  1. 0:00My name is Judit Bachum. Within 6
  2. 0:02months, I went from an A1/A2 level to a
  3. 0:06near-native level in my target language
  4. 0:09. Without any language course, while I
  5. 0:13was working full-time on my Master's in
  6. 0:16language acquisition, teaching German
  7. 0:19as a foreign language on the side, and
  8. 0:22going to the gym four to five times a
  9. 0:25week to box. I managed to do it all at
  10. 0:28the same time. Many people ask me, "
  11. 0:31Judit, how did you manage to do all of
  12. 0:33that at once?" And my honest answer to
  13. 0:37that is, I simply didn't work any
  14. 0:39harder than you. I didn't work more
  15. 0:41than you. But what I did differently is
  16. 0:46that I developed my own system, and in
  17. 0:49this video, I want to give you 12 tips
  18. 0:52that you can use today to reach your
  19. 0:55goal very quickly and to speak German
  20. 0:58more fluently and freely. Just follow
  21. 1:02these steps and you will improve very
  22. 1:04quickly. We'll start right away with
  23. 1:06the first tip. Tip number 1: Sleep
  24. 1:10should not be a reward, but rather
  25. 1:12sleep is your tool. Sleep is your tool
  26. 1:16to speak your target language more
  27. 1:19fluently and faster. That means if you
  28. 1:23don't sleep often enough, if for
  29. 1:25example you only sleep 5 or 6 hours a
  30. 1:28day, you will quickly notice that you
  31. 1:31can't perform as well the next day. And
  32. 1:34you can't perform as well in your job.
  33. 1:37And also when you speak German—I mean
  34. 1:39, when you are tired, when you've
  35. 1:41hardly slept, you can't perform, you
  36. 1:43can't speak well, of course. And that
  37. 1:46is my point number one. It is very
  38. 1:48important that you optimize your sleep
  39. 1:50quality. Yes, they recommend between 7
  40. 1:53to 9 hours of sleep per day. Why?
  41. 1:57Because research says so, and because
  42. 1:59you can make better decisions then. For
  43. 2:02example, if you are overtired, you are
  44. 2:05overtired, then you will make bad
  45. 2:07decisions. You will probably tend to
  46. 2:10lean towards fast food, towards a cake,
  47. 2:13a piece of cake, instead of eating
  48. 2:15healthily. And it's exactly the same
  49. 2:17with language learning. Instead of
  50. 2:20making an effort and trying to speak a
  51. 2:22little, you'd rather listen passively.
  52. 2:25And that doesn't work. If you only
  53. 2:27listen passively at the end of the day,
  54. 2:29you won't speak any better. We need to
  55. 2:32improve output, and in order for you to
  56. 2:35improve your output, you need to be
  57. 2:37well-rested. So please, set your alarm,
  58. 2:41really set it—it is very important.
  59. 2:43Sleep quality. Also important. I'll
  60. 2:46give you one tip for that. I always set
  61. 2:49a timer, an alarm, not to wake up, but
  62. 2:52to go to bed. That means I have an
  63. 2:54alarm in the evening. So, that's
  64. 2:57between 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., that
  65. 2:59I finally have to go to sleep. And I
  66. 3:03try to get up without an alarm, just
  67. 3:06with the light. That means I never put
  68. 3:10my blinds down, everything is always
  69. 3:13open, and I naturally wake up with the
  70. 3:15sunlight. And so I'm completely
  71. 3:19refreshed and can start my routine
  72. 3:21right away and jump into my first task
  73. 3:24to warm up. Here's my speaking. What
  74. 3:28you can do afterward, point number 2,
  75. 3:31is simply to listen to a playlist first
  76. 3:33, so listen to German or your target
  77. 3:36language. That means I already created
  78. 3:41a playlist on the weekend with episodes
  79. 3:44or videos that I like, where I think, "
  80. 3:47Wow, I like this video and I want to
  81. 3:50speak like this person." That means
  82. 3:54I’ve already prepared a playlist in
  83. 3:56advance, and when I get up, it’s like
  84. 3:58my alarm; I just listen to this
  85. 4:00playlist and I don't just listen
  86. 4:01passively, I try to repeat. So I do a
  87. 4:04bit of shadowing by myself. Exactly. So
  88. 4:08I just repeat a few sentences. I have
  89. 4:10to—well, it’s really no effort. It
  90. 4:12doesn't have to be fast, it doesn't
  91. 4:14necessarily have to be perfect. It's
  92. 4:16just to activate these mouth muscles
  93. 4:19here to begin with. And I do that for
  94. 4:2310 minutes max, while I'm maybe, I
  95. 4:25don't know, putting on makeup or
  96. 4:27getting ready. I do that, and it helps
  97. 4:31you get your brain tuned into German or
  98. 4:34the language you are currently learning
  99. 4:37, and that way you can start your day
  100. 4:40fresh and already speak a little better
  101. 4:43than usual. What I do after that, I am
  102. 4:47self-employed, which means I work
  103. 4:49primarily from home. But what you can
  104. 4:52do, if you work in an office, is either
  105. 4:53at home or in the office. I have a desk
  106. 4:57, and my desk is very, very, very
  107. 4:59important. I moved recently and I
  108. 5:02didn't have a desk before and had to
  109. 5:04wait a week, and now I'm just so
  110. 5:07relieved that I got this desk from
  111. 5:09FlexiSpot. Many thanks for the
  112. 5:11collaboration. FlexiSpot kindly asked
  113. 5:14if I might simply introduce the product
  114. 5:18. Thank you so much. This is a great
  115. 5:20desk that I've had for two weeks now,
  116. 5:23and I have to say, it has really,
  117. 5:25really, really changed my life, because
  118. 5:28I'm working all the time and I can't
  119. 5:30just sit all day long. I am a person
  120. 5:33who is very athletic, and I know that
  121. 5:35in order to perform at my best, I also
  122. 5:37have to move. That's the great thing
  123. 5:40about this desk, that it's
  124. 5:41height-adjustable. That means, um, I
  125. 5:45can sit, and then, uh, adjust it higher
  126. 5:48, like, for example, here. So I can
  127. 5:52adjust it higher, uh, or lower it. Um,
  128. 5:55and, uh, exactly, lower it or make it
  129. 5:58higher. And it's just so practical,
  130. 6:00especially when you work from home, and
  131. 6:02yes, the great thing is also that I
  132. 6:04have a walking pad. And that is part of
  133. 6:08my morning routine. Whenever I'm on the
  134. 6:11phone or whenever I'm doing things that
  135. 6:13I can do on my cell phone, I walk, uh,
  136. 6:15and so you can see it now. Exactly, I
  137. 6:18walk and type, and so I can always be
  138. 6:21in motion, because movement is
  139. 6:22extremely important for up here, in
  140. 6:25order to perform over there. You have
  141. 6:27to train regularly, and I train outside
  142. 6:29of the house four to five times per
  143. 6:31week. I mainly do HIIT workouts and
  144. 6:35calisthenics, and also boxing. So, that
  145. 6:39is, m-mostly HIIT sport. I used to
  146. 6:42always do fitness, but I have to say
  147. 6:44that I couldn't perform as well the
  148. 6:46next day. So, if I. For example,
  149. 6:48trained legs, then the next day I
  150. 6:49couldn't perform well anymore. And I
  151. 6:51think, I am of the opinion, that one
  152. 6:53should do sports in order to feel
  153. 6:55fitter, to feel better. And for me,
  154. 6:58HIIT workouts work best, so that's
  155. 6:59cardio, that's a lot of cardio, a
  156. 7:01little bit of weightlifting too, that's
  157. 7:03a good mix, that mix, I would, I would
  158. 7:05definitely recommend that to you. Um,
  159. 7:09and exactly, thanks to the desk, I can
  160. 7:11therefore regularly collect my steps.
  161. 7:14Um, it is definitely recommended to
  162. 7:16take 10,000 steps per day, and I manage
  163. 7:19that with ease with this desk. It is
  164. 7:22simply of a very high quality. It was a
  165. 7:25bit difficult with the assembly, I have
  166. 7:27to say honestly. But if you have a
  167. 7:29partner who can help you with that,
  168. 7:31that is better. Um, but otherwise the
  169. 7:34team, well the team was also super,
  170. 7:36very nice, and I didn't have any
  171. 7:38problems. They were always very
  172. 7:40reachable. They also reached out as
  173. 7:42soon as I received my desk, to make
  174. 7:44sure that everything went well. Um,
  175. 7:47exactly. A bit annoying on the side was
  176. 7:49just that I, um, received the product
  177. 7:51in several packages. So, that means you
  178. 7:53had to wait a bit. I mean, I didn't get
  179. 7:56everything at once and I really needed
  180. 7:58a desk, so, yeah, um, yeah, the whole
  181. 8:00thing took about a week, but now I have
  182. 8:02my desk and I can really recommend it
  183. 8:04to you. So, you can now order the
  184. 8:08FlexiSpot desk using my link in the
  185. 8:10video description. Um, and yes, it's
  186. 8:14highly recommended, I would definitely
  187. 8:16do it again and I am very grateful for
  188. 8:18this collaboration. Thank you so much.
  189. 8:19As I told you, movement is very
  190. 8:22important and should be your top
  191. 8:24priority to improve yourself. Movement
  192. 8:27is important, but you also have to
  193. 8:29schedule movement. For me, it's part of
  194. 8:31my set routine. I know, and it's—it
  195. 8:34really is never an exception. I have it
  196. 8:36firmly scheduled in my calendar. I
  197. 8:38exercise at this time every morning, at
  198. 8:40, uh, uh, uh, uh, between, uh, and, uh,
  199. 8:43for example between 8 and 9 a.m. I've
  200. 8:45already planned it. If you don't plan
  201. 8:48it, you won't do it. And it's exactly
  202. 8:50the same when learning foreign
  203. 8:51languages. If you don't plan on the
  204. 8:54weekend when you're going to do what,
  205. 8:56you won't do it, you won't do it. So
  206. 9:00think about it on the weekend, consider
  207. 9:02what you want to do next week. Exactly,
  208. 9:04I only have 30 minutes of time. What
  209. 9:06exactly? So, do you want to speak? Do
  210. 9:08you want to listen? Do you want to
  211. 9:10write? What exactly are you doing and
  212. 9:12when? Write it down now. If you don't
  213. 9:14do it right now, you won't do it. Write
  214. 9:17in the comments now, when are you going
  215. 9:19to train? I am very excited to see your
  216. 9:21comments, and if you would like to
  217. 9:23participate in a challenge, there is
  218. 9:24this five-day output challenge. Uh,
  219. 9:27there's a link in the video description
  220. 9:28. You can just sign up, and then every
  221. 9:30day you'll get a task from me via email
  222. 9:32, and that way you can talk about your
  223. 9:34favorite topic at the end of the week.
  224. 9:37Um, yeah, so of course you have to
  225. 9:39schedule movement, but also your
  226. 9:41speaking practice. One more tip: the
  227. 9:44cell phone does not sleep in your
  228. 9:46bedroom. Yeah, and I used to think,
  229. 9:49yeah, I don't get it, no, that's
  230. 9:50nonsense, it doesn't help. So, I
  231. 9:52thought that only people who are into
  232. 9:55the esoterics scene believe that. Um,
  233. 9:58it is actually the case that um I sleep
  234. 10:00better when my phone is not in the
  235. 10:02living room—in the bedroom. So, my
  236. 10:05phone stays in the living room and I
  237. 10:06get up with an alarm clock, and you'll
  238. 10:08say, "Yeah, but you work from home,
  239. 10:10it's all very relaxed for you." Uh, I
  240. 10:13always have appointments, uh I have a
  241. 10:16lot to do, and I always have, yes, set
  242. 10:18times when I have to get things done.
  243. 10:21That's why I still have to get up early
  244. 10:23, and I usually get up between—it
  245. 10:26depends—5: 30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Uh,
  246. 10:28it naturally depends on what I want to
  247. 10:31get done that day, but quite naturally,
  248. 10:33and you can manage this too, by not
  249. 10:35having your phone in your bedroom. A
  250. 10:40study confirms this, too; uh, Finnish
  251. 10:42researchers followed 75 people,
  252. 10:44measured phone usage via an app, and
  253. 10:46also measured sleep. What is the result
  254. 10:50? And I'll show you this study now.
  255. 10:53Phone use in bed measurably worsened
  256. 10:56things. Um, how long it takes to fall
  257. 11:00asleep and how long you lie awake at
  258. 11:03night. So, phone use outside of bed did
  259. 11:06not have this effect. That means if you
  260. 11:09are using your phone in bed right now,
  261. 11:11you shouldn't be doing that. I don't
  262. 11:12know what you're doing right now. Yes,
  263. 11:14another tip: use AI. If you want to be
  264. 11:17a top performer in the age of AI and
  265. 11:19don't know how to handle AI or how to
  266. 11:22use AI, I don't know what you're doing
  267. 11:24right now. So, you should also, um, yes
  268. 11:28, with AI you can trick—you can
  269. 11:30improve your sleep quality. With AI,
  270. 11:33you can write emails faster and so on
  271. 11:35and so forth. So, if you aren't doing
  272. 11:38that now, I would take the time at this
  273. 11:41point, invest a little time in how you
  274. 11:43can optimize your life with AI. There
  275. 11:46are opportunities in very different
  276. 11:49areas. So, you should do that too. One
  277. 11:55more tip, sleep topic is still
  278. 11:56important. Um, as soon as I open my
  279. 12:02eyes, I get up, I get up immediately,
  280. 12:04no excuses. And do you know how I
  281. 12:07manage that? I immediately call up this
  282. 12:09vision of myself. I always have a
  283. 12:10vision of myself, Judith. She is a
  284. 12:12speech coach. She is the best speech
  285. 12:14coach in the German-speaking world. She
  286. 12:17wants to help people speak better, more
  287. 12:19fluently, and above all, speak more
  288. 12:22confidently. And then I think to myself
  289. 12:24, hey, I can't stay in bed. I have to
  290. 12:26fulfill my mission, I have to do this.
  291. 12:29And I get up, I smile, start right away
  292. 12:32with my playlist, do a bit of shadowing
  293. 12:34, get into the conversation, get into
  294. 12:36the conversation with myself and then
  295. 12:38start my day. That's how it works best,
  296. 12:41at least for me. Also important, in
  297. 12:44order to speak better, is to schedule
  298. 12:48your meetings for the afternoon. So
  299. 12:51don't have meetings in the morning, the
  300. 12:54morning should be your time, your your
  301. 12:58your moment where you can really dive
  302. 13:01into a topic. So, if you are learning
  303. 13:05German, for example, then the morning
  304. 13:07should really be your priority to
  305. 13:09practice and train your German above
  306. 13:11all else. I really notice that with
  307. 13:15every hour that passes, my cognitive
  308. 13:18ability gets worse. That means if you
  309. 13:21only start learning German at the end
  310. 13:23of the day, you won't speak as well as
  311. 13:25you would right after getting up, when
  312. 13:27you're ready to take things in and get
  313. 13:29something done. So, now the topic of
  314. 13:33health. That is my last tip for today.
  315. 13:35Eat things that don't make you tired.
  316. 13:38Do you want to speak better? Imagine
  317. 13:42you ate a lot at lunch one day and you
  318. 13:45hit a low afterward. That is the slump
  319. 13:49in the afternoon, so naturally you
  320. 13:51can't speak as well then. So eat
  321. 13:54protein and vegetables first and don't
  322. 13:57eat fast carbohydrates on their own. I
  323. 14:00am not a health expert. Um, but it is
  324. 14:04still what I have observed for myself.
  325. 14:07Protein and vegetables always work, but
  326. 14:09if I prepare a dish for myself with
  327. 14:11pasta and sauce, cheese sauce for
  328. 14:13example, I know that I will literally
  329. 14:15fall asleep two minutes later. Um, so
  330. 14:19better to go for something healthy like
  331. 14:21vegetables, fish, or something high in
  332. 14:23protein. Yes, that's um quite good and
  333. 14:27a tip for you is to prepare a dish that
  334. 14:30you can also eat for dinner. This way
  335. 14:33you can save a little time. I always
  336. 14:35cook large portions so that I don't
  337. 14:38have to cook again in the evening.
  338. 14:41That's also a good option because it
  339. 14:44keeps me from having to decide what to
  340. 14:46eat later on. And when I'm tired, I
  341. 14:49tend to go for something unhealthy. And
  342. 14:52that's why it's good if you already
  343. 14:54know, plan in the morning what you are
  344. 14:56going to eat, and um then you can make
  345. 14:59a good decision and eat healthy food.
  346. 15:02So, that was it for this video. I hope
  347. 15:04you were able to take something away
  348. 15:06from this video and that you learned a
  349. 15:08few things. And if it’s the case that
  350. 15:10you actually learned a lot in this
  351. 15:12video, then please leave me a comment.
  352. 15:15Which point resonated with you the most
  353. 15:17? What was the one point where you said
  354. 15:20, wow, that really resonates with me?
  355. 15:22That is exactly what I wanted or needed
  356. 15:25to hear today. Uh, that was really,
  357. 15:29tell me, reveal to me, what was that
  358. 15:30golden nugget where you say, wow, that
  359. 15:32did something for me. I would be very
  360. 15:35happy to hear what you were able to
  361. 15:37take away from this video. And at this
