Does It Ever Get Easier to Fire Someone? — Transcript

- 0:00Q, I am a team lead but I removed two
- 0:02guys without prior notice. How could I
- 0:05have done it better? Was it better to
- 0:06give notice? Also, in general, I have a
- 0:08hard time letting go of my members.
- 0:10Listen, man, um or not man.
- 0:13Uh
- 0:13it's never easy to let go of people as
- 0:16long as you have uh a heart.
- 0:18And so, I don't think it really gets
- 0:20easier. I think that you become more
- 0:22skilled at maintaining your emotions and
- 0:25keeping them in check and being able to
- 0:27make the decision faster rather than
- 0:28avoiding it for extended periods of
- 0:29time. I'd say one of the big differences
- 0:31between advanced business owners and
- 0:33more beginner business owners is that
- 0:34beginner business owners will keep
- 0:36laggards and bad teammates on the team
- 0:39way longer than advanced business
- 0:40owners. It's not that like advanced
- 0:42business owners somehow get it right
- 0:44every time. It's just that when it's
- 0:45wrong, they make the action a lot
- 0:47faster. Um in terms of um letting it go,
- 0:51the big issue is that you have to make
- 0:52sure that you're prioritizing the
- 0:53business and everyone else who works for
- 0:55it. And so, let's say you have 10
- 0:57employees.
- 0:58Um
- 0:59if you've got two people who are, you
- 1:01know, pulling the team down, you're
- 1:02literally sacrificing the other eight
- 1:04because you don't want to have a hard
- 1:05conversation with two. And so, you are
- 1:08disserving the team and the business and
- 1:10ultimately their long-term because if
- 1:11you don't do this, the business could
- 1:12eventually shrink down to you actually
- 1:15are forced to let people go rather than
- 1:17doing it proactively. And so, it's
- 1:19always better to fire when you don't
- 1:21have to than when you absolutely have
- 1:22to. Um and so, I would always prefer to
- 1:25get ahead and operate from a position of
- 1:26strength rather than wait until the
- 1:28point where I actually have no choice.
- 1:29And then mental frame that I give
- 1:30myself, and this is really useful, is
- 1:33if I were Let's fast-forward this. Let's
- 1:35assume the business was breaking even or
- 1:36losing money.
- 1:38What would you do then? How would you
- 1:40feel at that point about letting them
- 1:41go? You probably would feel very
- 1:42different. You'd be like, "Well, we have
- 1:43to do this, right?" And so, if in that
- 1:46setting you would feel okay about doing
- 1:47it and in this setting you don't feel
- 1:49okay about it, then it means that it's
- 1:51just the narrative that you're telling
- 1:52yourself, but the action still remains
- 1:53the same for them and so does the
- 1:55outcome. And so, if what we're doing by
- 1:58taking these actions we're preventing
- 1:59this outcome from happening eventually
- 2:01because at that point you still put
- 2:02everyone else at risk versus just two
- 2:04people.
- 2:06And uh in terms of notice, I think you
- 2:08want to let people know when they're
- 2:09messing up and the consequences of
- 2:11continuing to mess up, but I wouldn't
- 2:14say like we're going to fire you unless
- 2:16you're required by law depending on what
- 2:17state or If you like this video and
- 2:18you're a business owner who wants to
