Full transcript
- 0:00Hi.
- 0:00>> Hi doctor. How are you doing?
- 0:01>> I'm doing well.
- 0:02>> Uh can I know your name please?
- 0:03>> I'm [music] Dr. Thomas Nich. I'm from
- 0:06Porcoin from Kerala. [music]
- 0:08>> Okay. And how many years of practice
- 0:10experience do you have?
- 0:11>> I'm 25 years in my practice. [music]
- 0:13I've been uh I passed out in 2000.
- 0:16>> Okay. Great. So Dr. King, you joined the
- 0:19program after so many years of practice
- 0:20experience. [music]
- 0:21Uh what was this one challenge that you
- 0:23face in your practice that made you join
- 0:25this uh course?
- 0:27uh see I I am a second [music]
- 0:29generation practitioner. So I inherited
- 0:32the whole clinic from my dad. So uh
- 0:35there were challenges wherein we have
- 0:37[music] a transition wherein we had uh
- 0:39people who were working with us for
- 0:41quite some time. Then then [music]
- 0:43slowly they moved out and then younger
- 0:45generation came. There is lot of uh
- 0:47problems with HR basically uh like uh
- 0:50[music] uh human resource uh which had
- 0:52to be trained and then but we used to do
- 0:54it with because [music] we we knew how
- 0:56it is done because I was there from the
- 0:58inception of the clinic like uh clinic
- 1:01is 60 years he took my clinic is 60
- 1:04years but uh daddy when I was born I was
- 1:07born into the clinic like
- 1:09so [music]
- 1:10so we knew how it has to be trained how
- 1:13how it can be done but it was all just
- 1:15like uh street smartness or whatever you
- 1:18call it is not quantified at all.
- 1:21>> So this [music] course helped us to look
- 1:23into this as a management wherein you
- 1:26[music] understand and then you quantify
- 1:28stuff even finances or even uh daily
- 1:32things like marketing and how to market.
- 1:34[music] So although we do it but uh how
- 1:38to look into whether [music] we are
- 1:40doing it right that's a big question
- 1:42that was a challenge like
- 1:43>> correct. So are we doing it right?
- 1:45[music] Some areas we were not doing
- 1:47right. So we could understand what was
- 1:48going wrong and then we could correct it
- 1:50slowly and still it takes a long time.
- 1:53So uh I listen to the lectures. See the
- 1:56good thing about [music] this lectures
- 1:58is that although it was done only once
- 2:00like but the lectures are available so
- 2:03we listen to it uh while I'm driving
- 2:06while I'm listening. So we have [music]
- 2:07kept it on this thing. for the mobile
- 2:09hazard. So we do it regularly so that we
- 2:12see every time you listen to it
- 2:13something [music] we try so we go and
- 2:15adjust it. So
- 2:16>> that was uh something which was really a
- 2:18[music] blessing. I even printed out all
- 2:20the slides and kept it.
- 2:22>> Wow. Okay. That's great doctor. So um
- 2:24why is it now that you actually enrolled
- 2:26in the program after so many years? Uh
- 2:29wherein did [music] you feel that why is
- 2:31this the right time for you to join?
- 2:33Uh-huh. The [music] point is not that
- 2:36why I uh joined this program. There was
- 2:40no program at all. There was no
- 2:42management program for design for the
- 2:44dentist. So this is I think that's the
- 2:46or if it was there I didn't come to know
- 2:49about it. So I knew most of these things
- 2:51but [music] it was not professional at
- 2:53all. It was all basics on the it was
- 2:55just a one day course by [music] some
- 2:57sponsored people. See but this is more
- 3:00structured. It had all the modules to it
- 3:02and uh and we had a wonderful team which
- 3:05was actually along with us because they
- 3:07were all putting [music] their side to
- 3:08it
- 3:08>> right
- 3:09>> because see I've not seen people with
- 3:12multiple practice open [music] up and
- 3:14say that uh uh this is how they manage
- 3:17>> correct
- 3:18>> whereas I used to have only single
- 3:20[music] practice and then uh I struggle
- 3:23I cannot even think about starting
- 3:24another practice so they say how [music]
- 3:27they'll tell their inputs of how they
- 3:29manage two practice or three practice
- 3:31So that's was I opened and they said but
- 3:33basically why I didn't join is because I
- 3:35didn't either there was no program
- 3:38[music] at all or the programs which I
- 3:40saw was not at all to the par [music] or
- 3:43I didn't if there was something then I
- 3:45didn't know about it.
- 3:46>> Sure sh
- 3:47>> for three reasons.
- 3:48>> So uh in this 3 months what [music] was
- 3:50this one aha moment for you in the
- 3:52program that you remembered or you have
- 3:55actually was very memorable for you? See
- 3:58uh see [music]
- 3:59we were uh getting into AI uh like
- 4:02artificial intelligence and things like
- 4:04that in multiple phases like from
- 4:06pocketing [music] to so many things. All
- 4:08right. Uh so it was like uh we it is all
- 4:12we and it was all the inputs were given
- 4:14by AI companies [music] and they used to
- 4:17drag us to different things. Uh so the
- 4:21AI thing [music] the AI classes were
- 4:23like oh even we could do it and [music]
- 4:26we can actually do something about it
- 4:29and so that was one thing and the
- 4:31[music] marketing side which I always
- 4:33wanted uh and that uh [music] marketing
- 4:36side was like all structured this is how
- 4:39this is how this is how uh and the way
- 4:43Suam had put it uh it it [music] really
- 4:46struck the moment you know like
- 4:48>> correct correct And I wanted you stop
- 4:50and then we take it home.
- 4:51>> Okay. [music]
- 4:53>> Basically uh see uh you can ask the same
- 4:55question.
- 4:56>> Yeah. Yeah. So [music] um doctor what
- 4:58was this one aha moment in the program
- 5:00for you that actually was very memorable
- 5:03to you or that something that you
- 5:04remembered a lot. [music] See uh we were
- 5:07all trying with all these AI stuff and
- 5:10things like that but what is it
- 5:12inspecific to dental clinics [music]
- 5:14that was very difficult and most of
- 5:16these were driven by companies which
- 5:17will come and market to you we'll start
- 5:19something with AI something do [music]
- 5:21and it used to be
- 5:24it was not a area where we knew at all
- 5:27so we didn't know much about it so the
- 5:28[music] AI classes were really good
- 5:30because I could go and do some of these
- 5:32things and I felt oh I also have a name
- 5:35AI And so sec [music] one thing is that
- 5:37second thing is uh we tried a lot of
- 5:40stuff in marketing and but it was all uh
- 5:44inherent [music]
- 5:45uh one of our street smartness as as I
- 5:47told earlier. So uh but how to market it
- 5:51to reach the right audience and how to
- 5:54[music] make it structured even to
- 5:56replicate it. See I was I am the
- 5:58dentist. See it's like uh doing all the
- 6:02things by [music] yourself.
- 6:05See if you [music]
- 6:07actually uh was lacking wherein I
- 6:10couldn't actually tell [music] why you
- 6:12do this that was not there. So always
- 6:14quantifying things and understanding
- 6:17what is behind the science behind
- 6:19[music] it. We could actually fine-tune
- 6:22all these things. So that is something
- 6:24absolutely wonderful. So I was telling
- 6:26[music] all my friends also why you are
- 6:28going to hydraat. So I was telling see
- 6:31see although you may not do everything
- 6:33differently but you'll do things
- 6:35differently that matters [music]
- 6:36>> correct
- 6:37>> so that is something absolutely
- 6:39fantastic
- 6:40>> was there any module for you which was
- 6:42an eyeopener or rather you [music]
- 6:45learned a lot from it maybe
- 6:47>> see I don't have one module which did so
- 6:50I [music] almost every module I tried
- 6:52doing some of the modules I I couldn't
- 6:54get it at all [music] but uh most of
- 6:57them I tried to do then I go and and
- 7:00really listen to the [music] whole thing
- 7:01to understand how I can benefit from
- 7:04that module. So [music] I have not
- 7:06stopped it. I I think I it will take
- 7:08another 3 or 4 months for me to actually
- 7:10grab the whole thing out.
- 7:12>> So uh and I'm not trying to do it on a
- 7:14daily basis because I'm not full-time
- 7:16into that. But uh I at least spend two
- 7:18to three hours every [music] weekend uh
- 7:21sitting on it and
- 7:23>> understanding more about it. Then I have
- 7:25put a [music] full file of all the
- 7:26slides there. So that instead of reading
- 7:29some marketing [music]
- 7:30the same but I started reading all these
- 7:33slides and this pre-ereads [music] there
- 7:34are so many things which I have taken I
- 7:36print out.
- 7:37>> Correct.
- 7:37>> So all these things I I cherish to read
- 7:40and understand a little bit. So that's
- 7:41how I've done it. So [music] it's not
- 7:43one module or two modules which have
- 7:46>> right right.
- 7:47>> Most of the modules we have tried.
- 7:48[music]
- 7:49Some of them went really bad then I had
- 7:51to listen the whole lecture and then
- 7:53when did it [music] now I am asking some
- 7:56of my staff also to do some of those
- 7:59>> so that you can understand a little more
- 8:01uh so that when I [music] say to them
- 8:03they should also understand why I tell
- 8:05that no
- 8:06>> correct definitely [music] definitely as
- 8:08a part of human resources you mentioned
- 8:10right so Dr. How about the faculty that
- 8:12that was a part of the program? Do you
- 8:14think they were very well versed or they
- 8:16actually were beneficial to you or
- 8:17rather the eyes be learning as [music]
- 8:19well?
- 8:19>> See uh the faculty was absolutely good
- 8:22in their uh area of expertise. [music]
- 8:25Uh some of the things which I wanted was
- 8:28a little more tailor made for the
- 8:30dentist because they were also caught
- 8:31off guard say like I think this is the
- 8:33second time they are doing it. Correct.
- 8:35So I think uh the faculty needs to
- 8:38understand [music] the dental side a
- 8:40little more. So that it will be much
- 8:41more beneficial to us otherwise they
- 8:43were all good in their [music] sphere of
- 8:46uh understanding and they just saying as
- 8:48we interacted more and more [music] they
- 8:51had the knowledge but uh I think some of
- 8:53the faculties need to little more fine
- 8:55tune [music] on the brush up on the
- 8:57industry how it works so that we can get
- 9:00even more from them but uh but [music]
- 9:03see and done it's in one hour of uh
- 9:06their lecture how much more can we get
- 9:09it [music] so that way when you look at
- 9:11it every faculty uh contribute a lot to
- 9:14our all all this uh [music] journey but
- 9:17uh if you ask me I say so that is one
- 9:21thing I wanted to tell was [music]
- 9:22little more was well wellversed with the
- 9:25uh the whole system of dentistry [music]
- 9:27would have given much more easier see
- 9:30they were also finding it very difficult
- 9:32to explain how it works there
- 9:34>> right [music]
- 9:34>> I think understanding more about the
- 9:36clinical side of practice would have so
- 9:38that was experience.
- 9:40>> [music]
- 9:41>> So as you know doctor that the uh
- 9:43faculty is actually distributed into uh
- 9:46dentists as well as the management
- 9:48faculties from ISB right [music] so I'm
- 9:50assuming this was towards some ISB
- 9:51faculty or who teach management aspect
- 9:53>> they were all very good they were
- 9:54international [music] faculty they were
- 9:56people and they were so humbled so that
- 9:58they could they they tried to made make
- 10:01us understand but
- 10:02>> [music]
- 10:02>> uh but it would have been a little more
- 10:05uh see when you design a program I would
- 10:07have suggested [music] that a little
- 10:09more insights to them would have they
- 10:11would have actually tailor made the
- 10:13whole program for us so that it will be
- 10:15much more easier [music] for us to uh
- 10:17get the correct
- 10:18>> real juice out of it you know right
- 10:20>> so uh so that is one thing which I had
- 10:23to suggest but otherwise [music] the
- 10:24faculties were very open they they
- 10:26started telling you see when we asked
- 10:28silly questions you know they tried to
- 10:30explain they sat down they even [music]
- 10:32extended the hours of uh the lecture and
- 10:35then they tried to tell [music] us how
- 10:37it can be done and things so the faculty
- 10:40were absolutely fantastic but [music]
- 10:42this is one thing I felt as a clerician
- 10:44see we always try when we [music] sit
- 10:46down for 1 hour we want to take out
- 10:48something out of it now we are working
- 10:50on it get more about it because it is
- 10:53available uh [music] after see some of
- 10:56these things what they said
- 10:59it it went over our mind because we were
- 11:01never taught any [music] basics about it
- 11:03so
- 11:04>> correct
- 11:04>> when they say advanced stuff yeah
- 11:06>> right right definitely to understood
- 11:10So here um now that you have been a part
- 11:13of the program for such a long time
- 11:15>> [music]
- 11:15>> um do you think that the uh time and
- 11:18energy that you put in the program was
- 11:20valuable to you? H [music]
- 11:22it was all valuable. See each and see
- 11:26that's what I told each and every
- 11:27lecture contributed to my points but now
- 11:30I am trying to [music] listen and
- 11:33relearn and unlearn some things that we
- 11:35were doing and readapt it so that we can
- 11:39fine-tune to get a little more [music]
- 11:40basically like sharpening the blade to
- 11:42do it much better. So that is something
- 11:44which is and uh see today I have taken a
- 11:48leave from the clinic and come the
- 11:50[music]
- 11:50whole point is the patients are also
- 11:52excited. Oh doctor very good well done.
- 11:54So see that [music] is see I have put
- 11:55there on my board that I am visiting
- 11:58Indian school [music] of business for
- 12:01program and they are like oh wow that's
- 12:04really nice [music] doctor. So see
- 12:07everybody wants you to learn. So this
- 12:09has been a great learning for us.
- 12:10[music] That's something absolutely
- 12:12wonderful. So um the the amount of fees
- 12:14that you paid did you get the value back
- 12:16in terms of [music] knowledge or rather
- 12:18um exposure or even the future prospects
- 12:21[music]
- 12:22or growth as well?
- 12:23>> See the amount of money you paid for a
- 12:26program like this is see if you can
- 12:28implement [music] it
- 12:30>> you'll get back in one or two months
- 12:31that's it
- 12:32>> before the program you have
- 12:33>> before the program.
- 12:34>> Okay. [music]
- 12:35See the whole point is not by listening
- 12:37to it not by uh the saying you listen to
- 12:40it then you turn over it you you
- 12:43actually [music] cut you on it and then
- 12:45you start implementing it do the
- 12:47mistakes implement it into your practice
- 12:49[music] then you get the money back so
- 12:52it's not about learning the whole thing
- 12:53it's all about implementing the whole
- 12:55thing into it we have learned so many
- 12:57things but we have not implemented it so
- 12:59correct management is [music] something
- 13:01which we never been taught so
- 13:03>> this program was not only an eye opener,
- 13:06it's like [music] Pandora's box for us.
- 13:08It's like
- 13:09>> it will do good in the long term you
- 13:11know and uh the money is see if to get a
- 13:15[music] lecture of these such uh high
- 13:18value persons
- 13:20>> money is very [music] low.
- 13:21>> Amazing.
- 13:22>> If you go to international lecture it's
- 13:24much much much
- 13:26>> right definitely definitely doctor. So
- 13:28here a lot of uh [music]
- 13:30senior dentists are not doing great in
- 13:32their their practice of facing a lot of
- 13:34challenges just like all the other
- 13:35participants on you. [music] What is it
- 13:37one thing that you would want to tell
- 13:39them that you think could Yeah.
- 13:43>> No no we start with that one. No see it
- 13:45is not uh [music] that uh they don't
- 13:49value it. They have not heard about it.
- 13:51So I think you need to do a basic
- 13:53program and then do the advanced program
- 13:54like what we did. actually [music] you
- 13:56should actually start getting a small
- 13:58basic program so that they understand
- 14:00what it is. See I had the opportunity to
- 14:02listen it from some of the leaders when
- 14:04it comes to business uh through chamber
- 14:06of commerces which I have been part of
- 14:08and we had paid for a [music] one day
- 14:10lecture we used to pay one lakh rupees
- 14:12for that so when you consider this
- 14:14months of learning and then that's
- 14:16totally different so [music] uh the
- 14:18value for money is there but the only
- 14:19thing is as dentist we don't look into
- 14:22management that much because uh oh we
- 14:24had one practice we have enough money uh
- 14:26we have social circles [music] and
- 14:28that's how we manage uh But to move out
- 14:31from that circle of [music] uh this
- 14:33thing, I think we need to understand
- 14:35more of management, how to grow, how to
- 14:38elaborate [music]
- 14:39uh and how to actually get more from our
- 14:42patients and get more to the patients
- 14:44also.
- 14:45>> That is the goal of [music] our
- 14:47everyday. So we need to evolve more and
- 14:49the new gen definitely will join. I
- 14:52don't think the old ones like me will uh
- 14:56come and join that way. But if you see
- 14:58somebody's you know practice evolving
- 15:01then they all will come. So definitely
- 15:02it's all like that. [music] So uh
- 15:05>> so it is very difficult to percolate the
- 15:07whole idea of management into it because
- 15:09we never had it. [music]
- 15:10>> Correct.
- 15:11>> Or you have a basic course then you put
- 15:13an advanced course then you should start
- 15:15an MBA on this. I think
- 15:18>> for sure.
- 15:19>> Lastly is there something from the
- 15:21program that you have taken away and
- 15:22already implemented in [music] your
- 15:23practice which has given you results? Ah
- 15:27see I have a channel YouTube channel and
- 15:29we used to
- 15:30>> what is it called doctor?
- 15:31>> It's called as pal doctor in mallayalam
- 15:33there is one called save the truth also.
- 15:36>> [music]
- 15:36>> Okay.
- 15:36>> And uh see we I every day uh every day I
- 15:40put one video or there. So but now what
- 15:42we have done is we have structured
- 15:43[music] it and we know what is the cash,
- 15:46what's the dogs and things like that and
- 15:48then we we tailor make each and then we
- 15:51divided it and then now we are giving
- 15:53much more importance [music] how we do
- 15:55it. So all those things have changed and
- 15:58now people are looking I never used to
- 16:00prepare before doing a video but now I
- 16:03know how to prepare and then we all got
- 16:05it. So [music] things like that have
- 16:07been uh put on and the changes have been
- 16:10seen slowly onto the stage. So now the
- 16:12staff [music] is asking why you are
- 16:13doing this why you are doing that slowly
- 16:16it is evolving. uh it's been uh 3 or 4
- 16:19months which we have been slowly
- 16:21implementing it and it has its own downs
- 16:24because it's something new which is
- 16:26coming and [music] and then we learn
- 16:28from the mistakes and then once again we
- 16:30implement it in a much better way and
- 16:32then we have improved much more we have
- 16:35uh we have become more consistent
- 16:37otherwise one one will get in the other
- 16:40one will go like that
- 16:41>> correct correct
- 16:42>> consistent consistency will come
- 16:45>> correct
- 16:46thank Thank you so much. It was very
- 16:47very helpful.
- 16:48>> Thank you. Thank [music] you. It was
- 16:49fantastic and being in ISB is one of our
- 16:53dreams like being in a business school
- 16:54because we are in a dental school.
- 16:57>> Right. Right. Definitely. I hope you are
- 16:58enjoying it now.
- 16:59>> After 35 years studying is another
- 17:01>> definitely right doctor.
- 17:04>> Thank you.
- 17:04>> Thank you very much. Thank you for
- 17:05inviting us into the gold collar and ISB
- 17:08program and I'll be part of it and and
- 17:10I'm happy to be the alumni of ISB now
- 17:13>> for sure doctor. Thank you so much.
