1:36you if you're going to judge people
1:39based on the fact that you're looking at
1:42them and see that they have psycho in
1:45their eyes and written all across their
1:49forehead
1:51um is that discrimination I mean who's
1:56making those decisions I think it should
1:58be me

2:48story now so this is John ruton right
2:51Stephanie and John ruton who is John
2:54Russon who is Stephanie Lazarus well
2:56they both went to
2:58UCLA in uh I think they graduated in
3:051980 and uh they had they had a
3:08relationship they had a sort of on again
3:10off again Friends with Benefits you know
3:14college
3:16uh touchy feely relationship but
3:19Stephanie clearly got enamored and then
3:22after after college they they split
3:25right it was just like a college thing
3:27fling College fling thing
3:30and uh Stephanie went and become a cop
3:32John ruton went to do something else and
3:35then John ruton got married but
3:37Stephanie Lazarus didn't know John ruton
3:39got married did she and she threw a big
3:42surprise birthday 25th birthday surprise
3:45party for John ruton and at that party
3:49learned that he had since gotten married
3:52or he was just about to get married I
3:54think I think that's what it was he was
3:57engaged to a lovely thing where is where
4:00is uh Sherry

5:03holiday with him you can just take a
5:05picture of what he looks like and then
5:07take a photograph of that picture of him
5:09in tropical places you know he's always
5:13got this sort of half juny smile on his
5:17face you know obviously thinks he's a
5:19ladies man he's got two women after him
5:22probably
5:25more so anyway Stephanie thought that
5:28there was going to be some rekindling
5:31thing and she threw a surprise birthday
5:33a surprise birthday
5:35party is that ever a good
5:38idea I think someone's done that for me
5:41at least once and I hated it I was like
5:44get what what is
5:46this why is everyone in my
5:51house and you can't leave yourself you
5:55have to stay there it's like you're a
5:57hostage you know and your own
6:00house and you have to look like you're
6:03having a great time I I found it like
6:06like super passive
6:08aggressive you
6:11know I always find it's interesting to
6:13look at pictures of killers when they
6:15were
6:16children here's one of
6:19Stephanie when she was very very young
6:22look at her
6:23there can I zoom in on this I don't
6:26think I can unfortunately
6:29there she
6:30is and that's not my dad obviously
6:35that's uh someone someone's
6:39dad 1972 so she was 12 years old
6:43here so where were we in the story guys
6:47yeah uh Stephanie wanted to be with John
6:53John was engaged to
6:55Sherry
6:57Stephanie would start to make things is
6:59really uncomfortable like she'd show up
7:02to the house and say oh John John do you
7:05mind if you just uh fix my skars my
7:07water skis because I'm going water
7:09skiing and you can come if you like you
7:12know doing all of this stuff just just
7:14always around you know not respecting
7:17the bounds of the relationship and just
7:20like pushing it you
7:22know and uh I think she knew that John
7:25had a weak spot for her because he slept
7:29with her didn't he now as far as John
7:32will tell it he slept with Stephanie to
7:35give her one last time you know for
7:39closure to help her close the book and
7:43finally be able to break free of uh the
7:47wonder that is him and he chose to do
7:49that by Sleeping with her one more time
7:53you know no nothing to do with his own
7:55needs no no no no no this was for her so
7:59that could move on and have a clean
8:02break good one
8:04John shouldn't have done that John you
8:07know because you know what happened then
8:09is that Stephanie showed up to bearing
8:12in mind she's already LAPD law
8:15enforcement right she's giving Sherry
8:17these weird looks while she's holding
8:19her gun from across the room and then
8:22she shows up at Sherry's work now Sherry
8:25works at the hospital right she's a
8:28nurse
8:30and um let's go back to the picture of
8:32Sherry where's
8:34Sherry she's a nurse
8:37and
8:39Stephanie those names sound familiar
8:42don't they I kind of get them confused
8:44Stephanie shows up at Sherry's work and
8:46has basically a fist fight with her in
8:50the hospital while she's dressed in an
8:53evening gown right full hair and makeup
8:58evening dress heals the lot shows up at
9:02the hospital and basically starts saying
9:06John's mine and he he'll never love you
9:10the way he loved me and threatening her
9:13life and all this stuff and there's all
9:14witnesses to this right anyway soon
9:17after that Sherry gets found dead in the
9:21apartment she shared with
9:26John and you know the LAPD they look
9:29into it oh by the way we're heading west
9:32today guys we're going all the way to
9:34californiaa it's the days of 49 and
9:36we're in a rush for some gold okay
9:39heading over to California today I think
9:41it's our first time in the Golden State
9:44and one of many to
9:45come it's going to be a long long time
9:48we spend in uh in that state anyway uh
9:53yeah the LAPD look into it but you know
9:56they they saw that there was uh in the
9:59house someone had left a CD player and a
10:02VCR stacked next to the front door so
10:05the cops were like oh well that's that's
10:08clear indication of a uh burglary and
10:11this this this this must be a case of a
10:14burglary gone wrong probably Mexicans
10:18probably classic Mexicans yeah they love
10:21CD players and VCR is probably going to
10:24send it back across the border to TJ
10:28where they'll melt it down for parts
10:32that's what they do the Mexicans you see
10:34yeah they they pretty quickly said it
10:36was a burglary gone wrong now even John
10:38ruton started to say to the uh the cops
10:42LAPD and sher's parents because Sherry
10:45had confided in with her parents saying
10:48hey hey this this chick this cop this
10:52she's jealous of John and I think she's
10:54following me and I I I think it might be
10:56a problem and then she ends up dead
10:58brutal murdered I
11:00mean let's go through her her murder in
11:03a second but so John and the parents go
11:08to the LAPD and say hey look you know
11:10are you looking into Stephanie Lazarus
11:12you know that person who's a cop with
11:14your agency an LAPD patrol officer could
11:19it be her they said oh you watch too
11:21much TV too much
11:23TV
11:25so she wasn't investigated they did get
11:28some DNA because this is how she killed
11:30her right there was a there was a
11:31massive fight in the
11:34house and all stuff knocked over sher's
11:38face was bashed in with the bud of a
11:41gun and she was bitten there was a bite
11:44mark on her arm with DNA woman's DNA I
11:48don't know if they found that out in the
11:4980s or later when the DNA was
11:54tested but it was a pretty horrible you
11:56know and then she was shot I think three
11:58times
11:59where with the pillow used as a silencer
12:02you
12:04know so the case went cold no one was
12:08arrested probably Mexicans probably
12:10burglary CD player VCR stacked by the
12:14front door that's a clear indication of
12:16a Mexican burglary uh so case
12:20closed and I think there had been some
12:22other burglaries in the area that you
12:25know the the cops were just like yeah
12:26yeah we we don't have time for this
12:33but fast forward in time everyone's
12:36moved on oh yeah well Sherry got with
12:40John again and they went to Hawaii
12:42together but that wasn't for a few years
12:44after the killing and it didn't really
12:47you know I think that was in
12:4819889 killing was in ' 86 Hawaii with
12:53John and Stephanie 89 and then Stephanie
12:56got married to someone else in ' 92 so
12:58that was just 6 years after the uh
13:03murder so that was worth it wasn't
13:06it nothing happened nothing changed
13:09really he went on holiday with him
13:13once anyway the case went cold and years
13:17later in the early 2000s the L had freed
13:20up there was no more crime hell
13:22Hallelujah there was no more crime in
13:23Los Angeles so the bosses of LAPD were
13:26like okay we're going to put some
13:28officers on these cold cases and see
13:31what you can do see if there's new tests
13:33see if you can find anything in the uh
13:36in the evidence and we'll try and
13:37prosecute some of the old cases because
13:39we got so much time on our hands because
13:41there's no more crime in Los
13:43Angeles so they got to this case File
13:46and they found that there had been new
13:49DNA developments in the testing so they
13:51did a rerun of the analysis of the DNA
13:54that was found at the scene and they got
13:56a full match of a person whereas before
13:59they had even they had either only been
14:01able to discern it was human or a female
14:04woman but they couldn't say
14:06who and then they looked through the
14:09file and in the file was loads of stuff
14:11about hey that Stephanie Lazarus was
14:14really suspicious and she was jealous
14:17and she came to the hospital and made
14:19this big scene and was making threats
14:21against sher's life and blah blah blah
14:23blah blah blah so they were like okay
14:25well let's see if we can match the DNA
14:27to Stephanie's DNA how did they get her
14:30DNA because they can't request it
14:32because Stephanie might think
14:33something's up right so they send a cop
14:35to follow her and they follow her to a
14:38shopping mall where Stephanie Lazarus
14:40buys a drink with a straw you know a Big
14:44Gulp or whatever and the cop follows her
14:47and Stephanie discards this paper cup
14:50with a straw in the trash can the cop
14:52that's following her picks up that cup
14:56and puts it in a little plastic bag and
14:58evidence bag right sealed sends it to
15:01the lab it's an exact match to the DNA
15:05that was found on the bite
15:08mark at the scene of Sher rasmusen's
15:12murder how about that huh so they want
15:16to get Stephanie Lazarus to speak about
15:19this case on record right now they can't
15:22go up to her and say hey do you mind
15:23coming and answering some questions
15:25about that murder of the everyone said
15:28you were jealous about about your ex who
15:31married someone else and then she ended
15:33up dead you want to come and answer some
15:35questions about that cuz we found your
15:37DNA and we've got you you know if they
15:41do that she's going to lawyer up
15:42immediately right she's a longterm
15:45detective and by the way she's no longer
15:47a patrol officer she's risen through the
15:49rank she's a highly decorated law
15:53enforcement person detective whatever of
15:58Art left crime the Fine Arts forgery
16:02department is her Department she owns
16:05that department there's a picture of her
16:07like holding a Picasso that she got back
16:10for the collector or something yeah I
16:13didn't even know they had a fine arts
16:15division in the LAPD but hey ho we learn
16:18every
16:19day so they have to get her to speak on
16:23record under some Roose right so they
16:25say hey hey hey hey Stephanie we've got
16:28some we're running a case about an art
16:31theft and because you're the main guy
16:34around here about all things art theft
16:38could you maybe come and have a look at
16:40some of the evidence with us and tell us
16:43what you would do because this would be
16:45really big for our career if we could
16:47get this guy so they say okay because
16:51the nature of the information is quite
16:53delicate let's go and speak somewhere
16:55private now where could we go that's uh
16:57really private and like a soundproof
16:59room hey how about we all just go down
17:02to the uh the interrogation offices
17:06because those rooms are designed to be
17:08private right yeah we'll all go and sit
17:10in there so the reason they do that is
17:13because they want to get Sherry to give
17:15up her gun which apparently in this
17:17police station it's policy that if you
17:20go anyone going in to the interrogation
17:25area gives up their gun at the door and
17:27puts it in a little Locker for security
17:29reasons right now we know that they
17:31don't do that in other states we see
17:33Sarah Boon uh Scott loens got his gun in
17:36the interrogation room we see Chanda
17:38halderson detective Shunk has his gun in
17:41the interrogation room so I don't know
17:43if it's a California thing or an LAPD
17:45thing or what but apparently in this
17:48interrogation office you cannot have a
17:50gun because they don't want it to have a
17:52gun because if they Corner her and say
17:55well we know the murder was you and
17:56you're going away to jail for the rest
17:58of your life and all of this little life
18:00that you've made for yourself this risen
18:03through the ranks uh lap detective uh
18:06all this stuff you in the newspaper with
18:09the mayor that's all going away today
18:12and you're going to the county jail
18:13awaiting trial where you'll be certainly
18:15found guilty and maybe sentenced to
18:18death so they don't want her to have a
18:20gun when they bring her this news to her
18:23right and of course the interrogation
18:27camera is just in a bag it's a secret
18:29camera so she doesn't know she's being
18:31filmed and I I don't believe she ever
18:34even she doesn't you know sometimes they
18:36look at the camera don't they like we
18:38saw that with Daria dealo where she
18:40looked at the camera like 18 times when
18:43she's in the cop when she's in the car
18:45with that undercover cop going no I'm
18:475,000% sure yeah no I definitely won't
18:49need to kill my husband so uh how much
18:52will that

18:55cost yeah no it was a script it was a
18:58script it was all part of a script well
19:00sadly there is no script for Stephanie
19:02Lazarus she is coming into this she
19:05hasn't thought about this in years right
19:07it's been
19:0823 years as far as she's concerned she
19:11is free and clear right doesn't even
19:14need to have a story in her head because
19:16it was a million years ago right as she
19:18will tell us anyway I think that's
19:21enough of an introduction it's just off
19:23the top of my head I was going to go
19:24through the case and make notes I even
19:27got a pad of paper here and a pen you
19:30know what it says on the pad of paper
19:31it's got two words at the top of the
19:33page it says Stephanie

23:18pause this is a major person in her life
23:21very important figure in her
23:23developmental period
23:26of existence and she would just go

23:38that they do they're great with the
23:40tactics these two cops that interview
23:42Stephanie Lazarus are really good at
23:45their job oh yeah I went to school with

25:15lived in the dorms for 2 years um you
25:18guys lived in the same dorm yeah okay

25:26good friends yeah was there any
25:28relationship or anything that developed
25:29between you guys yeah I mean we dated uh

25:36all about well it's relating to uh his

25:44it's relating to his wife you know that
25:47that pesky unsolved murder from 23 years
25:52ago you know you know the Brut you
25:54remember the brutal homicide just lay
25:57unsolved and was blamed on Mexican
26:01burglars that didn't

27:25indicate and we didn't want to come up
27:27to you at your death and ask those kinds
27:29of questions or do anything you know how
27:31up there people can see what's going on
27:32if you go into an interview room or
27:34people are in there getting supplies so
27:35we we wanted to afford you some privacy
27:38some confidentiality to talk about this
27:39cuz we thought it might be you know
27:41something you know you're married to
27:42someone else obviously and so forth and
27:44that you may not want to you know talk
27:46about these things in that setting where
27:47someone you know we don't want the rumor
27:48mill or gossip or any of that kind of
27:49stuff to start that's fine I mean so we
27:51what a great cover huh yeah you know
27:54you're married to someone else and you
27:56know the rumor mill and it's hard to
27:59stop that mail once it gets going and
28:02then people talk so this is all really
28:04for you Stephanie okay we're affording
28:07you some privacy okay okay
28:11Stephanie we did this just as as a means
28:13to try and speak to you in just a
28:15confidential place where you you know
28:17where where your business isn't out
28:18there for other people you know your
28:20division you know God that's been a
28:22million years ago I mean you know
28:26um what year is it now now 2009 I mean I
28:29graduated in ' 82 82 yeah um we we get a
28:34wonderful autobiography of Stephanie
28:37Lazarus during this interrogation we get
28:39the full history of Stephanie Lazarus
28:42during this interrogation she graduated
28:44in ' 82 she was born in
28:471960 her first car was in
28:501968 Chevy

29:11dated every single member of
29:16the Los Angeles Fire

29:35well it wasn't really a dating

30:10remember if he was born let's say I'm
30:11born in 60 1960 I don't know if he was
30:14born in 58 or 5 what the [ __ ] is she
30:17talking about the question was how long
30:19did you date John I I was born in 1960 I
30:23don't know if he was born in 1958 or 57
30:27he could have been born in 59 I uh I I
30:30started UCLA in
30:321978 I graduated in
30:361982
30:39uh she what what is she doing she's just
30:41buying some breathing space to
30:46think and what I mean she's trying to
30:50camouflage herself with all this extra
30:53information
30:54and
30:56also Fain ignorance I mean they've told
31:02her that it's relating to John ruton and
31:06specifically his wife and she still
31:08doesn't know what they're talking about
31:10she knows that that woman was murdered
31:14and she knows that the case is unsolved
31:17for 23 years it's clearly what do you
31:20what do you think it's going to be about
31:21we've discovered that Sher rasmusen had
31:24an unpaid parking ticket from 19
31:291985 do you know anything about that

31:35his parents I knew his sister his
31:37brother went to
31:38Northridge um his brother his brother
31:41went to North
31:43Ridge why are you telling us this how
31:47long did you date his brother went to
31:49Northridge I think that was in

31:54uh he loved tacos every Monday was Taco
31:58Monday for his brother in North Ridge it
32:00was the North Ridge Taco Wing
32:03fraternity you know Sister spent the
32:06night at my house before obviously I
32:08spent the night at his house before he
32:09probably spent the night at my house
32:11before um you know I yeah I don't well

33:01maybe um April of '92 it was Scott being
33:05your husband yeah I'm trying to think I

33:10this will be married I got married in
33:131996 I think I met Scott 92 prior to
33:17that I couldn't tell you how long I had
33:19talked you know talked to John prior to
33:21that but since you since you met your
33:23husband Scott you haven't talked to him
33:26I mean he may have called me uh once or
33:29twice before we got married right um you
33:33know jeez I I lived I moved to see me in
33:371994 because I lost my house in the
33:39earthquake oh oh I lost my house in the
33:42earthquake so feel sorry for
33:45me um uh quite honestly I probably keep
33:48in contact with a few people from the
33:51dorms we we all we all lived on the 10th
33:53floor um and um
34:01there's about three or four people I
34:04keep in contact with there's probably
34:05like six or eight of us that were all
34:07really close and who are those people oh
34:10jeez um Diana
34:13Basta um the people I still keep I I
34:16haven't been in contact with her in a
34:18long time um I mean what what you know
34:21what's what's I mean what's this all
34:23about I mean well let me ask you what
34:26ended the relationship between you and
34:28John you know I don't it was kind of a
34:32weird relationship I mean we we we date
34:35yeah casual pretty
34:38casual did um I can't say that he was my
34:41boyfriend I don't know that he would
34:42have considered me his girlfriend um we
34:45just we dated we did things I played
34:47Sports in college he played basketball
34:50his brother played basketball um we just
34:54you know it
34:56just didn't work out out I mean I don't
34:58know what to tell God I can imagine this
35:00woman playing sports you know wanting to
35:03beat all the men and taking it real
35:07serious you know foul
35:10ball every dirty trick in the book
35:13anything to win she's a [ __ ]
35:15psycho you it was like I went out there
35:18it's just a game Stephanie guys um saw
35:22other guys I went on lots of
35:24vacations um you know and and once you
35:27got
35:28split were you guys still friends or
35:30kind of you know problems yeah we were
35:34kind of John was
35:37definitely after he suspected that I
35:39brutally murdered his wife he was kind
35:41of
35:43like but then we went to Hawaii the big
35:46Islands because I was doing my scuba
35:47diving training and he was still a
35:49little bit
35:52like friendly not friendly no I don't
35:55think it was not friendly I mean we were
35:56friendly um
35:58uh I know that we went to
36:01Hawaii um at one point um another friend
36:05of mine who's actually dying right now
36:08uh was went to Hawaii with us um at and
36:11every everyone everyone she she mentions
36:14is either dying or dead it's kind of
36:16worrying when we're dealing with a
36:18psycho killer that can you know I don't
36:21know I don't know Point um remember
36:25roughly when that was oh jeez um

36:31think I'd have to check my pictures um

38:40it um a true veteran of the uh police
38:45World you'd think after all of those
38:47years of experience she would know not
38:50to do 400
38:53million badly acted facial expression
39:03like well I I I I don't know I it was a
39:08long time ago what
39:12what anything about her well I think she
39:15I I'm going to say I think she was a
39:17nurse
39:20um man I can't even remember how he he
39:22said he met her uh you I mean I I yeah I

39:27ask you did you go to their wedding you
39:29know no I didn't go to their wedding um
39:32no I don't did not go to their wedding
39:36um yeah I thought about crashing the
39:39wedding and bursting through the doors

40:26who were at at the school at UCLA you
40:29guys kind of and the way she said that I
40:31I couldn't even tell you what year he
40:33got married you know what what she's
40:36doing there is is saying see see I can't

40:42expect me to remember whether or not I
40:44ever met Sher rasmon or showed up at the
40:46hospital wearing an evening dress and
40:48threatened her life I don't remember I
40:50don't know I may have I may have friends
40:54during and after school so I don't know

40:58when once he was married or anything

52:15his brother playing B you just put them
52:16all on your computer so you could have
52:17him accessible and do things with him
52:19well my partner is a big photo thing and
52:21he had a deal to scan so I spent a ton
52:25of time just scan Banning photos I mean
52:27I paid a company to do it mhm um so I've
52:30got photos of I mean his brother his
52:32sister you know 10,000 pictures oh yeah
52:36how long did that take them
52:39months now what what do they do they put
52:41that on a I'm just curious myself they
52:43put it on they get get all on one DVD
52:45they don't need like a hard drive or
52:46anything no no there's like I think 11
52:49DVDs yeah I haven't even I don't have oh
52:51it's it's a series of DVDs that they put
52:53them on oh yeah oh okay yeah I mean I
52:55got I'm not that familiar with computer

1:02:3184 to 85 I think and then I went to
1:02:34devire and that's when I met Mike um
1:02:38what happened

1:02:43firemen and what the station next door
1:02:46no actually cuz I used to work Hollywood
1:02:48so I just wonder if it's the station it
1:02:49was in when I worked devire I met Mike
1:02:52oh okay all right and I'm trying to
1:02:55think I went to demure in 85 and I'm
1:02:58thinking
1:02:59that I would have met him probably
1:03:02sometime shortly after I went to devire
1:03:04cuz I met him and his I actually met his
1:03:07buddies at a

1:03:21know uh Mo mostly in my car uh parked by
1:03:27the airport that that's where we went

1:05:17introduced me to Mike so that's how I
1:05:19met Mike and Mike dated M Mike and I
1:05:21dated yeah they they introduced me to
1:05:23Mike they said hey Mike do you do you
1:05:25want some easy chick that will you know
1:05:30do anything you want and not
1:05:34require uh you
1:05:38know so um and and not I wouldn't even
1:05:42say I couldn't even tell you for how
1:05:43long because then it say we decided you
1:05:45know it wasn't working out and we'd be
1:05:47better friends and you know he
1:05:50introduced me I think to some other guy
1:05:52on that who now is on LAPD um

1:06:39if Mike Mike may
1:06:42have I'm trying to remember Mike may
1:06:46have dated
1:06:47um a girl that he
1:06:50dat God it sounds too weird um Randy may
1:06:55have dated a gal that Mike was dating
1:06:59and that and then Mike Randy broke up
1:07:01with that gal I couldn't even tell you
1:07:04the girl's name if I'm even thinking of
1:07:06the story right I think she's just
1:07:07talking about herself isn't she Randy
1:07:11broke up with the other woman that
1:07:14wasn't me and then got back with me and
1:07:19uh we dated you know in the in the in
1:07:23the car park behind the airport
1:07:26you know in between our
1:07:28shifts right and then I started dating
1:07:31Randy
1:07:33yeah I you know so again I mean not like
1:07:37I was a huge Floy or anything but no but
1:07:40you know you were a such a huge
1:07:43Floy and don't be shy about it you know
1:07:45we know Stephanie we we get it you were
1:07:49a massive Floy everybody in the fire
1:07:52department you've got you've got
1:07:55uh
1:07:57Randy cordel what what was it Randy
1:08:01C what was it I forgot it was sounded
1:08:04like a sex position oh I mean a lot of
1:08:07times right at least from my female
1:08:09partners that I've had you know it's
1:08:10hard dating guys that aren't involved in
1:08:13kind of our Circle right because some a
1:08:14lot some guys are intimidated by you
1:08:16know women police officers yeah Randy
1:08:18was like an engineer at the time uh he
1:08:20was like a some kind of an engineer on a
1:08:22truck on a rig on a fire truck no no um
1:08:25an engineer um oh a professional
1:08:26engineer and then I think he lost a job
1:08:29and then came on on the department I see
1:08:31so um getting back to some stuff as far
1:08:35as you recall after John's wife
1:08:38I did you start a relationship again
1:08:41with with John or dating casually or
1:08:44anything like that like I
1:08:47said he met Greg and I in Hawaii okay
1:08:53um that was something you guys kind of
1:08:55plan together like go as a group you see
1:08:57the CPS have taken her away from the
1:08:59direct questions about Sherry
1:09:02right and Stephanie is falling for that
1:09:06because she's quite eager to go and
1:09:08answer these questions about Hawaii and
1:09:11Mike the fireman and uh you know
1:09:14anything but the murder if we can have
1:09:16questions not about the murder that'll
1:09:19be great no questions about the murder
1:09:21thank you when really what she should be
1:09:23saying is listen
1:09:25uh do you want me to get in touch with
1:09:29John are you speaking with him does he
1:09:32know that the case has been reopened
1:09:34I've probably got a number haven't
1:09:36spoken to him in years but I I certainly
1:09:39remember speaking about uh sher's murder
1:09:43with John at the time and uh what can
1:09:47you tell me about the new
1:09:50information how can I help how can I
1:09:53help because it would be great if we
1:09:55could finally bring Justice to my
1:09:57college
1:09:59friend you know but instead what do we
1:10:01get we get well I just um I couldn't
1:10:06tell you I may have I may be we dated I
1:10:12I I was dating a fireman and then all
1:10:15the firemen at
1:10:17once I was getting passed around the
1:10:20fire department like a like an
1:10:23old I don't know ho hose like a hose
1:10:27they just hosed me
1:10:29down are you ran into him or no I I
1:10:33think that obviously I must have talked
1:10:35to him and I said hey I'm going to
1:10:38Hawaii with my buddy Greg we're we're
1:10:41we're scuba we just got certified scuba
1:10:43diving um uh we're going to be in Hawaii
1:10:46hey if you want to come and join us come
1:10:48join us right and I I think that's what
1:10:50it was um I I may have asked some other
1:10:53people to as well um you know uh what
1:10:58island did we go
1:11:00to I think
1:11:02Honolulu the big island in Kawaii he
1:11:05either met us on the big island or Kawai
1:11:07I'm thinking
1:11:08of Greg and I might have scuba dived a
1:11:11lot in on the big island as well as
1:11:14Kawai I'm I I don't remember which
1:11:16island again I'd have to look at my
1:11:18pictures um I traveled a lot she'd have
1:11:21to look at her
1:11:22pictures um on my vacations I mean was
1:11:25always gone for at least a month um and
1:11:29I would go places and I would either run
1:11:31into people or you know you know meet
1:11:34people um and Greg this Greg were
1:11:38talking about he
1:11:40was like someone you were dating or just
1:11:43a buddy no you know what I would I would
1:11:45say yeah just a buddy just a naked buddy
1:11:48you know when I was done with the fire
1:11:50department I went on to Greg you know I
1:11:53I went from fire department to scuba
1:11:56divers uh then I got back with John for
1:12:00a
1:12:00while and then um I met Scott who is
1:12:06this Scott
1:12:08huh we started out um probably just
1:12:12buddies um and either [ __ ] buddies
1:12:16there's a name for it it's called [ __ ]
1:12:18buddies I was with somebody or he was
1:12:20with somebody but was all we it was kind
1:12:22of like we ended up just kind of being
1:12:24like brother and sister
1:12:25oh my God what um and maybe he wanted
1:12:31something more but um you know it's just
1:12:33yeah but just once and nothing serious
1:12:37it never you know worked out but we we
1:12:40we did things together um you know I
1:12:43consider them I've probably known
1:12:46them let's see I've been on the job
1:12:48almost 26 years I've probably known
1:12:50green 23 24 years um so you still talk
1:12:54to him oh yeah he's dying of liver
1:12:57cancer right now yeahor yeah so um so
1:13:01you know I I well maybe this news will
1:13:03be just the thing to send him over the
1:13:06edge you know Greg we've got bad
1:13:10news it's
1:13:12Stephanie we've just learned that she's
1:13:16crazy and she's somewhere checking her
1:13:19pictures now but she has 10,000 so she
1:13:22might not have checked them by the time
1:13:24you go Greg but we just wanted to let
1:13:26you know that she's in custody and uh
1:13:30yeah we we know all about her now Greg I
1:13:33consider him a good friend um you know
1:13:39um you know I don't know what to tell
1:13:41you on that um I mean when when you
1:13:43heard about uh John's wife being killed
1:13:46I mean what was your what was your
1:13:48reaction I mean you thought you heard
1:13:50about it what through a friend or in a
1:13:52bulletin or something either a friend or
1:13:53a bulletin um I obviously I mean I
1:13:55called I called the family um I called
1:13:59maybe some of his friends that that that
1:14:00I knew and I mean obviously it shocked
1:14:02you if you're if I heard it at work you
1:14:04know um which I may have I I faintly
1:14:07remember a bulletin going around um
1:14:11either that or somebody called me I I Al
1:14:13don't remember um uh and then I called
1:14:16probably called his family um called uh
1:14:20I don't initially I can't say if I
1:14:23initially spoke to him or not I honestly
1:14:25don't remember I may have said she did
1:14:28have a relationship with John's
1:14:30family uh I don't know if when she says
1:14:33family there is she talking about sher's
1:14:36family or Jon's family because she was
1:14:38writing letters to John's mother saying
1:14:42how heartbroken she was that he had
1:14:46gotten engaged to Sherry and how Jon was
1:14:50making a terrible mistake and how they
1:14:52belonged together and blah blah blah
1:14:55blah blah blah blah yeah all that [ __ ]
1:14:57she was writing to John's mother with
1:15:01all of that [ __ ] does somebody hey have
1:15:04him call me if he wants to talk and then
1:15:07he may have done that uhuh um you know
1:15:12um do you know what the circumstances
1:15:14were regarding her

1:15:25I don't know if it was you know if it
1:15:26was a burglary or something uh yeah it's
1:15:29I mean it's been so many years I I mean
1:15:31I can faintly Mexicans I think
1:15:34definitely Mexicans because they did
1:15:36that thing where they took the CD player
1:15:38and the VCR and they stacked them by the
1:15:41door big indicator Mexicans Mexican
1:15:45burglars wasn't that a thing in the
1:15:49Scott Peterson Lacy Peterson case as
1:15:52well like yes yes there there was
1:15:55burglaries in the area Mexicans going
1:15:57around burglarizing houses stacking VCRs
1:16:01and CD players by the front door
1:16:04California what are you
1:16:06doing think that I may have saw a flyer
1:16:09yeah may have had her picture on it you
1:16:11know um I mean I know I can
1:16:15remember everything that's ever happened
1:16:18to me I mean you know there's nothing
1:16:21whether whether it's a a huge event or
1:16:24time small things I pretty much remember
1:16:27everything if you ask me a question
1:16:29about something that happened 20 years
1:16:32ago I'll be able to tell you in great
1:16:35detail about
1:16:38it I'm trying to think of like anything

1:18:17would date other people I would date

1:18:23know at one point
1:18:25I mean he may have been dating her or I
1:18:28don't know maybe he was married I don't
1:18:29even remember and I'm like you know what
1:18:32why are you calling me if you're either
1:18:35dating her or living with her or married
1:18:36to her I cuz I honest don't remember the
1:18:38time frame um and I'm like come on knock
1:18:40it off and I'm and now I'm thinking I I
1:18:42may have gone to her and say hey you
1:18:43know what you know what is he dating you
1:18:46he's he's bothering me um and so I'm
1:18:49thinking that we had a conversation
1:18:50about that um one or two maybe
1:18:55you know it could have been three I
1:18:57don't want to say I had that is a really
1:18:59Round The house's way to say yeah I went
1:19:03and warned her off I said he's calling
1:19:07me he loves me we belong together and
1:19:10you better back off Shelly or whatever
1:19:13your name
1:19:17is I may have I may have gone to her and
1:19:21said he's he's dating you he's bothering
1:19:24me
1:19:25and what what what does that mean he's
1:19:28bothering me yeah I'm sure you're really
1:19:31bothered I'm Frank um and I'm like come
1:19:34on knock it off and I'm and now I'm
1:19:35thinking I may I may have gone to her
1:19:37and say hey you know what you know what
1:19:39is he dating you he's he's bothering me
1:19:42um and so I'm thinking that we had a
1:19:44conversation about that um one or two
1:19:48maybe you know it could have been three
1:19:51I don't want to say I had three
1:19:52conversations with her work or at their
1:19:56at their house or no I'm thinking that
1:19:58I'm you know he obviously must have told
1:20:00me where she worked I'm thinking it was
1:20:02a hospital somewhere in LA and I just I
1:20:06mean I could have been again what year
1:20:08was that where was I working
1:20:16um you know I don't I don't I'm trying
1:20:19to think of
1:20:19where when did you say they got
1:20:22married I don't know I think it was like
1:20:25in 85 or 86 or something like that you
1:20:28know we we we we just kind of picked
1:20:30this up we you know don't know a lot

1:31:05year did you come on the job

1:31:11school yeah I worked at a law firm for a

1:31:19anyway in regards to seeing him not
1:31:21seeing him we went to friend's wedding

1:31:28have gone to some of his friends
1:31:29weddings from where he worked um he may
1:31:32have gone to things with me you know
1:31:37um you know I mean I don't know how many
1:31:40times we went to do things you know or
1:31:42didn't do things right like I said his
1:31:45sister um um I know his sister uh his
1:31:50brother his sister I know stayed at my
1:31:52townhouse
1:31:54a number of times I couldn't tell you
1:31:56how many times right um I would watch
1:31:59his brother you know shoot uh take
1:32:01pictures at a basketball game or two
1:32:04where was your townhouse at in Granada
1:32:06Hills um below the Odyssey I don't know
1:32:10oh I'm sorry the 405 and the five um the
1:32:13405 the I'm just going to pause it for a
1:32:16second guys I think a plane is going
1:32:19over and scrambling our
1:32:21connection that inconsiderate at
1:32:25playing okay I think we're back now the
1:32:28405 turns into the five the 118 um they
1:32:31they came down in the earthquake okay so
1:32:35okay and you're saying when you went to
1:32:38see her do you would you remember if it
1:32:41was at her house or at the place she
1:32:44worked
1:32:45at no I'm thinking that I'm thinking it
1:32:48was
1:32:49probably for some reason I want to say
1:32:51that the hospital seemed that you know
1:32:54if you say he got married in 855 or
1:32:57something I'm thinking that you know
1:32:59maybe the hospital was on my way to work
1:33:01in Hollywood I mean that's kind of
1:33:04sounding
1:33:05familiar um would you have gone on duty
1:33:09oh no I'm I'm sure I wouldn't if I no
1:33:11I'm I'm pretty good about not doing
1:33:13stuff you know I mean I'm not I'm I'm
1:33:15pretty good about not using my uh
1:33:19position of authority to threaten people
1:33:21in my personal life yeah I'm sure
1:33:24right if man if she hadn't have uh
1:33:28killed Shelly Sherry you know you can
1:33:32guarantee it would be like she'd be
1:33:34calling in favors from cops saying yeah
1:33:36put a bolo out on uh this car silver BMW
1:33:41put a bow on stop it for any minor
1:33:43infraction and you know if you could
1:33:45really give us some hassle really make
1:33:47her
1:33:49suffer saying that you know you haven't
1:33:52done stuff on duty but I I I would have

1:34:01doing stuff on duty so so you would have
1:34:04gone if it was in route to work you more
1:34:07than likely you would have gone to her
1:34:08work and had this discussion with her I
1:34:11mean that's sounding familiar I mean
1:34:13that's now that you guys are bringing
1:34:14this stuff up um I mean it sound that
1:34:17sounds familiar um but again I mean you
1:34:20know what what's this all
1:34:22about again do I need a
1:34:25lawyer what's I mean what's this got to
1:34:27do with me dating him and you know her
1:34:29getting killed I mean I I don't that you
1:34:32know I don't have anything to do with it
1:34:33and you got something that's somebody
1:34:36said you know whatever I mean well like
1:34:38we said we we just literally got this
1:34:40the other day and and you're going
1:34:42through it yeah and you see you saw me
1:34:43say Nick's Next Door right and and so
1:34:46you know I mean obviously it's like we
1:34:48recognize the name we know you know you
1:34:49work next door to us and so we're trying
1:34:51to get some background we're trying to
1:34:52figure this out I mean this from a long
1:34:54time ago know you know and things have
1:34:56been kind of slow for us and so you know
1:34:58Chief Beck has said hey you know I want
1:35:00you guys working I don't want you just
1:35:01sitting around reading the paper yeah so
1:35:03he's kind of pushing some older cases
1:35:04out even to the guys that work Active
1:35:06cases because you know and so we see
1:35:07this and we're just like oh you know we
1:35:09want to talk to you about it but of
1:35:10course the only reason we did it here is
1:35:12because we're getting into some pretty
1:35:13personal stuff in your relationship know
1:35:15my I my husband's on the job we've been
1:35:17married you know we don't want to take
1:35:18the risk we don't want to take the risk
1:35:19we one of those interview rooms and even
1:35:20when the door closed someone's going to
1:35:21get supplies and see is on a monitor
1:35:23hears I appreciate it I mean I
1:35:25appreciate like I said that's where
1:35:26people go when there's orals you know
1:35:27when they're doing orals guys will go in
1:35:28there and try and watch what are the
1:35:30answers yeah Stephanie does all of her
1:35:32orals in the parking lot behind the
1:35:34runway at uh
1:35:38LAX she's got a queue of
1:35:41firemen yeah she polishes their
1:35:46helmets to the question you know I
1:35:48didn't know that yeah so so we just we
1:35:49just want to afford you the most privacy
1:35:51and confidentiality we could no I
1:35:53appreciate like I said I mean this goes
1:35:55way back and I mean it was very sad you
1:35:58know obviously
1:36:00um I I haven't I you know I when we were
1:36:04in college oh she just got herself a
1:36:06little bit of breathing space didn't she
1:36:08she's just like oh look maybe maybe they
1:36:10are
1:36:12just asking me questions because I knew
1:36:17him maybe they maybe this is just a
1:36:20courtesy that they've brought me into
1:36:22this room little bit of calmness after
1:36:25that she finally got up the courage
1:36:28to
1:36:32address what could be an accusation she
1:36:36she's she's breached the thing of saying
1:36:39I I didn't have anything to do with it
1:36:41what is this all about someone said
1:36:43something about me and but it wasn't me
1:36:45and she's finally she's been avoiding
1:36:48doing that for ages and she's finally
1:36:50done it and the cop did a pretty good
1:36:52job of
1:36:54uh you know the investigator cop did a
1:36:56pretty good job of saying listen you
1:36:57know we just wanted to give you some
1:36:59privacy we're getting into some personal
1:37:01stuff here and we don't want the rumor
1:37:03mill being turned you know what that
1:37:05rumor mill does
1:37:09right uh and now she's all like you can
1:37:12just you can almost feel her take a
1:37:14breath right as well go in there and try
1:37:17and watch what are the answers to the
1:37:18question you know I didn't know that
1:37:20yeah so so we just we just want to
1:37:21afford you the most privacy and
1:37:22confidential we could no I appreciate
1:37:25like I said I mean this like I said it
1:37:27wasn't me and uh you can't prove a
1:37:31thing way back and I mean it was very
1:37:33sad you know obviously
1:37:36um but what Stephanie doesn't know is
1:37:39that recently she was leaving a shopping
1:37:42mall drinking
1:37:44a drink out of a paper cup with a straw
1:37:49and a cop was following her and as she
1:37:53discarded that paper cup and straw into
1:37:55a trash can the cop picked it up put it
1:37:59in an Evidence bag and ran a test of the
1:38:03DNA compared with the DNA that was found
1:38:05on the bite mark of the murder victim
1:38:0823 years
1:38:11ago and it came back a perfect match
1:38:14that that hasn't been introduced yet
1:38:16it's
1:38:17coming I I haven't I you know I when we
1:38:21were in college some of would go down to
1:38:24his house in San Diego I went down to
1:38:26his house with him you know um with with
1:38:29him I know I I'm trying to think of some
1:38:31other people that may have gone down is
1:38:32that where he grew up is down there yeah
1:38:34down in San Diego oh okay um I know his
1:38:36dad's was a professor at San Diego State
1:38:38I don't know if he's still is um I don't
1:38:42know what happened to his sister don't
1:38:43know what happened to his
1:38:45brother hey Ran uh sorry are we are we
1:38:51having problems with the stream tonight
1:38:53tonight guys does it keep dropping out
1:38:56or what let us know if you're having any

1:39:08retired by now he was I think older um
1:39:12even back then right um what John's dad
1:39:16he's got to be dead isn't he what do you
1:39:18mean retired you're about to
1:39:20retire and I I can't even tell you the
1:39:23last time I had any contact with any of
1:39:25them it's been so long did he tell you
1:39:27what happened like what he heard from
1:39:28the detectives or the police
1:39:31or you know what he may have
1:39:35um for some reason I'm thinking that I
1:39:39mean again this is
1:39:44like drugs or something I mean I think I
1:39:48faintly remember him mentioning
1:39:50something maybe about cocaine
1:39:54um that she was involved with that you
1:39:56know I don't know that he said she was
1:39:58involved or they thought she you know
1:40:00again it's been so long I you know he
1:40:03could have mentioned he could have told
1:40:04me the whole story of what happened and
1:40:07I mean like I said I'm faintly remember
1:40:09either between him or the flyer um that
1:40:13there was some kind of a
1:40:15burglary
1:40:17um you know let me ask you did the
1:40:20detectives ever reach out to you ever no
1:40:22no one's ever talked talk to me I don't
1:40:23think anybody ever talked to me about
1:40:25about him um it seems like well I I
1:40:30take I'm thinking that I did talk to a
1:40:35detective um
1:40:38god well what division was it in Van
1:40:43eyes and where was I
1:40:46working um
1:40:491986 I would have been working in deire
1:40:54you know I'm thinking that I did speak
1:40:56to somebody oh really I couldn't tell
1:40:58you who it was cuz it doesn't it doesn't
1:41:01say probably on the phone um would have
1:41:05been somebody in regards to this or just
1:41:07yeah uhhuh yeah
1:41:09um I don't even know if you said a name
1:41:12if I would remember it because I worked
1:41:13van ice for a while oh did yeah I worked
1:41:17um detectives Patrol no we're detectives
1:41:19uhhuh um when did I go to Van eyes
1:41:24I work devire till 88 then I went to D
1:41:28till
1:41:30'92 I worked twice at
1:41:32vanise um both as detective
1:41:39yeah sometime in the
1:41:4190s
1:41:45um yeah I I know before I busted my leg
1:41:48up I was there in 98 cuz that year
1:41:51sticks out because I had a really bad
1:41:53leg injury
1:41:55um and I was there prior to that but I
1:41:58couldn't tell you what year it was just
1:41:59a few years I made detective I think in
1:42:0493
1:42:0593 so um I was at Van eyes and then I
1:42:10went back and then I had a leg injury
1:42:12and then they transferred me to deire
1:42:13cuz I couldn't drive mm I couldn't drive
1:42:16very far with the my bad leg injury so
1:42:19um but yeah I I I think I talked to some
1:42:24um remember would you remember any of
1:42:26the conversation as far as what they
1:42:28were looking
1:42:30for couldn't say I mean they may have
1:42:33told me I said hey you know I went to
1:42:35school with him um I either they either
1:42:38somebody called me or I saw the fly I
1:42:40may have seen the flyer at that point
1:42:42and I called up if if someone's name was
1:42:44on the flyer I may have called to speak
1:42:45to them I said hey if there's anything I
1:42:47can do you know um call me this is where
1:42:51I work you know I went to uh you know uh
1:42:54school with them
1:42:58um couldn't say I couldn't tell you who
1:43:00it
1:43:01was but you do remember that that
1:43:03someone you think reached out to
1:43:05you you mean a detective yeah called you
1:43:08up and talked yeah or I called them one
1:43:11of the two yeah I you know I I remember
1:43:14talking to somebody
1:43:16but I'm thinking it was a
1:43:18man I'm sure there's probably more men
1:43:20back
1:43:21then bet
1:43:24um so again that's I mean that's really
1:43:28all I can remember about that
1:43:31yeah let me get back uh to as far as
1:43:35when you said that uh John was calling
1:43:38you to to see you and during that time
1:43:41you felt that he was was felt he was
1:43:43either seeing her was he engaged or
1:43:45married did you know could say remember
1:43:48you know I don't know uhhuh
1:43:51um well let's see my husband
1:43:53did it ever appear no no no that would
1:43:55have been Scott moved in
1:43:57'93 so that would have been you said 86
1:44:00or 85 or something Scott your only
1:44:02husband you've never been married no
1:44:04never been marri I got married in I
1:44:05think '96 well no I no I got married in
1:44:07'96 but he moved in in 93 mhm but uh
1:44:13during that time that you were seeing
1:44:14John uh you know was he acting kind of I
1:44:18know kind of squirrly or kind of
1:44:19sneaking around when he'd hook up with
1:44:21you or anything like oh he's a massive
1:44:23squirrel I can just tell by looking at
1:44:24him he's such a squirely guy he's like
1:44:27yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah John John John
1:44:31John John John and then you got with the
1:44:34you got with
1:44:36Stephanie after she murdered your wife
1:44:40and you had suspicions I mean what is
1:44:44going on
1:44:45John was it I I just don't know what to
1:44:48say to you John that to make you think
1:44:52hey you made yeah he probably was I
1:44:55mean I mean cuz from the impression I
1:44:57get is you've known him a long time well
1:44:59let's see from what met him in 78 no I I
1:45:03met him in school I started UCL in 78 um
1:45:06so you know him
1:45:08well during that period of time yeah I
1:45:11mean was he acting
1:45:13sruly you know I don't even remember
1:45:16where he was living then you know I well
1:45:20after I don't well let me ask you after
1:45:22he hooked up with uh mean if he was
1:45:24living on Rosco or wherever else he was
1:45:26living right well after he hooked up
1:45:28with uh with Sherry do you know uh where
1:45:32they were living no you asked me that
1:45:34already uhhuh and I said well obviously
1:45:36they were living in Van I's division
1:45:39yeah
1:45:40um I may have known I mean I you know
1:45:44again I you know did he ever give me the
1:45:46address maybe you know I don't remember
1:45:50I mean I don't know
1:45:53because the only reason I'm asking you
1:45:54again is because as we've been talking I
1:45:55know some stuff has come to you because
1:45:57you're like oh you know so that's why
1:46:00I'm asking if you ever been to the house
1:46:01and when you said van eyes
1:46:04division you know I'm
1:46:10just I'm sure he could have told me I
1:46:12mean he could have told me he could have
1:46:13told me where he lived
1:46:17um do you ever gone there I don't think
1:46:21I've ever gone there I what I'm saying I
1:46:23don't I don't want to say no I've never
1:46:25gone there and then you say oh I was at
1:46:27a party cuz I I I don't you know I don't
1:46:30think so yeah um like I said we've got
1:46:33these friends we have different we have
1:46:35parties um my house their house I I just
1:46:40don't think John ever came to again you
1:46:44know at one point because we we knew
1:46:47people from school together I knew
1:46:49different people he knew different
1:46:51people I knew people that he knew from
1:46:53his work um you know that lived in the
1:46:56valley
1:46:58um you
1:47:00know so as far as for social events or
1:47:02anything I mean
1:47:04it's I mean you're not sure if you ever
1:47:06been to the house
1:47:11cuz but it's safe to say that would have
1:47:13been the only time like for something
1:47:16social yeah if I went there for
1:47:18something social yeah I mean because I
1:47:20know you you went to talk to her
1:47:23at at the hospital uh regarding this
1:47:26issue with John to you know kind of like
1:47:29they you know what's going to happen
1:47:30here with this thing but with this ever
1:47:33absolutely Vivian that is exactly her
1:47:35kind of party followed up to her house
1:47:38when you went to talk except she's the
1:47:40only woman at the party and everyone
1:47:43else in attendance is a
1:47:49fireman to say hey you know what I I
1:47:52don't even even know that I knew where
1:47:53they live there there's not many khys
1:47:56because they all come in the same big
1:47:58red
1:48:01truck I you know that's what I'm saying
1:48:03I don't if I knew where they live and
1:48:05I'd been there if it was for something
1:48:07social i' I would I'm I'm and I can't
1:48:10see how yeah it was definitely something
1:48:12social it was definitely something
1:48:13social you you you could you could call
1:48:15it social and
1:48:18uh I I saw her face to face you know he
1:48:21lived on Rosco did I ever see her there
1:48:23the fireman hosed me
1:48:26down I don't know I mean I may have seen
1:48:29there this apartment on Rosco mhm I may
1:48:32have met her
1:48:34there you know I I mean but you didn't
1:48:37have any issues with her right I love
1:48:39how she acts like everything's a mystery
1:48:42it could have been Rosco it could have I
1:48:44may have met her there it could have
1:48:46happened we don't know it was a long
1:48:48time ago and we haven't checked our
1:48:50pictures so how how are we supposed to
1:48:54remember what happened a million years
1:48:56ago without checking pictures okay it
1:48:59could have been at rasco or the
1:49:03hospital you
1:49:05know no I mean you know obviously if you
1:49:09was she's majorly back to the
1:49:11uncomfortable stage here right she had
1:49:14that little tiny bit of breathing space
1:49:17where she was like oh this was a
1:49:20courtesy that's gone now
1:49:23let's just say it again she's getting
1:49:26all flustered and it's fascinating you
1:49:29know what's going to happen here with
1:49:30this thing but would this ever have
1:49:32followed up to her house when you went
1:49:33to talk to her to say hey you know what
1:49:35I I don't even know that I knew where
1:49:37they lived I you know that's what I'm
1:49:39saying I don't if I knew where they
1:49:41lived and I'd been there if it was for
1:49:43something social I I would I'm I'm and I
1:49:47can't see how many times I I saw her
1:49:48face to face you know he lived on Rosco
1:49:51did I ever see her there I don't know I
1:49:54mean I may have seen her at his
1:49:55apartment on Rosco mhm I may have met
1:49:59her

1:50:15um I can't say that we ever screamed or

1:51:14happened I

1:51:25the times I've seen you around in our
1:51:27office I'm crazy you know but you're

1:52:41know more I'm I'm a hyper person at work

1:52:46excited I you know um I I enjoy the job
1:52:50I've always enjoyed the job um well you
1:52:53got a good gig so you know um so you
1:52:57know I you know I don't know it's like
1:53:00like I said this stuff's been so long
1:53:02ago um you know I'm sure as soon as I
1:53:04walk out of here I'll go oh shoot I did
1:53:0725 things I'll remember um you know but
1:53:10you'll call us or I mean you'll just
1:53:11come over our desk and tell us I mean I
1:53:13don't know what else you need to know
1:53:14like I said you know we we knew friends
1:53:17together a lot of the friends that you
1:53:19know that we socialized in the dorms I
1:53:21would say I mean there was a group of us
1:53:24that um we were all really close I mean
1:53:28even this one guy I was thinking of you
1:53:29know um Diana Basta we were all really
1:53:32close I haven't talked to her in a
1:53:34million years um Diana Basta being a
1:53:37friend of you and John's or yeah we all
1:53:39lived on the dorms on the dorms together
1:53:41I don't know if she lived on the same we
1:53:43I'm trying to think I think I know John
1:53:45lived on arfer because his roommate was
1:53:47Dave Newman Dave Newman now is a big
1:53:50huge big shot whatever
1:53:53movie producer director something I
1:53:55don't know um and that was John's
1:53:56roommate yeah and then the guys who
1:53:58lived across from me um Jim jasal and
1:54:03Roy Sako Sako something like that Roy
1:54:08sakoo what is with her circle of
1:54:13friends what was that guy's name earlier
1:54:16Mike
1:54:17Baldrick Jim
1:54:20Sako Diana bastter
1:54:24schmeer the
1:54:26[ __ ] there's more there's
1:54:29more um they lived across from me um
1:54:32Diana
1:54:34Basta I don't know if she lived on our
1:54:37floor maybe she was the
1:54:38ra um she's 49 here
1:54:43uh um California Amy Diane
1:54:47Sherman um cuz I still I guess she could
1:54:50be 48 I don't know what her
1:54:53birthday is but she's born in
1:54:561960 and this is
1:54:582009 friends with Diane
1:55:00Sherman um not that I'm not friends with
1:55:02the other people I just don't see them
1:55:05um a g named
1:55:07SMA um
1:55:11Sally Kathleen you know so we we were
1:55:15all on the floor I mean some of them
1:55:16were athletes some of them weren't you
1:55:18know I said John played basketball his
1:55:20brother play apparently her birthday is
1:55:22May 4th she's a
1:55:25Taurus basketball I played basketball at
1:55:27UCLA for 2 years um one of the girls
1:55:30swam on the team one was on the crew
1:55:32team so we all did stuff together um and
1:55:34then I'd say after we all graduated um
1:55:37we went to weddings you know I went to
1:55:39weddings um uh but Sher wasn't part of
1:55:43this circle no I don't even know how he
1:55:47how he met her I don't even know where I
1:55:48mean I don't know where he met her from
1:55:50I don't even know he told me where he
1:55:51met her from I mean he may have told me
1:55:53I you know that's not ringing a bell um
1:55:58and there was lots I mean you know
1:55:59there's
1:56:00just there was other people that knew
1:56:02other people um you know that were
1:56:04friends of everybody's what the hell is
1:56:07she talking
1:56:09about John's roommate from college is a
1:56:12big movie producer I knew a guy a girl
1:56:16name a gal I know a gal named Shena and
1:56:20then there was Diana bastard there was
1:56:21two dians and we all lived on the 10th
1:56:24floor in uh
1:56:27Destra uh in the
1:56:30dorms uh I graduated in
1:56:3382 uh I think John was a couple of years
1:56:36older than me
1:56:38uh he he drove a
1:56:41270z my first car was a 1968 Chevy
1:56:48chevel
1:56:50um you know
1:56:53um I mean I don't know what else to tell
1:56:55you well one of the concerns I had is
1:56:57looking at some of the notes is uh some
1:56:59of sher's friends said that you and her
1:57:02were having a problem uh Janes world
1:57:05says metric's not familiar with this
1:57:07case so uh what was her motive okay real
1:57:11quick Jane
1:57:13um so this is Stephanie Lazareth and in
1:57:17college in like the early 80s she was
1:57:22having a
1:57:24relationship kind of Friends with
1:57:26Benefits relationship with a guy named
1:57:28John ruton um when they left College the
1:57:32relationship ended but Stephanie threw a
1:57:34surprise birthday party for John when he
1:57:37turned
1:57:3825 and found out that he was now engaged
1:57:41to a new woman called Sherry
1:57:43rasmusen and uh Stephanie Lazarus got
1:57:46really jealous and I think Jon was kind
1:57:49of engaged to Sherry but still sleeping
1:57:51with
1:57:52Stephanie here and there so it was all a
1:57:54bit confusing and then Stephanie started
1:57:57to threaten Sherry and say back off my
1:58:00man and all this sort of stuff and then
1:58:02went round to her apartment and uh shot
1:58:05her and bashed her face in with a gun
1:58:08and bit her and the case went cold and
1:58:11the cops just thought it was a burglary
1:58:12gone wrong because there was all this
1:58:14like DVD well not DVD players but VCRs
1:58:17and CD players stacked by the door and
1:58:20it went Cold Cold Case and and um later
1:58:24the DNA testing became more improved and
1:58:26they found a match to this lady who's a
1:58:29cop and uh was a cop back
1:58:32then and um yeah she's been she's gotten
1:58:36away with it for 23 years and now she's
1:58:39uh being interrogated about the motive
1:58:41so the motive
1:58:42was uh
1:58:45jealousy but it doesn't appear that she
1:58:47really wanted to like get back with John
1:58:50because I think they hooked up one
1:58:52they went to Hawaii Hawaii together 3
1:58:55years after the murder and then another
1:58:573 years passed and Stephanie met her
1:59:00current
1:59:01husband
1:59:03so I think it was more just punishment
1:59:07for hurt feeling
1:59:11really because of the John
1:59:16situation well number one I don't know
1:59:19no she graduated in ' 82 and joined the
1:59:24police force in 83 California Amy so in
1:59:28' 86 she'd been a A Beat cop patrol
1:59:31officer for three years
1:59:34already who her friends are um cuz again
1:59:38I don't I don't recall if he did tell me
1:59:41where he met
1:59:42her I don't know even who these friends
1:59:44are a problem like I said if I spoke to
1:59:48her I mean I'll go on as far in as a
1:59:50limb and I don't even want to to say I
1:59:52spoke to her five times cuz that's
1:59:53probably not even true I I I can't even
1:59:56remember um again did I meet him at her
2:00:00PL when he you know he lived on Rosco
2:00:01for I think quite a while but I couldn't
2:00:04tell you how long he lived on Rosco and
2:00:06the only reason I remember the place now
2:00:07is because it's like a huge dope dope
2:00:09place now where they you know it may
2:00:11have been back then but you know maybe
2:00:14we have know back then um I could have
2:00:17met her there I could have you
2:00:20know you know I don't even know that I
2:00:22met she really likes trying to keep her
2:00:25options open non-commital to the story

2:01:12if she had any dignity she'd just give
2:01:15it up at this stage I mean she's done
2:01:17she's doing a terrible job here I I find
2:01:20it hard to believe that she she's
2:01:23so unable to pull this off in in you
2:01:28know better than this but I guess after
2:01:31getting away with it for 23 years you
2:01:34all your guard goes down you know for
2:01:37the if if she'd been questions like
2:01:40this a month after it happened or six
2:01:44months or a couple of years maybe she'
2:01:47have been more prepared like okay maybe
2:01:49when if if this comes back to me I'm
2:01:51going to have to be like really on my
2:01:54game and have a convincing story an
2:01:57alibi some some stuff going on I'm going
2:01:59to have to be this is going to be in my
2:02:01mind I mean that the stress of that must
2:02:03have been with her for a while but after
2:02:0523 years it's like well I guess they're
2:02:08never going to come back to me about
2:02:10that murder that I did and never got
2:02:12caught for her guard has gone completely
2:02:15down and she's been she's been so caught
2:02:18by surprise here it's
2:02:20unbelievable with John was kind
2:02:23of I mean you've known each other for a
2:02:25lot of years yeah it was just kind of it
2:02:27was
2:02:30like but it doesn't seem to me from what
2:02:32you're telling me I mean we were never
2:02:33engaged I mean it wasn't like we were
2:02:35planning to get married um you know it
2:02:37was like it it
2:02:40was I don't know how to describe it I
2:02:43mean would you say there wasn't a lot of
2:02:45drama in this relationship oh no I don't
2:02:47think there was drama okay yeah I mean
2:02:49that's why I'm asking as far as what the
2:02:51friends are saying in regards to this
2:02:54you know the problems they're saying you
2:02:55were having with with
2:02:57Sher I mean it seems like the
2:02:59relationship is just going on an even
2:03:01plane that just I I that I don't have
2:03:03the recollection of that at all no no
2:03:06and cuz from what you're telling me is
2:03:07when you guys met at the
2:03:09hospital uh I mean you guys talked but
2:03:12it wasn't from what you recall
2:03:14confrontational I think so from either
2:03:16side no I I mean I'm trying to you know
2:03:20turn my memory back you know and I'm
2:03:23trying I can't even I can't even picture
2:03:25the you know picture the the
2:03:27conversation I mean I can't even picture

2:03:30mean at the hospital it never got to the
2:03:31point where people are going hey hey you
2:03:33know go to everybody go to your own

2:03:57so about you know ever going to her

2:04:05just if I met her ever at his apartment

2:04:20there I just can't can't say that I've

2:08:09cars and her face just explodes into
2:08:14spasms I mean it looks like she's on
2:08:16ecstasy it looks like she's on about
2:08:18four ecstasy tablets
2:08:22well yeah I mean do you remember what he
2:08:23what he
2:08:26drove well I know at one time he drove
2:08:28either a 2 240 or
2:08:31260Z any other cars that stand out of

2:08:45mind I don't know how long you drove
2:08:47that 240 or 260Z for um and the only
2:08:50reason I say that that is cuz I think I
2:08:53may have a picture of it um with him in

2:08:58um what kind of car did you have back

2:09:04of John in his car she probably has
2:09:06about 500 pictures of John in a

2:10:04something like that Tel and then I had
2:10:07my truck do you ever have any problems

2:10:11cars like what oh this is the other
2:10:15thing right is she used her own
2:10:19gunun to kill Sher right now obviously
2:10:22that gun had to disappear
2:10:25right because they can tell the bullets
2:10:28from the the barrel of the gun and say
2:10:31yeah that science says that that is the
2:10:34gun that shot the bullets that we found
2:10:36in sher's face so you're under arrest
2:10:40for murder so that gun had to go right
2:10:42how did she get rid of that gun well she
2:10:46faked her car being broken into and
2:10:49reported that her service
2:10:52weapon had been stolen and the cops are
2:10:54now bringing that up nice and slow right
2:10:57nice and slow did you ever have any
2:11:00problems with your cars like uh did they
2:11:05ever get
2:11:07vandalized or broken into was was
2:11:11anything ever stolen from those
2:11:14cars and like I don't think Stephanie
2:11:18gets it straight away when the question
2:11:21questions start closing in there's this
2:11:23real sense of the walls closing in with
2:11:25this line of questioning and Stephanie
2:11:27doesn't even notice at first right she's
2:11:30thinking back to that that 270z and John
2:11:34in the in the car you know by the
2:11:36airport on a
2:11:40date but uh let's go back let's just see
2:11:43those walls close in on
2:11:46Stephany and then I
2:11:49had I had some kind of a Toyota just any
2:11:53any Toyota a
2:11:59Toyota some kind of a Toyota mhm

2:12:41cars had ever been stolen no my cars

2:12:49into um none of that br into sure I mean
2:12:53we live in LA so that's common right
2:12:56yeah I had a gun stolen from my car that
2:12:58I reported what yeah it was my service

2:13:10um you know but no cars have ever been
2:13:17stolen how on well when tell me about
2:13:20this uh car get broken into well my car
2:13:23has been broken into several times oh

2:13:28or yeah now did you mention it let's
2:13:34see she's just seen she's just seen what
2:13:37the cop's doing and she knows because
2:13:40she's a cop she knows that that cop is
2:13:43sitting there with a report that says
2:13:46Stephanie Lazarus had her car broken
2:13:49into at this year and reported that a
2:13:51gun was
2:13:53stolen and of course that looks really
2:13:56bad
2:13:57right I had a gun that was stolen mhm I
2:14:01mean they could probably say from the
2:14:03bullets in sher's head what type of gun
2:14:06it was
2:14:10right and the report of her of the theft
2:14:15of her gun will say what it's going to
2:14:18be the same gun isn't it h I had other
2:14:21stuff that was stolen not your Duty gun
2:14:24was it no that's good um is it ever
2:14:28recovered oh it wasn't a Duty gun I
2:14:31don't know no I don't think so not that
2:14:33I know of never been notified no car has
2:14:36been broken
2:14:37into yeah several times where did that
2:14:40happen when your gun was
2:14:45taken yeah was it now you mention it it
2:14:49was back in80s
2:14:52six trying to

2:15:00um cuz my car was broken into in
2:15:06Ventura I think in Santa Monica I have
2:15:09relatives that live in Santa Monica and
2:15:11Venice um who lives there my uncle well
2:15:14I I had several uncles
2:15:18um several uncles They're All Dead
2:15:23again tangent family tangent yeah I have
2:15:26relatives in Santa Monica and uh Santa
2:15:29Barbara and
2:15:32Ventura yeah could have been Santa
2:15:34Monica um Venice my my cars broken into
2:15:38inventur before
2:15:41so is your mom still around or mhm yeah
2:15:45your dad yeah but I don't really have
2:15:48much of a relationship with my dad
2:15:52so I couldn't tell you where he lives if

2:15:58yeah couldn't tell

2:16:03at the case and you know we had read the
2:16:05notes as far as from U sher's friends
2:16:09saying you you guys had problems or
2:16:11words they got oh here we go this is
2:16:14going to be a bit of a reveal now he's
2:16:16going to go tell her what they know so
2:16:18far he it you know the reason we're
2:16:22asking you is look how attentive she is
2:16:25she's listening to every word of this
2:16:28right mentioned that an incident at her
2:16:31work had occurred and they've also told
2:16:34us that an incident at her house
2:16:38occurred you know what and this is at
2:16:40her house during the period of time that
2:16:42they're
2:16:44married that's just not sounding
2:16:46familiar at all I mean I you know what I
2:16:51that's just not again if someone says
2:16:53that I was at her house and I had an
2:16:55incident with
2:16:57her you know I that just doesn't sound I
2:17:00I you know was John there did John say
2:17:03this happened because and other people
2:17:04were there I just I don't recall I mean
2:17:08it just doesn't sound you know familiar
2:17:11and this is an incident where you showed
2:17:13up you weren't supposed to show up and
2:17:17things got heated at his house yeah
2:17:23I you know I that just doesn't sound
2:17:26familiar I

2:17:30familiar so not at all now you're saying
2:17:32not familiar cuz it's just something you
2:17:34remember or it's just well you know what
2:17:36I would have then I'd have to say I

2:20:37incidents in your life that have
2:20:39occurred I mean you'd recall those right
2:20:40I mean what like a use of force at work
2:20:44or car crash something you're involved
2:20:46in you'd be like yeah I remember you
2:20:47would think I would remember I mean I
2:20:48would think if it was something that
2:20:50crazy I mean I I can't say you say how
2:20:53many fights have you gotten into you
2:20:54know in your
2:20:56life you know I mean a few at work well
2:20:59fights at work are kind of different cuz
2:21:01we've all had uses of force or whatever
2:21:02but I didn't even have even a lot of
2:21:04those I right but if you're if you're
2:21:06actually you know I mean i' play like if
2:21:08if Dan and I got mad at each other and
2:21:09we threw blows in the squad room I mean
2:21:1120 years later I would remember it I
2:21:13mean I would think I would remember but
2:21:15that's that's what I'm saying that's not
2:21:17sounding familiar to me at all I mean
2:21:20let me ask you I mean throughout your
2:21:24life you know would you remember the
2:21:26number of fights you've been involved in
2:21:28and I don't mean kind of like a bump or
2:21:30something just a a physical fight where
2:21:32you everybody's hitting each other

2:21:37maybe I mean I can't say I've been in a
2:21:39lot you know I've played Sports yeah you
2:21:42know you get into scuffles there and um
2:21:46and you recall some of those right I
2:21:47mean just yeah I can recall some of them
2:21:50yeah yeah games get intense but like I
2:21:52said this you saying this this is just
2:21:54not ringing a bell I mean but you know I

2:21:59just that's just not ringing a bell to

2:23:19you're interrogating me about this I
2:23:21don't know what the [ __ ] where this is
2:23:23coming from but I'm not saying anything
2:23:26else without a lawyer present if you
2:23:28want to talk to me about this get me a
2:23:30lawyer in here to talk to me first cuz
2:23:34you know I want to help that you know
2:23:36I've been a cop for 26 years I've been a
2:23:38cop longer than both of you okay so I
2:23:41know that you've got me in here under
2:23:44false pretenses I don't like that I find
2:23:46that underhanded I want legal
2:23:49representation and that's it if you want
2:23:51to talk to me uh lawyer or I'm you know
2:23:54I'm walking out of here right now she
2:23:57should have said that 20 minutes ago

2:24:23that nature uh they did fingerprints and

2:24:34on going on 26 19
2:24:37so but 19 still long enough to be pretty
2:24:42[ __ ] good at your job
2:24:44huh you know as they processed
2:24:46everything they did the best they could
2:24:48I love how he says that as well cuz he
2:24:51says it like oh I'm less than you but
2:24:54not by much and I've been doing this for
2:24:5719 years do you really get much better
2:25:01over the next seven after 19 years I
2:25:05don't think so at that time and they
2:25:07looked at a lot of a lot of people and
2:25:09different things in this case and you're
2:25:11right I mean if you guys are claiming
2:25:12that I'm a suspect then you know I I got
2:25:15a problem with you hey yeah wake up
2:25:18Stephanie they're claiming you're a
2:25:19suspect they're about to reveal the DNA
2:25:22evidence that links you to the scene of
2:25:25the brutal murder along with all of the
2:25:27witness testimony that says that you
2:25:30came to the hospital where Sherry worked
2:25:32in an evening dress and threatened her
2:25:35life if she didn't stay away from John
2:25:38that's what they're about to reveal
2:25:40Stephanie wake up Stephanie you know
2:25:43with that okay okay so you know if
2:25:47you're if you're doing this as an
2:25:48interrogation you're saying hey I'm a
2:25:50suspect well now I got a problem with
2:25:52you know now you're accusing me of this
2:25:55is that what you're is that what you're
2:25:56saying we're trying to figure out what
2:25:58happened

2:26:19of you know how I knew knew him and now
2:26:21you're telling me that some somebody's
2:26:24saying that we had this big old fight
2:26:25and I don't even know what you're
2:26:26talking about um you know and I don't
2:26:29want to you know get in trouble for
2:26:30something that I didn't even do or
2:26:32you're saying I did something okay we
2:26:35understand I mean how would you guys
2:26:37like it if the tables were turned on you
2:26:39I understand no um no that's what we're
2:26:41telling you I mean you're free to go
2:26:42whenever you want if if this makes you
2:26:44uncomfortable and you want to you well
2:26:45now you're starting to make me
2:26:47uncomfortable the thing is I mean
2:26:49detectives did what they could at that
2:26:50time on the crime scene okay and the
2:26:52burglary thing you're talking about that
2:26:54is an angle that they looked at I go but
2:26:56now we're looking at everything else on
2:26:57the case cuz nobody was ever arrested on
2:26:59the case I I don't know that or not okay
2:27:05now what we'd like to do is yeah we
2:27:06searched the entire area of Rosco and
2:27:09doodo for a Mexican burglar and we found
2:27:13nothing we found nothing there was no
2:27:16Mexican and no
2:27:18burglar obviously you know about all the
2:27:20DNA stuff and things of the nature that
2:27:22you know gets done on cases now well

2:27:28don't know that that's true we we got
2:27:29real good snark coming out soon though

2:27:34spend some time on some different
2:27:36formats so if anyone would want to

2:34:45them are going to
2:34:50have a completely different view of her
2:34:54now not only that but also when she goes
2:34:59to jail she'll be going to jail as a cop

2:35:05jail and we know how fun that can be
2:35:09right feel the same way I just can't
2:35:12even believe it I mean it's just I mean

2:46:24day of March in the year 2012 juror

2:48:31had attacked another woman in the area
2:48:33were responsible for the crime Lazarus
2:48:36was recently connected to the
2:48:3723-year-old case through a DNA match of
