  1. 0:04My name is Muriel Medart and I am the
  2. 0:07co-founder and CEO of Optimum. Optimum
  3. 0:10is an idea built on the last two decades
  4. 0:13of research and development from the
  5. 0:15group I lead at MIT that I believe has
  6. 0:18the potential to redefine how we think
  7. 0:21about computing in a decentralized
  8. 0:23world. The main focus of my research
  9. 0:26these past two decades has been on
  10. 0:28determining how to enable highly
  11. 0:30performant, scalable, and resilient data
  12. 0:33encoding in a decentralized computing
  13. 0:36environment. This research led me to
  14. 0:39create a new approach to data coding
  15. 0:41called random linear network coding or
  16. 0:44RLNC. Data coding is the process of
  17. 0:48converting information from one format
  18. 0:50to another for efficient storage,
  19. 0:53transmission or processing. Data coding
  20. 0:56has been around for decades and there
  21. 0:58are many iterations of it being used in
  22. 1:00networks today. Random linear network
  23. 1:03coding is a modern advanced approach to
  24. 1:07data coding built specifically for
  25. 1:10decentralized computing. So how does it
  26. 1:13work?
  27. 1:18RLNC is like creating math puzzles with
  28. 1:21your data before sending it. Instead of
  29. 1:25sending original data packets directly,
  30. 1:28the sender mixes them together using
  31. 1:31random math equations. As these mixed
  32. 1:35packets travel through the network,
  33. 1:37other network nodes along the way
  34. 1:40further remix them with new equations.
  35. 1:43When the receiver gets enough of these
  36. 1:45mixed packets, they can solve the
  37. 1:47mathematical puzzle to recover the
  38. 1:50original data, even if some of the
  39. 1:52packets were lost along the way. This
  40. 1:55approach is more efficient than
  41. 1:57traditional methods because any
  42. 2:01collection of enough encoded packets can
  43. 2:03rebuild the original data regardless of
  44. 2:07which packets derive. The gains we can
  45. 2:10deliver to any network using this
  46. 2:12approach have no upper bound. So the
  47. 2:14improvement in performance can be
  48. 2:17exponential relative to the size of the
  49. 2:19network. Independent research from the
  50. 2:22Ethereum Foundation has shown using an
  51. 2:26RLNC based proof of concept a 20x
  52. 2:30bandwidth improvement over Ethereum. So
  53. 2:34how does this relate to Optimum? RLNC is
  54. 2:38the underlying technology powering
  55. 2:40Optimum in our quest to provide
  56. 2:42blockchains or decentralized computers
  57. 2:45with a key piece of infrastructure that
  58. 2:48is missing today.
  59. 2:54Memory. Memory is a key component of
  60. 2:57every computer on Earth. This is what
  61. 3:00enables computers to store, access, and
  62. 3:03update data efficiently so that the
  63. 3:05programs we can use run optimally. When
  64. 3:09we consider buying a new computer, one
  65. 3:11of the first criteria we look at is how
  66. 3:14much random access memory or RAM it has.
  67. 3:18In blockchains today, this memory layer
  68. 3:21is missing. There have been makeshift
  69. 3:23attempts to recreate memory like
  70. 3:26functions for blockchains, but they
  71. 3:28struggle at scale. And as we know, when
  72. 3:31you run out of memory with your
  73. 3:33computer, your programs suffer. There
  74. 3:36has been no performant, scalable, secure
  75. 3:39way to deliver an integrated memory bus
  76. 3:43and RAM to blockchains until RLNC and
  77. 3:48Optimum. Optimum is the memory layer for
  78. 3:51the world computer. Here is how we do
  79. 3:55it. Our first product is called Optimum
  80. 3:58P2P. Optimum P2P is a pub sub protocol
  81. 4:03that functions as a memory bus replacing
  82. 4:06outdated gossip networks with coding
  83. 4:09based propagation to reduce redundancy
  84. 4:12and boost throughput to ensure
  85. 4:14validators never miss rewards. In the
  86. 4:18future, we will launch Optimum DRAM, a
  87. 4:20decentralized RAM layer that ensures
  88. 4:23atomicity, consistency, and durability
  89. 4:27for fast ondemand data access, cutting
  90. 4:30costs for DAPs, DeFi, and validators.
  91. 4:34There is even more to come beyond these
  92. 4:36first two products, but we have to keep
  93. 4:39that under wraps for now. If you're a
  94. 4:41validator interested in trying out
  95. 4:43Optimum, please get in touch, read our
  96. 4:46docs, and join our community. We look
  97. 4:48forward to connecting with you.
