Do I Have Enough Faith? (Review of D.A. Carson) | Theocast — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01Today's an episode where I get a little
- 0:03worked up because we're talking about
- 0:05the sufficiency of Christ.
- 0:07And it matters to me. So many people are
- 0:10told to put their faith in their faith
- 0:12or put their faith in their
- 0:12faithfulness. We don't even know what
- 0:13faith is. The object of our faith is our
- 0:15faith or the object of our faith is our
- 0:17faithfulness.
- 0:18And so I play a clip from D.A. Carson
- 0:20that will bring you to tears. It's
- 0:22wonderful. It's a It's an explanation of
- 0:25the gospel of what it really means that
- 0:27Jesus is the object of our faith.
- 0:30I I hope this encourages you in the way
- 0:31in which it does to me. Stay tuned.
- 0:35Ever read the Bible and walk away
- 0:37feeling like you're failing? No matter
- 0:38how hard you try, you're never measuring
- 0:41up. That's not a motivation problem.
- 0:43That's a reading problem. Most people
- 0:45have never been taught how to read the
- 0:46Bible the way Jesus taught it. So when
- 0:49they hear things like be perfect, deny
- 0:51yourself, take up your cross, they
- 0:53assume it's all about trying harder. But
- 0:56what if that's not what Jesus was doing
- 0:58at all? What if the law isn't meant to
- 1:00fix you, but to reveal your need for a
- 1:02savior? And what if the gospel isn't
- 1:04advice, but an announcement of what
- 1:07Christ has already done for you? That's
- 1:09the difference between law and gospel.
- 1:12And once you see it, everything changes.
- 1:14Clarity, [music] rest, and confidence.
- 1:16In The Bible According to Jesus, I show
- 1:18you how to read scripture the way Jesus
- 1:21intended so you stop feeling crushed and
- 1:23confused and start living with
- 1:25confidence and rest in Christ. [music]
- 1:27You can get your copy of the book at

- 1:47episode of Theocast. I'm Jon Moffitt.

- 1:51in Spring Hill, Tennessee. And today I'm
- 1:54excited. Why? Because we're going to
- 1:55talk about Jesus again. We're going to
- 1:57talk about the hope of Christ. We're
- 1:59going to pull the clutter off the
- 2:00gospel. We're going to talk about the
- 2:01power of Christ in all of scripture for
- 2:04all of your life. It's a wonder and I
- 2:07love it. I'm glad that you're here and I
- 2:09hope you're encouraged. If this is your
- 2:11first time listening, you can go to
- 2:12theocast.org. We have a lot of resources
- 2:14there. Uh episodes, videos, classes,
- 2:17community, books.

- 2:35uh
- 2:35reach out to us. We'll get them to you
- 2:37for free. We've given away thousands of
- 2:39books. Um I think Rest we've I don't
- 2:41know, man. It's pretty close to
- 2:4314 or 15,000 books that we've given
- 2:45away. It it's um it's a joy to know that
- 2:48that many people have read the book. So,
- 2:51um
- 2:52the most recent book that we have
- 2:53available is The Bible According to
- 2:54Jesus. If you want to know how Rest
- 2:56looks like across all of scripture,
- 2:59that's what this book is. Six tools to
- 3:00know how to trust in Christ. Uh learn
- 3:03about Jesus in all of scripture from
- 3:05Logos to distinction to covenant
- 3:06theology. This is not an academic book.
- 3:08So, if you're new to reformed theology
- 3:10or um
- 3:12you you don't feel like, "Man, I don't
- 3:13not very good at reading academic
- 3:15books." This is not That's not what this
- 3:17book is. So,
- 3:18uh paperback, Kindle, it's going to be
- 3:20an audiobook pretty soon. So,
- 3:23let me jump into this. Um
- 3:25I've been doing a lot of critique videos
- 3:27and I wanted to show you a video that
- 3:29just is so amazing.
- 3:31Beautiful representation of the gospel.
- 3:33D. A. Carson is just a sweet man.
- 3:36Um you know, the Lord has used him in so
- 3:39many ways. I got to meet him years and
- 3:41years ago. He and I sat next to each
- 3:43other at a dinner and my wife was just
- 3:46taken back by just how kind he was.
- 3:48Uh just the embodiment of a man humbled
- 3:51by Christ and could talk about the
- 3:53wonders and the glory of Jesus. And this
- 3:55is a great example of that. When you get
- 3:57pray for him, I know he's no longer in
- 3:59ministry, he's struggling with his
- 4:01health. But man, this clip is probably
- 4:04one of my favorite clips just when
- 4:06thinking about the sufficiency of who
- 4:08Christ is for us.
- 4:10Um before
- 4:12uh well, I'm going to play it. I just
- 4:13I'm going to play it and let you hear it
- 4:14and then we're going to comment about it
- 4:15because what he's saying is so
- 4:16important. It's so important for the
- 4:19believer to understand especially those
- 4:21If you're listening to this and you
- 4:23struggle with like, do I have enough
- 4:24faith or
- 4:26my faith is really weak or how could God
- 4:28save one someone like me who I struggle
- 4:30so much? This is for you. So, let's
- 4:33listen to this. I wanted to point out
- 4:35something good and then let's comment
- 4:37about it.
- 4:39Picture two Jews
- 4:42by the name of
- 4:44Smith and Brown, remarkably Jewish
- 4:46names.
- 4:51The day before the first Passover
- 4:54having a little discussion in the land
- 4:56of Goshen.
- 4:59And Smith says to Brown
- 5:02boy, are you a little nervous about
- 5:03what's going to happen tonight?
- 5:06Brown says
- 5:08well
- 5:11God told us what to do through his
- 5:12servant Moses. You don't have to be
- 5:13nervous.
- 5:15Haven't you slaughtered the the lamb and
- 5:17daubed the two door posts with blood,
- 5:19put blood on the lintel? Haven't you you
- 5:21done that? You're all ready and packed
- 5:22to go. You're going to eat the the whole
- 5:24Passover meal with your family.
- 5:27Of course I've done that. I'm not
- 5:29stupid.
- 5:31But
- 5:32it's still pretty scary when you think
- 5:33of all the things that have happened
- 5:34around here recently, you know, flies
- 5:36and river turning to blood and
- 5:39it's pretty awful.
- 5:41And and and now there's a threat of the
- 5:43firstborn being killed, you know? It's
- 5:46all right for you, you got three sons,
- 5:47I've only got one. And I love my Charlie
- 5:50and and and and and the angel of death
- 5:52is passing through tonight. Do you you
- 5:54know? I I know what what God says. I've
- 5:56put the blood there, but but it's pretty
- 5:58scary. I'll be glad when this night is
- 5:59over.
- 6:03And the other one responds, "Bring it
- 6:05on. I trust the promises of God."
- 6:09That night the angel of death swept
- 6:12through the land.
- 6:14Which one lost his son?
- 6:21And the answer, of course, is
- 6:24neither. Mhm.
- 6:29Because death doesn't pass over them
- 6:32on the ground of the intensity or the
- 6:36clarity of the faith exercised.
- 6:40But on the ground of the blood of the
- 6:44lamb. That's what silences the accuser.
- 6:48>> [applause]
- 6:49>> Yeah, amen.
- 6:51The blood silences the accuser of the
- 6:54brothers as he accuses us before God.
- 6:58He silences
- 6:59our consciences when he accuses us
- 7:02directly.
- 7:04How many times do we writhe in agony
- 7:07asking if God can ever love us enough,
- 7:10if God can ever care for us enough after
- 7:12we've done such stupid, sinful,
- 7:14rebellious things after being Christians
- 7:16for 40 years? Come on, man. What are you
- 7:19going to say? What are you going to say?
- 7:19God, I I tried hard, you know? I did I
- 7:21did my best. It was a it was a bad
- 7:23moment.
- 7:25No. No. No. No.
- 7:27I have no other argument. I need no
- 7:29other plea. IT IS ENOUGH that Jesus died
- 7:32and that he died for me. Yes.
- 7:34We overcome him by the blood of the
- 7:36lamb. There is the ground of all human
- 7:39assurance before God. There is the
- 7:41ground of our faith, not guaranteeing
- 7:45intensity of faith, so fickle are we.
- 7:48Mhm. It's not [clears throat] the
- 7:49intensity of our faith, but the object
- 7:51of our faith that saves. They overcome
- 7:53him on the ground of the blood of the
- 7:56lamb.
- 7:57Amen. God be praised. Man, so good.
- 8:00So good, man.
- 8:02I It's been a while since I listened to
- 8:04the whole clip. I purposely didn't want
- 8:05to hear it. I wanted to hear it fresh
- 8:07and new, and man, it still hits
- 8:10to this day.
- 8:11Um
- 8:13Sometimes you wonder like what what
- 8:15should I listen to that can encourage
- 8:17me? That would be That would be a clip
- 8:19that you want to
- 8:20you'd want to put in there for
- 8:21encouragement.
- 8:23All right, let's um
- 8:25let's unpack this because
- 8:27this is so vitally important for so many
- 8:31Christians. This is the thing thing I've
- 8:33been trying to address for so many
- 8:35years, uh specifically recently,
- 8:39about this type of preaching that robs
- 8:42the believer of their hope because of
- 8:45the intensity of their obedience or
- 8:48their faith.
- 8:49Um man, what he says there is just
- 8:53biblical truth that has been pounded by
- 8:57the reformers and needs to be reclaimed
- 9:00today. Like this doctrine is the
- 9:03essential doctrine that we have to have,
- 9:05otherwise we have nothing. So,
- 9:08um I'm going to try not to get super
- 9:10intense here.
- 9:12So, let's break down this illustration.
- 9:14The point of it was is that the doorpost
- 9:18covered by the blood is what the death
- 9:21angel passed over, okay?
- 9:24So, what did he see? He saw the blood
- 9:27and said, "This house is covered." And
- 9:30passed over.
- 9:31And I love the illustration because you
- 9:33got one guy who's like, "I'm not worried
- 9:35at all, man. This is awesome. This is
- 9:36going on." And you have another guy is
- 9:38like, "Have you seen what's going on
- 9:39around here? And this is crazy."
- 9:41I mean, we've got we got all kinds of
- 9:43wild stuff. Seen the plagues and people,
- 9:46you know, dying and I don't know, man.
- 9:48This is um this is a little strange.
- 9:51And he asked him a very important
- 9:53question. He was like, "Yeah, but you
- 9:53put the blood over the door, right?"
- 9:54He's like, "Well, yeah. I mean, I did
- 9:56that, but I mean, this is still like
- 9:58this is hard. This is I'm worried, you
- 10:00know. I don't know."
- 10:02And then
- 10:03I love that moment where he pauses and
- 10:05he just says,
- 10:07"And which son died?"
- 10:11Neither.
- 10:12Neither of them.
- 10:14Because the requirement was met.
- 10:16And that is when he says the object of
- 10:19our faith is what saves us, not the
- 10:22intensity of our faith in the object.
- 10:25This is so important. Uh I have used
- 10:27this illustration for so many times, but
- 10:30whether it's a roller coaster ride or um
- 10:32airplane, if you've ever sat next to
- 10:34somebody and they just don't have faith
- 10:36in the object like you do. Like I love
- 10:38roller coasters. There's not really one
- 10:39that scares me. I I I'm not Well,
- 10:41carnivals, that's different, you know.
- 10:43That's not a roller coaster. That's a
- 10:44death trap. But
- 10:45>> [laughter]
- 10:45>> we're talking about like a professional,
- 10:47you know, like a place that's this is
- 10:49what they're known for. Um
- 10:51I have been in roller coasters where the
- 10:53person next to me thinks they're going
- 10:54to die and then I'm just like having a
- 10:58you know, having a having a blast.
- 11:00I put my faith in the object. They
- 11:02obviously put their faith in the object
- 11:04because they got on the ride, right? But
- 11:06their experience is different from mine.
- 11:07That's what he's describing. Is that
- 11:09sometimes our experiences doesn't always
- 11:12match the power of the object. And that
- 11:16doesn't mean there's something wrong
- 11:18with us.
- 11:19Because at the end of the day, did you
- 11:21put your faith in the object? Now, does
- 11:24it waver at times? Does it feel stronger
- 11:27in some moments and weaker than others?
- 11:30It's not based upon your performance.
- 11:33And I think it's so important
- 11:35that when Christ on the cross cried out,
- 11:38"It is finished." He cried that out
- 11:41letting you know that his shed blood
- 11:44that he poured out for you and his life
- 11:47which he lived for you was completed on
- 11:50the cross.
- 11:51And that's the object of your salvation.
- 11:54That is the source of your salvation.
- 11:56Now, how you trust it
- 11:59is going It doesn't uh determine
- 12:02how whether it saves you or not.
- 12:05Right? So, like the sometimes we think
- 12:07that we have to have perfect peace. Oh,
- 12:08sorry. Perfect faith.
- 12:10Perfect faith which means there's never
- 12:12a moment of doubt, there's never a
- 12:13moment of sin, there's never a moment of
- 12:15faulty or failure. And that's how one is
- 12:19saved. Well, then
- 12:20then you're involved in your salvation.
- 12:23You just are. You got a percentage of
- 12:25involvement. You have a reason to boast.
- 12:27I believed and I had perfect faith and
- 12:31you didn't. Well, no. That's That's the
- 12:34whole point of the illustration. The
- 12:35ground of our salvation, how we get
- 12:39saved is Jesus Christ. I think this is
- 12:41so important to understand. You are not
- 12:43saved by your faith
- 12:45and it's just as important to believe
- 12:47that you're not saved by your
- 12:48faithfulness.
- 12:50Man, I've I've been saying this for
- 12:52years and years and years, but you know,
- 12:54this is this is pietism and lordship
- 12:56salvation and this a constant uh
- 12:58legalism where we're emphasizing
- 13:00faithfulness.
- 13:01And I just did an episode with uh Fire
- 13:05uh critiquing Fire Mike's uh Fire Mike
- 13:07Smith where he's talking about Catholics
- 13:09believing in faith alone, sola fide, and
- 13:11then he gives his explanation and it's
- 13:12not. He says you're saved by your
- 13:14faithfulness. It's uh faith working
- 13:16itself out in love and if there is no
- 13:18love which is faithfulness, obedience,
- 13:19then there is no salvation. The object
- 13:22of your faith is not your
- 13:24king, it's not your savior. The object
- 13:27of your faith is your performance or
- 13:30it's your affection or it's your desire
- 13:33or it's your intensity.
- 13:36And I'm telling you the more that you
- 13:38look to Christ and understand he will
- 13:40hold you fast. He will never let you go.
- 13:43He will never be separated from you. How
- 13:45many times did Paul have to say it? When
- 13:47you were dead in your trespasses and
- 13:48sins, he came to you. When you were his
- 13:50enemy, he came to you. It's not
- 13:52transactional. There is nothing
- 13:55transactional about your relationship to
- 13:57God whatsoever.
- 14:00He laid his life down for you before you
- 14:03ever even knew about it. He laid his He
- 14:06came to earth and laid down his life for
- 14:08you.
- 14:09And now he is presenting himself as this
- 14:13savior to you in in so many ways all
- 14:17throughout scripture. The entire Bible
- 14:19is one big narrative teaching you that
- 14:21you can trust the sufficiency of the
- 14:23object of your salvation, Jesus Christ.
- 14:26And this is what needs to be preached.
- 14:27This is what needs to be taught to our
- 14:29children. This is what discipleship
- 14:31needs to be about, the sufficiency and
- 14:33the power of Jesus Christ. Instead, what
- 14:35are we emphasizing? Law and obedience
- 14:37and faithfulness. Those are important.
- 14:40They are the response to the gospel. But
- 14:42those who are free and those who are
- 14:44safe and those who are secure, they
- 14:47become the ones who are the loudest in
- 14:49obedience because why? Because they have
- 14:51nothing to fear.
- 14:54What is What does it say? Perfect love
- 14:56cast out fear. God's love for us,
- 15:00the way in which God loves us, which is
- 15:03unconditional, sacrificial, never
- 15:06ending,
- 15:07that love casts out this fear of like I
- 15:11don't know if I'm saved and it liberates
- 15:14us to go and lay our life down for
- 15:15Christ.
- 15:17You're not saved because you laid your
- 15:19life down for Christ. You're saved
- 15:20because Christ laid his life down for
- 15:22you.
- 15:24Now, go lay your life down.
- 15:27But, it has nothing to do with your
- 15:29salvation. We can never connect our
- 15:32actions to our salvation. It can't be
- 15:34the ground or the foundation. Now, it
- 15:36can be modes of encouragement, for sure.
- 15:41But, man, if you're going to examine
- 15:43something, if you're in the faith,
- 15:45there's only one way you're in the
- 15:46faith. It's if Jesus saved you.
- 15:50You know what it's even that whole
- 15:51section I did I've done a whole section
- 15:53on examining cuz people like, "Oh, Paul
- 15:55tells us to examine ourselves." Well,
- 15:56then go hear my episode on that and my
- 15:58critique of
- 16:00Philip Anthony Mitchell,
- 16:02who also does this, and Paul Washer. I
- 16:03did multiple So, just go to there's a
- 16:05whole the section on YouTube and our
- 16:07website on Lordship salvation. Just go
- 16:09there and look at that and you could
- 16:10watch those episodes. I deal with all
- 16:12examining's sections. It's
- 16:15It's not what you think it is. It's so
- 16:17sad that we turn these episodes or these
- 16:19um passages into that.
- 16:22Then he goes on
- 16:24and he and he really begins to emphasize
- 16:26towards the end of this video
- 16:28about it's
- 16:30it's so important that it's
- 16:35our emotional
- 16:37experience, our
- 16:40sense of dedication
- 16:42is not our hope of
- 16:45salvation.
- 16:48You will never be dedicated enough.
- 16:50You'll never be intense enough.
- 16:53You will never be faithful enough.
- 16:55You will never be enough. That's why I'm
- 16:57excited about this new book I have
- 16:58coming out called Enough for Christ.
- 17:00You'll never be enough.
- 17:03Because he's enough.
- 17:06And the weaker you become,
- 17:09the stronger he is.
- 17:13Because you stop you stop looking
- 17:14looking unto Jesus, the author of your
- 17:17faith. What?
- 17:19Not you the author of your faith?
- 17:21Not you the founder of your faith, and
- 17:23not you the perfecter of your faith.
- 17:25Looking unto Jesus, the author and
- 17:29perfecter, the founder and finisher.
- 17:32He starts it in you, and he So, listen,
- 17:35it's not like, "Hey, he gave you faith,
- 17:36don't lose it.
- 17:38Don't fumble it. Don't mess it up."
- 17:41And people are like, "I don't know if I
- 17:42have it. Are you Like, if if you ever I
- 17:45mean, let me let me just help someone
- 17:46here. If you ever say, "I don't know if
- 17:47I have faith in Jesus."
- 17:52You're probably the most saved person on
- 17:53the planet.
- 17:57What? Yeah, you're probably the most
- 17:58saved person on the planet.
- 18:00I don't know if I have faith in Jesus.
- 18:04Do you want to have faith in Jesus?
- 18:05Well, yeah.
- 18:07Do you want to be saved? Yes.
- 18:10Do you think he can save you? Do you
- 18:12believe that Jesus has the power to save
- 18:15dead sinners?
- 18:17Yes.
- 18:21Do you know you can't do that unless the
- 18:24Spirit opens your eyes to believe that?
- 18:26Well, there are many who who Even the
- 18:29demons believe. No, no, no, no. Don't
- 18:31don't don't misquote that passage. We're
- 18:32going to do a whole episode on that.
- 18:33But, that's not
- 18:35That is not what that passage means.
- 18:39That That word doesn't mean what you
- 18:41think it means. So, the quote The
- 18:42quote's always a mad.
- 18:44Listen.
- 18:46God is so tender and patient with those
- 18:48who are weak and meek and mild
- 18:52and struggle. Paul talks about this. He
- 18:55says, "In my moments of weakness is when
- 18:57I see the strength of my king." If
- 19:00you're new to Theocast, you may not have
- 19:01heard of this word. It's called pietism.
- 19:04You ever felt like the Christian life is
- 19:06a heavy burden versus rest and joy? That
- 19:10you wake up worrying about how well
- 19:12you're going to perform instead of
- 19:13thinking about what Christ has done for
- 19:15you. It's dread versus joy, really.
- 19:18That's pietism. Pietism causes
- 19:21Christians to look in on themselves and
- 19:23find their hope not in what Christ has
- 19:25done, but what they're doing.
- 19:28And we have a little book for you. It's
- 19:29free. We want you to download it and
- 19:31we're going to explain the difference
- 19:32between pietism and what we call
- 19:34confessionalism, or reformed theology,
- 19:36really. How it is that we walk by faith
- 19:39seeing the joy of Christ. And when Jesus
- 19:41says, "Come to me and I will give you
- 19:42rest." What does that look like? You can
- 19:45download it at our website. Just go to
- 19:47theocast.org. It's somewhere along the
- 19:49way we have said strong Christians are
- 19:52the true saved ones. It's like, "No."
- 19:53Paul's like, "No, it's the weak."
- 19:55Go to Corinthians.
- 19:57Who Who is it that God chose?
- 20:01He chose the weak,
- 20:03the broken,
- 20:04those who have no influence, those who
- 20:07have no power.
- 20:09If you look at your life and you're
- 20:10like, "Man, my I I there's nothing
- 20:11really about my life that that really
- 20:13reflects."
- 20:15Then you you're probably you're probably
- 20:19a candidate for to stop and say, "Then
- 20:21why do you even want to know Jesus?"
- 20:24Because God is drawing those who are
- 20:26weak and broken and meek and can't save
- 20:28themselves. That's who he saves. He
- 20:31saves the least of us. He saves the
- 20:34weak. He saves those who cannot save
- 20:36themselves. If you're over here like
- 20:38patting yourself on the back because you
- 20:40know, you've done all this stuff, then
- 20:43maybe you should worry. But if you're
- 20:45ever saying, "I can't do anything. I
- 20:47can't I can't do this.
- 20:49I'm so weak. I struggle."
- 20:52Let me encourage you.
- 20:54You're not the author of your faith.
- 20:57You're not the founder of your faith.
- 21:00And you are not going to perfect it and
- 21:02you're not going to finish it.
- 21:04He gives it to you and he completes it
- 21:06for you, cuz he's the object. He's the
- 21:09source. He's the power.
- 21:11The gospel is not here's power for you
- 21:14so you can save yourself. The gospel is
- 21:16the power of God unto salvation. It
- 21:19saves you, and the gospel is not a
- 21:21concept, it's a person. The gospel is
- 21:24Jesus. It is Jesus for you.
- 21:27And so this is so important. This
- 21:29illustration
- 21:30which brings me to tears almost every
- 21:32time I watch it by D.A. Carson. It is so
- 21:35vitally important that it if you're in
- 21:37this moment where you're like, I just I
- 21:39just don't know. Maybe I won't make it.
- 21:42Let me encourage you, dear believer. If
- 21:44you are putting the smallest fraction of
- 21:47faith
- 21:48in Christ, then you are safe and secure.
- 21:52Then you are okay.
- 21:54And you need to trust that and be good
- 21:56with that.
- 21:58And you need to go to a place that will
- 22:00present that to you. Go to a church that
- 22:03will preach to you the sufficiency of
- 22:05Christ.
- 22:07That will teach you the object of your
- 22:09faith.
- 22:10And that will not point to you as the
- 22:12founder of your faith. For you, that is
- 22:15the protector of your faith. For to you
- 22:18as the finisher of your faith.
- 22:21They will say, "Look unto Jesus."
- 22:23I mean, there's so many passages that
- 22:25just constantly warn us to look to
- 22:28Christ. I mean, I love this about James,
- 22:30right?
- 22:31Where James is correcting their wicked
- 22:33ways, and then he says to them, "But he
- 22:36gives more grace."
- 22:38Because it's grace that restores us.
- 22:40It's what grace that sustains us. Paul
- 22:43tells the Galatians, he says, "How is it
- 22:45that you began by the spirit, and you
- 22:47think you're going to protect per-
- 22:48perfect yourself by the flesh?" He says,
- 22:51"The way in which you began is the way
- 22:53in which you continue. How did you
- 22:55begin? He gave me my faith. He's the
- 22:58author of it. He
- 23:00authored it in me. He gave it to me.
- 23:03He goes to them, "What makes you think
- 23:04you're going to continue in any other
- 23:06way?"
- 23:07Grace.
- 23:08By faith.
- 23:10Faith in what? The grace of a king who
- 23:13perfectly laid his life down for you.
- 23:16Obeyed and then died. And now reigns as
- 23:19your great king. That is the
- 23:21sufficiency.
- 23:22>> [snorts]
- 23:22>> So, I don't I never get tired of talking
- 23:24about this at every angle that is there.
- 23:26From the wonder of what he has done to
- 23:28what it does to us. So, dear believer,
- 23:31go back and listen to this clip and be
- 23:33reminded once again
- 23:35that the blood that washes over me and
- 23:37my confidence and my rest is the same
- 23:39blood that washes over you. And you
- 23:41might be sitting there and saying, "I
- 23:43wish I had the confidence of John.
- 23:45I wish I had the confidence of these D.
- 23:47A. Carsons and these big heroes. I wish
- 23:49I had that."
- 23:51Man, I must not be saved cuz I don't
- 23:53have that.
- 23:54I'm not saved by my confidence.
- 23:59You're not saved by your confidence.
- 24:03That means you're saved by your faith.
- 24:06You're putting faith in your faith.
- 24:08That's just as bad as putting faith in
- 24:09your faithfulness. Don't put faith in
- 24:12your faith.
- 24:13Well, I don't know if I have faith.
- 24:15What is faith? Let's talk about that for
- 24:17a moment. What is faith?
- 24:19Faith,
- 24:21biblically defined,
- 24:22is trust in a source outside of you,
- 24:27outside of your capacity.
- 24:29That's what faith is. Faith is the
- 24:31object of things not seen but hoped for,
- 24:33right? Like we want this. We have a
- 24:35hope. And our hope is what? Grounded in
- 24:39reality. And though, what is that
- 24:40reality? Jesus Christ. Well, who's Jesus
- 24:43Christ? He is the son of God who became
- 24:46a man who could take your place in
- 24:48obedience because Adam failed and then
- 24:50died for your sins because you're a
- 24:51sinner and rose again defeating death,
- 24:54meaning that you don't have to die and
- 24:56you don't no longer have to live
- 24:57righteous because you can't because the
- 25:00first Adam failed and the second Adam
- 25:01succeeded, and so he's offering this to
- 25:04you saying, do you think that that can
- 25:06save your soul from the pits of
- 25:10destruction under God's wrath? Do you
- 25:12think that me is enough?
- 25:16When Jesus says, I am the way, the
- 25:17truth, and the life. No one can come to
- 25:19the Father but by me. Do you think it's
- 25:21enough? The road is narrow and no one
- 25:22can find it. What road?
- 25:24Because they think there's multiple
- 25:25paths to the Father. He's like, no,
- 25:26there's one.
- 25:29There's only one. Father,
- 25:31good teacher, what must I do? It's like,
- 25:33what do you need to do to be saved? Oh,
- 25:35okay. Here's what you need to do. Be
- 25:38perfect. You be perfect.
- 25:41You want to know what you need to do?
- 25:44You be perfect.
- 25:46And the rich man walks away. Why? Cuz he
- 25:49isn't perfect. And then what does the
- 25:50disciples say about the rich young
- 25:52ruler? Jesus, well, if he can't be
- 25:54saved, who can be saved? Because they
- 25:55assumed his righteousness was the
- 25:57blessings of God upon his life, his
- 25:59wealth was the result of his
- 26:01righteousness, and they said, well, man,
- 26:03if that dude can't be saved. And Jesus
- 26:05says, with man, it is impossible. If you
- 26:08sit there and you say
- 26:11I talk about this in my book about law
- 26:12gospel distinction.
- 26:14If you sit there and say that the rich
- 26:16young ruler
- 26:17was unwilling to give up his wealth,
- 26:19that's why he wasn't saved, you didn't
- 26:22listen to Jesus.
- 26:25If the man gave up his wealth, he saved
- 26:28himself. And what does Jesus say? With
- 26:30man, it is impossible, but with God, all
- 26:32things are possible.
- 26:35Man, I got a little heated about this
- 26:37because I want to liberate you. There's
- 26:39these these people who are sitting here
- 26:41and you're just you're drowning in grief
- 26:45and despair, and the and the accuser
- 26:47comes night and day and he's pointing
- 26:49out his sins to you, and he's telling
- 26:51you you're never going to be enough.
- 26:53You're never going to have enough faith.
- 26:55Hear me, dear believer. Come to Jesus,
- 26:59all you are heavy laden by your wicked
- 27:03ways, by the ways in which you have
- 27:05failed Jesus Christ, by the way you are
- 27:06not faithful enough, by the way you do
- 27:08not have enough faith.
- 27:10Don't put your faith in your faith. Do
- 27:11not put your faith in your faithfulness.
- 27:13Put your faith in the object of Jesus
- 27:15Christ who says, "I will give you rest.
- 27:19My salvation is enough for you.
- 27:22I am the way, the truth, and the life.
- 27:25And if you come to me
- 27:27through faith,
- 27:29is saying Jesus,
- 27:31"I want you to save me.
- 27:34I can't do it.
- 27:36I want you to keep me, sustain me,
- 27:40and I want you to change me.
- 27:42I can't do it."
- 27:44Now that, my friend,
- 27:47will change you. Because you've given
- 27:49[snorts] up.
- 27:50You've given up on your faith. And you
- 27:53And you've given up on your
- 27:54faithfulness.
- 27:55And you've looked to Jesus.
- 27:58And you can have every reason and every
- 27:59confident to trust that he is
- 28:01sufficient.
- 28:03Not long episode today, a little bit
- 28:05passionate one, but
- 28:06I wanted to just put this out for an
- 28:08encouragement to you.
- 28:10Hopefully this will be something that
- 28:11you listen to again. If you find
- 28:12yourself weak, or if you know someone
- 28:14who's struggling, send this to them.
- 28:17Encourage them.
- 28:18And if you want to know what to do from
- 28:20here, like after you hear this, our book
- 28:22on rest, very encouraging. You can
- 28:23download that. I should have a new book
- 28:25out very soon on enough in Christ. But
- 28:28honestly, this book here, every single
- 28:30chapter I am pushing you towards seeing
- 28:34how Christ is sufficient in all of
- 28:36scripture.
- 28:37Every single page you can learn how
- 28:40Christ is wondrous for you. He is for
- 28:44you,
- 28:45the sinner.
- 28:46And you can learn how to read that way
- 28:48and trust it and the Bible becomes a
- 28:50magical book of wonder because you're
- 28:52looking to see who Jesus Christ is for
- 28:54you in the covenants, in the blessings,
- 28:57in the law and the gospel, in the old
- 29:00and the new, and it's a supernatural
- 29:02power. By the way, that's what you want.
- 29:05You don't want a fleshly power where you
- 29:07have to do the work. You want a power
- 29:09that's outside of you and that's why
- 29:11it's spirit bound in the gospel of Jesus
- 29:14Christ. chapter in here is the cosmic
- 29:17view. You need a supernatural view of
- 29:19the Bible because it's the only way you
- 29:21have to faith in something that's
- 29:22outside yourself which is fleshly. You
- 29:25need to something that's in it's
- 29:26eternally powerful and that's Jesus
- 29:28Christ. So,
- 29:30if you can't afford it, it's all yours.
- 29:31Um just contact us, let us know. Uh we

- 29:59sharing this rest. I want this message
- 30:01out there because there's so many people
- 30:03hurting and so many people confused and
- 30:06listening to horrible sermons and
- 30:08horrible teaching, putting their faith
- 30:09in their faith, and putting their faith
- 30:11in their faithfulness. We don't want
- 30:12that. We want to liberate them. We want
- 30:13to give them a good gospel churches. We
- 30:15need men. Men, we need you to become
- 30:17pastors. We need you to become
- 30:19missionaries. If you want to become a
- 30:21pastor and missionary, contact me. Let's
- 30:23talk. We need more men in the pulpit. We
- 30:25need more people writing. We need more
- 30:27people talking about Jesus. People are
- 30:29leaving ministry
- 30:32uh by the thousands. We need to replace
- 30:34them with people who stand in the
- 30:36strength of the Lord and not in their
- 30:38own wisdom and not teaching people
- 30:39legalism and lordship salvation and all
- 30:41this garbage that's out there. We don't
- 30:43need that. We need gospel preachers who
- 30:45are holy men of God who stand up and
- 30:47say, "God is for you.
- 30:50He will rescue you and he will sustain
- 30:51you and he will save you." And stand by
- 30:53bedsides and visit hospitals and teach
- 30:56little children and disciple them in the
- 30:58truth of the sufficiency of Christ.
- 31:01Man, if you're excited about that, then
