signal by using your
- 5:24headlights the other guy doesn't respond
- 5:27what you should do now is turn on your
- 5:29highbeam to counteract the glare to help
- 5:31you see the roadway is that true or
- 5:35false well the answer is false you
- 5:37should not turn on your high beams while
- 5:38you encounter another car in fact in
- 5:41Most states it's actually illegal to
- 5:42have your high beams on within 500 ft of
- 5:45an oncoming vehicle while it's common
- 5:47practice to briefly flash your lights to
- 5:49warn another driver it's very dangerous
- 5:51to leave your high beams on because it
- 5:52can blind the driver at the oncoming
- 5:54vehicle actually doubling the danger so
- 5:57if you answered false you add another
- 5:59four points to your score okay now it's
- 6:01time for the last question number five
- 6:03in the good defense portion of the
- 6:04driving test it's another true or false
- 6:06question and it's worth Four
- 6:08Points you're driving on a multi-lane
- 6:10highway and the car that is overtaking
- 6:12you appears to be out of control weaving
- 6:15from side to side the best course of
- 6:17action is to stay in your lane and
- 6:18maintain your speed true or
- 6:22false the answer is false the correct
- 6:25response is if safe get into another
- 6:27lane or even pull off the road would
- 6:29stop you want to get as far away as you
- 6:31can get from a weaving
- 6:33driver okay well you got all five
- 6:35questions right in a good defense
- 6:36section you're cruising along with 20
- 6:39points coming up next rules of the
- 6:43road let's take a drive it's a nice day
- 6:47maybe you're dropping off your children
- 6:48or taking a quick trip to the market
- 6:50going to work nothing particularly out
- 6:53of the ordinary just a normal drive down
- 6:55the street in any Town
- 6:57USA well now it's time to test your
- 6:59memory question number six you've just
- 7:02been on the driver's seat on a typical
- 7:03Drive what was the last road sign you
- 7:06saw give up well let's take the same
- 7:09drive again and see what we
- 7:26missed the last road sign was the symbol
- 7:28for school crossing if you missed that
- 7:30question you weren't alone 80% of all
- 7:33the drivers could not tell us the road
- 7:35sign question number seven worth a half
- 7:37a point each identify and Define these
- 7:39eight signs or signals watch carefully
- 7:41now here we
- 7:44go sign number
- 7:48one here's sign number
- 7:53two sign number
- 7:57three now sign number four
- 8:03sign number
- 8:06five here's sign
- 8:11six sign number
- 8:16seven and the final sign number eight
- 8:19got them all let's go back and see how
- 8:21we did remember you had to do more than
- 8:23just name the sign you had to know what
- 8:24it means
- 8:25too sign number one Slippery When Wet
- 8:28that's sone planor sign number two red
- 8:31light green arrow this means that all
- 8:33traffic going in the direction of the
- 8:35arrow May proceed all other traffic has
- 8:37to stop sign number three no u-turn we
- 8:40called them uis when I was growing up no
- 8:42u-turn means no 180° turns sign Number
- 8:45Four Road Narrows this means that the
- 8:47road might become significantly narrower
- 8:49ahead sign number five merge this means
- 8:52you have to blend in with the existing
- 8:54traffic sign number six flashing red
- 8:56light probably the most missed symbol of
- 8:59all means come to a complete stop then
- 9:01when safe proceed think of it as a stop
- 9:04sign sign number seven wrong way means
- 9:07wrong way don't enter traffic will be
- 9:09coming against you sign number eight
- 9:11workers ahead this is very important it
- 9:14indicates construction workers will soon
- 9:16be in or alongside the upcoming stretch
- 9:19Road okay time for question number eight
- 9:21on the driving test the lane on my left
- 9:23is marked on each side by a solid and
- 9:25broken yellow line what's this Lane for
- 9:28a passing other cars B left turns C
- 9:32driving around to avoid congestion D
- 9:35momentary
- 9:38stopping the correct answer is
- 9:41b a lane marked on each side by a solid
- 9:44and broken yellow line is used for
- 9:46beginning or ending left turns don't use
- 9:48it for anything other than preparing to
- 9:50make or complete the turn in some states
- 9:52u-turns are allowed from this link check
- 9:54with your state to be sure the crested
- 9:56is worth Four
- 9:58Points hi I'm Sarah Gilbert from Rosanne
- 10:01for those of you who' watched the show
- 10:03you know how hard my parents work so
- 10:05they don't have a lot of time to drive
- 10:06me to school which is why I spend a lot
- 10:08of time on the school bus they always
- 10:10tell me to be careful getting on or off
- 10:13well we want you to be careful too
- 10:16that's what this next question number
- 10:18nine is all about you're on Street
- 10:21approaching a school bus with its red
- 10:23lights flashing what do you do a come to
- 10:26a complete stop then continue carefully
- 10:28B come come to a stop and wait to move
- 10:30until the lights are no longer flashing
- 10:32and the bus is moving C slow down and
- 10:35pass the bus carefully or D come to a
- 10:38complete stop only if you see kids
- 10:41around the correct answer is
- 10:44B flashing red lights on a school bus
- 10:47means time to stop and wait to move
- 10:49until the lights are no longer flashing
- 10:51and the bus is actually moving there may
- 10:54be kids you can't see getting on or off
- 10:56the bus remember in Most states you
- 10:58don't have to stop if you're driving on
- 11:00the opposite side of a divided roadway
- 11:03but no matter where you are be
- 11:06careful if you got that one right answer
- 11:09B you give yourself another four points
- 11:11now question number 10 has four parts
- 11:13and they're worth one point each these
- 11:15questions concern right of way or who
- 11:17should yield in certain situations the
- 11:20law never actually gives anyone the
- 11:21right of way but it does indicate who
- 11:23should yield or give way when Vehicles
- 11:25encounter one another here's the first
- 11:27situation
- 11:30there's a four-way stop intersection and
- 11:31cars A and B arrive at the same time who
- 11:34should
- 11:36yield the answer car a should yield the
- 11:39car B whoever arrives at the
- 11:41intersection first has the right of way
- 11:43but when cars arrive at the same time
- 11:45the car on the left should yield to the
- 11:47car on the
- 11:48right in the next situation two cars are
- 11:50facing each other both turning onto the
- 11:52same street who should yield the right
- 11:54of
- 11:55away the answer is car a should yield a
- 11:58car making a left turn should yield to
- 12:00all oncoming
- 12:04traffic example C A Car approaches an
- 12:06unregulated intersection where
- 12:08pedestrian starts to cross there's no
- 12:10marked crosswalk who should
- 12:12yield the car should yield to The
- 12:15Pedestrian at any intersection even if
- 12:17there is no marked crosswalk and the
- 12:19last example a car is about to make a
- 12:22rightand turn from a driveway as car B
- 12:24approaches in that same Lane who should
- 12:27yield the answer is car a should yield
- 12:31cars entering a roadway should always
- 12:32yield to those already on the road we've
- 12:35had 10 questions worth 40 points next
- 12:38we'll have questions on the driving
- 12:39environment sometimes there's just
- 12:42nothing you can do about what's on the
- 12:45road you're driving along the street
- 12:48everything's fine and you turn a corner
- 12:50and back you're blinded by the glare of
- 12:52the sun here's question 11 name three
- 12:55things you should do as a driver to
- 12:57minimize sunare
- 13:03the three things you should do as a
- 13:04driver to reduce Su glare are number one
- 13:06make sure your windshield is clean
- 13:08inside and out number two adjust the sun
- 13:11visor just make sure you don't block
- 13:12your view of the road when you do it
- 13:14number three wear sunglasses polarizing
- 13:17gray lenses block glare most effectively
- 13:19let's try that drive again and you'll
- 13:21see what you should have seen the first
- 13:25time if you got all three answers give
- 13:27yourself Four Points only me two correct
- 13:29answers two points one answer one point
- 13:33now from the Sun to the Rain question
- 13:34number 12 when do you think the road is
- 13:37slickest during a
- 13:39rainfall a anytime it's raining B the
- 13:42first minutes of rain C 30 minutes after
- 13:45the rain stops or D toward the end of
- 13:48the
- 13:50storm give yourself four points for the
- 13:52correct answer B the road is slickest
- 13:55during the first minutes of rain then
- 13:57oil on the road which is lighter than
- 13:59water floats up to the surface of the
- 14:01pavement this creates a thin film of oil
- 14:04and a very slick driving surface
- 14:06depending on the strength of the
- 14:07rainfall most of the oil is eventually
- 14:09washed away you know the saying that oil
- 14:11and water don't mix well they do create
- 14:13a perfect environment for a skid let's
- 14:15say your car does go into a skid here to
- 14:17tell us what to do is someone who knows
- 14:19how to handle a car even in the worst
- 14:20situation his training and skills have
- 14:22actually saved his
- 14:24life side by side going into turn three
- 14:27Elbo down low in the middle of track and
- 14:29may have it they almost touch tou wheels
- 14:32and then the wall is Al junr Elmo
- 14:35continues on they touch wheels and turn
- 14:37three ammo continues on you can see the
- 14:39damage to the number two Al uner
- 14:42Jr most of you will never find yourself
- 14:45in that situation but you may find
- 14:48yourself in a skid whether you're doing
- 14:50200 mph at Indianapolis or 2 on your
- 14:53neighborhood street there's nothing
- 14:55worse than your car suddenly shooting
- 14:57off in a direction you had no intention
- 14:59of going let's see if you know what to
- 15:02do question number 13 of the national
- 15:05driving test is a multiple choice
- 15:08question if your car goes into a skid
- 15:11you should a take your foot off the
- 15:14accelerator B keep your foot off the
- 15:17brake C steer the vehicle in the
- 15:21direction of the skid D all of the above
- 15:29the correct answer is D all of the
- 15:34above let me demonstrate the instant you
- 15:37lose control take your foot off of the
- 15:40accelerator turn in the direction of the
- 15:42skid keep your foot off the brake so
- 15:45that they won't lock up once you regain
- 15:48control accelerate gently to bring the
- 15:51car back into a completely normal
- 15:54situation sometimes you think you're
- 15:56doing absolutely nothing wrong on the
- 15:57road but you could be breaking the law
- 15:59for instance question 14 under what
- 16:02conditions can you get a ticket for
- 16:03actually driving the posted speed
- 16:08limit a during bad weather conditions B
- 16:11in heavy traffic C in a residential Zone
- 16:14where children are playing in the street
- 16:16or D all of the
- 16:18above the answer is D all of the above
- 16:21because of what's known as the basic
- 16:23speed law all of the conditions listed
- 16:25above plus many others are regulated by
- 16:27this law says it if conditions make it
- 16:29unsafe to drive the posted speed limit
- 16:31you can't drive it use common sense and
- 16:34give yourself four points if you got the
- 16:36correct answer D time now for the last
- 16:39question in the driving environment
- 16:40portion of the test number 15 it's a
- 16:42true or false question when driving in
- 16:44fog you should always use your high
- 16:46beams is that true or
- 16:49false add four points if you answered
- 16:52false you should always use your low
- 16:54beams in five most people missed this
- 16:57question you'd naturally think that the
- 16:58more light you have the better you can
- 16:59see but the moisture in the fog reflects
- 17:02the light right back to
- 17:03you well we're over halfway through the
- 17:06test and at this point if you've
- 17:07answered everything correctly you should
- 17:08have a total of 60 points for the first
- 17:1015 questions coming up next we're going
- 17:12to look at some of the unexpected things
- 17:14that might happen when you're out on the
- 17:15road and what you can do about
- 17:18it the next three questions will test
- 17:20your skills in some tense
- 17:22situations hi I'm Lorenzo llamas as a
- 17:25professional race driver I know it's
- 17:27often the everyday Drive that gets you
- 17:29into some real nail biting
- 17:32situations this section is designed to
- 17:34help show you what to expect when you
- 17:36face the
- 17:37unexpected this is question number 16
- 17:40it's worth Four
- 17:41Points you're driving on a downhill
- 17:43slope approaching a stop sign when you
- 17:46step on the brakes they
- 17:48fail what's the first thing you should
- 17:50do a shift your car into a lower gear B
- 17:55apply the emergency brake C pump your
- 17:59brake pedal and try to build pressure D
- 18:03if possible steer off the road to the
- 18:05right to a clear area what is the first
- 18:08thing you should
- 18:10do the correct answer is
- 18:14C if your brakes fail pump your brake
- 18:17pedal to try to build up pressure that
- 18:20is the first course of action you should
- 18:21try because there still may be enough
- 18:24pressure if that doesn't work then shift
- 18:26into a lower gear so the engine will
- 18:28help you stop the parking brake is for
- 18:31the final part of the stop so apply it
- 18:33slowly so the brakes won't lock now
- 18:35here's question number 17 you're driving
- 18:3845 mph on a roadway and suddenly your
- 18:41right Wheels drop off the edge of the
- 18:42pavement what should you do a slow
- 18:46gradually before turning back onto the
- 18:47pavement B turn back onto the pavement
- 18:50at once C drive onto the shoulder and
- 18:54stop D steer straight ahead and speed up
- 18:57to gain maximum control control of your
- 19:00vehicle the correct answer is
- 19:03a slow gradually before turning back
- 19:06onto the pavement keep a firm grip on
- 19:08the steering wheel when it's safe and
- 19:10your speed is under control turn the
- 19:12wheel quickly about a quar turn to the
- 19:14left give yourself four points if you
- 19:16answer
- 19:17correctly question number 18 is the last
- 19:20question in the taals of the unexpected
- 19:22and it's a real white meth while driving
- 19:25down the street you take your foot off
- 19:26the accelerator to break and find your
- 19:28your accelerator is stuck after tapping
- 19:31the gas pedal and trying to free it now
- 19:33pay attention here's a Twist which of
- 19:35the following should you never do a turn
- 19:38off your ignition B immediately put your
- 19:42car in neutral and break C reach down
- 19:45and try to pull the gas pedal up with
- 19:47your hand d none of the
- 19:51above the correct answer is C never try
- 19:54to pull the gas pedal up with your
- 19:57hand this this is a very dangerous
- 20:00action because no matter how quickly you
- 20:01think it can be done your vision of the
- 20:04roadway is blocked if tapping the
- 20:07accelerator with your foot doesn't work
- 20:09shift your car into neutral and apply
- 20:10the brakes drive off the road if
- 20:12possible or as far to the right side as
- 20:14you can take care if you turn off your
- 20:17ignition that you don't turn the key so
- 20:19far that it locks the steering wheel
- 20:21give yourself another four points if you
- 20:22chose the correct answer
- 20:24C well after 18 questions the total
- 20:27number of points you could have scored
- 20:28or should have scored
- 20:31is
- 20:5172 with self-service gas stations
- 20:54popping up in almost every street corner
- 20:56we're forced to do a lot of the routine
- 20:57maintenance on our cars ourselves that's
- 21:00why the next section of the driving test
- 21:01goes under the
- 21:04hood hi I'm Susan ran Val LA and I have
- 21:08a confession to make I'm a bit of a
- 21:10grease monkey I like to work on cars and
- 21:13here's question number 19 it has to do
- 21:15with car fluids for one point each name
- 21:19four fluids that should be checked
- 21:20regularly and replaced when necessary by
- 21:23the way there are seven so you've got
- 21:25extra chances to pick four
- 21:31here are the seven fluids that should be
- 21:33checked and replaced when necessary one
- 21:37oil two automatic transmission fluid
- 21:41three brake fluid four radiator coolant
- 21:45and or water five battery water six
- 21:51windshield washer fluid seven steering
- 21:55fluid now remember to give yourself a
- 21:57point each up to four points you can
- 21:59name four out of the seven fluids now
- 22:02for extra credit see if you can identify
- 22:04what these fluids are now some
- 22:06manufacturers may vary but these are the
- 22:08most common now here's some red stuff if
- 22:11you see that on the ground or on your
- 22:13shirt check your automatic transmission
- 22:15fluid a green stuff well that's cool it
- 22:18a brown that's oil dirty oil this is
- 22:22clean oil over here now this sort of
- 22:24reddish brown Gunk that's steering fluid
- 22:27and this
- 22:29that's last night's spaghetti
- 22:33dinner hi I'm Perry King when I'm not
- 22:35acting you can often find me on a
- 22:37racetrack but today I'm on a closed
- 22:39portion of the LA freeway to demonstrate
- 22:41the next question in the Valene National
- 22:43driving test and here's question number
- 22:4520 having underinflated tires on a dry
- 22:48Road gives you a better control of
- 22:50steering and braking B more traction C
- 22:55less control of steering and braking or
- 22:57D better gas mileage now what do you
- 23:01think the correct answer is C having
- 23:04underinflated tires gives you less
- 23:06control of your steering and braking
- 23:08next is one of the most important
- 23:09life-saving sections of the test but
- 23:11first a fact there's 34 states and the
- 23:14District of Columbia that have mandatory
- 23:16safety belt laws which means before you
- 23:18even put the key in the ignition you
- 23:19have to buckle up question 21 is all
- 23:22about safety belts there's four parts
- 23:24worth a point
- 23:26each here's the first wearing safety
- 23:29belts give you a greater chance of
- 23:30escaping a burning or submerged vehicle
- 23:33true or false for one point the answer
- 23:36is true a safety belt will increase your
- 23:39chances of being conscious and in
- 23:41position to either get out of the car or
- 23:42control it if you don't think safety
- 23:45bels are important watch
- 23:50this
- 23:55wa oh man
- 23:58a hypo
- 24:01okay yeah if the driver of this car
- 24:05hadn't worn a safety belt it would have
- 24:06been impossible for him to have escaped
- 24:08injury or to have removed himself from
- 24:09the burning
- 24:11car continuing with part two of question
- 24:1421 safety belts reduce injuries only in
- 24:17collisions above 15 mph is that true or
- 24:20false for one point the answer is false
- 24:24a driver's head can strike the
- 24:25windshield the steering wheel or the
- 24:27dashboard at a speed as low as 5 mph and
- 24:30now for part three of question 21 safety
- 24:33belts are more effective on the highway
- 24:34than for local Street Drive is that true
- 24:36or
- 24:37false at one point the answer is false
- 24:4080% of accidents occur at speeds of 40
- 24:42mph or less here's the next generation
- 24:45of drivers and to make sure he gets his
- 24:48turn pay attention to part four of
- 24:50question 21 here's Meredith backer
- 24:52Bernie okay our next question concerns
- 24:54safety belts and children this is
- 24:57Alexander he's going to help us
- 24:59the safest place for your baby is in an
- 25:01infant seat in the back seat facing
- 25:04backwards is that true or false the
- 25:07answer true give yourself one point most
- 25:10people think that the baby should be
- 25:12facing forward so we can see what's
- 25:13going on well that's not the case place
- 25:16your baby's safety seat in the back seat
- 25:19facing backwards and make sure it's
- 25:20properly anchored to the seat with a
- 25:22safety belt that's for infants larger
- 25:25babies or toddlers weighing up to 40 lb
- 25:27can be buckled into four forward facing
- 25:28toddler seats like this one this seat
- 25:31must be secured with a safety belt too
- 25:33when a child reaches the point when his
- 25:34head clears the back seat then you can
- 25:36use the regular safety belts just make
- 25:38sure that the shoulder strap doesn't cut
- 25:40into his neck and make sure that your
- 25:42child and you know how to use safety
- 25:44belts properly the lat belt should be
- 25:46tied across the hips never across the
- 25:48stomach and the shoulder strap should be
- 25:50comfortable but snug never so loose it
- 25:53would just fall off your shoulder and
- 25:55remember for many of the new cars that
- 25:57have automatic safety belt
- 25:58you still have to buckle the lap belt to
- 26:01be fully protected here's another true
- 26:03false question for you worth four points
- 26:05question number 22 I've got all the
- 26:07mirrors on the car adjusted properly
- 26:09this means I've eliminated all the blind
- 26:10spots is that true or
- 26:13false well the answer is false because
- 26:16even with the mirrors properly adjusted
- 26:17there still are blind spots take a look
- 26:20the rear view mirror allows you to see
- 26:22directly behind you the side mirrors
- 26:24help you see immediately to either side
- 26:26of the car but for a limited distance
- 26:27only
- 26:29take a look at what I see in the side
- 26:30view mirror nothing
- 26:32right now take a look at what was in the
- 26:34blind
- 26:36spot seriously the shaded areas on this
- 26:39diagram show you what you can't see in
- 26:41your car here's an important tip for you
- 26:43when passing or overtaking another car
- 26:46if you can't see that car's rear view
- 26:48mirror that means they can't see you
- 26:50either and you're in their blind spot to
- 26:52make sure you haven't missed a vehicle
- 26:54behind you turn your head for a last
- 26:56second check before changing Lane
- 26:59the total points the date if you gotten
- 27:00everything right is
- 27:0688 of the nearly 50,000 people who die
- 27:09each year in traffic accidents over half
- 27:11die because of alcohol rated incidents
- 27:14to see how much we know about the
- 27:16effects of alcohol we've asked for a
- 27:17Little Help from one of the top
- 27:18celebrity drivers in the country and
- 27:20also a great athlete here's question
- 27:22number 23 it's a two-part question each
- 27:24part worth two points and they're both
- 27:26going to be true false the average mixed
- 27:28drink has a stronger effect on you than
- 27:31a glass of wine or a mug of
- 27:35beer the answer is
- 27:38false 1.5 Oz glass of whiskey a 5 oz
- 27:42glass of wine or 12 O of beer all have
- 27:44the same effect on you they all contain
- 27:47the same amount of alcohol so if you
- 27:49answered false give yourself two points
- 27:52part two of question number 23 drinking
- 27:54black coffee getting some strenuous
- 27:56exercise or taking a cold sh power
- 27:58reduces the effects of alcohol true or
- 28:01false the answer false the only way to
- 28:04reduce the effects of alcohol is to stop
- 28:06drinking and wait two points for a false
- 28:09answer the next question 24 also deals
- 28:11with your own physical capacity true or
- 28:13false over-the-counter medication can
- 28:15affect your driving
- 28:17ability the answer is true many
- 28:20over-the-counter medications can affect
- 28:21your driving ability in reaction time
- 28:23that means cold medicines allergy pills
- 28:26cough medicines and lots more and
- 28:28combining them with alcohol can multiply
- 28:30the effects so learn to pay close
- 28:32attention to labels this is what you
- 28:35should look for this particular box says
- 28:37do not drive or operate Machinery while
- 28:39taking this medicine as it may cause
- 28:42drowsiness a correct answer true on that
- 28:44question gives you another four points
- 28:46and now it's time for the last question
- 28:48in the test question 25 another four
- 28:50points as we get older which ability is
- 28:53usually the first to
- 28:55deteriorate a reaction time B sense of
- 28:58direction C hearing or D night
- 29:04vision the answer is D night vision it's
- 29:07the ability that deteriorates first and
- 29:09fastest with a noticeable difference
- 29:11after about age 40 now let's try this
- 29:14we're going to show you a scene at night
- 29:15for a short period of time tell me how
- 29:18many signs this type of sign you can
- 29:23see how many did you see the answer is
- 29:26four look again here's the scene and
- 29:28here are the signs if you didn't see
- 29:30four signs well that's a sign you
- 29:32shouldn't be driving at night okay let's
- 29:35see how you scored if you got all the
- 29:37questions right 100% congratulations
- 29:39look great on paper but remember that
- 29:41last year alone one in every five
- 29:43drivers had some kind of a wreck watch
- 29:46out for them if you scored 90 to 99
- 29:49points you're better than average but it
- 29:51takes better than average skills to
- 29:53survive on today's highways if you
- 29:55scored 82 to 89 that might get you a b
- 29:57in school but it ranks only average in
- 29:59this test and the average driver makes 2
- 30:02and 1 Half Mistakes for each Miley
- 30:04drives 76 to 81 you're a little below
- 30:08average anything below 76 you have a
- 30:11below average score you should really
- 30:12think about your driving you might want
- 30:14to take a defensive driving course this
- 30:17test by no means has a definitive say on
- 30:19what kind of a driver you are but it is
- 30:20a good guide to what you need to know we
- 30:23hope we've shown you some things you can
- 30:24do to make yourself a better driver and
- 30:26some things to watch out for with the
- 30:28other
- 30:30guy we'd like to thank the following for
- 30:32their cooperation and designing this
- 30:33test
