- 0:00you're going to lose sleep you'll doubt
- 0:02whether it'll work you'll stress to make
- 0:04ends meet you won't finish your to-do
- 0:06list you'll wonder whether you made the
- 0:08right call and have no way to know for
- 0:10yours this is what hard feels like and
- 0:13that's okay everything worth doing is
- 0:16hard and the more worth doing it is the
- 0:19harder it is the greater the payoff the
- 0:22greater the hardship if it's hard good
- 0:25it means no one else will do it more for
- 0:28you
- 0:30I think a lot of Entrepreneurship and
- 0:32even personal growth is training
- 0:34yourself on how you respond to
- 0:37hard because in the early days hard was
- 0:41ooh stop this isn't good I should I
- 0:43should this is a warning sign this is a
- 0:45red flag I should slow down or I should
- 0:46stop you know I should pivot but the
- 0:49more I think about it as a competitive
- 0:51landscape as I'm clear on what this path
- 0:54is supposed to look like and these rocks
- 0:56and these dragons are things that I'm
- 0:57going to have to slay along the way to
- 1:00get the princess or get the
- 1:02treasure I get happier about the harder
- 1:04it is because I know that no one else
- 1:06will follow it's a selection effect and
- 1:09I think if you can if you can shift from
- 1:11this is hard to no one else will be able
- 1:14to do this then it it's it flips from
- 1:16being this thing that you're like oh
- 1:17poor me to oh poor everyone else who's
- 1:19going to have to [ __ ] try and I think
- 1:21that is so much more motivating as a
- 1:22frame for the exact same circumstance
- 1:25yeah that's
- 1:26awesome I was
- 1:28thinking a lot about the lonely chapter
- 1:31that we talked about the last time that
- 1:32was the best most powerful idea I think
- 1:34that we came up with
- 1:37and if you
- 1:40see there basically being no shortcuts
- 1:43toward getting the thing that you want
- 1:45there are ways to be more and less
- 1:46efficient there are ways to do things
- 1:48with more and less of a positive
- 1:50disposition which can actually make the
- 1:51journey feel an awful lot easier but
- 1:54ultimately if you assume that largely
- 1:56everyone needs to go through the same
- 1:57challenges that you're going through
- 2:01every single difficult thing that you do
- 2:03is kind of like a massive wall that you
- 2:05need to get over and you go wow [ __ ] I'm
- 2:08so glad that I've got over that wall and
- 2:11think about how many people are going to
- 2:12be selected out it's like the Hunger
- 2:14Games you know think about how many
- 2:16other people are going to fall that wall
- 2:20there people only root for people who
- 2:22don't need
- 2:24it like the amount of times when I was
- 2:27on my lonely path where I was too
- 2:31different from the friends that I had
- 2:33but not successful enough to be friends
- 2:34with the people that I wanted to be
- 2:35friends
- 2:39with that's when that's when you want
- 2:42people to root for you that's when you
- 2:44want people to support you once you've
- 2:46already won people are like he's amazing
- 2:49he's so good but like that's the time
- 2:51when you need it the least and
- 2:55so you always have to be the person who
- 2:57roots for you before everyone else does
- 3:00and it's usually a single clap in the
- 3:03auditorium for a very long period of
- 3:06time it is a slow clap that's just you
- 3:09rooting for you um and that visual I
- 3:13think is one that you can kind of take
- 3:15because it
- 3:18is people struggle to do things
- 3:21alone and the path of the exceptional
- 3:25person is one of an exception which
- 3:27means that you are not with other people
- 3:30and rather than fighting that or boning
- 3:33it see it as an indicator that you're on
- 3:37the right path because if everyone else
- 3:39were cheering you on then it means
- 3:41you're not in the right place because it
- 3:42means you're just like everyone else and
- 3:44that's not where you want to
- 3:45be it's an interesting Paradox
- 3:50that the energy it requires to start
- 3:53doing something is way more than the
- 3:55energy required to continue doing the
- 3:57thing and that the beginning of doing
- 4:00anything results in the lowest amount of
- 4:02reward both internal and external than
- 4:05when you've been doing it for ages so I
- 4:07think about this a lot with the show
- 4:09that there was this stat that Spotify
- 4:11told us 85% of the listeners of this
- 4:14show found this in
- 4:162023 right and I thought at the end of
- 4:192022 remembering at that point I'd been
- 4:21on Rogan we were at like 650k we've got
- 4:24you know we've been doing 550 600
- 4:27episodes deep like I'm I've got I've
- 4:29done the thing like this is this is me
- 4:31doing if this isn't [ __ ] doing the
- 4:32thing I've moved to Austin Texas I've
- 4:33got an 01 Visa I've got like the all the
- 4:35rest of the stuff Jordan Peterson's been
- 4:37on twice you've been
- 4:39on and yet
- 4:42the what everything up until that point
- 4:49is two months of
- 4:51growth yeah I mean we made we made more
- 4:53money for just from a revenue
- 4:55perspective we made more money and more
- 4:56subs in one month December of last year
- 4:59than we did in the entire first three
- 5:00and a half years of the show so it's
- 5:03this odd Paradox and one of the things
- 5:06that you need to ensure I've had this
- 5:08idea about protect your passion at all
- 5:10costs because if you if you begin to
- 5:13hate the thing that you do you
- 5:14negatively change your trajectory and
- 5:16that means that at the time when you can
- 5:18benefit the most by every single unit of
- 5:21work which is the later that you go
- 5:22presuming that you continue to hit that
- 5:24Upp trajectory if you've completely
- 5:26killed any passion or desire to do the
- 5:28work in the early stages because
- 5:31you've you've not protected it
- 5:33appropriately that can be by focusing on
- 5:36the wrong things by not rewarding
- 5:37yourself by not building it with people
- 5:38that care about you by you know just not
- 5:41not celebrating when you hit Milestones
- 5:42all of the things that actually help to
- 5:44keep you going being a
- 5:46character by the time that you get to
- 5:48the stage where each unit of effort
- 5:49allows you to gain a thousand or a
- 5:52million of each of the things that it
- 5:53would have done at the very beginning
- 5:55you've inverted the uh like the passion
- 5:59equation
- 6:00takes way more energy to start a thing
- 6:02than to continue doing a thing and yet
- 6:04in the beginning the rewards are way
- 6:06lower than they are at the end but if
- 6:08you don't protect your passion your
- 6:09motivation is at its lowest when you are
- 6:11at your highest amount of efficiency in
- 6:13terms of returning your time put in I
- 6:16think a hopeful message that anyone can
- 6:18think about who's about who's in that
- 6:20hard period or in that start period is
- 6:23that it won't get harder like this is
- 6:28the hardest part
- 6:29and so if you can just make it through
- 6:31this everything else is downhill it's
- 6:34not that the things that you're the
- 6:35dragons are going to slay aren't going
- 6:36to get bigger they are but you become so
- 6:38much more equipped to slay them back and
- 6:40you have so many more allies you have
- 6:42people in the stands cheering for you
- 6:43you have the audience you have all of
- 6:45these other things that are behind you
- 6:46but in the beginning it's just you with
- 6:48a stick against a bear and arguably that
- 6:52fight is a harder fight to win than
- 6:55beating a dragon when you have a nuclear
- 6:57bomb and Six Nations behind you and so
- 6:59it's not even like the the size of the
- 7:01hardship it's just also the resources
- 7:03and how few of them you have and how so
- 7:06much of the beginning is literally
- 7:07burning the one thing you have which is
- 7:09time because you have no leverage you
- 7:11don't have the money to pay other people
- 7:12to help you you don't have the resources
- 7:14to go like get someone to to you no one
- 7:17can learn it for you it's like there's a
- 7:19lot of the things that that we care
- 7:21about a lot like no one can work out for
- 7:23you doesn't matter how much money you
- 7:24have no one can learn skills for you and
- 7:26so in the early days like it feels so
- 7:29painful cuz you're like you look around
- 7:30to see who can help you and then you're
- 7:32like [ __ ] it's me again and I think
- 7:35getting comfortable with the idea that
- 7:36each of these things kind of like Slum
- 7:38Dog Millionaire if you've seen that
- 7:40movie where he I'll give you the tldr he
- 7:43goes through his entire life of
- 7:44Randomness and he gets on Who Wants To
- 7:45Be A Millionaire version in India and
- 7:48has 12 questions to make a million
- 7:49dollars and from only 12 random
- 7:52experiences in his life that seemed
- 7:53meaningless at the time was he able to
- 7:55answer all of the questions and then
- 7:56ultimately win the skills that you
- 7:59develop along the way like Steve Jobs
- 8:01learning calligraphy that then became
- 8:03Apple fonts that you know transformed
- 8:05how we
- 8:06type those early days that little trench
- 8:08winning in the
- 8:10weeds often times gives you these huge
- 8:12advantages later on because you have
- 8:14more context than anyone else and so
- 8:15rather than lament them and hate the
- 8:19fact that you're going through it
- 8:21remembering that these will be arrows
- 8:22that you put in the quiver that you're
- 8:24going to be using to slay the future
- 8:25bigger dragons and
- 8:28so
- 8:30expecting it to be easy is what makes it
- 8:32much harder than it ever
- 8:35is I've always loved earning my stripes
- 8:39with the things that I've done whether
- 8:41it was with nlife or running the podcast
- 8:43or doing whatever and I
- 8:46think there's like a degree of nobility
- 8:48to it but functionally that's kind of
- 8:50that's just like it's a nothing like
- 8:52what the where does the was the nobility
- 8:54but I think the reason that you can feel
- 8:56Noble about it and the reason that it
- 8:58gives you a positive reward is you know
- 9:02that you understand every single inch of
- 9:06the things and that if you want to hold
- 9:08a conversation we went out for dinner
- 9:10with our new CFO and and accounts people
- 9:13on Saturday they said you ask a lot of
- 9:16questions most people don't ask very
- 9:18many questions and I also don't care at
- 9:23all about accounts really like I'm not
- 9:25doing this for money but they said you
- 9:28ask a lot of questions it's like well I
- 9:30don't ever really want to walk into a
- 9:31room and not be able to hold my own at
- 9:34least just
- 9:35competently if it's to do with something
- 9:37that I care about the same thing goes
- 9:39for this like I I started to learn about
- 9:42focal lengths and frame rates and
- 9:44negative Phill reverse contrast lighting
- 9:46and then sure enough two years after we
- 9:48started doing it a bunch of different I
- 9:50sent you the Instagram thing like this
- 9:52really awesome film Instagram that I've
- 9:54been following for ages picked us up for
- 9:56what we were doing and gave us props
- 9:59independent of the talk thing which is
- 10:02fundamentally what we're here for and we
- 10:03created this entire new industry of like
- 10:06cinematic podcasting which was
- 10:08recognized by as far as I'm aware like
- 10:10the best cinematic it's called film
- 10:14lights at film lights people can go and
- 10:15see it on Instagram like the best
- 10:18decoder and analyzer of cinematography
- 10:22and two years ago when we started I
- 10:23remember thinking [ __ ] like I love the
- 10:25way that they've broken down what
- 10:26happens in adastra oh my God the whole
- 10:27thing was shot on 35 Mill each different
- 10:29scene's got two pairings of colors and
- 10:31stuff like that and then but the reason
- 10:34that we were able to get there at least
- 10:35in some part is I can have a
- 10:36conversation with people so each of the
- 10:39things that you do when you not only win
- 10:41in the weeds but live in the weeds then
- 10:44allows you Downstream from that to see
- 10:45the things that other people aren't
- 10:48seeing there's a quote that I love from
- 10:50Dr cash I'll probably butcher it
- 10:52but
- 10:54experts have more ways to win than
- 10:58beginners do and so if an expert goes
- 11:02into any setting that they're expert in
- 11:04they have so many faster feedback loops
- 11:07that reward them in the moment before
- 11:08the ultimate outcome so if you're a
- 11:10master video editor there's so many
- 11:12things that you can do that while
- 11:13editing you make one change and then it
- 11:14looks right you have a positive feedback
- 11:16loop and so I think when you're on the
- 11:19start path you can't look at the outcome
- 11:22as The only positive because you will
- 11:23never make it and so the positive frame
- 11:26that I've always used is sure you can
- 11:28have the external on of like I like
- 11:30thinking about my first videos had like
- 11:3213 views and I'm like well if I had an
- 11:34audience of 13 people I used to spend
- 11:35years pitching you know weight loss
- 11:37stuff to rims of 13 and that was fine
- 11:39and so thinking about that way was
- 11:40helpful but the the most helpful frame
- 11:44was thinking about who I was becoming as
- 11:47the asset that I was building so in real
- 11:49time whenever I finished a Long Day's
- 11:52Work I was becoming more like the type
- 11:54of person who could work for 5 years
- 11:56without reward and that would be part of
- 11:59the story I would someday tell and some
- 12:01some of the biggest reinforces I've had
- 12:03in my life has been futurecasting the
- 12:05story that I would tell about the shitty
- 12:07period that I was in like I remember
- 12:09when I was sleeping on the floor at my
- 12:10gym because I didn't have enough money
- 12:11for two rents and I was like I will
- 12:13[ __ ] tell this story and when I lost
- 12:15everything for the first time I like I
- 12:18have the screenshot of the bank account
- 12:19like when I show it people are like oh
- 12:21look there's that thing but they forget
- 12:22that there was a person who
- 12:23screenshotted it to be like this won't
- 12:25[ __ ] happen again and I think think
- 12:29having a larger Narrative of where
- 12:31you're ultimately going one gives you
- 12:32the vision of where you're like the ru
- 12:35like knows where he's going but it
- 12:38allows the dragons that you have to slay
- 12:41along the way the hard things that you
- 12:42have to overcome to feed into the larger
- 12:45Narrative of who of the story that
- 12:47you'll someday tell and so like no one
- 12:49ever tells stories about the hero who
- 12:51made it all happen immediately and had
- 12:53no hardships no one cares right like
- 12:55okay you were born to a billionaire is
- 12:57there a story there not not really but
- 13:00everyone loves the story because we can
- 13:01see ourselves in the character and how
- 13:03much we hope to be like them and it's
- 13:07the being like them not the having what
- 13:08they have that we usually like and so
- 13:11reframing ourselves as the hero of that
- 13:14narrative in my harder times was what
- 13:17really got me through that and
- 13:20thinking I will tell this story someday
- 13:22have you heard Rogan talk about the be
- 13:24the hero of your own story thing M oh
- 13:26dude it's is old now I think this is
- 13:29maybe even 10 years old maybe 10 years
- 13:30old um and he's in one of his old he's
- 13:34in the LA podcast studio and he says
- 13:38imagine that you're in a movie and
- 13:40imagine the movie begins now and you're
- 13:43the hero of the movie yeah what would
- 13:45that guy do
- 13:47yeah what would that guy do right now
- 13:50yeah because you
- 13:52are I just got into a business um so
- 13:56actually just made the investment in
- 13:58school um and I was talking to Sam the
- 14:01founder and I said what sim sam Sim
- 14:05what's Sim Sim that's the way he says
- 14:07his own yeah um and I was and I was
- 14:10talking to him and I said I want to give
- 14:12you the single easiest razor to predict
- 14:14my behavior and I said whatever will be
- 14:18the most epic story is the thing that I
- 14:20will most likely
- 14:22do and so often times the most epic
- 14:24story is not the shortest outcome to
- 14:27Victory it's the long Saga that results
- 14:30in this big thing later eventually and I
- 14:33was like if you ever want to know if
- 14:35you're like I'm not sure what he's going
- 14:36to do in this situation just wonder what
- 14:38the most epic story to tell would be and
- 14:41that's usually what I will do
- 14:44and I don't know if that's
- 14:45self-aggrandizing but that's that's
- 14:48genuinely my Razor for even making the
- 14:51like the big decisions about okay I'm
- 14:53going to sell gym launch I'm going to
- 14:55I'm going to marry Lea I'm going to slum
- 14:58it and live at the gym I'm going to fly
- 15:00around and do turnarounds I'm going to
- 15:01start this whole idea of a media company
- 15:04that just gives exclusively like how do
- 15:07like how do I put all these together
- 15:08it's like well what would be the most
- 15:09epic story and I thought of this idea of
- 15:11just like when I think about who that
- 15:12story I want to tell is is this
- 15:15billionaire that documented the entire
- 15:17thing the whole way and just gave
- 15:21because I always thought I was like I
- 15:22wish that Elon Musk and and Warren
- 15:24Buffett and all these guys would have
- 15:26like and Jeff basos like would have just
- 15:27like I would love to have seen
- 15:291997 Amazon content and a lot of the
- 15:34content in terms of like it it's getting
- 15:36five views it's like it's okay because
- 15:38when we make it they're going to come
- 15:39back and watch this so I don't need them
- 15:41to watch it today I want them to know
- 15:43that it's here when I do and I think
- 15:46that got me out of the the loop of it I
- 15:49have to win right now and then every one
- 15:51of them is just dropping uh a kernel or
- 15:54a bread for future meat to refer back to
- 15:56we'll get back to talking to Alex in one
- 15:57minute but first I need to tell you
