Does the First 30 Minutes Predict the Rest of the NQ Trading Day? — Transcript

- 0:00Two NASDAQ future sessions. By 10:00 in
- 0:03the morning, both had rallied about 207
- 0:05points. Their opening ranges were nearly
- 0:08the same width, too. Then, one fell 276
- 0:12points into the close. The other gained
- 0:15another 275.
- 0:17Same opening, opposite endings. So, what
- 0:20did the first 30 minutes actually tell
- 0:21us? Across 408 sessions, it turned out
- 0:24to say very little about direction and
- 0:27quite a lot about something else.
- 0:35Here's the test. Take only the trades
- 0:37between 9:30 and 10:00 in the morning
- 0:39Eastern Time. Measure two things: how
- 0:41far price moved and the distance from
- 0:43the highest price to the lowest. That
- 0:45second number is the opening range.
- 0:48Then, look at a completely separate
- 0:49window, 10:00 to the close at 4:00.
- 0:52Keeping those apart matters. If you
- 0:54compare the opening move against the
- 0:55whole day, the opening is already inside
- 0:57the answer. We want to know what it says
- 0:59about what comes next. The sample runs
- 1:02from December 2024 through August 2026,
- 1:05and the last 149 sessions were held back
- 1:07to check whether anything we found still
- 1:09held in a later period. First,
- 1:11direction. If the opening was up,
- 1:14predict a further rise into the close.
- 1:16If it was down, predict a further fall.
- 1:18That was right on 53.7%
- 1:21of sessions, slightly better than a coin
- 1:23flip. Except the uncertainty interval
- 1:25ran from about 49 to 58%. It contains
- 1:2950. So, this sample did not establish a
- 1:32dependable directional edge.
- 1:34That isn't an argument for fading every
- 1:36opening move. It means direction alone
- 1:38wasn't enough.
- 1:45Now, look at those two days again. One
- 1:47reversed, one continued, but both
- 1:50covered a lot of ground after 10:00,
- 1:52roughly 470 points and 435.
- 1:56That's the distinction. A market can
- 1:58travel a long way whether it finishes
- 2:00higher or lower.
- 2:02Across the full sample, wider opening
- 2:05ranges tended to be followed by wider
- 2:07remaining ranges. The rank correlation
- 2:09was 0.55.
- 2:11In the held-out sessions, it was still
- 2:13positive at 0.43.
- 2:15Those are associations, not win rates.
- 2:18They don't tell you where price will
- 2:19finish, but the range relationship was
- 2:21clearer than the directional one, and it
- 2:23survived into data the study hadn't
- 2:25seen.
- 2:34There's one more reason to be careful
- 2:36with the opening high and low. In just
- 2:39over a third of sessions, 36%, price
- 2:42eventually broke both of them.
- 2:44Breaking a level and following through
- 2:46are different events. Crossing a line is
- 2:48not by itself a forecast.
- 2:55This covers fewer than two years, and it
- 2:58didn't test a strategy. No entries, no
- 3:01stops, no costs. The useful part is
- 3:04about expectations.
- 3:06A wide opening range was associated with
- 3:09a wider range afterwards. An opening
- 3:11rally or sell-off did not make
- 3:14continuation dependable. At 10:00, the
- 3:17open told us more about how much room
- 3:19price might cover than about where it
- 3:21would end up.
