  6. 0:45we have this public image of India's
  7. 0:47peaceful and pluralistic doesn't compute

  15. 1:12handily
  16. 1:17it's a very Darwinian process in the end
  17. 1:19and that's what we're seeing and we're
  18. 1:21seeing it at its most vicious right now
  19. 1:24our Christians being
  20. 1:28disproportionately victimized are they
  21. 1:30the victims of a genocide that makes
  22. 1:33them may be particularly worthy objects
  23. 1:36of our attention
  24. 1:39the persecution
  25. 1:42concerns our own survival
  26. 2:01[Music]
  27. 2:13there is no more appropriate time for
  28. 2:15this conference on this very day
  29. 2:18Christians will be killed exiled finder
  30. 2:20property and houses of worship destroyed
  31. 2:23and faced humiliating discrimination in
  32. 2:25countries around the world
  33. 2:29the under Caesar sword project is an
  34. 2:32effort to study systematically and
  35. 2:36globally the kind of responses that
  36. 2:37Christian communities make towards
  37. 2:39persecution what do they do when they're
  38. 2:42under this kind of pressure and
  39. 2:44repression some people will say it's
  40. 2:46ethnic or religious cleansing not
  41. 2:48genocide these I think are quibbles the
  42. 2:52important thing is a massive
  43. 2:54humanitarian because tast Rafi is in
  44. 2:56front of us and it is inextricably
  45. 2:58related again to the religious identity
  46. 3:01of very vulnerable Christians
  47. 3:03the whole Middle East is without
  48. 3:07exception engulfed by a nightmare that
  49. 3:11seems to have no end and that undermine
  50. 3:15the very existence of
  51. 3:19Christians in many countries of the
  52. 3:23region
  53. 3:24[Music]
  54. 3:37[Music]
  55. 3:49the early church was comprised of five
  56. 3:52ancient patriarch aids Rome in the West
  57. 3:55and then four in the East Antioch
  58. 3:57Alexandria Jerusalem and Constantinople
  59. 4:00and those are all in danger of of
  60. 4:03disappearing they are literally living
  61. 4:06in an at-risk condition of great
  62. 4:08vulnerability a
  63. 4:11century ago
  64. 4:14one-third of the samel population was
  65. 4:16non-muslim which would mean Greeks first
  66. 4:19a Greek Orthodox then Armenians then
  67. 4:22Jews today it is less than 1% very tiny
  68. 4:27communities
  69. 4:29how did this happen while
  70. 4:31Turkey got rid of its Christian
  71. 4:34minorities to a great extent
  72. 4:36unfortunately by population exchanges by
  73. 4:40expelling them
  74. 4:47what we say in Turkish occupied Cyprus
  75. 4:50is really the erasure of the Christian
  76. 4:52presence churches demolished all of the
  77. 4:55iconography associated with the early
  78. 4:57church stripped out of these churches
  79. 4:59really a perverse effort to erase the
  80. 5:03historical footprints of the Christians
  81. 5:05of Turkey
  82. 5:15there has been a growing discourse in
  83. 5:19Turkey about the conversion of the great
  84. 5:22Church of the Holy wisdom of IES Sophia
  85. 5:25into a functioning mosque the largest
  86. 5:28Christian structure up until the
  87. 5:31Cathedral of Notre Dame was built and at
  88. 5:33that structures to function as a
  89. 5:35religious site it should function as a
  90. 5:38site for which it was built and intended
  91. 5:40a Christian site that is part of the
  92. 5:42ecumenical Patriarchate of
  93. 5:44Constantinople
  94. 5:49the state has to accelerate its reforms
  95. 5:53it used to be a very polyphonic country
  96. 5:56and then it could be again

  125. 7:42Christian communities have long focused
  126. 7:45on coping strategies in terms of making
  127. 7:48life livable on a daily basis and that
  128. 7:51has meant largely staying off the radar
  129. 7:55and by that I mean simply trying to do
  130. 7:57whatever is necessary in order to stay

  150. 9:05the non-muslim minorities we are
  151. 9:07reaching 200,000 people so why we have
  152. 9:11to be very vibrant and active it's very
  153. 9:14simple because we are part of this
  154. 9:16country we are the heritage of this
  155. 9:18history of this country
  156. 9:21we try to explain ourselves to dialogue
  157. 9:24with people because they don't know us
  158. 9:26if you see
  159. 9:28we can see that there are millions of
  160. 9:30millions of people in Turkey that they
  161. 9:32never experienced any connection and a
  162. 9:35dialogue with any non-muslim person and
  163. 9:38we try to explain again from the
  164. 9:39beginning that we are not foreigners
  165. 9:41that we are not strangers
  166. 9:44[Music]
  167. 9:48the blessing of the waters the epiphany
  168. 9:50as we call it it is a very special day
  169. 9:54and we came with all our bishops and our
  170. 9:57people and our parishes and all members
  171. 10:01of the larger community there were
  172. 10:02Turkish Muslims all Levi's Armenians
  173. 10:06we were happy because everything goes
  174. 10:10smoothly even if today Turkey and the
  175. 10:14countries around they are facing several
  176. 10:16problems we in a very secure way we have
  177. 10:20celebrated today
  178. 10:24definitely 15-20 years ago this could be
  179. 10:27impossible we still have a long way to
  180. 10:30go because we see what's happening in
  181. 10:33the Middle East first Iraq and on Syria
  182. 10:35and we have so millions of people
  183. 10:37refugees coming in Turkey of course it
  184. 10:40seems that doing it for the last
  185. 10:42centuries freedom for Christians is a
  186. 10:45limited understanding in the region

  188. 10:59[Music]
  189. 11:02in 1914 1922 in Turkey that Christians
  190. 11:0720% of were forced out and many of them
  191. 11:09fled to Syria and Iran and today they're
  192. 11:13being driven out of Syria Iraq and
  193. 11:15they're finding refuge in Turkey
  194. 11:17now so far the Turks have been
  195. 11:20extraordinarily accepting two million
  196. 11:24refugees
  197. 11:26when there is chaos in a country mostly
  198. 11:31composed of Islamic majority minorities
  199. 11:36especially Christians are very much
  200. 11:40vulnerable I
  201. 11:42decided to leave Iraq because there is

  228. 13:26it isn't everybody who has fled you do
  229. 13:31have incidence of the Assyrians for
  230. 13:33example round the table or River in
  231. 13:34Syria that took up arms have formed a
  232. 13:36militia but those are small responses
  233. 13:41one of the remarkable things that we
  234. 13:43found among Christian communities around
  235. 13:46the world is how few of them have
  236. 13:48resorted to violence as the answer we
  237. 13:51want to be careful not to judge
  238. 13:52communities who have made that difficult
  239. 13:54decision that may be armed the defense
  240. 13:57is the only way for them to survive but
  241. 13:59we do note that in the global profile
  242. 14:01armed violence is very rare
  243. 14:04Christians have spontaneously responded
  244. 14:07to their own suffering by enlarging
  245. 14:09their concern and compassion work for
  246. 14:12justice to include others as well it's
  247. 14:15important because that's what their
  248. 14:16faith calls them to but it's important
  249. 14:18to in that I think many Christians
  250. 14:21realize that the only world in which
  251. 14:24they're going to be more secure is the
  252. 14:25world in which everyone is more secure

  263. 15:12Tasi Shabazz was my younger brother he
  264. 15:16dedicated 28 years of his life to foster
  265. 15:20the ideal of human equality
  266. 15:22interfaith harmony and mutual love and
  267. 15:25forgiveness he died only a few meters in
  268. 15:29front of their home my mother heard the
  269. 15:32tender of bullets killing my brother
  270. 15:34even today it's impossible to imagine
  271. 15:37her pain but to my amazement my mom told
  272. 15:42me without hesitating that his mission
  273. 15:45should continue and I was the right
  274. 15:48person for this job she explained that
  275. 15:51she had forgiven the killers of my
  276. 15:53brother and she was free from a desire
  277. 15:56for the revenge of retaliation against
  278. 15:58them later she reminded me that Shabazz

  293. 16:57the Pew Forum reports that 76% of the
  294. 17:00world's population lives in a country
  295. 17:03where religious freedom is seriously
  296. 17:05curtail in India hundreds of Christians
  297. 17:08have been attacked by Hindu extremists
  298. 17:10whose violent efforts have been
  299. 17:12encouraged by the rise to power of a
  300. 17:14Hindu nationalist governments

  303. 17:37Christian's have been around in India
  304. 17:39from at least the third century there
  305. 17:41was a long period millennium or more of
  306. 17:45relatively peaceful coexistence between
  307. 17:47Christians and other religious people in
  308. 17:49India
  309. 17:55there was a huge embrace of Christians
  310. 17:58in this country the Christian
  311. 17:59missionaries and the schools they set up
  312. 18:01very commonly Christmas was practically
  313. 18:04no celebrated by all of India it's it's
  314. 18:07been a kind of secular practice almost a
  315. 18:10celebration you
  316. 18:13know the Western world generally have a
  317. 18:16notion of Hinduism and Buddhism as
  318. 18:18religions of peace yoga meditation sort
  319. 18:22of friendliness and
  320. 18:24this is a problem of perception
  321. 18:27in this that democracy is a
  322. 18:29constitutionally secure place the state
  323. 18:32is not supposed to be involved in
  324. 18:34religion in the big way but in reality
  325. 18:36the state has always been involved but
  326. 18:38clearly in favor of the ontology
  327. 18:42if you go in a police station you will
  328. 18:45find the pictures of gods and goddesses
  329. 18:47Garland and and so those spaces are very
  330. 18:50often marked out as at least quasi Hindu
  331. 18:53spaces and Christians maybe feel that
  332. 18:56they are not fully represented
  333. 18:58it has been a slow consistent process
  334. 19:02over decades what is happening now did
  335. 19:04not happen in one day it was a
  336. 19:06preparation of tens of years of a very
  337. 19:10slow poisoning of minds across India
  338. 19:14[Music]
  339. 19:16since about 1998 there's been a real
  340. 19:20rise in incidents of violence against
  341. 19:23Christians
  342. 19:27the condom all riots were really of a
  343. 19:30far more widespread and far more
  344. 19:35significant nature
  345. 19:37[Music]
  346. 19:41the crowd maybe about 300 to 400 people
  347. 19:45came in the morning and from this sport
  348. 19:48itself they started attacking the people
  349. 19:50breaking the houses and burning the
  350. 19:53houses and the violence continued
  351. 19:56all throughout the day set up a mall

  378. 21:45we are not attuned to we don't retaliate
  379. 21:47we don't respond as possibly other
  380. 21:50communities would do
  381. 21:54after things settled down a broader
  382. 21:58range of options became available to
  383. 22:00Christians and many of them began to
  384. 22:03very intentionally engage with their
  385. 22:06neighbors for the sake of
  386. 22:09bolstering or developing their social
  387. 22:12capital
  388. 22:13expanding their social networks I think
  389. 22:15they realized that they needed to reach
  390. 22:17out more effectively to other groups so
  391. 22:19they began doing visits you know they'd
  392. 22:22go to a Muslim service or festival
  393. 22:24they'd go to a Hindu service or festival
  394. 22:26they'd go to a Buddhist service fs1 and
  395. 22:28they would invite people from other
  396. 22:29religions into their own celebrations we
  397. 22:31began to counter the hate ideology and
  398. 22:34to do that we worked on modules we
  399. 22:38organized residential training camps in
  400. 22:40the last 12 years
  401. 22:43more than 15 20,000 young people have
  402. 22:46undergone those camps this is mainly
  403. 22:48fighting prejudices fighting hatred
  404. 22:52after the attack I was part of peace
  405. 22:56building process along with the district
  406. 22:59administration I went for peace building
  407. 23:02meetings in different villages
  408. 23:04in the youth program some of the sports
  409. 23:07computations we conducted brought the
  410. 23:09community people together from both the
  411. 23:11religion from both the costs and the
  412. 23:15biasness and the doubts that were there
  413. 23:18those also could be resolved in the
  414. 23:20meetings because the youth you are not
  415. 23:23able to talk the people you are not able
  416. 23:24to talk after the violence so this gave
  417. 23:28space to come together people slowly
  418. 23:30started talking one another building
  419. 23:33relationship
  420. 23:34they tried to make their own
  421. 23:37religious buildings more ecumenical and
  422. 23:40spirit more interfaith and spirit so
  423. 23:42instead of building something that could
  424. 23:43only be a church they might build a
  425. 23:44community center that had the symbols of
  426. 23:46various religions in it
  427. 23:50we are not understanding that the
  428. 23:54Christian community in India is part of
  429. 23:56a larger national groups we are
  430. 23:59protected by the Constitution we are
  431. 24:01protected by the United Nations Charter
  432. 24:03India is a signatory therefore there is
  433. 24:05no harm in fact we're duty-bound to seek
  434. 24:09support from everywhere to raise a voice
  435. 24:11everyone
  436. 24:18[Music]
  437. 24:23my overwhelming feeling now having heard
  438. 24:26the stories that we heard having met
  439. 24:28many of the really most remarkable
  440. 24:31Christian leaders who face persecution
  441. 24:33around the world is not one a
  442. 24:34discouragement
  443. 24:37our diversity and pluralism are
  444. 24:41decades of struggle for a democratic
  445. 24:45secular India is waking up again
  446. 24:49everyone will fight till till the last
  447. 24:52breath
  448. 24:55busy articulation to make your neck as
  449. 24:58like and alluring than a candy wattle
  450. 25:01master number or a cure malaria a
  451. 25:03similar a big Aramco sure
  452. 25:07we have to work
  453. 25:09to create a bridge and this bridge I
  454. 25:13mean cannot be built only from one side
  455. 25:16we have to work both sides and to create
  456. 25:19a bridge of confidence
  457. 25:23people are very different religions and
  458. 25:25ethnicities and national communities
  459. 25:28being able to live together in the same
  460. 25:30society that's critical to the dream of
  461. 25:33liberal democracy the dream of human
  462. 25:34rights
  463. 25:37it's very hard to see how you're going
  464. 25:39to get to a society where religious
  465. 25:42freedoms are
  466. 25:44central to the legal system but
  467. 25:47many people are beginning to see the
  468. 25:50merits and see that it's the only thing
  469. 25:52that's going to keep the societies they
  470. 25:54love from being swept away
  471. 25:58my overwhelming feeling despite
  472. 26:01challenges is that one can have hope and
  473. 26:04that things things can't improve and
  474. 26:07that
  475. 26:08integrity that faithfulness in the long
  476. 26:12run matter more than anything else
  477. 26:18[Music]
