- 0:07hold it close and wait wherever the
- 0:09journey takes them we want to thank all
- 0:12of you who've gathered to watch her
- 0:14story some of it is harrowing some of it
- 0:16will make you simply outraged especially
- 0:19when you see the times law enforcement
- 0:21could have saved her and did not and at
- 0:24the Predators who defy understanding but
- 0:28in the end JC Dugard would find a way to
- 0:31save herself with a light no one could
- 0:33extinguish holding on to Hope a mother
- 0:37who would never let go and some caring
- 0:39and observant strangers who would make
- 0:41it possible one day for her to call her
- 0:44mother and say I am alive I'm coming
- 0:48home she was a little girl with a name
- 0:51right out of a story book JC Lee Dugard
- 0:54age 11 years old hello a girl who loved
- 0:58her mom her little sister a cat named
- 1:01monkey and school and books and stories
- 1:03and by holding on to the memory of
- 1:05everything she love survived and would
- 1:08Triumph after a battle in a monstrous
- 1:11backyard where a convicted sex offender
- 1:13LED out of prison Philip guito and his
- 1:16wife Nancy kidnapped her handcuffed her
- 1:19imprisoned her had her give birth
- 1:21outside and over and over again the
- 1:24justice system would fail her for 18
- 1:28years she was forbidden to say her own
- 1:30name so this is how her book a stolen
- 1:33Life Begins let's get one thing straight
- 1:36my name is JC Lee Dugard I was kidnapped
- 1:39by a stranger at age 11 and I want
- 1:42Philip gero to know that I no longer
- 1:44have to keep his secret I was happy she
- 1:47is 31 years old she looks impossibly
- 1:50young I know I was worried about I wear
- 1:53heel she is also someone who laughs a
- 1:56lot and has Delight in ordinary things
- 1:59on ordinary days oh my I do Drive I
- 2:04drive very
- 2:05safely you would never know what she
- 2:08survived oh my pine cone unless you
- 2:10notice how her face changes when she
- 2:12speaks of the past and the charm around
- 2:15her neck it's a pine cone back then it
- 2:17was the last thing I touched you know
- 2:20the last grip on me now it's it's a
- 2:25symbol of Hope and New Beginning
- 2:30me
- 2:32and
- 2:34that there is life after something
- 2:37tragic and tonight she says this is what
- 2:40she wants to do she will not speak of
- 2:42every detail she has written in her book
- 2:44but lessons of Hope and survival and
- 2:47what it meant to her to have a mother
- 2:49who would never let go it is June 10th
- 2:531991 JC Dugard wakes up in this house in
- 2:56Lake Tahoe California where her family's
- 2:58moved because it's a safe place to live
- 3:01she's in the fifth grade and remembers
- 3:03worrying about the field trip coming up
- 3:05because she's so shy remembers dressing
- 3:08in her favorite all pink outfit and she
- 3:11remembers the mom she absolutely Ador
- 3:13had to leave early for her work as a typ
- 3:15Setter at a print house and didn't keep
- 3:17a promise she said that she'd give me a
- 3:19kiss goodbye she didn't I wasn't mad I
- 3:23just you know thought I'd catch her when
- 3:25I got home you know tell her you got to
- 3:28give me a kiss next time you know
- 3:31she also remembers there was something
- 3:33she had wanted to ask her mom wanted to
- 3:35ask my mom if I could shave for the
- 3:40field trip you know shave your legs yeah
- 3:43big question want to be embarrassed yeah
- 3:46yeah didn't want to be embarrassed so
- 3:49that was the big question on my mind she
- 3:54walks up the hill from the house to
- 3:55catch the school bus the way her mother
- 3:57taught her looking out for traffic
- 3:59walked up the side of the hill I was the
- 4:01safe way to go against traffic and um
- 4:05halfway
- 4:08up my world changed in an
- 4:12instant I thought oh somebody's looking
- 4:15for directions a gray car pulls up a man
- 4:18rolls down the window cuz what else
- 4:20would it be and his hand shoots out and
- 4:24I just feel numb my whole body is tingly
- 4:27I don't know what it's from
- 4:30I fall back in the bushes she had been
- 4:32Paralyzed by a stun gun I lost control
- 4:35of my bladder I wasn't even embarrassed
- 4:38no time to be embarrassed on the ground
- 4:41the sharp edges of a pine cone are the
- 4:44last thing she touches before she comes
- 4:46to face down on the floor in the back
- 4:49seat of a car I remember my throat felt
- 4:52very dry and Scratchy and like I had
- 4:55been screaming but I don't remember
- 4:57screaming The Man Behind The Wheel is
- 4:59Philip guito a convicted sex offender
- 5:02supposedly monitored by parole officers
- 5:05and doctors holding her down on the
- 5:07floor as his wife Nancy the district
- 5:09attorney believes Nancy scouted this
- 5:12little girl for her husband as a prize
- 5:15did they say anything did you hear
- 5:16anything no not at first after we were
- 5:19driving for a while I heard the driver
- 5:22say I can't believe we got away with it
- 5:25and he started laughing I think I
- 5:27blacked out again or something it was
- 5:29like
- 5:32the most horrible moment of your
- 5:36life times
- 5:3810 120 M later the car stops in front of
- 5:42this house on a neighborhood street
- 5:45Dorito tells her to be quiet I said you
- 5:47know I think it's probably one of the
- 5:49only things I said was my family doesn't
- 5:53have a lot of money they can't pay the
- 5:54ransom that's what I kidnap as Ransom
- 5:57right yeah
- 6:00no not
- 6:02always he is 40 years old 6' 4 in tall
- 6:06she is 11 4' 6 80 lb he takes away the
- 6:12pink clothes she dressed in that morning
- 6:15the only thing she has left is a little
- 6:17ring shaped like a butterfly she will
- 6:19hide from him for 18 years blanket over
- 6:22her head he walks her through a small
- 6:24area of grass toward a fence where an
- 6:26opening is concealed by a tarp and
- 6:28hidden behind the fence deranged
- 6:30collection of sheds and storage units
- 6:32which the people monitoring gito would
- 6:35not search one of them tiny completely
- 6:39soundproof he leads her inside and takes
- 6:41out handcuffs said that they there were
- 6:44the fuzzy kind so they wouldn't hurt as
- 6:48bad whatever behind your back yeah um
- 6:52there was a pallet on the floor then he
- 6:55said he'd be back
- 6:57later and he shut
- 7:00the studio or the soundproof door and
- 7:02then the other door with the lock you
- 7:05heard that that lock yeah I can still
- 7:08hear it consciously or when I'm awake
- 7:13get some sounds and smells and this
- 7:16don't leave you he warns her there are
- 7:18dogs outside Dobermans they'll attack if
- 7:21she tries to escape she notices there's
- 7:24one window covered with bars and a towel
- 7:27he leaves at one point you write you get
- 7:32up and you take your teeth and you pull
- 7:34a towel off I wanted to see where I was
- 7:37yeah I couldn't use my hands there was
- 7:41just weeds and some kind of fence naked
- 7:47in handcuffs she drifts in and out of
- 7:49sleep crying I didn't really want to
- 7:52because then you can't wipe them away
- 7:55you know then you get all sticky
- 7:57and you know I mean sounds awful but you
- 8:01know I tried not to cry because
- 8:04it I couldn't wipe them away
- 8:07or you know and then they get itchy and
- 8:10at one point she made a note to remember
- 8:13the sound of the train so it would help
- 8:15her mom find her then later it was just
- 8:18listening to lawn mowers
- 8:21and airplanes
- 8:25anything for human contact I guess I L
- 8:29so lonely I I
- 8:32didn't I felt so alone have you seen JC
- 8:35Lee Dugard and 12 M away the mother who
- 8:39loves her and will never give up goes on
- 8:42television to make her first plea she
- 8:45pretty young innocent child friends have
- 8:48been searching all day and evening
- 8:51police started searching the
- 8:52neighborhood police set up a roadblock
- 8:54and go door too her classmates are out
- 8:56in the streets holding up signs and it's
- 8:59time that she comes home and she has
- 9:01written that all alone that night she
- 9:04decided to cling to something that would
- 9:06sustain her there is Moonlight streaming
- 9:09through the towel it makes her think of
- 9:11her mother we would always sit on the
- 9:13porch
- 9:15and we would debate whether the full
- 9:19moon or the crescent moon was the better
- 9:22Moon I always liked the full moon and
- 9:26she liked the crescent
- 9:32and just always made me think of her do
- 9:35you remember the song you and your mom
- 9:37sign looking at the
- 9:40moon I you are the moon How does it go
- 9:45forget I love the moon and the moon sees
- 9:48me I see the moon and the moon sees me
- 9:52God bless the moon and God bless me
