  1. 0:00this video has been another popular
  2. 0:01request in the comment section how do I
  3. 0:04develop my falsetto or my head voice how
  4. 0:07do I know whether I'm in head voice or
  5. 0:09falsetto what's the difference between
  6. 0:12those and pursuing mixed voice all great
  7. 0:16questions and if you search YouTube or
  8. 0:18search the internet for answers to those
  9. 0:20questions you get a lot of range so in
  10. 0:24this video I'm going to show you and let
  11. 0:28you hear the differences between mixed
  12. 0:32voice falsetto head voice and if you are
  13. 0:38doing some of the same sounds that I'm
  14. 0:40doing you'll be able to tell what the
  15. 0:43difference is in your own voice then
  16. 0:45we're going to work on applying them
  17. 0:49developing them and being artistic with
  18. 0:52them and as I've said in lots of other
  19. 0:54videos on this channel
  20. 0:55knowing the terms knowing that you're
  21. 0:57using falsetto versus head voice isn't
  22. 1:00really that important what's really
  23. 1:03important is that we understand how to
  24. 1:05use our voice to express the kind of
  25. 1:10emotion and kind of dynamic that we want
  26. 1:12to express and in this case we're going
  27. 1:14to dive into three factors or three
  28. 1:15areas of our voice closure cord closure
  29. 1:19air flow and positioning we're gonna try
  30. 1:23to blend all three mix falsetto head
  31. 1:28voice and not say that we have to be
  32. 1:31classified as doing one or the other but
  33. 1:34rather learning how to bridge the gap
  34. 1:38learning how to be sensitive to the feel
  35. 1:40of our vocal cord positioning and
  36. 1:43closure and air flow so that we can be
  37. 1:46as artistic as possible
  38. 1:48[Music]
  39. 2:08returned
  40. 2:10[Music]
  41. 2:14from bridges burn
  42. 2:16[Laughter]
  43. 2:18[Music]
  44. 2:28[Music]
  45. 2:37before we go any further a lot of the
  46. 2:39stuff that I'm gonna be working with in
  47. 2:40this video assumes that you already
  48. 2:42understand the basics of breath support
  49. 2:44you understand where to get your power
  50. 2:47from when you sing and you have some
  51. 2:50experience with singing in other than
  52. 2:53chest voice if you want to take your
  53. 2:56voice further and develop a solid
  54. 2:58foundation for the things that I just
  55. 3:00mentioned be sure to click the link
  56. 3:02below and join my free vocal course so
  57. 3:05as I said earlier we're going to look at
  58. 3:06three components in depth as far as how
  59. 3:08they relate to different types of voices
  60. 3:10and we're gonna blur the lines between
  61. 3:14all of them so if I just hold a note ah
  62. 3:20like that ah in my chest resonance
  63. 3:24that's where we'll start
  64. 3:27I am using a medium amount of airflow
  65. 3:30and I have good cord closure ah versus
  66. 3:40I'm using the same amount of airflow but
  67. 3:43the closure is not as constant so it
  68. 3:45sounds airier raspier
  69. 3:56now if I do that same thing in my
  70. 4:00falsetto or my head voice my different
  71. 4:03vocal positioning where my cords are
  72. 4:06longer they're stretched out a bit
  73. 4:08I can moderate airflow I can learn to
  74. 4:14moderate airflow the same way
  75. 4:21there's good closure even though my
  76. 4:24cords are longer and there's the same
  77. 4:27note where I am leaving my cords lest
  78. 4:32less closed and a little bit floppier
  79. 4:36allowing more air through now a lot of
  80. 4:46people and I think this is a good way to
  81. 4:48differentiate a lot of people will
  82. 4:50define what I just did
  83. 4:52as falsetto and as head voice head voice
  84. 4:59is more powerful more coordinated more
  85. 5:05more pure less air is happening versus
  86. 5:11falsetto
  87. 5:21but here's where I think it doesn't
  88. 5:22matter so much whether we're saying one
  89. 5:25is one or the other we can do that same
  90. 5:27thing in our chest resonance we can
  91. 5:35manage closure and airflow in any one of
  92. 5:38our vocal positions it's really about
  93. 5:41identifying how to do each one in both
  94. 5:45areas and then using them in a way that
  95. 5:49fits what we're trying to do so what we
  96. 5:52want to do first
  97. 5:53the oftentimes the easier thing to do
  98. 5:56when we're getting up into of those
  99. 5:58higher thinner notes that resonance that
  100. 6:02that transfers up here we fill it back
  101. 6:06and in our head more as opposed to
  102. 6:07vibrating in our chest we'll call that
  103. 6:10the head resonance it's easier to do
  104. 6:13that with less cord closure so we want
  105. 6:19to get there by whispering like this we
  106. 6:22don't always per a lot but and then
  107. 6:25introduce a little bit of phonation
  108. 6:26introduce a little bit of actual tone in
  109. 6:29there in our chest resonance hi hi this
  110. 6:35is a medium whisper and then let's
  111. 6:38rather than going for any sort of pitch
  112. 6:40let's go higher and iron are like this
  113. 6:42we're not trying to sing a particular
  114. 6:44note but we're leaving our chords kind
  115. 6:48of open like we're hoarse like we're
  116. 6:51sort of trying to whisper and we're
  117. 6:53going higher higher higher higher that
  118. 6:57would be a full set Oh sound now let's
  119. 7:01try to close them off just like we do
  120. 7:04here oh no I'm gonna talk like Mickey
  121. 7:10Mouse now some people would call this
  122. 7:12falsetto - that's fine
  123. 7:13oh hi Mickey has good closure right
  124. 7:18Mickey is not hey oh no he's
  125. 7:25Oh No so experimenting with the
  126. 7:29different fields there we're letting our
  127. 7:31cords pass more air versus having them
  128. 7:35closed and this is really an exercise in
  129. 7:40using compression because once we closed
  130. 7:44those cords in either resonance hey we
  131. 7:50can add more compression if you haven't
  132. 7:52seen my video on compression be sure to
  133. 7:53watch it
  134. 7:53compression is essentially holding back
  135. 7:55air pushing more air from our primary
  136. 7:57support and using a different mechanism
  137. 7:59in our throat to hold back here hey
  138. 8:03which can lead to grit or it can just
  139. 8:06lead to a more defined and pure sound if
  140. 8:10we're balancing it right obviously no
  141. 8:13compression I'm letting tons of air
  142. 8:14through hey hey using a little bit of
  143. 8:18compression but enough to just make sure
  144. 8:20I have cord closure it's not like I'm
  145. 8:22backing up air now I'm backing up air
  146. 8:25and now I'm backing up Arius I am it's
  147. 8:30like the same thing to the higher
  148. 8:32resonance
  149. 8:41then doing that I'm using a little bit
  150. 8:44of compression no I'm because the courts
  151. 8:47are closed I can use even more
  152. 8:48compression and now it starts to sound
  153. 8:52pretty full but it's the same vocal
  154. 8:56positioning as falsetto I think that's
  155. 8:58where people get hung up and it's
  156. 9:00important to note that a well supported
  157. 9:02head voice using some compression is a
  158. 9:05form of mix if you get that down if
  159. 9:14you're able to support your head voice
  160. 9:17making the transition to a chesty mix
  161. 9:21like so many of us like to get is the
  162. 9:24next natural progression I've done lots
  163. 9:25of videos on on on mix and chesty mix so
  164. 9:28be sure to check those out so let's
  165. 9:30let's take the transition again you can
  166. 9:55really take it all the way there by
  167. 9:59understanding how to gradually add
  168. 10:02different aspects to the feel I think
  169. 10:08that by looking at each one of these
  170. 10:11things as different voices it hinders
  171. 10:15our ability to do what I just did which
  172. 10:18is go from what people call a falsetto
  173. 10:21all the way to a belted chesty mix I
  174. 10:25want to think of it as one voice as one
  175. 10:31thing but by adding different aspects
  176. 10:36and adjusting the feel little bits here
  177. 10:39and there I'm able to span the whole
  178. 10:42range without the trouble of separation
  179. 10:47so let's span that whole range of sound
  180. 10:49and feel again and try this yourself try
  181. 10:52to get close to some of these things and
  182. 10:54see if you
  183. 10:54do it
  184. 11:06Oh
  185. 11:13but still that's just a well supported
  186. 11:16using compression head voice I haven't
  187. 11:19done the chesty mix thing yet although
  188. 11:21like I said head voice is a form of a
  189. 11:24mix because you're starting to use more
  190. 11:25support
  191. 11:56and what ends up happening when you
  192. 12:00start to go higher and higher if you've
  193. 12:03got your support dialed in correctly if
  194. 12:06you're not worried about being in a
  195. 12:08particular resonance or thinking about
  196. 12:11your voice in a certain way and just
  197. 12:12kind of let things happen as you make
  198. 12:14that support transfer and that resonance
  199. 12:16transfer gradually as you go higher and
  200. 12:20higher your chest voice will then start
  201. 12:25kind of telling you oh that's that's
  202. 12:27that's really high and so there's this
  203. 12:29point where grit and mix and cool sounds
  204. 12:35other cool sounds start happening
  205. 12:37because you start to engage your break
  206. 12:40and your break is what lies between
  207. 12:44those two primary resonances chest head
  208. 12:48so by working through that full spectrum
  209. 12:51of sounds we let the voice do its thing
  210. 12:55naturally and we capitalize on what it's
  211. 12:58good at and then the awareness of our
  212. 12:59break becomes our good friend let's do
  213. 13:04it a couple more times and this time I'm
  214. 13:06gonna use the word or sound ya e ya ya
  215. 13:11ya ya ya and this is how you should
  216. 13:14practice and start discovering it
  217. 13:16whisper like that then Ya Ya Ya Ya Ya in
  218. 13:26your chest resonance and your primary
  219. 13:27resonance
  220. 13:28Ya Ya Ya Ya now throw it up so you feel
  221. 13:32it here
  222. 13:35hey don't worry about hitting a
  223. 13:38particular pitch yeah yeah yeah
  224. 13:40and it's okay if it's weak and raspy
  225. 13:43it's supposed to be at this point we're
  226. 13:44worse we're getting familiar with how
  227. 13:46every stage feels now let's add let's
  228. 13:54close our chords now let's aim for more
  229. 14:05support pushing from here a lot
  230. 14:17that's support that's compression that's
  231. 14:19closure and we're gonna keep going and
  232. 14:22add more compression until our vocal
  233. 14:25chords are holding back tons of air and
  234. 14:27as we keep pushing we're gonna start to
  235. 14:29feel the resonance want to transfer from
  236. 14:32here to here even though we're high
  237. 14:35that's going to engage our body's
  238. 14:38natural response to want to use the
  239. 14:40brake and then using that feel we're
  240. 14:44going to kind of sit in it and that's
  241. 14:45where our grit is gonna come from it's
  242. 14:48super cool
  243. 15:04[Applause]
  244. 15:06that's the transition it's ugly sounding
  245. 15:10at the moment but we can do some really
  246. 15:12cool things with it
  247. 15:36Hey
  248. 15:40Hey
  249. 15:47yeah
  250. 16:01part of truly developing your falsetto
  251. 16:04or your head voice is understanding how
  252. 16:07it feels to utilize it and blend it with
  253. 16:11your chest resonance that's what makes
  254. 16:14it that's what sells it that's what
  255. 16:16makes it really cool and usable I think
  256. 16:19a lot of people when they start going
  257. 16:20about developing their falsetto they're
  258. 16:22like okay now I'm thinking oh no I'm
  259. 16:25sitting in chest voice and they treated
  260. 16:27us two separate things
  261. 16:28don't do that make yet your goal to
  262. 16:31treat it as one thing and develop them
  263. 16:34together now I'm gonna throw on a track
  264. 16:37you heard a little bit of it in the
  265. 16:39beginning I'm gonna Muse over it like
  266. 16:41I've done many times before and I'm
  267. 16:42gonna I'm gonna blend things I'm gonna
  268. 16:45be in pure falsetto I'm gonna be in head
  269. 16:48voice it's gonna be a little bit of
  270. 16:50chest in there I'm gonna be very
  271. 16:52contemplative while I'm doing it I'm
  272. 16:54very careful and remember it doesn't
  273. 16:57really matter what it's called it
  274. 17:00matters how we use them all together and
  275. 17:02that helps each one of those
  276. 17:04classifications if we care to make them
  277. 17:06feel and sound stronger and more
  278. 17:10intentional let me know you think of
