- 0:13Caylee Anthony the manner of death in
- 0:16this case is homicide it's the story
- 0:22that transfixed the nation an adorable
- 0:25two-year-old girl dad this is a child
- 0:28that was just dumped in the woods like a
- 0:30piece of trash
- 0:31a young hard-partying mother accused of
- 0:34being the killer in a verdict that stuns
- 0:39millions we the jury find the defendant
- 0:42not guilty but for all the media
- 0:46coverage interviews and legal testimony
- 0:49the whole story of Caylee Anthony hasn't
- 0:52been told until now for the first time
- 0:57we'll see the case through the eyes of
- 0:59dr. Jan Garibaldi Anna
- 1:01the medical examiner in charge of Talese
- 1:03autopsy and the star expert witness at
- 1:06her mother's trial this childhood duct
- 1:08tape over at floor faith in the main
- 1:11target of the defense attorneys attacks
- 1:13he has a nerve to call my work shoddy
- 1:18dr. G will expose intimate details never
- 1:21before revealed I just can't believe
- 1:24that actually that didn't come off the
- 1:26trial there's a lot more to this story
- 1:27than you guys have ever ever met and try
- 1:31to answer the question still on
- 1:33everyone's mind what happened to Kate
- 1:37the Anthony and it was really a
- 1:39horrendous piece of information
- 1:52911 what's your emergency
- 1:54the strange tragic case of little Caylee
- 1:57Anthony begins at 8:08 p.m. on July 15th
- 2:012008 with a panic rot 911
- 2:11Anthony Anthony the caller is Caylee
- 2:18Anthony's grandmother Cindy and the
- 2:21story she begins to tell police is
- 2:23astounding disturbing but also riddled
- 2:27with details that seemed to make no
- 2:29sense at all
- 2:37Caylee Marie Anthony is born August 9th
- 2:402005 in Orlando Florida
- 2:43her mother Casey is just 19 and still
- 2:47living at home with her own parents
- 2:49George and Cindy Anthony Caylee is a
- 2:52very happy child she called her
- 2:54grandfather Jojo she loved to swim
- 2:58she clearly looked like a very happy
- 3:01child
- 3:02[Music]
- 3:06in June of 2008 according to Cindy Casey
- 3:11tells her that she needs to go to
- 3:12Jacksonville for work and she's going to
- 3:15take Kayla with her she told them she
- 3:17had a job she told them she worked at
- 3:20Universal Studios several weeks pass
- 3:23without incident then on July 15th 2008
- 3:27things take an unexpected turn Cindy and
- 3:31George Anthony discovered that their
- 3:33daughter's car was abandoned at a strip
- 3:35mall parking lot and has been towed to
- 3:37an impound lot in Orlando but what is
- 3:41KC's car doing in Orlando when she's
- 3:44supposed to be in Jacksonville unable to
- 3:47reach his daughter
- 3:48KC's father George claims the car from
- 3:50the impound lot it's a trip that brings
- 3:53an unsettling discovery when he got to
- 3:56the Pontiac at the Recker yard it
- 3:58wreaked he was a former law enforcement
- 4:00officer George knows when a dead body
- 4:03smells like and he really thought to
- 4:05himself I really hope paleo or KC I'm
- 4:09not gonna find them in this trunk
- 4:11George opens the trunk and finds a bag
- 4:14of trash for the moment he's relieved
- 4:17but they still haven't heard from KC
- 4:20Cindy Anthony was able to track down KC
- 4:23at her boyfriend's house that's when
- 4:26Casey told her that Caylee was missing
- 4:28she had been gone for 30 days she was
- 4:35supposedly kidnapped by a nanny
- 4:40that's when Cindy calls 9-1-1 Cindy goes
- 4:51on to give the 9-1-1 operator some
- 4:54disturbing information meanwhile Casey
- 5:05did get on the line and seemed rather
- 5:08calm can you tell me a little bit what's
- 5:11going on my daughter's been missing for
- 5:13the last 31 days why are you calling now
- 5:16why didn't she call 31 days ago I've
- 5:17been looking for her and have gone
- 5:20through other resources to try to find
- 5:22her which was stupid if my kids were
- 5:27gone for 31 seconds it would I freaked
- 5:32out
- 5:32I can't imagine 31 days I really don't
- 5:37remember when I first heard that there
- 5:39was a toddler missing in Orlando but you
- 5:42couldn't help but knowing about it
- 5:44it became a huge news story in this
- 5:47community detective URI Mellish is
- 5:53assigned to the case when he arrives at
- 5:56the Anthony's home his first priority is
- 5:58to get information about the nanny who
- 6:00Casey claims has abducted her daughter
- 6:03you took Casey to babysit ourselves yes
- 6:07is there anything about this store that
- 6:09you're telling me that is untrue or is
- 6:11there anything that you want to change
- 6:12or divert from what you've already told
- 6:13me missing after hours of interviewing
- 6:16Casey police launched a full-scale
- 6:18investigation led by detective MELAS
- 6:22it begins with a visit to the home of
- 6:24the nanny but when police arrive
- 6:28the apartment is vacant the babysitter
- 6:32so far as anyone can determine never
- 6:35actually existed though she was
- 6:38described in great detail by Casey on
- 6:41more than one occasion and that's not
- 6:44the only thing about Casey's story that
- 6:46doesn't add up Casey was claiming that
- 6:49she worked at Universal Studios had a
- 6:50job as an event planner the police went
- 6:53to Universal and determined that in fact
- 6:55she didn't work there she hadn't worked
- 6:56there in over a year
- 6:58investigators proved through cellphone
- 7:00records that Casey never left Orlando
- 7:02the entire month on July 16th nearly 24
- 7:06hours after the 911 Casey Anthony is
- 7:10arrested and charged with aggravated
- 7:12child neglect and lying to investigators
- 7:16Casey denies the charge and immediately
- 7:19hires a lawyer Jose Baez Baez was a
- 7:24relatively unknown attorney Baez
- 7:27declares that Casey is innocent Casey
- 7:29doesn't know where Caylee is she was
- 7:36family and we're here to move forward at
- 7:39finding Caylee meanwhile pictures
- 7:43surfaced on the internet showing Casey
- 7:45out partying even entering a hot body
- 7:48contest during the time she claimed to
- 7:50be looking for Caylee in one photo she's
- 7:53showing off a new tattoo and the tattoo
- 7:56artist who etched bellavita or beautiful
- 7:58life on Casey's back two weeks after
- 8:01Caylee disappeared told us all Casey
- 8:03talked about with her new boyfriend
- 8:05the story of a missing little girl and
- 8:08the sexy photos of her mother plastered
- 8:10on the Internet
- 8:11cause an instant media frenzy when these
- 8:14pictures were taken on to 20th at fusion
- 8:16Ultra Lounge in Orlando Casey's daughter
- 8:19had been missing for five days we have a
- 8:25mother whose actions and activities are
- 8:28inconsistent with a mother whose child
- 8:31has gone missing and that she does not
- 8:34know where her child is or what happened
- 8:36to her child while Casey sits in jail
- 8:43authorities launch a massive hunt for
- 8:45her daughter George and Cindy Anthony
- 8:48are at the forefront of the search Cindy
- 8:51and George wholeheartedly believe their
- 8:53granddaughter is still alive and their
- 8:54daughter is innocent she is not dead
- 8:58hundreds of people came out to search
- 9:00for her coming up as the hunt for Caylee
- 9:05continues police uncover shocking new
- 9:09evidence that will turn the case upside
- 9:12down
- 9:17and it was really a horrendous piece of
- 9:20information by October of 2008
- 9:31two-year-old kami Anthony has been
- 9:33missing for four months as the search
- 9:36for her continues law enforcement
- 9:39officials conduct a forensic exam of her
- 9:41mother's car the vehicle had been in
- 9:44Casey's possession from the last time
- 9:46Caylee was seen until it was towed and
- 9:49then eventually reclaimed by the
- 9:51Anthony's and the police received it the
- 9:53police first test the air inside the
- 9:56trunk and detect high levels of
- 9:58chloroform a chemical that could be used
- 10:00to render someone unconscious it's an
- 10:03unexpected finding and it isn't long
- 10:05before investigators uncover even more
- 10:07startling evidence in the trunk a
- 10:09Caucasian head hair found exhibits
- 10:12characteristics of apparent
- 10:14decomposition at the root a
- 10:16mitochondrial DNA test goes on to say
- 10:18that the hair could belong to Kaylee if
- 10:20the report is accurate that hair would
- 10:22have fallen off Kaylee's dead body
- 10:28investigators now believe that Kaylee is
- 10:31dead and that at some point her dead
- 10:34body was in the trunk of her mother's
- 10:36car
- 10:37it's always hard to prove a murder
- 10:40without a body but we felt that between
- 10:43the odor evidence in the car and the
- 10:45hair and the chloroform which was found
- 10:48in the trunk we just felt was sufficient
- 10:50to give it to the grand jury
- 10:53[Music]
- 10:57with this evidence 22 year old Casey
- 11:00Anthony is charged with her daughter's
- 11:02murder an Orange County grand jury has
- 11:05issued an indictment on the following
- 11:07charges first-degree murder aggravated
- 11:10child abuse aggravated manslaughter of a
- 11:14child and four counts providing false
- 11:17information to a law enforcement on
- 11:21December 11th 2008 two months after
- 11:24Casey Anthony is charged with murder a
- 11:26meter reader from the City of Orlando
- 11:28named Roy crock takes a break and walks
- 11:32into an overgrown field some 20 feet off
- 11:34the road in a residential area where
- 11:37something catches his eye and then he
- 11:40must have unnoticed you know this
- 11:42probably is a sculpt he notifies his
- 11:45boss who immediately calls 911
- 11:48[Music]
- 11:52occasionally found a human skull unlike
- 11:55a Hodge lead detective yuri Mellish in
- 12:00turn calls Steve Hansen dr. G's chief
- 12:03investigator and Ouray said Steve we
- 12:06found a skeleton and I'm going okay he
- 12:10said we think it could be Caylee Anthony
- 12:13and I'm going and they're kidding me
- 12:16right
- 12:16and I turned to Steve and I said unless
- 12:19it's really important don't bother me
- 12:21with it
- 12:22and he goes it is they found a skeleton
- 12:25near the home of where Casey Anthony
- 12:27lived and I my heart sank
- 12:33once the body was discovered it was a
- 12:36real game-changer because there's going
- 12:38to be forensic evidence either
- 12:41associated with the body or the area
- 12:44where the body was found all they found
- 12:46is a skull of a small child they believe
- 12:49is a little girl Caylee Anthony who's
- 12:51been missing since June we knew at this
- 12:55point the eyes of at least Orlando were
- 12:58on us we didn't realize that the eyes of
- 13:01the country even the world were on us
- 13:03[Music]
- 13:06when I drove up to the scene it was a
- 13:09zoo there are media trucks there are
- 13:14crowds of people there are police cars
- 13:19dancing meets detective Mellish at the
- 13:21scene who leads him to a densely wooded
- 13:23swampy area scattered among the leaves
- 13:29are some small bones the skull two
- 13:32garbage bags and a laundry bag there are
- 13:35also remnants of a toddler size t-shirt
- 13:38and shorts along with a baby blanket it
- 13:42clearly had the pattern of we need to
- 13:45poo with piglet on its back this is
- 13:48clearly a baby blanket it just makes it
- 13:52a little sadder my first thought was
- 14:00let's get the right team dr. G
- 14:03immediately calls John Schultz a
- 14:05forensic anthropologist from the
- 14:07University of Central Florida and an
- 14:09expert in the recovery and
- 14:11identification of skeletal remains I am
- 14:14often called whenever there is a
- 14:16skeletal dispersal to work with the
- 14:19law-enforcement agency that's involved
- 14:22dr. G also calls in dr. Michael Warren a
- 14:25University of Florida professor and
- 14:27forensic anthropologist who specializes
- 14:30in analyzing children skeletons everyone
- 14:33has a specific research interest and um
- 14:35have some experience with juveniles with
- 14:39the help of the Orange County crime
- 14:41scene personnel dr. G and her team
- 14:43carefully document and recover the
- 14:45evidence and bones that are scattered in
- 14:48a radius over 30 feet there was evidence
- 14:53on the bones where animals had to choose
- 14:56remains taking parts of the skeleton
- 14:58away they found bones that were smaller
- 15:03than the nail on your little finger in
- 15:06dense underbrush unbelievable the job
- 15:12and the documentation they did when they
- 15:15study the location and pattern of the
- 15:17bones dr. G and her team make a key
- 15:20discovery the body of the child had to
- 15:23have been placed out there prior to
- 15:25really any significant decomposition
- 15:28these bones had to have been there for
- 15:32months and there was nothing
- 15:34inconsistent with them being placed
- 15:36there about the time she went missing
- 15:41and that's very important this is a
- 15:43child that was just dumped in the woods
- 15:46like a piece of trash
- 15:48[Music]
- 15:51it was my job to not only identify the
- 15:55body but to determine the cause of
- 15:58manner of death or to collect any
- 16:00information from that body that could
- 16:03help us piece together what happened dr.
- 16:07G sends the tibia or shin bone the most
- 16:10intact bone recovered to the FBI lab for
- 16:13identification to find out if the
- 16:15remains are indeed Kaylee's but the
- 16:18results won't come back for seven days
- 16:21in the meantime dr. G continues her
- 16:25examination whenever you do a forensic
- 16:28exam you have to listen to what their
- 16:30body's telling it coming on it would be
- 16:34an autopsy for the history books
- 16:36and one with secrets that would never
- 16:38make it into the newspapers toward the
- 16:41courtroom sometimes the body scream out
- 16:44what happened and sometimes they whisper
- 16:52[Music]
- 16:56in the district nine morgue in Orlando
- 16:59Florida
- 16:59and chief medical examiner dr. G turns
- 17:02to the evidence photos of the skeleton
- 17:04believed to be the missing two-year-old
- 17:06Caylee Anthony but one picture in
- 17:10particular concerns her the most it's a
- 17:12pretty horrendous picture this childhood
- 17:15duct tape over its lower face even
- 17:20though the glue on this duct tape has
- 17:22disintegrated and only the mesh remains
- 17:25incredibly it is still attached to the
- 17:28hair
- 17:28the air is kinda all intertwined in that
- 17:31mesh and it was attached to it then dr.
- 17:35G looks at what's under the tape lo and
- 17:38behold all the teeth we're still present
- 17:41in the man was
- 17:43incredible particularly with a child ja
- 17:48a little tiny baby teeth they don't have
- 17:50any roots they come right out not only
- 17:54are the teeth still in place but the jaw
- 17:57is still attached to the skull normally
- 18:01there's nothing holding the jaw or
- 18:04mandible to the skull there's nothing
- 18:08that keeps it together when you
- 18:09decompose it and for dr. G this finding
- 18:12is both disturbing and telling the doc
- 18:16gave told off then it was put there
- 18:19before she started decompose the
- 18:25question is was it over her nose was it
- 18:28over her mouth it was certainly in that
- 18:31area could I have gone out on the limb
- 18:34and say she suffocated with that tape I
- 18:37can't say for certain but that duct tape
- 18:41was put there for a reason
- 18:43[Music]
- 18:48dr. G and her team also inspect the
- 18:51skull for any signs of trauma that could
- 18:54give her a definitive cause of death we
- 18:56examined it on the outside we examine it
- 18:58on the inside we x-rayed it there is no
- 19:02reason to open it we were able to look
- 19:04inside that skull with a light with a
- 19:06mirror
- 19:07we do a very thorough examination and
- 19:13that child had no traumatic injury to
- 19:15the skull doctor G and her team turned
- 19:21their attention from the skull to the
- 19:23rest of the body what was really telling
- 19:26and this is really important is that
- 19:28there are reutlitz little roots growing
- 19:31into the bone when the roots are growing
- 19:34into a bone the bone has to be totally
- 19:37decomposed first roots don't grow into
- 19:40rotting flesh roots also don't go into
- 19:43moving objects
- 19:45this finding reinforces what dr. G and
- 19:48her team found at the scene where the
- 19:50remains were recovered namely that the
- 19:53body had been lying there for a long
- 19:55time about the same time Cayley went
- 19:58missing those bones were there for
- 20:01months she was stopped at the very early
- 20:05stages of her decomposing those are
- 20:08things we know by the science next the
- 20:13doctors take a closer look at each bone
- 20:15individually searching for clues about
- 20:18how this child died we're looking at the
- 20:21bones under the dissecting microscope
- 20:23and that was mostly the work of dr.
- 20:25Warren and dr. Schultz they're looking
- 20:27for any kind of subtle fractures old or
- 20:30new blows to the chest area which may be
- 20:36caused some hairline fractures or a
- 20:39knife that may be nicked the rib of
- 20:43anything that might help us indicate
- 20:46trauma hit by a car rolled over any
- 20:54but their detailed exam yields no
- 20:57definitive cause of death there was just
- 21:00absolutely no signs of traumatic injury
- 21:01to that child
- 21:06if we didn't find anything it didn't
- 21:08really mean that didn't happen still
- 21:12searching for a cause of death
- 21:13dr. G has one last place to look
- 21:17toxicology at least needed to be
- 21:20attempted and it wasn't going to be
- 21:22conventional toxicology conventional
- 21:25toxicology is we take blood or tissue
- 21:27samples and analyze it
- 21:29these were dry bones and when I mean dry
- 21:33bones
- 21:33there is no soft tissue on those bones
- 21:37and there is no marrow inside those
- 21:40cavities it's dry right as a bone we
- 21:45knew it was a long shot to find any kind
- 21:46of drugs in the bone we're trying to
- 21:53leave no stone unturned if there was
- 21:55something that could be answered from
- 21:58this body we want her to find it I
- 22:01called dr. Goldberger up at the
- 22:04University of Florida with a prominent
- 22:07toxicologist and asked if he could help
- 22:12we looked for illicit drugs prescription
- 22:15drugs over-the-counter drugs a whole
- 22:17wide range of features of different
- 22:19types of drugs we wanted to check for
- 22:22chloroform because we clearly knew from
- 22:27both the media at this point and from
- 22:30the police that there was some
- 22:32connection with chloroform
- 22:34if chloroform was given to Kelly it
- 22:38would have knocked her out traces of
- 22:43chloroform can linger in the air for
- 22:45over a month and confined spaces like
- 22:48the trunk of a car but it's a very
- 22:50different story in a body or skeleton
- 22:52chloroform doesn't have a half-life even
- 22:55of a few days so when the results come
- 23:01back from the lab as dr. G anticipated
- 23:04there's no evidence of any drugs in the
- 23:08end we found no chloroform no evidence
- 23:11of intoxicants at all in any of the
- 23:15samples that we evaluated could someone
- 23:18have given a drug or substance to Kelly
- 23:21and have killed her the answer is yes
- 23:26although I strongly suspect that it was
- 23:30an asphyxia type of death possibly mixed
- 23:33with drugs wasn't enough to give the
- 23:37cause of death then on December 19th the
- 23:43results of the DNA testing come back
- 23:46from the FBI they told us this is Caylee
- 23:49Marie Anthony the chance of someone else
- 23:54having that same DNA was one in two
- 23:57point nine trillion trillion that was
- 24:01good enough for me after a thorough
- 24:06examination in the field and in the
- 24:09morgue dr. G also knows the matter of
- 24:11Caylee's death the manner of death
- 24:15though is an opinion based on available
- 24:19information including examination of the
- 24:22body information from the scene as well
- 24:25as circumstantial evidence based on all
- 24:28of this the manner of death in this case
- 24:31is homicide
- 24:34I truly felt by the circumstances by the
- 24:38duct tape by the way she was thrown into
- 24:41those plastic bags and hidden and left
- 24:43to rot that this was a homicide I don't
- 24:45speak for the state I don't speak for
- 24:49the police I don't speak for any lawyers
- 24:51I don't speak for any defendants I speak
- 24:54to try to find the truth now with dr.
- 25:02G's official ruling of homicide lawyers
- 25:05on both sides get ready for the trial of
- 25:08the century coming up
- 25:13the prosecution reveals their disturbing
- 25:16theory of how Caylee was murdered why
- 25:18would you put duct tape over the face of
- 25:20a child is that still a possibility of
- 25:28how she died you bet
- 25:32[Music]
- 25:34on May 24th 2011 almost three years
- 25:39after two-year-old Caylee Anthony went
- 25:41missing her mother Casey is about to
- 25:45stand trial for murder
- 25:50Casey was indicted on first-degree
- 25:52murder charges based largely on forensic
- 25:54evidence some more to this story than
- 25:57you guys have ever have our men in South
- 26:00America
- 26:05people lined up in the middle of the
- 26:07night to try to get tickets for for that
- 26:10trial everyone wanted to try to get a
- 26:15glimpse of history it was clearly a
- 26:17media circus you see the huge crowd is
- 26:20the biggest crowd that has been here
- 26:21their deputies here sort of trying to
- 26:23control the chaos going into the trial
- 26:32many who have been following the case
- 26:34believe a guilty verdict is likely
- 26:41as difficult as it may be for anyone to
- 26:44accept that his mother would
- 26:47attentionally kill her own child from
- 26:51the evidence that you will hear in this
- 26:53case there is no other conclusion that
- 26:58could be drawn one of the prosecution's
- 27:04most compelling arguments is the fact
- 27:06that Casey did not report her daughter
- 27:08missing for 31 days no mom is not gonna
- 27:12know where their kid is for 31 days and
- 27:15not do something about it
- 27:17another cornerstone of the prosecution's
- 27:20case is Casey statement about a
- 27:22non-existent babysitter kidnapping
- 27:24Caylee
- 27:25she comes up with stories that had no
- 27:28basis in fact that were lies that it's
- 27:31so classic with a child death of a
- 27:34homicide but some of the most damning
- 27:37evidence the prosecution points to is
- 27:39from Casey's own car the dead body smell
- 27:43the strand of Kaylee's decomposing hair
- 27:45and the levels of chloroform even more
- 27:50alarming is the discovery that somebody
- 27:52in the Anthony's home looked up how to
- 27:54make chloroform on the computer three
- 27:57months before Caylee disappeared
- 28:02on Friday March 21st 2008 who will
- 28:06search conducted for how to make
- 28:09chloroform next their prosecution moves
- 28:16on to the most horrific finding the
- 28:19pieces of duct tape recovered from
- 28:21Caylee skull there are three overlapping
- 28:23of pieces of duct tape not one piece of
- 28:26duct tape but three pieces of duct tape
- 28:30this child was found in a field
- 28:34decomposed the duct tape somewhere
- 28:38located on the lower half of this face
- 28:42why would someone put duct tape over the
- 28:45nose and mouth of a child the only
- 28:48reason you come up with is because you
- 28:50don't want them to breathe anymore
- 28:51it was the prosecution theory that
- 28:54either the child died as a result of
- 28:57chloroform or core form which enabled
- 28:59the perpetrator to place duct tape over
- 29:03the child's mouth and nose and suffocate
- 29:06her you put the various elements
- 29:10together the chloroform in the trunk the
- 29:14odor in the trunk from a dead body and
- 29:16the hair and the only scenario that
- 29:18explained all of it was that Casey had
- 29:22used chloroform to render Caylee
- 29:26unconscious and basically killed her
- 29:29[Music]
- 29:31but then the defense gives their
- 29:34shocking version of what happened to
- 29:36Katlin
- 29:37this is not a murder case this is not a
- 29:40manslaughter case her death was covered
- 29:43up coming up for the very first time dr.
- 29:47G responds to the defense's explosive
- 29:50accusations he has the nerve to call my
- 29:54work shot in May 2011 the murder trial
- 30:05of Casey Anthony is heating on as the
- 30:08defense is about to present their
- 30:10shocking theory as to how her
- 30:12two-year-old daughter Caylee died
- 30:17[Music]
- 30:20Haley Anthony died on June 16 2008 when
- 30:24she drowned in her family's swimming
- 30:26pool the defense claims that George
- 30:31Anthony found Caylee dead drowned in the
- 30:34family pool when Casey wasn't watching
- 30:37her then they imply George disposed of
- 30:41Caylee's body in the swamp where she was
- 30:44eventually found her death was covered
- 30:47up this is not a murder case this is not
- 30:52a manslaughter case this is a sad tragic
- 30:57accident that snowball out of control
- 31:02when dr. G is called to the stand she
- 31:05testifies this scenario is completely
- 31:07out of line with how parents react
- 31:09during an accidental drowning I have
- 31:12over 20 years of experience dealing with
- 31:14mothers whose children have died
- 31:17accidentally this is not how they react
- 31:20when the person finds the child they
- 31:26call 911 because there is a chance that
- 31:28that child might live and what if the
- 31:32person finds and obviously drowned body
- 31:35so obviously deceased what this no
- 31:40matter how stiff that body is they
- 31:44always call 911
- 31:46[Music]
- 31:48in the past ten years we've had over 120
- 31:52cases of kids under six drown in pools
- 31:55they're all transported they're all
- 31:57calling 911 I've had mothers on crack
- 32:02cocaine that kids die and they're still
- 32:05devastated they're screaming because you
- 32:07don't know how long that kid was in the
- 32:09water and you want to try to save it
- 32:13nothing fits a drowning there's not one
- 32:17shred of evidence that that occurred
- 32:20then the defense rips apart the
- 32:23prosecution's theory that Casey looked
- 32:25up how to make chloroform on the
- 32:27computer they assert that the search was
- 32:30actually done by her mother Cindy was
- 32:34looking up chlorophyll a green pigment
- 32:36found in plants
- 32:38I started looking at Quora fill and then
- 32:40that prompted me to look up Cora form
- 32:44the defense points to the fact that dr.
- 32:47G and the toxicologist dr. Goldberger
- 32:49found no trace of chloroform or any
- 32:52drugs and Kaylie's remains we found
- 32:55nothing we found no volatile but dr. G
- 32:59is not given the chance to make it clear
- 33:02to the jury that traces of chloroform in
- 33:04the body dissipate in less than a few
- 33:06days so it would be impossible to find
- 33:10after six months we couldn't find drugs
- 33:13and couldn't find even products of
- 33:16decomposition it was just nothing there
- 33:19does that mean that there was never drug
- 33:22in her no it can't be found any more
- 33:24things break down I'm not saying it was
- 33:29never there I'm saying it couldn't be
- 33:30found is that still a possibility of how
- 33:33she died you got mixed bias suggest the
- 33:38duct tape could just as well have been
- 33:39used to bind the bags Haley was wooded
- 33:42and never used to cover her mouth or
- 33:44nose yeah as to whether this tape was
- 33:49used to wrapped Keeley's remains
- 33:53although the defense tries to contradict
- 33:56dr. G's scientific findings she knows
- 34:00that the duct tape was put on Callie's
- 34:02face before or during the early stages
- 34:05of decomposition during decomposition at
- 34:08your bow falls off because it's heavy
- 34:11but this one was together and the only
- 34:14explanation is that tape protecting it
- 34:20this is a horrendous piece of
- 34:23information when you think of already
- 34:25this child have been put in a bag put in
- 34:28another bag thrown into a canvas bag
- 34:31toss behind a riding log and also had
- 34:35duct tape attached to the face there is
- 34:39no child that should have duct tape on
- 34:42its face when it dies there is no reason
- 34:46to put duct tape on the face after they
- 34:50done next there's a fence set on proving
- 34:55that Caylee was not a victim of homicide
- 34:57begins to chip away at dr. G's autopsy
- 35:00by calling in their own medical examiner
- 35:03dr. Werner Spitz dr. Spitz who did his
- 35:08own autopsy of Kaylee's remains states
- 35:10that one of his sharpest criticisms of
- 35:13dr. G is that she did not open Kaylee
- 35:16skull
- 35:17[Music]
- 35:19to not open the head I think if a
- 35:22failure where the head is not opened
- 35:26that tells me about a shoddy autopsy he
- 35:30dwelled on this failure to open the
- 35:33skull which was nothing more than smoke
- 35:36in mirrors dr. G is not called to the
- 35:41witness stand after dr. Spitz so she
- 35:44never gets the chance to explain to the
- 35:46jury that in her opinion his logic is
- 35:49not only flawed but also irrelevant
- 35:52considering it was a completely dry
- 35:54skeleton there was no reason to open
- 35:57that skull we could clearly see in the
- 36:00sky we looked inside there was nothing
- 36:02there but dirt at the base of the skull
- 36:05if we had cut the skull the skull would
- 36:08have fallen apart in our hands which is
- 36:11exactly what happened when dr. Spitz got
- 36:14open Kayle skull during his exam I
- 36:19didn't know that broken he broke it he
- 36:24caused a fracture and it fell apart and
- 36:26then he has a nerve to call my work
- 36:29shoddy
- 36:32but the defense doesn't let up on its
- 36:34contention that Kaylee died by accident
- 36:36and in order to convince the jury they
- 36:39attacked the very foundation of dr. G's
- 36:42findings dr. Jan Gaurav agnya you would
- 36:46think that you can get a medical
- 36:48examiner to come and talk to you about
- 36:50medicine about science a person on the
- 36:56street riding a bicycle could give you
- 36:58these same facts and say the same thing
- 37:01this is not science I don't know what
- 37:05they're talking about with the
- 37:06examination of the body the conclusions
- 37:10were scientifically defensible that is
- 37:14not a principle that I make up it's not
- 37:18because this was a high-profile case
- 37:20that I wanted to do a thorough job this
- 37:23is a two-year home a little girl it was
- 37:26found in the woods coming up dr. G
- 37:31reveals how she knows Caylee was
- 37:33murdered the circumstances tell a
- 37:37tremendous amount
- 37:46the defense in the Casey Anthony murder
- 37:49trial is doing everything they can to
- 37:51tear apart the prosecution's contention
- 37:52that two year old Caylee Anthony was
- 37:55murdered by her mother now they are
- 37:59attacking dr. G's ruling do you have an
- 38:01opinion as to the manner of death
- 38:04homicide
- 38:08the defense relentlessly hammers home
- 38:11the fact that dr. G can't come to a
- 38:13conclusion as to how he was killed
- 38:16despite the investigations the
- 38:18toxicology the anthropologist all of
- 38:22these things there is no scientific or
- 38:26medical evidence to establish all of
- 38:28this child's death I believe we can
- 38:31reliably say it's a homicide but I don't
- 38:36know the means for which that homicide
- 38:39occurred so the bottom line is when you
- 38:43say and you place a label homicide the
- 38:46indeterminate means you're saying that
- 38:50circumstantial evidence to you says that
- 38:52it probably was a homicide the
- 38:57circumstances of death did not fit
- 39:00anything but a homicide circumstances
- 39:04yes
- 39:06it is modern practice of forensic
- 39:09pathology to look at all the situations
- 39:13you cannot make an anatomic diagnosis as
- 39:16far as the manner of death it's always
- 39:19based on everything the body the scene
- 39:22history in this case the circumstances
- 39:27tell a tremendous amount first of all
- 39:31not reporting her missing for 31 days
- 39:34then coming up with a story that she's
- 39:36kidnapped and none of that
- 39:38fit on why this child was found down the
- 39:44street from her house in a plastic bag
- 39:46hid with duct tape over its face there
- 39:48is no reason for a two-year-old child to
- 39:52decompose in a field in a plastic bag
- 39:56with duct tape over its face
- 39:59it's clearly a homicide
- 40:03the defense was unable to shake her on
- 40:06that point we just felt that the
- 40:11evidence was so overwhelming that the
- 40:15jury would find her guilty
- 40:20the trial draws to a close as the nation
- 40:23anxiously awaits a verdict
- 40:27[Music]
- 40:30people drove to downtown Orlando just to
- 40:33be outside the courthouse to hear the
- 40:36verdict being rendered it was chaotic
- 40:38people were screaming they don't have to
- 40:43wait long on July 5th 2011 after
- 40:48deliberating just 11 hours the jury
- 40:50reaches a verdict as to the charge of
- 40:59first-degree murder we the jury find the
- 41:01defendant not guilty
- 41:04Casey Anthony is convicted of only 4
- 41:08misdemeanor counts of lying to law
- 41:10enforcement
- 41:12it was just unimaginable to me that 12
- 41:15people could look at that evidence and
- 41:19not find her guilty
- 41:23I don't understand people who think
- 41:26Elvis is still alive I don't understand
- 41:29people who think that we never landed on
- 41:32the moon I don't get those people so I
- 41:35don't get these people either
- 41:37I think this jury was waiting for that
- 41:40CSI moment I don't think they had a
- 41:43clear understanding that a
- 41:45circumstantial evidence case can be more
- 41:49compelling than a case where there is
- 41:51eyewitness testimony and that
- 41:54misconception I believe in no small part
- 41:58led to the not guilty verdict in this
- 42:01case the fact that dr. she couldn't say
- 42:05the duct tape killed her the chloroform
- 42:07killed her that was all they heard that
- 42:09was all they that was all that mattered
- 42:11you know if we couldn't say that then
- 42:14that was the end for them how the trial
- 42:15ended up is not something I have control
- 42:18over and it's not my job and I don't
- 42:21deal with guilt or innocence I deal with
- 42:23the fact that we can find many people
- 42:27react to the verdict with disbelief and
- 42:31outrage I think they felt that justice
- 42:34wasn't served at least not for Kaylie
- 42:37because in all of this it seems that
- 42:39Kaylie got lost everything was about KC
- 42:42and nothing was about the toddler
- 42:45[Music]
- 43:04yeah the sad part is that people would
- 43:06like closure on this case I wish I could
- 43:09have given it tone I wish some day we
- 43:13knew what happened
- 43:16the little Kaylie Marie but I can tell
- 43:19you it was a
- 43:23[Music]
- 43:30you
- 43:30[Music]
