- 0:00Hey, hey, hey English learners. Welcome
- 0:02back to the Daily English podcast. This
- 0:05is the place where you can learn real
- 0:07English, everyday English, and the kind
- 0:10of English you can actually use in real
- 0:13life.
- 0:14>> Yes. Welcome back, everyone. We're
- 0:16really happy you're here with us today.
- 0:18This is where we have natural
- 0:20conversations, share real stories, and
- 0:23help you feel more comfortable speaking
- 0:25English. I'm Tom.
- 0:27>> And I'm Emma. together. We're your two
- 0:29English friends. No big red pen, no
- 0:32boring classroom, and definitely no
- 0:35complicated English. Today,
- 0:37>> just real conversation, useful
- 0:40expressions, and hopefully a few moments
- 0:42that make you smile.
- 0:44>> And today we're talking about something
- 0:46that sounds almost magical.
- 0:49>> Oh, I like the sound of that.
- 0:51>> The topic is do this to attract good
- 0:55things into your life.
- 0:57Okay, Emma, are we talking about magic?
- 1:00>> No magic.
- 1:01>> Crystals?
- 1:02>> No.
- 1:04>> Standing under the moon and asking the
- 1:06universe for a new car?
- 1:08>> Definitely not. [laughter]
- 1:11>> Although, if that worked, I would have a
- 1:13new car by tomorrow morning.
- 1:15>> Same.
- 1:16>> What we mean today is something much
- 1:18more practical. Good things often become
- 1:21easier to notice, create, and receive
- 1:25when you change the way you live.
- 1:27>> Exactly.
- 1:29>> So, we're not saying think about
- 1:31something and magically wait for it to
- 1:33appear.
- 1:34>> We're talking about becoming the kind of
- 1:36person who creates more opportunities
- 1:38for good things to happen.
- 1:40>> That sounds much more realistic
- 1:42>> and much more useful.
- 1:44>> So, where do we start?
- 1:46>> Let's start with something very simple.
- 1:48I'm listening.
- 1:49>> Pay attention to what you bring into
- 1:51your life every day.
- 1:52>> H
- 1:53>> your conversations,
- 1:55>> your habits,
- 1:56>> your environment,
- 1:58>> the people you spend time with,
- 2:00>> the things you watch,
- 2:01>> the things you listen to,
- 2:03>> and even the way you talk to yourself.
- 2:06>> That last one is huge.
- 2:08>> It really is
- 2:09>> because sometimes we say, "I want more
- 2:12peace in my life." But we spend 3 hours
- 2:15every night watching arguments online.
- 2:18>> [laughter]
- 2:18>> Then we say, "Why am I stressed?"
- 2:21>> Exactly.
- 2:23>> It's like drinking five cups of coffee
- 2:25and asking why your heart is having a
- 2:27meeting. [laughter]
- 2:28Your daily environment matters
- 2:31>> a lot. Think about your life like a
- 2:34room.
- 2:35>> Okay?
- 2:36>> If you keep filling the room with noise,
- 2:38stress, negativity, and unnecessary
- 2:41problems, eventually there isn't much
- 2:44space left for peace. That makes sense.
- 2:47>> So sometimes attracting good things
- 2:49starts with making space.
- 2:52>> Making space.
- 2:53>> Yes. Space in your schedule,
- 2:56>> space in your mind,
- 2:58>> space in your home,
- 2:59>> and sometimes space in your
- 3:01relationships.
- 3:02>> Exactly.
- 3:03>> Let's talk about the first thing people
- 3:05can actually do.
- 3:07>> Appreciate what is already good.
- 3:10>> Gratitude.
- 3:11>> Yes. But I want to make this practical.
- 3:14>> Good. Gratitude doesn't mean pretending
- 3:17your life is perfect.
- 3:18>> That's important.
- 3:19>> If you're having a difficult day, you
- 3:21don't have to stand in front of the
- 3:22mirror and say, "Everything is amazing."
- 3:26[laughter]
- 3:27>> When you clearly don't feel that way.
- 3:29>> That would feel strange.
- 3:30>> Very strange.
- 3:31>> I lost my job today, but everything is
- 3:33amazing.
- 3:35[laughter]
- 3:36>> No.
- 3:36>> Real gratitude is quieter.
- 3:39>> Give us an example. You can say, "Today
- 3:41was difficult, but I had someone who
- 3:44listened to me."
- 3:45>> Nice.
- 3:46>> Or, "I'm worried about the future, but
- 3:48I'm grateful I have another day to try."
- 3:51>> That feels much more honest.
- 3:53>> Exactly.
- 3:54>> So, gratitude isn't ignoring the bad.
- 3:57>> It's noticing the good that still exists
- 4:00beside the bad.
- 4:01>> That's a beautiful way to explain it.
- 4:03>> And you can practice this every night.
- 4:06>> How?
- 4:06>> Ask yourself three simple questions.
- 4:09Okay.
- 4:10>> What went well today?
- 4:11>> Good.
- 4:12>> Who made me smile today?
- 4:14>> Nice.
- 4:15>> And what is one small thing I'm grateful
- 4:18for?
- 4:18>> That sounds easy.
- 4:20>> It is.
- 4:20>> But sometimes people think simple things
- 4:22don't work.
- 4:24>> Exactly.
- 4:24>> They want a giant life-changing system.
- 4:27>> They want 12 steps, three notebooks, a
- 4:30special morning routine, and probably a
- 4:32motivational playlist.
- 4:35>> Sometimes you just need five quiet
- 4:37minutes. That's true.
- 4:39>> Now, here's something else.
- 4:41>> What?
- 4:41>> Become more open to people.
- 4:43>> Explain that.
- 4:45>> Sometimes good things enter our lives
- 4:47through other people.
- 4:48>> A friend,
- 4:49>> a co-orker,
- 4:50>> a teacher,
- 4:51>> a neighbor,
- 4:52>> even a stranger.
- 4:53>> Exactly.
- 4:54>> But if you never talk to anyone, how can
- 4:56you create those opportunities?
- 4:58>> You can't.
- 4:59>> That's true.
- 5:00>> Imagine you're sitting in a coffee shop.
- 5:02>> Okay.
- 5:03>> Someone sits next to you
- 5:05>> and I immediately put my headphones on.
- 5:07>> [laughter]
- 5:08>> That sounds like me.
- 5:09>> Exactly. Please do not talk to me.
- 5:12[laughter]
- 5:13>> But seriously, sometimes we close
- 5:15ourselves off because we're afraid of
- 5:17awkward moments.
- 5:18>> And sometimes that's understandable,
- 5:20>> of course.
- 5:21>> But not every conversation needs to
- 5:23become a friendship,
- 5:24>> right?
- 5:25>> You can simply say hello,
- 5:28>> ask a question,
- 5:29>> smile,
- 5:30>> make a little conversation,
- 5:32>> and move on. You never know what one
- 5:35small conversation might lead to.
- 5:38>> Exactly.
- 5:39>> That's an important phrase for English
- 5:40learners, too.
- 5:42>> You never know.
- 5:43>> It means something is unertain and
- 5:46something unexpected might happen.
- 5:48>> For example, you never know who you
- 5:50might meet.
- 5:51>> Or you never know what opportunity might
- 5:54come next.
- 5:55>> Very useful.
- 5:57>> Let's practice it. You never know.
- 6:00>> Again, you never know. Good.
- 6:03>> Now, let's talk about your environment.
- 6:06>> This one is interesting.
- 6:08>> Look around your home
- 6:10>> right now. Imagine we're there.
- 6:13>> Okay.
- 6:14>> What do you see?
- 6:15>> My desk.
- 6:16>> Is it clean?
- 6:18>> Next question. [laughter]
- 6:22I knew you were going there.
- 6:24>> I'm just asking.
- 6:26>> My desk is creatively organized. That's
- 6:30a beautiful way to say messy.
- 6:33>> Thank you.
- 6:34>> You're welcome. [laughter]
- 6:37>> But seriously, your physical environment
- 6:39can affect how you feel.
- 6:42>> Definitely.
- 6:43>> You don't need an expensive house.
- 6:46>> You don't need perfect furniture.
- 6:48>> You don't need a giant makeover.
- 6:50>> Just make your space easier to live in.
- 6:53>> Put things back where they belong.
- 6:56>> Open the curtains.
- 6:58>> Let some light in. Make your bed,
- 7:01>> clean your desk,
- 7:02>> put away things you don't use.
- 7:05>> Small changes,
- 7:06>> but they can change the feeling of a
- 7:08room.
- 7:09>> And sometimes changing your environment
- 7:12gives your mind a fresh start.
- 7:14>> That's true.
- 7:15>> I remember one time I was feeling
- 7:18completely stuck.
- 7:19>> What happened?
- 7:20>> Nothing terrible. I just felt like I was
- 7:23doing the same things every day.
- 7:26>> And you were bored? A little.
- 7:29>> What did you do?
- 7:30>> I cleaned my room.
- 7:32>> That's it.
- 7:33>> That's it. [laughter]
- 7:35>> I know it sounds ridiculous
- 7:38>> a little.
- 7:39>> But when I finished, I opened the
- 7:41window, changed the sheets, cleaned my
- 7:43desk, and moved a few things around.
- 7:46>> And
- 7:47>> the room felt different.
- 7:49>> And you felt different
- 7:51>> a little.
- 7:52>> That actually makes sense. Sometimes you
- 7:54need a physical change to remind your
- 7:57brain that change is possible.
- 7:59>> I like that
- 8:00>> you don't always need to change your
- 8:02entire life.
- 8:04>> Sometimes you can start with your desk.
- 8:06>> Exactly.
- 8:08>> Now, another big one. Your words.
- 8:11>> Yes.
- 8:12>> The way you speak to yourself matters
- 8:15>> a lot.
- 8:16>> Imagine making one small mistake.
- 8:19>> Okay. and you immediately say, "I'm
- 8:22terrible at everything."
- 8:24>> That's harsh,
- 8:26>> but people do it
- 8:27>> all the time.
- 8:29>> Now, imagine saying, "That didn't go
- 8:31well, but I can learn from it."
- 8:34>> Much better.
- 8:35>> The situation is the same,
- 8:37>> but your response is different.
- 8:40>> Exactly.
- 8:41>> You don't need fake positivity. You need
- 8:44useful thinking.
- 8:46>> That's a big difference.
- 8:48Instead of saying I can do anything when
- 8:50you don't believe it, say I can take the
- 8:54next step.
- 8:55>> Exactly.
- 8:56>> That feels believable.
- 8:58>> And believable thoughts are easier to
- 9:00act on.
- 9:01>> So here's an expression for today. I can
- 9:04work with this.
- 9:06>> What does that mean?
- 9:07>> It means this situation may not be
- 9:10perfect, but I can still do something.
- 9:13>> I like that. For example, maybe you
- 9:16don't have much money right now.
- 9:18>> You can say, "I don't have everything I
- 9:20want yet, but I can work with what I
- 9:22have."
- 9:23>> Exactly. Maybe your English isn't fluent
- 9:26yet. My English isn't perfect, but I can
- 9:29work with what I know.
- 9:31>> Very useful.
- 9:32>> And maybe you're starting something new.
- 9:34>> I don't know everything yet, but I can
- 9:37work with what I have. That mindset is
- 9:40powerful
- 9:41>> because you stop waiting to become
- 9:43perfect.
- 9:44>> Exactly.
- 9:45>> Now, let's talk about action.
- 9:47>> Good.
- 9:47>> Because thinking about good things is
- 9:49nice.
- 9:50>> But action creates opportunities.
- 9:53>> Exactly.
- 9:54>> Let's say someone wants a better job.
- 9:56>> Okay.
- 9:57>> They spend 6 months saying, "I want a
- 9:59better job."
- 10:00>> But they never update their resume,
- 10:02>> never apply,
- 10:03>> never learn anything new,
- 10:05>> never talk to anyone in their field.
- 10:07Then they ask, "Why hasn't anything
- 10:09changed?"
- 10:10>> Exactly.
- 10:11>> Good opportunities usually need
- 10:13somewhere to enter.
- 10:15>> That's a great way to think about it.
- 10:17>> You have to open the door.
- 10:19>> Maybe not every opportunity will walk
- 10:21through,
- 10:22>> but if the door is always locked,
- 10:24>> nothing can come in.
- 10:25>> Exactly.
- 10:26>> So, if you want something new, create a
- 10:29little movement. Send one email,
- 10:32>> make one call,
- 10:33>> apply for one job,
- 10:35>> learn one skill,
- 10:36>> talk to one person,
- 10:38>> read one useful article,
- 10:40>> take one class,
- 10:41>> one step,
- 10:42>> then another.
- 10:44>> That's how things start changing.
- 10:46>> And sometimes the first step feels
- 10:48completely unimportant
- 10:49>> until you look back.
- 10:51>> Exactly.
- 10:52>> Maybe that email creates a conversation.
- 10:55>> The conversation creates a meeting.
- 10:57>> The meeting creates an opportunity. And
- 11:00the opportunity changes something in
- 11:02your life.
- 11:02>> You never know.
- 11:04>> Exactly.
- 11:05>> That's why small actions matter.
- 11:08>> Now we should talk about people who
- 11:09constantly bring negativity into your
- 11:11life.
- 11:12>> That can be difficult.
- 11:14>> Very.
- 11:15>> You don't have to hate them.
- 11:16>> You don't have to fight them,
- 11:18>> but you can choose how much access they
- 11:20have to you.
- 11:21>> That's a good point. If someone spends
- 11:24every conversation complaining
- 11:26>> and criticizing everyone
- 11:28>> and creating trauma
- 11:30>> and then you feel exhausted after every
- 11:32conversation,
- 11:33>> pay attention.
- 11:35>> Your body may be telling you something.
- 11:37>> Maybe you need a little distance.
- 11:39>> Not every relationship needs to end
- 11:41dramatically.
- 11:42>> Exactly.
- 11:43>> Sometimes you simply need healthier
- 11:45boundaries.
- 11:46>> You can talk less.
- 11:48>> You can stop sharing every detail. You
- 11:50can choose different topics
- 11:52>> or simply say, "I can't talk about this
- 11:55right now."
- 11:55>> That's natural English, too.
- 11:57>> I can't talk about this right now.
- 11:59>> Or, I need to focus on something else.
- 12:02>> Very useful.
- 12:03>> Remember, protecting your peace is not
- 12:06being rude.
- 12:07>> It's taking responsibility for your
- 12:09energy.
- 12:10>> Exactly.
- 12:11>> And speaking of energy,
- 12:12>> here comes another important one.
- 12:14>> Sleep.
- 12:15>> Yes. We cannot talk about attracting
- 12:18good things while ignoring basic health.
- 12:21>> Exactly.
- 12:22>> Sometimes the most positive thing you
- 12:24can do is go to bed,
- 12:27not buy a new planner,
- 12:29not watch another motivational video,
- 12:32just sleep.
- 12:34>> Sometimes your problem is not your
- 12:36mindset.
- 12:37>> You're just tired.
- 12:38>> Exactly.
- 12:40>> That is a very underrated life lesson.
- 12:42>> Get some sleep before making huge
- 12:45decisions. Absolutely.
- 12:47>> Because everything feels worse at 2 in
- 12:49the morning,
- 12:50>> especially your life
- 12:51>> and especially your future.
- 12:53>> At 2 in the morning, I've personally
- 12:55questioned every decision I've made
- 12:57since childhood.
- 12:59[laughter] Then I wake up and I'm fine.
- 13:02>> That's why sleep matters.
- 13:03>> Now, another way to attract better
- 13:05things is to become more curious.
- 13:08>> I love that. Ask questions.
- 13:10>> Learn.
- 13:11>> Try something new.
- 13:12>> Visit somewhere different.
- 13:14>> Read about something you don't
- 13:15understand.
- 13:16>> Talk to someone outside your normal
- 13:19circle.
- 13:19>> Curiosity creates possibilities.
- 13:22>> Exactly.
- 13:23>> If you always do exactly the same thing,
- 13:26>> you'll probably keep getting similar
- 13:28results.
- 13:29>> So, change one thing.
- 13:31>> Try a new route.
- 13:32>> Learn a new skill.
- 13:34>> Join a class.
- 13:35>> Start a conversation. Say yes to
- 13:37something healthy and useful
- 13:39>> and sometimes say no to something that
- 13:42drains you.
- 13:43>> Balance.
- 13:44>> Exactly.
- 13:45>> Now, let's talk about kindness.
- 13:47>> Good one.
- 13:48>> If you want more good things in your
- 13:50life, become someone who gives good
- 13:52things, too.
- 13:53>> That's important.
- 13:54>> Smile at someone.
- 13:56>> Thank someone.
- 13:57>> Help someone.
- 13:58>> Give a genuine compliment.
- 14:00>> Send a message to a friend.
- 14:02>> Ask someone how they're doing. and
- 14:04actually listen to the answer.
- 14:07>> That last one is rare.
- 14:08>> Very rare.
- 14:10>> People ask, "How are you?"
- 14:11>> And before you answer, they're already
- 14:13talking about themselves.
- 14:16>> We can do better.
- 14:17>> We can.
- 14:17>> Kindness creates connection.
- 14:20>> And connection can create opportunities,
- 14:22friendships, support, and trust.
- 14:25>> Exactly. But kindness doesn't mean
- 14:28becoming everyone's personal assistant.
- 14:31>> Important distinction. very important.
- 14:34>> Help people when you can,
- 14:36>> but don't destroy yourself trying to
- 14:38save everyone.
- 14:39>> That's another way of choosing yourself.
- 14:42>> Now, I want to give everyone listening a
- 14:44small challenge.
- 14:46>> I like challenges.
- 14:47>> Today, do three things.
- 14:50>> Okay.
- 14:51>> First, clean one small area of your
- 14:54home.
- 14:55>> Easy.
- 14:55>> Second, send one positive message to
- 14:58someone.
- 14:59>> Nice. Third, take one small action
- 15:03towards something you want.
- 15:05>> That could be anything.
- 15:06>> Exactly.
- 15:07>> Apply for something.
- 15:09>> Practice English,
- 15:10>> exercise,
- 15:11>> read,
- 15:12>> make a phone call,
- 15:14>> start a project,
- 15:15>> organize something,
- 15:16>> whatever matters to you.
- 15:18>> And then tonight, ask yourself one
- 15:20question.
- 15:21>> What good thing did I create today?
- 15:24>> I love that question. Because sometimes
- 15:27we wait for good things to happen
- 15:29>> instead of becoming part of making them
- 15:31happen.
- 15:32>> Exactly.
- 15:33>> You can create a good moment.
- 15:35>> You can create a better conversation.
- 15:38>> You can create a cleaner space.
- 15:40>> You can create a healthier habit.
- 15:42>> You can create an opportunity.
- 15:44>> You can create a better day.
- 15:46>> And sometimes a better day becomes a
- 15:48better week.
- 15:49>> A better week becomes a better month.
- 15:52>> And slowly your life starts feeling
- 15:54different. Not because of magic,
- 15:57>> because of repeated choices.
- 15:59>> That's the real secret.
- 16:00>> And honestly, I think that's more
- 16:02powerful than magic.
- 16:04>> I agree.
- 16:05>> Because it means you have some control.
- 16:07>> Exactly.
- 16:08>> You may not control everything that
- 16:10happens,
- 16:11>> but you can control what you do next.
- 16:13>> You can choose what you focus on.
- 16:16>> You can choose who you spend time with.
- 16:18>> You can choose what you practice.
- 16:20>> You can choose what you allow into your
- 16:22mind. You can choose what you give your
- 16:25energy to
- 16:26>> and those choices add up.
- 16:28>> So maybe the question isn't how can I
- 16:31attract good things.
- 16:33>> Maybe the better question is
- 16:35>> what kind of life am I creating?
- 16:37>> Exactly.
- 16:38>> Because your habits are creating
- 16:40something every day.
- 16:42>> Your conversations are creating
- 16:43something.
- 16:44>> Your environment is creating something.
- 16:47>> Your choices are creating something.
- 16:49>> Even your small decisions matter. So,
- 16:51make them count.
- 16:53>> Not perfectly, just intentionally.
- 16:56>> That's the word. Intentionally.
- 16:58>> Do things on purpose.
- 17:00>> Spend time with people who make you feel
- 17:02respected.
- 17:03>> Learn things that make you stronger.
- 17:06>> Take care of your body.
- 17:07>> Protect your peace.
- 17:09>> Stay curious.
- 17:10>> Be kind.
- 17:12>> Take action.
- 17:13>> And give yourself another chance when
- 17:15you mess up
- 17:16>> because you will mess up.
- 17:18>> Everyone does.
- 17:19>> You're human. Congratulations.
- 17:23>> Welcome to the club.
- 17:24>> There are billions of members.
- 17:26>> No membership fee.
- 17:27>> Unfortunately, no free coffee either.
- 17:30[laughter]
- 17:31>> But we get another day and another
- 17:34chance. That's something worth
- 17:36appreciating.
- 17:38>> So before we finish, let's repeat a few
- 17:40expressions from today.
- 17:42>> You never know.
- 17:43>> I can work with this.
- 17:45>> I'll take it one step at a time.
- 17:48>> I need some space. I'm focusing on what
- 17:51I can control
- 17:52>> and I'm going to take care of it today.
- 17:55>> These are simple expressions,
- 17:57>> but they're useful in real life.
- 17:59>> And that's what we want for you.
- 18:02>> Not just English you understand,
- 18:04>> English you actually use,
- 18:07>> in conversations,
- 18:08>> at work,
- 18:09>> with friends,
- 18:10>> with family,
- 18:11>> and in your everyday life.
- 18:13>> So, English learners, here's your final
- 18:16question. What is one good thing you
- 18:19want to bring into your life?
- 18:21>> More peace,
- 18:22>> better health,
- 18:23>> better friendships,
- 18:25>> more confidence,
- 18:26>> a new job,
- 18:27>> better English,
- 18:28>> more time.
- 18:30>> Whatever it is, don't only think about
- 18:32it.
- 18:33>> Ask yourself what small action can move
- 18:36you toward it.
- 18:37>> Then take that action
- 18:39>> today.
- 18:40>> Not someday,
- 18:41>> not next month,
- 18:43>> not when everything is perfect,
- 18:45>> today. Because sometimes the good thing
- 18:47you're waiting for
- 18:49>> starts with the small thing you decide
- 18:52to do.
- 18:53>> That's a great place to finish.
- 18:55>> I think so too.
- 18:56>> Thank you so much for spending this time
- 18:58with us today.
- 18:59>> And thank you for being part of the
- 19:01Daily English podcast family.

- 19:05forget to like the episode.

- 19:11conversations. And remember,
- 19:14>> make space for good things,
- 19:16>> take small actions,
- 19:18>> protect your peace,
- 19:20>> stay open,
- 19:21>> be kind,
- 19:22>> and keep moving forward.
- 19:24>> You never know what good thing might be
- 19:27waiting around the corner.
- 19:28>> And if nothing is waiting around the
- 19:30corner,
- 19:31>> Tom,
- 19:32>> what?
- 19:32>> Go create something good.
- 19:35>> Fair enough. [laughter]
- 19:38>> See you in the next episode.
- 19:39>> Take care, everyone. Bye.
- 19:41>> Bye.
